They came into free agency with big plans. The Giants were willing to spend a lucrative amount of money to land a superstar or two. There was a moment where fans thought San Francisco landed Aaron Judge before it <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/yankees-news-premature-aaron-judge-giants-free-agency-update-sends-twitter-into-meltdown" rel="noopener">was deemed a false report</a>. After losing out on Judge, the Giants agreed to terms on a deal with Carlos Correa. However, that deal fell apart after the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mets-news-carlos-correa-locks-in-12-year-315-million-deal-with-new-york" rel="noopener">Giants backed out</a> due to injury.</p><p>Nevertheless, San Francisco still made a number of moves in free agency. But did they do enough to compete in the National League? Without further ado, let’s grade the Giants’ free agency moves.</p><h2><b>Giants land a pair of outfielders</b></h2><p>The Giants signed both OF Mitch Haniger and OF Michael Conforto <a href="https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/free-agents/san-francisco-giants/" rel="noopener">this offseason</a>, per Spotrac. Both players are former stars who took steps in the wrong direction last year. In fact, Conforto did not even play in 2022 after failing to sign in free agency and ultimately being diagnosed with an injury.</p><p>Haniger and Conforto are both proven players that will provide a boost to San Francisco’s lineup. Neither of them are superstars that will lead the Giants to a World Series, but Haniger did blast 39 home runs during the 2021 campaign.</p><p>In addition to Haniger and Conforto, the Giants retained OF Joc Pederson after offering him a qualifying offer. Pederson offers pop from the left-side of the plate and is fresh off of a strong 2022 season.</p><p>The Giants’ outfield offense could impress in 2023.</p><h2><b>Questionable starting pitching signings</b></h2><p>The Giants have been able to add veteran pitchers and turn their careers around in the past. Kevin Gausman emerged as a star with the team and others have found their footing in San Francisco as well. The Giants are hoping for similar results with Ross Striping and Sean Manaea</p><p>Stripling quietly enjoyed a strong season in Toronto with the Blue Jays last year. He posted a 3.01 ERA in 32 games pitched. However, he recorded a 4.80 ERA in 2021. It will be interesting to see what version of Stripling the Giants end up getting.</p><p>Sean Manaea was previously regarded as a solid big league pitcher. However, his production fell off a cliff in 2022. The left-hander had an ERA just south of 5 during his tenure in San Diego with the Padres. But Manaea has produced questionable results for quite some time now. In 2021, his ERA was just under 4, while he posted a 4.50 ERA in 2020.</p><p>These moves could pan out in the long run, but there isn’t much to be excited about here. Perhaps Stripling can carry over his quality 2022 results.</p><h2><b>Taylor Rogers</b></h2><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/taylor-rogers-joins-twin-brother-tyler-in-giants-with-33-million-contract" rel="noopener">Taylor Rogers is set</a> to join his twin Tyler in San Francisco after inking a deal with the Giants.</p><p>The Giants feature a formidable bullpen. Taylor Rogers endured a down season in 2022, but had previously been regarded as one of the better relievers in the game. San Francisco is hopeful he can bounce back this year. This is a solid signing that adds bullpen depth to the team.</p><h2><b>Giants’ departures</b></h2><p>The Giants watched <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/yankees-news-carlos-rodon-agrees-to-six-year-162-million-deal-with-new-york" rel="noopener">Carlos Rodon sign</a> with the New York Yankees in free agency. Additionally, pitchers Shelby Miller and Jarlin Garcia signed elsewhere this offseason.</p><p>The Rodon departure certainly stands out. He’s emerged as one of the best pitchers in the game in recent years.</p><h2><b>Final grade</b></h2><p>The Giants’ grade would have been much higher had they been able to land a star in free agency. Rogers, the twin brother of San Francisco <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/giants-news-san-franciscos-180-on-carlos-correa-gets-another-stunning-twist" rel="noopener">Giants</a> relief pitcher <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/padres-news-twin-brothers-taylor-and-tyler-rodgers-clash-for-first-time-in-giants-san-diego-game" rel="noopener">Tyler Rogers</a>, <a href="https://twitter.com/Ken_Rosenthal/status/1606312947256594434" rel="noopener">is in agreement</a> on a three-year, $33 million contract with the club, sources told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. The Rogers twins, who are identical, are set to form one of the more confusing bullpen tandems in recent memory.</p><p>The deal is pending a physical. Taylor Rogers, a southpaw, spent the first six seasons of his career with the Minnesota Twins before he was traded to the San Diego Padres before the start of the season.</p><p>Rogers struggled a bit but was a popular trade target at the deadline, and sure enough, he was dealt to the Milwaukee Brewers in the Josh Hader deal.</p><p>The left-hander didn’t enjoy as much success as he did in Minnesota, as he recorded a 4.76 ERA this past season.</p><p>But his track record- a career 3.42 ERA with 81 saves and a 28.3 percent strikeout rate- suggest that the Giants are getting a very capable arm for their bullpen.</p><p>Not only that, but the Giants are also giving every baseball fan even more reason to tune into their games next year.</p><p>Taylor and Tyler Rogers will become just the fourth set of <a href="https://twitter.com/SlangsOnSports/status/1606318859731992577" rel="noopener">twin brothers to be teammates</a>, joining the likes of Jose and Ozzie Canseco, Eddie and Johnny O’Brien and Joe and Red Shannon, per Sarah Langs on Twitter.</p><p>Giants fans will now have to attempt to tell the two apart when they’re sitting next to each other in the bullpen.</p><p>Fortunately, Taylor Rogers, who is left-handed, will be easy to differentiate from Tyler Rogers’ right-handed, instantly recognizable submarine delivery on the mound.</p><p>Giants fans will be treated to plenty of <a href="https://twitter.com/MLBONFOX/status/1606318466612576258" rel="noopener">moments</a>– and hopefully outs- from the Rogers twins.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Also involved in <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/padres-news-san-diego-nabs-taylor-rogers-trades-chris-paddack-in-deal-with-twins/">the deal</a> is Padres relief pitcher Emilio Pagan. For the Twins, the addition of Paddack beefs up a rotation that the club clearly emphasized on improving this offseason, with Pagan providing bullpen depth. Meanwhile, San Diego adds a much-needed arm to their bullpen in Rogers and outfielder depth in Rooker. It’s a trade that seems to work for both sides. That said, it’s time to grade the Padres-Twins trade involving Paddack and Rogers.</p><p><b>Padres: A-</b></p><p>The Padres were entering the season without a clear plan of attack for the ninth inning. Veteran reliever Robert Suarez was looking like the favorite to close for the Padres this year, though the possibility of former starting pitcher Dinelson Lamet working the ninth was also floated. Clearly, neither option excited the Padres’ brass very much. However, Rogers, who has 50 career saves and broke out for 30 in a single season as recently as 2019, brings a far more proven ninth-inning option. The southpaw has pitched to an ERA below 3.50 in three of the last four seasons while striking out an average of 11.5 per nine innings, thanks to a nasty slider. It was time for the team to move on from Paddack, is coming off of back-to-back poor seasons. That the Padres were able to turn Paddack and a depth reliever in Pagan into a solid closer and a much-needed outfielder in Rooker, is impressive work by general manager A.J. Preller. Rooker, 27, clubbed 74 homers in 321 minor league games and is likely to platoon in right field with Jurickson Profar. All in all, the Padres earn an A- for addressing two positions of need in the trade. With Paddack departing, perhaps the club has their sights set on a midseason call-up for top pitching prospect Mackenzie Gore?</p><p><b>Twins: B+</b></p><p>The Twins have made it clear that improving the pitching rotation is their priority. By acquiring Paddack, their second trade involving a starting pitcher, Minnesota has potentially solidified their rotation even more. There’s no doubt that the 26-year-old is a bit of a risk, as he’s coming off of back-to-back seasons with an ERA above 4.50, as he has failed to rediscover the strong form he displayed as a rookie. However, Paddack, who is owed $2.25 million, is under team control for the next three seasons. With Sonny Gray, rising prospect Joe Ryan, talented youngster Bailey Ober and Dylan Bundy, Paddack cements what could be a promising rotation if things shake out right for the Twins. It hurts to deal Rogers, who was the only proven option remaining in the bullpen. However, the Twins are likely confident that Jorge Alcala, who has posted strikeout rates above 26 percent in each of the last two seasons, is ready for the responsibility of the ninth inning. In dealing Rooker, Minnesota also <a href="https://www.twincities.com/2022/03/24/wrist-now-healthy-twins-alex-kirilloff-ready-to-produce/">ensured more regular playing time for talented outfielder/first baseman Alex Kirilloff</a>, who often found himself in a playing time crunch in 2021. The bullpen will certainly be an adventure, though the Twins undoubtedly made themselves better with this deal.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

They linked up with the Minnesota Twins to bolster their bullpen.</p><p>According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, San Diego will receive Taylor Rodgers and Brent Rooker while sending Chris Paddack and Emilio Pagan to Minnesota. Rogers, a 31-year-old left-hander, was a 2021 All-Star and recorded an ERA of 3.35 and a career-best 13.2 strikeouts per nine innings across 40.1 innings last season. San Diego was in need of a lefty in their bullpen.</p><p>Rooker played just 58 games last season He got hit by a pitch as many times as he hit a home run, accomplishing each feat nine times while posting a .688 OPS. The Padres need outfield help, so the 27-year-old could be a useful piece.</p><p>The Twins looking into Paddack was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/twins-rumor-minnesota-nearing-blockbuster-trade-for-padres-chris-paddack/">previously reported</a> and now it is a done deal. The was included in talks that would have sent him <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mets-news-new-yorks-full-offer-from-padres-involving-chris-paddack-revealed/">to the New York Mets</a> along with Eric Hosmer. Now, he heads to a Minnesota team that is looking to add to its starting pitching rotation. The 26-year-old, right-handed Paddack posted an ERA of 5.07 and a FIP of 3.78 last season.</p><p>Minnesota has been interested in Paddack for a while, per Dan Hayes of The Athletic, and now add him and a reliever to the roster.
