He has covered athletics at the University of Michigan and is now serving as an Associate Editor, Chicago Bulls beat writer, and Michigan football reporter at ClutchPoints.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Los Angeles Angels</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Not too long ago, Tim Anderson was one of the best shortstops in baseball, and the Chicago White Sox were viewed as World Series contenders with him on the team. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/chicago-white-sox/3-early-chicago-white-sox-trade-targets-ahead-of-2025-deadline">Anderson ended up leaving Chicago</a> in 2023 after he and the team took a big step in the wrong direction, and the White Sox are now one of the worst teams in baseball. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/chicago-white-sox/white-sox-news-tim-anderson-return-chicago-angels">Anderson is now with the</a> Los Angeles Angels, and his struggles have continued. In fact, he is <a href="https://x.com/Alden_Gonzalez/status/1927835801582248424" rel="noopener">being sent down</a> to the minors.</p><p>“The Angels have designated Tim Anderson for assignment,” Alden González said in a post.</p><p>This season has not been kind to Tim Anderson as he was hitting just .205 before getting sent down. He had a .499 OPS, zero home runs and just three RBIs on the season. He has been struggling badly.</p><p>In 2019, Anderson had one of the best bats in baseball. He had a breakout season as he finished the year hitting .335 with an OPS of .865. He also hit 18 home runs that season. That was the start of a great four-year stretch for Anderson as he hit over .300 in every season through 2022. He also hit 51 homers during that stretch. The last three years have been very different.</p><p>Since hitting .301 in 2022, Anderson hasn’t been over .245, and he has gotten worse each year. In the last three seasons, he has hit just one home run. His OPS hasn’t been higher than .582. Anderson was one of the best players in the game, but things have gone downhill quickly.</p><p>Who knows what the issue has been with Tim Anderson, but this move by Angels is one that has been expected. Anderson isn’t close to playing at the level that he was at a few years ago, and he has been trending in the wrong direction.</p><p>Maybe a trip to the minor leagues will help Tim Anderson build his confidence back up and he can come back with some resemblance to his old self. This past offseason, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/angels-news-angels-trying-resurrect-2-time-all-stars-career">Anderson signed with the Los Angeles Angels</a>. The Angels are currently in Chicago to play the White Sox during Opening Weekend, and Anderson <a href="https://www.chicagotribune.com/2025/03/28/achicago-white-sox-tim-anderson-return/" rel="noopener">recently commented</a> on his time with his former ball club, via LaMond Pope of The Chicago Tribune.</p><p>“(Chicago is) always going to be a huge part of me,” Anderson said. “This is where it all started. That chapter is just all love. There’s a lot of love for me. I enjoyed my time here for sure.”</p><p>The White Sox ended up defeating the Angels by a final score of 8-1 in Anderson’s return. Anderson, a two-time All-Star, has struggled in recent seasons. He is hoping to get back on track in Anaheim with the Halos.</p><h2><b>Tim Anderson was a star with White Sox</b></h2><p>Anderson earned back-to-back All-Star selections in 2021 and 2022 with Chicago. From 2019-2022, he recorded at least a .301 batting average in each season. In 2019, led the American League with a .335 batting average.</p><p>In 2023, though, Anderson hit just .245. Things got even worse in Miami, as Anderson hit .214 with a .463 OPS. The former All-Star’s past two seasons have been forgettable, but the Angels believe he can turn things around. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-angels/angels-ex-batting-champ-gets-brutally-honest-on-career-hitting-rock-bottom-out-of-nowhere">Anderson is hoping to find his footing</a> with his new ball club.</p><p>Meanwhile, the White Sox have also endured a few miserable seasons in recent memory. Their 41-121 2024 record was historically bad. The team’s outlook does not look especially promising in 2025, either.</p><p>Chicago is rebuilding the team in hopes of competing sooner rather than later. After his departure the Angels went from a 73-win team to a 63-win team. Determined to come out swinging in 2025, the Angels signed former Chicago White Sox All-Star shortstop <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/angels-news-angels-trying-resurrect-2-time-all-stars-career">Tim Anderson to a minor league deal</a>.</p><p>As Anderson attempts to revive his career and reputation in LA, he sat down with AJ Pierzynski for a chat. And the former White Sox catcher noted that, in addition to playing for the same organization, the two are also members of a “<a href="https://x.com/FoulTerritoryTV/status/1884682592399589491" rel="noopener">particular club</a>,” as both Pierzynski and Anderson were punched in the face on national television, per Foul Territory on X.</p><p>Cubs’ catcher <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e72grbfCVko" rel="noopener">Michael Barrett initiated</a> Pierzynski into the punched-in-the-face club back in 2006 after a collision at home plate. In 2023, it was Anderson’s turn.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/guardians-news-jose-ramirez-knocks-down-tim-anderson-in-shocking-fight-that-sparks-madness-on-the-field">Anderson mixed it up</a> with Cleveland Guardians’ third baseman Jose Ramirez, which he quickly discovered was a huge mistake. The brawl began after Ramirez slid head first into second base where Anderson was covering and the two exchanged words.</p><p>The verbal sparring escalated to a physical confrontation as both players squared up and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7oacyt6Jk8U" rel="noopener">started throwing punches</a>. Anderson approached the fight like an AB and took a couple swings and misses before Ramirez landed an awkward but perfectly placed blow to the chin that dropped the shortstop like a sack of potatoes.</p><h2><b>Tim Anderson hopes to get back on track with the Angels</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Anderson-and-Ramirez.jpg"><figcaption>Ken Blaze-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>When Pierzynski brought the brawl up during the interview, Anderson appeared visibly uncomfortable. But to his credit, he opened up about the incident, which led to a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/white-sox-news-tim-anderson-suspension-guardians-jose-ramirez-brawl">five-game suspension</a> in August 2023.</p><p>Pierzynski broached the topic by saying that he’s “signed a million pictures of me getting punched and people still bring it to me all the time and I laugh about it and whatever… I laughed about it and moved on,” Pierzynski insisted. “I never really heard you talk about it. Did it affect you in any way?” he asked Anderson, via Foul Territory.</p><p>“I wouldn’t say I’d go as far as signing pictures. But I was going through sh*t before that moment. That was probably [what] created the energy and vibes to be able to tap into that energy,” Anderson acknowledged.</p><p>“I can’t really change what happened. But I understood a lot of things in that moment throughout that situation. I understand what love was. I understand who really is your teammate, who really got your back, who’s really in your corner. So I could say I understand those in that moment, for sure,” Anderson concluded.</p><p>Despite winning a batting title and being selected to two All-Star Games, Anderson has endured a brutal decline. After the White Sox bought him out of his contract, he <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/marlins-news-miami-tim-anderson-contract-free-agency">signed a one-year, $5 million deal</a> with the Miami Marlins for the 2024 season. But he failed to return to form in Miami and the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/marlins-news-make-surprising-tim-anderson-decision">Marlins released Anderson</a> in July.</p><p>Anderson has produced -3.5 bWAR over the last two seasons. Now he’s hoping to get his career back on track with the Angels. The team is <a href="https://x.com/CraigMish/status/1808160172042232195" rel="noopener">designating shortstop Tim Anderson</a> for assignment, per the Miami Herald.</p><p>The shortstop was having a rough season in Miami. He had only two hits in his last seven games for the team. On the year, Anderson is batting .214 for the club. He had an error in what turned out to be his final game with the Marlins on June 30, against the Philadelphia Phillies. That performance was a microcosm of the veteran’s struggles in South Florida.</p><h2>Tim Anderson’s time in South Florida</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Tim-Anderson-makes-a-play-for-the-Marlins.jpg"><figcaption>© Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>It is a definite surprise to see Anderson go so soon, despite his recent problems. He <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/marlins-news-miami-tim-anderson-contract-free-agency">joined the team</a> before the 2024 season, after playing in Chicago with the White Sox for several years. Anderson was a powerhouse at the plate in Chicago. He finished as the American League batting champion during the 2019 season. He also won a Silver Slugger Award in the Windy City, and he was twice named to the American League All-Star team.</p><p>Things <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/what-perfect-marlins-trade-deadline-looks-like">completely unraveled</a> for the shortstop in Miami. He didn’t hit a single home run all year, and had only nine runs batted in through three months of play. His final appearance for the team sums up his experience in South Florida, as he went 0-for-5 in a game on June 30th against the Phillies.</p><p>In his career, Anderson has shown himself to be a strong offensive player. He went four consecutive seasons batting above .300, including that special 2019 campaign. He has played in the MLB since 2016. He spent his entire career with the White Sox before the 2024 campaign.</p><p>Now Anderson will be searching for a new home once again. The White Sox are enduring one of the worst seasons in franchise history, and would probably welcome Anderson back. In Chicago, he batted .282 with 98 homers, 338 RBIs and 117 stolen bases. He also appeared in a total of 895 games. The veteran shortstop signed a one-year contract with Miami before this season. He will now likely need to navigate his way through Triple-A baseball for awhile to improve his stock.</p><p>There are opportunities out there for Anderson though. Several MLB teams are likely to give him a chance, due to the offensive production he was giving just a few years ago. The Seattle Mariners are one team in particular looking for an every day bat that Anderson could provide, in the DH position.</p><p>With Anderson out of the lineup, the Marlins are expected to use Xavier Edwards in the shortstop slot. Vidal Brujan can also get some work at that position. The Marlins are looking for any option on both offense and defense from that part of the infield.</p><p>Miami is expected to be <a href="https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/marlins-designate-tim-anderson-for-assignment-after-all-star-shortstop-failed-to-rebound/" rel="noopener">selling off</a> some other players before the July 30 trade deadline, per CBS Sports. The Marlins are 30-54 and one of the worst National League teams this season in the standings. The Marlins are dead last in the NL East, and 25 games behind the Phillies in that division.</p><p>Miami’s next game is on Tuesday against the Boston Red Sox. So why is this Marlins-Guardians game notable anyway? Well, it isn’t because it’s a rematch of the 1997 World Series (although some fans may tune in purely for that reason). Hopefully Anderson is doing alright as he was placed on the bereavement list, so it is no joking matter.</p><p>Last year’s incident led to fans trolling Anderson. Fans were interested to see if there would be any leftover tension from the 2023 incident between the two players. Unless Anderson returns before June 9, though, we will not see a Ramirez-Anderson showdown anytime soon. This three-game weekend series is the last time the two teams will go head-to-head in 2024.</p><p>The Marlins are struggling and are rumored to be <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-rumors-yankees-brewers-trade-deadline-marlins-jesus-luzardo">open to trading players</a> before the deadline in July. There is a chance that Anderson could be traded to a team the Guardians will play at some point in 2024.</p><h2><b>Tim Anderson’s difficult past few seasons</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Tim-Anderson-prepares-to-fight-Jose-Ramirez.jpg"><figcaption>Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Anderson spent his entire career with the White Sox before <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/marlins-news-miami-tim-anderson-contract-free-agency">signing with the Marlins</a> in free agency this past offseason. He made two All-Star teams in Chicago and established himself as one of the better shortstops in the league. Anderson was even emerging as one of the most popular players in the game.</p><p>In 2023, though, Anderson struggled mightily. He consistently hit over .300 from 2019-2022, even winning the American League batting title during the ’19 campaign. In 2023, however, he hit just .245 across 123 games. He also only hit one home run all season long.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/guardians-news-jose-ramirez-explains-why-he-swung-at-disrespectful-tim-anderson">incident with Jose Ramirez</a> only made matters worse. It was a forgettable season to say the least.</p><p>Anderson was hoping to turn things around after signing with the Marlins. The two-time All-Star has continued to struggle with Miami, though. He is currently slashing just .188/.221/.206/.427 across 48 games played. Anderson has yet to hit a home run as well.</p><p>His decline has been difficult to watch. Anderson went from one of MLB’s best players to a .188 hitter on a last place ball club. There is still reason for optimism since Tim Anderson has displayed the ability to excel at the big league level in the past. He is also still only 30 years old, so age should not be an issue either.</p><p>For now, the Marlins will prepare to play the Guardians without Tim Anderson. Friday’s first pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM EST in Miami.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
