They scored their second consecutive victory on Monday night, kicking off their series in Sacramento against the Athletics with a 7-0 win. Boston ace Garrett Crochet was simply <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-ex-player-garrett-crochet-tarik-skubal-cy-young-claim">sensational on the mound</a> in this dismantling of the A’s at Sutter Health Park, with the American League Cy Young Award contender pitching brilliantly.</p><p>The 26-year-old Crochet twirled seven scoreless innings, while allowing zero walks and striking out a total of 10 Athletics hitters through 101 pitches. Such a performance also highlighted Crochet’s ability to steady his boat right away following a rough outing.</p><p>Before his start versus the Athletics, Crochet was shelled by the Cleveland Guardians at Fenway Park on Sept. 2, as he surrendered seven earned runs on nine hits, including four home runs, in six innings of work. He was lucky to escape with a no-decision in that contest, thanks to the Red Sox’s offense that keyed the 11-7 victory, but Crochet showed there that he’s human after all.</p><p>Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story, who hit a home run against the A’s and finished 2-for-4 with a couple of runs scored, had <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/garrett-crochet-hurls-10-strikeout-gem" rel="noopener">nothing but praise</a> for Crochet following the game.</p><p>Crochet’s 10-strikeout start also put him in front of Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers and every other pitcher in the big leagues in the 2025 MLB season in terms of total strikeouts. Through Monday, Crochet has 228 punchouts, six more than Skubal.</p><p>“He bounced back after a tough start last time,” Story said of Crochet, per Theo DeRosa of MLB.com. “Like I’ve said all year, that’s what the big boys do. That’s what the aces do. He’s certainly been that for us ever since he got here. Story was up to bat as he <a href="https://x.com/JomboyMedia/status/1962605082484105714" rel="noopener">blasted the solo shot</a> to right field.</p><p>The ball went up to 306 feet in the air as Guardians right fielder CJ Kayfus went in pursuit to make the catch. However, it proved to be crucial as the Red Sox beat the Guardians 6-4 to begin their series this week.</p><p>Both teams traded blows throughout the course of the game. They were even at three runs apiece after four innings. It was not until the fifth frame when Boston took the lead with a 2-RBI single from Carlos Narvaez. Story’s homer came next, and while Cleveland got a run back in the eighth inning, they didn’t have enough to keep up with the hosts.</p><p>The Red Sox’s bullpen did a solid job at keeping the Guardians scoreless from the third inning to the seventh. They held the opposing offense to eight hits after 34 at-bats, only conceding the homer in the eighth frame. Brayan Bello earned the win as he lasted five innings on the mound, striking out four batters while allowing six hits and three runs. Meanwhile, Aroldis Chapman obtained the save for his 28th of the season.</p><p>Boston improved to a 77-62 record on the season, holding the third spot in the AL East Division standings. They are even with the New York Yankees while being 2.5 games behind the Toronto Blue Jays.</p><p>The Red Sox will prepare for Game 2 of their series against the Guardians. USA Today columnist Bob Nightengale is predicting Story <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2025/08/31/mlb-september-playoff-race-mvp-favorites/85916446007/" rel="noopener">won’t opt out</a> following the 2025 campaign.</p><p>“While Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story has an opt-out after this season, it’s far-fetched to believe he’d turn his use it after having only one good half of a season since he signed his six-year, $140 million contract,” Nightengale wrote Sunday.</p><p>This season, the Red Sox infielder is hitting .258 with 22 home runs. He has also posted 84 RBIs. Following the start of June, Story has really boosted his production. He is hitting .302 with an .875 OPS since June 7, the outlet reported.</p><p>“Yet, to opt out of the final two years and $55 million of his contract would be a financial blunder,” Nightengale added.</p><p>The Red Sox are 75-62 on the season.</p><h2><b>Red Sox are battling Yankees for second in the American League East</b></h2><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-payton-tolle-boston-history-debut">Red Sox are currently third in the American League East standings</a>. The division is extremely competitive this year, with just three and a half games separating the top three teams. The Toronto Blue Jays are in first, with the New York Yankees and then Boston close behind.</p><p>Boston and New York have been trading places for second in the standings for weeks. The Red Sox have won seven of their last 10 games, but so have the Yankees. New York is on a hot-streak and currently has the edge in the AL East.</p><p>The Red Sox struggled at the start of the season, but things have really picked up in the last few months. One of the reasons why is because of Story’s production since June. He is hitting well for Boston, but also providing a lot of leadership in the team’s clubhouse.</p><p>Boston plays the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday, and hopes to avoid a sweep in that series.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
