But his infield partner helped clear Craig Breslow’s to-do list on Tuesday. Story is now on the Red Sox for the 2026 and 2027 seasons, with a club option available for 2028.</p><p>The Red Sox signed Story after a great run with the Colorado Rockies, but he struggled in his first three years at Fenway. After playing 163 games with a .693 OPS in his first three years, he played 155 games with a .741 OPS this past season. He kept up the strong offense into the postseason, going 5-13 in three games against the New York Yankees.</p><p>The future of the Red Sox lies with their three big-name prospects. Roman Anthony announced himself as a future superstar during his 71 games this season. Kristian Campbell struggled, and Marcelo Mayer was injured, but they still have bright futures. Having a veteran like Story under contract takes some pressure off those young players.</p><p>The Red Sox now go into the offseason with one hole to fill in their infield. After a solid season with Boston, Bregman could sign a massive contract somewhere else. If that happens, Mayer would likely become the frontrunner for the hot corner position. But the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-trevor-story-alex-bregmans-impromptu-workout-idea-cubs-loss">two-time World Series Champion provided a great veteran presence in the locker room</a>.</p><p>The Red Sox made one of the biggest moves of the offseason last year when they traded for Garrett Crochet. They may not feel that way now, however, following a blunder-filled week for the veteran shortstop.</p><p>He threw a ball off target to first baseman Nathanial Lowe in Thursday’s 6-1 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, committing his sixth error in the last seven games. Five of those mistakes have been of the throwing variety, per MassLive’s Christopher Smith. This particular gaffe put the leadoff hitter on base in the sixth inning, and Toronto proceeded to score all six of its runs.</p><p>The disastrous turn of events, which ultimately delayed the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-alex-cora-drops-reality-check-on-bostons-playoff-chances">Red Sox’s quest for a playoff berth</a>, is obviously not all on Story. But errors can derail momentum in a hurry, and the two-time All-Star has been woefully unreliable in the field lately. He <a href="https://x.com/SmittyOnMLB/status/1971399079084409254" rel="noopener">explained what his biggest problem is</a> amid the concerning struggles.</p><p>“I think just not finishing the play,” Story told reporters after the game, per Smith. “Late in the season, I think, your body can get tired, but that’s no excuse. It’s really just not finishing the play. So it’s on me. I’ve gotta be obviously very diligent about finishing the throw.”</p><p>Sox fans are grateful that the 32-year-old has been healthy throughout the campaign after playing a combined 163 games in the previous three years, but they probably did not expect the wear-and-tear of the long season to have such a significantly negative effect on his defensive performance.</p><h2><b>The Red Sox need Story and company to tighten up ASAP </b></h2><p>Trevor Story now has 19 errors in 2025, which is tied with New York Yankees SS Anthony Volpe for the most in the American League. He has a -7 defensive runs saved and -8 outs above average, <a href="https://www.fangraphs.com/players/trevor-story/12564/stats?position=SS#advanced-fielding" rel="noopener">according to FanGraphs</a>. Again, Boston trusts that No. 10 is better than the numbers say, but those stats are definitely brutal. He must cure his accuracy problem immediately.</p><p>The Red Sox (87-72) now hold only a one-game lead over the Detroit Tigers for <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-alex-cora-drops-reality-check-on-bostons-playoff-chances">the second Wild Card slot</a> (two clear of the Houston Astros) and will face the AL Central club in their final series of the regular season. Fundamental soundness has long been Boston’s weakness. It is time for the team to decisively change its identity and earn its spot in the playoffs. You’ve gotta score more than one or two to win on a nightly basis.”</p><p>The Red Sox offense managed just five hits in Tuesday’s loss, with their only run coming in the third inning when Carlos Narvaez doubled to left-center and Rob Refsnyder scored on a fielding error by Athletics center fielder Lawrence Butler. Rookie Connelly Early delivered a strong start on the mound, but the bats once again came up short. Boston has now dropped four of its last five games and holds a slim 2 game edge over the Cleveland Guardians in the AL Wild Card standings. The A’s took control in the sixth inning, tying the game on a Tyler Soderstrom double that scored Jacob Wilson. Brett Harris followed with an RBI single to left, bringing in Soderstrom and giving the A’s the lead for good.</p><p>Injuries to key bats like Wilyer Abreu and Roman Anthony have complicated things, but slumps from core hitters like Alex Bregman and Masataka Yoshida have deepened the crisis. As of now, Boston ranks 23rd in OBP and 27th in walk rate since September 3.</p><p>With 11 games left in the regular season, the club needs answers quickly. Story’s honesty may provide a spark, but whether it translates into runs remains to be seen. They scored their second consecutive victory on Monday night, kicking off their series in Sacramento against the Athletics with a 7-0 win. Boston ace Garrett Crochet was simply <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-ex-player-garrett-crochet-tarik-skubal-cy-young-claim">sensational on the mound</a> in this dismantling of the A’s at Sutter Health Park, with the American League Cy Young Award contender pitching brilliantly.</p><p>The 26-year-old Crochet twirled seven scoreless innings, while allowing zero walks and striking out a total of 10 Athletics hitters through 101 pitches. Such a performance also highlighted Crochet’s ability to steady his boat right away following a rough outing.</p><p>Before his start versus the Athletics, Crochet was shelled by the Cleveland Guardians at Fenway Park on Sept. 2, as he surrendered seven earned runs on nine hits, including four home runs, in six innings of work. He was lucky to escape with a no-decision in that contest, thanks to the Red Sox’s offense that keyed the 11-7 victory, but Crochet showed there that he’s human after all.</p><p>Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story, who hit a home run against the A’s and finished 2-for-4 with a couple of runs scored, had <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/garrett-crochet-hurls-10-strikeout-gem" rel="noopener">nothing but praise</a> for Crochet following the game.</p><p>Crochet’s 10-strikeout start also put him in front of Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers and every other pitcher in the big leagues in the 2025 MLB season in terms of total strikeouts. Through Monday, Crochet has 228 punchouts, six more than Skubal.</p><p>“He bounced back after a tough start last time,” Story said of Crochet, per Theo DeRosa of MLB.com. “Like I’ve said all year, that’s what the big boys do. That’s what the aces do. He’s certainly been that for us ever since he got here.
