Instead of hunting big-time free agents, Texas’ focus is more on maintaining stability without breaking the bank. Re-signing Chris Martin suggests as much.</p><p>The Rangers and the right-handed relief pitcher are in <a href="https://x.com/JeffPassan/status/2001064910160019914" rel="noopener">agreement on a one-year contract</a>, according to ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan. Martin, an Arlington native, posted a 2.98 ERA with 43 strikeouts in 42 1/3 innings of work last season. He has loads of experience and a top-15 Cy Young finish to his name. President of baseball operations Chris Young presumably believes the 39-year-old can reinforce the franchise’s pitching-first identity.</p><p>Texas has had an interesting offseason, to say the least. The 2023 champions swapped Marcus Semien for Brandon Nimmo, moved on from Adolis Garcia and Jonah Heim, were linked to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/mlb-rumors-what-must-happen-for-rangers-to-trade-corey-seager">Corey Seager trade rumors</a> and signed catcher Danny Jansen to a two-year, $14.5 million contract (comes with a mutual option). Fans are not certain which direction the Rangers are heading in, but reuniting with Chris Martin is sure to please the masses.</p><p>The 2021 champ returns to a bullpen that was quite impressive this year. If Texas is not going to make a huge addition to the lineup, the next best thing it can do is commit to its pitching staff. Much like last season, this club will probably go as far as its hurlers can take it. After Garcia joined the Phillies, the Rangers <a href="https://x.com/Rangers/status/2000936342918701564" rel="noopener">shared a heartfelt message</a> for the 2023 World Series champion.</p><p>“Thank you, Adolis, for providing endless energy, enthusiasm and passion to our club over the past six seasons,” the Rangers wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter. “You gave us the greatest postseason performance of all-time and now, the history of our organization can’t be told without El Bombi.</p><p>“Best of luck in your next chapter.”</p><p>Garcia, 32, made the All-Star team in 2021 and 2023. He played a pivotal role in the Rangers’ 2023 World Series run. Garcia hasn’t been the same player in recent years, though, as he struggled in both 2024 and 2025.</p><p>The Rangers ultimately made the decision to move on from the 32-year-old. Nevertheless, the organization is clearly grateful for everything he accomplished in Texas.</p><p>Garcia is now set to begin a new chapter with a Phillies team that has serious World Series aspirations. There’s a chance he will play everyday in Philadelphia as well. With a deep lineup around him, perhaps Garcia will bounce back and enjoy a big 2026 campaign with his new ball club.</p><p>Meanwhile, the Rangers will move on in hopes of rebounding after their up and down 2025 season. The team was looking for a power bat in the middle of the lineup, but they failed to sign either one. Schwarber stayed with the Phillies while Alonso surprised the MLB world when he signed with the Baltimore Orioles. The Red Sox did not make a big move, but there is hope they will retain 3rd baseman Alex Bregman and he will sign a new deal to stay at Fenway Park.</p><p>In addition to keeping that mainstay in the lineup, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-soxs-trade-proposal-they-must-offer-dodgers-for-tyler-glasnow">the Red Sox</a> may be involved in making a significant trade that could bring two-time World Series Most Valuable Player Corey Seager to Boston. If the Red Sox acquire the 31-year-old Seager, the corresponding move would likely include sending Trevor Story to the Rangers.</p><p>Story has been with the Red Sox since the 2022 season, but last season was his only season in Boston that was not impacted by injury.</p><p>He was one of the keys to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-rumors-bostons-alex-bregman-free-agency-interest-comes-with-a-ketel-marte-twist">the Red Sox</a> making an appearance in the American League playoffs for the first times since the 2021 season. Story was in the lineup for the Red Sox for 157 games, and that was 88 more than he had appeared in 2023 and 2024 combined.</p><p>Story slashed .263/.308/.433 with 25 home runs and 96 runs batted in. Additionally, Story did a fantastic job on the base paths, stealing 31 bases while he was thrown out just once.</p><h2><b>Seager has proven to be an outstanding big-game performer</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Trevor-Story-had-a-brilliant-2025-season-but-can-he-repeat-that-success-1.jpg"><figcaption>Mandatory Credit: Brad Penner-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>It would be something of a gamble for the Red Sox to trade Story coming off an impactful season, but if Vice President/General Manager Craig Breslow or manager Alex Cora have any doubts about his ability to stay healthy for a full season, it would make sense to consider a trade.</p><p>If the Red Sox were to trade Story for Seager, they would be giving up a right-handed power bat for a left-handed hitter who can hit the ball to all fields and drive in the biggest runs in the most important games.</p><p>Seager has played 11 seasons in the major leagues, including seven with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the last four with the Texas Rangers. He won the World Series MVP with the Dodgers in 2020 and then earned that same award when the Rangers won the World Series in 2023.</p><p>Seager is a five-time All-Star and he hit <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/seageco01.shtml">30 home runs or more</a> in three consecutive seasons from 2022 through 2024. He had a sensational season in 2023 when he slashed .327/.390/.623 with 33 home runs and 83 RBI.</p><p>Injuries held him to 102 games last season, but he played a career high 157 games in 2016 and he nearly matched that in 2022 when he played in 151 games.</p><p>Trading one shortstop for another would seem to make the most sense, but the Red Sox could also make an alternate move that could result in Seager coming to the Red Sox.</p><h2><b>Jarren Duran could be involved in a trade to Rangers</b></h2><p>The Red Sox appear to have a glut of quality outfielders. Roman Anthony was a phenom in his first season before an injury sidelined him in early September.</p><p>After the Red Sox brought him up from Triple-A Worcester, Anthony slashed .292/.396/.463 with 8 home runs and 32 RBI in 71 games and 257 at bats. He should be a mainstay in the middle of the lineup for years to come.</p><p>The Red Sox also have a pair of Gold Glove winners in the outfield in Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu. That means that Jarren Duran could be reduced to the role of 4th outfielder.</p><p>Duran was the MVP of the 2024 All-Star Game and he could be involved in a trade for Seager. Duran had a brilliant season in 2024 when he led the American League in doubles and triples with 48 and 14, respectively. He also hit 21 home runs and drove in 75 runs. Duran had another solid season last year with 41 doubles, 13 triples, 16 home runs and a career-best 84 RBI. He has stolen 82 bases in the last 3 seasons and is one of the fastest runners in either league.</p><p>If the Red Sox had both Story and Seager, one of those two could play 2nd base, a position that Cora’s team has been struggling to fill for multiple seasons.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

In the past season, Alexander threw 97.2 innings for the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago White Sox, finishing with a 2-9 record, 4.98 ERA, 82 strikeouts, 30 walks, and a 1.40 WHIP. A Detroit Tigers second-round pick in 2015, Alexander spent seven years across four major league teams, posting a 4.63 career ERA. He attended Southlake Carroll High School and pitched collegiately at TCU, both within close proximity to Globe Life Field.</p><p>The Rangers’ acquisitions showcase a strategy of low-cost, high-upside bullpen reinforcement. Texas hasn’t returned to the postseason since its surprise World Series victory in 2023. Last season, the Rangers went 81-81. The team parted ways with manager Bruce Bochy after the disappointing campaign, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/texas-rangers/rangers-news-skip-schumaker-new-manager">replacing him with Skip Schumaker</a>.</p><p>Texas began the offseason by <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/mets-rangers-trade-grades-marcus-semien-brandon-nimmo">landing Brandon Nimmo in a trade</a> with the New York Mets. The Rangers sent Marcus Semien to Queens in exchange for the veteran outfielder.</p><p>The team has been quiet in free agency as it braces for potential payroll cuts. However, the Rangers <a href="https://x.com/JeffPassan/status/1999669972629618919" rel="noopener">filled a need</a> on Friday, signing catcher Danny Jansen to a two-year, $14.5 million deal, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The contract includes an additional $1 million in bonuses.</p><h2><b>Rangers value Danny Jansen’s ability to work with pitching staff</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Danny-Jansen-2.jpg"><figcaption>Jim Cowsert-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Texas was in the market for a catcher after non-tendering Jonah Heim. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/texas-rangers/rangers-rumors-2-players-desperate-trade-looming-deadline">Rangers attempted to trade Heim</a> before the tender deadline in November. But after failing to get a deal done, the team moved on.</p><p>With Heim off the roster, the Rangers were down to just Kyle Higashioka, who inked a two-year contract with the team last offseason. Texas <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/texas-rangers/rangers-rumors-texas-wont-pay-jt-realmuto-top-backup-options">wasn’t willing to pay J.T. Realmuto</a> what it would take to land the top free agent catcher on the open market. And so the team pivoted to Jansen.</p><p>Higashioka and Jansen will both play for the Rangers in 2026. While it likely won’t be a strict platoon, both catchers are capable and experienced veterans. Jansen and Higashioka have earned praise for their ability to work with a pitching staff. However, neither offers much offensively.</p><p>Jansen began his career with the Toronto Blue Jays. The Boston Red Sox acquired him in a midseason trade in 2024 and he landed with the Tampa Bay Rays prior to last season. The Rays then <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/milwaukee-brewers/brewers-news-milwaukee-trading-catcher-rays">dealt Jansen to the Milwaukee Brewers</a> at the trade deadline in 2025. After backing up William Contreras in Milwaukee over the second half last year, the Brewers declined Jansen’s option after the season, making him a free agent.</p><p>In addition to Jansen, the Rangers also added pitching depth on Friday. Texas acquired right-handed pitcher Carter Baumler in exchange for right-handed pitcher Jaiker Garcia and cash considerations. Baumler’s trade comes after getting selected by the Pirates in the Rule 5 Draft on Wednesday.</p><p>Baumler was selected by the Orioles in the 2020 MLB Draft. He has spent his minor league career in Baltimore’s system. While he has yet to make his big league debut, the right-handed hurler has displayed promise in the minor leagues. Between pitching at three minor league levels in 2025, Baumler turned in a stellar 2.04 ERA across 28 total appearances out of the bullpen.</p><p>In previous seasons, he had both started and pitched in relief. It seems as if there was an effort to convert him to a full-time reliever in 2025. Perhaps he will impact the Rangers’ bullpen in 2026.</p><p>Garcia landed a minor league contract with the Rangers in 2022. He also has not pitched in MLB, spending the last few years in the Rangers’ organization. His numbers don’t jump off the page — he pitched to a 4.66 ERA across 18 appearances in 2025 — but a fresh start could help him turn things around.</p><p>The Rangers and Pirates have both been busy this offseason. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/texas-rangers/rangers-news-brandon-nimmo-explains-why-texas-can-win-world-series">Texas acquired Brandon Nimmo in a trade</a> for Marcus Semien. They think that Rangers are playing possum in how they’re talking about, ‘Hey, we got to reduce salary,”‘ Buster Olney of ESPN told Paul Hembekides.</p><p>“They think there’s that there’s more it’s a it’s a bluff. That’s what other teams believe.”</p><p>Olney’s take came after he was asked for his thoughts on a potential trade involving the Atlanta Braves and the Rangers, in which Texas would send star shortstop Corey Seager to the National League East ballclub as part of a payroll-saving move.</p><p>Seager inked a massive 10-year, $325 million contract with Texas in 2021. He is to earn $31.5 million in salary annually from 2026 until 2031. So, if the Rangers are looking to cut down on their salary payables, Seager appears to be among the top candidates — if not the top candidate — <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/texas-rangers/rangers-rumors-corey-seager-jacob-degrom-trade-speculation">to be traded away by the Rangers</a>.</p><p>At present, the Rangers have a total payroll of<a href="https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/payroll" rel="noopener"> $144.25 million</a> for the 2026 MLB season, and that should rise, as they only have <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/TEX/texas-rangers-salaries-and-contracts.shtml" rel="noopener">six players with guaranteed contracts</a> for the 2026 campaign. But it doesn’t seem like they’ll dive into the deep end of free agency to find his replacement.</p><p>The Rangers <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6860854/2025/12/04/mlb-offseason-notebook-tatsuya-imai-teoscar-hernandez/">are unlikely going to be able to sign</a> top free agent catcher JT Realmuto, via Ken Rosenthal and Patrick Mooney of The Athletic. They’ve begun exploring other potential options to fill their backstop vacancy.</p><p>“The Rangers need to reconstruct their bullpen and find a catcher to replace Jonah Heim, whom they non-tendered,” Rosenthal and Mooney wrote. “But according to team sources, Texas lacks the payroll flexibility to sign top free-agent catcher J.T. Realmuto, a native of Oklahoma.”</p><p>“Danny Jansen and Victor Caratini are more likely free-agent pursuits, and a trade would be another possibility,” they continued. “The Cleveland Guardians, Detroit Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals are among the teams deep in young catching.”</p><p>Realmuto is entering free agency after a seven-year run with the Philadelphia Phillies. Over his entire 12-year MLB career, the backstop has hit .270 with 180 home runs, 677 RBIs and 104 stolen bases. A three-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/philadelphia-phillies/3-teams-that-could-steal-j-t-realmuto-from-phillies-in-free-agency">Realmuto will be the most coveted catcher</a> on the free agent market.</p><p>Which has the Rangers looking towards secondary targets. Danny Jansen hit .215 with 14 home runs and 36 RBIs over 98 games between the Tampa Bay Rays and Milwaukee Brewers in 2025. Caratini spent the year with the Houston Astros, hitting .259 with 12 home runs and 46 RBIs over 114 games.</p><p>Neither player brings what Realmuto does to the table.
