They hoped that he could add legitimacy to the franchise and also foster the growth of a young pitching rotation. With no divisional titles or successive playoff appearances, San Francisco formed one of MLB’s most unconventional dynasties. Verlander’s tutelage can do wonders for all of these men.</p><p>He can be a catalyst for the change that Giants fans crave. That begins by improving upon last year’s 5.48 ERA and 1.38 WHIP, but it might also entail a little voluntary mentorship. On Tuesday, one of the biggest names on the market found his next home as legendary starting pitcher Justin Verlander <a href="https://x.com/JeffPassan/status/1876780183174168633" rel="noopener">agreed to a one-year deal</a> with the San Francisco Giants, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.</p><p>“BREAKING: Right-hander Justin Verlander and the San Francisco Giants are in agreement on a one-year contract, pending physical, sources tell ESPN,” Passan reported on X, formerly Twitter. “The future Hall of Famer, who turns 42 next month, will spend his 20th season with the Giants.”</p><p>Verlander’s <a href="https://x.com/JesseRogersESPN/status/1876788218135228762" rel="noopener">deal is for</a> $15 million, according to ESPN’s Jesse Rogers.</p><p>Verlander started just 17 games last season for the Houston Astros, finishing with a 5-6 record and a 5.48 ERA while striking out 74 batters in 90.1 innings. Despite his struggles last season, the Giants and their fans still have hope that the Hall of Fame level stuff is still in there for Verlander.</p><p>That stuff is what has gotten him to where he is in his career, where he is known as one of the best pitchers of this generation. Verlander started his career with the Detroit Tigers, where he spent 13 seasons as one of the best right-handers in the MLB. During that time, Verlander racked up the accolades: he won AL Rookie of the Year in 2006, AL CY Young and AL MVP in 2011 and led the MLB in strikeouts and innings pitches three times each during his time in Detroit.</p><p>During that iconic 2011 season, Verlander finished with a stunning 24-5 record and led the majors in wins. He also led the MLB in starts (34), innings (251), strikeouts (250) and WHIP (0.92). During that season, Verlander also led the American League with a 2.40 ERA.</p><p>After leaving Detroit, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/astros-news-houston-stunning-justin-verlander-decision">Verlander went to the Houston Astros</a>, where he was still one of the most reliable arms in the league. He won two more Cy Young awards while in Houston, in 2019 and 2022, and won World Series titles in 2017 and 2022. During that 2022 season, which he played after missing the entire 2021 campaign with an injury, Verlander led the MLB with an astonishing 1.75 ERA in 28 starts.</p><p>The Giants needed to add some more pitching if they want to compete in an NL West that is loading up on the mound. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/diamondbacks-news-corbin-burnes-shocking-210-million-contract-arizona">Arizona Diamondbacks brought in Corbin Burnes</a> as their new ace and the Los Angeles Dodgers are still in the mix for Japanese star Roki Sasaki while also expecting Shohei Ohtani to be back on the bump in 2025. The San Francisco Giants, Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago Cubs and Detroit Tigers are <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/best-remaining-mlb-free-agents-2025" rel="noopener">all possible destinations</a> for Flaherty, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.</p><p>Additionally, the Baltimore Orioles have considered linking back up with the 29-year-old right-hander. Though, a reunion seems a little less likely following the organization’s acquisition of 41-year-old Charlie Morton. This franchise’s identity is often tied to the strength of the starting staff, and Flaherty can give San Francisco the firepower it needs to compete in a crowded National League. And the Toronto Blue Jays and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-rumors-blue-jays-giants-emerge-as-front-runners-for-corbin-burnes">San Francisco Giants are reportedly willing</a> to pay a hefty price to sign Burnes.</p><p>But while Toronto and San Francisco are in on the chase for Burnes, they’re going to have some stiff competition.</p><p>“The Giants and Blue Jays are among a half-dozen teams showing significant interest in star right-hander Corbin Burnes, and new Giants baseball president Buster Posey met late Tuesday with Burnes’ agent, Scott Boras,” <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/12/11/sports/giants-and-blue-jays-making-strong-push-for-corbin-burnes/" rel="noopener">according to the</a> New York Post’s Jon Heyman. “Both these teams put in outstanding efforts to sign big-time players, and while both have experienced some struggles in that area, it’s possible the Giants could hold an allure for Burnes, a California native who’s spent his career in Milwaukee and Baltimore.</p><p>“The Jays, at many times the dollar leader in the Juan Soto sweepstakes, also are in the mix.”</p><p>Heyman also wrote <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-rumors-orioles-eyeing-dylan-cease-trade-with-corbin-burnes-reunion-looking-unlikely">that the Baltimore Orioles</a>, to whom Burnes was traded to by the Milwaukee Brewers before the 2024 season, are also interested in bringing back Burnes. In his lone season with Baltimore, Burnes earned All-Star and All-MLB First Team honors after a year in which he posted a 2.92 ERA, 181 strikeouts, 3.55 FIP, and 1.096 WHIP.</p><p>The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, both of whom were reportedly interested in Burnes <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-rumors-giants-emerge-major-threat-sign-max-fried">and Fried</a>, “presumably” have “diminished” interest in Burnes now, according to Heyman. The Blue Jays, as Heyman mentioned, were also bidding to sign Soto this offseason. These deals should put a huge smile on Corbin Burnes’ face, as not only is he the undisputed best available starter on the market, he is also going to command an even heftier sum considering his durability, consistency, and his age (he is younger than both Snell and Fried).</p><p>To that end, two teams have emerged as the favorite to get Burnes’ signature on the dotted line. According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the Toronto Blue Jays and San Francisco Giants <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/max-fried-signing-with-yankees-analysis" rel="noopener">are the “front-runners”</a> for the 30-year-old starting pitcher, with the two ballclubs preparing to offer a huge contract that could be worth as much as $240 million.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-rumors-giants-shohei-ohtani-dodgers-blue-jays-interest">Blue Jays and Giants</a> have been among the most willing spenders over the past few offseasons, with both teams being prominent suitors for Shohei Ohtani last year. And with these two teams desperately needing a major talent infusion to fuel their playoff hopes after finishing below .500 and missing the postseason in 2024, being atop the Burnes sweepstakes queue makes total sense.</p><p>If anything, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/blue-jays-news-finalizing-andres-gimenez-trade-with-guardians">Blue Jays may have more financial wiggle room</a> considering that they’ve been whiffing on their major targets in recent seasons. The Giants, meanwhile, recently signed Willy Adames to a seven-year, $182 million contract to be their new franchise shortstop, a significant commitment that could affect the money they have for other free-agent pursuits. He <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/grading-giants-182-million-willy-adames-contract">signed a seven-year, $182 million deal</a> after a great season with the Milwaukee Brewers. He now joins a team that had only 80 wins last season but has high expectations for 2025. Giants ace Logan Webb texted Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle <a href="https://x.com/susanslusser/status/1866627492666077616" rel="noopener">about the</a> addition of Willy Adames and had a funny quip welcoming his new teammate.</p><p>“Couldn’t be more excited to play with Willy,” Webb wrote, per Slusser on X, formerly Twitter. “From the first time I played against him I knew that was a guy I’d love to share a field with some day. Plus it means I won’t be giving up any more homers to him.”</p><p>Webb isn’t kidding either, as Adames had decent success against him with the Brewers. He is 4-9 with two homers and three RBIs in his career <a href="https://www.statmuse.com/mlb/ask/willy-adames-vs-logan-webb-log" rel="noopener">against his new</a> ace, per StatMuse. It’s not just Webb that Adames has crushed in his career. He has had success hitting in Oracle Park, something not everyone can say. He hit .321 with two homers and nine RBIs in 16 games as the visitor against the Giants.</p><p>The Giants had their struggles last year but are returning a solid core on offense and a deep rotation. He had never posted more than eight in a season before that, so Giants fans should not expect that to continue. The great defense, home-run power, and high average are staples of his game.</p><p>The Giants have the impossible task of sharing a division with the Los Angeles Dodgers. They spent over one billion dollars last offseason and won the World Series in response.
