The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-rafael-devers-blockbuster-red-sox-trade">Giants traded for Boston Red Sox slugger Rafael Devers</a> to bolster their lineup. However, San Francisco is still under pressure to keep up with the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers. Pitching remains the Giants’ biggest problem, but Arizona Diamondbacks starter Zac Gallen could help fix it.</p><p>Gallen is not the biggest name on the trade market when it comes to pitchers. However, he and Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara are ripe for buy-low deals. If contenders can get them at a good price, they could look back and point at the trade as the reason why they took home the title in October. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-news-buster-posey-explains-timing-rafael-devers-trade">Buster Posey has proven that he is capable of making big-time decisions in trade</a>.</p><p>The first three spots in San Francisco’s order are set with Logan Webb, Robbie Ray, and Justin Verlander. Outside of that trio, the Giants’ starters have been hit and miss. While teams can endure a lack of pitching in the regular season, it is at a premium once the playoffs begin. Past champions have shown that adding a starter at the deadline can take you from contender to favorite.</p><p>Sending Gallen away would be a tough pill to swallow for the Diamondbacks. Arizona has talent on their roster, but they have not put things together so far this season. After <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/arizona-diamondbacks/diamondbacks-news-corbin-burnes-season-ending-tommy-john-surgery">Corbin Burnes’ Diamondbacks debut season ended early</a>, so their their goal of contention. While inter-division trades are rare, San Francisco needs to do whatever is necessary to win in the fall.</p><p>Here is a trade that the Giants could offer the Diamondbacks for Gallen before the July 31 deadline.</p><p>Giants receive: SP Zac Gallen</p><p>Diamondbacks receive: 2B Christian Koss and SP Jacob Bresnahan</p><h2>Why should the Giants trade for Gallen?</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Arizona-Diamondbacks-starting-pitcher-Zac-Gallen.jpg"><figcaption>Mark J. The teams that made it to and won the World Series complemented one another in all facets of the game. San Francisco manager Bob Melvin is close to capturing that magic. However, he might need an upgrade near the end of his rotation to really start rolling.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-news-justin-verlander-believes-he-found-a-fix-to-problems">Verlander feels like he has figured something out in his debut season with the Giants</a>. However, the pitchers behind him on the schedule cannot hold a candle to him. His numbers are not great in 2025, but Gallen is an All-Star level talent that can hold his own in Melvin’s rotation. Of the pitchers on the market, Gallen has the most recent playoff success.</p><p>While Gallen would be a great fit in San Francisco, suitors are anticipating that the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/arizona-diamondbacks/predicting-diamondbacks-next-big-trade-before-mlb-trade-deadline">Diamondbacks will hear many offers from contenders</a>. For a team looking to remain competitive for the foreseeable future, trading for Gallen is a matter of deciding what teams are willing to give up. Depending on how things break, each team could be under a different amount of pressure to get something done.</p><p>If Gallen does end up in San Francisco, things get very interesting. The Giants will have the veteran pitcher until the end of the season. Posey and the front office would then have the inside track on the race to give the former All-Star a long-term deal. If he signs, San Francisco has three high-level pitchers in their prime to build around.</p><h2>Why should the Diamondbacks trade for Koss and Bresnahan?</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Christian-Koss-swings-the-bat-for-Giants.jpg"><figcaption>John Hefti-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Diamondbacks, for better or worse, are turning their sights toward the future. Ketel Marte, Arizona’s All-Star starter, continues to play like an MVP. Unfortunately, the team around him is not good enough to take advantage. Sending their beloved pitcher to a division rival is a risky move. However, the young players they would receive in return make it worthwhile.</p><p>Gallen wants a long-term deal this winter. At this point, it does not look like Arizona wants to sign that check. If that is the case, moving him now for the best possible package is the best move. It is a shrewd move, but a necessary one for a team looking to get back to the World Series without breaking the bank.</p><p>Koss is on the Giants’ injured list right now. However, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-news-christian-koss-hits-bouncing-2-run-homer-vs-marlins">Giants youngster has shown flashes</a>, even if it is a smaller sample size. His defensive versatility would be a big help for Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo as well. Given more opportunity to show what he can do, Koss could develop into a great complementary piece to Marte in the Arizona infield.</p><p>Bresnahan, on the other hand, is the result of careful cultivation by the Giants. The 20-year-old is still a couple years away from the major league but shows great promise at Single-A San Jose. The lefty has a <a href="https://www.mlb.com/milb/prospects/giants/jacob-bresnahan-815298" rel="noopener">3.18 ERA across 13 starts</a> this season, a great number for a pitcher with more than 50 innings under his belt.</p><p>If this trade happens, it would be historic. He’s likely to play a rehab game in Reno tomorrow with Triple-A Sacramento. The San Francisco third baseman’s presence would help stabilize both the infield defense and the lineup as the Giants begin a crucial six-game home stand on July 7th against the Philadelphia Phillies and Los Angeles Dodgers before the All-Star break.</p><p>Since Chapman’s injury on June 8 vs. the Atlanta Braves, the club has gone just 8-13, dropping from a .569 win percentage with him to .421 without. At 46–41, San Francisco now sits third in the NL West and just outside the final Wild Card spot.</p><p>The latest rehab news points to a positive trajectory. Chapman began dry swings by June 24th, then advanced to fielding, throwing, and hitting off a tee at about 85% intensity. With live batting practice now behind him and a rehab assignment in Reno on the horizon, he could be activated in time for this weekend’s series against the Athletics.</p><p>Through 65 games this season, Chapman is batting .243 with 12 home runs, 30 RBIs, a .360 on-base percentage, and an .812 OPS—well above league average.</p><p>Defensively, he’s among the league’s best as well, ranking in the 85th percentile for Outs Above Average and posting a 2.7 WAR.</p><p>The club has lacked consistency in the hot corner in his absence, rotating multiple players without much success at the plate or in the field. Chapman’s leadership and veteran presence have also been missed in the dugout, where his energy and focus have long set the tone for this team.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-disastrous-showing-vs-diamondbacks-highlights-brutal-trend">Giants playoff chances have taken a hit</a> without their star third baseman. Still, he is hitting a .203 batting average in 59 at-bats with two home runs and six RBIs. However, Devers would say in an interview with The San Francisco Standard that he is<a href="https://sfstandard.com/2025/07/03/rafael-devers-sf-giants-trade-adjustment/" rel="noopener"> “very comfortable”</a> at the moment after a whirlwind of the past few weeks getting acclimated to his new team.</p><p>“I’m feeling very comfortable right now,” Devers said. “Things aren’t going the way I want for me or the team, but I know eventually I’m going to get out of it and the team is going to get out of it.”</p><p>Despite having some health issues, he has still played every game since the trade was made official. While he admits it did impact his play, he is not using that as an “excuse.”</p><p>“Yes,” Devers said, “it does affect me a little bit when I hit, but that’s not an excuse. However, understanding might be one of the first steps in breaking out of the slump, as he would emphasize how it does not bother him and how it “happens to all the hitters.”</p><p>“No, it doesn’t bother me,” Devers said. “It happens to all the hitters. I know I’m trying to make my adjustments. I know that I’m trying to contribute to the team, trying to get my hits and also contribute to wins.”</p><p>When it comes to the position he will play for San Francisco, it seems that he’s heading to first base once he is 100 percent healthy, though he played third base with Boston. As the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/1-player-san-francisco-giants-trade-before-2025-deadline">Giants look to improve through the trade deadline</a>, the team also looks for improvement from the players currently on the roster, including Verlander, as the veteran believes a breakthrough is coming.</p><p>While Verlander hasn’t been horrid, he currently has a 4.26 ERA, 55 strikeouts, and a disappointing record of 0-5, being winless through 13 starts, which, according to The Athletic, it’s the longest streak in franchise history since at least 1901. His season was also struck by having a strained right pec that kept him out almost a month, but now, Verlander feels that he has <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6470340/2025/07/03/rosenthal-justin-verlander-notes/" rel="noopener">“found something mechanically.”</a></p><p>“I feel like I kind of found something mechanically,” Verlander said. “I’m hopeful it’s going to allow me to pitch the way I feel I still can. I’m still throwing 94-95 pretty consistently. I know that’s good enough to have success. I just need to find a way to make it click. However, Verlander hasn’t been this confident all year long that there is a light at the end of the tunnel in regards to his underwhelming season, believing that with the injury and small sample size, a “drastic decision” can’t be made.</p><p>“I was hurt for a month. It’s still a small sample size. You can’t make a drastic decision based on that,” Verlander said. “You just try to pitch better, and hopefully the wins will follow. You’ve got to be pretty objective. Yeah, I’ve given us some chances. But I need to pitch better. I do think I’m capable of that. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t still be playing.”</p><p>However, Verlander’s statistics haven’t been encouraging, though there is always room for improvement as his average fastball velocity is below league average (93.9 mph) and his strikeout rate (26th percentile) is jading, per The Athletic. Still, the star believes that before the injury, he was pitching better.</p><p>“I do, actually, I really do,” Verlander said. “I was starting to pitch a little bit better before I got hurt. Particularly right now, I feel like I’m on to something mechanically. The D-backs launched four home runs — including back-to-back blasts from Randal Grichuk and James McCann — while Zac Gallen dominated on the mound in what felt like a statement win for Arizona and a red flag for San Francisco.</p><p>After jumping out to a 2-0 lead behind a solo homer from Willy Adames and a Patrick Bailey groundout that scored Daniel Johnson, the Giants offense flatlined again. From the third inning on, it was all Arizona. San Francisco managed just five hits total and fell victim to a barrage of long balls, poor defense, and yet another night of pitching struggles.</p><p>Hayden Birdsong, who looked locked in early with five strikeouts through two innings, completely unraveled in the fourth. The young right-hander opened the inning by throwing 10 straight balls, issuing back-to-back walks and then grooving a fastball that Jake McCarthy crushed for a go-ahead three-run homer. Birdsong exited after four innings, allowing four runs (three earned) with four walks.</p><p>The outing marked Birdsong’s third straight start allowing at least four runs. Since joining the rotation in May, he has a 5.54 ERA and has failed to complete five innings in his last three outings. The potential is there, but the consistency is nowhere to be found.</p><h2><b>Giants continue to struggle, in danger of getting swept by D-Backs</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Rafael-Devers-12.jpg"><figcaption>Matt Kartozian-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The bullpen didn’t offer much help either. Carson Seymour relieved Birdsong and was tagged for four runs across three innings, though only two were earned thanks to two costly passed balls by catcher Patrick Bailey — both of which directly led to D-backs runs. Bailey, usually among the most dependable defenders behind the dish, had an uncharacteristically poor night.</p><p>His first passed ball in the third allowed McCann to advance, setting up Geraldo Perdomo’s RBI single. His second came on a dropped third strike with two outs in the fifth, keeping the inning alive for Lourdes Gurriel Jr., who promptly smashed a two-run homer to extend Arizona’s lead. The following inning, Grichuk and McCann went back-to-back to make it 8-2.</p><p>On the other side, Gallen was in vintage form. After allowing two early runs, he retired 12 straight Giants and finished with seven innings of one-run ball (one run was unearned), striking out 10 and walking none. He collected 16 whiffs — eight on his signature curveball — in his most dominant start since early June.</p><p>This latest loss drops the Giants to 45-41. Just three weeks ago, they were tied for first in the NL West. Now, they’ve lost seven of their last eight and 13 of 18 since June 12. They’re now 8.5 games back of the Dodgers and only 1.5 games ahead of the Diamondbacks, who have won the first two games of this series.</p><p>The Giants’ issues run deep — inconsistent starting pitching, a cold offense (just nine runs in their last five games), and now even their usually sharp defense is cracking. With Matt Chapman and Casey Schmitt sidelined, Wilmer Flores returned to third base for the first time in over a year. While he handled his lone opportunity cleanly, it’s clear the Giants are stretching to patch the infield together.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/giants-news-bob-melvin-2026-option-posed-statement">Manager Bob Melvin</a> said pregame that Flores was “up for it” and wanted to help the team win.
