However, that does not appear to be the case after all.</p><p>Despite the initial comment and subsequent statements <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2025/04/06/mathew-bowyer-gambling-ippei-mizuhara-sentencing/82955010007/" rel="noopener">that he and the</a> team had never been particularly close on a number, it seems as if <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/mlb-rumors-blue-jays-closing-in-vladimir-guerrero-jr-contract-extension">Guerrero will put his name on the dotted line soon</a>.</p><p>“While there was a rash of extensions this past week, no extension is more widely anticipated than the $500 million contract that Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is expected to receive, perhaps this week,” USA Today’s Bob Nightengale wrote.</p><p>“Despite Guerrero’s spring-training deadline of the start of spring training, the Blue Jays and Guerrero’s representatives continue to negotiate, exchanging figures and are expected to reach a resolution any day.”</p><p>Nightengale wrote that the deal would keep Guerrero with the Blue Jays for “at least” 14 years, which tracks with previous reports during spring training that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-rumors-vladimir-guerrero-jr-inches-closer-500-million-contract-extension">Guerrero was seeking a deal worth about $500 million over 14 years</a>. If Guerrero were, indeed, to sign that contract, it would become the third-largest deal in MLB history in terms of total money, the second-longest contract in MLB history, and it would put Guerrero among the top 10 highest-paid players in MLB in terms of average salary.</p><p>A year after Shohei Ohtani signed a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-news-gm-sounds-off-juan-soto-deals-impact-vladimir-guerrero-jr">Juan Soto was at the center of a bidding war</a>, reportedly between the New York Yankees, New York Mets, and Boston Red Sox. Ultimately, Soto inked the single largest contract in sports history; his 15-year, $765 million deal is both the longest and largest in total value ever.</p><p>Guerrero never really had a chance to get nearly that much money, but he is still worth a lot. Over the past four seasons, Guerrero has hit 136 home runs and drove in 405 runs, and, in the process, become a four-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger winner. Additionally, he won a Gold Glove in 2022.</p><p>Guerrero has had a relatively slow start to the 2025 season, evident by his batting splits (.286 AVG / .350 OBP / .371 SLG). While <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-news-vladimir-guerrero-jr-contract-extension-update-2025">Guerrero is focused on the present, his future remains a hot topic</a> — and fans in Queens certainly let their imaginations run wild.</p><p>“That’s normal for me,” Guerrero said via interpreter. “I’m never booed in other stadiums.”</p><p>Still, his teammate Chad Green, who spent seven seasons with the Yankees, was surprised by the reaction.</p><p>“They’re smart baseball fans,” Green said. “That was the first thing that came to mind.”</p><p>Guerrero reached base three times in Friday’s 5-0 loss to the Mets, and while his on-field presence made an impact, the pregame chatter surrounded his potential long-term future. I don’t know anything at this point.”</p><p>That hasn’t stopped social media buzz, especially after Guerrero was spotted chatting pregame with Mets stars Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso, as well as Juan Soto. The interactions, shared by SNY’s social media, triggered plenty of wild speculation.</p><p>“Vladdy is literally BEGGING to be a Met,” one X user joked in a post that quickly went viral. MLB insider Jon Heyman was quick to shut it down: “That is assuredly not what’s happening here,” he wrote. “He has consistently said he wants to stay a Jay.”</p><p>But even if Guerrero wants to remain in Toronto, the reality of business in baseball looms large. He and the Blue Jays failed to reach a deal before his self-imposed February 18 deadline, and with free agency on the horizon, pressure mounts on the organization to get something done.</p><p>Guerrero is still just 26 years old and already a four-time All-Star with two Silver Slugger Awards. He hit 30 home runs in 2024 and owns a .940 OPS over the past year, proving his place among baseball’s elite. He’s also been incredibly durable, playing at least 156 games each season since 2021.</p><p>Despite a slow power start in 2025 — he’s still looking for his first home run — Guerrero entered Saturday hitting .267 with three doubles and three RBIs. If no extension materializes, the Blue Jays may be forced to make a franchise-altering decision before the trade deadline. When Quinn isn't producing content for CP,  he's writing sports betting predictions for numerous sites across North America.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">MLB</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/blue-jays-rumors-new-vladimir-guerrero-jr-contract-offer-on-table-opening-day">The Toronto Blue Jays failed to sign Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to a contract extension before Opening Day</a>, but it appears they’re nearing an agreement on a new deal.</p><p>An announcement is<a href="https://x.com/hgomez27/status/1908535979138232801" rel="noopener"> reportedly expected</a> in the coming days, via Hector Gomez:</p><p>“According to a person close to Vladimir Guerrero Jr., the Blue Jays could make the official announcement of the extension this weekend.”</p><p>Insider Jon Heyman recently said that the belief is Toronto will sign their slugger to a deal around $500 million across 14-15 years, which will pay him over $30 million per season. Guerrero Jr is set to hit free agency this winter if he remains unsigned. The Blue Jays can’t risk losing their best hitter.</p><p>While he struggled at times for a couple of seasons in 2022 and 2023, Guerrero Jr bounced back in 2024. He slashed .323 with 30 home runs and 103 RBI. The 26-year-old was named an All-Star for the fourth time in his career as well. While Toronto hasn’t had a lot of playoff success with the Guerrero Jr-Bo Bichette duo, there’s no question that keeping one of them, at the very least, is crucial for this franchise moving forward.</p><p>Guerrero Jr is off to a respectable start in 2025, hitting .267 in eight games. He’s yet to go deep, but the infielder will surely find his power stroke sooner rather than later.</p><p>In an interview with ESPN last month,<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/blue-jays-news-vladimir-guerrero-jr-reveals-600-million-contract"> Guerrero Jr revealed he was asking the Blue Jays for near $600 million</a>:</p><p>“It’s much less than Soto. We’re talking about many fewer millions than Soto, more than a hundred million less. … It was the same number of years [as Soto’s contract], but it didn’t reach [$600 million]. The last number we gave them as a counteroffer didn’t reach 600,” Guerrero said.</p><p>“I know the business. I lowered the salary demands a bit, but I also lowered the number of years. … I’m looking for 14 [years]. Although rumors of a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/blue-jays-rumors-vladimir-guerrero-jr-inches-closer-500-million-contract-extension">Guerrero-Blue Jays contract extension</a> swirl, the star infielder said he “<a href="https://x.com/jorgecastillo/status/1908290406355198095" rel="noopener">doesn’t know anything</a>” about potential updates on the situation.</p><p>“Well, until now, I don’t know anything,” Guerrero said, via Jorge Castillo of ESPN. “I’ve always tried to talk to my agent and I’ve always left that to my agent. I focus on playing. Until now, I don’t know what you’re talking about.”</p><h2><b>Will Vladimir Guerrero Jr. sign contract extension with Blue Jays?</b></h2><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/blue-jays-news-mark-shapiro-vladimir-guerrero-jr-contract-extension">Blue Jays would seemingly like to get a deal done</a>. Guerrero may be open to an extension, but he could also choose to test free agency. The 26-year-old is in the final season of his contract with Toronto. He will likely receive plenty of attention in free agency if an extension does not come to fruition.</p><p>If the Blue Jays fail to sign Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to an extension, Toronto may consider moving him at the trade deadline. Otherwise they would risk losing him in free agency for almost nothing in return.</p><p>Guerrero is a four-time All-Star. He crushed 30 home runs and recorded a .940 OPS during the 2024 campaign. He has also been extremely durable in recent seasons. In fact, Guerrero has appeared in at least 156 games in each season since 2021.</p><p>Re-signing him in free agency will be difficult once the top teams get involved in the sweepstakes. The Blue Jays’ best chance of keeping Guerrero around for the long-term future is to sign him to an extension as soon as possible.</p><p>As Vladimir Guerrero Jr. said, though, he is strictly focused on baseball at the moment.
