He and Seattle Mariners teammate Julio Rodriguez are using the new bats to help them swing for the fences this season. Unfortunately for Raleigh, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-news-105-million-contract-extension-star-catcher">he signed a six-year extension</a> with general manager Dan Wilson without knowing how much better he is with the new bat.</p><p>Raleigh joins many MLB players taking advantage of the new bat, one of the main points of emphasis this season. Before swinging the new bat, Raleigh had a reputation as a good-hitting catcher. The new bat is a catalyst for his newfound power.</p><p>Raleigh has seven home runs in 18 games so far this season, including two on Wednesday against the Cincinnati Reds. Mariners pitcher Bryce Miller <a href="https://x.com/DKramer_/status/1912687231040442660" rel="noopener">shared empathy with his teammate</a> after his stellar performance, according to Mariners reporter Daniel Kramer.</p><p>“I told him he maybe should have waited for the [contract] extension until after he found the torpedo bat,” Miller said about Raleigh’s performance. “But I’m sure Mariners, financially, are happy they locked him up before he got the torpedo.”</p><p>Raleigh is the bright spot on a team that is struggling offensively to start the 2025 season. He leads the team in batting average, and home runs and is tied for the team lead in hits. Because of his offensive prowess to start the year, Raleigh is an early American League All-Star candidate.</p><p>Torpedo bats are taking the league by storm, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-rob-manfred-breaks-silence-torpedo-bat-hubbub">causing arguments around the league</a>. Rodriguez, Aaron Judge, and Francisco Lindor all use the new bats. The new bats have some old-fashioned fans complaining, but the league determined that they are not illegal.</p><p>Cal Raleigh is one of the players benefiting the most from the new bats. Let’s answer that question by picking out the best Mariners players of all time and examine why they ended up on this list.</p><h2><b>10. Jay Buhner</b></h2><p>Position: Right Field</p><p>Years with Mariners: 1988-2001</p><p>Notable Accolades: 1996 AL All-Star, 1996 Gold Glove winner</p><p>Jay Buhner wasn’t always a key piece of the Mariners during his 14 seasons with them, but he quietly became one of the best players in their history with a solid seven-season stretch midway through his career.</p><p>Buhner eventually found his way into the lineup on an everyday basis, and while he only made it to the All-Star Game once, his stretch from 1995-1997, in which he hit more than 40 home runs and drove in at least 109 runs in each season, was one of the best in Mariners history.</p><p>Buhner’s peak didn’t last long, but he was so good during that time that he ends up sneaking onto this list at No. 10.</p><h2><b>9. Robinson Cano</b></h2><p>Position: Second Base</p><p>Years with Mariners: 2014-2018</p><p>Notable Accolades: Three-time AL All-Star</p><p>Robinson Cano will likely be remembered more for outrageously expensive contract than what he actually did with the Mariners, but during his five season stretch in Seattle, Cano played some really good baseball. He traded contact for power and power for contact from time to time at the plate, but he was still easily Seattle’s best hitter every season he was with them.</p><p>Cano earned three of his eight All-Star berths with the Mariners, and finished in the Top 10 of the American League MVP race twice as well. Despite that, signs of his regression quickly set in, and the Marines traded him halfway through his 10-year deal to the New York Mets. Still, his time with the Marines was memorable, even if it ended on a fairly sour note.</p><h2><b>8. Jamie Moyer</b></h2><p>Position: Starting Pitcher</p><p>Years with Mariners: 1996-2006</p><p>Notable Accolades: 2003 AL All-Star</p><p>Jamie Moyer might have the most interesting career in the history of the MLB. He never really established himself in the MLB until well after his 30th birthday and ended up finding a consistent home with the Mariners in 1996. Moyer only had two losing seasons during his time with Seattle, which is rather impressive considering their history of losing.</p><p>Either way, Moyer was never the best pitcher, and he had some truly ugly seasons along the way, but he never gave up. Moyer earned his first and only All-Star berth in 2003 when he was 40 years old and finished in the top six of the AL Cy Young race three times. Moyer played in MLB until he was 49, but it was his years with Seattle that helped him establish his legacy.</p><h2><b>7. Kyle Seager</b></h2><p>Position: Third Base</p><p>Years with Mariners: 2011-2021</p><p>Notable Accolades: 2014 AL All-Star, 2014 Gold Glove winner</p><p>If nothing else, Kyle Seager was consistent throughout his career with the Mariners. Aside from his initial 53-game stint in the majors in 2011 and the shortened 2020 season, Seager hit at least 20 home runs every season. His production varied from time to time, but for the most part, the Mariners always knew what they were getting with Seager.</p><p>He doesn’t post gaudy numbers, but it never really mattered because he was the best player on some pretty bad Mariners teams. It’s a shame that Seager decided to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mariners-news-seattle-third-baseman-kyle-seager-announces-retirement" rel="noopener">call it a career</a> right as Seattle was beginning to find some success, but it’s clear his career will always be appreciated by the Mariners.</p><h2><b>6. Alex Rodriguez</b></h2><p>Position: Shortstop and Third Base</p><p>Years with Mariners: 1994-2000</p><p>Notable Accolades: Four-time AL All-Star, Four-time Silver Slugger</p><p>Long before Alex Rodriguez went on to become a New York Yankees legend, he made his name with the Seattle Mariners as one of the brightest young stars in the game. Rodriguez truly broke out in 1996 when he hit .358 and finished second in the AL MVP race, and the rest is history.</p><p>Rodriguez hit at least 41 home runs in his final three seasons with the Mariners, and while he didn’t end up posting the huge numbers he had with the Texas Rangers and the Yankees, Rodriguez still did more than enough to cement his place as one of the greatest Mariners of all time despite his short stint there.</p><h2><b>5. Johnson got better with age, and over his time with the Mariners, he turned himself into the pitcher that eventually would win four straight Cy Young awards with the Arizona Diamondbacks.</p><p>Johnson won the Cy Young in 1995 for the M’s and finished in the Top 3 three times, showcasing early hints of his dominant stretch with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He cemented his Hall of Fame status with other MLB teams, but he managed to figure things out with Seattle and will still go down as one of the best pitchers in their history.</p><h2><b>4. Felix Hernandez</b></h2><p>Position: Starting Pitcher</p><p>Years with Mariners: 2005-2019</p><p>Notable Accolades: 2010 AL Cy Young, Six-time AL All-Star, Perfect game on Aug. 15, 2012</p><p>Felix Hernandez’s peak was somewhat short, but during his heyday, there wasn’t a better pitcher in the MLB than him. Hernandez would mow down hitters on a nightly basis for the Mariners, and from 2007 to 2015, he almost never missed a start. Hernandez won the AL Cy Young in 2010 with a wildly impressive campaign, and finished in the Top 10 of the voting on five other occasions.</p><p>His arm eventually wore down in his early 30s, but that’s what usually happens when you pitch more than 200 innings in eight straight seasons. That shouldn’t take away from everything that Hernandez accomplished, though, and he is easily the greatest pitcher in Mariners history.</p><h2><b>3. Ichiro Suzuki</b></h2><p>Position: Right Field</p><p>Years with Mariners: 2001-2012, 2018-2019</p><p>Notable Accolades: 2001 AL MVP, 2001 AL Rookie of the Year, 10-time AL All-Star, 10-time Gold Glove winner, Three-time Silver Slugger</p><p>Ichiro Suzuki’s peak, similar to Hernandez, didn’t last as long as other players, but he was one of the most captivating players in the league. In fact, if this was a list of most popular Mariners players, he would be higher on this list, if not No. 1.</p><p>Suzuki came over to the MLB in 2001 from Japan, and immediately won Rookie of the Year and MVP as he led the M’s to an MLB-tying 116 wins. Ichiro racked up more than 200 hits in 10 consecutive seasons to start his career with the Mariners, and he never truly stopped hitting the ball. In fact, he set the MLB record for most hits in a season with 262 in 2004.</p><p>Suzuki also was one of the best defensive outfielders in the game, stole more than 40 bases in five seasons, including in 2011 when he was 37 years old, and was constantly one of the top MVP candidates in the AL. Ichiro returned to Seattle to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/ichiro-suzuki-announces-his-retirement-from-baseball" rel="noopener">end his career</a>, but his first 10-year stretch with the Mariners was one of the greatest in the history of the league.</p><h2><b>2. Edgar Martinez</b></h2><p>Position: Designated Hitter and Third Base</p><p>Years with Mariners: 1987-2004</p><p>Notable Accolades: Seven-time All-Star, Five-time Silver Slugger, Hall of Famer</p><p>Edgar Martinez was a late bloomer, as he didn’t really find a consistent role with the Mariners until 1990 when he was 27. But once he did, there was no stopping him. Martinez quickly cemented himself as one of the best all-around hitters in the game and put together quite the career at the plate for Seattle primarily as a designated hitter.</p><p>Martinez never won an MVP, but he can awfully close in 1995 when he hit .356 with 29 home runs and 113 runs batted in. Even when he wasn’t hitting, Martinez was always drawing walks, and he had five seasons where he had an OPS above 1.000, which is just absurd. Martinez rightfully earned a spot in the Hall of Fame, and he is easily one of the greatest Mariners players of all time.</p><h2><b>1. Ken Griffey Jr.</b></h2><p>Position: Centerfielder</p><p>Years with Mariners: 1989-1999, 2009-2010</p><p>Notable Accolades: 1997 AL MVP, 10-time AL All-Star, 10-time Gold Glove winner, Seven-time Silver Slugger, Hall of Famer</p><p>Was there any other choice than Ken Griffey Jr.? At the top of his game, Griffey was the most electric player in the game, whether it be his absolute rockets for home runs or his ridiculous defensive plays, there wasn’t a player more fun to watch than “The Kid.”</p><p>He could absolutely mash the baseball while hitting for average as well, and Griffy ended up winning the AL MVP award in 1997 when he hit .304 while hitting 56 home runs and driving in 147 runs.</p><p>Griffey’s destructive overall style of play did sap him of his abilities a bit earlier than expected, although that was the Cincinnati Reds problem more so than the Mariners. Either way, Griffey was simply spectacular during his peak with Seattle, and he easily earns the top spot on the greatest Mariners list.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He studied journalism and communication at UConn.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">MLB</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The Seattle Mariners are in desperate need of an offensive jolt, especially with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-news-mariners-victor-robles-painful-injury-possible-catch-year-giants">the injuries to Victor Robles</a> and Ryan Bliss, and despite having a stacked starting rotation that will get George Kirby back from injury at some point, the organization has not made veteran starter Luis Castillo <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2025/04/13/mlb-free-agents-lance-lynn-vladimir-guerrero/83060198007/" rel="noopener">available in a trade</a>, at least at the moment.</p><p>“The Seattle Mariners desperately need some offensive help after injuries to right fielder Victor Robles and second baseman Ryan Bliss will sideline them for at least three to four months,” Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY wrote. “Yet, one club who offered a young infielder for veteran starter Luis Castillo, was told that Castillo remains off-limits – at least for now.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-luis-castillo-mlb-rumors-offseason-trade">Rumors surrounding a potential trade of Castillo are not new</a>, as there was much speculation that he could be on the move in the offseason. He is the logical trade chip for the Mariners because he is on a five-year, $108 million contract. The Mariners could get some offensive help in a trade involving Castillo along with some financial flexibility. Castillo counts for $21.6 million against the Mariners’ luxury tax payroll for at least through the 2027 season, and there is a vesting option for the 2028 season as well.</p><p>It has been an interesting start to the 2025 season for the Mariners and the rest of the American League West. The Los Angeles Angels have surprised and are off to a 9-5 start so far, while the Texas Rangers are 9-6. The Mariners sit in third at 7-8, but figure to be in the playoff picture for the majority of the season. The Houston Astros sit at 6-8, while the Athletics are in last with a 6-9 record.</p><p>It is still wide open in the American League West, and eventually, the Mariners might have to make a decision with Castillo to jumpstart the lineup this season.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Trailing by five runs entering the eighth inning, the Mariners stunned the Houston Astros with a 7-6 comeback victory to earn their first series win of the 2025 season. Arozarena’s fingerprints were all over it, <a href="https://sports.mynorthwest.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/randy-walk-off-seattle-mariners-over-astros-7-6/1806627" rel="noopener">including a thunderous grand slam</a> and a patient walk-off walk.</p><p>The chaos began in the bottom of the eighth, when three straight Mariners worked walks to load the bases. After two quick outs threatened to waste the opportunity, Arozarena stepped in and unloaded on a Steven Okert pitch, launching it 384 feet at 107.2 mph to left field for a grand slam. In the ninth inning of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/giants-news-willy-adames-hero-epic-giants-home-debut">Sunday’s 5-4 loss to the San Francisco Giants</a>, Robles made a jaw-dropping grab that immediately sparked concern.</p><p>Sprinting into foul territory in right field, he fully extended over the low railing to rob Patrick Bailey of extra bases. Robles crashed into the netting, flipping over the wall, and landed hard — clearly in pain as he clutched his left shoulder. He was carted off the field moments later, his teammates and trainers rushing to his side. In 2024, he hit .328 for Seattle and went 30-for-31 in stolen base attempts, earning a two-year, $9.75 million extension with a club option through 2027. It was a massive rebound for a player whose career had been sidetracked by injuries during his time with the Nationals.</p><p>“He made all that effort,” center fielder Julio Rodríguez said. “But it was at a high cost. I just noticed he was in pain and called the trainers immediately.”</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/giants-news-justin-verlander-special-silver-lining-home-debut-dud">Giants ended up winning on the next pitch</a> — a walk-off single by Wilmer Flores — but it was Robles’ health that lingered long after the final score.</p><p>Giants right fielder Mike Yastrzemski, familiar with the ballpark’s quirky layout, praised the presence of netting where Robles landed. “Who knows what could have happened?” Yastrzemski said. “It’s one of those things where you hope he’s OK. I’ve never seen anything like that.”</p><p>The play could’ve been ruled foul, but Robles made the catch anyway — a testament to his hustle and grit. “That’s not who he is,” Mariners starter Bryan Woo said of the idea of letting the ball drop. “He’s got the respect of everybody in the clubhouse.”</p><p>Seattle now faces tough questions. However, expectations remain high for the ball club thanks to the power within the lineup. Outfielder Randy Arozarena aims for big things this season after giving a warning that may send a shiver down the backs of opposing pitchers.</p><p>Although the 30-year-old outfielder’s batting average is below average to begin the season, his power has been on full display. When asked about his approach at the plate, Randy Arozarena made it clear that his goal is to <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/randy-arozarena-breaks-hitless-stretch-with-homer" rel="noopener">go yard as often as possible</a>, according to Mariners writer Daniel Kramer of MLB.com.</p><p>“I always go up to bat and try to hit that ball as hard as I can,” Arozarena said through an interpreter. “Sometimes the field can play against you, but … it doesn’t matter if you play here or anywhere else, I’m just going up with the same approach no matter where I’m playing.”</p><p>Through 16 at-bats so far this season, Randy Arozarena owns a .188 batting average with a .350 OBP. He’s also recorded two home runs and two RBIs off of his three hits. The veteran outfielder aims to make the 2025 season his fifth consecutive year hitting 20 or more homers.</p><p>The 2021 Rookie of the Year began his career with the Tampa Bay Rays. However, midway through the 2024 season, Arozarena was traded to the Mariners. Seattle sent two top prospects, outfielder Aidan Smith and right-handed pitcher Brody Hopkins, back to the Rays for the slugger. Playing in 54 games with Seattle, Randy Arozarena recorded a .231 batting average and a .356 OBP while hitting five home runs and 23 RBIs in 2024.</p><p>Arozarena and the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/betting/tigers-mariners-prediction-odds-pick-4-1-2025">Mariners hope to get back in the win column</a> on Tuesday night when they take on the Detroit Tigers. That does not mean there is not something to talk about, however, as a prediction has been made for Ichiro Suzuki to rejoin the team, despite being 51 years old.</p><p>The Athletic <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6231805/2025/03/27/mlb-opening-day-bold-predictions-2025/?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=mlbtw&amp;source=mlbtw" rel="noopener">made a bold prediction for each</a> MLB team ahead of the 2025 season. That was the one made for the Mariners, via Tyler Kepner.</p><p>“Ichiro Suzuki becomes the first player in history to use his Hall of Fame speech to announce his comeback as an active player,” Kepner wrote. “The Mariners add him to the roster and surge to the AL West title.”</p><p>Ichiro has not appeared in an MLB game since retiring as a member of the Mariners following two games they played in Japan to open the 2019 season.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mariners-news-ichiro-suzuki-tears-mariners-jersey-retirement-announcement">Mariners are scheduled to retire Ichiro’s jersey number</a> this season, but the chances of seeing him take the field for Seattle, or any MLB team for that matter, are not particularly high.</p><p>Anything is possible, however. It is not inconceivable that Ichiro simply does not know what else to do with himself and wants to return to the diamond as a result.</p><h2><b>Cal Raleigh believes Mariners can win World Series</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/unnamed-2_159c4b.jpg"><figcaption>Steven Bisig-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>After the Mariners signed catcher Cal Raleigh to a contract extension worth $105 million, he knows what he wants his next accomplishment to be.</p><p>Raleigh believes it is possible for the Mariners to <a href="https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/mariners/why-cal-raleigh-believes-mariners-can-bring-world-series-to-seattle/" rel="noopener">bring home baseball’s most prestigious crown</a>.</p><p>“This place has always felt like home since I arrived here in Seattle. They took me in from day one with kindness and respect and it is one of the top places to play in professional sports,” Raleigh said via the Seattle Times.</p><p>“I wanted to stay here because of the connection with the people of the Pacific Northwest and the Seattle Mariners, but I know it doesn’t always work out the way you want it to. I feel blessed that the Mariners gave me this opportunity and I can’t think of a better place in MLB to call home. We have a great nucleus of players here and aren’t far off from bringing the World Series to Seattle.”</p><p>Raleigh knows the process will not be an easy one, but he is committed to doing whatever it takes to get the job done.</p><p>“It won’t be easy but I believe ownership and management share the same vision and commitment,” Raleigh said. “I won’t stop working and I won’t stop grinding until this city gets what it deserves, and that is a perennial playoff team and a World Series Championship.”</p><p>The World Series Raleigh wants to bring would be the first in franchise history for the Mariners.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He is also a professor of sociology.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">MLB</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Four days after being <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-news-seattle-ex-all-star-owed-15-5-million-2025">cut by the Seattle Mariners</a>, all-star relief pitcher Drew Pomeranz was <a href="https://x.com/JonHeyman/status/1905304237359128655" rel="noopener">re-signed to a minor league contract</a>, per baseball columnist Jon Heyman.</p><p>This comes as the Mariners begin their season against the Athletics on Thursday.</p><p>In the offseason, Pomeranz and the Mariners agreed to a minor league deal, but he requested to be released after not making the Opening Day roster. He has been in the league since 2011 and made the All-Star Game in 2016.</p><p>Pomeranz hasn’t pitched in a major league game since 2021 due to a string of injuries.</p><p>He has shown promise in spring training with 10 strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings pitched in the Cactus League.</p><p>Pomeranz had previously pitched for the Colorado Rockies, San Diego Padres, Boston Red Sox, San Francisco Giants, Milwaukee Brewers, and Los Angeles Angels. In 2024, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-angels/angels-news-la-contract-all-star-drew-pomeranz">Pomeranz signed a minor league deal with the Angels</a> with the hope that he would become an asset in their bullpen.</p><p>Injuries have beset him and left him toiling in the league.</p><h2><b>What Drew Pomeranz can bring to Mariners</b></h2><p>Pomeranz comes with plenty of risks in terms of his health, and being 36 years old.</p><p>However, he does possess over a decade of experience. He could provide the type of relief the Mariners needed to offset their two other lefty relievers, Tayler Saucedo and Gabe Speier, in case they get injured.</p><p>That is, of course, if he remains healthy. If Pomeranz can stay healthy, he has shown that he could get solid innings under his belt, throwing a four-steam fastball between 90-94 mph. He can also get his knuckle curveball up to 82 mph.</p><p>Pomeranz currently has a record of 48-58 with a 3.91 ERA.</p><p>He is expected to report to Triple-A Tacoma, whose season begins on Friday.</p><p>If he can prove himself in Tacoma, Pomeranz could find his way back up to Seattle. They <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-news-105-million-contract-extension-star-catcher">signed catcher Cal Raleigh to a six-year extension worth $105 million</a>. He was rewarded for his great defensive catching while being one of Seattle’s best hitters. Mariners president Jerry DiPoto <a href="https://marinersblog.mlblogs.com/mariners-extend-cal-raleigh-to-six-year-contract-through-2030-with-vesting-player-option-for-2031-e2045c63b685" rel="noopener">released a statement</a> about Raleigh in the official announcement.</p><p>“Cal is central to so much of what we do as a team,” Dipoto said. “His leadership on the field, combined with elite defense and impact offense, is rare among catchers in the game. We are fortunate that he’s a Mariner and thrilled that he’s here for the long haul.”</p><p>The extension buys out Raleigh’s final two years of arbitration and four years of free agency. When it expires, he will be 35 years old. The Mariners’ park is the hardest to hit in across baseball, but Raleigh has figured it out in his five-year MLB career. He led the team with 34 homers and 100 RBIs, 11 and 38 of which came at home in 2024.</p><p>The Mariners’ big issue last year was offense. Raleigh was the only player with over 70 RBIs and they had the second-lowest team batting average in the league. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-gm-knows-hell-get-roasted-after-breaking-silence-on-do-nothing-offseason">Seattle did not do much to help itself in the offseason</a>, so Raleigh will have to step up.</p><h2><b>The Mariners have the pitching and need the offense</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Cal-Raleigh-with-Seattle-Mariners.jpg"><figcaption>Steven Bisig-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Reports and rumors have been swirling about what exactly is going on in Seattle’s home park. Whether the batter’s eye is crooked or not, Raleigh is not having any issues. Plus, he is leading one of the best rotations in the league that should be back in that category this season on defense.</p><p>The Mariners have talented players around Raleigh, like Julio Rodriguez and Randy Arozarena. But they need to see the best of those players this season to make the playoffs. The Houston Astros will still challenge for the division title and the Texas Rangers’ World Series hangover should be over. Seattle has to step up to compete this season.</p><p>Last year, the Mariners got off to an excellent start and then blew a ten-game division lead faster than any team in history. This year, they need to get off to a solid start and hold the line to reward the significant investment in this core. Otherwise, there could be significant changes.</p><p>The Mariners host the Athletics on Opening Day on Thursday. While a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-rumors-insider-577-million-vladimir-guerrero-jr-prediction">megadeal is still on the table</a>, as the two sides seem motivated to get a deal done, the Blue Jays can’t afford to lose him for nothing. With Logan Gilbert, Luis Castillo, Bryce Miller, Bryan Woo, Emerson Hancock, and George Kirby, Seattle has arguably the deepest rotation in the MLB. They desperately need an impact bat, and they can land one in the form of Guerrero without even sacrificing their pitching depth.</p><p>The Mariners have one of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/top-10-mlb-farm-systems-ahead-of-2025-season">best farm systems in the MLB</a>. They have seven players in MLB.com’s <a href="https://www.mlb.com/milb/prospects" rel="noopener">top 100 prospects list</a>, which is tied for the most in the league. It will certainly take some big-name prospects to get a deal done for a player of Guerrero’s caliber, but losing minor leaguers such as Lazaro Montes and Cole Young would be well worth it for Seattle.</p><p>Guerrero is coming off of his best season since 2021, but it didn’t prevent Blue Jays from finishing last in the American League East. Last year, the first baseman hit 30 home runs while still maintaining a .323 batting average. He is clearly one of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/ranking-50-best-mlb-players-2025-season">best players in baseball,</a> and because he is still only 26 years old, he may not have even reached his fullest potential yet. Guerrero’s best season came at age 22, when he belted 48 home runs.</p><p>Guerrero would take Luke Raley’s spot in this trade. Raley is a solid player, but Guerrero would be a massive upgrade over him, as he’d be the offensive star that the team desperately needs. This move would follow an <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/grading-mariners-rays-blockbuster-randy-arozarena-trade">MLB trade deadline deal last season for Randy Arozarena,</a> and it may finally get the Mariners over the hump.</p><h2><b>Blue Jays can’t risk losing Vladimir Guerrero Jr. for nothing</b></h2><p>Trading Guerrero away would not be an easy choice for the Blue Jays, but it might become a necessary one sooner rather than later. The AL East is stacked, and even after a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/mlb-rumors-blue-jays-anthony-santander-4-year-82-million-contract-offer">free agent move for Anthony Santander</a>, the team could still finish last in their division. In that case, a franchise reset and complete rebuild would be more than necessary.</p><p>There would be no better way to kick off a rebuild than to dangle one of the best trade chips in baseball. Guerrero would demand a huge trade haul because he is not only talented but because he is still so young. The Blue Jays don’t seem to be willing to pay the price Guerrero is requesting in contract talks, and they can’t afford to lose him for nothing.</p><p>The Blue Jays could stay afloat with the addition of Raley in this hypothetical trade while also retooling for the future with three of the Mariners’ best prospects. Toronto certainly shouldn’t give Guerrero away for cheap, but if someone like the Mariners comes knocking with a huge trade offer, then the Blue Jays should strongly consider taking it.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

After a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/3-offseason-moves-mariners-make-missing-playoffs">historic collapse in 2024, they need better offense to power through a crowded American League Wild Card</a> race. But an injury to a long-time Seattle stalwart forced a roster move few saw coming. The Mariners cut Mitch Haniger before Opening Day, <a href="https://x.com/RyanDivish/status/1903858611912094151" rel="noopener">ending his second stint</a> with the team. Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times broke the news Sunday.</p><p>“The Mariners have released Mitch Haniger,” Divish wrote in a social media post. “The veteran outfielder/designated hitter hasn’t played since the first week of [March] due to left shoulder soreness. They owe him $15.5 million for this season.”</p><p>Haniger joined the Mariners in 2017 at 26 years old and immediately made an impact. In his first three seasons in the Pacific Northwest, he racked up 57 homers and 172 RBIs while posting a 129 OPS+. He opted out of the 2020 season and had his first 100 RBI season in 2021. But it has been downhill since, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mariners-news-mitch-hanigers-heartfelt-message-to-seattle-after-signing-with-giants">including a one-year stint with the San Francisco Giants</a> where he only played 61 games.</p><p>With poor numbers and lingering injuries on his resume, the Mariners cut Haniger. They have to pay him $15.5 million this year but the relationship is over. He is now a free agent and can sign anywhere.</p><p>The Mariners <a href="https://x.com/JonHeyman/status/1903895749068231145" rel="noopener">also cut a pitcher</a> on Sunday. Drew Pomeranz has not played in the majors since 2021 but joined the Mariners for spring training. New York Post insider Jon Heyman posted, “Drew Pomeranz has been granted his release by Mariners and is available for teams needing LH reliever. 10 K in 7 2/3 IP this spring. Fastball sat 91-94 with 92.0 avg.”</p><p>Even though the Mariners needed help this offseason, they did not add much. Their trade deadline acquisition Randy Arozarena must step up and help lift the offense to a playoff level.
