However, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/1-will-smith-stat-proves-dodgers-catcher-is-underrated">Smith has emerged as the team’s unsung hero</a> with an excellent year at the plate. He has grown from a supporting piece to an All-Star level talent crucial to the team’s success. Getting him back on the field and in rhythm before the playoffs could play a role in determining just how far the team can go this season.</p><p>According to The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya, Smith <a href="https://x.com/FabianArdaya/status/1966659456697016735" rel="noopener">could return to the field</a> as early as Friday night.</p><p>“Will Smith is not in the lineup, but is available off the bench tonight, Dave Roberts said. MRI came back clean and swelling is down, but they want to be mindful to avoid a situation where he was scratched like Wednesday night,” Ardaya said.</p><p>Roberts and the Dodgers have been cautious with injuries throughout the season. However, the team is running out of time to keep Smith out of the batting order. Los Angeles’ playoff fate is up in the air over the next two weeks with multiple important series. While it seemed like maybe, just maybe, the Dodgers would be able to count on Smith consistently moving forward, at least until Rushing returns as a consistent reserve, Wednesday night proved that, unfortunately, that might not be the case.</p><p>With Smith out once more, the Dodgers will turn to Rortvedt, who joined LA as part of the Hunter Feduccia trade alongside Paul Gervase and Adam Serwinowski. Though Rortvedt has only appeared in 31 games so far this season, six of those came in Los Angeles, with the team recording a <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.fcgi?id=rortvbe01&amp;t=b&amp;year=2025" rel="noopener">2-3 record</a> in games he’s appeared in. </p><p>Will Rortvedt even up his record in a Dodgers uniform at 3-3 with a sweep of the Rockies? Considering everything the two-time World Series champion does for this club, at the plate and behind it, a lingering injury could spell trouble for the Dodgers.</p><h2><b>Will Smith gives the Dodgers’ lineup great length</b></h2><p>Despite batting .159 with a .304 slugging percentage last month, Smith is still in position to have the best campaign of his seven-year MLB career. He is slashing .296/.405/.497/.902 through 109 games and is forcing fans to hesitate before they refer to the big three at the top of the Dodgers’ lineup. Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman remain game-changers, and Mookie Betts is trying to find his groove offensively, but Smith is the type of player who could push Los Angeles over the top in the playoffs.</p><p>This injury news could severely diminish his bat-to-ball skills. Overcoming a bone bruise in the dominant hand figures to be an arduous challenge. The 30-year-old is tough, though, and is clearly committed to this franchise. Perhaps his perseverance can motivate the rest of the clubhouse.
