On Tuesday, the Padres bounced back from a Game 1 loss and took Game 2 to force the rubber match. During the game, Friars’ shortstop Xander Bogaerts ran home on a grounder to third and was called out at the plate. As he was sliding, he seemed to have injured his shoulder. You could see signs of pain when he didn’t get up immediately.</p><p>The Padres tried to give him a go on Wednesday, but <a href="https://x.com/padres/status/1937936980803018868?s=46" rel="noopener">he was scratched from the lineup</a>. Tyler Wade has taken his place in the lineup to play second base while Jose Iglesias shifts over to shortstop.</p><p>This is a big loss for the Padres. The hope is that he does not need an IL stint, but he has had shoulder issues in the past. The shortstop has been on fire the last week as he reached base nine straight times while also playing very good defense. It was a rough start to the season for Bogaerts, and he was catching fire as summer started. However, the hot streak will be put on hold for now as he will take today and Thursday off before potentially returning to the lineup for the series against the Cincinnati Reds on Friday. The Reds are hot, so the Padres will need Xander Bogaerts to be in the lineup.</p><p>Bogaerts is hitting .246 with four homers, 29 RBIs, and an OPS of just .668. Those numbers are low, but he just had 11 hits in a five-game span.</p><p>The Friars are 43-36 on the season. They are 5.5 games back of the Los Angeles Dodgers for first place in the NL West. The San Francisco Giants are 4.5 games back, and the Arizona Diamondbacks are 7.5 games back. But the Giants are surely going to benefit from Devers’ arrival as he joins the heart of their lineup.</p><p>Xander Bogaerts, who played with Devers as a member of the Red Sox, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6433471/2025/06/18/rafael-devers-al-east-nl-west/" rel="noopener">reacted to the news</a> as the San Diego Padres’ NL West rivals just got a lot better offensively.</p><p>Via The Athletic:</p><p>“I ain’t a pitcher, so I don’t have to deal with it,” Bogaerts said. “But man, that’s a bat. That’s a powerful bat.”</p><p>Bogaerts saw firsthand just how talented Rafael Devers really is. While there was drama surrounding the superstar this season due to Alex Bregman taking his position at third base, there’s no questioning Devers’ ability with the bat in his hands.</p><p>The slugger is hitting .274 with 15 home runs and 59 RBIs so far in 2025, and he started his Giants tenure in the best way possible on Tuesday night, going 2 for 5 with a double and an RBI.</p><p>Manny Machado, Bogaerts’ teammate on the Padres, loves the addition to the division as it will create more competition for San Diego:</p><p>“Good competition,” Machado said. “It’s gonna be till the end. It’s what we play for. It’s definitely gonna be fun. This division just got better. It was good already and great already. So, it just got better. It’s gonna be a fun ride.”</p><p>The Giants didn’t give up any major pieces to get Rafael Devers, either. It cost them two starters and two minor league prospects. The Padres’ post-All-Star Game stretch helped them secure the top Wild Card berth in the National League and the team reached the NLCS, where they suffered a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-news-manny-machado-gets-100-real-heartbreaking-loss-dodgers">heartbreaking loss to the Dodgers</a>.</p><p>San Diego is gearing up to make another run in the highly competitive NL West. And Padres’ star third baseman Manny Machado believes Xander Bogaerts will <a href="https://x.com/SammyLev/status/1903241230064197840" rel="noopener">be a key</a> to the team’s success in 2025.</p><p>“We’re definitely gonna need him… Right when he was getting hot and getting a feel for it and starting to feel himself at the plate, obviously [he had] an injury,” Machado said of Bogaerts, per 973TheFanSD’s Sammy Levitt on X.</p><p>After spending the vast majority of his 12-year career at shortstop, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-news-xander-bogaerts-breaks-silence-second-base-move">Bogaerts made the switch to second base</a> last season to accommodate Gold Glove winner Ha-Seong Kim. Bogaerts then fractured his shoulder making a diving stop at second. He’s a guy that can do a lot of things. He can run the bases, steal some bases, hit for power, he can slug. He led the league one year in doubles. So that’s the type of player we’re going to see. We’re going to see him physically ready this year. He’s looking like a little young Bogie out there running around at shortstop. So it’s fun to see him be out there and healthy again and being himself,” Machado added, via Levitt.</p><p>Bogaerts spent the first 10-years of his MLB career with the Boston Red Sox.
