The Reds offer him the chance to transform their young lineup and play for one of the game’s most respected managers, Terry Francona. They have to do something to solidify this core before serious trade conversations about Elly De La Cruz start picking up.</p><p>Schwarber is perfect for the Reds and Great American Ballpark. It is one of the most hitter-friendly parks in baseball, perfect for a slugger like Schwarber. But Cincy does not have that type of player on the team yet. Their designated hitter spot is open, so long as Sal Stewart can play first base defensively. That should lead to Schwarber landing in Cincy.</p><p>Another designated hitter available in free agency is Luis Arraez. He is a contact machine and could lead to RBI opportunities for the young players. Cincinnati is making a bunch of moves in free agency, to reshuffle the roster. Cincinnati <a href="https://x.com/JonHeyman/status/1991984819715314011" rel="noopener">is keeping relief pitcher</a> Sam Moll, per the New York Post.</p><p>Moll pitched for the club in 2025, posting a 6.38 ERA. He appeared in 23 games. <a href="https://x.com/Feinsand/status/1991998713171198088" rel="noopener">The veteran has appeared</a> in more than 200 career Major League Baseball games.</p><p>“Sam Moll gets $875,000 plus $150,000 in incentives from the Reds, per source,” MLB.com reporter Mark Feinsand posted to X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>The Reds <a href="https://x.com/Feinsand/status/1991991341065355651" rel="noopener">made some other moves</a> to free up roster space.</p><p>“The Reds are non-tendering Carson Spiers, Roddery Munoz and Will Banfield, per source,” Feinsand added in a separate post.</p><p>Cincinnati reached the Major League Baseball Playoffs this season, after the New York Mets stumbled at the end of the campaign. The Reds made a National League Wild Card Series, before losing to the eventual World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers.</p><p>Cincinnati finished the regular season in third place in the National League Central division. The Reds won 83 regular season games, but trailed the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs.</p><h2><b>Terry Francona is turning around the Reds</b></h2><p>The 2025 season was Cincinnati’s first with Terry Francona as manager. Francona is a veteran skipper who won two World Series titles while managing the Boston Red Sox.</p><p>Cincinnati is working to add more depth to the team, with Francona at the helm. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/cincinnati-reds/reds-rumors-hunter-greene-could-traded-find-offense">Reds have an ace in starting pitcher Hunter Greene</a>, who has been involved in trade speculation. Greene <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/46999006/mlb-2025-26-offseason-passan-predictions-free-agency-kyle-tucker-schwarber-alex-bregman" rel="noopener">appears to be staying put</a> for now.</p><p>“A minuscule chance he moves. Not quite (Paul) Skenes, but pretty close,” ESPN’s Jeff Passan wrote in his offseason preview.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/cincinnati-reds/reds-rumors-kyle-schwarber-keeping-options-open-playing-hometown-team">Reds are expected to look for offense</a> this offseason. A player in the mix is free agent Pete Alonso, who may also re-sign with the New York Mets. Kyle Schwarber is also a possible addition, as the slugger is another free agent.</p><p>Time will tell if the Reds can have a successful 2026 season. However, the fact he was battling through a series injury makes his performance even more admirable.</p><p>President of baseball operations confirmed that De La Cruz <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/elly-de-la-cruz-played-with-quad-injury-for-part-of-2025-season" rel="noopener">played with a left squad strain</a> throughout the 2025 campaign. While there was a partial tear, the Reds weren’t forced to sideline De La Cruz. And as the superstar begins his offseason, he is already been rehabbing the injury, via Manny Randhawa and Mark Shelton of MLB.com.</p><p>“If you look at his year last year — and I think a lot of people don’t know this — at the end of the year, like toward the end of July, he was dealing with a partial torn quad,” Krall said. “And he has been rehabbing — he was at the ballpark today — he’s been rehabbing this whole offseason.”</p><p>Even with his injury, De La Cruz still managed to hit .264 with 22 home runs, 86 RBIs and 37 stolen bases. It may not have been the career-high 25 home runs and league-leading 67 stolen bags from a year prior, but no team will complain about that type of production.</p><p>Under team control through the 2029 season, De La Cruz will be a key piece of any success Cincinnati finds until then. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/cincinnati-reds/reds-rumors-kyle-schwarber-keeping-options-open-playing-hometown-team">Reds are already considering adding some extra firepower alongside him</a>. They know a player of his caliber doesn’t come around often.</p><p>At the same time, Cincinnati wants De La Cruz to enter the 2026 season healthy. The fact he is already rehabbing should be a good sign. While he was able to play through it in 2025, the Reds want De La Cruz to play without limitations in his next campaign.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

That might be a difficult proposition for a Reds team that has the third-lowest payroll at just over $40 million. If they were going to splurge on a player, the fact Schwarber is from Ohio should only help the franchise’s willingness.</p><p>The DH’s numbers speak for himself, as Schwarber is coming off of a runner-up finish for NL MVP. He hit .240 with 56 home runs and a major league-leading 132 RBIs. Schwarber will be a major addition in whichever lineup he ends up in.</p><p>If the Reds are willing to open up the checkbook, perhaps he’ll be donning a Cincinnati jersey come 2026. As <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-mets/mets-news-juan-soto-sends-powerful-message-pete-alonso-mlb-free-agency">Alonso heads into free agency after being with the Mets</a>, there are a few teams that have been listed that could be top destinations.</p><p>In the latest column from MLB insider Jeff Passan of ESPN, he mentions the Boston Red Sox, the Cincinnati Reds, and the Baltimore Orioles as teams that could fit Alonso. Though Passan does not rule out the possibility of <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/46999006/mlb-2025-26-offseason-passan-predictions-free-agency-kyle-tucker-schwarber-alex-bregman" rel="noopener">returning with his original team</a> in New York.</p><p>“Alonso’s willingness to play designated hitter offers the sorts of avenues a first-base-only mindset wouldn’t,” Passan wrote. “He could stay with the Mets, move up to Boston, bring Cincinnati the big bat it desperately needs or, if Ryan Mountcastle is traded or nontendered, split the first-base and DH jobs in Baltimore with rookie Samuel Basallo, who will also spend plenty of time at catcher.”</p><p>Looking specifically into Boston, Bob Nightengale of USA Today would have a similar inkling, even going as far as to say that other general managers in MLB are “predicting the perfect landing spot” for Alonso being the Red Sox.</p><h2><b>Despite other teams, the Mets are still the prime spot for Pete Alonso</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Pete-Alonso.jpg"><figcaption>Jim Rassol-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>While the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-mets/mets-rumors-new-yorks-pete-alonso-meeting-went-well-but-orioles-twist">rumors around the Mets and Alonso will continue</a> throughout the winter until a deal is signed anywhere, there is also a strong prediction from many in the baseball world that he should stay in the Big Apple. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com would be one who says that Alondo is a<a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/free-agents-each-mlb-team-could-re-sign-for-2026?affiliateId=mlbapp-ios_webview_news-index&amp;rsid=mlbios.at.bat.new.implementation" rel="noopener"> “natura fit”</a> in New York’s lineup, as last season, he hit a .272 batting average to go along with 38 home runs and 126 RBIs.</p><p>“Alonso and the Mets are back in familiar territory, as the slugger returns to the open market after opting out of the final year of his contract,” Feinsand wrote. “The club’s all-time home run leader, Alonso is a natural fit in the Mets’ lineup, though his return might depend on the length of contract he’s seeking this time around. For all the adversity he faced in 2025, Williams has nonetheless managed to draw attention <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6801354/2025/11/12/mlb-free-agents-devin-williams/" rel="noopener">from roughly a dozen teams</a>, including the Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox, and Cincinnati Reds, according to The Athletic’s Will Sammon.</p><p>The 31-year-old faced a challenging season in New York following his trade from the Milwaukee Brewers. He finished with a 4.79 ERA over 62 innings with 18 saves, a significant decline from his high-caliber Milwaukee years. During his six seasons with the Brewers, Williams was among baseball’s best relievers, compiling a 1.83 ERA, striking out 375 batters, and averaging three consecutive sub-2.00 ERA campaigns from 2022 to 2024. His signature changeup, nicknamed the “Airbender,” contributed to a 34.7% strikeout rate and nearly 17% swinging-strike rate in 2025.</p><p>T<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-fans-cant-believe-game-7-world-series-comeback">he Dodgers, coming off back-to-back World Series titles</a>, are interested in Williams as a high-leverage right-handed option. Los Angeles relied on converted starters Emmet Sheehan and Roki Sasaki in late-inning relief during the postseason, while expecting veterans like Tanner Scott, Alex Vesia, Evan Phillips, Brusdar Graterol, and Brock Stewart to return from injury. Williams’ ability to generate strikeouts and his improved matchup in pitcher-friendly Dodger Stadium make him an appealing reclamation project for the reigning champions.</p><p>The Red Sox have Williams on their radar, although Aroldis Chapman will continue to close. Boston has a history of investing in multi-year bullpen contracts, such as Kenley Jansen’s two-year, $32 million deal and Chapman’s recent eight-figure extensions. Well, you've come to the right place.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Cincinnati Reds</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>After watching the news that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/cleveland-guardians/guardians-news-emmanuel-clases-lawyer-issues-strong-statement-pitchers-indictment">Cleveland Guardians pitchers Luis Ortiz and Emmanuel Clase</a> were accused of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/cleveland-guardians/guardians-news-emmanuel-clase-luis-ortiz-indicted-charges-related-mlb-betting-scheme">betting on their individual pitches</a> during games take the sports world by storm, MLB and sportsbooks are coming together to make moves to severely limit the chances of it happening again.</p><p>Taking to social media to announce the new policy, worked out by the two parties, ESPN’s David Payne Purdum broke down the new limits on individual pitch betting, which should, in theory, <a href="https://x.com/DavidPurdum/status/1987983452067824002" rel="noopener">disincentivize the bet for active players</a>.</p><p>“Prominent U.S. sportsbooks are establishing a nationwide $200 betting limit on baseball wagers centered on individual pitches and prohibiting such bets from being included in parlays in an attempt to decrease the incentive for manipulation, MLB announced Monday,” Purdum wrote.</p><p>Rob Manfred, the commissioner of MLB, commented on the decision, noting that he applauded the sports gambling industry for attempting to discourage players from making bets on their own pitches, as the <a href="https://x.com/DavidPurdum/status/1987983854741975462?s=20" rel="noopener">financial reward should no longer be worth the risk</a>.</p><p>“I commend the industry for working with us to take action on a national solution to address the risks posed by these pitch-level markets, which are particularly vulnerable to integrity concerns,” Rob Manfred said via Purdum.</p><p>Will this ultimately curb sports betting among active players? Considering the salaries currently being handed out by MLB teams, maybe so. As the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/reds-rumors-1-reason-cincinnati-shop-hunter-greene-trade-talks-huge-mistake-warning">Reds begin crafting their 2026 plans</a>, Cincinnati has already made a major league addition.</p><p>The Reds <a href="https://x.com/Reds/status/1985770274688565705" rel="noopener">have signed</a> relief pitcher Keegan Thompson to a one-year contract, the team announced. Financial details have not yet been released.</p><p>Thompson spent the 2025 season pitching at the Triple-A level for the Chicago Cubs. Over 33 appearances, the right-hander held a 4.50 ERA and an 83/25 K/BB ratio. The Cubs didn’t recall his services, however, Thompson caught the eye of an NL Central rival in the Reds.</p><p>Helping his cause was Thompson’s performance in 2024. Over 24 major league games with the Cubs, the righty held a 2.67 ERA and a 36/18 K/BB ratio. Over his entire four-year MLB career, Thompson has registered a 3.64 ERA and 225/111 K/BB ratio.</p><p>Cincinnati finished the 2025 season with the 14th-best bullpen ERA at 3.89. They watched Tony Santillan break onto the scene with 80 appearances, a 2.44 ERA and a 75/29 K/BB ratio. Graham Ashcraft will be another key reliever after posting a 3.99 ERA and a 64/25 K/BB ratio. As the Reds navigate their offseason, their bullpen is sure to go through plenty of changes.</p><p>For now, Cincinnati wants to see what they have in Thompson. He has shown considerable potential during his time in the majors. But the fact he spent all of 2025 in Triple-A is telling. While he signed a major league deal, spring training will be a crucial time for Thompson to see if he can stick.</p><p>While the Reds made the playoffs, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/cincinnati-reds/reds-news-terry-francona-harsh-reality-abrupt-playoff-exit">they were quickly ousted in the Wild Card round</a>. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-fans-cant-believe-game-7-world-series-comeback">Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays put on an absolute show,</a> which included multiple extra-inning thrillers, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-shohei-ohtani-pulls-off-world-series-feat-baseball-hasnt-seen-1934">numerous broken records,</a> and a bunch of iconic moments and performances. This was the 121st iteration of the Fall Classic, though, so there is plenty of competition. So, what are the best World Series matchups ever?</p><h2><b>10. 2017: Houston Astros vs. Los Angeles Dodgers</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/George-Springer-2017.jpg"><figcaption>Troy Taormina-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Ranking the 2017 World Series is not an easy task. At the time, the Houston Astros vs. Los Angeles Dodgers battle was considered a classic, but the shadow of the Astros’ <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/3515560/2022/08/24/astros-cheating-scandal-timeline/" rel="noopener">cheating scandal</a> looms over Houston’s win. During the 2017 and 2018 seasons, the Astros illegally stole signs, and that surely contributed to their 2017 title.</p><p>Even so, this series was phenomenal. Clayton Kershaw was unstoppable in Game 1, and Game 2 was a back-and-fourth affair. The Dodgers had a five-run ninth inning to win Game 4, and Game 5 was one of the craziest World Series games ever. In that game, the two teams combined for 25 runs over 10 innings. The Astros won 13-12 in a game in which each team had three innings with three-plus runs. In the end, after seven games, the Astros won their first title, and George Springer tied the World Series record with five home runs.</p><h2><b>9. 1972: Oakland Athletics vs. Cincinnati Reds</b></h2><p>In 1972, six World Series games were decided by just one run, both the Oakland Athletics and Cincinnati Reds had a .209 batting average, and both teams slugged .295. This World Series was just about as close as it gets. Rollie Fingers pitched in each of the six close games, and Gene Tenace belted four home runs, leading to the first of three straight championships for the A’s.</p><h2><b>8. 1924: Washington Senators vs. New York Giants</b></h2><p>Game 7 of the 1924 World Series between the Washington Senators and New York Giants is considered by many to be the best game in baseball history. Curly Ogden was only started as a decoy, but George Mogridge and Walter Johnson did most of the work on the bump for Washington.</p><p>The game was highlighted by both teams continuously stranding base runners until the 12th inning, when two Giants’ errors allowed the Senators to be crowned as champions. There was much more to the series than just the closeout game, though, as four of the seven games were decided by just one run.</p><h2><b>7. 2025: Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Toronto Blue Jays </b></h2><p>Perhaps there is some recency bias here, as the 2025 World Series wasn’t close every single game in the seven-game series, but both Game 3 and Game 7 were the stuff of legend. Game 3 tied the record for the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/longest-world-series-games-ever-dodgers-blue-jays-18-inning-clash">longest game in World Series history,</a> as it wasn’t concluded until Freddie Freeman hit a game-winning home run in the 18th inning for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Shohei Ohtani also cemented a claim as one of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/updating-and-ranking-the-50-greatest-mlb-players-of-all-time">best MLB players ever</a> by getting <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-hilarious-shohei-ohtani-moment-world-series-game-3-viral">on base a record nine times</a> in that game.</p><p>Game 7 also went to extra innings. Miguel Rojas, Will Smith, and Yoshinobu Yamamoto played hero in that game. Rojas had a game-tying home run and game-saving throw home in the ninth inning, and Smith hit the 11th-inning go-ahead homer. Yamamoto closed out the series on the bump and ended up with three series wins, becoming just the second player in World Series history to do that. Yamamoto even had a complete game in Game 2. His <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-yoshinobu-yamamoto-said-winning-world-series-mvp">heroics resulted in an MVP</a> and the Dodgers becoming the first repeat champions since 2000.</p><p>The Toronto Blue Jays deserve plenty of credit, too. Addison Barger hit the first pinch-hit grand slam in World Series history, and Ernie Clement stayed hot to break the postseason record for hits with 30.</p><h2><b>6. 2016: Chicago Cubs vs. Cleveland Indians</b></h2><p>One of the two largest World Series droughts ever was going to end in 2016. The Chicago Cubs hadn’t won the Fall Classic since 1908, and the Cleveland Indians were championshipless since 1948. The two teams put on an absolute show to try to end their respective curses.</p><p>Game 7 was arguably the best closeout game in MLB history. Dexter Fowler hit a lead-off home run, and the Cubs were able to go up 5-1. The Indians clawed back, but their comeback attempt was thwarted by a rain delay that allowed Chicago to regroup. The Curse of the Billy Goat ending after 108 years was iconic enough, but the fashion in which it happened made the World Series as a whole a spectacular one.</p><h2><b>5. 2011: St. Louis Cardinals vs. Texas Rangers</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/David-Freese-2011.jpg"><figcaption>Jeff Curry-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Game 7 of the 2011 World Series wasn’t a nail-biter, but the rest of the series was madness and warrants a spot inside the top five for the greatest World Series matchups ever. Game 6 was the standout battle. The St. Louis Cardinals erased a two-run deficit in the ninth inning and again in the 10th inning. David Freese was the hero who hit the game-winning home run, and he was rewarded with MVP honors.</p><p>Albert Pujols also had a three-home run performance in Game 3, in which the Cardinals scored 16 runs, and there was even bullpen phone call drama. This was the Texas Rangers’ second straight World Series loss, making it all the more brutal for the team.</p><h2><b>4. 2001: Arizona Diamondbacks vs. New York Yankees</b></h2><p>The New York Yankees four-peated from 1936 to 1939. They also five-peated from 1949 to 1953. The Oakland Athletics have a three-peat to their name, too, and the Yankees three-peated for the third time from 1998 to 2000 to become the final team with back-to-back-to-back championship victories.</p><p>They nearly won the World Series again in 2001, but the Arizona Diamondbacks and Randy Johnson stopped that from happening. The Diamondbacks outscored the Yankees 37-14 in the series, but after the New York devastation that was 9/11, the Yankees seemed to have a little magic. They won Games 3, 4, and 5 by one run, and Derek Jeter hit the home run that earned him the Mr. November title.</p><p>In Game 7, the Yankees had a lead and sent the best closer in MLB history to the bump in the ninth inning. Mariano Rivera had a 0.70 career postseason ERA, but Luis Gonzalez hit a flare just over the infield to win the game and the World Series title.</p><h2><b>3. 1986: New York Mets vs. Boston Red Sox</b></h2><p>The Red Sox <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/blue-jays-loss-dodgers-ranks-among-most-heartbreaking-world-series-defeats-ever">lost a World Series in unfortunate fashion</a> just over a decade before their 1986 World Series clash against the New York Mets, but more on that later. In 1986, the most famous error in baseball history occurred in Game 6 when Mookie Wilson hit a soft grounder up the first base path to Bill Buckner in the 10th inning.</p><p>The ball went under the Red Sox first baseman’s glove, allowing Ray Knight to score the winning run. The game-winning run was the third of three runs the team scored in the final frame, making it one of the best comebacks ever. Buckner would seek redemption in Game 7 with two hits, but it wasn’t enough to overcome his Game 6 screw up.</p><h2><b>2. 1991: Minnesota Twins vs. Atlanta Braves</b></h2><p>Not one, not two, but three games went to extra innings in the 1991 World Series between the Minnesota Twins and Atlanta Braves. Jack Morris pitched all 10 innings in Game 7 to give the Twins the win, and he did it without giving up a single run.</p><p>There was also Kirby Puckett’s walk-off in Game 6 and Mark Lemke’s three triples. This series was all the more special because nobody saw it coming. Both teams finished in last place in their respective divisions the year prior before making epic runs to the Fall Classic that culminated in one of the best World Series matchups ever.</p><h2><b>1. 1975: Cincinnati Reds vs. Boston Red Sox</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/1975-Reds.jpg"><figcaption>The Enquirer/Fred Straub, Cincinnati Enquirer via Imagn Content Services, LLC</figcaption></figure><p>The 1975 World Series had five one-run games. Any game could have gone Cincinnati’s or Boston’s way, including a fantastic Game 7. Game 6 was the most memorable game, though. Carlton Fisk ended a 12-inning stalemate with a home run off the left field pole. He famously waved the ball into fair territory before rounding the bases.</p><p>This was the second extra-inning performance in the series. Greene has the potential to win a Cy Young Award someday or at the very least finish in the top five.​</p><p>One reason a trade might be considered is because of Greene’s durability issues; through his first four years in the big leagues, he’s never made 27 starts or pitched 160 innings. It’s possible that there is a medical risk that we don’t know about.​</p><p>One thing I do know, if they want to trade him, the Reds could get a huge return with that amount of team control remaining, and the Dodgers, Mets, Red Sox, Yankees, Orioles and Giants are likely to be interested. I think it would be a huge mistake for them to deal Greene, but we can’t ignore the rumors because they’re so loud and no one is denying them.​​</p><p>For the Dodgers, Greene would be an insurance policy for their star-studded rotation and the perfect weapon to deploy in October. At just 26 years old, Greene brings elite stuff—a fastball that averages 99.5 mph and a devastating slider that’s become one of the nastiest pitches in baseball. Over the past two seasons, he’s posted a 2.75 ERA (2024) and a 2.76 ERA (2025) with strikeout rates exceeding 30%. Despite missing time with injuries, Greene has demonstrated true ace potential when healthy, striking out 132 batters in just 107.2 innings in 2025.​</p><p>The Dodgers’ rotation is formidable, but depth matters in October, and Greene’s contract is remarkably team-friendly.
