The Tigers and their ace are simply too far apart in negotiations.</p><p>“The Tigers commenced negotiations on an extension with Skubal — who is entering his walk season — but were somewhat surprised to find they were about a quarter of a billion dollars off with their latest offer,” Bowden wrote. “Skubal and Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates are considered the two best pitchers in the sport. He referenced reports from the New York Post that Detroit and the reigning AL Cy Young winner were over $200 million apart in contract negotiations last year already.</p><p>The outlook of the Mets rotation headed into the offseason is murky. Kodai Senga struggled with injuries, while depth pieces like Sean Manaea and David Peterson were inconsistent. Rookie Nolan McLean showed flashes but remains raw. Prospects Brandon Sproat and Jonah Tong are intriguing, but untested over a full season. With limited stability, the club is widely expected to be active this winter.</p><p>A Skubal trade won’t come cheap. With Sean Manaea and Kodai Senga injured, they leaned on three rookies to try and will them into the postseason. That did not work despite <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mets-news-nolan-mclean-makes-franchise-history-start-vs-rangers">solid performances from Nolan McLean</a>, Brandon Sproat, and Jonah Tong. Therefore, if the Detroit Tigers trade Tarik Skubal this offseason, the Mets should be at the front of the line.</p><p>Skubal has put together two historic seasons that will likely end with two Cy Young Awards. Despite losing in the ALDS in both seasons, his playoff statistics are nothing to be concerned about. In six appearances over the past two Octobers, he has a 2.04 ERA. Those two boxes, in addition to his durability, are the most important things for the Mets to find in a pitcher this winter.</p><p>The 2026 free agent class is not as strong in the pitching department as the 2025 class. Framber Valdez and Dylan Cease can be ace-caliber pitchers, but are <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-max-fried-ny-agree-8-year-218-million-deal-free-agency">not the difference makers that Max Fried</a>, Corbin Burnes, and Blake Snell are. Skubal is far and away the best pitcher in the league, and if he is on the move, Steve Cohen should pounce.</p><p>What would the Tigers ask for in a Skubal trade? The limit may not exist, as the two-time defending Cy Young winner is rarely, if ever, on the block. But the Mets have the pieces to blow Detroit away without mortgaging their future. With Soto and Francisco Lindor in the lineup, their offense should be able to stay afloat if they sacrifice some offense to get Skubal. It’s a bet Cohen has to make after an incredibly disappointing season.</p><h2><b>The Mets can blow away the Tigers with a Tarik Skubal offer</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Tarik-Skubal-with-Detroit-Tigers-6.jpg"><figcaption>Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Coming back to the Mets is Tarik Skubal, who is on the last year of his arbitration deal and one year away from unrestricted free agency. They will sign him to a ten-year deal worth $375 million, one of the richest in league history for a pitcher. That contract would take him from his age-30 season to his age-39 season.</p><p>The Tigers should start by asking for Nolan McLean. He showed the most promise of any of the Mets’ pitching prospects in 2025 and has a bright future that starts immediately. They need to replace Skubal in the aggregate, and McLean is a great place to start.</p><p>The reason that the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-news-aj-hinch-mariners-alds-game-5-loss">Tigers lost to the Seattle Mariners in the ALDS</a> was their offense collapsing in key games. So if they are going to trade Skubal, they will need to get much better on offense. That could start here with Mark Vientos and Francisco Alvarez, two key members of the Mets’ offense. Vientos struggled offensively for much of the year and could benefit from a change of scenery. Alvarez dealt with a ton of injuries, but would drastically improve Detroit’s catching position on the offensive side.</p><p>Vientos, Alvarez, and McLean are three of the most valuable assets in the Mets organization. But no one would blame the Tigers if they declined that package in a trade for Skubal. Prospects like shortstop Jett Williams and first baseman Ryan Clifford could be included in the deal as well.</p><p>When Steve Cohen took over, he signed Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer to historic contracts. When those deals did not work, he traded them while retaining much of their salaries. That got a better return of prospects from both the Houston Astros and the Texas Rangers. I think he’s one of the best managers in the game. We have now proactively extended him twice because we want him to be here as long as he’s willing to be here, and I want to work with him as long as I can possibly work with him. It was one of the easier conversations I’ve had, because … he wants to be here too, and I think we’re both bullish on our future in this organization, and we’re both proud of what we’ve done in the three years together.”</p><p>In five seasons with the Tigers, Hinch has compiled a 392-413 record, but that’s with his two strongest seasons being the last two — a pair of ALDS losses.</p><p>Despite pushing their Division Series against the Seattle Mariners to the absolute limit, the season may be remembered more for the Tigers letting the Cleveland <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-most-to-blame-al-central-collapse-guardians">Guardians overcome a 15.5-game deficit</a> in the standings. On July 8, Detroit led the then-second-place Kansas City Royals by 10 games, with Cleveland 5.5 behind them.</p><p>They went 28-41 the rest of the way as Cleveland caught fire, going from six games under .500 to division champions.</p><p>Detroit<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-news-playoff-turnaround-unlike-anything-mlb-history"> got the last laugh, however, ousting the Guardians</a>, 2-1, in a three-game Wild Card series.</p><p>The Tigers did not release the terms of Hinch’s extension.</p><p>“I’ve been in this chair for a long time, not just the managing chair in Detroit but across the league,” Hinch said, “and I have gotten asked a ton of contract and commitments and things like that. And I’m so happy being in Detroit, and I’m so proud to be the manager here. I love working for Scott, and it’s the second time that I was approached and asked for more, and it’s an immediate yes for me.”</p><p>Hinch added that the organization has not made any decisions yet about the rest of the coaching staff. The fifth game will be a winner-take-all matchup, and it could turn out to be an epic battle between the two National League Central rivals.</p><p>The Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners played an epic and memorable game Friday night in the American League Division series. Seattle ultimately won the game and the series, prevailing in the fifth game by a 3-2 margin that required 15 innings to decide.</p><p>Seattle had tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, and the two teams played seven more scoreless innings until the Mariners won the game in the 15th inning as Jorge Polanco delivered a bases-loaded single that allowed J.P. Crawford to score the winning run.</p><p>The game was fraught with tension as both team had numerous opportunities to win the game prior to the game’s conclusion. Murphy watched the game as he prepared his own team to play in the decisive game. He was able to show off a bit of a sense of humor as he observed the tense atmosphere as the game played out.</p><p>“It’s way easier to manage from the couch,” <a href="https://x.com/BNightengale/status/1977121560713740405">Murphy said</a>.</p><h2>Brewers and Cubs have had a hard-hitting series</h2><p>Unlike the Mariners and the Tigers, the series between <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/milwaukee-brewers/brewers-news-milwaukee-brutally-honest-game-5-message-ex-player">the Brewers</a> and the Cubs have featured a much more offensive approach. This series has not had the same kind of scoreless tension that was often the case in the Detroit-Seattle series</p><p>The Cubs have gotten home runs in the first inning in each of the four games of the series, and two of those opening-inning long balls have been delivered by Michael Busch. The Brewers were able to overcome those early home runs in the two games played in Milwaukee, but the Cubs bounced back in the two games played at Wrigley Field.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Game 5 of the American League Division Series defied logic, transcended time and oozed suspense, as the M’s finally punched their ticket <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-news-alcs-game-1-seattle">back to the AL Championship Series</a> with a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-news-seattle-celebrate-alds-game-5-win-amazing-field-clip">walk-off 3-2 win</a> in the 15th inning. Both teams put forth an effort that perfectly encapsulated the desperation of the moment, and the pain that each fan base has endured at various points of the 21st Century.</p><p>But they were not the only ones who emptied the tank in this winner-take-all battle. Umpire Alan Porter rose to the occasion as well, calling an overall impressive game behind home plate. He posted <a href="https://x.com/UmpScorecards/status/1977044249305882756" rel="noopener">96 percent accuracy</a> during the 15-inning marathon, according to the Umpire Scorecards X account.</p><h2><b>Mariners-Tigers Game 5 earns a place in MLB history, free from disrepute</b></h2><p>The Automated Ball-Strike Challenge System is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/mlb-news-officially-implementing-abs-challenge-system-2026">coming to MLB in 2026</a>, but the human element will remain. Ideally, umps will be sharp and allow the action to flow smoothly without the need for too many stoppages. Porter’s performance in a playoff environment should provide skeptics with some reassurance. He did make a couple of key mistakes on borderline calls, however, which Umpire Scorecards highlighted.</p><p>Mariners infielder Leo Rivas, who notched a clutch single in the seventh inning to tie the score 2-2 (a moment that did not even occur at the midpoint, as it turned out), was awarded a ball on an 0-2 count in the bottom of the 12th. Keider Montero’s knuckle curve caught the zone and should have been strike three, but instead, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-news-leo-rivas-notches-game-5-tying-rbi-on-birthday">the birthday boy</a> wound up drawing a lead-off walk.</p><p>Two batters later, with runners on first and second and no outs, shortstop JP Crawford took a pitch on a 3-0 count that should have been ball four but was ruled a strike. He then fouled a bunt attempt, forcing him to completely alter his approach in the at-bat. Crawford flied out and did not advance Rivas to third. Randy Arozarena grounded into a double play, as Seattle blew a surefire chance to end the series.</p><p>If the M’s had won in the 12th, or if Detroit had edged out a victory later on, fans would have torn Alan Porter to shreds and once again stressed the importance of “Robo umps.” It is important to remember this was a near-five-hour game, so a couple of gaffes are essentially inevitable. Fortunately, neither the Rivas nor Crawford calls determined the outcome in the end, allowing the veteran ump to receive his own bit of October recognition.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/jorge-polanco-mariners-alcs-15th-inning-walk-off-tigers">Jorge Polanco recorded the decisive base-hit</a> in the 15th, continuing his 2025 revival and sending the Mariners to the ALCS for the first time since 2001. An epic, tension-filled battle reached a well-earned conclusion without controversy overshadowing it. That is how postseason baseball is supposed to unfold.</p><p>Hopefully, the rest of the proceedings will be officiated at a level close to what Porter attained in The Emerald City.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He joined ClutchPoints in 2023.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Detroit Tigers</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>On Friday evening, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-news-spencer-torkelson-heartbreaking-reaction-to-alds-loss">Detroit Tigers’ 2025 season</a> came to an end with a brutal 3-2 <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-news-aj-hinch-mariners-alds-game-5-loss">loss vs the Seattle Mariners</a> in Game 5 of their ALDS series, in a contest that extended for 15 innings. It was a bitter conclusion to a roller coaster of a Tigers season, that started with a ton of promise, then fell down a cliff, and now is over before the ALCS.</p><p>The Tigers now face an offseason full of big decisions, including what to do about star pitcher Tarik Skubal, who put on a great performance during his start in Game 5.</p><p>Recently, MLB insider Buster Olney<a href="https://x.com/Buster_ESPN/status/1977014121070838185" rel="noopener"> kept it 100% honest</a> about the reality of the situation regarding Skubal.</p><p>“The Tigers face an impossible choice with Tarik Skubal, as the Brewers did when they traded Corbin Burnes to Baltimore in 2024. Skubal is a free agent next fall. Should the Tigers: a) trade Skubal this winter? or b) Retain him through ’26?” wondered Olney on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>Fans in the comment section weren’t ready to hear about that just yet.</p><p>“I like how ‘pay him’ isn’t even an option being considered. Why are these owners so cheap? Detroit is a major city and Skubal is a stud. Give him a real contract!!” wrote one fan.</p><p>“This is the worst thing about baseball. Stop wishing stars away from their home markets just so the rich teams can have ANOTHER superstar. The fans in small markets matter, too,” added another.</p><p>Still, the Tigers are likely to have to choose between those two options at some point down the line.</p><h2><b>A brutal ending for the Tigers</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Tarik-Skubal3.jpg"><figcaption>Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>While they may have lost on a walk-off in the 15th inning, pitching was not the problem for the Tigers on Friday night. Instead, the team was unable to get the bats going at all, squandering multiple opportunities with men on base in the extra innings en route to the loss.</p><p>The Tigers will now face an offseason with more questions than answers as they look to figure out what was going right the first half of the 2025 season and why things suddenly went so sideways after that.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
