Perhaps <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/10-greatest-yankees-players-of-all-time-ranked">only the New York Yankees</a> can boast quite as many big names in the early 20th century, as many of the Tigers’ all-time greats come from that era.</p><p>It starts, predictably, with Ty Cobb, probably the most famous Tiger ever and on the short list of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/updating-and-ranking-the-50-greatest-mlb-players-of-all-time">best overall players in baseball history</a>. But hidden deeper in the list are some forgotten gems; they’re Hall of Famers that don’t get the shine they deserve outside of Motown. Charlie Gehringer is one of them. The career .320 hitter was punishing pitchers into his late 30s. And how about Harry Heilmann, who hit .403 in 1923?</p><p>And don’t worry, kids. Hank Greenberg (1930, 1933-41, 1945-46)</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Hank-Greenberg.jpg"><figcaption>Rick Osentoski-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Hebrew Hammer was one of the most feared hitters of his day and you have to wonder what his final numbers would have looked like if military service didn’t take him off the field for three years in his early 30s. Regardless, he led the league in home runs four times, including in 1938 when he hit 58 long balls, coming close to Babe Ruth’s then-single-season record of 60.</p><p>The two-time MVP won a pair of World Series crowns with the Tigers, hitting .318 in 23 career World Series games. He also has a pair of MVP awards to his name, along with four All-Star nods. Perhaps just as much a credit to his slugging teammates, Greenberg drove in 139 or more runs five times in a seven-year span from 1934 to 1940.</p><h2><b>9. Justin Verlander (2005-16)</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Justin-Verlander.jpg"><figcaption>Tom Szczerbowski-Imagn Images Copyright Tom Szczerbowski</figcaption></figure><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-news-justin-verlanders-wheelchair-moment-giants-teammates-42nd-birthday">Verlander is the only active player</a> on this list, but as anyone who has watched baseball the last two decades can attest, he belongs. The future Hall of Famer came up with the Tigers and spent his first 13 seasons in Detroit, winning Rookie of the Year in 2006 as the Tigers reached the World Series.</p><p>His finest season in Detroit came in 2011 when he won both the Cy Young and MVP awards. He went 24-5 that year with a 2.40 ERA and a league-best 250 strikeouts. Ever the workhorse, Verlander led the league in innings pitched three times in a four-year span and ranks eighth in Tigers history in total innings pitched — a wild feat considering his era and that he did it in 11 full seasons.</p><h2><b>8. Miguel Cabrera (2008-23)</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Miguel-Cabrera.jpg"><figcaption>Troy Taormina-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>If Cabrera wasn’t the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-news-miguel-cabrera-climbs-up-to-george-brett-territory-on-mlb-hits-list">most feared hitter in baseball</a> in the early part of the 2010s, then there aren’t many on the list ahead of him. The only player to win the batting triple crown in the last half century (2012), Cabrera won four batting titles and hit .320 or better in six out of seven years in his prime.</p><p>Though Cabrera only led the league in home runs once, he hit 511 for his career, good for 25th in baseball history. The 12-time All-Star and two-time MVP won a World Series with the Florida Marlins, and though he couldn’t get the Tigers over the hump, he did lead them to the 2012 Fall Classic.</p><h2><b>7. Hal Newhouser (1939-53)</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Hal-Newhouser.jpg"><figcaption>Detroit Free Press via Imagn Content Services, LLC</figcaption></figure><p>Try finding a more dominant three-year stretch from a pitcher than what Newhouser did from 1944 to 1946. In that time, he went 80-27 with a 1.99 ERA, going the distance in 83 of his 104 starts. He twice led the league in strikeouts and twice in ERA — both times under 2.00 — and won a pair of MVPs, becoming the first pitcher ever to win the award in consecutive seasons. As a Tiger, he accumulated more WAR than any other pitcher (58.8).</p><p>Maybe most impressive about Newhouser is that he didn’t start as a can’t-miss phenom. In his first three seasons, he threw to a 4.85 ERA. But as he mastered his curveball, his numbers improved. Though he walked more than his fair share of batters throughout his career, his walk rate dropped significantly from years three to four.</p><p>After his playing days, he became a scout, and if you ever want a fun fact to throw around at parties, google why he retired in the early 1990s.</p><h2><b>6. Harry Heilmann (1914, 1916-29)</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Harry-Heilman.jpg"><figcaption>Detroit Free Press via Imagn Content Services, LLC</figcaption></figure><p>One of only six players in American League history to hit .400 in a season, Heilmann was one of the most prolific hitters of his time and remains one of the forgotten greats in baseball history. The four-time batting champion hit .342 for his career and is one of only six players ever to lead the AL in average at least four times. Coincidentally, two others are on this list.</p><p>After his retirement, Heilmann became a beloved radio voice of the Tigers, known for his storytelling ability. He continued calling games until his failing health took him out of the booth.</p><h2><b>5. Lou Whitaker (1977-95)</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Lou-Whitaker.jpg"><figcaption>Free Press file photo, Detroit Free Press via Imagn Content Services, LLC</figcaption></figure><p>Whitaker, the 1978 AL Rookie of the Year, played all 19 years of his career in Detroit, compiling 2,369 hits along the way. The second baseman won three Gold Gloves and four Silver Sluggers and appeared in more games than any Tiger ever, other than Cobb and Kaline.</p><p>Whitaker’s 75.1 career WAR is the highest for any player not in the Hall of Fame, excluding those kept out from the steroid era. Instead, he’ll have to settle for having his No. 1 retired by the Tigers and a nice, shiny 1984 World Series ring.</p><h2><b>4. Alan Trammell (1977-96)</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Alan-Trammel.jpg"><figcaption>Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>No two players exemplified the 1980s Detroit Tigers more than Trammell and Whitaker, so it’s only fitting that the two appear back-to-back on the upper half of this list (they were also the longest-running double play combination in MLB history, playing short and second for 19 years).</p><p>Trammel, for his part, is a Hall of Famer, World Series MVP, six-time All-Star and, for good measure, ex Tigers manager. The four-time Gold Glove winner and six-time Silver Slugger finished his career with 2,365 hits — seventh-most in Tiger history. Though his raw numbers won’t blow you away (still, they’re very good!), he accumulated 70.6 WAR in his career and struck out only 9.3 percent of the time.</p><h2><b>3. Charlie Gehringer (1924-42)</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Charlie-Gehringer.jpg"><figcaption>Detroit Free Press</figcaption></figure><p>Looking at Gehringer’s numbers, it’s hard to fathom that he did not get into the Hall of Fame until the sixth ballot. The six-time All-Star and 1937 AL MVP hit above .300 13 times in his career, including in ’37 when he also won the batting title with a .371 average. Gehringer led the league in hits, runs and doubles twice each. He also ranks third in Tigers history in triples (146) and fourth in RBI (1,427).</p><p>Gehringer played in three World Series for the Tigers and was on the 1935 championship team. He hit .321 in 81 World Series at bats.</p><h2><b>2. Al Kaline (1953-74)</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Al-Kaline.jpg"><figcaption>Gregory J. Fisher-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The epitome of an all-around player, Kaline was an elite hitter and fielder through his 21-year career, all with the Tigers. The 18-time All-Star and 10-time Gold Glove-winning outfielder is the franchise’s <a href="https://www.mlb.com/tigers/stats/all-time-totals" rel="noopener">all-time home run leader</a> with 399 and his 1,583 RBI rank second in Tigers history behind only Cobb.</p><p>Kaline was also brilliant during the 1968 World Series, hitting .379 with a 1.055 OPS in the Tigers’ seven-game triumph over the St. Louis Cardinals. Nicknamed Mr. Tiger, few players in the modern era have been more synonymous with their team than Kaline with Detroit.</p><h2><b>1. Ty Cobb (1905-26)</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Ty-Cobb.jpg"><figcaption>Aaron Doster-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Purely as a baseball player, Cobb is one of the all-time greats, and calling him that might not do him justice. The 12-time batting champion won each of his crowns in a 13-year span and in the year he didn’t win it, he still hit .370. He is the all-time leader in batting average (.366) and owns a career .944 OPS. His 4,189 career hits ranks second all-time behind only Pete Rose and his 892 stolen bases rank fourth all-time (but first on the all-time list of steals of home with 54).</p><p>In 1936, Cobb was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame on its inaugural ballot, receiving more votes than any other player.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The shoes are currently fetching over $1,000 on the aftermarket, making this the rarest Nike Book 1 released to-date. This tied his career high, and he generated a staggering 22 swings and misses, 15 of which came off his devastating changeup. He threw 93 pitches, 67 for strikes, and allowed just one hit and one walk. He struck out every hitter in the Twins’ starting lineup, including Carlos Correa, Ty France, and Harrison Bader.</p><p>The left-hander opened the game by striking out eight of the first nine batters. This included a stretch of seven consecutive punchouts, marking the ninth time he’s fanned five or more through the first two innings. Skubal was perfect through three innings and struck out the side in the third. He capped off his outing with a 99.7 mph fastball that froze France for a called third strike.</p><p>Tarik Skubal’s performance certainly added to an already dominant 2025 campaign. He entered the game with a 9-2 record, 2.29 ERA, 125 strikeouts (4th in MLB), and an MLB-best 0.87 WHIP. With this win, he improved to 10-2 on the season, recording his 10th straight win, the longest active streak in MLB. He also became only the third Tigers pitcher, joining Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer, to post a 5-0 or better record in June. Furthermore, he extended his home win streak at Comerica Park to 10 games. This is the franchise’s longest since David Wells in the mid-1990s.</p><p>Offensively, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-kerry-carpenters-hr-sends-comerica-park-into-a-frenzy">Kerry Carpenter provided early support</a> with his 16th home run of the season, launching a 3-2 changeup into the right-field seats in the first inning. Many people on social media had a lot of <a href="https://x.com/cmccosky/status/1939492474587648463?s=46" rel="noopener">good things to say</a> about Torkelson’s strong play.</p><p>“Spencer Torkelson just made a spectacular play to turn a 3-6-3 DP,” one user wrote on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>“The metrics still don’t love Spencer Torkelson’s defense (-1 DRS, -2 OAA). But the eye test is much improved over the past two years,” a <a href="https://x.com/codystavenhagen/status/1939492844441370942?s=46" rel="noopener">second user wrote</a>.</p><p>“Great example of how much Torkelson has improved his defensive game over the past year, <a href="https://x.com/blessyouboys/status/1939492570461094003?s=46" rel="noopener">a third user</a> wrote.</p><p>The Tigers have been playing some great baseball this season, and they’re at the top of the AL Central. Though Torkelson has had some great plays this season, it’s been other players, such as<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-news-aj-hinch-javier-baez-2025-season"> Javier Baez, who have been key to their success</a>. Tigers manager AJ Hinch spoke about Baez and his strong play this season.</p><p>“We waited until he got very healthy into spring and back into games and he and I met and he asked, ‘what can I do to help this team be better?’ We just came to that agreement, like, you can move around, like, second base, third base, shortstop, little bit of center,” Baez said. “We didn’t know exactly where the piece was going to fit, but we knew he could contribute in a lot of different ways. And when I said center field, his eyes lit up… He was like, ‘I’ve been trying to tell people I can play center field.’</p><p>“Now, it’s different when you’re shagging in BP or it’s theory you’re going to play center field. But he did that for a better part of a month while we were trying to get healthy… So now he’s back at shortstop and playing virtually everyday at that position. I started him at second the other day, he moved in game to third base two or three games ago. They have sent the American League’s best pitcher Tarik Skubal to the mound and their fans are thirsty for the team’s 53rd win of the season. The Tigers gained an early advantage when slugger Kerry Carpenter launched a long home run in the bottom of the first inning off Twins pitcher Chris Paddack.</p><p>Home runs are nothing new to Carpenter, who <a href="https://twitter.com/tigers/status/1939465132985270482">put a big swing</a> on a high changeup. The ball went out over the right centerfield fence, and it sent Tigers fans into something of a frenzy. The team’s solid clutch hitter and right fielder gave his team the advantage early in the game with their best pitcher on the mound.</p><p>After Carpenter’s first-inning blast, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/tigers-news-aj-hinch-javier-baez-2025-season">the Tigers</a> added a second run in the fourth inning when left fielder Riley Greene joined the home run parade for Detroit. He also took advantage of another high changeup and sent it even further than Carpenter’s blast.</p><h2><b>Carpenter adds triple, but forced out of game</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/A.J.-Hinch-has-the-Tigers-playing-sensational-baseball.jpg"><figcaption>Mandatory Credit: Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Tigers were rolling along  behind Skubal’s outstanding pitching, and Carpenter figured out Paddack once again when he tripled in the bottom of the fifth inning. He rocketed the ball down the first base line and the ball got by Minnesota right fielder Willi Castro.</p><p>Carpenter was able to make his way to third base, but he labored throughout his trip around the bases. Since he has had hamstring issues in the past, Hinch did not want to take any chances and Carpenter came out of of the game.</p><p>The Tigers have gotten fine clutch hitting throughout the season. Greene leads the team with 19 home runs and 63 runs batted in. He is followed by Spencer Torkelson who has blasted the ball out of the park 17 times with 50 RBI. Carpenter is third on the team in home runs with 16 and he has 32 RBI.</p><p>No team in either league is dominating its division the way they Tigers have to this point. The Tigers are 52-32 as they compete Sunday night, and that gives them their huge edge over the second-place Cleveland Guardians (40-42). While the history of baseball shows that multiple teams have blown double-digit leads in the past, the Tigers appear to have the pitching and clutch hitting to sustain nearly any challenge.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

OF Matt Vierling is back in action after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-news-detroit-promising-matt-vierling-injury-angels-series" rel="noopener">being out with a torn rotator cuff</a>, and INF Trey Sweeney is being optioned for the minors.  </p><p>On Saturday, the Tigers <a href="https://x.com/DetroitTigersPR/status/1938975286030180727" rel="noopener">made it official</a> that Vierling will be off the 10-day injured list, whereas Sweeney was sent to the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens. </p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-getting-key-weapon-back-ahead-of-guardians-clash" rel="noopener">Vierling returned from his initial injury in late May</a> but only played four games after experiencing soreness in his shoulder. Ultimately, he was sent to Toledo for a rehab stint.</p><p>While there, Vierling batted .207 with four runs scored and two RBIs throughout seven games. Meanwhile, Sweeney is being optioned to Toledo to make room for Vierling’s return. </p><p>More than that, Sweeney is having some struggles at the plate. He’s batting .221 with 45 hits, four home runs, and 23 RBIs. However, he has 57 strikeouts to his name. </p><p>As for Vierling, his limited play has him batting. 182 with two hits and two RBIs.  The Tigers are currently 51-32 and in first place in the American League Central. </p><p>On Friday, the Tigers lost to the Twins 4-1. Nevertheless, they are a team in contention. </p><h2><b>The Detroit Tigers are at the halfway point </b></h2><p>Currently, the Tigers are tied for the best record in baseball along with the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers. Their strong performance presents opportunities for both Vierling and Sweeney to make significant contributions. </p><p>With Vierling reactivated, Detroit is hoping to get him back to being a solid presence at the plate.</p><p>Last year, Vierling batted .257 with 133 hits, 16 home runs, and 57 RBIs. His return can sustain an excellent Tigers offense that is currently 4th in runs scored with 411 and 9th in home runs with 100.</p><p>As for Sweeney, he is a promising young player who could develop into a strong hitter. Not to mention the fact that he could play second base, shortstop, and third base. </p><p>If he could improve in Toledo, Sweeney could add a reliable, youthful dimension to the team. </p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The 2024 season was especially bad for Baez, who hit just .184 with a .516 OPS. The Detroit Tigers star, at 32 years old, has had a resurgent 2025 campaign, though. He’s currently hitting .289 with a .793 OPS. Tigers manager AJ Hinch <a href="https://x.com/JonHeyman/status/1938399891463557490" rel="noopener">recently revealed</a> what led to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/tigers-news-javier-baez-gets-aj-hinch-endorsement-amid-resurgence">Baez’s bounce back season</a>, via Jon Heyman of The New York Post.</p><p>One big element of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/tigers-news-aj-hinch-drops-truth-bomb-javier-baezs-center-field-move">Baez’s campaign has been his move to center field</a>.</p><p>“We talked about Javy all offseason on what his role was going to be,” Hinch explained on The Show with Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman. “Now when Javy got hurt last year, was right at the beginning of this resurgence of young talent coming up to the big leagues. We had a number of guys come up from Triple-A… We had this influx of youthful energy… Our team had changed. And so during the offseason, now you’re putting these pieces together, like, what is Javy gonna do to help us?”</p><p>The Tigers were patient, but ultimately moved forward with the Baez-center field idea as injuries continued to emerge. Baez’s ability to still play the infield gave Detroit additional options as well.</p><p>“And we waited until he got very healthy into spring and back into games and he and I met and he asked, ‘what can I do to help this team be better?’ We just came to that agreement, like, you can move around, like, second base, third base, shortstop, little bit of center. We didn’t know exactly where the piece was going to fit, but we knew he could contribute in a lot of different ways. And when I said center field, his eyes lit up… He was like, ‘I’ve been trying to tell people I can play center field.’</p><p>“Now, it’s different when you’re shagging in BP or it’s theory you’re going to play center field. But he did that for a better part of a month while we were trying to get healthy… So now he’s back at shortstop and playing virtually everyday at that position. I started him at second the other day, he moved in game to third base two or three games ago. The jack of all trades part of Javy’s game is awesome.”</p><p>Perhaps Baez’s defensive success has helped him find his confidence at the plate again. Both teams won on Thursday and are 51-31 on the season. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-news-aj-hinch-reveals-reset-reason-detroit-success">Tigers manager AJ Hinch has pushed all the right buttons</a> to get his team playing at their peak form. However, Detroit wants to make moves at the deadline to ensure they have the best chance to win in the fall.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-news-gleyber-torres-signing-detroit-spurning-nationals">Tigers added Gleyber Torres from the New York Yankees this offseason</a> in a big move. Despite making that splash, Detroit is not a team known for making big trades. However, having a good chance at a deep playoff run could change the way general manager Jeff Greenberg looks at the July 31 deadline.</p><p>Hinch and the front office helped the team get to the playoffs last season. Detroit upset the Houston Astros in the Wild Card round in one of the most surprising seasons in recent memory. This year, the Tigers do not have the element of surprise on their side. Opponents will be ready for them, making it that much more difficult to win high-leverage games.</p><p>Detroit has everything they need to take a good shot at the rest of the American League. However, there are players on the market that cold boost their chances even more if the Tigers can get them at the right price.</p><p>Here are three under the radar trades the Tigers could make to surprise the league before the deadline.</p><h2>Toronto Blue Jays Catcher Tyler Heineman</h2><p>Tigers receive: C Tyler Heineman</p><p>Blue Jays receive: RP Yosber Sanchez</p><p>For the most part, Detroit’s roster has no holes. However, Dillon Dingler is one of the few players who could be upgraded before the deadline. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-news-tarik-skubal-trust-admission-shutting-down-yankees-new-catcher">His tight bond with Tigers ace Tarik Skubal</a> has him at the top of Hinch’s depth chart. However, Tyler Heinemen could come in and spell Dingler so he does not have to catch every single game of the season.</p><p>Heineman plays behind Christian Kirk on the Blue Jays, but in more than 65 at-bats on the season, the 34-year-old’s batting average sits at <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/stats/_/id/33142/tyler-heineman" rel="noopener">.377</a>. That kind of contact is attractive to contenders whose catchers perform much worse at the plate. His contract also presents him as a low-risk move, perfect for the Tigers to pounce on.</p><p>Setting Heineman’s value at the right point is crucial to Detroit’s plans. The Tigers do not have the same amount of assets as other teams around the league. However, prospects like Sanchez could entice Toronto, whose focus has started to shift towards their future.</p><h2>Pittsburgh Pirates Outfielder Adam Frazier</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Pittsburgh-Pirates-players-speak-with-each-other.jpg"><figcaption>© Matt Marton-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Tigers receive: OF Adam Frazier</p><p>Pirates receive: OF Justice Bigbie</p><p>One of the other spots of interest on Hinch’s roster is in right field. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-getting-key-weapon-back-ahead-of-guardians-clash">Matt Vierling made his 2025 Tigers debut late</a>, but is back on Detroit’s injured list right now. Depth is imperative in the outfield, especially in the dog days of the MLB season. Many different veteran outfielders will be moved later this summer, and the Tigers could have their pick.</p><p>Frazier presents teams with an experienced option to put into their outfield. The 33-year-old has a decade of major league experience and has been to the playoffs three times. Even at the end of his prime, he is still an above average fielder. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/pittsburgh-pirates/pirates-agrees-to-reunion-with-former-all-star">Frazier signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract</a>, making him a contender’s dream on the trade market.</p><p>Vierling, Parker Meadows, and Riley Greene are the Tigers’ starting outfielders barring catastrophe. Hinch has praised Greene’s offensive burst as he continues to lead Detroit’s offense. If nothing else, Frazier provides the Tigers with the peace of mind they need in the outfield. Hinch has options in the outfield, but he would not say no to one more reliable player on his roster.</p><h2>Miami Marlins Relief Pitcher Anthony Bender</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Miami-Marlins-relief-pitcher-Anthony-Bender.jpg"><figcaption>Rhona Wise-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Tigers receive: RP Anthony Bender</p><p>Marlins receive: SP Sawyer Gipson-Long</p><p>Will Vest and Tommy Kahnle have been a dynamic duo for the Tigers so far this season. The former leads the team with 12 saves on the season while the later is not far behind with eight. Kahnle nearly had to step in for <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-news-will-vest-avoids-il-injury">Vest once again after he narrowly avoided Detroit’s IL</a>. Even if Hinch’s closer needed to miss time, he is confident in the players behind him.</p><p>However, the setup men out of the Tigers’ bullpen have shown signs of weakness this month. Bringing in a player like Anthony Bender gives Detroit a different weapon to throw at their opponents as they try to hold leads created by their starting pitchers. Skubal has been dominant this season, but the bullpen has cost him a few wins by falling apart after he exits the game.</p><p>Bender is already close to career-highs in holds in his fourth year in the major leagues. The 30-year-old’s ERA is also a career-best so far this season. Unfortunately for him, he is on a Marlins team that is nowhere near contention.</p><p>If Greenberg and the Tigers can acquire him at a fair value, he could be a key part of their playoff strategy against the formidable offenses that stand between Detroit and a World Series trophy. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-news-will-vest-reveals-detroit-really-good-at-after-key-series-win">Vest has spoken highly of Detroit’s mindset this season</a>. On Tuesday night against the Oakland Athletics, Greene went 4-5 with a double and two RBIs. The Tigers got out to a shaky start despite having ace Tarik Skubal on the mound, but thanks to an offensive explosion led by Greene, they went on to win the game 11-4.</p><p>Riley Greene <a href="https://x.com/EvanPetzold/status/1937712511567941818" rel="noopener">was on fire</a> on Tuesday, but it didn’t start then. He has been impressive all season long, but the last two weeks or so have been something else. In the last 15 days, Greene is 21-51 with four homers, 17 RBIs and a 1.250 OPS. In the last seven days, he is 13-24 with two homers, 10 RBIs and a 1.514 OPS. There aren’t many players seeing the baseball like Greene right now.</p><p>“He’s on a heater,” Tigers manager AJ Hinch said after Tuesday’s win. “It’s fun to watch him when he’s hitting to all fields, he’s hitting for power, he’s hitting in big spots. I love that he’s letting the game come to him a little bit more. Now that’s a little bit easier when you’re piling up the success that he’s piled up in the last few weeks, but it coincides with getting good pitches to hit and getting in good counts and not trying to do too much. It’s amazing in this sport, for guys like him, not trying to do too much actually has you do a lot of things well. He’s an example of that.”</p><p>Greene is a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-news-aj-hinch-reveals-reset-reason-detroit-success">big reason why the Tigers</a> became the first team to reach 50 wins on the season on Tuesday. The 11-4 win improved the team’s record to 50-30 on the year, which is the best record in baseball. The Los Angeles Dodgers aren’t too far behind as they are currently sitting at 49-31. The other teams in the AL Central are pretty far behind, however. The Tigers currently have a 9.5 game cushion between them and the second place Cleveland Guardians.</p><p>The opportunities will be there for Riley Greene and the Tigers to pick up more wins in the last week of June as they have two more games at home against the Athletics, and then the struggling Minnesota Twins will come to Detroit. The Twins are 1-11 in their last 12 and they have lost five games in a row.</p><p>Detroit and Oakland will be back in action on Wednesday for the second game of that series. The two teams will get underway at 6:40 ET from Comerica Park in Detroit. The Tigers were a mediocre team for most of 2024, and they didn’t show any signs of having a playoff run in them. Then, out of nowhere, Detroit turned on the jets down the stretch and earned a playoff spot. The Tigers took down the Houston Astros in the Wild Card round before losing to the Cleveland Guardians in the ALDS. That late surge has spilled over to the 2025 season as well as the Tigers are currently 49-30 to start the year, which is the best record in baseball.</p><p>It feels like the MLB season just started, but the All-Star break and the trade deadline are right around the corner. The All-Star break begins on July 13th for the Tigers, and the team is hoping to go into that with a big lead in the division. Detroit is currently 8.5 games up on the second-place Guardians.</p><p>The MLB trade deadline will come shortly after the All-Star break ends as it will be on July 31st. The Tigers are expected to be buyers at the deadline as they hope to gear up for a deep postseason run. While they have the best record in baseball, the roster could use some additions as some injuries have left Detroit in a bit of a sticky spot.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-news-jackson-jobe-crushing-injury-update-aj-hinch">Detroit did lose one of its starting pitchers recently</a> as Jackson Jobe is out for the season after needing Tommy John surgery. Reese Olson has also been out for a while, but he should be back relatively soon. Either way, the Tigers could use another arm as outside of Tarik Skubal, starting pitching has struggled a little bit recently.</p><p>Another position to watch for the Tigers is third base. Detroit doesn’t have a true third baseman right now, so adding a veteran with a good bat before the trade deadline would be huge.</p><p>The Tigers want to add to this team at the deadline, and that means that some players are going to have to go. Detroit fans might not be happy seeing some guys go as there are a lot of fan-favorites on this team, but baseball is a business. Here are a couple of players who are loved in the Motor City but could still be traded this season:</p><h2><b>Javier Baez</b></h2><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-news-javy-baez-doubles-down-2-home-runs-against-pirates">Javier Baez is having an incredible bounceback year</a>, and Tigers fans are loving it. However, this could be the perfect time for the Tigers to trade him. Before this season, his huge contract was a disaster for Detroit as Baez had been a shell of his former self. He is finally starting to look like the player that he once was, but is that going to last? Baez hit .184 for the Tigers last year in 80 games, and he finished with six home runs and 37 RBIs. So far this season in 66 games, he has nine homers and 36 RBIs, and he is hitting .290 with an .801 OPS. He is looking good, and his trade value is going up.</p><h2><b>Kerry Carpenter</b></h2><p>Kerry Carpenter is another fan-favorite that might be a good trade option right now. Carpenter looked like a budding superstar during the past couple of seasons, and after a strong start to this season, he is starting to struggle. Carpenter is currently hitting .246 with a .729 OPS, and he has 13 home runs and 27 RBIs. However, June has been ugly. Carpenter is hitting .167 in June with a .585 OPS, and he has three homers and five RBIs. He is trending in the wrong direction as he has struggled more and more as the month has gone off. Slumps happen, but if this is more than that, the Tigers have a chance to trade Carpenter before he loses his value.</p><p>Javier Baez and Kerry Carpenter are two players that the Tigers love, and they want them to be part of this team, but again, baseball is a business. If a trade ends up being the best thing for the team, then Detroit might have to make a difficult decision.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

After a couple of sluggish performances against the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday and Saturday, Detroit bounced back with an impressive victory in the series finale on Sunday. The Tigers still lost the series, but the ability to bounce back in impressive fashion is why the Tigers are having such a good season.</p><p>A couple of bad losses can easily spiral into a disastrous stretch, but the Tigers <a href="https://www.mlb.com/tigers/news/tigers-score-6-runs-in-9th-in-win-against-rays" rel="noopener">haven’t let that happen</a> yet this year. While things have been harder in June, the team still finds a way to put the poor games behind them, and they find ways to get wins with their backs against the wall.</p><p>“Our reset button has been really good,” Tigers manager AJ Hinch said, according to an article from MLB.com. “We play well. We can pitch. We usually play defense. We put up a good fight against the [opposing] starting pitchers. We’ll play our 27 outs. We’re not playing for a certain win total in June, and we’re not really after any sort of recognition on what we’re doing. We just reset and play the next series. I love this team for a lot of reasons, but one of the main reasons is that we come to play every day.”</p><p>A big reason why the Tigers were able to salvage this <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-news-riley-greene-judge-cal-raleigh-hot-start">particular series against the Rays was Riley Greene</a>. He was fantastic all series long as he went 6-10 at the plate with two home runs and four RBIs, and he also made numerous spectacular plays in the outfield. He collected three hits in Sunday’s finale.</p><p>“[Greene] made excellent defensive plays, and that’s not even talking about his bat,” Hinch said. “The ebbs and flows of the season are really hard, but there’s some consistency. One, it’s going to rain in Florida. Two, it’s really hot in Florida this summer. Three, Riley Greene will be in the lineup. He doesn’t get a break. When those droughts come whenever he’s not getting a lot of hits, it’s just because you see him in there every day. When he’s good — like, just average — it’s better than most players.”</p><p>Riley Greene is from Florida, so whenever he goes down there to play in front of his family, he unlocks another level.</p><p>“It’s awesome, and I love that my parents were here,” Greene said. “It’s great to have a happy flight home after some long days. We’ve had rain delays, a double-header [Thursday], things like that. But at the end of the day, we’ve still got to win baseball games. So this was big.”</p><p>After beating the Rays on Sunday, the Tigers improved to 49-30 on the year. They have a good opportunity at home starting on Tuesday to get some more wins as the Oakland Athletics will be in town for a three-game series.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
