The Cardinals won 83 games in 2024. On the other hand, big contracts from aging veterans and a mediocre farm system leave St. Louis with little ability to maneuver. That doesn’t bode well for a team that wants to contend in 2025 — and that’s not their focus.</p><p>It seems the Cardinals are content with punting on the next couple seasons as <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cardinals-chaim-bloom-set-to-lead-st-louis-rebuild">Bloom works his magic</a>. The executive was the architect behind the competitive Tampa Bay Rays teams of the early 2010s that managed to beat divisional foes like the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox despite a meager payroll.</p><p>The Cardinals brass is asking Bloom to both cut payroll and build a competitive team over the next few years. It’s no easy task, but there are a few moves he can make this winter that will set the Cardinals up for success down the road.</p><h2><b>The Cardinals should try to part ways with superstars Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Nolan-Arenado.jpg"><figcaption>Jeff Curry-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>One of the Cardinals’ two high-paid superstars will be easy to part with and the other might be impossible — but they need to try.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-rumors-brewers-eyeing-paul-goldschmidt-move-in-free-agency">Paul Goldschmidt is an unrestricted free agent</a>. After he hit .245 with a 98 OPS+, there’s not much that indicates he should be the veteran to return amid a rebuild, continuing to produce for years to come. That’s $26 million off the books right there, simply by doing nothing.</p><p>Trading Nolan Arenado is a much tougher task and the Cardinals’ brass might come to discover that it’s just not possible. They are, however, <a href="https://www.si.com/mlb/cardinals/st-louis-cardinals-news/cardinals-to-pursue-trade-involving-260-million-star-although-difficult-pat3" rel="noopener">expected to try</a>, according to St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Derrick Goold.</p><p>“Sure sounds like the Cardinals will pursue [an Arenado trade] if that’s what Arenado wants, and he has the no-trade clause to make his involvement key,” Goold wrote. “That’s only part of the reason why seeing where this goes is so difficult. Not to mention the fact that the Cardinals don’t yet know what payroll limits they’re going to be dealing with. So many variables.”</p><p>Trading him is going to be difficult and there’s no reason to expect they can do it without eating at least a chunk of the $52 million remaining on his deal. Arenado, however, is still a productive player, if not the superstar he was earlier in his career. His 101 OPS+ puts him right at the league average, but after finishing his third straight season hitting fewer home runs than he did the year before, it’s fair to question if the third baseman heading into his age 34 season has three years left in the tank.</p><p>Moving Arenado would provide another benefit for the Cardinals. It would give  Thomas Saggese a chance at consistent playing time at third. The 22-year-old came to St. Louis in the Jordan Montgomery trade last year and has emerged as one of the team’s best prospects. He didn’t do much in 18 games with the Big League club, but he profiles as a solid power hitter who has met or exceeded expectations at every stop in the minors.</p><p>César Prieto is another possibility from the minor leagues. Known for putting the ball in play, Prieto is a contact machine with a 9.6% strikeout rate in the minors.</p><h2><b>The Cardinals’ pitching needs to get younger</b></h2><p>The Cardinals took the first step toward revamping their pitching rotation at the trade deadline when they acquired Erick Fedde as part of a last-ditch effort to make a playoff push. He has another year on his deal, worth $7.5 million, and it’ll be worth it to see if his magical 2024 was indeed a product of him reinventing himself in Korea or a mere flash in the pan.</p><p>Sonny Gray is the only Cardinals pitcher signed beyond next year (other than Andre Pallante, who has yet to hit arbitration). The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-rumors-reds-to-aggressively-pursue-trade-for-75-million-cardinals-pitcher">Cardinals already plan on shopping Gray</a> and the $65 million minimum that he’s still owed on his contract. They have club options for Kyle Gibson and Lance Lynn, who will be 37 and 38 next year, respectively. Miles Mikolas has one year left on his deal, worth $18.5 million. Tough as it might be to part with any the three veterans, the Cardinals will likely not bring all of them back.</p><p>To replace any departures, the Cardinals have a few youngsters internally who can step in. Lefty Quinn Matthews is their best pitching prospect, and at 23, he has soared through the St. Louis farm system. Ignoring his lackluster numbers in only four Triple-A starts, Matthews has all the tools to last in the Major Leagues. He boasts a mid-90s fastball that, on its own, isn’t too daunting. Coupled with a <a href="https://www.mlb.com/prospects/cardinals/quinn-mathews-687273" rel="noopener">low-80s fastball</a> that MLB.com says has 12-13 inches of horizontal break, however, he can make hitters look foolish.</p><p>Michael McGreevy and Gordon Graceffo both got looks in the Majors this year and could compete for a spot in the rotation out of Spring Training. McGreevy saw the most success, going 3-0 with a 1.96 ERA in four appearances (three starts). He walked only two batters over 23 innings pitched.</p><p>As for Graceffo, he only threw 7.2 innings so it’s even harder to judge how his stuff translates to the Majors. The former Villanova Wildcat struggled to find his command in the upper levels of the Minors. His best pitch is his slider and his other secondary pitches have shown signs of improvement. After an offseason of development, it will be interesting to see what he brings to Spring Training.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Bloom will <a href="https://x.com/BNightengale/status/1840830128642764850" rel="noopener">sign a five-year deal</a>, according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale.</p><p>Nightengale added that current general manager Mike Girsch will be reassigned within the organization and Bloom will oversee player development “until he officially replaces [current President John] Mozeliak” after next season. With their eyes pointed towards that goal, <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2024/09/29/mlb-awards-2024-shohei-ohtani-aaron-judge-mvp/75437739007/" rel="noopener">reports broke on Sunday</a> that they would be targeting a former starting pitcher of theirs to help them.</p><p>“The St. Louis Cardinals, who will announce a series of personnel moves on Monday with Chaim Bloom taking on a greater role, plan to shop veteran starter Sonny Gray while reducing payroll,” reported USA Today’s Bob Nightengale in an article published Sunday morning. “Gray, who signed a three-year, $75 million contract last winter, has a full no-trade clause, with the Cincinnati Reds expected to be among the teams aggressively pursuing him.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cardinals-news-sonny-gray-pitching-issue-loss-reds">Gray had a successful tenure</a> with the Reds, pitching for the club from 2019 to 2021 before leaving to go to the Minnesota Twins. The Cardinals picked him last winter, but they are reportedly looking to decrease payroll following a third-place finish in the NL Central. Would part of that solution include sending Gray back to Cincinnati? There are a lot of talented pieces on the big-league roster, but injuries have ravaged the club and helped lead them to their last place finish this season.</p><p>With young starters like Greene, Abbott and Julian Aguiar in tow, Cincinnati could use a veteran ace to help front their staff. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cardinals-news-sonny-gray-100-real-about-beating-padres-twice">Gray has served</a> in that role once before and could definitely do it again. Although the veteran hasn’t seen a lot of action in the postseason, he might get his chance as soon as next season if he joins the Reds.</p><p>The team’s young core is one of the brightest in baseball, and they have more pieces, like shortstop Edwin Arroyo, making their way through the minors. As long as these players continue to grow and improve at the major league level, then bringing a pitcher like Gray in makes sense. Will Gray return to Great American Ballpark this winter? They have missed the playoffs in consecutive seasons and appear to be trending in the wrong direction. Katie Woo of The Athletic reported that former Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox general manager Chaim Bloom <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5798267/2024/09/27/st-louis-cardinals-jordan-walker-john-mozeliak/" rel="noopener">will oversee the</a> Cardinals’ rebuild.</p><p>“Chaim Bloom…joined the Cardinals earlier this year as a consultant to audit the club’s minor-league operations,” Woo wrote. “Bloom has since joined the front office full-time. He will be charged with making changes in the Cardinals’ farm system based on his findings. His first and most pressing task: hiring a new director of player development.”</p><p>This is considered the most important position in the front office for the Cardinals. They have proven that free agents want to join the historic franchise on big contracts. That strategy, however, has not worked to get them a championship in the past decade. While Nolan Arenado and Paul Goldschmidt were fantastic players in their primes, St Louis is now paying prime money for post-prime years.</p><p>They have developed <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cardinals-news-masyn-winn-reaction-home-run-win-reds">one excellent prospect in Masyn Winn</a>. The shortstop hit .265 with 15 home runs and 55 RBIs at just 22 years old. While the NL Central usually allows them to rebuild on the fly and still make the playoffs, that is not the case anymore. The Brewers have turned into a small-market powerhouse, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cubs-news-craig-counsell-admission-brewers-win-nl-central">Craig Counsell should lead the Cubs</a> to better seasons, and the Pirates and Reds have exciting cores.</p><p>Part of Woo’s reporting is that winning will be on the back burner for the foreseeable future. When Bloom went to the Red Sox, he was tasked with shepherding the team out of the 2018 title. He traded Mookie Betts, on ownership’s request, and immediately became public enemy number one. Developing players is a skill that he has from his days with the Rays.</p><p>Bloom was the general manager of the Rays starting in 2014 when Andrew Friedman left for the Dodgers. He continued the “Rays Way” of developing players and turned it into a powerhouse in the AL East. After he left, many of the players he scouted helped Tampa win the pennant in 2020. It’s strange to see them fighting to stay above . 500 after years of being a perennial contender in the National League. Yet 2024 will mark their second-consecutive season without a playoff berth. The future doesn’t look particularly bright either with serious adjustments being considered within the front office.</p><p>The consensus is that the main culprit for St. Louis’ recent downfall is their lack of resourcing for their player development. The funds are limited as are the number of coaches. St. Louis employs only five full-time minor-league instructors. The Cardinals once had one of the best minor-league systems in the league. Now their <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cardinals-news-thomas-saggese-promoted-top-prospect">top prospects are struggling</a> more than progressing.</p><p>Katie Woo of The Athletic spoke to several Cardinals employees about the state of the franchise. Most of them were <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5798267/2024/09/27/st-louis-cardinals-jordan-walker-john-mozeliak/" rel="noopener">on the same page</a>.</p><p>“We’re in trouble,” one team employee said. “This is not easily fixable within the next year or year after. This is going to take some time.</p><p>“I don’t know how this was f—ed up so bad over the last few years.”</p><p>“It’s broken,” another staffer said. “Our system is broken in a way. How it got there, I don’t know.”</p><p>The Cardinals made the playoffs four-straight seasons from 2019-22, winning one series and two division titles. They have two World Series wins and four NL pennants over the past 20 years. St. Louis will hold onto that for a while.</p><h2><b>Cardinals not ready to spend</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/St-Louis-Cardinals-Oliver-Marmol.jpg"><figcaption>Dale Zanine-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cardinals-news-nolan-arenado-shouts-out-cards-best-player-after-walk-off-win">Cardinals fans</a> might not like what they’re about to read, but there seems to be a direction St. Louis will eventually have to go in if they want to soften their payroll. The Cardinals are preparing, or at least are thinking of, not contending over the next few years or not going out of their way to build a contender.</p><p>MLB teams have won without stars before. It’s hard to win championships or compete consistently without those impact players, but postseason berths can and do happen.</p><p>However it shakes out for the Cardinals this offseason, they’ll have to replace several players. First baseman Paul Goldschmidt is a free agent, as is key reliever Andrew Kittredge. Starting pitchers Kyle Gibson and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cardinals-news-lance-lynn-season-done-il-move">Lance Lynn have club options</a> above $10 million.</p><p>St. Louis could look a lot different in two years, and it’s a wonder if the Cards will be contending by then. That’s not a statement that the franchise is used to.</p><p>The NL Central figures to be pretty wide open over the next few seasons. The Milwaukee Brewers will probably remain the favorite after capturing their third division title in four years. St. Louis has won two division crowns in the last nine years.</p><p>Even if the Cardinals don’t feel great about their playoff prospects entering the 2025 season, they could still sneak into the dance. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cardinals-news-oliver-marmol-shows-support-for-andre-pallante-after-unfortunate-inning">Oliver Marmol</a> will be on the hot seat for much of the year if he’s not fired. charset=UTF-8" />    </head>    <body>        <article id="mvp-content-main"><header><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Lars-Nootbar-1.jpg"></figure><h1>Lars Nootbaar opens up about intriguing offseason after meeting with Oli Marmol</h1><time class="op-published" datetime="2024-09-27T01:42:11-07:00">September 27th, 1:42am</time><time class="op-modified" datetime="2024-09-27T01:42:11-07:00">September 27th, 1:42am</time><address><a>Nathan Yasis</a>Nathan Yasis is an Associate Editor for ClutchPoints, specializing in the NBA.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">MLB</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Following a meeting with St. Louis Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol, where both player and coach expressed their frustrations over a disappointing season, Lars Nootbaar responded immediately by hitting a home run and a double in his first two at-bats on Thursday afternoon against the Colorado Rockies.</p><p>After struggling early in the season due to rib and oblique injuries, and feeling frustrated by his increasing ground-ball rate and declining power, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cardinals-news-lars-nootbar-x-ray-to-bottom-injury-woes">Nootbaar aimed to address the necessary changes</a> for the offseason and the expectations the Cardinals have for him.</p><p>While it resembled a typical end-of-season review, it also served as <a href="https://www.mlb.com/cardinals/news/lars-nootbaar-working-to-unleash-power" rel="noopener">a crucial venting session</a> for a player whom the Cardinals still believe has significant potential as a power hitter.</p><p>“You work on certain things to achieve certain goals, and sometimes you’ve got to do something different if you want different results,” Nootbar remarked via MLB.com</p><p>Focusing on lifting the ball to avoid the rollover grounders that troubled him throughout the season, Nootbaar launched a four-seam fastball from Kyle Freeland 384 feet for a home run in his first at-bat.</p><h2><b>Lars Nootbaar’s new approach</b></h2><p>Demonstrating his exceptional talent for generating triple-digit exit velocity, he sent the ball flying with an exit velocity of 105.7 mph, according to Statcast.</p><p>“I think this offseason is going to be one for [change]. … It’s not going to be a complete swing overhaul or anything like that. A lot of it is intent and changing some things mechanical. I’ll be doing my research and trying to formulate a plan of attack,” he continued.</p><p>Marmol expressed enthusiasm over Nootbaar’s immediate success following their conversation about focusing on driving balls into the gaps and clearing the outfield wall for greater offensive impact.</p><p>The Cardinals are worried about Nootbaar’s rising ground-ball rate, which has increased from 46% in 2022 to 50.5% in 2023, and now stands at 52.5% this season. This trend has limited his power potential, resulting in just 11 home runs, 18 doubles, and two triples over his 106 games played this year.</p><p>Nootbaar went 2-for-5 with a solo home run, an RBI double, and scored a run in Thursday’s 10-8 loss to the Rockies.</p><p>The 27-year old launched his 11th home run of the season, taking Freeland deep for a solo shot in the first inning. Since September began, he’s gone 18-for-57 (.316) with three homers, 13 RBIs, 10 runs scored, and 14 walks to match his strikeouts.</p><h2><b>A better 2025 season for Nootbaar and the Cardinals</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Pittsburgh-Pirates-at-St-Louis-Cardinals.jpg"><figcaption>Jeff Curry-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Lars Nootbaar had higher expectations for himself, which likely means he faces a busy offseason to implement the swing changes he and the Cardinals believe are necessary.</p><p>A healthy 2025 season could benefit Nootbaar, who suffered two cracked ribs early in Spring Training after colliding with a wall while pursuing a fly ball. After recovering from that injury, he strained an oblique muscle in late May, sidelining him for another six weeks.</p><p>“We’ve been talking quite a bit about him being on the ground and early in counts him being able to do more damage,” said Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol.</p><p>“He’s very selective, but early we need him to take his A swing. In three starts this month, Fedde has thrown 15.2 innings, allowed 15 hits, and none of those hits have left the yard. Along with that, Fedde has allowed just five runs, which gives him an ERA of 2.87. Fedde was pitching well with the Chicago White Sox before being traded, so we know what he is capable of. If Fedde can be that good pitcher, the Cardinals will win this game.</p><p>Gomber is a hittable pitcher, especially when playing at Coors field. Teams are batting .281 off him at Coors field, and he has allowed 16 home runs in his 13 starts. The Cardinals have a great chance to do some real damage in this game. With Gomber being a very hittable pitcher, and opposing teams hitting the ball hard off him, the Cardinals should be able to put up runs, and win this game.</p><h2><b>Why The Rockies Will Cover The Spread/Win</b></h2><p>The Rockies need Gomber to have a good start if they want to win this game. Both teams have been eliminated from the playoffs for a while, but that does not mean these players are going to take any pitches off. That includes Gomber. Gomber’s last start was a rough one, but his previous two were good. In those two starts, Gomber has allowed just three runs in 14 innings pitched against two pretty good teams. That is how Gomber needs to pitch in this game. If he can go five or six strong innings, the Rockies will be able to win this game.</p><p>Colorado has won six of their last 10 games, so they are playing pretty well. In those 10 games, the Rockies are batting .237, but they have scored 51 runs. That is more than enough runs to win games. In fact, when the Rockies score five or more runs in a game this season, they have a record of 39-21. Along with that, the Rockies are 36-39 at home with a .267 batting average, and .770 OPS. Colorado is a better team at home, and they need that to show in this game.</p><h2><b>Final Cardinals-Rockies Prediction &amp; Pick</b></h2><p>This game comes down to which pitcher I trust more to do their job.
