His ability to play all three outfield positions and handle tough at-bats gives him value in a contender’s platoon or as a fourth outfielder with regular reps. For New York, who needs stability in left field and a backup plan for Juan Soto and Brandon Nimmo, Yastrzemski makes sense. He also killed it with the bat, as he hit 21 home runs while maintaining a .285 batting average. His 48 doubles and 14 triples led the NL, too. His numbers are slightly down this year, but he has still already hit eight triples. Duran is a speed threat who can hit for both power and contact. He’d give the Giants a four-headed outfield monster and better their chances of winning this year’s World Series. Plus, he obviously has familiarity with the recently traded for Devers.</p><p>It didn’t take a huge prospect haul to acquire Devers due to his shaky relationship with the Red Sox. Even though Devers is the superior player to Duran, the Giants can afford to give up a few more high-quality minor leaguers from their <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/top-10-mlb-farm-systems-ahead-of-2025-season">farm system</a> this go around if they were to deal with Boston again.</p><h2><b>Is Jarren Duran or Alex Bregman more likely to be moved?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Red-Sox-outfielder-Jarren-Duran-16-reacts-after-striking-out.jpg"><figcaption>© Brian Fluharty-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Neither Bregman nor Duran is all that likely to be moved. ESPN <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45568636/ranking-mlb-trade-deadline-candidates-alex-bregman-jarren-duran" rel="noopener">gives</a> it just a 10% chance that the third baseman will be traded this year, whereas the outfielder has only a 25% chance of being moved. Bregman is unlikely to be traded because he signed a three-year, $120 million deal this past offseason. Not only does that contract carry a high average annual value, but Bregman could opt out of the deal at season’s end, and the idea of him being a rental could scare teams off.</p><p>Duran, meanwhile, isn’t headed to unrestricted free agency until 2029. The Red Sox may want to move him while he still has tons of value, as his breakout campaign last season could be looked at as a fluke if he doesn’t pick it up soon. Even so, the Red Sox have no need to blow things up, so they’d be better off holding onto Duran.</p><p>The team is just outside of the playoff picture, and a few buyers’ moves could get them firmly in the hunt for a wild-card spot. Devers was traded not because Boston is looking to rebuild, but because his relationship with the Red Sox was fractured after they forced him to change positions. But there is little room for error in the crowded Senior Circuit. This ballclub could benefit greatly by gaining some extra separation before the All-Star break. That will not happen if the lineup does not collectively step up.</p><p>A slumping rookie did his part to infuse some life into the offense in Tuesday’s 4-2 loss versus the Miami Marlins (32-45). Christian Koss hit a <a href="https://x.com/ClutchPoints/status/1937713531274838083" rel="noopener">376-foot two-run home run</a> that bounced off the top of the wall and back onto the field in the fifth inning, putting the Giants on the scoreboard and cutting the deficit to one. The long ball was a big reason why veteran starter Cal Quantrill did not go five complete innings, giving San Francisco an extended look at a bottom-third bullpen.</p><p>Unfortunately, Koss’ success did not spread to the rest of the dugout. Horrifyingly, the team notched only one hit after the homer and none in the final four innings. A home loss to one of the worst squads in the NL tarnishes some of the good vibes that came from a hard-fought series victory over the Boston Red Sox this past weekend. While it is just one game, this outcome underscores the Giants’ vulnerability. The club’s offensive issues are only magnified with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-news-crucial-matt-chapman-injury-update">Matt Chapman on the injured list</a>. Recent trade acquisition <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-news-bob-melvin-rafael-devers-groin-injury">Rafael Devers is also banged-up</a> at the moment, as he pushes through a groin injury. Outfielder Heliot Ramos is enjoying a fruitful campaign, batting .285 with 13 homers, but there are holes throughout this lineup.</p><p>Christian Koss has been one of them during the early potion of his MLB career. He is hitting .224 and slugging .303 through 76 at-bats. Perhaps his recent feat of strength will lead to a surge moving forward. Either way, the Giants have to figure out how to manufacture more runs on a nightly basis. Devers, however, is dealing with a groin injury at the moment, although he has continued to play despite the circumstances. Giants manager Bob Melvin <a href="https://x.com/MLBNetworkRadio/status/1937567960366768462" rel="noopener">downplayed the severity</a> of the injury in an interview with MLB Network Radio on Tuesday.</p><p>“It’s minor and it’s getting better everyday,” Melvin said of Devers’ injury. “He’s taking some ground-balls over there. He went first to home the other day, which looked pretty good, concerned me a little bit. It was great that he was able to go full out.”</p><p>The Giants are proceeding with caution in reference to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/giants-news-why-rafael-devers-wont-play-first-base-vs-red-sox">Devers playing first base</a> amid the injury concern. From a long-term standpoint, third base may not even be an option with Matt Chapman handling the hot corner. Chapman is currently recovering from an injury of his own, however.</p><p>Still, it seems as if Devers will be limited to DH and first base moving forward. For now, the former Red Sox star is the designated hitter for the Giants.</p><p>“It’s a minor issue but it kind of plays into the defensive part,” Melvin continued. “You know, it’s first base, you’re stretching, you’re doing some things that you do a little bit differently than you do on the other corner (third base)… As far as getting ready to play first base, it’s probably pushed back the timeline a little bit.</p><p>“But I think this week we ramp that up a little bit and try to get him ready. Hopefully pretty soon he’s able to play first base.”</p><p>Rafael Devers is a terrific hitter. Defensive uncertainty surrounded him with the Red Sox, however. Ahead of the game on Tuesday, the Giants made an interesting move that may just be short-term.</p><p>Future MLB Hall of Famer Justin Verlander is <a href="https://x.com/SFGiants/status/1937221631858135272" rel="noopener">coming back off the Paternity List</a>, and he will start Tuesday’s game against The Fish. The right-hander is still looking for his first win as a Giant. He is currently 0-4 with a 4.45 ERA and has not really had any success yet this season. The Giants are 44-34 this season and are fighting for a playoff spot in the National League. They even have a chance to win the NL West if they continue to play at the rate at which they are. SF needs a healthy Verlander to help reach that goal.</p><p>The corresponding move is a questionable one, but one that may just be short-term. Infielder Tyler Fitzgerald is being sent back down to Triple-A to free up a roster spot for Verlander’s return. The Giants decided on keeping Christian Koss over Fitzgerald, despite Fitzgerald coming off an incredible rookie season. Fitzgerald is not having a good season and may want to work on some things in Triple-A to benefit him when he does return to the big leagues.</p><p>On the year, the infielder has just two homers and 10 RBIS with an average of just .230. He hit 15 homers with a .280 average last season in his breakout year.</p><p>SF has a crowded infield. One of those players had to go down, and the Giants feel that Fitzgerald can benefit from extra at-bats in the minors. Adding superstar <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-news-rafael-devers-drops-subtle-dig-at-red-sox-for-position-changes">Rafael Devers is massive, and he could start playing first base</a>.</p><p>Brett Wisley and Dominic Smith are left-handed bats, while Koss and Casey Schmidt are right-handed bats who have seen a lot of success this season. Willy Adames and Wilmer Flores are not going anywhere anytime soon. What was a regular set on a West Coast trip turned into a revenge series last week when<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-news-rafael-devers-trade-san-francisco-fans-losing-minds"> Rafael Devers was traded from Boston to San Francisco</a>. Just days later, his former team came into town. Red Sox manager Alex Cora spoke after Sunday’s loss and <a href="https://x.com/timbhealey/status/1936931333827436899" rel="noopener">gave his feelings</a> on the Devers trade.</p><p>“Alex Cora said he and Rafael Devers wound up not speaking/touching base this weekend,” Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reported. “‘At one point, we’ll catch up,’ Cora said. ‘But happy for him. We’re very proud of him. Shoot, he is a tough friggin’ matchup. He’s a tough matchup. … We wish him nothing but the best.'”</p><p>There have been a lot of stories about how the relationship between the Red Sox and Devers deteriorated during the season. Cora has not offered his feelings on that relationship, but gave Devers his flowers when asked. While the Giants did win the series, Devers did not do much. He went 2-12 with a home run.</p><p>The Red Sox have to press on without Devers and figure out how to properly develop their three big prospects. Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, and Kristian Campbell were all up together for a short time. But struggles in the field and at the plate sent <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-kristian-campbell-sets-record-straight-on-rafael-devers-first-base-drama">Campbell back to AAA</a>. Sending Devers out was partly to clear a spot in the lineup for the deep group they have. But those players have to step up to make the trade worth it.</p><p>The Red Sox continue their West Coast road trip with three games against the Los Angeles Angels. The Giants continue their home stand with three games against the Miami Marlins. While the headlines <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-news-rafael-devers-first-san-francisco-home-run-red-sox">revolve around the Giants’ new star in Rafael Devers</a>, the team is also dealing with the word around the relief pitcher as he responded to the allegations.</p><p>The 28-year-old’s wife, Caroline Hjelle, would post on the social media platform TikTok on Friday with a caption that spoke about</p><p>“When my MLB husband abandons us on Mother’s Day a week after this (video was taken), once I finally found about his affairs and stopped putting up with his abuse, so I’ve been raising two boys alone,” Hjelle posted.</p><p>After Saturday’s game which San Francisco beat the Boston Red Sox, 3-2, the relief pitcher wouldn’t have a specific comment about the accusations, <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/giants-address-allegations-regarding-sean-hjelle" rel="noopener">saying that he and his wife are in the process of finalizing a divorce</a>, according to MLB.com.</p><p>“I don’t have an official comment right now,” Hjelle said. “I would like to talk to my agent, my lawyer. This has been something that has been going on for over a year now in terms of our relationship, our divorce, our separation, and everything. I don’t have any official comment right now, I just want to talk to the appropriate people to figure out what the steps are.”</p><p>“I’m just taking it in stride right now,” Hjelle continued. “No official comment right now. I feel confident saying that I will have one eventually. Devers had gotten off to somewhat of a slow start at the plate, but he found his groove against his old team on Saturday.</p><p>In the third inning, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/giants-news-watch-rafael-devers-smack-first-giants-home-run-against-red-sox-after-trade">Devers found the barrel and crushed a two-run home run</a> out to left field to give the Giants a 3-0 lead. The Red Sox made a push late in the game, but the Giants held them off to get a 3-2 victory and even the series at a game apiece before the final on Sunday to decide it.</p><p>Hitting his home run in the orange and black against his former team was certainly a great moment for Devers, but he wasn’t about to take any victory laps after the game. He <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45557991/devers-goes-deep-vs-red-sox-first-homer-giant" rel="noopener">downplayed the achievement</a> postgame, via Jesse Rogers of ESPN.</p><p>“Nothing more special than any other home run that I’ve hit,” Devers said, per Rogers. “I’m just happy I could contribute to the team’s win.”</p><p>Overall, Devers has rebounded this season from his disastrous start to the year to put up some pretty strong numbers, and now he is finally starting to settle in after about a week in the Bay Area. The Giants brought him in to produce runs at a high rate and to give this lineup some extra pop, and moments like that homer on Saturday are exactly why.</p><p>If Devers can continue hitting the ball like the best version of himself, nobody will want to see this Giants squad in the postseason. While San Francisco is still a bit off the pace in the NL West, just 3.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers, it is still firmly in position to get a wild card spot and should continue trending in that direction with Devers giving them some extra juice.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

As the trade deadline continues to get closer and closer, both teams could be looking for upgrades at certain spots.</p><p>On the other end of the spectrum, teams who are falling out of the race will be looking to get future assets back for some of their veteran players. The Pittsburgh Pirates are one of those squads, and infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa is one of the names that could be on the way out.</p><p>The Yankees and Giants are two teams that <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2025/06/22/manny-machado-stats-san-diego-padres-hall-of-fame/84303745007/" rel="noopener">could be in the market</a> for Kiner-Falefa, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.</p><p>“The New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants are keeping a close eye on versatile Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who should be available at the trade deadline,” Nightengale wrote.</p><p>Kiner-Falefa is hitting .280 this season, so he could be a solid piece who gets on base at the bottom of either of these lineups. He still isn’t producing very many runs, but he can still be a good addition for cheap. He is also a solid player in the field that would add depth to the middle infield of both squads.</p><p>Of course, if the Yankees do end up adding the 30-year old, it would be a reunion after he played in pinstripes in 2022 and 2023.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/yankees-news-aaron-judge-adjustments-slump-busting-game-orioles">Yankees are just coming out the other side of a brutal offensive slump</a> after blowing out the Orioles 9-0 on Saturday night while the Giants are in the middle of a very tight series with the Boston Red Sox.</p><p>As it stands, the Giants are just 3.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West, so it makes sense why they would be trying to improve and get back on level terms with the defending champs. On the other side, the Yankees are in the lead in the AL East but are fending off a spirited push from the Tamps Bay Rays and the Toronto Blue Jays.</p><p>While it may not be the flashiest thing to do on paper, adding a player like Kiner-Falefa could be the difference between a division title and a wild card spot in these tight races.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

While the front office did a good job of keeping their trade negotiations under wraps, it sounds like the Giants weren’t the only team they were negotiating with, as the Chicago Cubs were among several other teams in the running for Devers.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/giants-news-rafael-devers-red-sox-savage-happiness-admission">Tensions between Devers and the Red Sox</a> had been boiling all season long, due in large part to his unhappiness with the team continually looking to change his position. Boston finally decided to cut bait with their superstar slugger, but not after <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2025/06/22/manny-machado-stats-san-diego-padres-hall-of-fame/84303745007/" rel="noopener">discussing a deal with a couple other teams</a>. San Francisco landed him, but the Cubs, Seattle Mariners, San Diego Padres, Toronto Blue Jays, and Atlanta Braves were also involved in discussions for Devers.</p><p>“The Red Sox say that they had conversations with the Mariners, Cubs, Padres, Blue Jays and Atlanta about Devers before dealing him to San Francisco,” Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported.</p><h2><b>How Giants landed Rafael Devers from Red Sox over Cubs, other teams</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/San-Francisco-Giants-designated-hitter-Rafael-Devers.jpg"><figcaption>D. Ross Cameron-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Red Sox could have prioritized bringing in top-tier prospects in exchange for Devers, but they had a different goal when it came to this deal. They wanted to get out of the remainder of Devers’ 10-year, $313.5 million contract extension he signed back in 2023, and according to Giants owner Greg Johnson, his team’s willingness to take on that deal is the main reason why the trade went down.</p><p>“If the Giants had not agreed to assume the $254.5 million remaining in Devers’ contract, Giants owner Greg Johnson says there would have been no trade,” Nightengale reported.</p><p>Even then, Boston still got a decent return for Devers, as Kyle Harrison and James Tibbs III both have a lot of upside in the eyes of several talent evaluators. This year, however, the Boston Red Sox did not wait to kick things off, sending Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. The 28-year-old slugger <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-news-watch-rafael-devers-smack-first-giants-home-run-against-red-sox-after-trade">hit his first home run for Bob Melvin’s team on Saturday</a>, helping his new team beat the Red Sox at home.</p><p>Devers’ two-run shot ended up being the difference in a 3-2 win. However, the home run did more than just give San Francisco their 43rd win of the season. According to MLB’s Sarah Langs, Devers is the first player since Hall-of-Famer Rickey Henderson to hit the first home run for his new team <a href="https://x.com/SlangsOnSports/status/1936563691828187195" rel="noopener">against his former team</a> in the same season.</p><p>The All-Star played more than 1,000 games with the Red Sox before they sent him away. According to Boston manager Alex Cora, the trade came as a result of the drama surrounding Devers potentially playing at first base. He refused to move from the designated hitter spot, and the Red Sox decided that he was not worth the trouble.</p><p>After <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-news-how-rafael-devers-perform-1st-game-red-sox">struggling in the first game between Boston and San Francisco, Devers</a> bounced back on Saturday. The Giants evened up the season series with their win, making Sunday’s finale the tiebreaker between the two teams.</p><p>While Boston and San Francisco play in different leagues, the series between them has been chippy. Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman was upset with how Giants infielder Wilmer Flores handled the final at-bat of Friday’s game. The benches did not fully clear, but coaches needed to hold Chapman back.</p><p>That incident took the focus off of Devers. Every move that the Giants make at this year’s deadline is meant to give them an edge over the Los Angeles Dodgers.</p><p>Boston, on the other hand, might have revealed their plans with the Devers trade. The Red Sox have standout prospects waiting for their chance to join the team. Moving Devers helps clear the way for them.</p><p>For now, though, San Francisco is happy to have Devers. He blasted a <a href="https://twitter.com/JeffPassan/status/1936526349486666040">two-run homer</a> in the bottom of the third inning off former teammate Brayan Bello, and that gave the Giants a 3-0 lead over their American League visitors.</p><p>Devers had grounded out in his first at bat in the game, and he failed to get a hit in any of his five at bats in Friday night’s 7-5 loss to the Red Sox. However, Devers easily measured a low, outside fastball and blasted it a couple of rows deep into the bleachers. Devers took a home run stroll that Red Sox fans have grown very familiar with throughout his career in Boston.</p><p>He was clearly pleased to hit his first home run for <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/red-sox-news-roman-anthony-thoughts-rafael-devers-extremely-clear-giants-trade">the Giants</a> and the fact that it came against the Red Sox after the surprising trade had to feel good. The home run gave the Giants a 3-0 lead. When Devers came up again in the fifth inning, Bello struck out his former teammate.</p><h2>Devers says he will play first base for Giants</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Devers-lit-up-his-old-buddy-Brayan-Bello-against-the-Red-Sox.jpg"><figcaption>Mandatory Credit: Brian Fluharty-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Devers had been the Red Sox third baseman for eight seasons, but when the team acquired Alex Bregman shortly before the start of spring training, Red Sox management told that Devers that he would serve as the team’s designated hitter.</p><p>Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas suffered a season-ending knee injury in early May, and management asked him to pick up a first baseman’s mitt and learn the position. Devers had no interest, saying he had been told he was the team’s designated hitter.</p><p>After Bregman suffered a right quad strain a couple of weeks later, Devers did not go back to his old position either. As a result, it appeared there was an impasse between the star player and the team. That impasse remained in place until last Sunday, when the Giants sent four player to Boston — including two pitchers — to acquire the three-time All-Star.</p><p>Now that Devers is with the Giants, he says he will learn first base and play the position for the Giants. Identifying the specific meaning behind the accusation is crucial given the serious legal implications of alleged physical abuse, but in either circumstance, scathing comments are being made about the 28-year-old right-hander’s character. The Giants made an official statement on Saturday.</p><p>“We are aware of these serious allegations,” it reads, per Slusser. “We have been in contact with MLB. These type of allegations fall under their jurisdiction and we won’t be commenting further.”</p><p>Hopefully, everyone will have more clarity in the near future. Sean Hjelle is 1-1 with a 4.66 ERA, seven strikeouts and seven walks in 9 2/3 innings pitched this season. He appeared in Friday night’s 7-5 loss to the Boston Red Sox, allowing one run in one inning of work.</p><p>The media and fans alike surely have questions, but the organization is deferring to MLB at this time. But the three-time All-Star may be a bit less content after losing to his former team 7-5.</p><p>Just days after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-rafael-devers-blockbuster-red-sox-trade">Devers joined the Giants</a> through an unexpected, blockbuster trade, San Francisco squared off against the Red Sox – almost as if the schedule makers anticipated the stunning development.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-news-rafael-devers-admission-revenge-series-red-sox">Devers was gifted an early revenge game</a>, an opportunity to stick it to the Red Sox after months of animosity had built up, leading to Boston shipping the ninth-year veteran to the opposite coast.</p><p>However, Devers would not get his revenge in Game 1 of the series as the new Giants designated hitter <a href="https://x.com/BRWalkoff/status/1936290586761306328" rel="noopener">went 0-5</a> with a strikeout against the Red Sox, per B/R Walk-Off on X.</p><h2><b>Rafael Devers was quiet in the Giants’ loss to the Red Sox</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Rafael-Devers-5_fded05.jpg"><figcaption>Bob Kupbens-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Rookie righty Hunter Dobbins got the start for Boston and, while he allowed five runs (four earned) in four innings, Devers was held in check. The Red Sox know the 28-year-old slugger better than anyone as he had spent his entire career with the team until five days ago. And they seemed to have a game plan for their former teammate.</p><p>Devers was fed a steady diet of four-seam fastballs. He saw 16 pitches in the game and 10 of them were four-seamers. He also saw five sinkers and one slider. But he couldn’t hit any of them.</p><p>Devers once again batted third in the order for San Francisco. In his first at-bat he swung at the first pitch he saw and grounded out to first. Then, leading off the third inning, Dobbins threw five straight four-seamers and got <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-news-rafael-devers-drops-subtle-dig-at-red-sox-for-position-changes">the Giants’ DH</a> to fly out to center. Devers would ground out to short in the fifth and again fly out to center in the seventh inning.</p><p>Despite the rough day at the plate, however, he still had a chance to help his new team late in the game. Devers batted second in the bottom of the ninth inning with Aroldis Chapman on the bump for Boston and the Giants down 5-7. But Chapman struck him out swinging on a 101 mph four-seam fastball.</p><p>The Giants have now lost five of the last six contests, falling to 4.5 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West. The Red Sox, meanwhile, are suddenly in the thick of the division race. The growing animosity led to the blockbuster trade and Devers seems to be enjoying the change of scenery.</p><p>And the ninth-year veteran won’t have to wait long to exact revenge on his old club. The Giants start a three-game series at home against the Red Sox on Friday.</p><p>Although Devers reportedly told Boston media members that he wasn’t interested in talking about the past in a pregame interview ahead of the highly anticipated grudge match, he did provide one <a href="https://x.com/PavlovicNBCS/status/1936174529984053353" rel="noopener">pointed response</a>, per NBC Sports’ Alex Pavlovic on X. Asked when he was last this happy, Devers acknowledged, “It’s been a long time… I feel happy. I’m relaxed now.”</p><h2><b>Rafael Devers gets a fresh start with the Giants</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Rafael-Devers-2_c9c877.jpg"><figcaption>Bob Kupbens-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Devers’ relationship with the Red Sox began to deteriorate this spring when the team signed Alex Bregman in free agency with the expectation that the Gold Glove winner would take over third base duties. Devers had been Boston’s starting third baseman since debuting with the team in 2017. And, although he’s proven to be a defensive liability at the hot corner, he did not initially accept a position change.</p><p>Eventually Devers agreed to cede third base to Bregman and embrace his new designated hitter role. While it was clear some hard feelings lingered, Devers’ offensive production helped smooth things over. But then the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-alex-cora-admission-lead-up-rafael-devers-trade">situation reached a boiling point</a> when first baseman Triston Casas suffered a season-ending knee injury. The Red Sox asked Devers if he would take over first base and the three-time All-Star flat out refused, publicly <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-rafael-devers-sounds-off-gm-amid-position-controversy">calling out Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow</a>.</p><p>Shortly after the first base incident, Devers was shipped to the Giants. He was moved less than two years into a massive <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/rafael-devers-contract-grading-red-sox-11-year-331-million-extension">11-year, $331 million contract extension</a>.</p><p>Now with the Giants, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-rafael-devers-first-base-truth-bomb-stunning-trade-giants">Devers explained his side of the first base debacle</a>. The speculation about Devers not wanting to play first base became one of the biggest topics leading up to the deal. Now that the trade is complete, the new San Francisco Giants third baseman shares his real thoughts about switching positions in Boston.</p><p>The 28-year-old third baseman admitted that had the Red Sox asked him to move to first base at the beginning of spring training that he <a href="https://x.com/IanMBrowne/status/1936181571503157654" rel="noopener">would have accepted it</a>, according to Ian Browne of MLB.com. From the sounds of it, there was a tiny window of opportunity for Boston to avoid disgruntling Devers over the position change.</p><p>“I would say that I have put some good numbers over at Boston, and I think that I do feel that I have earned some respect,” said Rafael Devers. “And if they would have asked me at the beginning of Spring Training, yes, I would have played [first base].”</p><p>The reason why the Red Sox didn’t ask Devers to play first base at the beginning of spring training is likely because Triston Casas was fully healthy at the time and was being deemed a breakout candidate for Boston. The franchise didn’t ask Rafael Devers to change positions until after Casas fell to a season-ending knee injury.</p><p>Regardless, the three-time All-Star no longer plays for the Red Sox and is now in the Giants’ lineup. Rafael Devers is not playing first base either in San Francisco. He’s remaining at third base, but is going to serve as the team’s designated hitter more often than not.
