With NBA training camp two weeks away, it appears the 30-year-old will not return to the league this season. Hollis-Jefferson <a href="https://www.hoopshype.com/story/sports/nba/2025/08/02/international-transactions-log-where-are-former-nba-players-going/85463630007/" rel="noopener">signed a contract</a> with Filipino basketball club Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, according to HoopsHype.</p><p>The 6-foot-6 forward spent four seasons with the Nets after they selected him with the No. 23 pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. He averaged 9.9 points, 5.9 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.0 steals on 44.4 percent shooting over 234 appearances with 147 starts. However, his struggles as a three-point shooter (21.2 percent on 0.7 attempts per game for his career) held him back.</p><p>Hollis-Jefferson last appeared in the NBA in 2021, when he played in 11 games with the Portland Trail Blazers. He averaged 23.6 points, 7.8 rebounds and 4.4 assists on 46.8 percent shooting over five appearances and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/other-sports/fiba-world-cup-news-rondae-hollis-jefferson-reacts-kobe-chants-epic-performance">went viral for a 39-point performance</a> during a loss to New Zealand.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/brooklyn-nets/nets-news-former-brooklyn-fan-favorite-bold-statement-lack-nba-contract">Hollis-Jefferson recently explained his social media posts</a> campaigning for an NBA opportunity during an interview with HoopsHype.</p><p>“I should be in the NBA, dude. I know everyone knows how hard I work, how much I care about basketball, but that’s really where [my social media posts] stemmed from,” he said. “Just one of those days sitting and just thinking about the game, thinking about the highs and lows, and just wanting to be on that big stage and really, really wanting to be closer to home, to be closest to my kids. The Nets will host “Practice in the Park” on Sept. 27 at Potomac Playground in Bed-Stuy. Brooklyn previously held the event at Brooklyn Bridge Park before moving it to Potomac Playground last year.</p><p>General Manager Sean Marks said last year that the team made the move to bring the event closer to the community.</p><p>“Community is central to everything we do and our annual Practice in the Park is a unique opportunity for us to tip off the season with our fans,” Marks said. “Each year we look forward to bringing the sport outside directly to our fans, playing on the same courts they play on each day. The Russian floor general will have ample opportunity to prove his value as the team’s starting point guard. His projected role has some eyeing him as a contender for the 2025-25 NBA Rookie of the Year.</p><p>Bleacher Report’s Dan Favale <a href="https://bleacherreport.com/articles/25240840-2026-nba-award-favorites-sleepers-and-wild-cards" rel="noopener">recently labeled</a> Demin a wild card for the award.</p><p>“Demin quelled some of the draft-night “Really? Him?!?” reactions by proving he can work away from the ball on offense during summer league. Even after the Nets selected a trillion potential creators in the first round, he’ll have a prominent role that translates to standout scoring and assist averages,” Favale wrote.</p><p>Demin has an intriguing skill set as a 6-foot-9 point guard with elite passing ability. He eased worries about his outside shooting at Summer League, converting 43.5 percent of 7.7 three-point attempts per game.</p><h2>Is Egor Demin legitimate contender for NBA Rookie of the Year award?</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Egor-Demin-2.jpg"><figcaption>Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>There are still glaring <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/brooklyn-nets/brooklyn-nets-2025-nba-draft-grade-for-no-8-pick-egor-demin">concerns about whether Demin’s ball-handling will hold up</a> against NBA pressure. He struggled to separate from defenders at BYU. That continued at Summer League, as he rarely got downhill or touched the paint, attempting just four of his 27 shots from inside the three-point line.</p><p>Yet, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/brooklyn-nets/nets-coach-reveals-reason-egor-demins-summer-league-role-change">Demin will have an extremely long leash</a> to work through struggles early this season. Favale isn’t the only media member to speculate that Brooklyn’s top draft pick could enter the rookie awards conversation.</p><p>NetsDaily’s Lucas Kaplan spoke about Demin as a First Team All-Rookie candidate when <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyeAds0OlZk" rel="noopener">giving his hottest takes for the 2025-26 season on the Locked On Nets podcast</a>.</p><p>“I think of all the Nets rookies, he’ll get the most minutes… There is a world where he makes enough threes. He’s going to have the highlight passes. I think he’ll just get his way into points, rebounds, and assists,” Kaplan said. “And voters will enjoy his style of play, more so than maybe a guy like Colin Murray-Boyles, whose per-game averages might really not look that good… Of that back half of the lottery, if Egor has the fattest counting stats and he makes enough threes and he has all these flashy passes and you look up and he has a 14-7-6 game once a week or every two weeks, which I think is feasible, I could see the voters going for it.”</p><p>Demin will shoulder a heavy burden this season as Brooklyn’s lead ball-handler. Lee’s decision came after Simmons rebuffed free agent interest from the New York Knicks, according to the New York Post’s Stefan Bondy.</p><p>“Simmons’ agent, Bernie Lee, recently dropped him as a client… A source said that decision occurred after the point guard sent signals that he wasn’t interested in whatever came from his agent’s conversations with the Knicks,” Bondy wrote.</p><p>NBA insider Marc Stein reported on Tuesday that the Knicks offered Simmons a one-year, minimum contract, which he declined. However, several insiders with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/knicks-rumors-new-york-insiders-ben-simmons-contract">ties to the Knicks have since reported that New York did not make an offer</a>. Regardless, the Knicks and Boston Celtics were the only teams with reported interest in the former No. 1 pick.</p><p>Simmons turning New York away begs the question: Is he heading toward retirement?</p><h2>Ben Simmons turns down Knicks interest amid retirement rumors</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Ben-Simmons-2.jpg"><figcaption>Darren Yamashita-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Retirement <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/nba-rumors-ben-simmons-unsure-continuing-career-amid-knicks-interest">appears to be a distinct possibility for Simmons</a>. Bondy recently reported that the former Philadelphia 76ers star “is questioning whether he even wants to continue playing in the NBA.” <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nets-news-ben-simmons-reveals-considered-retiring-offseason-amid-injury-struggles">Simmons revealed in January that he considered retirement</a> last summer while rehabbing a back injury.</p><p>The Aussie’s stock has plummeted since his collapse during the 76ers’ second-round loss to the Atlanta Hawks in 2021. After sitting out the entire 2021-22 campaign, he looked like a shell of his old self over the last three seasons.</p><p>Simmons averaged 5.9 points, 5.8 rebounds and 5.8 assists while appearing in just 108 games with the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers. He battled numerous back injuries during that span, requiring multiple procedures.</p><p>While the Knicks had interest in Simmons, it’s not a foregone conclusion that he will have a roster spot next season if he decides to continue playing. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported that Simmons may be forced to sign a non-guaranteed contract and battle for a roster spot at training camp.</p><p>“The reality is, he’s looking at the minimum contract… He might even be forced to take a contract where he’s not guaranteed,” Windhorst said. “He would have to sort of earn his way onto the team through training camp and then maybe not know his status until midway through the season. After absorbing Terance Mann, Michael Porter Jr. and Haywood Highsmith in salary dumps, the Nets still have over $16 million in cap space.</p><p>They could utilize a portion of their remaining space in a trade with the Philadelphia 76ers, who <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGCsQcYjF2s" rel="noopener">are attempting</a> to shed salary to re-sign restricted free agent Quentin Grimes.</p><p>“There has been buzz all summer long about the Sixers looking to potentially move one of, if not both, Andre Drummond and Kelly Oubre,” said NBA insider Jake Fischer. “If they are able to find a deal for one of those two guys as we get closer to camp, that would open up some more wiggle room for Philadelphia to be able to pay Grimes a little bit more.”</p><p>After re-signing Cam Thomas, Day’Ron Sharpe and Ziaire Williams, Brooklyn still needs to spend roughly $7 million to reach the NBA’s salary floor before opening night. The veteran center struggled across 40 appearances (23 starts) in 2024-25, averaging 7.3 points and 7.8 rebounds on 50.0 percent shooting in 18.8 minutes per game.</p><p>Philadelphia spent second-round picks on centers Adem Bona (No. 41 in 2024) and Johni Broome (No. 35 in 2025) in the last two drafts. Both present better options to fill backup center minutes behind Joel Embiid this season.</p><p>Meanwhile, Oubre was a starter for Philadelphia last season after signing a two-year, $16.4 million contract. He posted decent counting stats across 60 appearances, averaging 15.8 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.8 assists. However, his outside shooting continued to regress, as he shot 29.3 percent from three on a career-low 4.2 attempts per 36 minutes.</p><p>Unlike Drummond, the 76ers may be able to move Oubre without attaching a draft pick to his contract. After making three offseason trades and an NBA-record five first-round picks in June’s draft, the rebuilding squad <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/brooklyn-nets/nets-news-cam-thomas-signing-6-million-qualifying-offer-stalemate">signed Cam Thomas to his one-year, $6 million qualifying offer</a> last week. The signing was the culmination of a failed contract negotiation with the 23-year-old guard.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/brooklyn-nets/why-cam-thomas-signing-6-million-qualifying-offer-marks-beginning-of-end-of-nets-tenure">Thomas’ decision to sign his qualifying offer likely signals</a> the beginning of the end of his Brooklyn tenure. It also leaves the Nets with significant cap space and more roster moves to make entering the 2025-26 campaign.</p><h2>Why Nets have more roster work to do before regular season after Cam Thomas signing</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Sean-Marks1.jpg"><figcaption>Wendell Cruz-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>NBA teams are required to spend 90 percent of the salary cap while carrying 15 standard contracts at the start of the regular season. After re-signing Thomas, Day’Ron Sharpe and Ziaire Williams, Brooklyn is $649,000 below the salary floor with 18 players on standard contracts, four of whom are on non-guaranteed minimum salaries.</p><p>If the Nets waive their three lowest-paid players to get down to 15 standard contracts, they will be $6.9 million below the salary floor, meaning they’ll have to make a move to add salary before the season.</p><p>Brooklyn could sign a free agent or execute another salary dump trade to reach the salary floor. The team <a href="https://www.spotrac.com/nba/brooklyn-nets/cap/" rel="noopener">has roughly</a> $17 million in remaining cap space and can get to over $24 million by waiving its players on non-guaranteed contracts.</p><p>The Philadelphia 76ers have reportedly explored trades involving Andre Drummond and Kelly Oubre to open space to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/46-million-contract-quentin-grimes-should-sign-76ers-end-holdout">sign restricted free agent Quentin Grimes</a>. Drummond is on a $5 million expiring contract, while Oubre is in the final year of his deal at $8.38 million. The Nets could absorb either player into their cap space or use the $8.8 million room exception to retain their space. In such a scenario, Philadelphia would attach draft capital or a young prospect as compensation.</p><p>While another Brooklyn deal could be coming to reach the salary floor, the team will likely preserve the majority of its cap space entering the regular season, as more teams could be looking to shed salary at the trade deadline.</p><p>The Boston Celtics are $4 million above the first apron and $12.1 million above the luxury tax. League sources expect them to try to duck below both before the deadline. Boston has reportedly explored trades involving Anfernee Simons, who is on a $26.7 million expiring contract, after acquiring him from the Portland Trail Blazers.</p><p>The Nets could be a trade partner down the line as the NBA’s only team with cap space.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, <a href="https://marcstein.substack.com/p/monday-best-the-latest-nba-trade" rel="noopener">New York offered</a> Ben Simmons a one-year, minimum deal, which he declined.</p><p>“New York is limited to minimum contract offers as training camps draw near and Simmons entered the summer hopeful of securing a contract above the minimum after he split last season between the Nets and Clippers. Boston and New York, I’m told, expressed the most serious interest in Simmons this summer,” Stein wrote.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/nba-rumors-ben-simmons-unsure-continuing-career-amid-knicks-interest">Simmons is an unrestricted free agent</a> after playing for the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers last season. After sitting out the entire 2021-22 season due to a back injury and mental health issues, the Aussie was traded to the Brooklyn Nets as part of a package for James Harden.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/los-angeles-clippers/clippers-news-ben-simmons-signs-with-clippers-after-nets-buyout">Simmons looked like a shell of his All-Star self with Brooklyn</a> as his offensive passivity continued to trend in the wrong direction. He averaged 6.5 points, 6.2 rebounds and 6.3 assists while attempting 5.3 shots per game over 90 appearances with the Nets. The former No. 1 pick continued to struggle after agreeing to a buyout and joining the Clippers midway through last season.</p><p>Simmons averaged 2.9 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists in 16.4 minutes per game over 18 appearances with Los Angeles. He attempted a career-low 6.6 shots per 36 minutes while shooting a career-low 43.4 percent from the field despite attempting 86.8 percent of his shots from within 10 feet.</p><p>Despite this, New York seemed to think the 6-foot-10 ball-handler could prove valuable in a reserve role. The Knicks made several additions to their bench this offseason, signing Guerschon Yabusele and Jordan Clarkson in free agency. Less than two years removed from a championship, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/brooklyn-nets/grading-nets-michael-porter-jr-cam-johnson-trade-nuggets">the team traded Porter Jr. and an unprotected 2032 first-round pick</a> to the Brooklyn Nets for Cam Johnson. While many view Johnson as an upgrade for Denver, he and Porter Jr. were <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6584218/2025/08/29/best-nba-wings-the-bounce/" rel="noopener">placed in the same tier in The Athletic’s Top-40 wing rankings</a>.</p><p>Zach Harper ranked Johnson at No. 18, while Porter Jr. was No. 20. Both players were part of a tier that included Brandon Miller, Trey Murphy III and Ausar Thompson.</p><p>“Johnson will have a career year with Nikola Jokić passing to him … and I’m interested to see what MPJ looks like without Jokić passing to him,” Harper wrote.</p><p>With two years and $79 million remaining on Porter Jr.’s contract, the Nuggets sought a cheaper alternative this offseason. He and Desmond Bane were the NBA’s only players to average at least 18 points on such efficiency.</p><p>The 29-year-old should fit like a glove next to Nikola Jokic as one of the NBA’s top spot-up shooters. He also flashed improved shot creation as a pick-and-roll ball-handler and isolation scorer with Brooklyn.</p><p>Meanwhile, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/brooklyn-nets/nets-news-michael-porter-reveals-plan-break-through-nuggets-plateau">Porter Jr. has also been one of the NBA’s top floor spacers</a> throughout his career. The 6-foot-10 forward averaged 17.1 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.6 assists on 49/40/78 shooting splits over his last three seasons. However, he did not see many opportunities as a pick-and-roll initiator or isolation scorer with Jokic and Jamal Murray dominating Denver’s offense.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/brooklyn-nets/nets-news-jordi-fernandez-teases-michael-porter-role-never-done-before">Porter Jr. will have an opportunity to show what he can do</a> in those areas with Brooklyn. Fernandez said the trade acquisition will have an expanded offensive role this season, which isn’t surprising given Brooklyn’s lack of shot-creation.</p><p>Should Porter Jr. excel amid the change in scenery, he could be a focal point of the Nets’ next iteration. As per team policy, the terms of the deal were not released. However, according to Hoopshype’s Michael Scotto, <a href="https://x.com/MikeAScotto/status/1965073743803474083" rel="noopener">it’s a</a> two-year, $12.5 million contract with a team option in year two.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/brooklyn-nets/grading-nets-grizzlies-ziaire-williams-trade">The Nets acquired Williams and a second-round pick</a> in a salary dump from the Memphis Grizzlies last offseason. Memphis had high hopes for the 6-foot-9 wing after selecting him with the No. 10 pick in the 2021 draft. However, he struggled offensively over three seasons with the team, averaging 7.5 points per game while shooting 30.1 percent from three.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nets-trade-acquisition-could-draw-interest-free-agency-improved-season">change of scenery served Williams well</a> last season, as he turned in a career-best campaign under first-year head coach Jordi Fernandez.</p><h2>Nets re-sign Ziaire Williams to multi-year contract as busy offseason nears close</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Ziaire-Williams-ii.jpg"><figcaption>Brad Penner-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Williams averaged 10.0 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.0 steals on 41/34/82 shooting splits over 63 appearances with 45 starts. After tweaking his three-point stroke last offseason, he shot 34.1 percent on 4.8 attempts per game, both career-highs. The Stanford product was also effective as a point-of-attack defender, <a href="https://cleaningtheglass.com/stats/player/4873#tab-defense_rebounding" rel="noopener">posting a</a> 1.7 steal percentage, which ranked in the 74th percentile among NBA wings, per CleaningTheGlass.</p><p>Williams will be part of a crowded Nets wing rotation featuring veteran trade acquisitions Michael Porter Jr., Terance Mann and Haywood Highsmith. Brooklyn also has rookie first-round pick Drake Powell alongside Dariq Whitehead, Jalen Wilson and Tyrese Martin.</p><p>Following Williams’ signing, the Nets have 19 players on standard contracts, including the unofficial signing of Ricky Council IV. NBA teams are allowed to carry 15 standard contracts during the regular season. Keon Johnson, Drew Timme, Wilson, Martin and Council are on partially or non-guaranteed contracts entering training camp.</p><p>The Nets have over $17 million in cap space remaining. Law has served as the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Director of Amateur Scouting since 2022 and won a championship with the team last season.</p><p>Before his time with the Thunder, he served as a scout with the Sacramento Kings for four seasons under general manager Monte McNair.</p><p>Law was a standout guard at Texas A&amp;M from 2003 to 2007, averaging 18.1 points, 3.3 rebounds and 5.0 assists on 50/46/78 shooting splits during his senior season. He was the No. 11 pick in the 2007 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks. The 23-year-old will hit unrestricted free agency next summer and have a no-trade clause during this season. The failed contract negotiation confirms what Brooklyn fans should have already known: the Nets do not consider Thomas a starting-caliber player, let alone a star.</p><p>There was substantial evidence to suggest this entering Thomas’ free agency. Despite numerous flashes of scoring brilliance, the 2021 first-round pick’s role remained in flux through his first two and a half seasons.</p><p>The Nets’ historic 2025 draft added to questions about Thomas’ future. Brooklyn used three first-round picks on lead ball-handlers, each of whom possesses excellent size and passing ability.</p><p>“It’s 0.5-second basketball, you catch and make a decision. You don’t hold the ball… It’s also where the NBA is going: guys who can play multiple positions, guard multiple positions, and make it hard on the defense,” general manager Sean Marks said when asked about his draft picks.</p><p>The quote was a clear indicator that Thomas — an undersized, shoot-first guard who has been a poor defender throughout his career — would not be a part of the team’s long-term plans.</p><p>Brooklyn’s negotiations with Thomas, who was reportedly seeking an annual salary approaching $30 million, reflected that reality. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Nets <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/46153839/sources-nets-cam-thomas-picks-6m-deal-fa-2026" rel="noopener">offered a</a> two-year, $30 million deal with a team option and a one-year, $9.5 million deal that required Thomas to waive his no-trade clause.</p><p>Thomas declined both, leaving millions on the table to retain the right to choose his next destination. With an inevitable breakup on the horizon, many are questioning: Did the two sides make a mistake?</p><h2>Did Nets or Cam Thomas make a mistake during failed contract negotiation?</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Cam-Thomas-2.jpg"><figcaption>Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>From Thomas’ perspective, it’s difficult to envision the decision not costing him money in the short term. He’ll have to secure a contract worth $24 million in 2026-27 to recoup the amount he left on the table.</p><p>Thomas may feel he can strategically increase his long-term value by hand-picking his next destination. However, passing up a $30 million contract is a risky proposition for a player who has not had a trade or free agent market thus far in his career. The Nets now have little incentive to offer Thomas a featured role this season, which could complicate his market next summer.</p><p>For Brooklyn, Thomas’ signing the qualifying offer is a poor outcome, as they lose control of him as an asset. Yet, Marks and Co. clearly felt that a contract paying the guard $20 million-plus would have negative value. The rest of the league appears to agree.</p><p>Unlike fellow restricted free agents Jonathan Kuminga and Josh Giddey, no team <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/brooklyn-nets/nets-rumors-cam-thomas-30-million-ask-no-interest">had reported interest in pursuing a sign-and-trade for Thomas</a>. Further, the NBA trended away from score-first guards this offseason. The Utah Jazz had to attach a second-round pick to Colin Sexton in a trade for Jusuf Nurkic, the Portland Trail Blazers salary-dumped Anfernee Simons, the Miami Heat acquired Norman Powell essentially for free, and Jordan Clarkson signed for the minimum.</p><p>In an NBA that is more talented and versatile than ever before, there isn’t a market for undersized scoring guards who don’t defend or elevate their teammates offensively. Thomas has done neither up to this point in his career. A contract paying him over $20 million annually would be a bet that he will reassess his approach to the game.</p><p>However, such a change would require a level of self-awareness that Thomas has yet to display. Earlier this offseason, longtime NBA writer and podcaster <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/brooklyn-nets/nets-news-cam-thomas-fires-nsfw-shot-zach-lowe-ball-hog-criticism">Zach Lowe relayed that the consensus around the league on Thomas</a> was “empty calories, ball hog.” The Nets guard’s response did not inspire confidence that he will reevaluate his playstyle.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">The consenus? He’ll likely begin the season with a starting role.
