Steph Curry needs a fully focused supporting cast to make another championship run. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-uncertain-about-jonathan-kumingas-starting-role">Warriors are worried about Jonathan Kuminga</a> but some other recent draft picks have been showing promise.</p><p>Developing third-year wing Moses Moody is poised to play a crucial role in how Kerr manages the Warriors’ rotations. Moody, who has shown flashes of brilliance, is <a href="https://x.com/anthonyVslater/status/1846410406618931651" rel="noopener">expected to be a significant factor</a> going by Kerr’s recent comments to The Athletic’s Anthony Slater.</p><p>“(Moody) has been great,” Kerr replied. “He has gotten so much better in so many ways.”</p><p>“We have always loved his character, his work ethic,” shared Kerr. “This is the most confidence I think he has played with. However, while watching the game, Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young noticed Buddy Hield’s seamless fit as the sixth-man for the Warriors.</p><p>“Buddy fits perfectly with the warriors!” the Hawks guard <a href="https://x.com/TheTraeYoung/status/1846379042519257497" rel="noopener">posted</a> on X, formerly Twitter.</p><h2><b>The Warriors are cruising</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Trae-Young-trying-to-get-around-Buddy-Hield.jpg"><figcaption>© Dale Zanine-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>While it’s still preseason, the Warriors seem to be in a good place. They <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-news-dallas-completes-klay-thompson-acquisition-in-historic-6-team-trade">lost Klay Thompson to the Dallas Mavericks</a> and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-warriors-trade-plans-after-lauri-markkanen-failure-emerges">whiffed on Lauri Markkanen</a>, but Stephen Curry did sign a one-year extension.</p><p>They also filled the gaps by leaning even harder on their jump-shooting.</p><p>This renewed focus on shooting and playmaking <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-complete-buddy-hield-sign-and-trade-with-76ers">netted the Warriors Buddy Hield</a> and Kyle Anderson. Moreover, they also signed De’Anthony Melton to spell Curry and provide some defense on the backcourt.</p><p>Moreover, in terms of shooting, Hield is a capable replacement for Thompson, and he may even be a better shooter at this stage of their careers. Thompson hasn’t defended at a high level since his Achilles and ACL injuries, and the Warriors didn’t sign Hield for his defense to begin with.</p><p>Hield is also a reliable decoy while Stephen Curry navigates through screens to look for an open spot behind the line. The defense will have to pick between Hield and Curry shooting, and most teams will let Hield shoot rather than the greatest three-point shooter of all time.</p><p>As a sixth man, Hield can also take on a heavier shooting load when Curry sits. However, without Curry, any competent NBA-level defense will load up on him, meaning his teammates like <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-steve-kerr-issues-andrew-wiggins-demand-klay-thompson-gone">Andrew Wiggins must also shoot more</a> to distribute the workload evenly.</p><p>This reliance on shooting will also require the Warriors to speed their game up, and they hope Melton, Anderson, and Draymond Green should provide enough defense to get them consistent stops to spark fast-breaks.</p><p>Likewise, they’ll have to rely on their center rotation of Trayce Jackson-Davis and Kevon Looney to gobble up defensive rebounds and start the offense.</p><h2><b>Possible problems</b></h2><p>The only problem with this approach might surface in the playoffs, or even before then. For instance, the Warriors might have to win shootouts with other teams, since they might <a href="https://sports.yahoo.com/golden-state-warriors-2024-25-season-preview-is-steph-currys-supporting-cast-good-enough-142816317.html" rel="noopener">not have enough two-way guys</a> to wreak havoc on defense.</p><p>As constructed, the Warriors remain a dangerous team who can shoot the lights out and run other teams off the floor.</p><p>However, when the game slows down in the postseason and the shooting drops off, the lack of a difference-making player like a Markkanen or a Paul George might rear its ugly head.</p><p>Trae Young might be right about Buddy Hield’s fit with the Warriors, but is it enough to put them over contenders like the Minnesota Timberwolves, Denver Nuggets, or Oklahoma City Thunder?</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The stars of both teams (Stephen Curry, LeBron James, and Anthony Davis) were all active for the night, which should provide some major entertainment for fans regardless of rooting interest. But for the players themselves, defending players of that caliber is rarely fun — which was evident in the way <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-steve-kerr-reveals-klay-thompson-plan-for-buddy-hield">Buddy Hield reacted to a bonkers shot from James</a>.</p><p>With the shot clock winding down with a little over a minute to go in the first half, James looked to bail out a Lakers offense that was going nowhere by drawing a foul on Buddy Hield, who was closing out hard on his jumpshot. This was the case even though Curry did not have the best of nights from the field (6-18 for 16 points). He now writes about sports instead as a form of therapy.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-in-season-tournament-all-tournament-team-lebron-james-tyrese-haliburton">NBA introduced the In-Season Tournament</a> (since renamed to the NBA Cup) last season with the intention of drumming up excitement early on in the season. Most teams sleepwalk to begin the year and err on the side of caution, since they know that the season is won in a three-month stretch from April to June, not in November. And for the most part, the tournament did its job. But for Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, he has his worries about how the NBA’s regular-season schedule is set up.</p><p>While the Warriors head coach praised the league’s progressiveness, he believes that <a href="https://twitter.com/mcten/status/1846354884180037872" rel="noopener">reducing the number of games</a> in the regular season is still the way to go if they intend to improve the product’s overall quality.</p><p>“I am all for experimentation. I’m also for a 75-game season but they’re never going to do that. But what I worry about is, the way we play our season now, we basically have a game every other day. All NBA Cup games, apart from the Final of the competition, count towards the regular-season record. But for Kerr, it’s the additional travel to Las Vegas that could prove worrisome.</p><p>“The travel for the final four teams, it’s a lot. I like what the league has done. … But I think the downside is the extra game,” Kerr said. “The extra travel seemed to hurt both of the Lakers and Pacers last year.”</p><h2><b>Taking a look at the Warriors’ NBA Cup draw</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Steve-Kerr-and-Stephen-Curry-with-the-Warriors.jpg"></figure><p>Steve Kerr may not have to worry about the additional travel that comes with booking a spot in the final four of the NBA Cup given how difficult the Warriors’ group is. The Dubs <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-news-fans-go-crazy-over-tough-group-of-death-nba-cup">belong in the group of death</a>, as they are bunched in with four other playoff hopefuls in the Dallas Mavericks, Denver Nuggets, New Orleans Pelicans, and Memphis Grizzlies. The Warriors could just as easily go 0-4 as they can 4-0.</p><p>Last season, the Warriors gave fans perhaps the most exciting games of the NBA In-Season Tournament’s group stage. They went 2-2, with all games being decided by six points or fewer. In fact, it was during the Dubs’ In-Season Tournament clash against the Minnesota Timberwolves where Draymond Green put Rudy Gobert in a choke hold.</p><p>Green was also at the center of a bang-bang basket interference call during the Warriors’ tournament win over the Oklahoma City Thunder. However, before the game started, Steve Kerr pivoted the conversation to Curry’s time spent with LeBron James on Team USA during the summer of 2024.</p><h2><b>Kerr spoke highly of the Warriors star’s paring with James</b></h2><p>Curry and James were two of Team USA’s top contributors during the Paris Games and helped lead the team to its fourth consecutive gold medal. Both stars have expressed their enjoyment in playing with each other, and Steve Kerr’s <a href="http://Steve%20Kerr%20on%20LeBron%20James%20and%20Steph%20Curry%20playing%20together%20this%20summer%20on%20Team%20USA:%20%E2%80%9CIt%20was%20a%20bromance.%E2%80%9D" rel="noopener">description of the pairing</a> was on point:</p><p>“It was a bromance,” Kerr said about Curry and James’ tandem, per Jovan Buha of The Athletic.</p><p>Kerr’s take on the two stars is fitting, given how much praise <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-news-lebron-james-response-joining-steph-curry-kevin-durant-team-usa">James gave Curry and Kevin Durant</a> in a reflection of their time together:</p><p>“Should’ve, could’ve, would’ve, but we didn’t [lose]. Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry played together on the Warriors for three seasons, winning two championships. He has words and will travel, just not on the court.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Steph Curry’s supporting cast took a big hit this offseason as the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-third-different-starting-lineup-highlights-need-change">currently rotation-shuffling Golden State Warriors</a> lost Splash Brother Klay Thompson to the Dallas Mavericks. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-brandin-podziemski-suffers-broken-nose-regular-season-dawns">Thompson’s replacement Brandin Podziemski</a> now has a broken nose. Draymond Green still graces the locker room but Andrew Wiggins has been noticeably absent all too often over the past 12 months.</p><p>Wiggins has been fighting an illness but is itching to return despite knowing there will be <a href="https://twitter.com/anthonyVslater/status/1846273638762533257" rel="noopener">rough times working back into shape.</a></p><p>“It was tough, you lose it fast. I’ve been working hard, doing a lot of extra stuff to get my conditioning back, so I’m excited for tonight,” Wiggins explained (h/t Anthony Slater of The Athletic). “I’ll know tonight once I get going…(Practice runs) felt really good, it felt like I had a really good summer of work.”</p><p>Wiggins was a series-changing piece during the Warriors 2022 run to the NBA Finals. Golden State got a championship out of a big move to bring on the wingman drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves. Coach Steve Kerr needs a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-andrew-wiggins-returns-to-practice">new level of commitment from Wiggins</a> to get Curry one last shot at a legacy-defining title run.</p><p>Kerr’s request can even be <a href="https://www.nbcsportsbayarea.com/nba/golden-state-warriors/andrew-wiggins-expectations-steve-kerr/1791782/" rel="noopener">measured on the stat sheet</a>, per an interview with NBC’s Kerith Burke.</p><p>“To me, I’ve already told him: six three-pointers a game,” Kerr said. “He is a really good three-point shooter. It was down a little bit last year, but…I want a lot of threes and I want a lot of attacks to the rim. He shot 80-plus percent from the foul line in the second half of the year last year. He looks really comfortable in every aspect of the game. And let’s face it, with Klay gone, we need him to step up and be our second scorer after Steph. As sad as it is, I’m hopeful his father’s death brings a little peace,” Kerr shared. “I know, from experience, over time, that does happen.”</p><p>“If Wiggs has a sense of freedom and some peace of mind and his family behind him, which he always does, he’s an unbelievable human being and an incredible athlete, and he’s 29. Luckily for the Warriors, he shouldn’t miss any time in the regular, as he’s set to play a bigger role this year as the potential backup guard.</p><p>For Podziemski, whatever role he plays for the Warriors, he wants to be able to do it to his fullest, without any restrictions to his minutes.</p><p>“I’m not a big fan of a minutes restriction,” Podziemski said. “If I’m healthy to play, I want to play as much as I can. I just always want to be available, so not being able to play tomorrow kind of sucks. Even though it’s preseason. His defection to the Dallas Mavericks is already looming large for the Warriors, but more so off the court than on it given the summer additions of De’Anthony Melton and Buddy Hield, not to mention the coaching staff’s desire for this team to rely more than ever on threes.</p><p>Golden State is launching <a href="https://www.nba.com/stats/teams/traditional?PerMode=Per100Possessions&amp;Season=2024-25&amp;SeasonType=Pre%20Season&amp;dir=A&amp;sort=FG3A" rel="noopener">43 triples per 100 possessions</a> in the preseason, fourth-most in the league and a number that would’ve tied the Boston Celtics for first a year ago, per NBA.com/stats. The Warriors have heated up after a putrid performance from deep in their exhibition opener, too, entering Tuesday’s action shooting 40.5%, the best mark in basketball.</p><p>What’s been so refreshing about Golden State’s full-scale embrace of threes is that most of its attempts have come within structured flow of the offense. Even contested triples have largely been quality looks for the Dubs so far, following multiple passes, cuts and screens that at least briefly free up shooters beyond the arc.</p><p>“What I like about this team is I think, even though we’ve lost Klay, we have more shooting depth,” <a href="https://x.com/i/bookmarks?post_id=1844246144995766617">Kerr said</a> following last week’s win in Sacramento. “We have more guys who can step in from one night to the next and make threes.
