And, according to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/bucks-news-debunking-giannis-antetokounmpo-trade-rumors">ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel</a>, they’re not too keen on doing that.</p><p>“There is no clear path to the Warriors potentially pursuing the Bucks star, as doing so would almost certainly require them to move Butler or Green for cap reasons,” Siegel wrote. “Golden State won’t be moving either star, barring a seismic event or change.”</p><p>Then again, the Warriors changed course last season, when they started the year with a 12-3 record and then cratered. Less than two weeks before training camp, Kuminga’s upcoming season remains uncertain as to whether he’ll stay with Golden State for one more season, work out a sign-and-trade, or agree to a long-term extension.</p><p>Amidst the standoff between Kuminga and the Warriors, Butler wants to know <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2ynUdjR9KE" rel="noopener">what the plan is</a> for his team’s future, according to NBC Sports Bay Area’s Dalton Johnson, he said, per the Dub Talk podcast.</p><p>“I can confidently say that Jimmy Butler has also reached out to the team and been like, ‘What’s going on here? I just want to know the plan,’” Johnson said on the podcast. “And of course, Steph [Curry], Draymond, Jimmy, they’re in the loop, I understand that. But I think Jimmy, as someone who came on last year and kind of showed, ‘All right, you took care of me, all the drama’s done, all the Miami stuff, it’s just basketball for me. I’m all about basketball. When I’m on the contract for you, it’s about basketball.’</p><p>“And now I think he’s saying, ‘Hey, show me that it’s all about basketball. We have two weeks until training camp. So either just pay him or move him. However, if the Warriors plan to keep Kuminga in hopes of moving him in a trade at some point throughout next season, he would have <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/46210422/inside-warriors-stalemate-jonathan-kuminga" rel="noopener">the power to veto a trade</a>, as ESPN’s Anthony Slater and Shams Charania noted.</p><p>“Kuminga’s greatest leverage is the one-year, $8 million qualifying offer, attached to an inherent no-trade clause,” Slater and Charania said. “As the summer has dragged on and the discomfort in these negotiations has grown further, Kuminga has warmed further to the idea. The decision to sign it could very well play out up to the Oct. 1 deadline unless either side caves.</p><p>“The financial drawbacks are straightforward. The Warriors were unwilling to engage in potential sign-and-trade opportunities and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/siegels-scoop-jonathan-kuminga-josh-giddey-follow-cam-thomas-qualifying-offer">have held firm on their offer</a>, as per ClutchPoints’ NBA insider Brett Siegel, and the situation is getting close to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/golden-state-warriors/warriors-rumors-why-jonathan-kuminga-hasnt-accepted-organizational-burning-qualifying-offer">Kuminga signing his one-year qualifying offer</a>.</p><p>But a new wrinkle in the Jonathan Kuminga drama could potentially lead to the former lottery pick signing a longer contract with the Warriors. The Warriors <a href="https://x.com/ClutchPoints/status/1968087089628553518" rel="noopener">have reportedly offered</a> Kuminga a three-year deal worth $75.2 million, with a team option after the second year, as per Anthony Slater of ESPN. Kuminga is reportedly seeking a player option after year two instead of a team option.</p><p>Should Kuminga end up signing his qualifying offer instead, he would hit unrestricted free agency after the 2025-26 season. Originally selected by the Warriors with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, the Warriors’ handing of Kuminga’s development has emerged as a point of issue among the fanbase.</p><p>This past season, Kuminga was called into duty during the NBA Playoffs against both the Houston Rockets and Minnesota Timberwolves. Although the Warriors were ultimately eliminated in five games, Kuminga showed a glimpse of the player he could potentially be with consistent playing time.</p><p>Across eight playoff games, including one start, Kuminga averaged a playoff career-high 15.3 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists with splits of 48.4 percent shooting from the field, 40 percent shooting from the three-point line and 71 percent shooting from the free-throw line.</p><p>Kuminga is still only 22-years-old and developing as a player. He’s averaged double figures in scoring in each of the last two regular seasons, while shooting better than 45 percent from the field. As it turns out, Bob Myers, the team president back then, and Mike Dunleavy, the current GM who was then the assistant GM, had collectively given the green light for Wagner.</p><p>However, despite the figures preferring Wagner alongside multiple other members of the coaching staff, Lacob remained firm in his support for JK, which has been true ever since. Two seasons back, Lacob was unwilling to include Kuminga in a proposed trade for Alex Caruso, who was playing for the Chicago Bulls back then.</p><p>Further, Lacob was reportedly “glowing” about Kuminga’s performance back in May after he finished as the team’s leading scorer in the second-round playoff series against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The two were then seen attending a Golden State Valkyries game together, where Lacob had asked Kuminga to keep an “open mind about a future together.”</p><p>This suggests that the current stalemate has come despite the constant support the Warriors owner has shown the 22-year-old. But to this point, he has had little leverage to do anything about it. Now, though, he is using his status as an RFA to get what he wants: either a lot of money long-term or unrestricted free agency next offseason.</p><p>Neither of those options is particularly appealing to the Warriors, who would prefer to sign Kuminga to a lower-cost and more tradeable contract. That is why ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania believes that a split<a href="https://www.hoopshype.com/story/sports/nba/rumors/2025/09/16/shams-charania-warriors-jonathan-kuminga-know-best-case-scenario-is-a-divorce/86176398007/" rel="noopener"> is coming at some point.</a></p><p>“I spoke to a source this morning that said this is essentially a situation where both sides know that likely the best-case scenario is a divorce eventually,” Charania said [h/t HoopsHype]. “But in the short term, it might be best for both sides to stay together for the kids — and the kids being a betterment for the team, allowing both sides to get an opportunity to see, can we figure this out? Can this work at least this upcoming season? And if not, it’s a tradable contract that they can trade, and eventually, he hits unrestricted free agency next offseason.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/siegels-scoop-jonathan-kuminga-josh-giddey-follow-cam-thomas-qualifying-offer">ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel</a> previously reported that among the trio of RFA holdouts at the time (Kuminga, Quentin Grimes, and Josh Giddey), Kuminga was the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/golden-state-warriors/warriors-rumors-why-jonathan-kuminga-hasnt-accepted-organizational-burning-qualifying-offer">most likely to accept his qualifying</a> offer, which is worth nearly $8 million.</p><p>Siegel said that Kuminga and Golden State, which recently <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/golden-state-warriors/warriors-rumors-jonathan-kuminga-offered-million-souped-up-counter-declined">offered a $75.2 million deal</a>, have been “far apart” in negotiations all summer.</p><p>“This is not only due to Golden State’s unwillingness to adjust its offer but also in large part because Kuminga doesn’t envision a future with the Warriors after their ongoing, failed contract discussions over the last two years,” Siegel wrote.</p><p>There remains some sliver of a chance that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/golden-state-warriors/warriors-rumors-renewed-efforts-jonathan-kuminga-deal">Kuminga will sign an extension</a> worth $25 million or more per year, though Kuminga signing his QO would end any and all extension talks and ensure that he could hit free agency next season. The meeting was attended by general manager Mike Dunleavy, Lacob, the player’s agent, Aaron Turner, and Kuminga himself, according to Anthony Slater and Shams Charania of ESPN.</p><p>“Do you even want me here?” the Warriors star reportedly asked Lacob after the owner questioned Kuminga if he wanted to return to the Warriors.</p><p>Of course, this dialogue between the player and team comes after Golden State offered Kuminga a two-year, $45 million contract that would theoretically make Kuminga the fourth-highest-paid player on a roster that includes three future Hall of Famers: Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Jimmy Butler.</p><p>That represents more money than what he would have gotten in the short term had the Warriors accepted the Sacramento Kings’ or the Phoenix Suns’ sign-and-trade offers. Kuminga’s agent, Turner, has delivered the latest proposals from the front office after a week of increased negotiations.”</p><p>Kuminga and Turner met with general manager Mike Dunleavy and owner Joe Lacob during NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, but were unable to reach an agreement.
