Indiana is clearly using the Haliburton absence as the prime defense of this move.</p><p>Via The Athletic: “However, Indiana was already facing the likelihood next season of playing without Haliburton, who tore his Achilles about seven minutes into Game 7 of the finals, and decided it didn’t want to “overpay” for Turner now, a team source said. The Pacers had signaled a willingness to pay the luxury tax as the offseason neared, but changed that stance in the wake of Haliburton’s injury.”</p><p>The Athletic also got a Pacers source to explain it shouldn’t have been surprising that Turner went elsewhere.</p><p>“It’s not really all that stunning when you think about it,” said the Pacers source, who added that the team doesn’t plan to tank next year with Haliburton sidelined. “It’s a bigger deal because it’s Milwaukee — if Myles had gone to Denver or the Clippers, it would be (perceived) totally different as far as (the Pacers) are concerned.”</p><p>This outlook feels a bit naive. While Turner going to the Bucks hurts more due to the rivalry between the two teams, losing Turner due to a refusal to pay the tax once again leaves a bad taste in the mouth no matter what. It’s not like Turner is leaving for over $30 million per season on a truly exorbitant contract. $27 million a year is a reasonable deal for a 29-year-old who just played a key role in an NBA Finals run after years of trade rumors, even if he struggled in said Finals.</p><p>Haliburton will be back in 2026-27, and now the Pacers will need to find a new long-term starting center to pair with him. However, Fischer notes that the Indiana Pacers loom as a suitor after losing Myles Turner to the Milwaukee Bucks.</p><p>Los Angeles has been scouring the market for multiple center upgrades. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/los-angeles-lakers/sources-brook-lopez-lakers-top-free-agency-target-deandre-ayton">Brook Lopez was once thought to be the top target</a>, but he wound up going to the rival Los Angeles Clippers after Ayton became available. The immediate assumption was Ayton would be ticketed to the Lakers once he officially clears waives on Wednesday at 5 p.m. ET, but nothing is set in stone just yet.</p><p>Ayton, the No. 1 pick in 2018, comes with some baggage after his stint with the Portland Trail Blazers was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/nba-rumors-brutal-deandre-ayton-blazers-revelations-lakers-pause">reportedly marred with tardiness and a bad attitude</a>. Does that open the door for Ayton to head to Indiana? There have been a few instances of players, such as Kobe Bryant, returning to action after about eight months. However, Bryant, already nearing the end of his career, never looked the same after the biggest injury of his career. Others, like Kevin Durant, who also suffered his Achilles tear in a Finals game, played his first game post-injury about a year and a half after he went down in the Finals. He notably returned to form relatively quickly after recovering and was considered one of the best players in the world within a year of his return.</p><p>With the timetable largely being unknown at this time, and with free agency about a week away, the Pacers, much like the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/indiana-pacers/pacers-news-tyrese-haliburton-exit-highlights-jayson-tatum-similarity-beyond-injury">Boston Celtics with Jayson Tatum</a> and Milwaukee Bucks with Damian Lillard, have some tough decisions to make, and they have to make them quickly. Will that change if the Pacers are not a favorite in the Eastern Conference? If it does not, how much of a penalty is Indiana willing to pay? Because of a change in the CBA this offseason, Indiana will pay a less punitive tax penalty if it goes over the cap by $11.4 million or less. The Iowa State point guard was not as popular as top prospects like Anthony Edwards or LaMelo Ball. However, his skillset was highly valued by teams across the league. According to Carlisle, the Mavericks <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45493117/how-rick-carlisle-impacts-tyrese-haliburton-indiana-pacers" rel="noopener">attempted to build a trade package</a> featuring Brunson and their draft picks to move up.</p><p>According to ESPN’s Jamal Collier and Tim McMahon, Dallas tried to trade with every team for a shot at Haliburton before the Sacramento Kings selected him at No. 12.</p><p>“We tried like hell to get him and move up; we just couldn’t do it,” Carlisle said before the start of the Finals. “When I tell you that Mark Cuban tried everything. When Mark puts his mind to something, he can usually figure something out.”</p><p>Despite Cuban’s best efforts, the Mavericks were unable to get a deal done. It may have been for the best, though. Brunson developed into a capable backcourt player alongside Luka Doncic. However, Dallas did not want to give him the extension he asked for, and the young guard signed with the New York Knicks.</p><p>Carlisle stayed with the Mavericks for one more season before heading back to the Pacers in 2021. After being so high on Haliburton, he got the chance to coach the young star when Indiana traded for him. Three years later, Carlisle and Haliburton have the Pacers two wins away from the team’s first championship in franchise history.</p><p>Carlisle has developed many point guards throughout his career, but Brunson and Haliburton might be his two biggest triumphs. Both guards made All-NBA teams this season, leading their teams deep into the postseason.</p><p>After Jayson Tatum’s injury, the Eastern Conference is as wide open as it has ever been. However, the Pacers and Knicks have a chance to dominate for years to come.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/indiana-pacers/pacers-news-rick-carlisle-haliburton-game-winner-plan">Carlisle has been a big supporter of Haliburton’s game</a>, and heaped praise on the Pacers’ leader throughout the postseason. He even compared his young star to Jason Kidd. The Hall of Fame guard helped him grow into the coach that he is now.</p><p>“What I learned my first year in Dallas was to give J-Kidd the ball and get out of the way, let him run the show, let him run the team,” Carlisle said before the start of the NBA Finals. “Tyrese, very similar situation, but didn’t take half a season to figure it out.</p><p>“The situation in Dallas with Luka was the same. It’s pretty clear, when you have a player of that kind of magnitude, that kind of presence, that kind of knowledge, vision and depth, you got to let them do what they do.”</p><p>Carlisle’s strategy has worked, and he is close to his second championship. Just one year after shocking many and battling the Boston Celtics in the 2024 Eastern Conference Finals, the Pacers have proven their championship pedigree by running things back and becoming one of the final two teams standing.</p><p>Tyrese Haliburton and Pascal Siakam have put Indiana in a position where they could realistically claim their first championship in team history.</p><p>Although the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/oklahoma-city-thunder/thunder-news-the-weak-link-secret-historically-elite-defense">Oklahoma City Thunder have been the best team in the NBA</a> all year, they are still a young and inexperienced team. That is where the Pacers’ experience could factor into this championship series, as Haliburton, Siakam, and even Myles Turner have been in the league for years.</p><p>No matter what the result is — championship or no championship — the Pacers will enter the summer with key questions to answer about their roster. <a href="https://www.facebook.com/IndianaPacersNation/posts/the-indiana-pacers-havent-paid-the-luxury-tax-in-20-yearsnow-theyre-ready-to-bre/1069928118342201/" rel="noopener">Indiana has not paid the luxury tax in 20 years</a>, which has raised obvious questions around the league about the futures of Turner, who will be a free agent, and other talents like Obi Toppin, Aaron Nesmith, and Andrew Nembhard.</p><p>Now that the Pacers have emerged as a true NBA championship contender, owner Herb Simons may be more willing than ever to <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0pe4YsI8qY&amp;t=1240s" rel="noopener">spend a little extra</a> and keep this team together.</p><p>“From what I am told, the hope and belief and whatever is that ownership will green light them going a little bit into the tax for a little while,” Brian Windhorst of ESPN said on his Hoop Collective podcast. This comes in the wake of reports surfacing around the trade deadline suggesting that Indiana would need to move contracts in the offseason to make room for a new deal with Turner, who the Pacers hope to retain.</p><p>Not even factoring in the Finals and what could potentially happen, the Pacers will enter the offseason with 11 players under contract, including Tony Bradley with his $2.9 million team option. Turner, Thomas Bryant, Isaiah Jackson, and James Johnson will be the organization’s only free agents.</p><p>Right now, the Pacers will carry an active roster payroll of $167.9 million into the summer after the NBA Finals, meaning that a new, long-term contract to retain Turner would push the Pacers dangerously close to the tax line.</p><p>While Indiana has historically done everything it can to dodge the tax, including this season, it’s obviously not a bad idea for Simons to pay up and simply keep his team together, assuming that’s what the front office is asking. It makes even more sense to run things back, win or lose in the Finals since the Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks are expected to take a step back during the 2025-26 season in the East.</p><p>The Pacers have proven to be an elite team with championship potential. But, as is the case with almost every team, one question remains: what’s next?</p><p>While the Pistons won 44 games and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/detroit-pistons/pistons-news-jb-bickerstaff-breaks-silence-tough-ending-memorable-season">gave the New York Knicks almost all they could handle</a> in Detroit’s first playoff series since 2019, losing again in the first round might not be satisfactory next season. So what’s next for the Pistons? Well, if they had it their way, they would like to sign a versatile big man.</p><p>Specifically, Detroit is reportedly interested in two big men who have proven to be highly effective as perimeter shooters: the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/tag/naz-reid">Minnesota Timberwolves’ Naz Reid</a> and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/players/baff0a14/myles-turner">Indiana Pacers’ Myles Turner.</a> It’s just <a href="https://marcstein.substack.com/p/saturday-best-all-the-latest-nba?utm_source=post-email-title&amp;publication_id=392205&amp;post_id=164887336&amp;utm_campaign=email-post-title&amp;isFreemail=false&amp;r=39f60&amp;triedRedirect=true&amp;utm_medium=email" rel="noopener">going to be pretty</a> tough to land either one of them.</p><p>“Reid has a $15 million player option for next season that he must exercise or decline by June 29,” NBA insider Marc Stein wrote on ‘The Stein Line’ newsletter. “The Timberwolves have made it known they have strong interest in retaining Reid and there’s another notable obstacle for the Pistons here: Even if Reid makes it to the open market, Detroit won’t have substantial salary cap room to try to outright sign him away from the Wolves if it is also hoping to re-sign sharpshooter Malik Beasley and/or<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/detroit-pistons/pistons-rumors-detroit-wants-retain-dennis-schroder-free-agency"> veteran guard Dennis Schröder</a>. (Tim Hardaway Jr. is another Pistons free agent-to-be.)</p><p>“Turner, meanwhile, is widely expected to re-sign with the only team he has ever known after his contributions to Indiana’s second successive trip to the Eastern Conference finals in his 10th season as a Pacer.”</p><p>As it stands now, with active contracts and cap holds, the Pistons are projected to have $185 million on the books next season, which is more than $30 million over the salary cap. While <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/indiana-pacers/pacers-news-myles-turner-free-agency-decision-pacers-trade-market-plans">Turner’s upcoming free agency raises questions about his Pacers future</a>, Kevin Pelton of ESPN labels the clear fits for the star on other teams.</p><p>While Turner will become an unrestricted free agent, it seems more likely than not that he will find a way to stay in Indiana with the team desperately needing his abilities as shown in back-to-back Eastern Conference Finals runs.</p><p>However, Pelton speaks about the situation around the team and Turner, and how the Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45320766/nba-free-agent-rankings-futures-lebron-turner-more-stars" rel="noopener">are the two teams with the best fits.</a></p><p>“The Pacers will want to be careful with Turner’s starting salary,” Pelton wrote. “Indiana will enter free agency about $20 million from the projected luxury tax line with 12 players under contract, and Turner should command more than that after making $19.9 million this season.”</p><p>“Possible fits: Turner has featured in trade rumors so long that he has been linked to just about every team in need of a starting center,” Pelton continued. “A sign-and-trade would be complicated for the Warriors and the Lakers, but both franchises are clear fits in the unlikely event the Pacers and Turner can’t strike a deal.”</p><h2><b>Myles Turner has an ‘indispensable’ role with the Pacers </b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Myles-Turner-and-Tyrese-Haliburton-on-May-25-2025.jpg"><figcaption>Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>With the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/top-25-nba-free-agents-2025-nba-offseason">Pacers’ big man in Turner being one of the top free agents</a> going into the offseason, many teams could use his talents, especially the Lakers, who have been trying to find a center to play with Luka Doncic and LeBron James. Still, Turner’s role with Indiana is seen as “indispensable.”</p><p>“Here’s where this year’s free agency really comes up short,” Pelton wrote. “Turner is arguably the only quality starter available who has never been an All-Star, and he is still in the middle of his career at age 29. Turner’s indispensable role for an Indiana team that has reached the past two conference finals gives him significant leverage as an unrestricted free agent.”</p><p>Pelton would get a quote from an NBA scout who basically had the strong prediction that the Pacers have no choice but to keep Turner because there isn’t a “replacement” for him.</p><p>“With how the playoffs have gone,” a scout said to ESPN. “He’s cemented his place there. Apparently, he hasn’t been in rumors like everyone has seen, and general manager Chad Buchanan spoke up for Turner regarding all the talk around him <a href="https://athlonsports.com/nba/indiana-pacers/indiana-pacers-gm-chad-buchana-myles-turner-rumors-free-agency" rel="noopener">being on the trade block</a>.</p><p>“It’s almost comical,” Buchanan said. “I’m reading the Myles Turner trade rumors out there at the trade deadline, and I’m just [asking], ‘Where in the world do people get this information?’ Sometimes we as a front office sit back and laugh because it’s unreal where some of this information comes from.”</p><p>From the sound of it, the Pacers weren’t trying to trade Turner at the deadline, and let them tell it, they probably haven’t been trying to trade him at all. Most teams in the league are looking for a talent at the center position like Turner who can stretch the floor and anchor the defense, and that’s probably something that the Pacers value.</p><p>Turner is having a good season for the Pacers and he’s helped them rise in the standings after they had a slow start. He will be a free agent after this season, so it will be interesting to see if the Pacers re-sign him or will another team look to lure him away.</p><h2>Myles Turner an integral part of Pacers success</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Myles-Turner.jpg"><figcaption>Trevor Ruszkowski-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Despite <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/indiana-pacers/sources-pacers-discuss-myles-turner-trade-talks-but-theres-a-catch">Myles Turner always being in trade rumors</a>, he is still a big part of what the Pacers are doing and why they’ve been successful over the past month. Turner missed a few games, but he recently returned and had two solid performances against the Memphis Grizzlies and Los Angeles Clippers, Tyrese Haliburton spoke about the importance of having Turner on the court.</p><p>“He’s a very integral part of what we do and why our offense has been so good over these last couple years,” Haliburton said. “To get him back really helps.”</p><p>The Pacers have had a strong few weeks, and they’re currently fourth in the Eastern Conference. They were once near the bottom of the standings after having a slow start, but the whole team has turned it around and is looking like the same squad that made it to the Eastern Conference Finals last season.</p><p>The Pacers will probably just be focusing on what the rest of the season looks like for them, but the future of Turner will be a big topic during the offseason.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

However, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/hornets-news-failed-mark-williams-lakers-trade-leads-charlotte-dispute">Los Angeles reportedly discovered several red flags during Williams’ medical assessment</a>, prompting them to pull out of the agreement with Charlotte.</p><p>Alex Len, who was traded from the Sacramento Kings to the Washington Wizards and later waived, has now become a leading free-agent target after initial reports hinted at a near-complete deal with the Indiana Pacers that ultimately fell apart.</p><p>Initially expected to join the Indiana Pacers, that plan <a href="https://x.com/KeithSmithNBA/status/1889102975164879190" rel="noopener">appears to have fallen through</a>, leaving Len open for signing.</p><p>The Indiana Pacers have instead inked former Duke standout and No. 3-overall draft pick Jahlil Okafor to a 10-day deal, according to league sources.</p><p>Len’s NBA career has been a long and winding road since he was selected with the fifth-overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft by the Phoenix Suns. For the Pacers, who have climbed to fourth place in the Eastern Conference after a shaky start to the season, opting not to sign Len might have been a missed chance to improve their roster.</p><p>Indiana has leaned on its dynamic backcourt, but at times, the team’s interior defense and rebounding have shown vulnerabilities. The No. 3-overall pick in 2015, Okafor has posted strong G League numbers, averaging 18.6 points and nearly 10 rebounds per game in the regular season.</p><p>His signing could add a different dynamic to the team as Okafor brings the potential of an offensively focused big man in contrast to the defense-first role Len might have played.</p><p>Ultimately, the Pacers may have passed on signing Len to better align with the team’s needs and future direction. While Len’s veteran presence could have added value, Okafor’s scoring potential as a big man might fit more with their current focus.</p><p>For <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-center-options-after-rescinded-mark-williams-trade">the Lakers, the focus now shifts to the buyout market for reinforcements</a>, as their only true centers are Jaxson Hayes, Christian Koloko, and Trey Jemison III. The NBA trade deadline for the Pacers will once again involve Myles Turner, but not in the way you might think. With Myles Turner set to hit unrestricted free agency in the offseason, the Pacers will obviously look to re-sign him, and that could mean freeing up potential cap space by trading of <a href="https://marcstein.substack.com/p/lots-more-nba-trade-talk?utm_source=post-email-title&amp;publication_id=392205&amp;post_id=156104802&amp;utm_campaign=email-post-title&amp;isFreemail=false&amp;r=39f60&amp;triedRedirect=true&amp;utm_medium=email" rel="noopener">some their wing depth</a>, as per longtime NBA insider Marc Stein.</p><p>Stein reports that the Pacers could opt to trade someone like Bennedict Mathurin either by the NBA trade deadline, or closer to the NBA Draft, in order to make it easier to re-sign Myles Turner in NBA free agency.</p><p>There’s of course the possibility that re-signing Turner could prove too costly, in which case, it’s no surprise that his name has popped up once again in trade rumors. The Pacers have reportedly <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sources-pacers-discuss-myles-turner-trade-talks-but-theres-a-catch">fielded calls from interested teams</a> about Turner’s potential availability this deadline, as per ClutchPoints NBA insider Brett Siegel. Siegel reports that the Pacers aren’t actively looking to trade Turner, and don’t wish to, but that they haven’t exactly dissuaded interested teams.</p><p>One team that has popped up in terms of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-trade-target-is-myles-turner-actually-available">trade interest in Turner is the Los Angeles Lakers</a>, as per ClutchPoints’ Lakers insider Anthony Irwin. Irwin reports that the Lakers have turned their attention towards Turner as the deadline approaches, and with the asking price for either Jonas Valanciunas and Nikola Vucevic being too high for their liking.</p><h2><b>Myles Turner’s impact with Pacers</b></h2><p>One of the biggest reasons why the Pacers should not trade Myles Turner is because they don’t have much center depth in the wake of the season-ending injuries to both Isaiah Jackson and James Wiseman. If the Pacers aren’t getting a starting caliber center in a deal, it isn’t really worth it for them.</p><p>With Turner forming a sold frontcourt duo alongside Thomas Bryant, the Pacers have re-ignited their season and jumped up in the Eastern Conference standings. They’ve gone 10-2 in the month of January and currently sit in fifth place in the East standings at 25-20. It’s a solid turnaround for a team that got off to a disappointing start to the 2024-25 season.</p><p>Turner has been among the best centers in the league this season, and will surely be one of the top free agents on the market this offseason.</p><p>He’s appeared in 43 games this season, at a little over 31 minutes per game. He’s averaging 15.6 points, 6.8 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.9 blocked shots with splits of 48 percent shooting from the field, 40 percent shooting from the three-point line and 75.4 percent shooting from the free-throw line.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

However, despite their recent success, the Pacers are rumored to be eyeing the trade market, with center Myles Turner potentially being available.</p><p>With just over one week until the 2025 NBA trade deadline, the Pacers are potentially <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CszJyN_GJ34&amp;t=2272s" rel="noopener">“sneakily” open to trading</a> Turner, Jovan Buha of The Athletic reported. The 10th-year big man is not actively being shopped but is a name Buha claimed Indiana is open to discussing.</p><p>“I heard from a league source that Indiana might, kinda sneakily, be open to trading Myles Turner,” Buha said on YouTube.</p><p>Buha, a Los Angeles Lakers beat reporter, gave the information on Turner based on the Lakers’ pursuit of a trade at the upcoming deadline. Teams around the league are aware that Los Angeles is in pursuit of a center after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-news-anthony-davis-doubles-down-center-addition-request-front-office">Anthony Davis publicly requested the move</a> to allow him to play power forward.</p><p>However, Buha noted that the Lakers and Pacers are not yet engaging in trade discussions regarding Turner. He also noted that the team is only interested in potentially moving its center mainstay due to his current contract. Turner is in the final year of his $40 million contract and is expected to pursue a bigger extension in the offseason, which the Pacers seem not interested in offering.</p><p>“He is about to be an unrestricted free agent,” Buha said. “He is going to want 30-plus million, and I’ve heard Indiana is not sure if they want to give him [that much]. He has appeared in 42 of the team’s first 45 games.</p><p>Despite being the longest-tenured player on the Pacers, Turner’s reportedly seeking a pay raise would not line up with his current value. He currently profiles as a high-value role player rather than a star but appears to desire a superstar-level contract.</p><p>Buha added that Indiana would like to receive another center in return if they move Turner. Injuries caught up to them earlier, which was one of the main reasons why they were losing so many games, but health has been on their side through the past few weeks.</p><p>Andrew Nembhard was one of the players for the Pacers who missed some time with injury, but is back and playing a key role for the team similar to last season. One intriguing thing about Nembhard from teams is his contract, as he’s getting paid just around $2 million this season, and then his three-year, $60 million extension kicks in next season.</p><p>For what Nembhard brings to the team, his contract is perfect for any team looking to stay within their cap range.
