Fans of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-orleans-pelicans/pelicans-zion-williamson-issues-playful-warning-ja-morant-after-grizzlies-loss">Ja Morant’s finger-pointing Memphis Grizzlies</a> are still trying to get a full grasp on what kind of picture Tuomas Iisalo is trying to paint though. An Opening Night triumph against the New Orleans Pelicans ignited the FedExForum with electric energy. The game was over by halftime.</p><p>Grizzlies fans were appalled to see their beloved franchise get completely outclassed in its own building against a Heat team missing their best scorer in Tyler Herro. Memphis trailed 86-47 at the break. The effort was both horrifying and unfathomable. So, he’ll be playing despite dealing with some ankle soreness. The team’s PR account on X, formerly known as Twitter, also claimed that guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is also playing.</p><p>“Status Update: Ja Morant and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope are active and available for the Grizzlies tonight against the Heat.”</p><p>The star point guard has been dealing with an ankle issue since the late portion of the offseason. Morant was forced to miss several preseason games due to an ankle injury. However, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/memphis-grizzlies/grizzlies-news-ja-morant-ankle-injury-2025-26-season">Ja Morant never seemed too concerned</a> with the injury to begin with, as he shrugged off any worries about the situation being long-term.</p><p>Morant played in the Grizzlies’ 128-122 season-opening win over the New Orleans Pelicans. The two-time All-Star ended that night with 35 points, three rebounds, and three assists. He also shot 65.0% from the field while going 33.3% from beyond the three-point line. Overall, it was a rather efficient night for Ja Morant.</p><p>The Grizzlies certainly hope their star point guard can remain healthy throughout the 2025-26 campaign. Especially considering the most games he’s played in a single season came during his rookie year in the 2019-20 season, when he played 67 contests. He had injured his left ankle after giving it his all during the season opener.</p><p>On Friday, Morant was <a href="https://ak-static.cms.nba.com/referee/injury/Injury-Report_2025-10-24_09AM.pdf" rel="noopener">officially listed</a> as “questionable” prior to the Grizzlies taking on the Miami Heat, per the NBA Injury Report. Meanwhile, Scottie Pippen Jr., Zach Edney, Ty Jerome, Vince Williams Jr., and Brandon Clarke are out.</p><p>During the preseason, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/memphis-grizzlies/grizzlies-news-ja-morant-ankle-injury-2025-26-season">Morant had injured his ankle</a> and was listed as day-to-day for the beginning of the regular season. Last year, Morant averaged 23.2 points, 7.3 assists, and 4.1 rebounds per game while playing in 50 games.</p><p>In the process, the Grizzlies made to the first round of the NBA playoffs. Ultimately, they were <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/memphis-grizzlies/3-memphis-grizzlies-most-to-blame-for-thunder-sweep-to-complete-season-collapse">swept by the eventual champion Oklahoma City Thunder</a>. During the series, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/memphis-grizzlies/grizzlies-news-ja-morant-injury-status-leaves-door-open-game-4-despite-report">Morant sustained a hip injury</a> in Game 3.</p><p>Nevertheless, Morant went on to average 18.3 points and 5.0 assists through three games against the Thunder. Morant along with Jarren Jackson Jr. are part of a rebuilding Grizzlies that is looking to go for another shot at the playoffs.</p><p>A real challenge given how loaded the Western Conference is with elite teams. Plus, there is real concern about Morant’s overall health.</p><h2><b>Ja Morant’s longstanding battle with injuries</b></h2><p>Specifically, Morant <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/memphis-grizzlies/grizzlies-news-kendrick-perkins-vents-frustrations-ja-morant-career-fall-off">has had to endure lower-body injuries</a> in the last few years. It’s his ankles that have been his Achilles heel. During the 2020 regular season opener, Morant sprained his left ankle against the Brooklyn Nets. The following October, he sprained his right ankle.</p><p>As a result, Morant missed 12 straight games due to an ankle sprain and knee soreness. During the 2022 playoffs against the Golden State Warriors, Morant missed the remainder of the series due to a knee injury.</p><p>In his rookie season of 2019, Morant had battles with back spasms. There is one big problem, though: we never know when the 26-year-old will suit up next.</p><p>Following <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/memphis-grizzlies/grizzlies-news-ja-morant-jumper-zion-williamson">a fantastic season opener</a> in which he exploded for 35 points on 13-of-20 shooting in a 128-122 win over the New Orleans Pelicans, Morant is already on the injury report. He <a href="https://x.com/TheSteinLine/status/1981481381994582410" rel="noopener">is listed questionable</a> for Friday’s home game versus the Miami Heat due to ankle soreness, via NBA correspondent Marc Stein.</p><p>The Grizzlies are already without Zach Edey, Scotty Pippen Jr., Ty Jerome, Brandon Clarke and Vince Williams Jr., continuing a troubling trend of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/memphis-grizzlies/grizzlies-news-memphis-facing-harsh-reality-begin-2025-26-season">early-season injury woes</a>. Losing anyone else, let alone a franchise pillar, is enough to give Bluff City a collective migraine. Although this update does not appear alarming, it is obviously concerning to know that Morant’s status is in some doubt ahead of game No. 2. Memphis may have to monitor his condition throughout the 2025-26 campaign, which is not a development the organization probably anticipated until years from now.</p><p>That is the double-edged sword of having one of the most exciting athletes in the sport, though. Morant’s free-wheeling, fearless playing style helps the Grizzlies stay competitive and electrifies the FedExForum on a regular basis, but it also increases the risk of him taking a hard fall or pulling a muscle. How does he and the team reconcile this conundrum?  That crucial question remains unanswered.</p><p>Amid the constant uncertainty surrounding Morant’s status, it is important to appreciate the wizardry the former No. 2 overall draft pick displays when he is active. However, the night needed a capping moment to keep the conversations buzzing around Beale Street. Thankfully, with mere seconds separating <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-orleans-pelicans/pelicans-news-it-only-required-1-play-for-zion-williamson-to-remind-nba-of-his-potential">Zion Williamson’s new-look New Orleans Pelicans</a> from a frustrating, season-opening loss, Ja Morant decided to add a little salt to the wound. The result was a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/memphis-grizzlies/grizzlies-news-ja-morant-jumper-zion-williamson">viral moment the undefeated Memphis Grizzlies (1-0) can use</a> for content gold, a harsh welcome to the league for Jeremiah Fears, and a playful exchange between two of the NBA’s brightest stars.</p><p>Willie Green’s group needed to foul to extend the <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/game/_/gameId/401809938/pelicans-grizzlies" rel="noopener">all-but-over game</a> (128-122). New Orleans was pressing hard as Morant (35 points, three rebounds, three assists, one steal) received an inbound pass, which immediately put rookie Jeremiah Fears on an island. Morant then peeked over his shoulder at the pursuer before shaking the Oklahoma alum with a jaw-dropping, ankle-breaking fake. As Fears stumbled to the floor, Morant did not just drive to midcourt to be fouled; the All-Star stopped, turned, and pointed directly at the bewildered first-year divisional foe for what felt like an exaggerated three to four seconds, highlighting the defensive miscue.</p><p>Williamson (27 points, nine rebounds, five assists, five steals) stood waiting near the low block, a picture of impatience, ready for the final ticks to evaporate so the Pelicans could get on the plane home. It was a moment that showcased Morant’s unapologetic flair and his understanding of the NBA’s unwritten rules. More importantly, it highlighted Zion Williamson’s emergence as a leader with the Pelicans, one who will have his teammates’ backs, even when trading barbs with a friend.</p><p>The playful but pointed exchange underscores the fine line NBA players walk between fierce competition and fraternity. Morant hit Williamson with a couple of crossovers, dribbled in closer, then hit the jumper over Williamson’s outstretched arm.</p><p>While <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/memphis-grizzlies/grizzlies-news-nba-world-memphis-injury-situation">fans have bemoaned the bad luck with injuries the Grizzlies</a> have had, having Morant out on the court to start the season is a welcome sign. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/memphis-grizzlies/grizzlies-news-ja-morant-ankle-injury-2025-26-season">Morant was dealing with an ankle injury during training camp</a>, causing him to miss all of the Grizzlies’ preseason games. But Morant looked like he was in midseason form, and as of publication, he was leading the Grizzlies with 11 points to go along with three rebounds and two assists in ten minutes.</p><p>Last season, Morant suffered a hip injury during Game 3 of the Grizzlies’ opening round playoff series against the Oklahoma City Thunder. He was forced to miss Game 4 as the Thunder swept the Grizzlies.</p><p>Morant appeared in a total of 50 games last year, at a little over 30 minutes per game. He averaged 23.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, 7.3 assists and 1.2 steals with splits of 45.4 percent shooting from the field, 30.9 percent shooting from the three-point line and 82.4 percent shooting from the free-throw line.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The Grizzlies were dealt another blow on Monday before the start of the regular season when it was announced by the team that Ty Jerome suffered a calf injury and <a href="https://x.com/GrizzliesPR/status/1980398745503297902" rel="noopener">would be reevaluated</a> in four weeks. In addition to Jerome, the Grizzlies are also without Ja Morant, Zach Edey, Brandon Clarke and Scotty Pippen Jr. to start the year. Jerome was one of the team’s big offseason acquisitions through free agency.</p><p>With Ty Jerome’s recent injury update, it would put his potential return for the Grizzlies about a month into the start of the regular season. His absence also leaves the Grizzlies incredibly short-handed in their backcourt rotation. Not only are the Grizzlies now down both of their point guards in Morant and Pippen, but Jerome who was expected to give the backcourt a major boost.</p><p>Looking at the Grizzlies’ roster that means second-year guard Cam Spencer and two-way contract rookie Javon Small might see bigger roles from the start of the season. The Grizzlies also have Kentavious-Caldwell Pope, Vince Williams Jr. and rookie Cedric Coward who can all play guard.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/memphis-grizzlies/grizzlies-news-sign-ty-jerome-28-million-contract">Jerome signed with the Grizzlies in the offseason</a> in free agency on a three-year, $28 million contract. The No. 24 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, Jerome began his career with the Phoenix Suns before being traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder. He also played for the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers before signing with the Grizzlies.</p><p>Jerome is coming off a career-year during which he finished third in the Sixth Man of the Year voting. He appeared in 70 games for the Cavaliers last season, including three starts, at a little over 19 minutes per game. He averaged 12.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.1 steals with splits of 51.6 percent shooting from the field, 43.9 percent shooting from the three-point line and 87.2 percent shooting from the free-throw line.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The Grizzlies are already <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/memphis-grizzlies/grizzlies-news-ja-morant-ankle-injury-2025-26-season">without starting point guard Ja Morant due to an ankle injury</a>, and on Saturday the team announced that backup point guard <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/memphis-grizzlies/grizzlies-news-scotty-pippen-jr-timeline-toe-injury">Scotty Pippen Jr. would undergo a procedure for a toe injury</a> and will be sidelined indefinitely.</p><p>To make matters worse, the Grizzlies are also without two other key rotation players in Zach Edey and Brandon Clarke. Edey underwent ankle surgery in the offseason and is going to be out to start the year. The Grizzlies underwent a semi-retool in the offseason by trading Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. They also added frontcourt depth with veteran big man Jock Landale.</p><p>This past season, the Grizzlies lost to the Golden State Warriors in the opening round of the play-in, and then defeated the Dallas Mavericks to earn the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. While Jaren Jackson Jr. recently made his return, the Grizzlies are also without Zach Edey and Brandon Clarke due to injury. The most recent setback for the Grizzlies came in the form of Scotty Pippen Jr. who <a href="https://x.com/GrizzliesPR/status/1979602288315707632" rel="noopener">will be sidelined indefinitely</a> due to a toe injury, the team announced on Saturday.</p><p>The Grizzlies announced that Scotty Pippen Jr. will undergo a procedure to address discomfort in his left big toe and a timeline for his potential return will be updated following the procedure. Pippen’s absence is a big blow for a team that is already missing its starting point guard. Pippen has emerged in recent seasons as a capable NBA point guard.</p><p>For a Grizzlies team that has had their injury woes, Pippen was a model of durability last season, appearing in a career-high 79 games with 21 starts at a little over 21 minutes per game. He averaged 9.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.3 steals with splits of 48 percent shooting from the field, 39.7 percent shooting from the three-point line and 71.3 percent shooting from the free-throw line.</p><p>Pippen was entering his third season with the Grizzlies after signing with the team ahead of the 2023-24 season. He was initially signed to a two-way contract that year, but had that converted to a standard deal before the 2024-25 season.</p><p>The son of Hall of Famer and NBA legend Scottie Pippen, the younger Pippen began his NBA career with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2022-23 also on a two-way contract. Pippen went undrafted in the 2022 NBA Draft after three seasons of college basketball at Vanderbilt. He played only sparingly for the Lakers as a rookie, and was cut during the following year’s training camp.</p><p>With both Morant and Pippen sidelined, that likely opens up more opportunity at guard for Cam Spencer and Javon Small. Spencer had his two-way contract from last season converted to a standard deal, and Small signed a two-way contract after being selected with the No. 48 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
