On the first day of free agency, it was reported that the Grizzlies had come to terms on a contract renegotiation and extension with the former Defensive Player of the Year, inking him to a five-year contract worth around $240 million.</p><p>Coupled with their <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/memphis-grizzlies/grizzlies-news-sign-ty-jerome-28-million-contract">signing of Ty Jerome off free agency</a> and the new extension for versatile forward Santi Aldama, the Grizzlies are poised for another playoff push, even in a loaded Western Conference. They bolstered their depth, and following the Bane trade, they have the draft capital to keep building around Ja Morant and Jackson for the foreseeable future — with Morant under contract until the 2027-28 season and Jackson committing his future until 2030.</p><p>Did the Grizzlies overpay to keep one of their franchise cornerstones? Or is this simply the price of doing business in today’s NBA? Here is a rundown of how Memphis did in their agreed-upon contract extension with the 25-year-old forward.</p><h2><b>Grizzlies had to keep Jaren Jackson Jr., even at this huge price point</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Jaren-Jackson-Jr.-13-reacts-after-scoring-during-the-first-half-against.jpg"><figcaption>© Sam Sharpe-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>A $240 million deal spread out over five years amounts to around $48 million per season — huge money, even in today’s NBA. This is the kind of money that true superstars and game-changers make, and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/memphis-grizzlies/grizzlies-jaren-jackson-jr-santi-aldama-free-agent-contracts-zach-kleiman-future">for the Grizzlies</a>, they are deeming Jackson to be that kind of player.</p><p>For what it’s worth, Jackson has improved leaps and bounds and is either yet to enter his prime or he’s smack-dab in the middle of it. This past season, he averaged 22.2 points per game even with the Grizzlies getting most of its players back after an injury-ravaged 2023-24 campaign and he did so while improving his efficiency, with his true shooting of 59.1 percent being excellent considering the volume of shots and the shot diet he had all year long.</p><p>Moreover, he nearly matched his career-high in points per game (22.5) despite playing nearly three fewer minutes per contest than he did last season. And at 25, there’s no reason to expect any sort of drop-off from him on this side of the ball for the foreseeable future.</p><p>Jackson earns most of his money, however, on the defensive end. The Grizzlies allowed nearly four fewer points per 100 possessions whenever Jackson was <a href="https://www.pbpstats.com/wowy-combos/nba?TeamId=1610612763&amp;Season=2024-25&amp;SeasonType=Regular%2BSeason&amp;PlayerIds=1628991" rel="noopener">on the court</a> last season (per PBP Stats), and it’s his mobility on the perimeter that sets him apart from most other rim-protecting big men.</p><p>Only 26 players at present are making over $48 million per season, so Jackson is in select company after signing his new contract. And it’s hard to argue that Jackson isn’t worth that kind of financial commitment. This is the going rate for star players these days, and Jackson is a two-way force whose skillset makes him one of the more attractive big men to build around in today’s NBA.</p><p>Of course, there are a few glaring deficiencies in Jackson’s game that he needs to address if he were to blossom into the best version of himself he could be. For starters, he has to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/memphis-grizzlies/grizzlies-news-jaren-jackson-jr-zach-edey-receive-stern-stop-fouling-challenge-after-timberwolves-loss-tuomas-iilaso">cut down on his fouling problem</a>. Part of the reason why his impact can run so hot and cold is that he typically finds himself in foul trouble — forcing difficult rotation decisions on the fly for the Grizzlies. He led the league in personal fouls committed this past season, and that is not quite the statistical category any NBA player wants to lead.</p><p>It’s not like Jackson is accruing those fouls in an undeserved manner. He sometimes gets in his own way, committing cheap fouls on ill-advised reach-ins without much consideration for the game state they’re in. He has to find a way to rein in his worst instincts so he can be on the floor as much as possible for a Grizzlies team that thrives whenever he’s on the court.</p><p>The other problem Jackson has, at this point, is not looking fixable. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/memphis-grizzlies/grizzlies-news-why-jaren-jackson-jr-achilles-heel-become-gigantic-memphis-nba-playoffs-problem">His rebounding leaves so much to be desired</a>; among qualified players, he ranked 62nd this past season in rebounds per game (5.6). For reference, newly-signed New Orleans Pelicans center Kevon Looney, despite averaging just 15 minutes across 76 games last season, grabbed more total rebounds than the Grizzlies big man did.</p><p>There’s no coincidence that the Grizzlies were at their best in the 2020s when they had Steven Adams line up alongside Jackson in the frontcourt. Memphis will have to find a way to compensate for Jackson’s major weakness moving forward.</p><p>Nonetheless, the most important thing is that the Grizzlies will now have Jackson to build around for the next five seasons at least. The contract may look stunningly expensive at first glance, but Memphis had to keep Jackson if only to protect the asset, which they did at the usual price players of his caliber go for these days.</p><p><b>Grade: B+</b></p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Aldama agreed to a deal worth more than $52 million.</p><p>Those moves kept familiar faces in town. But then Memphis went outside of its organization and landed Ty Jerome, according to Shams Charania.</p><p>“Free agent guard Ty Jerome has <a href="https://x.com/ShamsCharania/status/1939823309665050713" rel="noopener">agreed to a three-year, $28 million deal</a> with the Memphis Grizzlies, with a player option in year three, sources tell ESPN. Kieran Piller and Mark Bartelstein of @PrioritySports negotiated the new deal with the Grizzlies,” wrote Charania on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>Jerome is coming off a career year for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Despite playing just 20 minutes per game, he averaged 12.5 points, 3.4 assists, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game. But his percentages were off the charts in 2024-2025. Jerome shot a whopping 43.9 percent from beyond the arc and better than 51 percent from the field.</p><p>It is not easy to find a free agent guard who shoots that efficiently, and also affects the game positively on defense off the bench. But that is exactly what the newest Grizzlies player did last season.</p><p>He was a key component the the Cavs finishing atop the Eastern Conference. He was the leading scorer off the bench, making sure Cleveland did not skip a beat when Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland were off the floor.</p><p>He will likely take up that same role with the Grizzlies.</p><p>Jerome, a product a Tony Bennett’s Virginia system that produced toughness and grit. Jackson Jr. was immediately an impact player for the Grizzlies when he joined the team in 2018 after being the fourth overall pick in the draft. He has averaged double figures during all seven seasons of his career, and he hasn’t averaged below 20 points per game since the 2022-23 season.</p><p>The last two years have been incredibly impressive as Jackson Jr. has averaged 22.5 and 22.2 PPG. He also averaged 5.6 rebounds per game and 2.0 assists per game this past season. His size and shooting ability makes him incredibly difficult to defend as Jackson Jr. is a very capable three-point shooter. He shot the deep ball at a 37.5% clip last season.</p><p>Not only is Jackson Jr. a force on the offensive end, but his defensive abilities make him an incredibly valuable player. They held not one, but three picks — becoming one of the few to hold that many selections before the event.</p><p>They then surfaced as one of the trade hungry teams on draft night.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/memphis-grizzlies/grizzlies-news-memphis-cedric-coward-no-11-pick-trade-blazers">Memphis moved into the 11th spot in a deal with the Portland Trail Blazers</a>. Cedric Coward arrived following the deal. The Grizzlies pulled off one more draft trade in the second round, working a deal with the Houston Rockets.</p><p>Memphis still landed three incoming rookies to team with Ja Morant and company. Does this hand Memphis a high draft grade? It’s time to put together their report grade now that the draft has concluded.</p><h2><b>Round 1, Pick 11: G/F Cedric Coward, Washington State </b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Cedric-Coward-NBA-Draft-night-.jpg"><figcaption>Brad Penner-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Coward’s post draft started with a mistake in identity. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/memphis-grizzlies/nba-news-malika-andrews-makes-colin-cowherd-gaffe-for-cedric-coward-pick">Malika Andrews mistakenly called him Colin Cowherd</a> during the ESPN NBA Draft broadcast.</p><p>The Grizzlies still landed one of the top two-way talents. And one of the top jump shooters available. He’s bringing extensive experience too — having played for Willamette University, Eastern Washington and Washington State. The Fresno, California native still led Wazzu in scoring (17.7 points per game) despite playing six games.</p><p>Coward is attempting to return from a shoulder injury. Which will draw league concerns. But he drew praise for his three-point shooting stroke <a href="https://www.nba.com/draft/2025/prospects/cedric-coward" rel="noopener">in his scouting evaluation pre-draft</a>.</p><p>Morant and the Grizzlies gain a new long range shooting presence. He brings a motor on the defensive side too, which leads to hogging the rebounds over opponents. Coward even earned comparisons to Eastern Conference champion Aaron Nesmith. He’s worth moving up for on Memphis’s side.</p><p><b>Grade: A</b></p><h2><b>Round 2, Pick 18 (No. 48 overall): Guard Javon Small, West Virginia </b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Javon-Small.jpg"><figcaption>Rob Gray-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Grizz stayed with the guard theme on night two. This time plucking the 6-foot-1 Big 12 Conference star.</p><p>Small ended the season earning first team All-Conference honors. He racked up 18.6 PPG with 5.6 assists per game.</p><p>“Small has proven to be one of the most talented college basketball players in the country,” <a href="https://www.nba.com/draft/2025/prospects/javon-small" rel="noopener">his scouting report begins</a>. “He’s a strong defender, playmaker and can create his own shot without just launching 3s.”</p><p>He displays a fearless side for contact, too. Attacking the rim and finishing through contact. He’s even creative with his passes — which brings thoughts of alley-oop feeds to Morant and the veterans. Lastly, Small is disruptive against screens.</p><p>Small is a small guard who plays larger than he looks. He’s capable of sparking energy off the bench to start before pushing for a starting spot. The veteran guard is a smart pick for general manager Zach Kleiman.</p><p><b>Grade: A-</b></p><h2><b>Round 2, Pick 29 (No. 59 overall): Guard Jahmai Mashack, Tennessee </b></h2><p>The Grizzlies closed the draft with a local prospect. And one originally headed to the Rockets. Mashack became the final trade of the draft festivities.</p><p>He became an anti-portal story too. Mashack went from redshirt freshman, to rotational piece as a sophomore and junior, to starting his senior year. All without dipping into the portal.</p><p>Mashack adds one more defensive layer inside the FedEx Forum. Except he received a glowing review for that skillset.</p><p>“Mashack was arguably the best defender in college basketball during the 2024-25 season, and that projects to be his go-to NBA skill,” his <a href="https://www.nba.com/draft/2025/prospects/jahmai-mashack" rel="noopener">scouting report wrote down</a>. “He’s an aggressive, predictive defender who often takes the opposing team’s toughest assignment, being active with both his hands and feet.”</p><p>He’s not a scoring threat. But think of Mashack as a NFL cornerback assigned to the best receiving option. His role is to limit the touches, plus scoring opportunities.</p><p><b>Grade: B</b></p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Ty Jerome, who played some of the best basketball of his career at the end of the 2024-25 regular season with the Cleveland Cavaliers, is one of the names on that list.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/ranking-3-best-ty-jerome-free-agency-destinations-leaves-cavaliers">Jerome is hitting the open market</a> as an unrestricted free agent this summer, and he should have a pretty solid market for his services. However, the Cavs likely don’t have any room for him on the roster or in the rotation for him after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/cavs-news-acquiring-lonzo-ball-trade-bulls">trading for Lonzo Ball from the Chicago Bulls</a>.</p><p>However, there will be plenty of teams that would love to have Jerome’s size and shooting ability in the backcourt off the bench. The Detroit Pistons, Sacramento Kings, Orlando Magic and Houston Rockets are four <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/siegels-scoop-latest-warriors-jonathan-kuminga-nba-free-agency-intel">teams that could make a run</a> at the Virginia product, according to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints.</p><p>“After trading for Ball, it looks increasingly unlikely that the Cleveland Cavaliers Sixth Man of the Year finalist Ty Jerome will return in free agency,” Siegel wrote. “Plenty of teams will hold interest in potentially signing Jerome using their full mid-level exception in free agency. Keep an eye on teams like the Detroit Pistons, Orlando Magic, Houston Rockets, and Sacramento Kings as potential landing spots for Jerome. These four teams have a key need for backcourt depth.”</p><p>The Charlotte Hornets and Memphis Grizzlies are <a href="https://marcstein.substack.com/p/sunday-best-lots-more-of-the-latest" rel="noopener">two teams that are also interested</a> in Jerome, according to Marc Stein of The Stein Line.</p><p>“Charlotte and Memphis are two teams that keep coming up as likely suitors for Ty Jerome, who is now regarded as a lock to leave Cleveland to find the deal he is known to be seeking that starts at (or at worst adjacent) to the full $14.1 million midlevel exception,” Stein wrote.</p><p>Zach Lowe also mentioned the Golden State Warriors as a potential landing spot for Jerome after he played one season there in 2022-23.</p><p>Jerome struggled at times in the Cavs’ second-round loss to the Indiana Pacers in the playoffs, but he was being a bit overtasked due to the injuries in Cleveland, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/darius-garland-toe-surgery-announced-amid-cavs-trade-rumors">particularly to Darius Garland’s toe.</a> If one of these teams in free agency is able to scale his role back down, he could be a big pickup this offseason.</p><p>The 27-year old played in 70 games this season, scoring a career-high 12.5 points per game while shooting an incredible 43.9% from 3-point range. Although the star point guard has not received any suspensions since or been seen brandishing a firearm, he still gave the league offices a headache with his finger-gun celebrations in April. The 25-year-old was assessed <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/memphis-grizzlies/grizzlies-news-ja-morant-fined-75000-gun-gestures-vs-heat">a $75,000 fine</a>, and fans consequently gave him a unique nickname, one that he seems to be embracing as of Saturday.</p><p>Morant <a href="https://x.com/GrizzlyMuse/status/1939075064802230283" rel="noopener">changed the profile photo</a> on his Instagram and X/Twitter accounts to an image of Keanu Reeves’ beloved “John Wick” character, via GrizzMuse, an apparent reference to the “Ja Wick” moniker that people have referred to him as on social media.</p><p>For those unfamiliar with the film franchise that reinvigorated Reeves’ acting career, it centers around a legendary and retired hit man who comes back into focus after seeking revenge on a group of mobsters. Consequently, he ends up on the radar of almost every serious assassin and is forced to constantly fight to stay alive. It is John Wick versus the world, so to speak. There are multiple ways to interpret Morant’s change as it pertains to this complex protagonist.</p><p>Wick is obviously extremely adept at using a firearm. If the 2022 All-NBA Second-Team selection is alluding to that aspect specifically, that might not go over well given his history. This feels like a new era in Grind City.</p><p>But as long as he is healthy, which is certainly no guarantee, Ja Morant remains the centerpiece of this team. Sure, he is a polarizing figure, and yes, he is coming off an injury-ravaged campaign in which his production and overall efficiency dipped, but this electric athlete is still capable of great things on a basketball court. Despite the skepticism surrounding him, Morant seems determined to remind everyone of his scintillating skills.</p><p>Perhaps this “Ja Wick” persona is not meant to stoke flames or give the NBA the finger, but rather to serve as personal motivation in the face of all the mockery. If genuinely positive results follow, fans will extol him once again.
