The Timberwolves found themselves down by 20 in the second half before storming back and taking a late lead, only to have Lakers guard <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/minnesota-timberwolves/timberwolves-news-austin-reaves-game-winner-leaving-julius-randle-sleepless">Austin Reaves hit</a> a game winner on them as time expired.</p><p>The Reaves play occurred when he got a screen from a teammate, then navigated around Rudy Gobert, who bizarrely positioned himself off to the side of Reaves instead of in front of him, and then lofted in a floater over Donte DiVincenzo.</p><p>Users on X, formerly Twitter, <a href="https://x.com/r_mack/status/1983891176731095531" rel="noopener">were frustrated with</a> the former Defensive Player of the Year, to say the least.</p><p>“Rudy Gobert is slow and old now and provides zilch offensively, and an average defense, but the smarter than everyone GM doubled down on his investment and basically used up every asset imaginable so now it’s next to impossible to pair Ant up with a star,” wrote one fan.</p><p>“There’s about 20 centers in the league that’ll give you what 2025 Rudy Gobert is giving the Wolves rn and it’s a sad sight to see,” added another.</p><p>“Idk guys, you can yell about the coach all you want, I don’t care who the coach is if this is what Rudy Gobert is now the team isn’t gonna be very good,” chimed in another.</p><h2><b>A frustrating start for the Timberwolves</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Gobert-shoots.jpg"><figcaption>Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Minnesota Timberwolves entered this season hoping to continue to build off two straight trips to the Western Conference Finals. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/minnesota-timberwolves/timberwolves-news-joe-ingles-1-liner-anthony-edwards-blazers">Timberwolves ended up</a> holding on for the win against a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/indiana-pacers/pacers-news-obi-tobbin-leaves-game-vs-timberwolves-leg-soreness">Pacers team that was</a> similarly shorthanded, but after the game, all fans could wonder about was Edwards’ injury status.</p><p>On Monday, the team finally got an update, and it <a href="https://x.com/ShamsCharania/status/1982858204708290879" rel="noopener">wasn’t a positive one.</a></p><p>“Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards will miss two weeks with a right hamstring strain, sources tell ESPN,” reported ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>It’s certainly a disappointing early-season update for a Timberwolves team that is looking to build off the last two years, both of which ended with gentelman’s sweeps in the Western Conference Finals.</p><p>The good news for the Timberwolves is that the Edwards injury news comes at what would figure to be a relatively easy patch of their schedule, with games against the Charlotte Hornets, Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Lakers, and multiple contests against the Utah Jazz all set to take place during Edwards’ absence.</p><p>Edwards is one of multiple star players in the league currently out due to injury, including Lakers stars LeBron James and Luka Doncic, among others. The Timberwolves have a relatively deep team but did lose some of their wing depth this offseason when Nickeil Alexander-Walker departed in free agency.</p><p>In Edwards’ absence, the Timberwolves will likely lean more heavily on younger players like Terrence Shannon Jr., who had some moments for them during last year’s playoff run, to pick up some of the slack.</p><p>In any case, the Nuggets are next set to hit the floor on Monday evening at home against the Denver Nuggets at 9:30 PM ET. His late shot sequence was decisive: a step-back to cut it to 107–105, a three for a 108–107 lead with 3:36 left, another three for 114–112, and a Rudy Gobert dunk with 32.1 seconds remaining to close it out.</p><p>Minnesota trailed 61–57 at halftime and by seven after three because they did not get enough stops. Early foul trouble limited Gobert to under 13 first-half minutes, and Portland attacked the rim and the foul line freely.</p><p>For Portland, Jerami Grant came off the bench to top-score with 29 points as Deni Avdija produced 20 as a starter. McDaniels is lauded for his defensive play, making him a potential anchor for Charlotte.</p><p>McDaniels rose as a trade contender even before the Hornets thought.
