The move <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/76ers-rumors-quentin-grimes-heading-toward-8-7-million-qualifying-offer-skips-overseas-flight">brings Grimes back</a> on board for another season after he broke out down the stretch of the 2024-25 campaign after the season was already lost due to injuries</p><p>Grimes and the 76ers did not see eye to eye on a potential new contract throughout much of the offseason, and recently, more light was shed on<a href="https://sixerswire.usatoday.com/story/sports/nba/sixers/2025/10/01/reported-details-emerge-of-what-quentin-grimes-side-sixers-offered/86463509007/" rel="noopener"> just how far apart</a> the two sides were at times.</p><p>“…the Sixers’ first formal proposal of the offseason came on Sept. 24 — nearly three months into free agency — with a four-year, $39 million offer. Days later, Grimes was offered a one-year, $8.8 million deal that gave him $100,000 more than his qualifying offer in order to waive an inherent no-trade clause. Those frameworks were declined, Bauman said, and negotiations never advanced,” reported Shams Charania of ESPN, per SixersWire. “On Wednesday, (Grimes’ agent David) Bauman said Grimes’ side offered the 76ers a one-year framework at $17 million while waiving the no-trade clause and a two-year deal at $34 million with a player option. Still, the 76ers GM remained optimistic.</p><p>Now, Grimes appears to be headed toward <a href="https://x.com/JakeLFischer/status/1972398753572098088" rel="noopener">an $8.7 million qualifying offer</a> with the 76ers for the upcoming season, as The Stein Line’s Jake Fischer reported.</p><p>“Short of agreeing to a one-year “balloon” payment, Grimes appears headed towards accepting that $8.7 million QO,” Fischer reported. “The two sides remain far apart, and a Philadelphia source with knowledge of talks strongly refuted the 4-year, $39 million offer Bauman has explained on the record.”</p><p>This comes after Fischer’s initial report of Grimes not being on the 76ers’ team flight for the upcoming preseason after missing Media Day.</p><p>“Restricted free agent guard Quentin Grimes is not on the Sixers’ team flight for preseason games in Abu Dhabi,” Fischer initially reported. “Philadelphia has also declined the request from Grimes’ agent, David Bauman, to push back the 10/1 deadline to accept his qualifying offer.”</p><p>As time passed, Grimes’ value essentially dipped far past the range that his agent, David Bauman, <a href="https://marcstein.substack.com/p/the-latest-on-jonathan-kuminga-quentin" rel="noopener">was seeking in free agency</a>, Fischer noted.</p><p>“After Grimes’ gaudy production in March, Bauman has pursued a salary approaching $25 million in average annual value. The Sixers’ offer, when it finally came, landed shy of $40 million over four seasons. So, yeah, far apart. Some sort of one-year deal seems most likely, at the moment,” Mizell wrote on Bluesky.</p><p>If Grimes and the 76ers don’t come to an agreement, there could be a chance that this could go on for some time. As of now, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/76ers-rumors-quentin-grimes-skipping-media-day-contract-offer">Grimes will not be attending media day</a> or traveling with the team to Abu Dhabi for their preseason games. It’s obvious that Grimes is looking for a long-term deal with more money, but it seems like the 76ers are trying to be cautious with how they handle the team.</p><p>With the 76ers dealing with so many injuries last season, Grimes stepped in down the stretch of the year and was the best player on the court for them, averaging 21.9 points after being traded from the Dallas Mavericks.</p><h2><b>What will the 76ers do with Quentin Grimes?</b></h2><p>If the 76ers can’t come to an agreement with Grimes, he could just accept the qualifying offer worth $8.7 million. If he is to accept, that could handicap the 76ers, as he would have a no-trade clause and would be locked into his deal for the entire season. It’s not certain if the 76ers want to do that, so the best-case scenario for them is to come to a common ground with Grimes.</p><p>It might be imperative that the 76ers sign Grimes now, with the news that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/76ers-news-jared-mccain-thumb-injury-training-camp">Jared McCain suffered a torn thumb ligament</a> during a workout. Luckily, Tyrese Maxey will be healthy coming into the season, and rookie V.J. However, Quentin Grimes will not be in attendance at the Sixers’ facility for Media Day, with the two sides still <a href="https://x.com/ShamsCharania/status/1970938518345298270" rel="noopener">far apart</a> on a deal, according to Shams Charania of ESPN.</p><p>Since the offseason began, Philadelphia has remained <a href="https://x.com/BrettSiegelNBA/status/1948851846069846146" rel="noopener">extremely confident</a> that Grimes would be a vital part of their roster alongside Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey. At no point has the organization attempted to discuss potential sign-and-trades or avenues to move him this summer, sources told ClutchPoints.</p><p>While the 76ers have <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/76ers-rumors-buzz-around-quentin-grimes-free-agency">stood firm on their belief of Grimes being on their roster</a> to begin the 2025-26 season, their first formal contract offer did not come until Wednesday, two days before the team is set to hold Media Day.</p><p>As a result, he won’t be attending the first team function of the preseason, and he won’t travel with the team to Abu Dhabi, where they will begin their preseason and training camp at the start of October.</p><p>Daryl Morey and the 76ers’ front office have operated with a cautious approach when it comes to free agency this offseason because of the uncertainty that surrounds key talents like Embiid and George.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/sources-joel-embiids-ongoing-knee-issues-create-genuine-concern-about-76ers-future">Injuries have played a major role in the 76ers’ demise</a> over the last couple of seasons, and the organization has made it clear they will not tie themselves down to long-term money in order to keep all of their roster options on the table.</p><p>Grimes has been in search of long-term stability, which has led to this staredown with the 76ers.</p><p>At this point, one week before his deadline to accept the $8.7 million qualifying offer and with the team heading overseas to Abu Dhabi, a lot of mystery surrounds the 76ers and their ability to find common ground on a deal with Grimes.</p><p>Unlike the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/siegels-scoop-warriors-final-contract-offer-jonathan-kumingas">restricted free agency situation with Jonathan Kuminga and the Golden State Warriors</a>, this stalemate between Grimes and the Sixers could go on past the Oct. 1 deadline to accept his qualifying offer, league sources said.</p><p>If this were to happen and Grimes passes up on the one-year qualifying offer, the 76ers’ options to keep the young guard become scarce outside of offering him a one-year contract at a higher value, something that doesn’t appear to be an option right before training camp starts.</p><p>Grimes returning to the 76ers by way of his qualifying offer would essentially handcuff the organization, as the 25-year-old would inherit a no-trade clause and be locked into his deal for the 2025-26 season.</p><p>The 76ers <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-caleb-martin-trade-not-disaster">acquired Grimes and a second-round pick from the Dallas Mavericks</a> in February in a trade that sent Caleb Martin to the Mavs. Philadelphia currently has 13 players with standard contracts entering the preseason.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

After absorbing Terance Mann, Michael Porter Jr. and Haywood Highsmith in salary dumps, the Nets still have over $16 million in cap space.</p><p>They could utilize a portion of their remaining space in a trade with the Philadelphia 76ers, who <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGCsQcYjF2s" rel="noopener">are attempting</a> to shed salary to re-sign restricted free agent Quentin Grimes.</p><p>“There has been buzz all summer long about the Sixers looking to potentially move one of, if not both, Andre Drummond and Kelly Oubre,” said NBA insider Jake Fischer. “If they are able to find a deal for one of those two guys as we get closer to camp, that would open up some more wiggle room for Philadelphia to be able to pay Grimes a little bit more.”</p><p>After re-signing Cam Thomas, Day’Ron Sharpe and Ziaire Williams, Brooklyn still needs to spend roughly $7 million to reach the NBA’s salary floor before opening night. The veteran center struggled across 40 appearances (23 starts) in 2024-25, averaging 7.3 points and 7.8 rebounds on 50.0 percent shooting in 18.8 minutes per game.</p><p>Philadelphia spent second-round picks on centers Adem Bona (No. 41 in 2024) and Johni Broome (No. 35 in 2025) in the last two drafts. Both present better options to fill backup center minutes behind Joel Embiid this season.</p><p>Meanwhile, Oubre was a starter for Philadelphia last season after signing a two-year, $16.4 million contract. He posted decent counting stats across 60 appearances, averaging 15.8 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.8 assists. However, his outside shooting continued to regress, as he shot 29.3 percent from three on a career-low 4.2 attempts per 36 minutes.</p><p>Unlike Drummond, the 76ers may be able to move Oubre without attaching a draft pick to his contract. The 76ers have worked hard to put together some young pieces, including recent 2025 draftee VJ Edgecombe, around Embiid and Paul George, but it remains to be seen whether that will be enough to truly compete this season.</p><p>The biggest storyline for the 76ers down the stretch of last year was the play of Quentin Grimes, whom the team acquired from the Dallas Mavericks. Grimes put together the best stretch of basketball of his career at the end of last season, when the 76ers had already pulled the plug on the year, consistently scoring in the high 20s all the way up into the 40s at one point.</p><p>Grimes has yet to be re-signed on a new contract by Philadelphia this summer, and recently, NBA insider Jake Fischer broke down what moves the 76ers could make to help <a href="https://www.hoopshype.com/story/sports/nba/rumors/2025/09/09/jake-fischer-there-has-been-buzz-all-summer-long/86056182007/" rel="noopener">accelerate that process.</a></p><p>“There has been buzz all summer long about the Sixers looking to potentially move one of, if not both, Andre Drummond and Kelly Oubre,” said Fischer, via Bleacher Report, per HoopsHype. “If they are able to find a deal for one of those two guys as we get closer to camp, that would open up some more wiggle room for Philadelphia to be able to pay Quentin Grimes a little bit more than what he’s looking for right now and what that qualifying offer would be. Despite this, the 76ers don’t have a lot in the way of real depth on their roster, and recently, it came to light that the team once toyed with the idea of bringing back an interesting and highly controversial player: Ben Simmons.</p><p>Simmons <a href="https://www.sportskeeda.com/basketball/news-nba-free-agency-rumors-ben-simmons-made-philly-return-repairing-fractured-relationship-joel-embiid" rel="noopener">apparently had interest</a> in rejoining the 76ers after his February buyout with the Brooklyn Nets, although he ultimately ended up signing with the Los Angeles Clippers for the rest of the season.</p><p>“There had been some overtures, I would say, between Ben Simmons and the Sixers once he was securing a buyout from Brooklyn,” NBA insider Jake Fischer said, per Bleacher Report (via Sportskeeda). “He still has some friends in the area. I believe his brother was living in Philadelphia for a time, and there was some interest from Philadelphia at that point in time.”</p><p>Fischer also added that “I can’t say I have any updated information on the Sixers’ interest in Ben Simmons there. Among the most notable is Philadelphia 76ers guard Quentin Grimes. While Grimes and the 76ers are not reportedly close on an extnesion, NBA insider Jake Fischer <a href="https://www.youtube.com/live/H0MbAabhiF4?t=580s" rel="noopener">feels the two sides will agree</a> to one before the start of the season.</p><p>“I can absolutely say that the Sixers—various people in the organization, when asked—keep saying that Quentin Grimes is their top priority. And that they are going to bring Quentin Grimes back, it’s just a matter of dollars and cents,” Fischer said on his Bleacher Report live stream. “There is some buzz of him taking the qualifying offer, too. I do think, at the end of the day, as things get to September and maybe even closer to October, that there will be enough synergy [to get a deal done] between Quentin Grimes and the Sixers… Quentin Grimes has never made significant money throughout his tenure as an NBA player. He absolutely stands to benefit from taking a significant offer, whatever it ends up being, from Philadelphia.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/76ers-rumors-the-shortest-contract-quentin-grimes-is-expected-to-sign">Grimes broke out with the 76ers last season</a> after joining the team in a trade from the Dallas Mavericks at the deadline. The 24-year-old averaged 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.5 steals on 47/37/75 shooting splits over 28 appearances.</p><p>That success has left him seeking a significant salary increase during the first free agency of his career.</p><h2>Will Quentin Grimes and the 76ers agree to a new contract before next season?</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Quentin-Grimes-2.jpg"><figcaption>Kyle Ross-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>While <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/76ers-news-daryl-morey-gets-honest-on-quentin-grimes-challenging-negotiations">Grimes and other restricted free agents are holding out</a> for significant paydays, they have little leverage in negotiations. The Brooklyn Nets are the NBA’s only team with cap space and have not shown interest in bringing in a big-money free agent. Because of this, the most Grimes and other restricted free agents can receive from opposing teams is the $14.1 million non-taxpayer mid-level exception.</p><p>The 76ers have little incentive to exceed that $14.1 million number. If Grimes is unwilling to accept a deal in that range, he could sign his $8.5 million qualifying offer and become an unrestricted free agent next offseason. If he does so, he would have veto rights on any trade during this coming season.</p><p>However, accepting the qualifying offer would be a risky proposition for a player who has yet to receive a significant payday during his NBA career. Grimes would run the risk of getting injured or his production falling off. Further, with the 76ers getting healthier and Grimes heading for unrestricted free agency, he could have a diminished role compared to late last season.</p><p>The standstill between Grimes and Philadelphia doesn’t have to reach a resolution anytime soon. Oct. 1 is the deadline for restricted free agents to sign the qualifying offer. Embiid has spent the majority of the last two seasons sidelined with injuries after his 2023 MVP campaign, but the 76ers did draft a future building block this offseason in<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/exclusive-dylan-harper-vj-edgecombe-kon-knueppel-nba-summer-league"> former Baylor standout VJ Edgecombe.</a></p><p>Edgecombe figures to inject some youth into a 76ers team that otherwise relies heavily on aging veterans like Embiid and Paul George.</p><p>Recently, an anonymous Eastern Conference general manager gave <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45807536/2025-nba-draft-executives-debate-espn-poll-rookies-year-best-picks-summer-league" rel="noopener">a bold prediction</a> for just how quickly Edgecombe could climb the 76ers’ ranks.</p><p>“VJ might be Philly’s second-best player by the end of the season, factoring in [Joel] Embiid’s uncertain health,” said the general manager, per Jeremy Woo of ESPN. “He’s that good and will thrive playing in Nick Nurse’s system.”</p><p>Woo also noted that the 76ers have a bit of a logjam at the guard position with Tyrese Maxey and Jared McCain, but that “Edgecombe’s potential to be a standout on both sides of the ball ultimately overrode those concerns,” and that “there’s plenty of optimism around the league surrounding his future.</p><h2><b>An exciting 76ers prospect</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Philadelphia-76ers-guard-VJ-Edgecombe.jpg"><figcaption>Candice Ward-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>VJ Edgecombe recently flashed the playmaking ability and athleticism that allowed him to be the number three overall pick during his stint with the 76ers’ Summer League team in Las Vegas.</p><p>As Woo mentioned, the 76ers have three combo guard-adjacent players on their roster in Edgecombe, Maxey, and McCain, who might have won the 2024-25 Rookie of the Year award had he not gone down with injury.</p><p>However, having too much talent is never a bad thing, and the 76ers will need all of the perimeter playmaking they can get due to Embiid’s shaky health and George’s own lengthy injury history and age.</p><p>It remains to be seen how big of a role Edgecombe will be given in Nick Nurse’s rotation at the start of the season, but it’s certainly within the realm of possibility that he works his way into being a key contributor for Philadelphia sooner rather than later.</p><p>The 76ers’ schedule for the 2025-26 season will be released in August.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Embiid’s knees are a growing concern right now, and it sounds like finding his replacement is a possibility.</p><p>“There is always the possibility of a last-minute trade happening in this spot. Even so, [Daryl] Morey is never afraid to take a swing on a player he deems worthy in the NBA Draft. While it is widely assumed that Cooper Flagg and Dylan Harper will go off the board with the first two picks, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/editorials/philadelphia-76ers-nightmare-outcome-2025-nba-draft">76ers have multiple routes that they can go in</a> at No. 3.</p><p>Of course, Philadelphia’s current roster makes their situation even more interesting. With Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Jared McCain all coming back from injury, this is a team that has a chance to compete in a banged-up Eastern Conference that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/pacers-news-shams-confirms-tyrese-haliburtons-achilles-tear-in-nba-finals-game-7">won’t have Jayson Tatum or Tyrese Haliburton due to injury</a> next season.</p><p>Ace Bailey and VJ Edgecombe are the two most common names to pop up at No. 3. While the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/2025-nba-mock-draft-4-0-latest-intel-kevin-durant-trade">76ers are leaning toward Edgecombe</a> after Bailey cancelled his workout with them, a shocking trade could be on the table according to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints.</p><p>“Ever since Bailey canceled his workout with the 76ers, the talk around the league has been centered around Philadelphia going with VJ Edgecombe or Tre Johnson,” Siegel wrote in his latest mock draft. “While the Sixers could still go with Bailey and have yet to rule him out as the potential third pick, Edgecombe makes the most sense given the better win-now path he presents.</p><p>“Even so, the 76ers have kept the door open for a trade with this third pick, as Morey is truly taking his time to make a decision and fielding all offers that come his way. There could be a last-minute trade brewing here for a team looking to move up and get Bailey that takes place on the night of the NBA Draft.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/76ers-news-pennsylvania-governor-josh-shapiro-no-ace-bailey-demand">Bailey certainly has the talent to be an NBA star</a>, but some teams have become frustrated with the way he has approached his pre-draft process and with his reputation. His ball handling and shot-creating upside will be swing skills, but he should help Philadelphia right away regardless.</p><p>However, there is a chance that another team could fall in love with the shotmaking of Bailey or Johnson or the athleticism of Edgecombe and give the 76ers an offer that they cannot refuse.
