But now that the 2024-25 season is almost upon us, the Nuggets have a renewed vigor about them as they look to put the disappointment of last year in the rearview mirror. The Nuggets may have lost one of their best contributors over the past three seasons in Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, but <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nuggets-news-russell-westbrook-shares-kobe-bryant-mentality-for-handling-boos-from-fans">brought in the ultimate X-factor</a> in the NBA to come off the bench: Russell Westbrook.</p><p>Westbrook has been arguably the most polarizing player in the NBA over the past decade. He has clear strengths in his game, but his deficiencies are also glaring, namely, he can’t space the floor consistently well.</p><p>But the Nuggets are welcoming the fact that he’s on the roster now, with Aaron Gordon commending the energy the former league MVP brings to the table. In fact, Gordon has already been touched by Westbrook’s contagious competitive streak, with Gordon saying that he’s <a href="https://twitter.com/ClutchPoints/status/1839417578005147884" rel="noopener">ready to do whatever it takes</a> while competing alongside the veteran floor genral.</p><p>“Just the energy. He’s a hell of a competitor. When Westbrook is on the team, he’s fully bought in. Nearly all of his former teammates have spoken highly of him, and Aaron Gordon’s remarks show that nothing has changed in that regard for the 35-year-old guard.</p><p>Of course, jelling with the team might take time. The Nuggets will be well aware of Westbrook’s weak spots on the court, and they will want to avoid putting him in positions where it will be difficult for him to contribute. But Westbrook has made their locker room vibes immaculate, which should be of big help considering the regular season grind that lies ahead.</p><h2>Russell Westbrook and the Nuggets brace for a Western Conference bloodbath</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Russell-Westbrook-on-April-28-2024.jpg"></figure><p>Russell Westbrook said that he <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/russell-westbrook-eye-opening-defense-michael-malone">wanted to sign with the Nuggets</a> due to the fact that they play the right way — with the ball always moving and the team giving up good shots to find great looks. The Nuggets, however, will have to reconfigure their offense if they were to keep up with the behemoths of the Western Conference.</p><p>The heartbeat of the team will continue to be the Nikola Jokic-Jamal Murray two-man game, but other than that, the Nuggets will have to find other reliable ways to generate points — especially from the perimeter. Last season, the Nuggets were the lowest-volume three-point shooting team in the league, and they will have to tilt the mathematical equation back in their favor if they were to improve upon last year’s effort.</p><p>Westbrook should help in that regard. He is an unselfish playmaker who works well with the ball in his hands, and the sheer force with which he attacks the basket should generate good looks from beyond the arc. Michael Porter Jr., Julian Strawther, and Dario Saric will thrive alongside Westbrook, while Peyton Watson could be a good pick-and-roll partner for the 35-year-old guard.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

While he is no All-Star, Porter Jr. is definitely one the most solid role players in the NBA today. His efficient support for the Nuggets is one of the main reasons why Nikola Jokic was able to lead the team to triumph in 2023. But the question now is, was he as efficient in the 2023-24 season?</p><p>Looking at his numbers, Porter Jr. averaged 16.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 1.5 assists. He shot 39.7% from deep and 48.4% overall. His numbers are still quite solid but was a little less efficient in shooting and scoring.</p><p>Come the postseason, the Nuggets failed to defend their title as they fell to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second round. During that series, Porter Jr. was on and off in terms of his scoring contributions. Given that his role focuses more on providing points, his performances weren’t necessarily the best. In Game 1 he scored 20 points then in Game 3 he had 21 points. Unfortunately, in the other five games, Porter Jr. didn’t even reach double-scoring figures. Aaron’s brother, Drew Gordon, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nuggets-news-aaron-gordon-brother-tragically-passes-away-accident">tragically passed away in a car accident</a> after the Nuggets had been eliminated from the playoffs. Gordon, who has been mourning his brother, had given very little details as to what he has been up to this offseason and what is to come for the 2024-25 NBA season.</p><p>While the 10-year veteran has yet to fully discuss what transpired this offseason, Gordon has made the decision to honor his late brother for the 2024-25 NBA season by switching his jersey number. Instead of his normal No. 50 Nuggets jersey, Gordon will honor his brother by <a href="https://x.com/EtienneCatalan/status/1828038486122734042" rel="noopener">switching</a> to No. 32, according to NBA jersey enthusiast Etienne Catalan. Gordon retired from playing professional basketball last summer and oftentimes supported his younger brother at Nuggets games.</p><p>Aaron changing his jersey number is simply a nod to his older brother, who influenced his basketball career before he even entered the league. Even so, this won’t make the grieving process any smoother or easier for the entire Gordon family.</p><p>In addition to changing his jersey number to honor his brother, Gordon also appeared to get a new tattoo this summer, with the initials “D” and “G” <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/C75iDQsMPaO/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;ig_rid=4ce04071-4220-44a0-8c1f-230479d32d00&amp;img_index=1" rel="noopener">spotted</a> in one of his Instagram posts.</p><p>As he enters the 2024-25 NBA season, the No. 32 jersey that Gordon is set to wear will be his third different number since being drafted fourth overall in 2014. He wore No. 00 with the Orlando Magic and No. 50 with the Nuggets over the last three-and-a-half seasons.</p><p>Last season, Gordon played in 73 total games, averaging 13.9 points and 6.5 rebounds per game while shooting 55.6 percent from the floor. From the Denver Nuggets organization to Damian Lillard and Magic Johnson, the NBA community mourned the tragedy that befell the older brother of Aaron Gordon. Johnson, in particular, <a href="https://x.com/MagicJohnson/status/1797351740804563064" rel="noopener">posted about it on X</a>.</p><p>“Continued condolences and prayers for the Gordon family following the loss of son, brother, husband, father, teammate and friend to many, Drew Gordon,” Johnson said. “Drew is the older brother of Denver Nuggets star Aaron Gordon and a former professional basketball player himself.”</p><p>On May 30, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nuggets-news-aaron-gordon-brother-tragically-passes-away-accident">Drew Gordon tragically passed away</a> in a car accident. As Johnson said, the 6-foot-9 forward carved out a career by playing the sport he loved.</p><p>Gordon played his first two years of college ball at UCLA. During his sophomore season, he put up 11.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.0 blocks in just six games before transferring to New Mexico. The forward would spend his junior and senior seasons with the Lobos. In his fourth and final year, Gordon averaged a double-double of 13.7 points and 11.1 boards in 35 games. His performance led many analysts to project him as a potential draft pick.</p><p>However, Gordon went undrafted, and he spent the majority of his career playing overseas. He also had stints with Summer League and G-League teams. He played a total of nine games in the NBA, suiting up for the Philadelphia 76ers.</p><h2><b>Other reactions to Drew Gordon’s passing</b></h2><p>As mentioned earlier, the Nuggets organization and Damian Lillard also reacted to Gordon’s passing.</p><p>The Nuggets also <a href="https://x.com/nuggets/status/1796389426416992291" rel="noopener">put out a post on X</a>, containing a picture of the Gordon brothers and a heartfelt message on behalf of the franchise.</p><p>“The Denver Nuggets organization is devastated to learn about the tragic passing of Drew Gordon. Besides Gordon, Michael Porter Jr. is also going through family ordeals of his own. After <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/michael-porter-jr-breaks-silence-brother-jontay-porters-gambling-investigation">his brother, Jontay Porter</a>, was banned from the NBA for gambling, two of Michael’s other brothers suddenly faced legal troubles.</p><p>And to make it worse for Porter, it all happened in the midst of Denver’s playoff run.
