But now that the 2024-25 season is almost upon us, the Nuggets have a renewed vigor about them as they look to put the disappointment of last year in the rearview mirror. The Nuggets may have lost one of their best contributors over the past three seasons in Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, but <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nuggets-news-russell-westbrook-shares-kobe-bryant-mentality-for-handling-boos-from-fans">brought in the ultimate X-factor</a> in the NBA to come off the bench: Russell Westbrook.</p><p>Westbrook has been arguably the most polarizing player in the NBA over the past decade. He has clear strengths in his game, but his deficiencies are also glaring, namely, he can’t space the floor consistently well.</p><p>But the Nuggets are welcoming the fact that he’s on the roster now, with Aaron Gordon commending the energy the former league MVP brings to the table. In fact, Gordon has already been touched by Westbrook’s contagious competitive streak, with Gordon saying that he’s <a href="https://twitter.com/ClutchPoints/status/1839417578005147884" rel="noopener">ready to do whatever it takes</a> while competing alongside the veteran floor genral.</p><p>“Just the energy. He’s a hell of a competitor. When Westbrook is on the team, he’s fully bought in. Nearly all of his former teammates have spoken highly of him, and Aaron Gordon’s remarks show that nothing has changed in that regard for the 35-year-old guard.</p><p>Of course, jelling with the team might take time. The Nuggets will be well aware of Westbrook’s weak spots on the court, and they will want to avoid putting him in positions where it will be difficult for him to contribute. But Westbrook has made their locker room vibes immaculate, which should be of big help considering the regular season grind that lies ahead.</p><h2>Russell Westbrook and the Nuggets brace for a Western Conference bloodbath</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Russell-Westbrook-on-April-28-2024.jpg"></figure><p>Russell Westbrook said that he <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/russell-westbrook-eye-opening-defense-michael-malone">wanted to sign with the Nuggets</a> due to the fact that they play the right way — with the ball always moving and the team giving up good shots to find great looks. The Nuggets, however, will have to reconfigure their offense if they were to keep up with the behemoths of the Western Conference.</p><p>The heartbeat of the team will continue to be the Nikola Jokic-Jamal Murray two-man game, but other than that, the Nuggets will have to find other reliable ways to generate points — especially from the perimeter. Last season, the Nuggets were the lowest-volume three-point shooting team in the league, and they will have to tilt the mathematical equation back in their favor if they were to improve upon last year’s effort.</p><p>Westbrook should help in that regard. He is an unselfish playmaker who works well with the ball in his hands, and the sheer force with which he attacks the basket should generate good looks from beyond the arc. Michael Porter Jr., Julian Strawther, and Dario Saric will thrive alongside Westbrook, while Peyton Watson could be a good pick-and-roll partner for the 35-year-old guard.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

While he is no All-Star, Porter Jr. is definitely one the most solid role players in the NBA today. His efficient support for the Nuggets is one of the main reasons why Nikola Jokic was able to lead the team to triumph in 2023. But the question now is, was he as efficient in the 2023-24 season?</p><p>Looking at his numbers, Porter Jr. averaged 16.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 1.5 assists. He shot 39.7% from deep and 48.4% overall. His numbers are still quite solid but was a little less efficient in shooting and scoring.</p><p>Come the postseason, the Nuggets failed to defend their title as they fell to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second round. During that series, Porter Jr. was on and off in terms of his scoring contributions. Given that his role focuses more on providing points, his performances weren’t necessarily the best. In Game 1 he scored 20 points then in Game 3 he had 21 points. Unfortunately, in the other five games, Porter Jr. didn’t even reach double-scoring figures. Gordon, who has been mourning his brother, had given very little details as to what he has been up to this offseason and what is to come for the 2024-25 NBA season.</p><p>While the 10-year veteran has yet to fully discuss what transpired this offseason, Gordon has made the decision to honor his late brother for the 2024-25 NBA season by switching his jersey number. Instead of his normal No. 50 Nuggets jersey, Gordon will honor his brother by <a href="https://x.com/EtienneCatalan/status/1828038486122734042" rel="noopener">switching</a> to No. 32, according to NBA jersey enthusiast Etienne Catalan. As Johnson said, the 6-foot-9 forward carved out a career by playing the sport he loved.</p><p>Gordon played his first two years of college ball at UCLA. During his sophomore season, he put up 11.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.0 blocks in just six games before transferring to New Mexico. The forward would spend his junior and senior seasons with the Lobos. In his fourth and final year, Gordon averaged a double-double of 13.7 points and 11.1 boards in 35 games. His performance led many analysts to project him as a potential draft pick.</p><p>However, Gordon went undrafted, and he spent the majority of his career playing overseas. He also had stints with Summer League and G-League teams. Jaden McDaniels then gave his two cents on what allowed the Nuggets big man to succeed.</p><p>Gordon went on a tear in the Game 4 victory, making all but one of his 12 field goal attempts, on his way to 27 points. This included five makes in the low block, three mid-range jumpers, and two three-pointers from the right wing.</p><p>During the 115-107 road win, Gordon also grabbed seven rebounds, dished out six assists, and had two blocked shots, helping the Nuggets tie the best-of-seven series at 2-2.</p><h2><b>Jaden McDaniels admits fault in allowing prime Aaron Gordon shooting in Game 4 loss</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Playoffs-Denver-Nuggets-at-Minnesota-Timberwolves-2.jpg"><figcaption>Bruce Kluckhohn-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>McDaniels was one of the Timberwolves’ primary defenders assigned to Gordon and admitted that his loose defense allowed him to get him into his groove. When asked by reporters what the team should do to Gordon in the next games, he said that the team should <a href="https://twitter.com/DaneMooreNBA/status/1790439753080304081" rel="noopener">stop the disrespect</a> on the Nuggets big man.</p><p>“Probably stop disrespecting [Aaron Gordon]. He[‘s] a NBA player, he can make shots. Like even myself, sometimes I don’t close out to him. If I was him, I’d be mad as well, and I’d try to make as many shots as I can. And that’s what he’s doing.”</p><p>In the Game 4 loss, McDaniels finished with 11 points on 4-for-8 shooting with two rebounds, one steal, and one block.</p><h2><b>Nuggets’ Jokic-Gordon twin tower combo key in series comeback</b></h2><p>Aaron Gordon’s Game 4 output allowed him to be the Nuggets’ secondary scorer, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nuggets-news-nikola-jokic-aaron-gordon-highlight-denvers-chemistry-after-tying-series-with-game-4-win">displaying his impressive chemistry</a> with primary scoring threat Nikola Jokic. The reigning league MVP posted a team-high 35 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists in the victory.</p><p>Similarly, Gordon played an efficient second-option scorer in Game 3, with a total of 13 points on five-for-seven shooting from the field with five assists. Jokic nearly tallied a triple-double of 24 points, 14 rebounds, nine assists, three steals, and three blocks.</p><p>During nine games in the playoffs so far, Gordon averaged 15.3 points on 60.9% shooting from the field with 7.2 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and 1.4 steals on 37.9 minutes on the floor. Jokic has been equally impressive, turning in averages of 27.6 points, 10.4 rebounds, 9.1 assists, 1.7 steals, and 0.7 blocks on 39.8 minutes on the floor in the postseason.</p><h2><b>Nuggets stronger after absorbing losses in series </b></h2><p>The victories in Game 3 and 4 have seemingly unleashed a different beast within the defending NBA champion Nuggets. Prior to Game 3, Head Coach Michael Malone reportedly <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nuggets-news-charles-barkley-calls-out-michael-malone-strategy-to-fire-up-denver">played back a series of clips</a> of league observers counting the team out after their lackluster showing in the first two games of the series at home.</p><p>Nikola Jokic admitted that he did not count their team out, but the losses only made the Nuggets stronger.</p><p>“It made us stronger. After squandering their home-court advantage against the Minnesota Timberwolves, many pronounced the defending champions dead. That’s what happens when you get blown out when the other team doesn’t have their DPOY winner, after all. However, the last two games have shown that you can never truly count out the champions.</p><p>With their backs against the wall, the Nuggets decided to lock in. A convincing Game 3 win sent a resounding message across the league: “We are not finished yet”. They followed that up with a resounding Game 4 dub. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nuggets-news-aaron-gordons-insane-game-4-lands-him-extremely-exlusive-3-man-nba-club">hero of Game 4 was Aaron Gordon</a>, who finished with 27 points on a near-perfect 11-for-12 from the field.</p><p>There was a pivotal moment during the game that seemed to signal the end for the Timberwolves. An eight-point flurry from the Nuggets to end the half seemed to be the early dagger for the team. That run was punctuated by a Jamal Murray buzzer-beater from half-court. Gordon commented on that mini-run and was <a href="https://twitter.com/VicLombardi/status/1789861265323483353" rel="noopener">amazed by that little run</a>, per Vic Lombardi.</p><p>“AG on his team (Nuggets) scoring 8 points in the final 20 seconds of the first half: “That was sick. I mean that shot by Jamal. Just siiiick.””</p><p>After an early storm from the Timberwolves, the Nuggets fought back and wrestled control. It was a back and forth affair, with Denver holding a slight edge. However, that last-second run at the end of the first half seemed to swing the momentum fully into Denver’s favor. From there, Denver cruised to a relatively easy win.</p><p>Aside from Gordon, Nikola Jokic played a massive hand in the win. The reigning MVP dropped 35 points as well as seven rebounds and assists in the winning effort. That win essentially reset the season and gave back homecourt advantage to the Nuggets.</p><h2><b>Nuggets taking back control</b></h2><p>The Nuggets got ambushed by the Timberwolves in Games 1 and 2 of the series. Still feeling the high from sweep of the Phoenix Suns, Minnesota took advantage of a sleepwalking Denver team and took an early 2-0 lead. The way they did too was incredible: the vaunted Jokic-led offense could not score more than 100 points against Minnesota’s defense. In Game 2, they could only muster up 80 points!</p><p>While a sweep prediction was still outlandish, many felt that the Timberwolves already had the clear upper hand. All they needed was another win in front of their fans, and they’ll get series point. How hard could it be?</p><p>Well, the Nuggets certainly didn’t make it easy. With their backs against the wall, Denver fought like hell to regain homecourt advantage. After blowing out the Timberwolves in Game 4, they had to stave off a feisty Minnesota team. Anthony Edwards was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/timberwolves-star-anthony-edwards-unworried-stance-on-nuggets-tying-series-with-game-4-victory">doing everything in his power</a> to give Minnesota the win, scoring 44 points in the losing effort.</p><p>In the end, the Nuggets got contributions from players other than Jokic. Aside from Gordon’s near-perfect game, Jamal Murray also chipped in 19 points. Denver now has full control of the series, as two of the last three games will be played at home (including a potential Game 7). Written off by many after the Minnesota Timberwolves ran out in dominant fashion to a 2-0 series lead in their second-round matchup in the 2024 NBA playoffs, the Nuggets showed why they are the reigning champion. Led by Nikola Jokic and Aaron Gordon, who scored 35 and 27 points, respectively, the Nuggets held off a late charge from the Timberwolves to take <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nuggets-news-jamal-murray-eye-opening-realization-that-led-to-tie-in-timberwolves-series">a 115-107 victory</a> in Game 4 to even up the series at 2-2.</p><p>The Timberwolves have boasted the league’s best defense all season long. And yet there the Nuggets were, carving up their defense in Game 4 to the tune of 57 percent shooting from the field. It’s a testament to how otherworldly of a force Jokic is on that end of the floor that it ends up rallying his teammates, particularly Gordon, to <a href="https://twitter.com/ClutchPoints/status/1789875699265700300" rel="noopener">pour out everything</a> they have on the court in the name of a victory.</p><p>“That guy right (Jokic) man, that’s where I learned to be selfless. I learned it from him. Game 2 was the ultimate vindication of the Timberwolves’ roster-building vision — supremely skilled athletes at every position who fly around on defense and hang their hats on wearing down the opposition.</p><p>But there is nothing quite like the experience of winning a championship; it gives teams the belief that they can always tap into a much better, much more connected side of them as they come up against opponents that have no qualms about gunning for their heads. Aaron Gordon is exactly that for the Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray-led Denver Nuggets. His ability to set good screens and grab boards is very vital to the team’s success. Whenever their two best players get locked up by the Minnesota Timberwolves, it becomes his time to shine and he wastes no opportunity.</p><h2><b>The Nuggets’ X-factor</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Denver-Nuggets-forward-Aaron-Gordon-50-goes-to-the.jpg"><figcaption>© Bruce Kluckhohn-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Aaron Gordon thrives in efficiency. This NBA Playoffs clash <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/timberwolves-news-minnesota-gets-troubling-warning-from-nba-legend-ahead-of-game-4-vs-nuggets">against the Timberwolves</a> showcased exactly that. He notched a 25+ point, five-rebound, and five-assist game on an insane 90% clip from all three levels of scoring. Only three players<a href="https://twitter.com/statmuse/status/1789847054631444813" rel="noopener"> have done</a> this in NBA Playoffs history, per StatMuse. The first one is former Most Valuable Player Charles Barkley and the other is the Point God himself, Chris Paul, who knocked down 100% of his field goal attempts.</p><p>Aaron Gordon went unconscious and picked apart the Timberwolves defense. He played a total of 41 minutes and did not look famished at all. At the end of the game, his totals added up to 27 points on 91.7% stroke from all three levels of scoring. Moreover, he also got seven rebounds and dropped six assists in this NBA Playoffs matchup. There were two cherries on top of this performance. One is that he got a steal and the other was his two blocks straight at the apex of his opponent’s shot.</p><p>The Nuggets also benefitted from him attracting defenders from weak side cuts and setting the usual back screens for Jamal Murray. If there is anyone that Coach Mike Malone can rely on to do the dirty work while also filling the stat sheet, it is clearly Gordon.</p><h2><b>Nuggets stuff the Timberwolves</b></h2><p>This series is now even with both squads winning two games apiece. A key adjustment <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nuggets-news-jamal-murray-shares-instant-classic-moment-kevin-harlan-before-halftime">that the Nuggets</a> had to make that way was cutting off the Timberwolves’ offensive momentum. It was a poison that they were willing to take if Anthony Edwards popped off early. However, they just did not let anyone else to find their offensive rhythm. Eventually, the star guard for the Timberwolves got exhausted from creating tough shots and was just not getting any makes. With everyone else not warmed up to finish, the Nuggets achieved their goal.</p><p>Another key momentum stopper was how the Nuggets just refused the Timberwolves to get anything going. They made it hard for any ball handler to find passing lanes and drive for easy kickouts. The fact that they also hounded the primary ball handler meant that they got seven steals. The Timberwolves also got stuffed at the rim six times.</p><p>With Nikola Jokic recording 35 points and Jamal Murray going for 19, Gordon was a big factor on both sides of the floor. His effort in executing while also bringing hustle and heart is impeccable. LA has blown double-digit leads in all three games in the series to trail three games to none and faces elimination the rest of the way against the defending champs after a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-news-lebron-james-collapses-nuggets-historic-levels">second-half collapse in Game 3</a> Thursday night.</p><p>It was a different game but the same story for the Lakers, who dropped their 11th straight game against the Nuggets dating back to last January. LA got out to a hot start, holding a 10-point lead after the first quarter. The Lakers’ offense went cold after that as they averaged 21 points across the second and third quarters. That saw their lead turn into an eight-point deficit by the start of the final frame. The Nuggets never trailed again after taking a 62-61 lead four minutes into the third quarter.</p><p>Aaron Gordon led the way for the Nuggets with a team-high 29 points, a new playoff career-high for the 28-year-old. Incredibly, Gordon’s Game 3 output is <a href="https://twitter.com/ClutchPoints/status/1783846817723191424" rel="noopener">more than</a> the entire Lakers bench contributed in Games 2 and 3 combined, per Nikki Goel. LA got 19 bench points in Game 3 after only six points from reserves in Game 2.</p><p>LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Austin Reaves combined for 81 points in Game 3, The other five Lakers who took a shot in the game scored 24, including a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-news-dangelo-russell-destroyed-for-freezing-cold-take-game-3-bench-antics">goose egg from D’Angelo Russell</a>, the first time he’s ever been shutout in an NBA playoff game.</p><h2><b>Lakers facing impossible hole with season on the line</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Lakers-bench.jpg"><figcaption>Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>There aren’t many <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-news-lebron-james-los-angeles-anthony-davis-denver-nuggets-nba-playoffs-austin-reaves">silver linings for the Lakers</a> so far in this series. They have to feel like they should’ve taken at least one of the three games, but instead have little time to make adjustments as their season hangs in the balance.</p><p>Teams need the full rotation to contribute to make a run at an NBA title. Perhaps it’s unfair to label the Lakers as a contender, but with two future Hall of Famers on the roster, it’s at least somewhat warranted.</p><p>Anthony Davis and LeBron James have done everything they can in this series. The duo has combined for at least 58 points in all three games and is shooting efficiently while doing so. A two-man team can’t win an NBA playoff series though, nor does it look like they can win a single game.</p><p>The Lakers had to be licking their chops for a rematch with the Nuggets after last year’s sweep in the Western Conference Finals. A year later, LA still is not up to par with Denver and it’s <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-most-to-blame-for-game-3-loss-to-nuggets">shown through 12 quarters of play.</a></p><p>The Lakers need more to be a true contender and it doesn’t look like that’s going to miraculously happen in time to turn this series – and their season – around. It’ll soon be back to the drawing board for the Lakers in what is sure to be another offseason full of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-news-fire-darvin-ham-chants-explode-amid-game-3-disaster-vs-nuggets">questions about the franchise’s future.</a></p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The reigning NBA Finals MVP put up a close-range shot that unfortunately bounced off the rim, then stumbled out of bounds, unable to get his own rebound. Gordon threw down some big dunks throughout the night, and he noticed some animated reactions from DeAndre Jordan throughout the night.</p><p>Gordon turned in a typically efficient night for Denver (16 PTS, 9 REB, 1 AST, 8/15 FGM) while playing solid defense to help Denver pick up a win over the league-leading Celtics. Gordon is having another strong season for the Nuggets (13.9 PPG, 6.5 RPG, 3.2 APG, 55.1 FG%), and he always seems to find a way to throw down some explosive dunks on a nightly basis.</p><p>Having been a member of “Lob City” with the Los Angeles Clippers, Jordan has thrown down his fair share of dunks throughout his career, and while he’s not exactly doing that anymore, he knows a good dunk when he sees one.
