Jamal Murray led the way with 23 points and six rebounds, Christian Braun had 20 points and three assists, while Cameron Johnson put up 15 points and four rebounds. It was an incredibly efficient night from the San Jose native. If it weren’t for a hamstring strain that slowed him down in Game 7 of their second-round playoff clash against the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Nuggets may have gotten past that hump. But now, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/denver-nuggets/nuggets-news-aaron-gordon-reveals-top-focus-for-2025-26-nba-season">Nuggets’ roster is more stacked</a>, and Gordon, during Media Day, made it clear that he’d be focusing on the defensive end of the court.</p><p>But for the Nuggets’ season-opening game against the Golden State Warriors, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/denver-nuggets/nuggets-news-aaron-gordon-50-point-game-unmatched-nba-history">Gordon decided that he’d cosplay as Stephen Curry</a> for the day. Gordon, who’s earned the nickname “Mr. Nugget”, finished with a career-high 50 points after making 10 triples, including eight consecutive at one point. Alas, it wasn’t enough as the Nuggets took a 137-131 loss at the hands of the still-unbeaten Dubs.</p><p>In the process of doing so, Gordon <a href="https://x.com/TroyRenck/status/1981581830345342992" rel="noopener">has now scored</a> the most points of any player in Nuggets history in a season-opener, breaking the record that Alex English set (47 points) nearly 40 years ago (October 25, 1985), according to Troy Renck of The Denver Post.</p><p>Gordon also drained a triple that could have given the Nuggets the win at the end of regulation had it not been for the actual Curry clapping back towards the end of regulation and in overtime en route to a 137-131 loss for Denver. He is continuing his incredible shooting pace that began last season, when he jumped from a low-30s shooter from deep (in terms of percentage) all the way to 43.6 percent.</p><p>The 30-year-old forward has embraced his role as a superstar supporting player, and the Nuggets have to be thanking their lucky stars that he’s still a part of this roster that has championship ambitions.</p><h2>Nikola Jokic, Nuggets run out of steam in OT</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Nikola-Jokic_006976.jpg"><figcaption>Bob Kupbens-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Jokic had a triple-double (21 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists) and was a star for the Nuggets on the night. At one point during the Denver Nuggets’ eventual 137-131 loss to the Golden State Warriors in overtime, Gordon made eight straight three-pointers. He was proving that the incredible three-point shooting development that he showed last season was no fluke, and no one is ever going to doubt him now after he finished with a total of 10 treys in a career-best, 50-point performance despite the defeat.</p><p>But in a bit of a funny coincidence, the last time any player made at least 10 triples in their first game of the season was back on the 23rd of December in 2020, when Terry Rozier, the recent FBI arrestee, made 10 long balls to open the 2020-21 campaign for the Charlotte Hornets. No one in NBA history has made more triples in a season-opening game than Gordon and Rozier.</p><p>This nugget of information was pointed out <a href="https://twitter.com/WorldWideWob/status/1981589948672479323" rel="noopener">rather hilariously</a> by the Inside the NBA crew following the Nuggets’ Thursday night defeat.</p><p>“This falls in the category of, ‘You can’t just make that stuff up.’ Aaron Gordon has made 10 three-pointers tonight, tying Terry Rozier in 2020 for most in a season-opener in NBA history. Rozier, whose career has fallen off the cliff over the past year or so, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/what-we-know-about-terry-rozier-chauncey-billups-fbi-investigations">was recently arrested by the FBI</a> for allegedly providing insider information leading to a $200,000 windfall that was, according to reports, counted and collected in his house.</p><p>The Nuggets forward’s incredible game should not be forgotten anytime soon, but it is in grave danger of falling by the headline wayside considering how hot the topic of Rozier’s (and Chauncey Billups’) arrests has been.</p><h2>It is not safe to bet on Aaron Gordon making 10 3s for the Nuggets ever again</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Fans-in-disbelief-of-Aaron-Gordon-unconscious-3-point-shooting-vs.-Warriors.jpg"><figcaption>Bob Kupbens-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Gordon became a 43.6 percent three-point shooter for the Nuggets last season on 3.4 attempts per contest. At one stretch, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/denver-nuggets/nuggets-news-fans-disbelief-aaron-gordon-3-point-shooting-warriors">Gordon was a perfect 8-of-8 from deep</a>.</p><p>His stellar effort, however, still wasn’t enough to beat the Warriors, as the Nuggets bowed in overtime, 137-131.</p><p>If it’s any consolation, the 30-year-old Gordon <a href="https://x.com/OptaSTATS/status/1981594371461185738" rel="noopener">became the first player</a> in NBA history to register 50 points and 10 three-pointers on at least 90% shooting from long distance, according to OptaSTATS.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">Aaron Gordon is the first player in NBA history with 50+ points and 10+ made threes on 90% or better three-point shooting. Over the years, Gordon has developed his outside shooting, making him a more efficient weapon instead of merely being a lob threat or a high-flying scorer.</p><p>Last season, the former Arizona standout shot a career-best 43.6% from three-point territory, a huge leap from his 29.0% in the previous campaign.</p><p>With Jokic constantly drawing double teams, Gordon, who added eight rebounds and a block against the Warriors, should continue to get clean looks from beyond the arc as the season progresses.</p><p>His 10 three-pointers versus Golden State tied Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier’s record for the most in a season opener. He now writes about sports instead as a form of therapy.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Denver Nuggets</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/denver-nuggets/nuggets-news-nikola-jokic-hilariously-vows-save-bruce-brown-career">Denver Nuggets arguably have the most improved team</a> of the offseason; they addressed their urgent need for more depth by adding the likes of Jonas Valanciunas, Bruce Brown, and Tim Hardaway Jr., and these additions were made possible by the room they created when they traded Michael Porter Jr. and his big contract to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for Cam Johnson. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/denver-nuggets/denver-nuggets-perfect-move-in-2025-nba-offseason">Nuggets recognized that they must maximize</a> Nikola Jokic’s prime and they did so with the way they bolstered their roster.</p><p>Last season, the Nuggets were playing seven-deep when it mattered the most and it seemed to catch up to them in the end. Aaron Gordon, in particular, was running on fumes by the time their season came to an end in Game 7 of their semifinal matchup against the Oklahoma City Thunder. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/denver-nuggets/nuggets-news-aaron-gordon-makes-confession-playing-through-injury-game-7">Gordon powered through a hamstring strain</a> to try and get the Nuggets to the Western Conference Finals, and it clearly hampered his performance, which was quite a shame considering how he was having an incredible postseason filled with plenty of clutch moments.</p><p>But for next season, it looks like Gordon is content to <a href="https://twitter.com/ClutchPoints/status/1972877256868737353" rel="noopener">fade more</a> into the background for the Nuggets. He’s more than content to simply do the little things to help the team win now that the team around him is much better and much deeper.</p><p>“I’ma just turn up on defense. We have so much talent on the offensive side, I’m not even really worried about it. I’m just gonna take what’s open for me. Do what I can to take the pressure off. But, really, I’m just worried about defense. I’ma just turn up on that end of the floor. As for Jokic, he was not dealing with an injury, but struggled to find his rhythm against the Thunder’s tenacious defense. The Serbian scored 20 points on 5-for-9 shooting to go with nine rebounds and seven assists while turning the ball over five times. Jokic averaged 29.6 points, 12.7 rebounds and 10.2 assists per game in the 2024-25 NBA regular season.</p><p>An early vacation for the Nuggets, however, means more time for Gordon to recover from his injury, which doesn’t seem serious enough to cause long-term concern for Denver.</p><p>Gordon concluded the 2024-25 NBA campaign with averages of 14.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists through 51 games. Christian Braun came next with 19 points and four rebounds, Jamal Murray had 13 points and three steals, while Gordon provided eight points and 11 rebounds.</p><p>With the loss, this marks the Nuggets’ second consecutive exit in the West Semis. It has been a while since Denver reached the mountaintop of NBA glory in 2023. While this group fought hard in the first few quarters, the Thunder’s relentless defense eventually became overwhelming, leading to a 125-93 blowout.</p><p>Denver fought valiantly throughout the series against this 68-win juggernaut. This group was coming off a physical seven-game war against the Los Angeles Clippers, and eventually, the wear and tear became too much. One of the drawbacks was that, in the second round, the Nuggets only got one day of rest between each contest.</p><p>Gordon, who was heroically playing on a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/denver-nuggets/nuggets-news-aaron-gordon-makes-confession-playing-through-injury-game-7">Grade 2 hamstring strain</a> that he suffered at the end of Game 6, did not hold back on letting the league know that this type of scheduling should change. The star forward <a href="https://x.com/big_business_/status/1924244904114319558" rel="noopener">expressed these thoughts</a> in the postgame press conference.</p><p>“I would appreciate it if there were a couple of days in between games instead of every other day,” Gordon said. “The product of the game would be a lot better. You’ll see a higher level of basketball. J<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/denver-nuggets/nuggets-news-jamal-murray-a-late-addition-game-6-injury-report-thunder">amal Murray was dealing with an illness</a>, Michael Porter Jr. was playing through a sprained left shoulder, and Aaron Gordon’s injury should’ve kept him out at least a month. But these guys played significant minutes on Sunday, not just because they’re gamers but because the franchise had no one else to replace their production.</p><p>There was friction within the Nuggets’ organization for most of the year, which led to the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/denver-nuggets/nuggets-news-michael-malone-fired">firing of head coach Michael Malone</a> and general manager Calvin Booth late in the regular season. While both are to blame for the alleged poor culture built by their disagreements, it’s clear that Booth did a poor job of building out this roster’s depth. And it’s a shame that this happened during Nikola Jokic’s prime.</p><p>The superstar center is the best player of this generation and is putting together a string of historic seasons. This group looked exhausted and depleted by the end, and it’s due to the lack of depth they’ve had for years.
