He then covered FAU Sports for The Palm Beach Post.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>In terms of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-heat-up-against-hall-of-fame-recruiting-pitches-for-haywood-highsmith">Miami Heat’s free agency</a> so far, it has been mostly re-signings of such players as Kevin Love and Thomas Bryant, but the one new face that is joining the roster is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/heat-news-miami-adds-backcourt-depth-with-latest-signing">veteran point guard Alec Burks.</a> Last played for the New York Knicks and Detroit Pistons the prior season, he now joins the Heat as he spoke for the very first time to the local media about why he chose the destination and how he fits with the team.</p><p>Last season, he started with the Pistons where he averaged 12.6 points while shooting 39.4 percent from the field and 40.1 percent from beyond the arch. He would them be acquired via the buyout market from the Knicks where the numbers went down due to the scoring volume of the team, averaging 6.5 points.</p><p>Despite likely having interest around the league, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/heat-news-why-kevin-love-had-no-doubt-about-re-signing-with-miami">Burks chose Miami as he talked</a> about admiring Heat Culture “from afar” and a conversation with Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra being the “real reason” he picked this destination.</p><p>“I just admired the Heat Culture from afar and I talked to Spo [Spoelstra] before I made my decision, we had a great conversation and I think that’s the real reason I picked the team,” Burks said. “I think I just I could fit in, I think what I bring I could just be a role player and help out and help winning.”</p><h2><b>How Burks can complement the Heat’s “Big Three”</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Alec-Burks-making-a-basket-for-the-Knicks-in-the-their-Game-7-loss-to-the-Pacers-in-the-second-round-of-the-playoffs.jpg"><figcaption>Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Burks signed a veteran minimum contract lasting one year and worth $3.3 million as he looks to add depth to the backcourt that looks to be shallow on the bench. Besides helping out players like Terry Rozier, the key will be complementing the current <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/heat-news-bam-adebayos-message-miami-contract-extension">“Big three” of the Heat</a> in Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, and Tyler Herro who Burks said to ClutchPoints that they are all “elite” and can easily <a href="https://x.com/ZachWeinberger/status/1810322971833282855" rel="noopener">“play off them.”</a></p><p>“Just, I think I can space the floor, all three of them are very elite,” Burks said of the featured <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-heat-offer-caleb-martin-turned-down-signing-76ers">three players on the Heat</a>. “So I think I just play my role and help out anyway I can, just play off them.”</p><p>“My versatility, that I can play a couple of positions and be able to shoot, space the floor for other guys to get into the paint and those two skills will help out a lot,” Burks continued about what his skillset can add to Miami.</p><h2><b>Burks on always staying ready and bouncing around the league</b></h2><p>As mentioned before, the opportunity with the Knicks was limiting, but he would have some crucial performances for them off the bench during the NBA Playoffs when the injuries were stacking against them. He averaged close to 15 points per game in the Eastern Conference semifinals round against the Indiana Pacers where in Game 7, he scored 26 points.</p><p>Even with the limitations on the Knicks, it was not something he hasn’t dealt with it before as it is crucial to always stay ready and it’s important to “be professional” which he’s looking to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/heat-news-why-miamis-rookies-are-ready-to-make-some-noise-in-2024-25">take with the Heat.</a></p><p>“Just be professional it’s not really a balance,” Burks said. “I’ve been in the situation before so just be ready, be professional You never know what’s gonna happen in the game so just always got to be ready. So that’s why I pride myself me being always ready.”</p><p>Even besides the Knicks and Pistons last season, Burks has been on five other teams, mostly with the Utah Jazz for the first seven and a half years as he was traded mid-season to the Cleveland Cavaliers. He would be candid in his traveling from team and team as being “tough” for his family, but says it’s “the business sometimes.”</p><p>“I think that kind of comes with the game, the business sometimes,” Burks said. “No, I haven’t moved around a few times, not by choice, but just have because that’s the NBA sometimes, but it’s always kind of tough to move, especially with my family, my kids, but you know, sometimes you got to do it for the right situation.”</p><p>At any rate, Burks is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-heat-added-to-list-of-lauri-markkanen-trade-suitors">looking to help the Heat improve</a> after last season where they went 46-36 and finished at the eighth seed for the second straight season.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

But <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/grading-knicks-pistons-trade-deadline-blockbuster-bojan-bogdanovic-alec-burks">last Thursday’s trade</a> that landed Bojan Bogdanovic and Alec Burks in New York should result in a Knicks team that is better prepared to tread water before their stars return. </p><h2><b>Injuries adding up for Knicks</b></h2><p>The Knicks are pretty banged up at the moment. Mitchell Robinson, who underwent ankle surgery in December, was the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-must-pivot-quickly-with-mitchell-robinson-out-for-season" rel="noopener">first major injury of the year</a>. Julius Randle suffered a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-julius-randle-injury-timeline-new-york" rel="noopener">shoulder injury</a> (non-shooting arm) in Miami in late January, and he will remain out until at least after the All-Star break.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-og-anunoby-out-for-at-least-3-weeks-after-elbow-surgery" rel="noopener">OG Anunoby will be out</a> for at least three weeks after recently undergoing a minor procedure to remove a loose bone fragment. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-isaiah-hartenstein-ruled-out-mavericks-game-concerning-injury" rel="noopener">Isaiah Hartenstein has been out</a> for two games with a strained Achilles that also cost him two games in January. And Jalen Brunson recently missed a game with an ankle injury — although he returned to action in a loss to the Indiana Pacers on Saturday night.</p><h2><b>Tom Thibodeau to blame?</b></h2><p>Head coach Tom Thibodeau has a reputation for leaning on his star players a little too much, and it’s assumed that it results in injuries. That’s probably overblown, as any coach in their right mind wants their superstars on the floor as much as possible. However, the narrative isn’t entirely false. </p><p>Coach Thibodeau inarguably leaves stars in too long after a game is already decided. And that absolutely impacts injuries. For example, Randle’s injury came with 4:27 remaining in the fourth quarter andwith  New York ahead by a comfortable margin (115-98). </p><p>Granted, 17 points is not a “safe” lead in the modern NBA. But it is squarely the coach’s responsibility to understand the pace of the game and manage his or her players accordingly. And Thibodeau is the last coach anyone expects to pull players when a game is ostensibly in hand.</p><p>But ultimately, Thibodeau is a brilliant coach, and you have to take the good with the bad. End of story. </p><h2><b>Trade deadline deal should alleviate strain on Knicks’ role players</b> </h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Bojan_Bogdanovic_looking_fierce.webp"><figcaption>John Jones-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Fortunately, the Knicks’ front office pivoted perfectly prior to the trade deadline, adding key depth to a team badly in need of it. </p><p>Prior to the trade (and including Saturday’s game against the Pacers), New York was leaning heavily on a select few players. In particular, Josh Hart and Precious Achiuwa were averaging more than 38 and 40 minutes over the last five games, respectively. That’s not sustainable, at least not if they want to win.</p><p>By adding Bogdanovic and Burks — and not sending out any rotation pieces — the Knicks’ just added important reinforcements that should help simply by adding healthy, talented bodies. </p><p>Once healthy, New York now boasts a minimum of nine players who should be in the team’s  rotation: Brunson, Donte DiVincenzo, Anunoby, Randle, Hartenstein, Robinson, Bogdanovic, Burks, and Hart. And that does not include Miles McBride, Achiuwa or Jericho Sims. </p><p>And if New York gets entirely healthy before to the playoffs, look out. Since the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/what-knicks-getting-og-anunoby-trade-what-comes-next" rel="noopener">December 30 Anunoby trade, </a>the Knicks have been a defensive behemoth, holding teams to less than 104 points per game. That’s the team that Knicks’ fans are hoping to see in the stretch run of this season.</p><p>Hopefully, Bogdanovic and Burks can steady the ship until everyone returns. And once that happens, New York is even deeper and more difficult to prepare for.</p><h2>Health is still a hurdle, even after the trade</h2><p>Even with Bojan Bogdanovic and Alec Burks in tow, the Knicks must still hope for health. Julius Randle must return as the player he was in January. OG Anunoby must do the same. And everyone else must remain healthy. But that’s not all that has to go right. The Knicks must also win games, and do so against some good competition. The Knicks currently have the <a href="https://www.tankathon.com/remaining_schedule_strength" rel="noopener">13th-hardest remaining schedule</a>, according to Tankathon. They have two games remaining against the Boston Celtics, one against the Cleveland Cavaliers, one against the Denver Nuggets, and one against the Oklahoma City Thunder. </p><p>Fortunately, the Knicks’ post-All-Star break schedule is spread out, meaning they can allow their players a requisite amount of time to heal up without hurting their playoff seeding too badly — although getting healthy sooner than later is ideal.</p><h2>Possible silver linings for Knicks</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Alec_Burks_shooting_the_ball.webp"><figcaption>John Jones-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>One thing that could realistically swing the Knicks’ fortunes is Robinson returning from injury. The Knicks have the seventh-best defensive rating in the league, giving up 112.7 points per 100 possessions. Imagine adding the Blockness Monster to the fray? New York hasn’t had Robinson available since the Anunoby trade, and the two of them together could easily anchor one of the best defenses in the league. </p><p>Robinson is a legitimate defensive presence. He was averaging a career-worst 1.3 blocks per game prior to injuring his ankle in December, but that’s probably because opponents firmly understand that it’s unwise to challenge him. He is also an offensive rebounding machine, averaging a league-best 5.3 offensive rebounds per game.</p><p>Robinson is scheduled to return to on-court activities following the All-Star break. And while there is currently no official timeline on an actual return to the Knicks’ line-up, it is widely expected to happen <i>before</i> the playoffs.</p><p>The All-Star break is just around the corner, and New York only has two games remaining before it. While every game is important, the Knicks would be well-served to allow their team a little extra time for some much deserved rest and relaxation.</p><p>But after the break, the Knicks should hope their players are healthy and ready to roll. If they are, the sky is the limit. If they are not, this Cinderella season could quickly turn into a nightmare.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

There’s obviously no guarantee that those second round picks ever amount to anything, but second rounders have become a little more valuable in recent years.</p><p>Second round picks are good, cap friendly way to develop younger players and stash them in the G League. For a team like the Pistons, having more draft capital is a good thing.</p><p>On the Knicks side of things, they get two veteran wing players capable of putting up points. While the Knicks lost Quentin Grimes in the trade, this move can pay off in a big way. Bogdanovic had been averaging 20.2 points per game while shooting 46.8 percent from the field and 41.5 percent from three point range. Burks had been averaging 12.6 points and shooting 40.1 percent from three point range.</p><p>The Knicks are currently 33-19 and in fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings. Las Vegas certainly seems to think so, as the latest Knicks updated NBA Finals odds after the deal makes it clear the oddsmakers think the team is now more of a title contender than before.</p><p>After the Knicks NBA trade deadline move for Bogdanovic and Burks, New York went from +2200 to <a href="https://sportsbook.fanduel.com/navigation/nba?tab=nba-finals" rel="noopener">win the NBA Finals</a> to +1600 odds, according to FanDuel.</p><p>On Thursday, the day of the deadline, the Knicks sent Quentin Grimes, Evan Fournier, Malachi Flynn, Ryan Arcidiacono, and two second-round picks to the Pistons for Bojan Bogdanovic and Alec Burks.</p><p>The reason the Knicks updated NBA Finals odds dropped so much is that this is a great deal for New York. The team didn’t give up much at all, with Grimes at 20.2 minutes per game the biggest piece. What they got back is a fine depth player in Burks and a big-bodied shooter and scorer in Bogdanovic who should immediately become a key part of the rotation.</p><p>While this Knicks trade made the team better for sure, it didn’t necessarily get the team to where it needs to be to win a championship, at least according to the odds.</p><p>At +1600, the Knicks are now tied with the Phoenix Suns as the team with the fifth-best odds to win it all. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-bojan-bogdanovic-alec-burks-pistons-trade-deadline-deal" rel="noopener">Pistons</a> also made a deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, acquiring Danuel House and a 2024 second-round pick.</p><p>With the players the Pistons have brought in, it makes sense to waive a veteran like Joe Harris, who has only played 16 games, averaging 2.4 points, 0.8. rebounds and 0.6 assists in those games this season for the Pistons.</p><p>Harris is a veteran and could possibly now land with a team that is trying to win, rather than a rebuilding team like the Pistons this season. It will be interesting to see where he lands, and if he can catch on in a contending team’s rotation.</p><p>The Pistons are clearly trying to make the most of this deadline. The deal with the Knicks makes a lot of sense, acquiring a young player who has potential to be a good three-and-d player like Quentin Grimes fits the direction of the team. The same goes for getting some second-round picks.</p><p>As the Pistons sit with the worst record in the NBA, they are trying to acquire some young talent and assets to build for the future. Killian Hayes still is on the roster and is someone who could be moved before the NBA Trade Deadline. This team is loading up for a playoff run, as New York is playing at a high level midway through the season. However, there is some concerning news regarding the reason for the deal, as OG Anunoby’s injury reportedly played a part.</p><p>Anunoby’s injury <a href="https://twitter.com/IanBegley/status/1755635244412117093" rel="noopener">was recently changed</a> from an elbow inflammation to a bone spur irritation, according to Ian Begley of SNY TV. Reports indicate that the uncertainty around OG Anunoby’s status led to the Knicks trading for Bogdanovic and Burks.</p><p>“Told that uncertainty/concern around OG Anunoby’s injury has factored into NYK’s deadline approach. Heard Anunoby had been making progress late last week, but he’s missed games since then. NYK yesterday changed injury description from elbow inflammation to bone spur irritation.”</p><p>That’s not an ideal situation for the Knicks. OG Anunoby has been going off since being traded to New York from the Toronto Raptors. It’s not clear when he’ll overcome this injury. However, New York made sure to find some strong depth to make up for his absence for the time being.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-fans-react-bombshell-trade-bojan-bogdanovic-alec-burks" rel="noopener">Considering the Knicks</a> made this move, we may not see Anunoby return for some time. The franchise may aim to keep him out of the lineup until after the NBA All-Star break. If that’s the case, the star guard could be out for another several weeks. It really just depends how his bone spur irritation develops.</p><p>With that said, the Knicks should remain competitive even with OG Anunoby out. Bogdanovic and Burks are consistent players and can play around the perimeter well. They may have waited until nearly the last minute to do so, but they got it done. New York sent Quentin Grimes, Malachi Flynn, Evan Fournier, and Ryan Arcidiacono to Detroit for Bojan Bogdanovic and Alec Burks. The Knicks also sent two second-round picks to the Pistons in the deal. </p><h2>Knicks trade grade</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Knicks_news_Bojan_Bogdanovic_Alec_Burks_traded_to_New_York_from_Pistons_in_mega_deadline_deal.webp"></figure><p>New York added two impactful scorers and playmakers at a point in time when they badly need talented (and healthy) bodies. The Knicks are <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-new-york-injury-roster-nba-trade-deadline" rel="noopener">quite banged up at the moment</a>, as they are missing three starters for an undefined amount of time. While at least Julius Randle and OG Anunoby are expected to return shortly after the All-Star break, there is no guarantee regarding anyone’s return. Every game matters in playoff seeding, so this trade should help shore up the Knicks’ short-term rotation, as well as inject talent for a deep playoff run. </p><p>Bojan Bogdanovic is an incredibly talented player. He is averaging 20.2 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.5 assists in 32.9 minutes per game. He is shooting 41.5 percent on three-point attempts, 51.8 percent on two-point attempts, and 77.9 percent on free throws. ClutchPoints recently discussed the possibility of a <a href="http://Grading%20Knicks-Pistons%20trade%20deadline%20blockbuster%20involving%20Bojan%20Bogdanovic,%20Alec%20Burks">Bogdanovic-to-New York trade</a>  and we mentioned that the Knicks’ stellar defensive should neutralize any harm done by the veteran.</p><p>Alec Burks was a coach Tom Thibodeau favorite in his time in New York from 2020-2022. His performance in Detroit looks quite similar to what he did for the Knicks a few years ago. He is averaging 12.6 points, 2.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and less than 1 turnover in 21 minutes per game this season. </p><p>To summarize, the Knicks are adding two helpful rotation pieces in exchange for (at most) one — and that one (Grimes), has been in Thibodeau’s doghouse for most of this season. Adding them both to a Knicks team that also boasts Jalen Brunson, Donte DiVincenzo, OG Anunoby, Julius Randle, Mitchell Robinson, Isaiah Hartenstein, Josh Hart, Deuce McBride, Precious Achiuwa, and Jericho Sims translates to an <i>even more</i> talented roster (when healthy) that’s capable of competing with the Eastern Conference’s elite. Their only problem when healthy might be figuring out who won’t be in the rotation.</p><p><b>Grade: B+</b></p><h2><b>Pistons trade grade</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Knicks_leveraging_Quentin_Grimes_draft_picks_for_potential_trade_deadline_upgrade.webp"></figure><p>The Pistons’ vision is a little less clear. Adding second-round picks was probably the biggest draw for Detroit. Given Quentin Grimes’ age and skill set, he is a natural fit alongside Cade Cunningham or Jaden Ivey, regardless of whom is the long-term starter. If Pistons coach Monty Williams can get Grimes to recapture his rookie-season success, he could be a long-term fit. </p><p>Realistically, Detroit doesn’t have interest in Evan Fournier. His team option is very unlikely to be picked up by the rebuilding Pistons, but he should at least be back on the floor and in a team’s rotation — so, good for him. Malachi Flynn and Ryan Arcidiacono may or may not see playing time. Anything is possible on a 7-43 team.</p><p>Pistons fans have a legitimate beef regarding how little they got back for Bogdanovic. But the market sets the price, not the teams. </p><p><b>Grade: C-</b></p><p>This was a savvy move from the Knicks’ perspective. It’s pretty clear that Dejounte Murray, Jordan Clarkson, and/or Bruce Brown were going to be too expensive — and they may not move at all prior to Thursday’s deadline. Bojan Bogdanovic is an above-average scorer and Alec Burks is a worker with whom Tom Thiboeau is already quite familiar. This move can help the Knicks get by until they are fully healthy. Once that happens, it will bolster an already talented team, and possibly gets them deeper in the playoffs than they’ve been in nearly 25 years.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The biggest one was the New York <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-bojan-bogdanovic-alec-burks-pistons-trade-deadline-deal" rel="noopener">Knicks acquiring Bojan Bogdanovic</a> and Alec Burks in a massive blockbuster with the Detroit Pistons.</p><p>It was a stunning move by New York, a team that is already tied for 3rd in the Eastern Conference and just a hair behind the Cleveland Cavaliers for the 2nd spot. As per the rumor mill, the Pistons are looking for <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-pistons-outlook-on-4-blue-chippers-complicates-dejounte-murray-zach-lavine-trade" rel="noopener">trades that improve the roster</a>, although it makes more sense for them to sell off some of their veteran pieces, such as Bojan Bogdanovic, Alec Burks, and Monte Morris, given their current record of 5-39.</p><p>But the Pistons’ decision-making won’t be as straightforward. According to James L. Edwards III of The Athletic, the Pistons <a href="https://theathletic.com/5225829/2024/01/25/pistons-nba-trade-deadline-2024/" rel="noopener">“are not actively shopping”</a> Bogdanovic and Burks, while it is “not a given” that they will trade away Morris since the team wants him around for backcourt depth.</p><p>Nonetheless, it will all depend on what the Pistons can get in a trade for those veterans that will determine whether or not they decide to pull the trigger. Per Edwards, Detroit is looking for “a good first-round draft pick and a good player” in exchange for Bojan Bogdanovic, while “two really good second-round picks, at minimum” could encourage them to trade away Alec Burks.</p><p>If the Pistons don’t find a team that meets their asking price in a trade, there appears to be <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-pistons-have-explored-bojan-bogdanovic-trade-talks-but-will-he-get-dealt" rel="noopener">no urgency</a> for them to sell low. The team would just “wait until the summer” before they decide what to do with Bogdanovic if he doesn’t net them an acceptable trade return, as they have a team option <a href="https://www.spotrac.com/nba/detroit-pistons/bojan-bogdanovic-8083/" rel="noopener">worth $19 million</a> for the sharpshooting Croat for next season. Meanwhile, they reportedly have belief that they can re-sign Burks, an impending unrestricted free agent, should he remain with the team until season’s end.</p><p>In the end, Edwards, one of the most plugged in Pistons beat reporters, feels like this “likely won’t be a splashy deadline for Detroit”. But contending teams could certainly use the services of a few of their veterans. He has covered athletics at the University of Michigan and the University of Southern California and is now serving as an Associate Editor at ClutchPoints.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The Detroit Pistons made history on Tuesday night, but not the kind of history that anyone wants to be a part of. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pistons-news-jaden-ivey-passionate-response-cade-cunningham-speech" rel="noopener">The Pistons lost their</a> record-setting 27th game in a row on Tuesday against the Brooklyn Nets, and they now hold the record for the longest NBA losing streak in a single season. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/where-pistons-sit-on-nbas-longest-losing-streak-list" rel="noopener">Detroit hasn’t won a game</a> since late October, and at this point, who knows when this crazy streak will come to an end.</p><p>All 27 losses have been painful for Pistons fans, but Tuesday’s loss against the Nets was painful for a lot of different reasons. Obviously, this loss broke the record. Detroit now has the longest single-season losing streak in NBA history. However, it was also painful because the Pistons were up by double digits in this game, and because their star player, Cade Cunningham, put up 41 points. He did all that he could, but it wasn’t enough.</p><p>Cade Cunningham went off on Tuesday for the Pistons, but it wasn’t enough to get them the win. He was scorching hot at the end of the game, and a late play while Detroit trailed by five is what angered Pistons fans the most. Cunningham was red hot, but instead of him taking the shot on this crucial possession, Alec Burks chucked up a heinous three-point attempt that clanked off the  rim, and the Nets got the rebound to essentially seal the victory.</p><p>To make matter worse for Burks, he was seen laughing on the court with Nets players after the Pistons had lost the game. On Thursday, the <a href="https://twitter.com/Pistons_PR/status/1674483862863224840" rel="noopener">team officially announced</a> it will pick up the player options on the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pistons-make-official-alec-burks-contract-decision/" rel="noopener">contracts of Alec Burks</a>, Isaiah Livers, and Eugene Omoruyi. This trio will now make $10.4 million, $1.8 million, and $1.9 million, respectively, in the 2023-24 NBA season.</p><p>Alec Burks and Isaiah Livers were both significant role players last season. Livers played 23.1 minutes per game over 52 games and averaged 6.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 0.8 assists per game while shooting 36.5% from 3-point range. Burks played 22.0 minutes per game in 51 games and averaged 12.8 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.2 assists while shooting 41.4% from deep.</p><p>Both of these players have value for the Pistons next season but for different reasons. Livers is a 2021 second-round pick with solid upside. He’s shown that potential in spurts, but injuries have limited him to just 71 games in two seasons.</p><p>As for Burks, he is an excellent bench scorer and a 40-plus-percent 3-point shooter, which is incredibly valuable to any NBA team. At 31, he doesn’t necessarily fit the Pistons’ current timeline, but with his skills, statistics, and expiring contract, he will be an incredible trade asset from now until the 2024 NBA trade deadline.</p><p>Lastly, Eugene Omoruyi is a 36-year-old journeyman who has played for the Dallas Mavericks and Oklahoma City Thunder. Omoruyi signed with the Pistons after his effort and energy impressed the powers that be after playing on two 10-day contracts last season. The Pistons <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/detroit-believes-in-me-ausar-thompson-gushes-over-new-teammates" rel="noopener">selected athletic forward Ausar Thompson</a> #5 overall in the 2023 NBA Draft. The move came less than a month after their hiring of Monty Williams as <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pistons-news-monty-williams-nba-highest-paid-coach" rel="noopener">the NBA’s highest paid coach</a>.</p><p>Now, the Pistons have re-upped on one of their best shooters from last season. The team announced Tuesday that it had officially picked up the $10.5 million player option for Alec Burks.</p><p>Burks <a href="https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1673846533689692161" rel="noopener">averaged 12.8 points</a> and 3.1 rebounds last season while shooting 41.4% from three-point range. Burks’ role off the bench is key considering the team <a href="https://www.teamrankings.com/nba/stat/three-point-pct" rel="noopener">ranked 21st in the NBA</a> last in shooting from downtown.</p><p>The former Colorado Buffaloes star was taken 12th overall in 2011 by the Utah Jazz and has since bounced around to six different NBA teams. He’s averaged 11 points or better in six of the past seven seasons.</p><p>The news was announced on the same day the Pistons <a href="https://www.freep.com/story/sports/nba/pistons/2023/06/27/detroit-pistons-team-options-isaiah-livers-alec-burks/70360915007/" rel="noopener">picked up the $1.8 million</a> team option for Isaiah Livers. Livers, a former University of Michigan Wolverines standout, was sidelined with injuries for much of last season. Edwards agreed, even stating that he would be “absolutely floored” if Detroit opted to decline the team option on Burks.</p><p>Burks, 31, is a talented player <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-rumors-celtics-trade-interest-in-alec-burks-could-help-jalen-brunson-pursuit" rel="noopener">who has reportedly drawn interest</a> from various teams around the league. He’s been in the league since the 2011-12 season, when he made his debut with the Utah Jazz. Burks has never been a superstar-caliber player, but he’s reliable. His career points per game average currently sits at 10.8. He’s also shot over 38 percent from beyond the arc for his career.</p><p>The Pistons acquired Burks ahead of the 2022-23 campaign. Detroit had lofty expectations with Cade Cunningham seemingly on the verge of becoming a true superstar. However, Cunningham suffered an injury and the Pistons labored throughout the year. Burks, however, was a bright spot.</p><p>He averaged 12.8 points per game while shooting 41.4 percent from deep. Burks’ veteran leadership also did not go unnoticed by Detroit.</p><p>The Pistons are hoping for a better and healthier all-around 2023-24 campaign. The roster features plenty of young and exciting talent, but Detroit will surely want to keep some veterans on the team as well.
