The former Miami Hurricane was one of Washington’s three first-round rookies entering last season, but he was the only one not selected in the lottery. Now, he might be the best piece of the young core.</p><p>George doesn’t have Bilal Coulibaly’s perimeter defensive skills, Sarr’s rim-protection, Tre Johnson’s three-point prowess, or Bub Carrington’s midrange effectiveness, but he’s the most versatile of the group. Although <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/washington-wizards/wizards-news-bilal-coulibaly-expected-miss-beginning-season-thumb-surgery">Coulibaly is out with a thumb injury</a>, Wednesday’s game showed that reality.</p><p>George had the most points, assists, and blocks among him, Sarr, Johnson, and Carrington in the contest. The 21-year-old had two fewer rebounds than the seven-foot Sarr, and his field goal percentage was just 3.3 percent lower than Sarr’s despite taking five more shots. He also had just one fewer three-point shot made in two fewer attempts than Johnson, while he, Johnson, and Carrington each had a steal.</p><p><b>UPDATE: </b>George followed that up with a career night in Friday’s 117-107 win over the Dallas Mavericks, notching 34 points (11-15 FG, 7-9 3-point) with 11 rebounds, four assists, three blocks, and two steals over 35 minutes. He led the team in points and rebounds while also tying Sarr for the most blocks. Additionally, he tied for second in assists and steals while topping the squad with a plus-14 plus/minus.</p><p>Although Washington is still figuring out who will be its franchise cornerstone, George is making the best case for that title so far. For example, his <a href="https://www.nba.com/stats/players/advanced?Season=2024-25&amp;TeamID=1610612764&amp;dir=A&amp;sort=NET_RATING" rel="noopener">-10.1 net rating</a> was the best of the young core sans Johnson, who played his one year at Texas University, per NBA Advanced Stats. Net rating is the offensive rating minus the defensive rating, both of which the 2024 No. 24 overall pick also topped the young core in.</p><p>George also averaged just five points on 30.8 percent shooting (12.5 percent 3-point) with 2.8 boards last October, but more than doubled those scoring and rebounding averages in February while adding 9.9 points to his field-goal percentage and almost quadrupling his three-point clip. The work didn’t stop after the season ended in April, as the 6-foot-8, 200-pounder got more reps in during Summer League and with the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/washington-wizards/wizards-news-wiz-kids-offering-fans-hope-overseas-tournaments">Canadian national team in the FIBA Americup</a>. Now, he’s a different player.</p><p>If George continues playing like he did on Wednesday and Friday, he’s a lock to make his first Rising Stars team and be one of the NBA’s most improved hoopers. Most importantly, he’ll give hope to a Washington fanbase that hasn’t experienced an Eastern Conference Semifinals appearance since 2017 or a conference finals berth since 1979.</p><p>It’ll take more than George’s ascension for the franchise to reach those heights again, but between the development of the aforementioned players as well as whoever it drafts in the 2026 lottery, there’s reason to believe it will in the coming years.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

As group play continues, France’s national team is one of the favorites. The team is headlined by <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/olympics/olympics-news-france-players-effort-vs-usa-has-nba-fans-making-urgent-requests">Olympic standout Guerschon Yabusele</a>, as well as young talent like Zaccharie Risacher and Alex Sarr. However, the Washington Wizards center’s tournament is over.</p><p>Sarr and France played against Slovenia on Tuesday, taking on one of the biggest stars in the tournament in Luka Doncic. The Wizards center left the game with a lower body injury and did not return to the floor. According to The Athletic’s Josh Robbins, Sarr’s <a href="https://x.com/JoshuaBRobbins/status/1962944181560561850" rel="noopener">tournament is over</a>. Fortunately, Washington does not think that he is going to miss the start of the NBA’s regular season.</p><p>“Although Alex Sarr will miss the remainder of the EuroBasket tournament because of a left calf injury, Wizards officials expect that he’ll be ready for the start of the season, a team source said. The injury will not require surgery,” Robbins said.</p><p>That news is a relief for Wizards fans everywhere. Sarr settled in during the second half of his rookie season and finished fourth in Rookie of the Year voting behind Risacher, Stephon Castle, and Jaylen Wells. However, any and all injuries are reason for concern for a player of his stature. Washington is unlikely to rush his recovery as the season looms on the horizon.</p><p>Sarr is an important player, both for France’s national team and the Wizards. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/washington-wizards/washington-wizards-2025-nba-draft-grades">Washington added even more young talent in this year’s draft</a> and are an intriguing team heading into next season. However, a lot of their plans rely on Sarr developing into a star down low comparable to fellow Frenchman Victor Wembanyama. His injury throws a wrench in that process for now.</p><p>Sarr is going to stay with his team and encourage Yabusele and the others as EuroBasket continues. First place votes were worth two points, and second place votes were worth one. Sarr finished with 150 points, 12 more than Ware for the final first team spot. Carrington had 53 points, one more than Utah Jazz guard Isaiah Collier for the final second team spot. Meanwhile, Washington guard Kyshawn George got one second place vote.</p><p>Sarr is the first teenager in NBA history to make 100-plus threes and block 100-plus shots in a season, while Carrington played all 82 games and made a record amount of threes for Wizards rookies in a season (121). They are also the first team to have three rookies (Sarr, Carrington, George) make 100-plus threes in one campaign, and they’re the only squad besides the Memphis Grizzlies (Wells, Edey) to have two All-Rookie players this year.</p><p>Between Bilal Coulibaly, Sarr, Carrington, George, AJ Johnson, and whoever they draft at Nos. 6 and 18 this summer, the Wizards will have one of the deepest stashes of young talent in the NBA. The 6-foot-10-inch, 246-pounder also hit a game-winning fadeaway jumper at the buzzer in the second round of the NCAA Tournament against Colorado. The shot brought the score to 72-71, so the Terrapins would’ve lost had he missed.</p><p>Queen profiles as a Brad Miller/Zach Randolph type <a href="https://www.nbadraft.net/players/derik-queen/" rel="noopener">who is crafty in the post</a> and has the potential to defend all positions at the next level, via NBADraft.net. However, the 20-year-old is inconsistent defensively and doesn’t yet have a reliable three-point shot. He could be a good compliment to Sarr in the frontcourt, who is a stretch big that already excels as a shot blocker.</p><p>Floor spacing is paramount in this era of positionless basketball, which means that competent three-point shooting is necessary for any player who isn’t a defensive anchor, a la Rudy Gobert. Still, Sarr’s shot blocking and three-point shooting could cover up Queen’s weaknesses and magnify his excellence in the paint and midrange.</p><p>Wizards general manager Will Dawkins’ selections on June 25 will give further insight into his preferred type of player. So far, the former Oklahoma City Thunder executive has built the young core around two-way/“three-and-D” types.</p><p>With that being said, Dawkins and team President Michael Winger have only been with the organization since 2023. However, the No. 2 overall pick was one of the best players in the 2024 draft class, even though NBA awards voters didn’t give him credit.</p><p>Sarr was left off the 2024-25 <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/spurs-stephon-castle-believes-rookie-year-locked-up">Rookie of the Year ballot in favor of Stephon Castle</a>, Zaccharie Risacher, and Jaylen Wells. Castle is the <a href="https://www.foxsports.com/articles/nba/2024-25-nba-rookie-of-the-year-odds-and-favorites" rel="noopener">favorite to win</a>, as he should be, via FOX Sports. The San Antonio Spurs guard led the class in total points (1,190) and steals (74) while ranking second in games played (81) and third in assists (332). However, Sarr had a case to be in the second or third slots.</p><p>The seven-footer was second in the class with 13 points and 1.5 blocks per game, as well as fifth with 6.5 rebounds. He’s also the third-ever player to tally 800-plus, 150-plus assists, and 80-plus blocks before turning 20. The first two were LeBron James and Tracy McGrady.</p><p>Sarr’s main weakness was shooting accuracy. The French international’s 39.4 percent field goal clip (30.8 percent 3 PT) is below par for a center and ranked behind both Risacher (45.8 percent, 35.5 percent 3 PT) and Wells (42.5 percent, 35.2 percent 3 PT). His 27.1 minutes per game was second in the class only to teammate Bub Carrington (30), so he relied more on playing time than efficiency to inflate his numbers.</p><p>Still, Sarr deserves an All-Rookie First Team placement, which is given to the five best rookies in the league. The 19-year-old finished third in NBA.com’s <a href="https://www.nba.com/news/kia-rookie-ladder-april-9-2025-edition" rel="noopener">final rookie ladder</a> and was labeled First Team-worthy by Steve Aschburner. His other selections were Castle, Risacher, Wells, and Kel’el Ware.</p><p>Who is Sarr’s main competitor for First Team selection outside of the Rookie of the Year finalists?</p><h2><b>Zach Edey could take Alex Sarr’s spot</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Zach-Edey-Grizzlies.jpg"><figcaption>Troy Wayrynen-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Edey is the likeliest candidate in the field to snag the fifth First Team slot, as the fellow big man was productive in his own right. The 7-foot-4-inch, 305-pounder averaged 9.2 points per game on 58 percent shooting (34.6 percent 3 PT) with 8.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks across 21.5 minutes. However, the three-point percentage is deceiving, as he took just 52 attempts all season, while Sarr took 341.</p><p>If Edey does get selected over Sarr, it’ll be due to his shooting efficiency, rebounding, and only having 0.2 fewer blocks per game. However, the latter rookie deserves credit for producing with less talent around him. The Memphis Grizzlies have two-time All-Stars Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr., while the Wizards’ only former All-Star (Khris Middleton) is past his prime.</p><p>Additionally, Sarr is a more effective playmaker. The former Australian League player averaged 2.4 assists against 1.7 turnovers, while Edey posted one assist against 1.3 turnovers. Sarr showcased his ability to bring the ball up the court and space the floor, while Edey is more of a rim presence who occasionally ventures outside.</p><p>Unfortunately for Sarr, players on winning or playoff teams often get favored over those on lottery squads. That doesn’t guarantee Edey placing over him, but it’s another factor in the Purdue alum’s favor. The Grizzlies are playing the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Quarterfinals, while the Wizards finished 18-64.</p><p>Only time will tell if Sarr gets the credit he deserves, but he’s proven that he’s one of the most exciting young big men to watch in the NBA moving forward.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
