His presence is definitely missed, as he’s been one of the breakout players on the team this season.</p><p>With the Rockets looking like they’ll make the playoffs, Thompson will be an important piece to their success, and the hope is that he’ll be back sooner than later. Thompson was able to travel with the Rockets on their two-game road trip to Florida, and head coach Ime Udoka hinted that the second-year player <a href="https://www.houstonchronicle.com/sports/rockets/article/amen-thompson-ankle-injury-update-20226803.php" rel="noopener">would probably be back soon</a>.</p><p>“If he does that, could be Miami, could be when we get back,” Udoka said via Danielle Lerner. “Swelling has gone down, pain’s gone down. Flexibility, mobility has gone up, and he’s just got to go through a contact portion. Once he does that we’re going to see how he reacts to that and he’ll be good to go after. So hopefully, sooner than later.”</p><p>Thompson has been a big help to the Rockets this season with his defensive versatility and athleticism. He’s averaging 14.0 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.3 steals, and 1.3 blocks, and it’s obvious that he’s one of the reasons why the Rockets have been a surprise team this season.</p><p>With what Thompson has shown this season, many around the league think that he has the potential to be a star, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/houston-rockets/rockets-rumors-the-young-star-houston-thinks-boasts-russell-westbrook-potential">similar to the skillset of Russell Westbrook</a>.</p><p>“Then there’s Amen Thompson,” the Hoop Collective said. “Obviously, he’s going to be a star. But the big question is—can he be that offensive engine? Somebody in the organization asked me, ‘Tell me what peak Russell Westbrook could do that this kid doesn’t have a chance to do.’”</p><p>If Thompson continues to develop and build off of what he’s done this season, the sky could be the limit for what he can accomplish in his career. Rising star Amen Thompson, who’s been playing some of the best two-way basketball in the league as of late, is set to miss 10 to 14 days after <a href="https://x.com/ShamsCharania/status/1898914440483070134" rel="noopener">suffering a right ankle sprain</a>, according to Shams Charania of ESPN.</p><p>The circumstances surrounding Thompson’s injury are rather unfortunate. The Rockets had already secured the win against the Pelicans on Saturday, but with the 22-year-old forward nearing the first triple-double of his career, he was left in to try and secure the feat. In year two, however, it’s been <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rockets-news-amen-thompson-kobe-admission-clutch-shot-doomed-celtics">impossible for Ime Udoka to keep Thompson on the bench</a>.</p><p>The Overtime Elite product has maintained his defensive prowess while improving drastically on the offensive end of the floor. He is up to nearly 14 points per game on 55.7% shooting from the field, getting most of his buckets inside the arc. He is a monster in transition and as a cutter and has become very good at picking his spots to get himself good looks in the lane.</p><p>The jumper is still a work in progress, as Thompson is shooting just 25% from 3-point range on just over one attempt per game. However, he has shown some improvement in that area and is willing to let them fly when he is open and has the opportunity to. He finished with 33 points on the night. His performance on Monday, and throughout the season, has caught Danny Green’s attention.</p><p>The sophomore forward is averaging career-highs in nearly every statistical category. Not to mention, he’s been a part of winning basketball for the Rockets. Green <a href="https://youtu.be/aXsopvXl5Yc?t=57" rel="noopener">explained</a> on the Kevin O’Connor Show about someone who Thompson’s game resembles the most.</p><p>“I think when I look at Amen Thompson, I’m thinking for some reason, Andre Iguodala comes to mind,” Green said. “I could see that being his ceiling, he could be that type of player. Iggy came in very athletic, with long arms, wings, and defender, and became an All-Star at one point in Philly.</p><p>“It’s crazy to call him a role player, but decided to go from Denver to Golden State to become a role player, but NBA Finals MVP at one point. So I could see Amen Thompson being very similar to that style of a player.”</p><h2><b>Danny Green gives Rockets’ Amen Thompson quite the compliment</b></h2><p>Being compared to an NBA Finals MVP is quite the compliment, and then some. Thompson is only in his second season and is solidifying himself as a key contributor on a young Rockets team. With players like Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun on the roster, Thompson might not get the love he deserves.</p><p>On the season, he’s averaging <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/t/thompam01.html" rel="noopener">13.7 points 8.2 rebounds, and 1.4 steals</a>. His defensive versatility is beyond impressive and takes the pressure off of Sengun and Green to defend the best perimeter player. However, his contributions are noticed whenever he’s on the floor.</p><p>For instance, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rockets-news-amen-thompson-reaches-anthony-davis-victor-wembanyama-territory">Thompson joined Anthony Davis and Victor Wembanyama territory</a> by averaging 10 or more rebounds, two or more blocks, and one or more steals per game. It also shows his defensive impact.</p><p>Either way, being complimented to Iguodala in only your second year is an accomplishment, in and out of itself. He was an insanely athletic player with the Philadelphia 76ers before hopping to the Denver Nuggets and Golden State Warriors. On those teams, he was seen as more of a role player.</p><p>For Thompson, he likely has more of his career in front of him, and only scratching the surface. He dominated the court, snatching rebounds and leading fast breaks with explosive speed.</p><p>Thompson got valuable support from forward Dillon Brooks, who also got off to a strong start. Brooks drained four three-pointers in the first quarter, giving Houston a four-point lead over Boston heading into the second.</p><p>In the second quarter, Thompson and Brooks kept up the pressure, showcasing their elite shooting and putting the Celtics’ defense to the test. The Rockets also stepped up defensively, making life difficult for superstar forward Jayson Tatum on offense.</p><p>Tatum was held scoreless in the first half, but the Rockets only led by two, keeping the game tight. The third quarter turned into an offensive showdown, with Tatum scoring 15 points. Despite his scoring surge, Brooks and Thompson stayed hot, and the Rockets trailed by just four heading into the fourth.</p><h2><b>Outlasting the Celtics in the final quarter</b></h2><p>Boston started the fourth quarter strong, scoring seven unanswered points in the first two minutes. While it was just another January game, it was a special one for Rockets forward Amen Thompson and his twin brother, Pistons forward Ausar Thompson. It’s not always they get to share the floor in the NBA, so it was a special meeting for the two.</p><p>Following the game, Amen and Ausar had a cool moment on the court, as they hugged each other. However, Amen was also anticipating the trash talk that was going to come from Ausar, so he made it clear that <a href="https://www.houstonchronicle.com/sports/rockets/article/amen-ausar-thompson-twins-brothers-20045621.php" rel="noopener">he would be ignoring his phone for a bit</a>.</p><p>“I’m not even gonna open my phone, bro,” Amen said (h/t Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle). “I can’t even do it. I got his messages on silent.”</p><p>Ausar, meanwhile, said “I’m just gonna brag.” He added: “Talk to him about it all day.”</p><h2><b>Amen Thompson, Ausar Thompson shined during Rockets-Pistons</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Amen-Thompson-and-Ausar-Thompson-in-action-during-Rockets-Pistons.jpg"><figcaption>Thomas Shea-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>In any case, both Thompsons had a solid showing in the game. Amen put up 17 points on 7-for-14 shooting from, the field to go along with six rebounds, five assists and three steals in 40 minutes of action for the Rockets, who dropped tp 28-14. Ausar, on the other hand, played in only 23 minutes but was able to come up with 11 points, nine boards and a block while making 5 of his 12 shots from the field.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pistons-news-cade-cunningham-gets-100-real-nba-draft-mate-jalen-green">real star of the show for the Pistons in their win versus the Rockets, however, was Cade Cunningham</a>, who led Detroit with 32 points on 12-for-22 shooting while stuffing the stat sheets as well with nine rebounds, seven assists, a steal and a block in 36 minutes. The win over the Rockets pushed the Pistons’ record above .500, as Detroit is now 22-21 overall and 12-10 in road games, so far in the 2024-25 NBA regular season.</p><p>Detroit’s victory was also a payback for the Pistons’ 101-99 home loss to the Rockets on Nov. 10, though, Ausar did not see action in that contest while Amen racked up eight points, five rebounds, three assists and a steal off the bench.</p><p>The Pistons and the Rockets will not see each other again in this regular season, so it will be a long wait before the Thompsons get a chance to face off against each other again.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Thompson, the fourth overall pick of the 2023 NBA Draft, has done nothing but impress whenever he gets extended run, and Tuesday night was no different as the Rockets took a 135-112 victory over the Washington Wizards.</p><p>Thompson continues to wow the NBA world with his nearly-unmatched level of athleticism, and it’s translating to stuffed stat sheets and the win column. Against the Wizards, the Rockets forward was a blur, scoring 20 points, hauling in 15 rebounds, and handing out five dimes in a game that wasn’t as close as the lopsided score line would indicate.</p><p>And in so doing, Thompson <a href="https://x.com/StatMamba/status/1876818021995491476" rel="noopener">became the youngest forward</a> in NBA history, as per StatMamba on X (formerly known as Twitter), to put up at least 20 points, 15 rebounds, and five assists in a single game without turning the ball over.</p><p>Thompson sometimes has a problem with being too careless with the basketball, so it’s definitely part of his growth as an all-around force for the Rockets to be more careful and patient with the rock.</p><p>It’s a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rockets-news-amen-thompson-breaks-silence-monster-game-vs-lakers-after-suspension">huge luxury for the Rockets</a> to have a weapon like Thompson; he was drafted as a guard, but the uber-athletic 6’7″ forward can play one to four with relative ease. He fills in so many gaps for a Rockets team that has built a winning identity on the defensive end of the floor, and to see his offense come around the way it has, and in just his sophomore season, no less, has to feel so validating for Houston fans who’ve stuck around through their painful rebuild.</p><h2><b>Amen Thompson, Rockets fly high in win vs. Wizards</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Rockets-forward-Amen-Thompson-1-shoots.jpg"><figcaption>© Geoff Burke-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>It may have taken a bit, but the Rockets took over the game in the second half and did not look back. Amen Thompson played a huge part in giving the Rockets the required energy to pull away with the game rather easily, as it’s his defensive versatility, top-notch end-to-end athleticism, and relentlessness in attacking the basket that more than makes up for the spacing loss amid Jabari Smith Jr.’s injury.</p><p>But Thompson wasn’t the only one to show up on Tuesday night. He studied journalism and communication at UConn.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Houston Rockets</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The Houston Rockets came away with a 119-115 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday, and it marked the return for <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-news-amen-thompson-terry-rozier-suspended-rockets-heat-fight">Amen Thompson after his suspension</a> for his involvement in an <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/heat-news-miami-rockets-fans-react-tyler-herro-amen-thompson-sparking-fight">altercation with Tyler Herro</a> of the Miami Heat, and he had a <a href="https://x.com/BradeauxNBA/status/1876093586347004201" rel="noopener">funny admission after the game</a>.</p><p>“Those six days I was just reflecting but I’m just happy I’m back,” Amen Thompson said, via Bradeaux on X, formerly known as Twitter.</p><p>Thompson came back with a bang, turning in a great performance. He scored 23 points on 11-of-19 shooting, and he also grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds. He played 41 minutes as well, playing a big part in the win. He and Jalen Green were the standout performers for the Rockets. Jalen Green scored 33 points on 12-of-24 shooting, while going 5-of-12 from three as well. Fred VanVleet scored 15, while Alperen Sengun also scored in the double digits as well with 14. Steven Adams was big off the bench as well with nine rebounds.</p><h2><b>Rockets get back on track with win over Lakers</b></h2><p>The Rockers moved to 23-12 on the season with the win over the Lakers. They rebounded from a blowout loss to the Boston Celtics. The Rockets beat the Dallas Mavericks before that game against the Celtics but were coming off of two tough losses against the Minnesota Timberwolves and Heat prior to that.</p><p>Houston has a young and talented team that has them firmly in contention in the Western Conference. At 23-12, the Rockets sit in second place in the West, seven games behind the runaway favorite Oklahoma City Thunder. So despite the rough patch that has taken place over the last handful of games for the Rockets, they are still in a great position from a record standpoint in the Western Conference.</p><p>Up next is a road game against the Washington Wizards on Tuesday.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Be sure to follow him on Twitter @BrettSiegelNBA.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Houston Rockets</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The NBA has <a href="https://x.com/NBAPR/status/1874184263681400912" rel="noopener">handed out discipline</a> for the altercation that happened on Dec. 29 between the Miami Heat and Houston Rockets.</p><p>As a result of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/heat-news-miami-rockets-fans-react-tyler-herro-amen-thompson-sparking-fight">throwing Heat guard Tyler Herro to the ground</a>, Rockets’ guard Amen Thompson has been suspended two games without pay. Miami’s Terry Rozier was also suspended one game without pay due to being involved and escalating the issue at hand. These were the only two players to receive suspensions, as a few others received fines.</p><p>Although he was not suspended, Herro was fined $25,000 for his role in the altercation, and Rockets guard Jalen Green was fined $35,000 for escalating the altercation. VanVleet has been fined $35,000 for this issue.</p><p>Prior to an inbounds pass being made by Rozier, both Thompson and Herro got tangled up with one another after being face-to-face. Thompson took exception to something Herro said, and the Rockets guard threw him to the ground, prompting a massive scuffle between the two sides. Rozier immediately tackled Thompson to the ground, resulting in his suspension for what occurred. Green and Herro were fined for being in the middle of the altercation.</p><p>When asked about the altercation with Thompson, Herro told reporters on Tuesday that <a href="https://x.com/ClutchPoints/status/1874173625529438606" rel="noopener">he likes to get under people’s skin</a> and he hoped that he wouldn’t be suspended for what happened.</p><p>“I think they lost control of their feelings when the game started to turn a little bit in our direction,” Herro said, via ClutchPoints’ Zach Weinberger. “[The NBA] did like an investigation call… we’ll see what happens, I hope I don’t get suspended. … I had no hostility towards the Rockets or anything. It kinda just played out that way. And I like getting under people’s skins anyways, that’s what I do.”</p><p>After Sunday’s game, Udoka spoke to reporters about the incident, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rockets-news-ime-udoka-offers-take-amen-thompson-tyler-herro-altercation">simply stating that his player is just stronger than Herro</a>.</p><p>“I didn’t see a lot, but I rewatched it,” Udoka stated. “They were in each other’s faces, bumping chests a little bit. One guy is stronger than the other.”</p><p>This incident between the Heat and Rockets came just two days after a fight broke out on the court between the Phoenix Suns and Dallas Mavericks. Suns center Jusuf Nurkic and Mavs forward got into it with one another. After Nurkic slapped Marshall, the Mavs’ player responded with a right jab to Nurkic’s face, resulting in the big man hitting the ground.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-news-naji-marshall-jusuf-nurkic-suspensions-nba">Marshall was suspended four games</a> by the league, and Nurkic received a three-game suspension.</p><p>The NBA takes these altercations and matters very seriously, and they have made it a point of emphasis to not only fine but also suspend players for their involvement in fights that occur on the court.</p><p>As a result, Thompson will miss the Rockets’ next two games against the Mavericks and Boston Celtics to begin 2025. Rozier will miss the Heat’s next game on Jan. 1 against the New Orleans Pelicans.</p><p>Houston will play Miami one more time this season in South Beach on Mar. 21, a game that many will now be tuning into for a potential Thompson-Herro Part II.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Both the Heat and the Rockets are currently awaiting potential punishment from the NBA.</p><p>In the meantime, however, that hasn’t stopped either team from speaking about the altercation between Tyler Herro and Amen Thompson. During a media availability session this week, Herro <a href="https://x.com/ClutchPoints/status/1874173625529438606" rel="noopener">spoke about how</a> he felt Thompson and the Rockets were reacting to the fact that the Heat had begun to take control of the game.</p><p>“There wasn’t much talking, no talking at all really. They lost control of their feelings when the game started to turn in our direction a little bit. . .you heard some words from their sideline towards the refs, they were definitely frustrated,” Herro said. “I hope I don’t get suspended or anything, I don’t even think I should have been thrown out the game. . .I had no hostility or anything towards the Rockets or anything. It kind of just played out that way. I like getting under people’s skins anyway, that’s what I do.”</p><p>Following the win against the Rockets, the Heat improved to 16-14 and have won six of their last ten games overall. They are in seventh place in the Eastern Conference amid <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/heat-news-pat-riley-breaks-silence-on-jimmy-butler-trade-rumors">the Jimmy Butler trade rumors</a>.</p><p>A big part of the Heat’s recent success though has come from Herro. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/heat-news-tyler-herro-miami-trade-rumors">Herro is also no stranger to trade rumors</a>, but he’s been able to shut that out and produce on the court. Before being ejected against the Rockets, Herro had played 37 minutes and finished with 27 points, six rebounds and nine assists.</p><p>Herro has appeared in 30 games for the Heat, at a little over 35 minutes per game. He’s been averaging a career-high 24.0 points per game, 5.7 rebound and 5.2 assists with splits of 47.6 percent shooting from the field, 41 percent shooting from the three-point line and 84.4 percent shooting from the free-throw line.</p><p>While the Heat await possible suspension for Herro, they will prepare for the New Orleans Pelicans at home on Jan 1.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He joined ClutchPoints in 2023.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Miami Heat</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>On Sunday evening, the headlines that were going to revolve around an impressive road win <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/heat-star-tyler-herros-playful-reaction-to-amen-thompson-altercation">by the Miami Heat</a> vs the Houston Rockets instead were hijacked by a late game scuffle <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/heat-news-jimmy-butler-reacts-tyler-herro-amen-thompson-fight">between Tyler Herro and Amen Thompson,</a> which resulted in multiple ejections for both teams. Herro and Thompson got locked up while Herro tried to free himself for an inbound pass, and Thompson ultimately ended up throwing the former Sixth Man of the Year to the ground, which led to a benches-clearing scrum between the two squads.</p><p>One person who seemed very entertained from his seat on the bench was Heat forward Kevin Love. Making matters more impressive for Miami was that they did so without Jimmy Butler, and on the second night of a back to back, having lost a tough game to the Atlanta Hawks 24 hours prior.</p><p>Tyler Herro has established himself as a fringe All-Star candidate so far this year, having turned himself into the Heat’s most reliable player, especially considering the frequent absences of Butler and the regression of center Bam Adebayo. Herro has been able to stay on the floor this year and has shown much more poise than he did when asked to be the number one in the team’s playoff loss to the Boston Celtics a season ago.</p><p>Still, as impressive as the win against the Rockets was, there is still a lot of work for Pat Riley and company to do if they want to make a contender out of this roster, and the rampant trade rumors surrounding Jimmy Butler certainly aren’t helping that cause.</p><p>In any case, the Heat will next take the floor on New Year’s Day at home against the New Orleans Pelicans.
