The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/minnesota-timberwolves/timberwolves-news-joe-ingles-1-liner-anthony-edwards-blazers">Timberwolves ended up</a> holding on for the win against a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/indiana-pacers/pacers-news-obi-tobbin-leaves-game-vs-timberwolves-leg-soreness">Pacers team that was</a> similarly shorthanded, but after the game, all fans could wonder about was Edwards’ injury status.</p><p>On Monday, the team finally got an update, and it <a href="https://x.com/ShamsCharania/status/1982858204708290879" rel="noopener">wasn’t a positive one.</a></p><p>“Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards will miss two weeks with a right hamstring strain, sources tell ESPN,” reported ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>It’s certainly a disappointing early-season update for a Timberwolves team that is looking to build off the last two years, both of which ended with gentelman’s sweeps in the Western Conference Finals.</p><p>The good news for the Timberwolves is that the Edwards injury news comes at what would figure to be a relatively easy patch of their schedule, with games against the Charlotte Hornets, Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Lakers, and multiple contests against the Utah Jazz all set to take place during Edwards’ absence.</p><p>Edwards is one of multiple star players in the league currently out due to injury, including Lakers stars LeBron James and Luka Doncic, among others. The Timberwolves have a relatively deep team but did lose some of their wing depth this offseason when Nickeil Alexander-Walker departed in free agency.</p><p>In Edwards’ absence, the Timberwolves will likely lean more heavily on younger players like Terrence Shannon Jr., who had some moments for them during last year’s playoff run, to pick up some of the slack.</p><p>In any case, the Nuggets are next set to hit the floor on Monday evening at home against the Denver Nuggets at 9:30 PM ET. Trae Young will be the engine of the team, and he’s shown over his career that he can lead a group, regardless of who’s playing. Despite the narratives that may have been created about Young, players <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/46701366/nba-atlanta-hawks-trae-young-silence-haters-2025-2026-new-teammates" rel="noopener">know what he brings</a> to the table, including his newest teammate, Nickeil Alexander-Walker.</p><p>Alexander-Walker has played with Anthony Edwards, and narratives have spun about him, too. He thinks Young and Edwards are similar when it comes to their demeanor, but he sees it in a positive light, unlike others.</p><p>“Ant has a very strong personality,” Alexander-Walker said via ESPN’s Ohm Youngmisuk. “Trae has a strong personality. It just comes out different. And so when guys are very self-confident and aware of who they are, to the untrained eye that could be arrogance. It could be cockiness.</p><p>“Trae has confidence. Ant, Shai [Gilgeous-Alexander], Luka [Doncic] has confidence. … But [Young] still wears a heavy burden of pressure. And he’s had success through his pressure.”</p><p>Young has thrived in different situations since he started his career, and he probably wouldn’t have succeeded without having that confidence.</p><h2><b>Kristaps Porzingis compares Trae Young, Luka Doncic</b></h2><p>Young is known as one of the best playmakers in the league, and he has the stats to back it up. He knows how to get his teammates good looks, and Kristaps Porzingis could thrive in his role with the Hawks. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-luka-doncic-kristaps-porzingis-game-1-nba-finals">Porzingis has played with another great playmaker</a> before in Luka Doncic, and he’s using that experience as he plays alongside Young.</p><p>“The playmaking, they both have it at the highest of levels,” Porzingis said. “They do some similar stuff, honestly. Their builds are different. But they’re both masterminds at reading the basket, anticipating what’s going to happen, reading the game, anticipating what’s going to happen.</p><p>“That experience [with Doncic in Dallas] is definitely going to help me. One of the Lakers’ major issues during that series was their lack of a true defensive option on Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards, but they believe they may <a href="https://x.com/Dave_Yapkowitz/status/1979402323777720522" rel="noopener">have an answer this season</a> in Marcus Smart.</p><p>Marcus Smart figures to be one of the Lakers’ primary options on defense against Anthony Edwards during their playoff rematch against the Timberwolves, and after team practice on Thursday Smart spoke about getting ready to match up defensively against one of the NBA’s brightest stars.</p><p>“He’s a big guard, it’s gonna take a full team effort. But my job when I’m on him is just try to make everything as tough as possible,” Smart said. “It’s gonna be a great battle. It’s gonna be physical He’s a great player, I’m a great defender. Like I said, my job is to make it as hard as possible for him.”</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/los-angeles-lakers/lakers-news-marcus-smart-intends-sign-la-wizards-buyout">Lakers acquired Smart in the offseason after he reached a contract buyout</a> with the Washington Wizards. He signed a two-year deal with the Lakers and figures to play a major role in the rotation. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/los-angeles-lakers/lakers-news-lebron-james-timberwolves-physicality-game-1">Timberwolves played a physical style of basketball</a> in the playoffs and the Lakers were unable to match that.</p><p>Enter Smart.  The 11-year veteran has built his career off of playing a physical brand of basketball. He is one of only guard to have won the league’s Defensive Player of the Year Award in the last 30 years since Gary Payton did so in 1995-96. It’s that physicality that he’s hoping to instill in the rest of the team this season.</p><p>“Lead by example. It’s kind of hard to put that fight in your guys if you’re not out there doing it,” Smart said. “So for me it’s all about if I’m gonna put up, I got to put up or shut up. I got to do it. If I want somebody else to follow my lead, I have to lead by example.”</p><p>Last season, Smart appeared in a total of 34 games, including seven starts, between the Wizards and Memphis Grizzlies. He averaged 9.0 points, 2.1 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.2 steals with splits of 39.3 percent shooting from the field, 34.8 percent shooting from the three-point line and 76.1 percent shooting from the free-throw line.</p><p>In the Lakers’ season opener against the Warriors, Smart finished with nine points in 23 minutes while shooting 3-of-6 from the field. Significantly, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/players/b76109c3/anthony-edwards">Edwards led the way with 41 points and seven rebounds</a> while shooting 14 for 28 from the floor. Edwards explained the difference between now and earlier in his career and the <a href="https://bsky.app/profile/jonkrawczynski.bsky.social/post/3m3tnftmrbk2v" rel="noopener">preparation for the NBA season</a>.</p><p>“The last five years, I’ve tried to use the first 10 games to get in shape. This year, I was like I’m going to use this summer to get in shape. However, he fought through the pain and played a pivotal role in leading the Wolves to a hard-fought road victory over a divisional rival. Edwards took another step forward last season, putting up career-high averages of 27.6 points per game while shooting 44.7 percent from the field. Along with Julius Randle and Jaden McDaniels, Edwards is at the heart of this team.</p><p>It’s been mostly <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/minnesota-timberwolves/timberwolves-news-anthony-edwards-nsfw-warning-limitless-potential">good times for the Wolves</a> since they drafted Edwards, and they have become a regular playoff contender. His late shot sequence was decisive: a step-back to cut it to 107–105, a three for a 108–107 lead with 3:36 left, another three for 114–112, and a Rudy Gobert dunk with 32.1 seconds remaining to close it out.</p><p>Minnesota trailed 61–57 at halftime and by seven after three because they did not get enough stops. Early foul trouble limited Gobert to under 13 first-half minutes, and Portland attacked the rim and the foul line freely.</p><p>For Portland, Jerami Grant came off the bench to top-score with 29 points as Deni Avdija produced 20 as a starter. They will be looking to build off of last season’s Western Conference Finals appearance, establishing themselves as one of the best teams in the Western Conference behind yet another leap from Anthony Edwards.</p><p>However, Edwards appears to be in danger of missing tomorrow night’s contest. As <a href="https://x.com/DaneMooreNBA/status/1980785913837023616" rel="noopener">pointed out</a> by Timberwolves reporter Dane Moore, the team has the 24-year-old star listed on the injury report as questionable <a href="https://ak-static.cms.nba.com/referee/injury/Injury-Report_2025-10-21_08PM.pdf" rel="noopener">due to</a> back spasms.</p><p>It’s not quite clear when Edwards sustained the injury and whether or not this is actually serious enough to warrant an absence on opening night. He did miss the Timberwolves’ final preseason game, a 126-110 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, but all of the team’s core players rested for that contest anyway.</p><p>This injury designation appears to be nothing more than a precautionary measure for the Timberwolves, especially considering how durable Edwards has been for his entire career. He has not played in fewer than 72 games in a single season for his career, and over the past three seasons, he has played in exactly 79 games each.</p><p>Simply put, Edwards does not miss too many games, and mere back spasms should not be enough to keep him out for tomorrow’s contest against the Blazers. The 24-year-old is a freak of nature, as he seems to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/minnesota-timberwolves/timberwolves-anthony-edwards-goes-down-with-possible-injury-in-game-2">bounce back from ankle injuries</a> and shrug them off like they’re nothing.</p><p>Of course, more information regarding Edwards’ availability will be revealed within the next 24 hours, although if one were to bet, one should lean on him suiting up for the Timberwolves’ season opener. Coming off a career year where he averaged 27.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 4.5 assists, the 23-year-old has already established himself as one of the NBA’s fiercest young stars. His playoff performance only reinforced that, as he led Minnesota to its second consecutive Western Conference Finals appearance while averaging 25.3 points per game.</p><h2><b>Locked In for a New Level</b></h2><p>If that rumored list was not convincing enough, Timberwolves assistant coach Chris Hines confirmed that Edwards’ offseason intensity has reached new heights.</p><p>“Probably one of my most intense summers with him. I think I lost 15 pounds working with him.
