Simmons has been billed as the “next LeBron James” before he was drafted first overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2016 NBA Draft, but here he is, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/nba-rumors-ben-simmons-unsure-continuing-career-amid-knicks-interest">without a job in the NBA</a> even though training camp is about to begin in a few days.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/nba-news-ben-simmons-career-update-retirement-rumors">Simmons is a cautionary tale of unfulfilled potential</a>, although some of it isn’t his fault; he did experience injury woes that sapped him of the athleticism that made him a special player, rendering him a shell of his former self. And who knows, maybe once his mind is in a better place, he could still end up being a productive player off an NBA team’s bench — provided, of course, that he’s open to that idea.</p><h2><b>Ben Simmons is still looking for an NBA home</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/New-York-has-strong-interest-in-Ben-Simmons.jpg"><figcaption>Credit: Robert Edwards</figcaption></figure><p>At the moment, it’s understandable why NBA teams are a bit wary of getting on the Simmons train. He’s very injury-prone, so he just might end up hogging a roster spot without the possibility of it paying off in a big way.</p><p>But <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/sacramento-kings/kings-news-ben-simmons-named-potential-sacramento-free-agent-target">Simmons’ positional versatility</a> as well as whatever upside he has left may prove to be enticing for teams that lack depth, particularly in the frontcourt.</p><p>Maybe the Boston Celtics, a team that has nonexistent frontcourt depth, could use him, provided that they find enough wiggle room under the second apron. The Golden State Warriors could also use him, especially when they’re stuck dealing with the Jonathan Kuminga situation and their roster size is stuck at nine.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Despite this, the 76ers don’t have a lot in the way of real depth on their roster, and recently, it came to light that the team once toyed with the idea of bringing back an interesting and highly controversial player: Ben Simmons.</p><p>Simmons <a href="https://www.sportskeeda.com/basketball/news-nba-free-agency-rumors-ben-simmons-made-philly-return-repairing-fractured-relationship-joel-embiid" rel="noopener">apparently had interest</a> in rejoining the 76ers after his February buyout with the Brooklyn Nets, although he ultimately ended up signing with the Los Angeles Clippers for the rest of the season.</p><p>“There had been some overtures, I would say, between Ben Simmons and the Sixers once he was securing a buyout from Brooklyn,” NBA insider Jake Fischer said, per Bleacher Report (via Sportskeeda). “He still has some friends in the area. I believe his brother was living in Philadelphia for a time, and there was some interest from Philadelphia at that point in time.”</p><p>Fischer also added that “I can’t say I have any updated information on the Sixers’ interest in Ben Simmons there. And I do think Embiid and Ben have repaired that type of fracturing that went down behind the scenes as well.”</p><h2><b>A potentially wild scenario</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Clippers-guard-Ben-Simmons.jpg"><figcaption>Mandatory Credit: Darren Yamashita-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The last time we saw Ben Simmons in a Philadelphia 76ers uniform, he was passing up a dunk opportunity against noted elite shot blocker Trae Young in Game 7 of the 2021 Eastern Conference semifinals. The 76ers went on to lose that game and series, essentially solidifying that Simmons would no longer be a member of the team moving forward, and he was eventually traded to the Brooklyn Nets in a move that brought back James Harden.</p><p>Simmons has spent the better part of the last few years injured, which is not dissimilar to what the 76ers have continued to experience with Joel Embiid, who has been out for the majority of the last two seasons.</p><p>Still, it’s hard to imagine that the reunion between the two sides would be a tenable solution to their respective issues.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The Australian forward entered the league and quickly became a star with the Philadelphia 76ers. However, he has fallen far from grace. After spending the last part of the 2024-25 season with the Los Angeles Clippers, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-news-ben-simmons-agent-drops-him-retirement-rumors">not even Simmons’ agent wants him anymore</a>. Jeff Teague wants him to retire.</p><p>Simmons has fought back issues and mental blocks for the last few years. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/why-sixers-are-clear-cut-winners-of-james-harden-ben-simmons-trade-one-year-later">76ers traded him to the Brooklyn Nets</a> in exchange for James Harden in a deal that ended his partnership with Joel Embiid. Since then, the forward has not been able to recapture the magic that made him an All-Star. Despite interest from multiple teams, Simmons has few options without an agent.</p><p>Teague had a long career in the NBA and played against Simmons in the later years of his career. According to him, it is time for Simmons to <a href="https://youtu.be/bayTRAdyu2Q?t=80" rel="noopener">hang his sneakers up and retire</a>. He said on the Club 520 podcast that the forward is out of opportunity to contribute to a team the way he used to.</p><p>“Yeah it’s over bro y’all seen him when he was playing. He can’t move no more,” Teague said. “He runs like people on 2K. If you’ve got Kawhi’s motion style, you know what I’m talking about. You run like your back hurts. He runs like his back hurts. He’s hurt, I used to always be like okay whatever, but no, he’s legit hurt. What made him effective was pushing the ball and being dynamic in transition and he can’t do that anymore. Or he doesn’t have the opportunity, like nobody believes it.”</p><p>Simmons has yet to make his next move. However, his agent abandoning him is a bad sign for his future as he tries to find a new team. Bernie Lee informed the National Basketball Players Association that he has <a href="https://x.com/TheSteinLine/status/1963657686739751085" rel="noopener">formally removed himself</a> from the union ledger as Simmons’ agent, according to Marc Stein.</p><p>Simmons played for the Nets and Los Angeles Clippers last season during the final year of his max contract. He’s drawn interest from the New York Knicks and one other team this offseason <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/nba-rumors-ben-simmons-unsure-continuing-career-amid-knicks-interest">but is also considering retirement</a>, according to the New York Post’s Stefan Bondy.</p><p>Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul represented Simmons when he signed a five-year, $177 million deal with the Philadelphia 76ers. However, the former No. 1 pick parted ways with Klutch in 2023 following his first season with the Brooklyn Nets. The three-time All-Star sat out the entire 2021-22 season due to a back injury and mental health issues.</p><p>He continued to trend in the wrong direction in terms of offensive aggressiveness following his trade to the Nets. The Aussie averaged 6.5 points, 6.2 rebounds and 6.3 assists while attempting 5.3 shots per game over 90 appearances with Brooklyn. He agreed to a buyout midway through last season and signed with the Clippers.</p><p>However, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/los-angeles-clippers/clippers-news-stephen-a-smith-drops-ben-simmons-stealing-money-take">Simmons continued to struggle</a> with Los Angeles, averaging 2.9 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists in 16.4 minutes per game over 18 appearances. The 29-year-old attempted a career-low 6.5 shots per 36 minutes during his stint with the Clippers. He shot a career-low 43.4 percent from the field despite attempting 86.8 percent of his shots from within 10 feet.</p><p>While Simmons is contemplating his NBA future, it’s <a href="https://x.com/TheDunkCentral/status/1963624234019647802" rel="noopener">not a foregone conclusion</a> that he would have a roster spot this coming season if he decides to continue playing.</p><p>“The reality is, he’s looking at the minimum contract… He might even be forced to take a contract where he’s not guaranteed,” said ESPN’s Brian Windhorst. “He would have to sort of earn his way onto the team through training camp and then maybe not know his status until midway through the season. Drafted first overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in 2016 after a remarkable freshman season at LSU, Simmons won Rookie of the Year in 2018 and earned three consecutive All-Star selections from 2019 to 2021. During his peak years with Philadelphia, he averaged roughly 16.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 7.6 assists per game while shooting 56.6% from the field, and he also earned two All-Defensive Team selections and one All-NBA nod.</p><p>However, Simmons’ career has been hampered by injuries and inconsistent play. He missed the entire 2021-22 season following a holdout and back injury that eventually required surgery. The turning point came in the 2021 playoffs when he infamously passed up an open dunk in Game 7 against the Atlanta Hawks, an incident that damaged his confidence and relationship with the Sixers. He subsequently refused to play for Philadelphia again and requested a trade.</p><p>Traded to the Brooklyn Nets in September 2022 in exchange for James Harden, Simmons was unable to regain form.
