However, several insiders with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/knicks-rumors-new-york-insiders-ben-simmons-contract">ties to the Knicks have since reported that New York did not make an offer</a>. Bondy recently reported that the former Philadelphia 76ers star “is questioning whether he even wants to continue playing in the NBA.” <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nets-news-ben-simmons-reveals-considered-retiring-offseason-amid-injury-struggles">Simmons revealed in January that he considered retirement</a> last summer while rehabbing a back injury.</p><p>The Aussie’s stock has plummeted since his collapse during the 76ers’ second-round loss to the Atlanta Hawks in 2021. After sitting out the entire 2021-22 campaign, he looked like a shell of his old self over the last three seasons.</p><p>Simmons averaged 5.9 points, 5.8 rebounds and 5.8 assists while appearing in just 108 games with the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers. He battled numerous back injuries during that span, requiring multiple procedures.</p><p>While the Knicks had interest in Simmons, it’s not a foregone conclusion that he will have a roster spot next season if he decides to continue playing. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported that Simmons may be forced to sign a non-guaranteed contract and battle for a roster spot at training camp.</p><p>“The reality is, he’s looking at the minimum contract… He might even be forced to take a contract where he’s not guaranteed,” Windhorst said. “He would have to sort of earn his way onto the team through training camp and then maybe not know his status until midway through the season. Earlier this week, Marc Stein of The Stein Line had reported that New York offered a one-year contract to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/knicks-rumors-did-new-york-offer-ben-simmons-contract">none other than three-time All-Star Ben Simmons.</a></p><p>However, according to <a href="https://marcstein.substack.com/p/monday-best-the-latest-nba-trade?utm_campaign=email-post&amp;r=3shtjf&amp;utm_source=substack&amp;utm_medium=email" rel="noopener">the report</a>, the Australian had rejected the deal after previously being reported to be looking for a contract above the minimum. This has since been said to be untrue, with multiple Knicks insiders claiming that the franchise never made <a href="https://x.com/IanBegley/status/1965189562172669960" rel="noopener">a formal offer</a>.</p><p>“Knicks have had dialogue with free agent Ben Simmons over the course of the offseason and certainly have had interest in him, but club has never made a formal offer to Simmons, per league sources,” Ian Begley wrote on X.</p><p>The insider also claimed that Malcolm Brogdon and Landry Shamet were instead the names the Knicks have considered for that final roster spot. Last season, Simmons averaged 5.0, 5.6 rebounds and 4.7 assists across 51 appearances for the Nets and the Clippers.</p><p>He was paid just north of a million as part of the deal he signed with the Clippers after Brooklyn had previously bought out the remainder of his contract that he signed with the Philadelphia 76ers in February 2025. Now, reports even claim that the 2016 NBA draft’s No. 1 pick is reportedly considering his NBA future.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-news-ben-simmons-agent-drops-him-retirement-rumors">Simmons was reported to have been dropped by his agent</a> Bernie Lee earlier this month. Brian Windhorst had noted that the 29-year-old may have to settle for a non-guaranteed contract.</p><p>While Simmons is undoubtedly no longer the same player, the Knicks are still in the market for a bench scorer. They have worked in the offseason to improve their depth already with the additions of Guerschon Yabusele and Jordan Clarkson. He attempted a career-low 6.6 shots per 36 minutes while shooting a career-low 43.4 percent from the field despite attempting 86.8 percent of his shots from within 10 feet.</p><p>Despite this, New York seemed to think the 6-foot-10 ball-handler could prove valuable in a reserve role. The Knicks made several additions to their bench this offseason, signing Guerschon Yabusele and Jordan Clarkson in free agency. Despite this, the 76ers don’t have a lot in the way of real depth on their roster, and recently, it came to light that the team once toyed with the idea of bringing back an interesting and highly controversial player: Ben Simmons.</p><p>Simmons <a href="https://www.sportskeeda.com/basketball/news-nba-free-agency-rumors-ben-simmons-made-philly-return-repairing-fractured-relationship-joel-embiid" rel="noopener">apparently had interest</a> in rejoining the 76ers after his February buyout with the Brooklyn Nets, although he ultimately ended up signing with the Los Angeles Clippers for the rest of the season.</p><p>“There had been some overtures, I would say, between Ben Simmons and the Sixers once he was securing a buyout from Brooklyn,” NBA insider Jake Fischer said, per Bleacher Report (via Sportskeeda). “He still has some friends in the area. I believe his brother was living in Philadelphia for a time, and there was some interest from Philadelphia at that point in time.”</p><p>Fischer also added that “I can’t say I have any updated information on the Sixers’ interest in Ben Simmons there. And I do think Embiid and Ben have repaired that type of fracturing that went down behind the scenes as well.”</p><h2><b>A potentially wild scenario</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Clippers-guard-Ben-Simmons.jpg"><figcaption>Mandatory Credit: Darren Yamashita-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The last time we saw Ben Simmons in a Philadelphia 76ers uniform, he was passing up a dunk opportunity against noted elite shot blocker Trae Young in Game 7 of the 2021 Eastern Conference semifinals. The 76ers went on to lose that game and series, essentially solidifying that Simmons would no longer be a member of the team moving forward, and he was eventually traded to the Brooklyn Nets in a move that brought back James Harden.</p><p>Simmons has spent the better part of the last few years injured, which is not dissimilar to what the 76ers have continued to experience with Joel Embiid, who has been out for the majority of the last two seasons.</p><p>Still, it’s hard to imagine that the reunion between the two sides would be a tenable solution to their respective issues.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The Australian forward entered the league and quickly became a star with the Philadelphia 76ers. However, he has fallen far from grace. After spending the last part of the 2024-25 season with the Los Angeles Clippers, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-news-ben-simmons-agent-drops-him-retirement-rumors">not even Simmons’ agent wants him anymore</a>. Jeff Teague wants him to retire.</p><p>Simmons has fought back issues and mental blocks for the last few years. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/why-sixers-are-clear-cut-winners-of-james-harden-ben-simmons-trade-one-year-later">76ers traded him to the Brooklyn Nets</a> in exchange for James Harden in a deal that ended his partnership with Joel Embiid. Since then, the forward has not been able to recapture the magic that made him an All-Star. Despite interest from multiple teams, Simmons has few options without an agent.</p><p>Teague had a long career in the NBA and played against Simmons in the later years of his career. According to him, it is time for Simmons to <a href="https://youtu.be/bayTRAdyu2Q?t=80" rel="noopener">hang his sneakers up and retire</a>. He said on the Club 520 podcast that the forward is out of opportunity to contribute to a team the way he used to.</p><p>“Yeah it’s over bro y’all seen him when he was playing. He can’t move no more,” Teague said. “He runs like people on 2K. If you’ve got Kawhi’s motion style, you know what I’m talking about. You run like your back hurts. He runs like his back hurts. He’s hurt, I used to always be like okay whatever, but no, he’s legit hurt. What made him effective was pushing the ball and being dynamic in transition and he can’t do that anymore. Or he doesn’t have the opportunity, like nobody believes it.”</p><p>Simmons has yet to make his next move. However, his agent abandoning him is a bad sign for his future as he tries to find a new team. Bernie Lee informed the National Basketball Players Association that he has <a href="https://x.com/TheSteinLine/status/1963657686739751085" rel="noopener">formally removed himself</a> from the union ledger as Simmons’ agent, according to Marc Stein.</p><p>Simmons played for the Nets and Los Angeles Clippers last season during the final year of his max contract. He’s drawn interest from the New York Knicks and one other team this offseason <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/nba-rumors-ben-simmons-unsure-continuing-career-amid-knicks-interest">but is also considering retirement</a>, according to the New York Post’s Stefan Bondy.</p><p>Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul represented Simmons when he signed a five-year, $177 million deal with the Philadelphia 76ers. However, the former No. 1 pick parted ways with Klutch in 2023 following his first season with the Brooklyn Nets. The three-time All-Star sat out the entire 2021-22 season due to a back injury and mental health issues.</p><p>He continued to trend in the wrong direction in terms of offensive aggressiveness following his trade to the Nets. The Aussie averaged 6.5 points, 6.2 rebounds and 6.3 assists while attempting 5.3 shots per game over 90 appearances with Brooklyn. He agreed to a buyout midway through last season and signed with the Clippers.</p><p>However, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/los-angeles-clippers/clippers-news-stephen-a-smith-drops-ben-simmons-stealing-money-take">Simmons continued to struggle</a> with Los Angeles, averaging 2.9 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists in 16.4 minutes per game over 18 appearances. The 29-year-old attempted a career-low 6.5 shots per 36 minutes during his stint with the Clippers. He shot a career-low 43.4 percent from the field despite attempting 86.8 percent of his shots from within 10 feet.</p><p>While Simmons is contemplating his NBA future, it’s <a href="https://x.com/TheDunkCentral/status/1963624234019647802" rel="noopener">not a foregone conclusion</a> that he would have a roster spot this coming season if he decides to continue playing.</p><p>“The reality is, he’s looking at the minimum contract… He might even be forced to take a contract where he’s not guaranteed,” said ESPN’s Brian Windhorst. “He would have to sort of earn his way onto the team through training camp and then maybe not know his status until midway through the season. So it seems to me you are looking at Landry Shamet or a Ben Simmons-type player. That is why I would probably take the field. Are the Knicks the favorite? At this point, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/knicks-rumors-new-york-has-strong-interest-in-ben-simmons" rel="noopener">New York Knicks are expressing interest in snatching him up</a>. </p><p>Among the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/nba-rumors-suns-celtics-added-list-ben-simmons-suitors" rel="noopener">teams expressing interest in Simmons</a> are the Boston Celtics and the Phoenix Suns. At this point, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/siegels-scoop-jonathan-kuminga-standoff-warriors-final-stages" rel="noopener">the Knicks and Celtics have the greater interest in Simmons</a>, per Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints. </p><p>Reportedly, Simmons is expected to narrow his decision sometime soon. Furthermore, Siegel believes that Simmons will likely end up with the Knicks. </p><p>Simmons is 29 years old and still has productive years ahead of him. Although his skills have diminished due to injuries and a back problem, he has played for the Brooklyn Nets and the LA Clippers.</p><p>Last year, Simmons averaged 5.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 5.6 assists while playing in 51 total games. </p><p>Since 2016, Simmons has become a recognizable presence in the NBA after being drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers. In 2018, he was named the NBA Rookie of the Year. Simmons was an NBA All-Star in 2019, 2020, and 2021. </p><h2><b>Ben Simmons and his potential with the Knicks</b></h2><p>At first glance, the thought of Simmons joining the New York Knicks may seem perplexing to some, considering the vulnerabilities he brings. Nevertheless, he also possesses a particular skill set that could be beneficial to Coach Mike Brown.</p><p>After all, Brown emphasizes the importance of defense, which is where Simmons can step up and contribute. Simmons ended last season with the Los Angeles Clippers, teaming up with the guy he was once traded for.</p><p>In a recent New York Knicks <a href="https://sny.tv/articles/knicks-mailbag-mike-brown-7-31-25" rel="noopener">Mailbag by Ian Begley</a>, he mentioned that the Knicks have “strong interest” in Simmons. The other team that does? The Boston Celtics. Begley does not mention that in his article, but <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/nba-rumors-suns-celtics-added-list-ben-simmons-suitors">reports have shown that Boston is interested</a>.</p><p>Who would have imagined?</p><p>In responding to a question, here is what Begley said.</p><p>“Ben Simmons is certainly a candidate for the Knicks’ final roster spot. As of earlier this week, New York continued to show strong interest in signing Simmons as teams in on Simmons await his decision.”</p><p>“He’s garnered interest from several teams around the league. The Knicks also have maintained interest in Landry Shamet for that final roster spot.”</p><p>“New York’s team salary cannot exceed the second apron ($207.8 million). They have enough money to sign a rookie free agent (it seems to me that Kevin McCullar is the best candidate for that spot) and a veteran to a minimum deal.”</p><p>“They would need to make a trade in order to add a third player on a traditional NBA deal. All of New York’s two-way spots are open as well.”</p><p>The Knicks hired Mike Brown to be the new head coach. Expect a different play style for the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/1-final-move-new-york-knicks-complete-2025-nba-offseason">New York Knicks</a>, who are still one of the top teams in the NBA.
