The game was tied. The crowd was going nuts. That situation late in the Milwaukee Bucks’ 110-103 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves seemed tailor-made for Bobby Portis to let his demons win and risk getting ejected. But the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/bucks-news-bobby-portis-joins-extremely-exclusive-club-amid-timberwolves-comeback">Bucks’ veteran, in his first game back</a> after a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/bucks-news-bobby-portis-suspended-25-games-taking-banned-substance">25-game suspension</a>, instead played the role of calm, collected veteran.</p><p>“Bobby runs over to me and says, ‘Coach, we gotta calm Scoot down,'” Doc Rivers said postgame, referring to Kevin Porter Jr., who was in the aforementioned skirmish with Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert. “When I heard that, I knew we were in a good place.”</p><p>Portis returned rested and ready after his suspension. Rivers said before the game he expected Portis’ high-octane energy to overflow. He’ll probably foul out in three minutes, Rivers joked.</p><p>Instead, Portis played the role of focused, methodical playmaker. He dropped in 18 points on 7-15 shooting, including 2-6 from deep. He snared 10 rebounds. He brought intensity and size on defense that the Bucks missed without him.</p><p>“Over the last 47 days, I just tried to stay ready,” Portis told the <a href="https://x.com/MadDanWrites/status/1909765151697551462" rel="noopener">raucous Fiserv Forum crowd</a> after the game.</p><p>With 10 minutes to go, the Bucks trailed by 24 points. Giannis Antetokounmpo checked back into the game, which seemed out of reach. From then on, Antetokounmpo led a “bench mob” led by Portis and guard Kevin Porter Jr. to the improbable win.</p><p>In the closing stretch, they outscored the Timberwolves 34-3.</p><p>They first pulled even with the Timberwolves on an A.J. Green 3-pointer with 3:35 left. On the next possession, Gobert and Porter Jr. got tangled up near midcourt. Gobert went down and shoved Porter Jr. after getting up. With the crowd riled up, it could have escalated quickly and ended badly.</p><p>But Portis, not known for being level-headed in those types of situations, held Gobert back as Antetokounmpo corralled a clearly irate Porter Jr. Portis then made his way to Rivers. Things didn’t escalate further.</p><p>From there, Porter Jr. played hero, with four big steals down the stretch that led to easy buckets in transition. The Bucks won the quarter 40-13. Portis and bench mates Green, Porter Jr., and Gary Trent Jr. finished the quarter +27. His favorite jersey number is 34, owing to his Minnesota childhood idol, Kirby Puckett, and of course the Greek Freak.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Milwaukee Bucks</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Milwaukee Bucks coach Doc Rivers had very high praise for new big man Jericho Sims, acquired at the trade deadline from the New York Knicks.</p><p>“Jericho is a super athlete, you know, reminds me of a DeAndre Jordan type of athlete,” Rivers said pre-All Star Break. “And so, you know, I’ve had a lot of luck with guys like that.”</p><p>You might remember that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/clippers-news-mavs-deandre-jordan-reacts-to-doc-rivers-saying-he-should-have-his-jersey-retired-in-l-a">Rivers thought so highly of Jordan</a>, a staple of the Clippers’ ‘Lob City’ days, that he lobbied for Jordan’s jersey retirement. That high opinion of his new center hasn’t translated into playing time. Sims, in three games with the Bucks, played zero minutes.</p><p>But by necessity, Sims’ bench warming days are likely over with the Thursday morning news that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/bucks-news-bobby-portis-suspended-25-games-taking-banned-substance">Bobby Portis will have to sit the next 25 games</a> due to suspension for using a banned medication. The last time Portis sat for an extended period, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/bucks-news-damian-lillard-brutally-honest-big-hole-hurting-milwaukee">Bucks got manhandled in the paint</a>.</p><p>Portis, the team’s sixth man, averages 25 minutes and eight rebounds a game. Although often faulted for defensive lapses and other perceived gaps in his game, Portis reliably brought a junkyard dog mentality that led to big nights on the boards and that endear him to Bucks’ fans. Filling the gap in the interior won’t be easy.</p><p>Center Brook Lopez has largely migrated to the perimeter, pulling down just 4.7 boards a game despite his hulking size. Antetokounmpo remains a walking hoover, sucking down 12.2 boards a game. But he’s coming off a calf injury and his bench minutes were often ably filled by Portis.</p><p>New addition Kyle Kuzma, at 6-foot-10, is an active and aggressive rebounder. But the team is going to need more help filling Portis’ stat lines.</p><p>Enter Sims.</p><p>The 6-foot-10 center is, as Rivers suggested, an athletic freak. He weighs in at a chiseled 250 pounds and has the leaping ability of an actual buck, the deer kind. He registered a vertical leap of 44.5 inches at the NBA Draft Combine, <a href="https://www.nba.com/draft/2021/prospects/jericho-sims" rel="noopener">the third-highest in league history</a>.</p><p>But all those hops and hype haven’t translated into much more than occasional highlight plays for Sims, <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@houseofhighlights/video/7438795991341534510">including this thunderdunk</a> over new teammate Kuzma. His career averages over four seasons with the Knicks: 13 minutes, 2.4 points and 3.9 rebounds a game.</p><p>He’ll likely have an opportunity to prove himself in bigger minutes for a team that, despite an up-and-down season and ongoing injuries, still has title aspirations.</p><p>Bucks fans: welcome to Sims City. The Bucks are currently in fifth place in the Eastern Conference and gearing up for a postseason push, but they will be without Portis until the very end of the regular season as there are just 29 games remaining on the schedule.</p><p>“Just In: The NBA has suspended Milwaukee Bucks’ Bobby Portis for 25 games for violating the league’s anti-drug policy, sources tell ESPN,” Shams Charania said in a post.</p><p>According to Bobby Portis’ agent Mark Bartelstein, the violation was an “honest mistake” from Portis. He was apparently trying to take Toradol, an approved painkiller, and he took Tramadol accidentally.</p><p>“I am devastated for Bobby right now because he made an honest mistake and the ramifications of it are incredibly significant,” Mark Bartelstein said. “Bobby unintentionally took a pain medication called Tramadol, thinking he was taking a pain medication called Toradol. Toradol is an approved pain medication that he has used previously and that teams and players use for pain and inflammation at times. Tramadol, however, is not an approved pain medication and was just recently added to the banned substance list this past spring. The Tramadol pill he took came from an assistant of his, with a valid prescription for the painkiller, which he mistakenly told Bobby was Toradol. This was, again, an honest mistake that was made because of the similarity in the names of the drugs and the fact they both serve a very similar purpose. Bobby was using this anti-inflammatory pain-reducing medication to deal with an elbow injury he had this past fall and believed he was taking Toradol to alleviate some pain in preparation for that night’s game.”</p><p>Portis and his agent are in cooperation with the league, but Bartelstein is disappointed that Portis faces such a harsh penalty for an honest mistake.</p><p>“Bobby is a great person, teammate and professional, and has a wonderful reputation in our league, his communities, and his team,” Bartelstein continued. “There are no bigger fans of the NBA than Bobby and I, and we are grateful to have closely and chiaboratively worked with the NBA on countless occasions. We support the league’s anti-drug policy and its purpose in having a fair, competitive, healthy landscape for our athletes as it relates to drugs of abuse, performance enhancing issues, etc. Bobby Portis is absolutely not a drug abuser. Bobby works tirelessly on increasing his performance in all natural, legal, healthy ways, but he made a mistake and took a pill that unknowingly he should not have. Today, in this instance, I am so deeply disappointed that the NBA chooses to interpret its policy so strictly, and that the policy does not allow for a different result for an honest mistake with pure intentions.”</p><p>Unfortunately for Portis, there is no option but to face the 25-game suspension. He will miss all but four remaining games on the Bucks schedule.</p><p>“Bobby loves being a part of the NBA and he loves being a role model and a true ambassador for the Bucks and the city of Milwaukee,” Bartelstein added. “This has been incredibly difficult for him, but he will accept this penalty with grace and turn this into a great opportunity to improve and further build his reputation and performance in every way, both on and off the court.”</p><p>The Bucks <a href="https://x.com/eric_nehm/status/1892606689196531807" rel="noopener">also released a statement</a> regarding the suspension, and Portis was able to tell the story from his point of view.</p><p>“I was dealing with an elbow injury and using an NBA-approved medication for pain and inflammation,” Portis said in the statement. “During that time, I made an honest mistake and took a pain-reducing anti-inflammatory pill that is not approved. I feel horrible and recognize that I’m responsible for what I put in my body. From the bottom of my heart, I want to apologize to the Bucks organization, my teammates, coaches, family, and fans. I give everything I have on the court and will terribly miss playing games for the Bucks during this time. I will continue to work hard and be ready for our long playoff run. It’s truly, truly inspirational, its really amazing.”</p><p>Going into this past summer, head coach Doc Rivers told his superstar that he wants to play him more out of the elbow in post-up and face-up situations. The team struggled out of the gate, losing eight of their first 10 games and sending everyone but the team into a frenzy.</p><p>Since then, however, the Bucks have won 13 of their last 16 games, including the NBA Cup final against the Oklahoma City Thunder. In 2019-20, three-pointers made up 23.7 percent of Antetokounmpo’s shot volume. <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/a/antetgi01.html" rel="noopener">According to Stathead</a>, that number has decreased significantly year over year since.</p><p>• 23.7 percent in 2019-20<br>• 20.1 percent in 2020-21<br>• 19.4 percent in 2021-21<br>• 13.4 percent in 2022-23<br>• 9.1 percent in 2023-24<br>• 3.5 percent in 2024-25</p><p>Simply put, the Bucks’ star is no longer taking three-pointers and is playing from the elbow as well as in the paint much more.</p><p>Giannis Antetokounmpo admitted that playing out of the elbow is something he’s needed some time to transition into, especially as the team incorporates Damian Lillard more and welcomes back Khris Middleton from injury. But Giannis has seen his success grow throughout the early portions of this season.</p><p>“I’ll be honest, in the beginning, I’ve never initiated my offense from the elbow or from the high post,” Antetokounmpo said after the NBA Cup win. “Usually, it’s in transition or in the screen and roll, so it was kind of a weird transition. I had the conversation with Doc and he told me it can be very, very effective when you’re at the elbow, you’re under the wall. It’s very hard for people to show crowds. It’s something new for me. I’ve played in the elbow for 25 games. I think I will stay there for the rest of my career because I’m getting better. I’m getting better at it.”</p><p>Both Brook Lopez and Bobby Portis add that Antetokounmpo’s growth has come both on and off the basketball court.</p><p>“He’s just getting better every year,” Bobby Portis also told ClutchPoints after the NBA Cup. “It seems like [he does] every year I play with him. This is my fifth year playing with him now and every year I’ve played with him, I’ve seen him go to another level. Not just on the court, but as a leader. Like I said, my first four years I’ve played, he was more of a lead by example type of guy. Now he’s more of a vocal leader, telling guys what to do, where to be, pouring confidence into his teammates. I love this version of him.”</p><p>The Bucks didn’t celebrate their NBA Cup win with champagne, beer, and goggles like the Los Angeles Lakers did last season. Instead, the team took a very Giannis-like approach, enjoying the moment but remaining focused on the remainder of the regular season.</p><p>Damian Lillard is playing a big part in the Bucks run. Coming off a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bucks-news-bobby-portis-many-prized-possessions-stolen-home-burglary">recent burglary incident, Bobby Portis</a> still helped beat the Jazz with 19 points in 27 minutes off the bench. Moreover, a hard foul in the fourth quarter cut his nose, causing him to receive stitches in the locker room. Still, asked about his availability for the Bucks-Knicks game, Bobby Portis said the stitches wouldn’t stop him from playing.</p><p>“The best ability is availability… So, I’ll be <a href="https://x.com/eric_nehm/status/1854741286038761863" rel="noopener">hooping tomorrow</a> at 7:30,” he said, via Bucks beat reporter Eric Nehm on X, formerly Twitter.</p><h2><b>Bucks finally get a win</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Bobby-Portis-with-blood-on-his-face.jpg"><figcaption>© Benny Sieu-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Credit to the Bucks’ win goes to Lillard and Giannis, of course, but it also goes to the <a href="https://www.espn.ph/nba/story/_/id/42256971/bucks-shake-starting-unit-bench-gary-trent-jr-andre-jackson" rel="noopener">coaching staff’s decision</a> to start Andre Jackson Jr. in place of Gary Trent Jr.</p><p>The high-flying Jackson finished with seven points, four steals, and three rebounds in 28 minutes, and most of all, he gave the Bucks’ starting lineup a shot in the arm and allowed them to run and play with pace.</p><p>“He brings energy,” Antetokounmpo said of the young starter, via Jamal Collier of ESPN. “He plays his ass off, guards the best player. We play faster. He was incredible today. We definitely need that…. We need to play with that energy.”</p><p>While both Lillard and Giannis have already scored over 30 points together in three of their first games, the most by any duo in the NBA this year, their combined points have not translated into wins. Before the Jazz game, they had lost to both quality teams and basement-dwellers alike.</p><p>They were also tied with the Jazz for the worst record in the league, at 1-6.</p><p>“We needed it bad, desperately,” Dame Time added. “It was important for us to not only get off that six-game losing streak, but to feel something good.”</p><h2><b>What winning does</b></h2><p>Likewise, this win could not have come at a better time. The Greek Freak is trying his best to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bucks-news-giannis-antetokounmpo-positive-despite-frustrating-season-woes">stay positive</a> in light of the Milwaukee’s early struggles.</p><p>Damion Lillard scored 41 points on Saturday night against the Cleveland Cavaliers and it still wasn’t enough as the Bucks dropped the game in the final seconds, 114-113. The Cavs improved to 7-0 with the buzzer-beating win.</p><p>“Losing, it’s frustrating,” Antetokounmpo said. “But we are doing the right things. Like (Wednesday) night we arrived in Memphis and we came together as a team, watched film. Not as eight, nine guys that play. We watched film, we talk about, like what can we do better? What we’re not doing as good, let’s keep one another accountable. We’re doing the right thing.</p><p>“Coming (Thursday) in shootaround and talking about it, talking about our offense, talking about our defense. Everybody is doing the right thing. I see it in everybody’s eyes. Injuries and fatigue along with a sudden coaching shift disallowed them from being able to compete against the Boston Celtics for the title. However, a key member of the Milwaukee Bucks was able to step up for Doc Rivers and he goes by the name of Bobby Portis. His consistent style of play has kept his team afloat but the NBA 2k25 does not seem to see his impact.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bucks-news-bobby-portis-was-shocked-hear-damian-lillard-was-lonely-in-milwaukee">Bobby Portis has fallen</a> to an 80 overall rating in NBA 2k25. The Bucks center used to be rated as an 82 overall throughout the whole of NBA 2k24. So, he was understandably baffled as to why Ronnie 2k and the rest of the game development crew gave him this rating. The big man <a href="https://x.com/BPortistime/status/1829253041083789799" rel="noopener">outlined his dismay</a> in his latest post on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>“Peeped the 2k ratings @NBA2K @Ronnie2K lol no way I got worse,” he declared.</p><h2><b>How did Bobby Portis do during the Bucks’ 2023-24 campaign?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Bobby-Portis.jpg"><figcaption>Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Well, it is safe to say that he was the most consistent producer despite a shift in philosophy between Adrian Griffin and Doc Rivers. When Giannis Antetokounmpo or Damian Lillard were not available, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pacers-news-fan-hilariously-mocks-damian-lillard-bobby-portis-during-game-6">the Bucks leaned on him</a> to close games. In fact, he played a whopping and complete 82 games for Milwaukee.</p><p>Admittedly, there was a drop-off in the numbers that he produced for the Bucks. From a 14.1-points-per-game type of guy, he slipped down to 13.8 points per contest. However, his efficiency in knocking down shots got better. Portis managed to knock down 50.8% of his shots from all three levels of scoring. This was a big improvement from his previous field goal percentage which clocked in at 49.6%.</p><p>When it came to battling for boards, Giannis Antetokounmpo had some insurance because of him. Portis grabbed 7.4 of them throughout the games he played. Admittedly, this is a lower number than his previous season’s output. Back in the 2022-23 season, he was able to notch 9.6 rebounds. This was the closest that he got to averaging a double-double.</p><p>The 80 overall he got from NBA 2k25 is not the definitive rating he will get for the whole season. He can always improve his production such that Ronnie 2k and the rest of the game development team change his overall. Who knows? After a lot of fans expected him to go to South Beach, he instead ended up pairing up with Giannis Antetokounmpo. While the prospect of being with one of the best players in the world is great, it necessitated him to move to the Midwest. It apparently made him a bit lonely but guys like Bobby Portis were oblivious to this. He didn’t find out after their NBA Playoffs run came crashing down.</p><h2><b>Bobby Portis can’t believe it</b></h2><p>Getting used to a new environment is never easy. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bucks-news-damian-lillard-lonely-admission-trade-blazers">Damian Lillard has spent</a> all his career with the Portland Trail Blazers and has probably formed a bond with the community there. When reports kept coming in about his loneliness, a lot of fans and media personnel overreacted quite a bit. It eventually got solved, whether it was by winning more with Giannis Antetokounmpo or any other factors.</p><p>That news cycle eventually passed and ran its course through Bucks media. However, some members of Doc Rivers’ squad don’t seem to know that this happened. Bobby Portis was one of <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGcEl7nuwrk&amp;t=914s" rel="noopener">these guys</a>, via the Run It Back Show.</p><p>“He said he was lonely in Milwaukee? I guess I don’t know man, I’m not going to say he was lonely. He said he was lonely. No, he didn’t bro,” the Bucks big man said while being left puzzled.</p><p>Lou Williams and Chandler Parsons had to step in such that they could clarify that this did happen. Parsons even joked about how Dame was supposedly upset because he wasn’t invited to the kids’ birthday parties for his Bucks teammates’ kids.</p><p>Eventually, Bobby Portis accepted the fact and understood why their star guard felt that way in Milwaukee. He even dropped a reference to Shams Charania.</p><p>“Oh my gosh. It probably was too cold out there at first. You know how it is in the Midwest man, you know. Shams has been living in the Midwest his whole life. He’s a Midwest guy man, he’s a Chicago guy man. You know how it is, that Lake Michigan man. At first, it was just about missing family then it devolved into not being able to find any entertainment after Bucks games and practices.</p><p>“It’s definitely lonely because I’m such a family guy. My life is my family. After games, I would come out, and my whole family would be back there. My kids are coming out of the playroom. My mom, my brother, my cousins lived there. You know what I mean? My best friends live in Portland,” the Bucks’ star guard said.</p><p>So, what did he do to keep himself company? Well, watching boxing was one of those cures.</p><p>“Bro, go to practice, go home, watch boxing, play video games. Man, I type in FightHype on YouTube 100 times and am praying for something new to be on there. Seriously, I don’t have much of a life. But that’s what comes with making a big-boy decision.
