That’s all I can say.”</p><p>Bobby Portis was genuinely confused as to why fans would think Antetokounmpo would want to leave Milwaukee, considering his he believes his Bucks team can compete for a championship next season.</p><p>“I mean, what’s wrong with our team? Why can’t we do it this year? The only thing wrong with us is people being hurt,” Portis said. “We win the championship. 2022 came in and we go down. We lose Game 7 to Boston. 2023, first round, Giannis tries to dunk on K. Love, comes down, hurts his back. I did not want to go through a season, a practice, a day without Bobby Portis as part of the team that I’m a part of. I think Bobby is so much the ethos of who we are. He is the underdog. He fights. He grinds,” Horst said. “There’s no one that cares more, in my opinion, about the Milwaukee Bucks than Bobby. He loves the Milwaukee Bucks. He feels like it’s a family, it’s a city and a fan base that’s embraced him. It’s an organization that’s embraced him.</p><p>“And he continues to give back to our organization and take less on the margins and do different things here and there. He had previously signed a four-year, $48 million contract back in 2022 after playing a crucial role in the title-winning season. Portis has been a reliable scorer for Milwaukee off the bench and has been a consistent threat in recent years.</p><p>Known for his energy and hustle that he brings on the court, Portis has become a fan favorite while doing so. Though there have been some reports saying that a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-rumors-brian-windhorst-truth-bomb-dead-giannis-antetokounmpo-trade-market">trade market for the Bucks star is nonexistent</a> since he hasn’t asked out for a trade, Portis would echo some of the same sentiments.</p><p>Portis would appear on the show “Run it Back” and was asked about the speculation around Antetokounmpo, but expressed how the star <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7I_M6xzOWs8&amp;t=320s" rel="noopener">“bleeds green.”</a> Antetokounmpo has been teammates with Portis for the last five seasons, where they won a championship together in 2021, as the 30-year-old questioned if people truly wanted to see the superstar be with the Toronto Raptors.</p><p>“When you’ve been on a team for a decade plus and when you’ve done so much for a city,” Portis said. “Low key, like basketball in Milwaukee wasn’t a thing until like Giannis became who he was. So when you put that much effort into a franchise, that much trust and belief, and being loyal for so long. Like I said, I always go back to the point of me saying he bleeds green. No matter what’s reported, no matter what might come into the threshold. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst would speak a few times on<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1qWRNeptt4&amp;t=690s" rel="noopener"> how there won’t be a deal</a>, like he said on “Get Up” last Thursday.</p><p>“There’s not going to be a Giannis Antetokounmpo trade in the short-term future,” Windhorst said. “The league has come to terms with the real realization that the Bucks are going to keep him in. But there are several moves the Bucks could make, including saying goodbye<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/milwaukee-bucks/bucks-news-giannis-antetokounmpo-teammate-claims-bleeds-green-trade-rumors"> to Bobby Portis.</a></p><p>Portis has some say in what happens this summer, as he has a player option he could exercise. If he chooses to do so or not, though, Milwaukee <a href="https://www.jsonline.com/story/sports/nba/bucks/2025/05/14/how-the-milwaukee-bucks-retool-around-giannis-antetokounmpo-golden-state-warriors-model/83376204007/" rel="noopener">very well may use</a> his salary to try and improve the roster, much like the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-dallas-completes-klay-thompson-acquisition-in-historic-6-team-trade">Golden State Warriors did with Klay Thompson</a> a year ago.</p><p>“And now, five years later, Portis may play the role of the Warriors’ Thompson in making the Bucks better without him,” Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Jim Owczarski wrote. “Portis has a player option for $13.4 million, but league sources have indicated to the Journal Sentinel that he plans to test free agency.</p><p>“At just 30 years old, Portis has value around the league – so there is an opportunity to agree to a sign-and-trade with him to acquire different players to reboot the Bucks. Golden State signed and traded Thompson to Dallas, which created outgoing money that allowed them to bring in sign-and-trade deals for Hield and Anderson.”</p><p>Portis, who can be a polarizing player among Bucks fans because his on-court effectiveness can wax and wane, has been on the roster for five seasons. In that time, his role grew from a 20-minute-per-game reserve to a starter averaging nearly 30 minutes who has a major impact on the team’s success. In 2021, Portis played a key role coming off the bench in the Bucks’ first NBA championship in 47 years.</p><p>Four years removed from that triumph, the Bucks seem incredibly far away from winning another title. In addition to an underperforming, expensive roster, Damian Lillard, a large part of the team and its salary cap, tore his Achilles tendon in the first round of the playoffs. The injury is expected to keep him out the entire next season, the first of a two-year, $100+ million contract extension. Lillard will be 36 years old when he is expected to return to action.</p><p>As a result of Lillard’s injury and Milwaukee’s general postseason shortcomings, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/milwaukee-bucks/bucks-news-brian-windhorst-breaks-down-giannis-trade-interest-around-nba">Antetokounmpo may be</a> on his way out of town. They will be a firm playoff team every year as long as Giannis Antetokounmpo is there, but they are a clear step or two down from being a true contender. Now the Bucks are out of assets to improve, and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/bucks-news-giannis-antetokounmpo-damian-lillard-admission-game-5-loss">Lillard will miss most of next season with a torn Achilles</a>.</p><p>As a result, all of the buzz coming into this offseason has been about <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/bucks-rumors-bill-simmons-drops-eye-opening-giannis-amid-trade-speculation">whether Antetokounmpo will end up requesting a trade</a>. The game was tied. The crowd was going nuts. That situation late in the Milwaukee Bucks’ 110-103 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves seemed tailor-made for Bobby Portis to let his demons win and risk getting ejected. But the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/bucks-news-bobby-portis-joins-extremely-exclusive-club-amid-timberwolves-comeback">Bucks’ veteran, in his first game back</a> after a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/bucks-news-bobby-portis-suspended-25-games-taking-banned-substance">25-game suspension</a>, instead played the role of calm, collected veteran.</p><p>“Bobby runs over to me and says, ‘Coach, we gotta calm Scoot down,'” Doc Rivers said postgame, referring to Kevin Porter Jr., who was in the aforementioned skirmish with Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert. “When I heard that, I knew we were in a good place.”</p><p>Portis returned rested and ready after his suspension. Rivers said before the game he expected Portis’ high-octane energy to overflow. He’ll probably foul out in three minutes, Rivers joked.</p><p>Instead, Portis played the role of focused, methodical playmaker. He dropped in 18 points on 7-15 shooting, including 2-6 from deep. He snared 10 rebounds. He brought intensity and size on defense that the Bucks missed without him.</p><p>“Over the last 47 days, I just tried to stay ready,” Portis told the <a href="https://x.com/MadDanWrites/status/1909765151697551462" rel="noopener">raucous Fiserv Forum crowd</a> after the game.</p><p>With 10 minutes to go, the Bucks trailed by 24 points. Giannis Antetokounmpo checked back into the game, which seemed out of reach. From then on, Antetokounmpo led a “bench mob” led by Portis and guard Kevin Porter Jr. to the improbable win.</p><p>In the closing stretch, they outscored the Timberwolves 34-3.</p><p>They first pulled even with the Timberwolves on an A.J. Green 3-pointer with 3:35 left. On the next possession, Gobert and Porter Jr. got tangled up near midcourt. Gobert went down and shoved Porter Jr. after getting up. With the crowd riled up, it could have escalated quickly and ended badly.</p><p>But Portis, not known for being level-headed in those types of situations, held Gobert back as Antetokounmpo corralled a clearly irate Porter Jr. Portis then made his way to Rivers. Things didn’t escalate further.</p><p>From there, Porter Jr. played hero, with four big steals down the stretch that led to easy buckets in transition. The Bucks won the quarter 40-13. Portis and bench mates Green, Porter Jr., and Gary Trent Jr. finished the quarter +27. Antetokounmpo was +29.</p><p>Also notable is the fact that in 28:40 of game time, Portis committed just two fouls.</p><p>Up next: The Bucks try to build on their five-game winning streak with a home game against the New Orleans Pelicans on Thursday night.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

His favorite jersey number is 34, owing to his Minnesota childhood idol, Kirby Puckett, and of course the Greek Freak.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Milwaukee Bucks</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Milwaukee Bucks coach Doc Rivers had very high praise for new big man Jericho Sims, acquired at the trade deadline from the New York Knicks.</p><p>“Jericho is a super athlete, you know, reminds me of a DeAndre Jordan type of athlete,” Rivers said pre-All Star Break. “And so, you know, I’ve had a lot of luck with guys like that.”</p><p>You might remember that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/clippers-news-mavs-deandre-jordan-reacts-to-doc-rivers-saying-he-should-have-his-jersey-retired-in-l-a">Rivers thought so highly of Jordan</a>, a staple of the Clippers’ ‘Lob City’ days, that he lobbied for Jordan’s jersey retirement. That high opinion of his new center hasn’t translated into playing time. Sims, in three games with the Bucks, played zero minutes.</p><p>But by necessity, Sims’ bench warming days are likely over with the Thursday morning news that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/bucks-news-bobby-portis-suspended-25-games-taking-banned-substance">Bobby Portis will have to sit the next 25 games</a> due to suspension for using a banned medication. The last time Portis sat for an extended period, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/bucks-news-damian-lillard-brutally-honest-big-hole-hurting-milwaukee">Bucks got manhandled in the paint</a>.</p><p>Portis, the team’s sixth man, averages 25 minutes and eight rebounds a game. Although often faulted for defensive lapses and other perceived gaps in his game, Portis reliably brought a junkyard dog mentality that led to big nights on the boards and that endear him to Bucks’ fans. Filling the gap in the interior won’t be easy.</p><p>Center Brook Lopez has largely migrated to the perimeter, pulling down just 4.7 boards a game despite his hulking size. Antetokounmpo remains a walking hoover, sucking down 12.2 boards a game. But he’s coming off a calf injury and his bench minutes were often ably filled by Portis.</p><p>New addition Kyle Kuzma, at 6-foot-10, is an active and aggressive rebounder. But the team is going to need more help filling Portis’ stat lines.</p><p>Enter Sims.</p><p>The 6-foot-10 center is, as Rivers suggested, an athletic freak. He weighs in at a chiseled 250 pounds and has the leaping ability of an actual buck, the deer kind. He registered a vertical leap of 44.5 inches at the NBA Draft Combine, <a href="https://www.nba.com/draft/2021/prospects/jericho-sims" rel="noopener">the third-highest in league history</a>.</p><p>But all those hops and hype haven’t translated into much more than occasional highlight plays for Sims, <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@houseofhighlights/video/7438795991341534510">including this thunderdunk</a> over new teammate Kuzma. His career averages over four seasons with the Knicks: 13 minutes, 2.4 points and 3.9 rebounds a game.</p><p>He’ll likely have an opportunity to prove himself in bigger minutes for a team that, despite an up-and-down season and ongoing injuries, still has title aspirations.</p><p>Bucks fans: welcome to Sims City.
