Mere moments after he was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-2023-nba-draft-grade-brandin-podziemski" rel="noopener">selected with the No. 19 overall pick</a> in the 2023 NBA Draft, the Golden State Warriors rookie boasted about his potential to be a “triple-double guy” in the NBA—despite having not accomplished that gaudy statistical feat in either of his two collegiate seasons.</p><p>Just because that steadfast self-assurance is already a hallmark of his game hardly means Podziemski thinks he has nothing to learn as his debut campaign dawns, though. Sitting in on Stephen Curry and Chris Paul’s workout in Las Vegas during Summer League action, for instance, was a <a href="https://www.mercurynews.com/2023/07/28/podziemskis-intense-competitive-fire-led-him-to-nba-and-led-warriors-to-him/" rel="noopener">lesson in training and preparation</a> the 20-year-old definitely didn’t take for granted.</p><p>“It’s a million-dollar experience,” Podziemski said of being courtside for his future Hall-of-Fame teammates’ workout session, per Madeline Kenney of <i>The Mercury News</i>. “Anybody would pay any amount of money to watch them two workout.”</p><p>Like Stephen Curry and Chris Paul, Brandin Podziemski is blessed with preternatural feel and court sense as a playmaker that was on full display throughout the Warriors’ Summer League run. The former Santa Clara star was arguably the best passer playing in Sin City, constantly setting up teammates for open looks whether in pick-and-roll, catching on the move or pushing in transition.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-3-biggest-things-dubs-learned-from-2023-nba-summer-league" rel="noopener">Podziemski’s other superlative skill</a> with the Santa Clara Broncos last season, however, was largely absent during Summer League action. He shot just 8-of-32 from deep across seven games, ugly accuracy that’s only slightly more troubling than a relative lack of volume. They played seven games in total, which meant getting an extensive look at their promising draft picks and two-way players. Rookie guard <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-brandin-podziemskis-promise-to-dubs-fans-amid-summer-league-shooting-woes" rel="noopener">Brandin Podziemski was probably</a> the Dubs’ player under the biggest microscope. He’s the Warriors’ highest draft pick since they selected Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody back in 2020. Podziemski was a relative unknown before transferring from Illinois to Santa Clara, but was a late riser during draft season and rose all the way to a top 20 selection. He largely played well but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for improvement. Let’s recap how he played in his first NBA Summer League go-round.</p><p><i><b>*Watch NBA games LIVE with fuboTV <a href="https://www.fubo.tv/lp/nba/?irad=356361&amp;irmp=492408" rel="noopener sponsored">(click for a free trial)*</a></b></i></p><h2><b>Size and athleticism could be an issue on both ends</b></h2><p>Brandin Podziemski was an analytics darling coming out of Santa Clara. Shooting 48% from the field and 43.8% from 3 on just under six three-point attempts per game while dishing out just under four assists per game so it’s not hard to see why. ESPN’s Kevin Pelton’s projection systems heralded Podziemski as the number two prospect in this class. While I’m sure even he isn’t *that* bullish on Podziemski, Podziemski had a lot of fans in the draft community with plenty of ammo to back that faith in him.</p><p>I wasn’t a big fan of Podziemski during the draft process because of his size and athleticism. His 6-5 205 pound frame is nice, but he only has a 6-5.5 wingspan and 8-0.5 standing reach. He isn’t the burstiest nor most vertical athlete in the world, and that shows up when trying to create for himself. He doesn’t project to be a versatile or even capable defender either.</p><p>Podziemski had a tough time scoring the ball all Summer League for the Warriors. In seven Summer League games, Podziemski averaged roughly 10.3 points per game on 26-80 (32.5%) shooting. He had a tough time breaking defenders off the dribble. Sometimes he would back his man down and slowly matriculate his way to the rim that way. Against smaller defenders, that could work. But even they can hold their own against a pretty unathletic and not long player like Podziemski. He may not have scored the ball all that efficiently during Summer League, but he can really pass and create for others. In seven Summer League games, he had 37 assists to 27 turnovers. That’s a lot of turnovers, but many were ones you live with where he saw and made the right play, but his teammate wasn’t ready. Because of his shooting acumen, teams mostly went over Podziemski’s screens in pick-and-roll. That processing ability matched with his playmaking is what makes him a very good fit with the Warriors. Again, Podziemski is best in transition and within a free-flowing, movement offense. The Warriors led the NBA in pace in the regular season according to NBA.com. His playmaking was the area that Podziemski’s game that shined the brightest during Summer League.</p><h2><b>Positive takeaways</b></h2><p>Summer League is largely a time for exploration. Players try to adjust to the speed of the NBA game and see how their strengths can translate to the NBA. Brandin Podziemski struggled as a scorer, but he shined as a playmaker and rebounder (6.3 per game). That was enough to see his place in the NBA and possibly <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-steve-kerrs-excited-reaction-to-brandin-podziemski-pick" rel="noopener">the Warriors’ rotation</a>. Their stars and structure will only accentuate his strengths even further. The latter got his timing right as he cut to the rim, and he did not disappoint with his two-handed finish.</p><p>These two youngsters aren’t expected to take the league by storm this coming season, and in truth, they might even struggle to crack head coach Steve Kerr’s rotation. However, it is also clear that they both have a bright future ahead of them. With a lot of hard work and a bit of luck, we could be looking at the future of the Warriors right here.</p><p>Apart from Podziemski (10 points, six assists) and Jackson-Davis (14 points, seven rebounds), Kendric Davis also had a good game for Golden State in this one, finishing with a team-high 18 points and five dimes. Instead, the reigning West Coast Conference Player of the Year shared a <a href="https://twitter.com/brandinpodziem2/status/1679322590211608577" rel="noopener">defiant message with Dub Nation</a> on Twitter, promising he’ll soon get back to the impressive shot-making and high-level efficiency that made him a breakout star at Santa Clara last season.</p><p>“My shots will start to go in!!! I trust my work and preparation!!!” Podziemski wrote.</p><p>His struggles creating space off the bounce and finishing in the paint over the last week-and-a-half haven’t exactly been surprising. It’s not another loss in Sin City, no matter how nail-biting, that has Dub Nation feeling extra anxious heading into Thursday’s event finale, though. The struggles of Brandin Podziemski are the source of that unease, and rightfully so.</p><p>The Warriors’ first-round pick finished with five points, seven rebounds, five assists and four turnovers against Dallas, shooting an ugly 1-of-10 from the field while at times being exploited defensively. As Golden State’s time at Summer League winds down, let’s dive into Brandin Podziemski’s good, bad and ugly—not in that order—from another revealing performance in Las Vegas.</p><h2><b>Brandin Podziemski Summer League reactions vs. Mavs</b></h2><h2><b>The Ugly</b></h2><p>There’s no sugarcoating <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-2023-nba-draft-grade-brandin-podziemski" rel="noopener">Podziemski’s almost complete inability</a> to score or create clean looks for himself on Wednesday.</p><p>His first basket against the Mavs came on a sideline out-of-bounds-play late in the fourth quarter, when Podziemski caught just above the elbow, faked a dribble hand-off and got the ball on the backboard just before Dereck Lively rotated from the weak side for a block.</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>That’s exactly the type of built-in advantage Podziemski has needed to get all the way to the rim or even just a full shoulder past his defender throughout Summer League. But full-scale defensive breakdowns like the above are atypical even in July.</p><p>Despite the Warriors’ best efforts to give him a head of steam or space to launch with dribble hand-offs, varied ball screens and one-pass-away positioning, Podziemski failed to produce his own offense pretty much over and over.</p><p>These are all <i>tough</i> shots. Missing them isn’t the problem for Podziemski; it’s that they’re the most viable attempts he could muster.</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>Podziemski didn’t fare any better seeking tries from beyond the arc.</p><p>A 43.8% three-point shooter at Santa Clara last season, he’s hardly played like that type of marksman with the summer Dubs, and not just because his shots haven’t fallen. Podziemski is now 3-of-14 on triples in Las Vegas after missing all three of his long-range tries versus Dallas.</p><p>The bigger issue is his palpable reluctance to let fly at all, never more evident than when Golden State could’ve beaten the Mavs with a three in overtime. Instead of catching on the move, taking one more dribble and stepping into a potential game-winner, Podziemski barely looked at the rim before deciding to give up the ball.</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>The final sequence of Wednesday’s game was just as damning.</p><p>Podziemski’s short standing reach and barely-there explosiveness in a crowd dogged him throughout the pre-draft process, and has reared its ugly head facing Summer League competition, too. He just had no realistic chance to get this would-be game-winning layup to the rim.</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p> </p><h2><b>The Good</b></h2><p>Podziemski had one game-winning shot easily blocked and didn’t even conceive of another. But before his labors finishing around the basket and discomfort quick-pulling from three were cemented even further as the game hung in the balance, he helped complete Golden State’s 13-point fourth quarter comeback with a drive-and-kick dime that tied the score at 90 with just eight seconds left.</p><p>This possession is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-steve-kerrs-excited-reaction-to-brandin-podziemski-pick" rel="noopener">Podziemski’s greatest strength</a> in a nutshell.</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>He wastes no time up-faking on the catch, drawing a switch from Lively. Anticipating the rookie big man’s penchant for leaving his feet, Podziemski stops in his tracks and subtly feigns another shot attempt, drawing the weak-side defender one step farther from Kendric Davis before making the pass.</p><p>Buckets.</p><p>Podziemski’s elite-level processing speed and understanding of timing and angles as a playmaker were once again on full display Wednesday afternoon. He’s arguably the best pure passer in Las Vegas, a distinction for which he’d no doubt warrant consideration even if Scoot Henderson and Amen Thompson weren’t sidelined by minor injury in their Summer League opener.</p><p>Podziemski deserved to finish with at least double his five assists, frequently putting his teammates in advantage situations and making the defense scramble with nuanced, high-level passing reads all over the floor.</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>It’s looking more and more like <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-mike-dunleavy-jr-surprising-admission-about-1st-round-pick" rel="noopener">Podziemski will see a fair share of time</a> with the G League Warriors as a rookie. Whether cutting his teeth in Santa Cruz or moonlighting as a rotation player when Golden State is short-handed, his passing chops are bound to pop.</p><h2><b>The Bad</b></h2><p>Podziemski wasn’t an abject negative defensively against Dallas. He was reliable as a help defender, fought on the defensive glass and even managed a couple stops when the Mavs targeted him one-on-one.</p><p>But the jump in execution, skill and overall talent offensively from Summer League to the NBA is massive, and Podziemski’s limitations as an on-ball defender in isolation and pick-and-roll were again laid bare on Wednesday.</p><p>What’s worse than being absolutely roasted off the bounce one-on-one? Getting caught on a pick the following possession, then compounding the problem by fouling the roller for a towering and-1 once back in the play.</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>Podziemski actually slides his feet on this crunch-time possession better than the end result suggests. But with length like a small point guard and absent the typical quick-twitch athleticism to match, Podziemski almost functions as a traffic cone for Mavs two-way player Mike Miles Jr.</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>Still, defense was the least of Podziemski’s worries against Dallas. He’ll never be a plus defender for Golden State, and did nothing more to exacerbate existing concerns on that side of the ball that date back to the pre-draft process.</p><p>Here’s hoping Brandin Podziemski is good enough as a scorer and shot-maker in the Dubs’ Summer League finale on Thursday to shift the negative focus squarely back to defense.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Podziemski has barely had time to get to know his teammates, let alone play with them, and clearly dealt with some nerves after a rough opening few minutes to his first time wearing blue and gold. Basketball in July, obviously, is <i>much </i>different than basketball from October to June.</p><p>Bottom line: There’s simply no reliable predictive power to be gleaned from Summer League. Podziemski’s unofficial debut with the Warriors, though, at least provided a glimpse at the on-court traits that will help inform his role with Golden State as a rookie.</p><p>All those necessary qualifiers in mind, let’s dive into three Brandin Podziemski reactions from the Warriors’ <a href="https://www.nba.com/game/gsw-vs-sac-1322300003/box-score#box-score" rel="noopener">100-94 loss</a> to the Kings at the California Classic.</p><h2>3 Brandin Podziemski reactions from Warriors’ Summer League opener</h2><h2><b>The physical concerns are real</b></h2><p>Podziemski measured over 6’5 in shoes and posted a 39-inch maximum vertical leap at the pre-draft combine, somewhat easing worries about potential physical deficiencies he could face at the next level. Go ahead and forget those measurements for now.</p><p>Podziemski simply looked small and slow on the Summer League floor. Unlike other aspects of his game on display in Sacramento, his size and athletic issues won’t be mitigated much by playing with better teammates, either.</p><p>The former Santa Clara star is never going to play alpha dog for the Warriors like he did in college. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-2023-nba-draft-grade-brandin-podziemski" rel="noopener">first-round case for Podziemski</a> was always that he’d thrive playing off advantages created by stars, knocking down open jumpers and creating offense for himself and his teammates by attacking tilted defenses.</p><p>Golden State put Podziemski in those positions again and again versus the Kings, running him around dribble hand-offs, popping him into open space after ball screens and stationing him one pass away from side pick-and-rolls. All too often, the momentum and separation those actions naturally provide evaporated quickly when Podziemski had the ball in his hands.</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p> </p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>Podziemski never tried to get all the way to the rim as a driver, settling for difficult high-arching, same-foot floaters. He drained those shots at a high level last season at Santa Clara, and a couple just rimmed out. The problem is that they were the best attempts he could muster, Podziemski unable to zip past or go at shot-blockers after turning the corner nor get enough space from trailing defenders to step back for jumpers.</p><p>His lack of burst and twitch was evident when pressured at the point of attack as a primary ball handler, too.</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>The Warriors were a mess offensively at times in this game. Advantages produced by Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and even Draymond Green will be bigger than any he can exploit this summer.</p><p>Still, major questions about how Podziemski’s tools would translate to the NBA only loom larger in wake of his pro debut.</p><h2><b>Podziemski’s high-level feel is, too—on both ends</b></h2><p>Podziemski ended up with six assists, and would’ve finished with 10 or more if his teammates had made a couple more layups and open shots. He has natural court vision, constantly mapping the floor for cracks in the defense he sees coming a blip or two before they materialize.</p><p>Podziemski was the best passer on the floor Monday, and it wasn’t particularly close.</p><p> </p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>Podziemski already screens and cuts like a Warrior, too, never standing in one place in the halfcourt. His constant activity and lightning-quick processing in that off-ball role should shine in Golden State.</p><p>No one thinks Podziemski will be a plus NBA defender. The same lagging length and explosiveness that hinders him offensively figures to wear worse on the other end.</p><p>But it’s clear that Podziemski won’t be a minus on defense because he’s not fully committed or unable to grasp advanced team concepts. He was an active, reliable help defender versus Sacramento, on several occasions covering for teammates who missed switches or were beaten backdoor. Podziemski seems bound to soon rank among the league leaders in charges drawn per minute.</p><p>This awesome possession—featuring an off-ball switch, on-the-fly low man adjustment and anticipated Eurostep on the drive—is a tidy encapsulation of how Podziemski read Monday’s game defensively, thinking one step ahead like he does as a passer.</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>Podziemski was over-eager as a help defender sometimes, plugging leaks a beat too early only to spring more elsewhere. His contests trailing the play as a primary defender or digging down from the elbow were meek at best. Tasked with guarding Keegan Murray for a few possessions, he was expectedly out-classed.</p><p>Still, Podziemski’s defensive performance on Monday could prove a harbinger of how he could eventually get by in the NBA—when not in the individual crosshairs of opposing stars and gameplans, at least.</p><h2><b>There’s more skill development to come</b></h2><p>Needless to say, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-steve-kerrs-excited-reaction-to-brandin-podziemski-pick" rel="noopener">Podziemski won’t have the ball</a> nearly as much come the regular season as he will in July. He’ll have to find other ways to contribute offensively for Steve Kerr, and movement or volume three-point shooting probably won’t be among them.</p><p>Podziemski routinely passed up quick looks at catch-and-shoot triples against Sacramento, opting to drive close-outs instead—pretty much always going left. He’ll get better launching under that duress going forward, and drained a side-step triple late as the Dubs tried to climb back in the game’s last 90 seconds.</p><p>This play was drawn up for Podziemski to get a corner three out of a timeout. His fake cut into an exit screen yields enough space to let fly, but Podziemski just isn’t comfortable enough—a record scratch into unforced turnover that could get him benched under Kerr.</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>A quicker release and more viable right hand will come for Podziemski. He also needs to add more craft to his floater game, catching rim-protectors flat-footed with eye manipulation and other subtle feints.</p><p>Maybe that skill development, especially the accelerated shot release, comes by the regular season. It’ll be tough for Podziemski to crack the Dubs’ regular rotation otherwise.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
