I always felt like this was a great fit for me,” Thomas said. “Obviously, I would’ve loved to play more [early on], but it was just part of the league, part of the business. He remains confident in his body of work entering the summer.</p><p>“I know my value. I know what I’m worth around the league,” Thomas said. “It’s not really anything for me to be intimidated or excited about because I know the value that I bring to a team. We’ll see how it goes, but I definitely know my value and all my work. I think that’s all that matters to me.”</p><p>The Nets will hold significant leverage in negotiations with Thomas. Brooklyn is the NBA’s <a href="https://www.spotrac.com/news/_/id/2643/post-trade-deadline-2025-nba-cap-space-and-spending-power-projections" rel="noopener">only team projected</a> to have significant cap space. Opposing teams seeking to sign Thomas to an offer sheet will be limited to the non-taxpayer mid-level exception ($14.1 million).</p><p>Multiple league sources told ClutchPoints they expect <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/brooklyn-nets/nets-rumors-nba-salary-cap-expert-cam-thomas-contract-predictions">Thomas’ next contract</a> to fall between $18 million and $24 million annually.</p><p>“This summer, we have a few of those decisions to make. Cam and Day’Ron [Sharpe], two guys that we drafted ourselves, as well as other free agents,” said general manager Sean Marks. “Both of those guys have shown tremendous development over the years. You saw Cam take on a little bit of a different role this year in several games. He became more of a playmaker out there, which is great. League executives expect the salary cap to rise 10 percent for several years due to a $76 billion media rights deal. Given their rebuild timeline and league-leading cap space, the Nets could benefit by frontloading a long-term Thomas deal, as they <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/brooklyn-nets/why-nic-claxtons-97m-contract-details-big-win-nets">recently did with Nic Claxton</a>.</p><p>A Thomas contract following Claxton’s structure, adjusted for the rising salary cap, would be as follows:</p><ul><li>2025-26: $30.3 million (19.6 percent of cap)</li><li>2026-27: $27.9 million (16.39 percent of cap)</li><li>2027-28: $25.5 million (13.61 percent of cap)</li><li>2028-29: $23.0 million (11.19 percent of cap)</li><li><b>Total: Four years, $106.7 million</b></li></ul><p>The structure would pay Thomas between 11 and 14 percent of the salary cap in the contract’s final two years, on par with the league’s high-end role players.</p><p>“If he’s still progressing just a little bit, as long as there’s no decline, if he’s making under $30 million per year as the cap goes up, that’s going to be a very good deal,” Gozlan said of the benefits of a long-term contract.</p><p>However, a four-year deal at over $25 million AAV is on the higher end of Thomas’ projections, as Gozlan noted. Spotrac’s Keith Smith offered a far more modest prediction — three years, $45 million — in his 2025 restricted free agency preview.</p><p>“Thomas can score. He’s a better playmaker than most realize. The Nets aren’t in a position to let young talent walk out the door, but Brooklyn can’t start overpaying guys yet either,” Smith said. “Unless there’s a team that falls in love and wants to work a sign-and-trade deal for Thomas, expect Brooklyn to get him back on a solid value contract. Think what Coby White signed for, plus a bit to represent the new cap environment. From there, it’s up to Thomas to outplay the deal, much like White has.”</p><p>Thomas’ representation could push for a short-term agreement, allowing him to re-enter free agency in the near future. Such a deal would allow the Nets to maintain long-term flexibility while adding a tradable mid-sized salary to their books if they want to pivot and trade for a star. However, it’s unlikely Thomas would agree to a $15 million annual salary in such a scenario, given his feelings about his production since cracking Brooklyn’s rotation.</p><p>“When I got major minutes, I feel like I’ve been one of the best guards in the league at my position,” Thomas said after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/brooklyn-nets/nets-news-cam-thomas-expected-miss-remainder-season-due-to-hamstring-injury">his season-ending hamstring injury</a>. “When I do have the minutes in a featured role, the sky’s the limit for me. We’ve seen that these past two years.”</p><p>Several league sources told ClutchPoints they expect Thomas’ market to fall between $18 million and $24 million annually. As a result, it gave Charlotte the 105-102 win over Brooklyn. However, majority of the issues aren’t his fault, or any particular player.</p><p>Charlotte has been hit with the injury bug all season. Point guard LaMelo Ball was out for an extended time. Still, there’s pride out on the floor for the team. The fourth-year guard played 21 minutes during a 121-102 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers, posting 16 points on 7-of-17 shooting with one assist and three turnovers.</p><p>After <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/brooklyn-nets/nets-news-cam-thomas-trending-toward-return-extended-absence">missing six weeks with a hamstring injury</a> earlier in the season, Thomas returned for two games before re-injuring the same leg during a Jan. 2 win over the Milwaukee Bucks. I’ve never been out this long ever. So it was definitely an adjustment,” Thomas said. “I’m just doing everything more diligently and taking more time. Being patient with it, not rushing. That’s probably the main thing. Just being more diligent with it so it doesn’t happen again.</p><p>I’m not going to overthink, overdo anything. Just do what I’ve been doing. But it was just more so just being more patient with it during the rehab. The rehab was the most important thing. But now it’s all good. I’m fine.”</p><p>Growing pains were evident, and expected, during Thomas’ return. The 24-year-old hunted his shot but posted only one assist. Brooklyn’s offense was stagnant, posting 20 on assists on 7-of-29 (24.1 percent) shooting from three after tallying 31 on 23-of-61 (37.7 percent) during Wednesday’s loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.</p><p>The Nets struggled to slow the Trail Blazers’ offense down, allowing them to shoot 45-of-78 (57.7 percent) from the field and 15-of-36 (41.7 percent) from three.</p><p>“He got up 17 shots in 21 minutes. He got open, that’s what he does. He still needs to keep playing to get his conditioning and get to more minutes. We’re gonna keep working,” said head coach Jordi Fernandez. “But again, I want him to score, playmake, and defend. We’ll hold each other accountable to be better. It was great to have him on the court, great to see that he was able to get those shots up. And I’m pretty sure that he wants to be better and wants to help the team.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/golden-state-warriors/warriors-news-draymond-green-in-awe-kobe-like-player-torched-dubs">Thomas’ shot creation</a> had been the missing ingredient for a Nets team that ranked third in defense but 28th in offense during a 7-4 stretch entering Friday. The 24-year-old had averaged 24.7 points on 45/38/88 shooting splits over 19 appearances before his latest injury.</p><p>Harnessing that elite scoring ability will be among Fernandez’s top tasks as Brooklyn pushes for the Eastern Conference’s final play-in spot over the season’s final 23 games. If he and his team hope to achieve that goal, they’ll <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCKFGLz_jVM" rel="noopener">have to be far better</a> than what they put on tape Friday night.</p><p>“Portland was the better team tonight… They played hard all 48 minutes, and we did not play hard consistently, and that [result] is what happens [when you do that] in the NBA,” Fernandez said. “And if we don’t understand that, we have 23 games here to play as hard as we can for 48 minutes as a group with no excuses. There’s gonna be nights that the other team is better than you, then you can be ok with it.</p><p>Tonight, I am the first one [to say], I have to be better, I have to help them be better. It is not the first time that we don’t show up from the beginning, then we wake up a little bit, and it’s not good enough. This is not who we want to be. We’re winning our identity. He’s a weapon, and he’s capable of scoring in bunches,” said head coach Jordi Fernandez. “And even if they double team him, then – with the proper spacing – you can get a good shot. So the game’s he’s played, he’s made the difference; and that’s what we expect from him. We also need him to be a playmaker, to be a defender, to have a complete game. And he’s been working hard, and we’re going to push him.”</p><p>While the Nets will need Thomas to carry a heavy load if they hope to stay afloat offensively, they won’t rush him back following his second hamstring strain this season.</p><p>“We’re excited to push him to whatever his body is ready for. He’s done a great job playing five-on-five, so all that load is being tested. That’s why we know he’s ready,” Fernandez said. “To get to the real minutes, per se, it’s not gonna happen right away, because we have to be careful and cautious. That’s why I have a great performance and medical staff. And those guys give me the guidelines and we execute it. And we’re ready for him to perform with the minutes he can play right now.”</p><p>The Nets’ recent success has pulled them within 1.5 games of the Chicago Bulls for the Eastern Conference’s play-in spot. While adding Thomas’ scoring punch alongside a surging defense could be the jolt Brooklyn needs to surpass Chicago, the 24-year-old said he’s approaching the stretch run one game at a time.</p><p>“I’m not really looking at [the play-in race] like that. I’m just trying to get out there and get my rhythm back as quickly as possible,” Thomas said. “Just to be able to be back on the court is great. Just to be able to play with my guys. I’m not really looking at the play-in because it is what it is. We either make it or we don’t. We got like 24 more games, so it’s kinda hard to think about stuff like that because you never know what can happen. The veteran has missed the team’s last three games after injuring his ankle during Thursday’s loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers.</p><p>Head coach Jordi Fernandez said Russell will return to practice and potentially game action next week. The 28-year-old has been integral to the Nets’ ability to compete since joining the team in a Dec. 29 trade from the Los Angeles Lakers. Brooklyn is 8-9 in games he has played and 1-6 in games he has missed.</p><p>Noah Clowney will also return to practice next week. The second-year forward has been sidelined since Jan. 27 by an ankle sprain and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/brooklyn-nets/nets-news-noah-clowney-suffers-ankle-injury-setback-practice">suffered a setback during a five-on-five scrimmage</a> before the All-Star break. The 24-year-old, who has been out for the last month, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nets-news-cam-thomas-undergoing-scan-hamstring-amid-extended-absence">underwent an MRI on his hamstring on Wednesday</a> that revealed proper healing.</p><p>“He’s been on the court [doing] non-contract [workouts]. [His] scans were clean,” said head coach Jordi Fernandez. “We’re happy that everything is progressing the right way, and right now, it’s a matter of time and [about] being patient and working hard, and he’s doing it.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nets-news-cam-thomas-set-return-from-extended-injury-absence-magic">Thomas missed a month early this season due to a strain</a> in the same hamstring. He returned for two games before suffering another injury during a Jan. 2 win over the Milwaukee Bucks.</p><h2>Cam Thomas to remain sidelined through All-Star break for Nets</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Cam-Thomas-Cavs-Nets.jpg"><figcaption>Brad Penner-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Thomas had the best start of his NBA career this season while replacing Mikal Bridges as Brooklyn’s No. 1 offensive option. He averaged 24.7 points and 3.4 assists per game on 45/38/88 shooting splits over 19 appearances.</p><p>The Nets’ offense has plummeted to the bottom of the league amid injuries to Thomas and several other key players. Over a 3-15 stretch, Fernandez’s squad ranks 29th on that end, averaging 99.9 points and 15.9 turnovers per game on 42/32/78 shooting splits.</p><p>Brooklyn has cautiously approached injuries lately while shifting focus towards boosting its draft lottery odds. Following the extended losing stretch, the team sits one game behind the Charlotte Hornets for fourth place and three games behind the New Orleans Pelicans for third place <a href="https://www.tankathon.com/" rel="noopener">in the draft lottery standings</a>.</p><p>Thomas should step into a feature offensive role upon his return.
