Following a 0-7 start with Thomas in the lineup, the Nets are 6-10 over their last 16 games with the guard sidelined. Their offensive efficiency has been unphased, while their defense has improved a whopping 12.6 points per 100 possessions.</p><p>Without Thomas dominating the ball, the Nets have built their offense around Michael Porter Jr.’s off-ball movement. The 6-foot-10 forward has played at an All-Star level following Thomas’ injury, averaging 28.2 points on 51/42/83 shooting splits. Meanwhile, young players such as Noah Clowney, Egor Demin, Drake Powell and Danny Wolf have shown promise with added on-ball reps.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/brooklyn-nets/nets-news-cam-thomas-beginning-return-play-progression-following-mri">The Nets announced on Saturday that Thomas has begun on-court work</a> and will have his status updated in two weeks. But with Thomas’ future uncertain and the team showing increased chemistry in his absence, what will his role be upon his return?</p><p>“That’s a good question,” Jordi Fernandez said. “The context is different [now]. Before Cam got hurt, obviously, his superpower was the ability he had to score. At the same time, we always want to see playmaking efficiency and improvement on defense. So all those things were important at the time. Now, he’s been out, the team continues to get better and play in a [good] way… The skillset, he’s very unique and very good at what he does. But at the same time, now the group is taking positive steps.</p><p>“For the most part, I’m very happy with the whole group. And now when he comes back, it’s going to be on me to figure out how we introduce him into the group, and thinking that the most important thing, it’s always the group. And then from there, it’s [that] you’re willing to do whatever it takes to help the group and obviously improve yourself. That’s how this works: Team success will bring your own success as well.”</p><p>The Nets’ offense centered around Thomas before his injury. Fernandez’s comments indicate Thomas is unlikely to return to his accustomed role once healthy. Whether the 24-year-old will have any role with Brooklyn moving forward this season is in question.</p><p>After failing to agree to a contract extension and signing his qualifying offer, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/brooklyn-nets/why-cam-thomas-signing-6-million-qualifying-offer-marks-beginning-of-end-of-nets-tenure">Thomas is unlikely to be a long-term piece for Brooklyn</a>. The former first-round pick will be an unrestricted free agent this summer and has a no-trade clause this season. Given this, the Nets have little incentive to feature him over other players, especially given the team’s recent improvement.</p><p>That reality could lead the two sides to work together on a trade, as <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/brooklyn-nets/nba-rumors-how-nets-could-be-major-player-2026-trade-deadline">ESPN’s Shams Charania noted in his latest intel article</a>.</p><p>“Brooklyn could also work with Cam Thomas’ agents at Octagon to navigate his future, potentially via trade, as he plays the remainder of the season on the qualifying offer and will be an unrestricted free agent next summer,” Charania wrote.</p><p>Brooklyn’s new timeline for Thomas indicates he should be ready to return sometime around Christmas. He attempted to stay in the game but could not continue. The Nets promptly ruled him out.</p><p>“Since I’ve had [this injury], I already know [what it feels like]. I definitely felt like strictly tightness, so I honestly thought I was going to be able to go back in,” he said. “But they were being cautious with it. I’m thankful for that. I don’t wanna make it worse than it already was… I played like two plays after that, and I was like, yeah, I just don’t feel right. I gotta come out. The 24-year-old posted his 10th career 40-point game during Sunday’s 118-107 loss to the San Antonio Spurs, tying him with Kevin Durant for the third-most in the Nets’ NBA history. Only Vince Carter (17) and Kyrie Irving (14) have more.</p><p>Thomas has flashed his elite scoring ability at every step of his basketball journey. After setting Oak Hill Academy’s all-time scoring record, he led the nation’s freshmen in scoring during his lone college season. I’m getting my ass beat out there, but it’s all good. Just gotta keep playing and keep pushing. If I’m good enough to play, I’ll be out there playing. This being the case, the Nets are fully in a rebuilding era as they look to work toward their first run of success in the post-Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving era.</p><p>The Nets also traded wing Cam Johnson to the Denver Nuggets for former NBA champion Michael Porter Jr., whom they hope will be able to provide a veteran presence to one of the youngest locker rooms in the NBA.</p><p>Meanwhile, Thomas will have plenty of opportunities to get his shot attempts up this season on a Nets team that figures to be among the worst in the association.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The fifth-year guard said he lost “a good amount” of weight this offseason. However, he denied that his transformation was in response to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/brooklyn-nets/nets-news-cam-thomas-expected-miss-remainder-season-due-to-hamstring-injury">the hamstring injuries that limited him to 25 games</a> last season.</p><p>“Just something I want to do. Just me being me… not really related to the hammies, Thomas said. “My last two years, I wanted to put on a little more weight, try the strong, bulky route. It was cool, but I never liked how I looked, honestly. The results were still good, but at the end of the day, it’s about how you look and how you feel, so I feel like I look better and I feel better. We’ll see how it goes this year.”</p><p>Thomas also insisted that his reshaped body won’t change how he plays.</p><p>“If I have the weight on or not, I’ll still be doing the same thing. It doesn’t really change how you play,” Thomas said. “At the end of the day, it’s [about] how you look and how you feel. I feel good. [If you] feel good [and you] look good, you play good. The weight doesn’t really matter. The 23-year-old made it just 17 games before injuring his hamstring. He suffered two more strains in the same leg before Brooklyn shut him down for the season.</p><p>When asked about his injuries late last season, Thomas called them “bad luck” and said he wouldn’t adjust his training regimen. However, his dramatic body transformation entering a contract season indicates otherwise.</p><p>“I’m not a doctor. We, right now, know that CT is full go. He’s done a great job,” said head coach Jordi Fernandez. “So nothing that he had last year is going to jeopardize this season. I want him to have the best season of his career, and that comes with being in great shape, and right now, he is in really good shape. We believe that he can sustain numbers if he’s in elite shape.”</p><p>“He tried so hard in these different areas [last season], and his body couldn’t sustain it. Now, we believe he’ll be able to give the same effort, and his body will be able to sustain it. Twenty-five games is not enough. Hopefully he’ll get into the 70s or 80s.”</p><p>Nets General Manager Sean Marks admitted Thomas’ injury-plagued season hurt the guard in contract negotiations. Thomas was reportedly seeking a long-term contract approaching $30 million annually. However, Brooklyn’s best offer was a two-year, $30 million deal with a team option in the second year.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/brooklyn-nets/nets-news-cam-thomas-breaks-silence-on-brooklyn-future">Thomas declined and accepted his one-year, $6 million qualifying offer</a>, giving him a no-trade clause ahead of unrestricted free agency next summer. The former first-round pick will have an opportunity to prove his worth to NBA front offices this season. However, he’ll have to do much more than stay on the court.</p><p>While he’s proven he can score in droves, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/brooklyn-nets/nets-rumors-cam-thomas-30-million-ask-no-interest">Thomas’ shortcomings as a defender and playmaker have raised concerns</a> about whether he’s worth a significant, long-term contract. The LSU product posted a 0.66 assist-to-usage ratio last season, ranking in the ninth percentile among combo guards, per CleaningTheGlass. His 120.6 defensive rating was third-worst in the entire NBA among players who averaged at least 25 minutes per game.</p><p>However, Thomas showed flashes as a playmaker late last season, averaging 5.8 assists over his final five appearances. Fernandez <a href="https://twitter.com/erikslater_/status/1972756357255409957" rel="noopener">is confident</a> his leading scorer can build upon that improvement this season.</p><p>“His playmaking got better, especially towards the end. He had two impressive games where his number of assists and potential assists were unbelievable,” the second-year coach said. “The thing with CT is, teams can decide to try to get the ball out of his hands early or late. That’s where he has to trust the spacing and his teammates. Then if his teammates do their jobs, [defenses] are gonna have to stop doing it, and then he’s gonna be able to score. I think his game can evolve in that way.</p><p>“And then defensively, his effort, I want it to be more consistent, more physical. He’s been great this training camp. His body looks great; he’s done a really great job this summer. The fifth-year guard admitted his failed contract negotiation was “unfortunate” and “frustrating.” He reportedly declined a two-year, $30 million offer and a one-year, $9.5 million offer that required him to waive his no-trade clause.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/brooklyn-nets/nets-news-cam-thomas-signing-6-million-qualifying-offer-stalemate">Thomas will hit unrestricted free agency next summer</a> and have trade veto rights during this season. While many labeled his decision to sign the QO a risky gamble, he said controlling his destiny was his main priority.</p><p>“At the end of the day, I felt like there were more pros to me taking the QO than me taking any other deal,” Thomas told reporters. “You just wanna keep that power that you have as a player as much as you can, as long as you can. So I think that was really the main deciding factor in me taking the qualifying offer… You wanna keep that little bit of power that you have in that QO if you don’t get the long-term deal. It’s part of the business, maybe the ugly part of the business, when you can’t find a common ground,” Marks said. “But at the same time, how he’s developed and the hours that he’s put in the gym, not only here but on his own, speak volumes. The team <a href="https://www.spotrac.com/nba/brooklyn-nets/cap/" rel="noopener">has roughly</a> $17 million in remaining cap space and can get to over $24 million by waiving its players on non-guaranteed contracts.</p><p>The Philadelphia 76ers have reportedly explored trades involving Andre Drummond and Kelly Oubre to open space to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/46-million-contract-quentin-grimes-should-sign-76ers-end-holdout">sign restricted free agent Quentin Grimes</a>. Drummond is on a $5 million expiring contract, while Oubre is in the final year of his deal at $8.38 million. The Nets could absorb either player into their cap space or use the $8.8 million room exception to retain their space. The 23-year-old will hit unrestricted free agency next summer and have a no-trade clause during this season. The failed contract negotiation confirms what Brooklyn fans should have already known: the Nets do not consider Thomas a starting-caliber player, let alone a star.</p><p>There was substantial evidence to suggest this entering Thomas’ free agency. Despite numerous flashes of scoring brilliance, the 2021 first-round pick’s role remained in flux through his first two and a half seasons.</p><p>The Nets’ historic 2025 draft added to questions about Thomas’ future. Brooklyn used three first-round picks on lead ball-handlers, each of whom possesses excellent size and passing ability.</p><p>“It’s 0.5-second basketball, you catch and make a decision. You don’t hold the ball… It’s also where the NBA is going: guys who can play multiple positions, guard multiple positions, and make it hard on the defense,” general manager Sean Marks said when asked about his draft picks.</p><p>The quote was a clear indicator that Thomas — an undersized, shoot-first guard who has been a poor defender throughout his career — would not be a part of the team’s long-term plans.</p><p>Brooklyn’s negotiations with Thomas, who was reportedly seeking an annual salary approaching $30 million, reflected that reality. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Nets <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/46153839/sources-nets-cam-thomas-picks-6m-deal-fa-2026" rel="noopener">offered a</a> two-year, $30 million deal with a team option and a one-year, $9.5 million deal that required Thomas to waive his no-trade clause.</p><p>Thomas declined both, leaving millions on the table to retain the right to choose his next destination. With an inevitable breakup on the horizon, many are questioning: Did the two sides make a mistake?</p><h2>Did Nets or Cam Thomas make a mistake during failed contract negotiation?</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Cam-Thomas-2.jpg"><figcaption>Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>From Thomas’ perspective, it’s difficult to envision the decision not costing him money in the short term. He’ll have to secure a contract worth $24 million in 2026-27 to recoup the amount he left on the table.</p><p>Thomas may feel he can strategically increase his long-term value by hand-picking his next destination. However, passing up a $30 million contract is a risky proposition for a player who has not had a trade or free agent market thus far in his career. The Nets now have little incentive to offer Thomas a featured role this season, which could complicate his market next summer.</p><p>For Brooklyn, Thomas’ signing the qualifying offer is a poor outcome, as they lose control of him as an asset. Yet, Marks and Co. clearly felt that a contract paying the guard $20 million-plus would have negative value. The rest of the league appears to agree.</p><p>Unlike fellow restricted free agents Jonathan Kuminga and Josh Giddey, no team <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/brooklyn-nets/nets-rumors-cam-thomas-30-million-ask-no-interest">had reported interest in pursuing a sign-and-trade for Thomas</a>. Further, the NBA trended away from score-first guards this offseason. The Utah Jazz had to attach a second-round pick to Colin Sexton in a trade for Jusuf Nurkic, the Portland Trail Blazers salary-dumped Anfernee Simons, the Miami Heat acquired Norman Powell essentially for free, and Jordan Clarkson signed for the minimum.</p><p>In an NBA that is more talented and versatile than ever before, there isn’t a market for undersized scoring guards who don’t defend or elevate their teammates offensively. Thomas has done neither up to this point in his career. A contract paying him over $20 million annually would be a bet that he will reassess his approach to the game.</p><p>However, such a change would require a level of self-awareness that Thomas has yet to display. Earlier this offseason, longtime NBA writer and podcaster <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/brooklyn-nets/nets-news-cam-thomas-fires-nsfw-shot-zach-lowe-ball-hog-criticism">Zach Lowe relayed that the consensus around the league on Thomas</a> was “empty calories, ball hog.” The Nets guard’s response did not inspire confidence that he will reevaluate his playstyle.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">The consenus? He’ll likely begin the season with a starting role. However, as the year progresses, it will be difficult for the Nets to justify playing him over their rookies or other young prospects.</p><p>This points to a midseason trade as the most likely outcome. Brooklyn would have to work with Thomas’ representation to find a destination he deems desirable.</p><p>From there, it will be on Thomas to prove the Nets and the rest of his detractors wrong. Doing so will be a tall task. However, Thomas has never lacked confidence in his abilities, for better or worse.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
