In fact, Johnson became valuable enough to the point where he was one of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/suns-news-cam-johnson-says-goodbye-to-phoenix-after-nets-trade" rel="noopener">primary returns in the trade</a> wherein the Brooklyn Nets sent away Kevin Durant.</p><p>One major concern with Johnson is that he’s already 27 years old, so it’s not like there’s plenty of room for him to get better still. But as it is, Johnson should be heavily sought after anyway, as outside the most dynamic shot-creators, 3 and D wings, and elite defensive big men, there’s no more valuable archetype in the league than tall forwards who can stretch the floor.</p><p>Cameron Johnson’s arrival in Brooklyn due to the Durant trade led to a career-best scoring output from the 6’8 sniper, ending the season strong despite being on the wrong end of a sweep against the Philadelphia 76ers during the 2023 NBA playoffs. What’s additionally promising is that Johnson’s efficiency didn’t crater too much despite the heavier offensive workload.</p><p>Johnson’s consistency makes him a strong candidate to command a long-term deal around the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-potential-contract-nets-cameron-johnson-2023-free-agency" rel="noopener">$80 to $90 million range</a>, which has been the usual going rate in free agency for the best three-point specialists in today’s NBA. Whether that contract comes from the Nets or another franchise is a different question entirely, although Brooklyn will have the right of first refusal as Johnson will be entering restricted free agency.</p><p>With that said, here are the 3 best destinations for the lethal marksman that is Cameron Johnson.</p><h2>Brooklyn Nets</h2><p>The Nets are at a point where they will need to remain as competitive as possible even after trading away both Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving back in February. As one would recall, the Nets dealt away a slew of first-round picks when they acquired James Harden back in early 2021.</p><p>That reason alone should motivate the Nets to do what it takes to re-sign Cameron Johnson. Doing so will help them remain competitive, as Johnson’s burgeoning offensive game sets him apart from the Nets’ other more limited wings such as Royce O’Neale, Dorian Finney-Smith, and Joe Harris.</p><p>To further strengthen the Nets’ motivations, Johnson came as one of the primary returns in the Durant deal, in addition to the nascent Mikal Bridges. They will not want to lose one of their core pieces for nothing, especially when they can match any offer sheet that might turn Johnson’s head.</p><p>For Johnson, he’ll have plenty of touches in the Nets offense if he stays. Outside of Spencer Dinwiddie, Mikal Bridges, and Cam Thomas, the Nets don’t have too many players who can create their own shot. Fortunately, one of their key players, Cameron Johnson, should be able to return.</p><p>Phoenix was blessed with positive injury news regarding its 26-year-old forward. Johnson, who injured his knee early in the season, should be able to return <a href="https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10061547-nba-insider-notebook-jae-crowder-confused-and-hurt-by-situation-in-phoenix" rel="noopener">within the next week</a>, according to Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report.</p><p>Haynes writes that Cameron Johnson “recently began participating fully in practices. He told B/R he expects to make his return shortly after the Suns conclude their four-game road trip. Their next home game is Jan. 19 against the Brooklyn Nets, which represents the earliest time Johnson could rejoin the team.”</p><p>Before undergoing a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/suns-news-phoenix-receives-devastating-cam-johnson-injury-update-that-could-end-his-season" rel="noopener">procedure on his torn meniscus</a>, Johnson averaged 13.0 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game while shooting 43.1 percent from deep in eight games this season. Phoenix is 6-1 in the games he played (not counting the one where he got injured early on). His ability to shoot and defend will be helpful but, truthfully, the Suns won’t get back on track until Booker returns.</p><p>The Suns can be one of the better teams in the NBA at full strength. Can Deandre Ayton and the front office work on their differences?</p><p>Paul had some great moments this past season, including a 14-of-14 shooting game in the first round, but he had some of his worst playoff performances in the Western Conference Semifinals. Ayton agreed with terms with the Indiana Pacers, but Phoenix decided to match the four-year, $133 million offer sheet after it seemed like he was on the way out.</p><p>Additionally, the team agreed to an extension with All-Star Devin Booker for four more years worth $224 million.</p><p>While some pieces seem to be secured for the future, some of them still remain a question. One of them is Cameron Johnson, who is entering the final year of his rookie-scale contract.</p><p>The sharpshooter, selected in the lottery and acquired on draft night by the Suns in 2019, had averages of 12.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.5 assists while shooting 46.0% from the field and 42.5% from beyond the arc this past season, all career bests. He mainly came off the bench, only starting 16 of the 66 games he appeared. Because of his impact as a reserve, Johnson finished third in the Sixth Man of the Year Award voting, just behind Tyler Herro and Kevin Love.</p><p>Johnson’s name has come up as a trade candidate for Kevin Durant, but with Ayton back in the fold for now, a KD trade doesn’t seem likely. Uncertainties surrounding the power forward position</b></p><p>Following the team’s elimination in 2022 playoffs, many questioned what the Suns could do to improve its roster. Aside from all the Kevin Durant speculation, one of the things some mentioned was that Phoenix would explore trades involving Jae Crowder.</p><p>The 3-and-D forward has been <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/suns-news-jae-crowders-3-emoji-tweet-amid-heat-trade-rumors/">speculated</a> as a possibility for multiple title contenders, including his former team the Miami Heat, where he would play once again with his former Heat and Marquette teammate Jimmy Butler. Crowder would replace P.J. Tucker, who recently joined the Philadelphia 76ers.</p><p>At 32 years old and entering the final year of his contract worth about $10.2 million, Phoenix should keep an eye on capitalizing on the veteran, especially if they do not plan on keeping him beyond this season.</p><p>The team’s other power forward under contract, Dario Šarić, missed the entire 2021-22 season due to a torn ACL, so it is unclear how the Croatian will perform after sitting out a full year. The other power forward they had was Frank Kaminsky, but he left in free agency to join the Atlanta Hawks.</p><p>Because of that, it might be a better and safe idea to secure Cameron Johnson for the long haul. Having someone who is already familiar with the team and should not demand too much money could be a good solution to the questions at the 4, assuming KD isn’t coming this offseason.</p><p><b>1. Johnson’s yearly improvements</b></p><p>Since entering the league, Cameron Johnson has improved his average in points, rebounds and assists in every single season. At 26, he should be entering his prime very soon and, if the Suns wait too long, he might ask for even more than he is currently projected. Johnson should make around $15 million a season, or even closer to $20 million.</p><p>Should he have a breakout season in this upcoming 2022-23 season, he will likely ask for more and, after the Suns retained Ayton, Booker and Mikal Bridges, it could cause some serious salary cap complications. By securing Johnson at his current value, the Suns could help with future flexibility.</p><p>If the team ends up trading Crowder, Johnson should be the frontrunner to take the starting position. In the 16 games he started last season, his averages jump to 16.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists, plus shooting 49.2% from the field and 42.0% from 3-point land.</p><p>The former North Carolina Tar Heel has shown that he can learn and improve since his college days, where he also increased his point, rebound and assist averages every year. Should he become the starter, his numbers will likely have a significant increase, especially offensively.</p><p>He has also proven to be a reliable defender, and he could improve even more by playing with Bridges. Due to him being 6-foot-8 and his mobility, he could potentially defend four positions. Among all of these players, no one would have expected the Phoenix Suns’ Cameron Johnson to be considered.</p><p>To be fair, the Phoenix Suns’ forward has an intriguing skill set and untapped potential in the market. The thing is, he isn’t just a sexy name in the hobby. His recent performances, meanwhile, show otherwise.</p><h2>Why Cameron Johnson rookie cards are on the rise</h2><p>It isn’t easy to stand out in a team like the Suns. You’ve got a future Hall of Fame inductee in Chris Paul, an elite score in Devin Booker, and a big man that can’t be ignored in Deandre Ayton, among others. That’s why it’s fairly understandable for most collectors to pass on Johnson in the market.</p><p>It doesn’t help too that Johnson’s numbers don’t pop out when one sees them. He’s also adding 4.1 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 26.3 minutes per contest.</p><p>While those stats come in handy for the Suns, they aren’t really top dog material, a factor that can boost a player’s stock in the market. But that isn’t the case during Johnson’s last six games. In a streak of matches against the Houston Rockets, Oklahoma City Thunder, New Orleans, Pelicans, Utah Jazz, Portland Trail Blazers, and New York Knicks, the forward saw himself on the rise in several key aspects of his game.</p><p>In an average of 29.8 minutes during that six-game stretch, John is notching 21.8 points by connecting 58% of his field goals, 57% from beyond the arc, and 92% from the foul line. That’s a 121% spike in value from where it was late last year,</p><p>As the data shows, collectors have been eyeing Johnson as a good buy, especially with his increased offensive role for the Suns. This shows in the recent uptick in his rookie card value, especially during the past few days.</p><h2>The verdict on Cameron Johnson rookie cards</h2><p>It’s true that Johnson’s rookie stock in the hobby isn’t the first one collectors would gravitate to, if given the chance. He isn’t the number one option for the Suns, nor does he consistently get enough minutes every night to build up his value in the market.</p><p>But while all of these things are true, there are several factors that are on the forward’s side. For starters, Johnson is playing for the to-seeded Suns, not only in the Western Conference, but in the entire league.
