And although Massachusetts native <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/celtics-news-georges-niang-public-enemy-no-1-kristaps-porzingis">Georges Niang was hoping to prove himself in Boston</a>, the forward was dealt to the Utah Jazz before he had a chance, departing on Tuesday afternoon <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/celtics-news-boston-salary-dumps-kristaps-porzingis-trade-piece-jazz">as part of a salary-dumping trade</a>.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">The Boston Celtics are trading Georges Niang and two future second-round picks to the Utah Jazz for rookie RJ Luis Jr., sources tell ESPN. <a href="https://t.co/l7h0cGobfU">pic.twitter.com/l7h0cGobfU</a></p><p>— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) <a href="https://twitter.com/ShamsCharania/status/1952824522052088018?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">August 5, 2025</a></p></blockquote><p><script async="" src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p></figure><p>The full swap sent two second-round picks and Niang — who played in over 200 games for the Jazz from 2018 to 2021 — to Utah in exchange for undrafted rookie RJ Luis Jr. But before the NBA world could break down this trade, <a href="https://x.com/ShamsCharania/status/1952829181558943800" rel="noopener">Boston made the news</a> again, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/celtics-news-boston-agrees-contract-historic-raptors-champion-jazz-trade">signing former Toronto Raptor Chris Boucher</a> to a one-year, $3.3 million contract, per ESPN insider Shams Charania.</p><p>Now that the dust has settled, let’s look at the Celtics’ latest offseason business and grade each decision, starting with Niang.</p><h2><b>Celtics trade Georges Niang and 2 second-rounders for RJ Luis Jr.</b></h2><p>While Niang grew up less than an hour from Beantown, there <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/celtics-news-fans-react-jaylen-brown-georges-niang-squashing-beef">weren’t many fans clamoring for him to come home</a>.</p><p>However, the 32-year-old knows what it takes to contribute to a winning culture, as he has the most regular season victories of any player in the 2020s (with just four more than Celtics star Jayson Tatum). Boston could’ve used a veteran presence like that with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/celtics-rumors-al-horford-exit-all-but-confirmed">center Al Horford likely on his way out</a>, and it doesn’t hurt that Niang is also a 39.9% 3-point shooter for his career.</p><p>That still wasn’t enough to convince de facto Celtics general manager Brad Stevens to keep Niang around. Yet, this move, like many of the Celtics’ recent deals, largely revolved around cost-cutting.</p><p>After removing Niang’s $8 million contract and adding Boucher, the Celtics are $7.8 million under the second apron. The 6-foot-7 wing spent his freshman year with the UMass Minutemen before transferring to St. John’s in 2023.</p><p>In Queens, Luis Jr. blossomed into a reliable starter, averaging 18.2 points and 7.2 rebounds per game during the 2024-25 season. For his efforts, he was named Big East Player of the Year, but his college career didn’t have a storybook ending.</p><p>After Luis Jr. helped the Red Storm blow out the Omaha Mavericks in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, he went up against coach John Calipari’s Arkansas Razorbacks. This matchup was a nightmare for the All-American, as he finished with nine points and missed 14 of his 17 field goal attempts in the upset defeat. To make matters even worse, St. John’s coach (and former Celtics skipper) <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/ncaa-basketball/st-johns-basketball-news-rj-luis-transfer-portal-march-madness-benching">Rick Pitino benched Luis Jr. with almost five minutes left</a> in the contest, surely hurting his best player’s draft stock.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">"You know he was 3-17… You're answering your own [question]. The Celtics now have control of that agreement, meaning Luis Jr. can spend time developing with the Maine Celtics, Boston’s G League affiliate.</p><p>Since he’s a subpar 3-point shooter coming off a poor March Madness performance, Luis Jr. has a lot to prove. But, for all his shortcomings, he excelled in one of the toughest conferences in college basketball and has more upside than most undrafted guys.</p><p>Given the addition of his talent and the subtraction of Niang’s contract, this isn’t a bad swap for the Celtics. Of course, it’s more money-related than anything and probably won’t pay dividends immediately, preventing it from truly moving the needle for Boston.</p><p><b>Grade: B</b></p><h2><b>Celtics sign Chris Boucher to a one-year, $3.3 million contract</b></h2><p>It’s no secret that the Celtics were desperate for frontcourt help after losing starting center Kristaps Porzingis and backup big man Luke Kornet this summer.</p><p>Until Tuesday, Boston’s only centers were rookie Amari Williams, first-year Celtic Luka Garza, and potential starter <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/celtics-news-center-neemias-queta-offseason-knee-surgery">Neemias Queta, who’s not too far removed from knee surgery</a>.</p><p>This lackluster group needed a boost, explaining why the C’s brought in Boucher at an affordable price. The 32-year-old center is no longer in his prime, but he still has more experience than every other Celtics center combined.</p><p>Boucher played in at least 50 games for the Toronto Raptors in six consecutive seasons and managed to average 10 points in just over 17 minutes per outing during the 2024-25 campaign. He also understands how the Green Team operates, as he’s played in 22 games against the Celtics, even dropping 30 points on them in a narrow loss back in 2021.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/nba-rumors-celtics-longtime-interest-in-raptors-big-man-hints-at-trade-pursuit">Stevens has an affinity for unheralded players who’ve burned his team</a> — just ask Oshae Brissett, Dalano Banton, and others. Boucher serves as another example of this, except he has a shot at earning more minutes than all of the aforementioned names.</p><p>With Boucher, Boston is addressing an area of need without breaking the bank. That’s essentially Boston’s team-building strategy while Tatum recovers, so Stevens deserves some credit for staying active in free agency.</p><p>Ultimately, the Celtics still aren’t in great shape to seriously contend for a championship at the moment. Boucher is a step in the right direction, yet there’s no guarantee this acquisition is more than a rental amidst a potential down year.</p><p><b>Grade: A-</b></p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The first is said bettor probably needs to get some help if he’s saying things like this after losing money. Instead of blaming Boucher for not scoring enough points, maybe he (or she) should look in the mirror and find better ways to use funds.</p><p>Secondly, saying he chose the wrong slave can have someone thinking there’s a racial issue with that person. The team opted to use Boucher’s Bird rights to complete the deal and overall, the $35.25 million for the power forward is fully guaranteed.</p><p>Boucher did not have a shortage of suitors interested in signing him in free agency. <a href="https://hoopshype.com/lists/nba-rumors-kevin-durant-rudy-gobert-og-anunoby-gary-trent-jr-donte-divincenzo/" rel="noopener">HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto</a> noted that teams such as the Boston Celtics, Milwaukee Bucks, Chicago Bulls, and Brooklyn Nets all expressed intrigue in coming to terms with him on a free agent agreement.</p><p>In the end, there were multiple factors as to why Boucher elected to instead remain in Toronto. Among them, Scotto mentioned that Boucher felt that Toronto has become his “home,” and that he has had a “consistent role” with the team.</p><p>Scotto further adds that Boucher also decided to re-sign with the Raptors because he sees that he can “continue to be given a chance to grow and expand his game.”</p><p>Boucher has blossomed as a keen role player for Raptors head coach Nick Nurse ever since he joined the organization over the 2018 free agency period. They come in and, you know, it’s a little harder than you expect. So it was a good experience for me and made me realize what I really could do.”</p><p>Despite the opposing Philadelphia 76ers entering the game with most of their regular lineups, the Raptors managed to hold firm from tip ’til buzzer, failing to close things out in the final couple minutes as Joel Embiid hammered them in the paint. It was a miraculous effort, with Boucher’s performance guiding them along the way.</p><p>“Biggest thing was he was ready to take the challenge,” head coach Nick Nurse said. “Had another little meeting with him before the game about, you know, ‘You’re giving away a couple pounds tonight so just do your best.’ And he was ready to fight them and I thought he hurt them. They had to get Embiid off him because he was hurting them at the other end, equally or more, to be honest.”</p><p>The 28-year-old was relentless on the boards, grabbing 19 (tying a career-high for the second time) of the team’s 43 total rebounds. He was also hyper-efficient as a scorer, something he’s not been for the vast majority of this season and a role that most were expecting Gary Trent Jr. to fill in his return. Boucher dropped 28 points on on a red-hot 88.8 true shooting percentage, lighting up Philadelphia from distance, around the rim in the half-court, and on the run in transition.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/toronto-raptors/stats" rel="noopener">Only twice has a player posted</a> at least 28 points and 19 rebounds in Raptors history—both were performances from Boucher. The franchise has never had a 30-point, 20-rebound game, although Boucher could have had the latter part if scorekeepers hadn’t ruled what could’ve been his 20th board as a team rebound.</p><p>“They didn’t give me my last rebound, huh?” Raptors talent Chris Boucher asked post-game. “That hurts.” </p><p>This isn’t, of course, the type of performance the Raptors can expect from Boucher every single night. But if he can manage something even half as potent as this game, and regularly avoid being a negative, then perhaps Toronto’s depth will finally begin to look more like itself—something it’s struggled to do all campaign.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Last season, he played within the system, taking shots in the flow of the offense and doing his job on defense. This season, though, the fan’s perception was that he was playing more selfishly: taking shots early in the shot clock, chasing blocks instead of boxing out, the like.</p><p>Clearly, though, Chris Boucher is aware of this. He knows himself that he isn’t playing up to his usual standards. It’s nice to see this sort of introspection from the Raptors forward, and it’s a sign of good things to come for him in the future.</p><p>With OG Anunoby <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/raptors-news-toronto-receives-bad-news-on-og-anunoby-injury/">still missing time due to injury</a>, it’s important for the other Raptors players to step up. Right as the Raptors got a number of key players back, lanky big man Chris Boucher sustained a left knee injury in Wednesday’s contest against the Brooklyn Nets. Luckily, Boucher only suffered a sprained MCL and not a major injury that will definitely knock him out for the season, <a href="https://twitter.com/ShamsCharania/status/1385601817053212672?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1385601817053212672%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fclutchpoints.com%2Fwp-admin%2Fpost.php%3Fpost%3D1117711action%3Dedit" rel="noopener">according to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium.</a></p><p>Boucher’s “return timetable will be based on rehab process.”</p><p>This is a tough blow given the Raptors’ lack of strong depth in the frontcourt after losing Serge Ibaka and Marc Gasol in the offseason. Pascal Siakam is still in place as the 4, but Aron Baynes has been a disappointment at center. Khem Birch could see a bigger opportunity, as could 10-day contract holder Freddie Gillespie.</p><p>The undrafted Boucher is in the midst of a breakout this season, a testament to his perseverance and the Raptors’ ability to develop players. Just look at Siakam, Fred VanVleet, and OG Anunoby.</p><p>Boucher is averaging 13.6 points, 6.7 boards, 1.1 assists, and 1.9 blocks in 24.0 minutes per game. His 3-point attempts have increased considerably from 1.9 to 3.8 per game, but his shooting clip got better and is up to an impressive 38.9%. The big man has been a revelation this season and should be part of Toronto’s plans moving forward.</p><p>The Raptors are currently in the 12th spot in the Eastern Conference with a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/toronto-raptors" rel="noopener">25-34 record.</a> They are within striking distance of the play-in tournament, but Chris Boucher’s injury is a setback, even if it’s not a major one.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

In the end, it was Boucher who snagged the spotlight as he erupted for a career-high 31 points built on six three-pointers.</p><p>After the game, Boucher was hyped for representing Montreal in their 112-106 win (via <a href="https://twitter.com/JLew1050/status/1383962896787394565">Josh Lewenberg of TSN Sports</a>).</p><blockquote>“I really wanted to put Montreal on the map a little bit, just make people realize that we have talent in Montreal. Like Boucher, he was more than happy and proud to play for his city, together with two of Montreal’s finest. The sweet-shooting guard drove hard to the basket which left Boucher wide open on the left wing. Boucher was red-hot all evening long so it was probably not the best decision for the Thunder defense to collapse and leave him with enough room to drain another bucket.</p><p>It was the perfect ending to Chris Boucher’s career night. His final shot was his sixth triple en route to a career-high 31 points. The 28-year-old big man from Canada also added 12 rebounds to help the Raptors claim their third straight victory.</p><p>Not to be outdone by his partner-in-crime, Gary Trent Jr. also had himself quite a night. The 22-year-old former Duke standout had 23 points on five three-pointers, with five rebounds and five steals as his young career with the Raptors is quickly shaping up to be something to watch.</p><p>Don’t look now but despite the absence of key guys, the Raptors are creeping back in the postseason picture with a spot in the play-in tournament in sight.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He was part of the Toronto team that won the 2019 NBA championship. Prior to moving to his home country, Boucher started his time in the league with the Golden State Warriors where he also won a ring in 2018.</p><p>Last season, the athletic power forward played 62 regular season games for head coach Nick Nurse and was a reliable option from the bench. He averaged 6.6 points per game and added 4.5 rebounds in 13.2 minutes played per contest. Although his numbers aren’t really impressive, Boucher has proven that he’s quite the energy guy that can help his team in efficient spurts – something the Raptors would need if they want to compete for another shot at the title this season.</p><p>Boucher is a G-League alum and had quite the stint for the Raptors 905 squad. In his lone season for Toronto’s development team, he was an absolute beast and won both G-League MVP as well as Defensive Player of the Year.
