Heading into his second season with Indiana though, Duarte’s role began to change and his minutes declined drastically. This directly resulted in in his low scoring rates and shooting percentages this past season.</p><p>Looking for a change of scenery this offseason and the Pacers looking to make room for new talent, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kings-news-pacers-nearing-chris-duarte-trade" rel="noopener">Duarte was traded</a> to the Sacramento Kings right ahead of the start of free agency on June 30. Several days later, the full details of this trade have been announced, as ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports that Duarte is heading to the Kings in exchange for <a href="https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1677039294320353280?s=20" rel="noopener">two second-round picks</a>. These picks include the Dallas Mavericks’ 2028 second-round pick and the Kings’ 2030 second-round pick.</p><p>This past season was a magical one for the Kings, as they made the playoffs for the first time since 2006. Mike Brown earned the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kings-news-mike-brown-wins-coach-of-the-year-award-after-snapping-16-year-playoff-drought" rel="noopener">NBA’s Coach of the Year</a> honors in his first season with the organization and both Domantas Sabonis and De’Aaron Fox were named All-Stars. Fox also received the league’s inaugural <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kings-news-deaaron-fox-becomes-first-player-to-win-this-award-amid-nba-playoff-series-vs-warriors" rel="noopener">Clutch Player of the Year</a> award.</p><p>Sacramento has drastically improved their outlook across the league and all of a sudden, they have gone from the bottom of the standings to a team who could very much go on a deep playoff run. On the hunt for more X-factors on their bench, the Kings saw an opportunity to grab Duarte for a cheap price and that is exactly what they did.</p><p>Even though he was a lottery pick not too long ago, the Kings were able to acquire Duarte from the Pacers for nothing more than two future second-round picks that hold little to no value right now other than in trade discussions. With the Pacers looking to cut some salary in order to sign Bruce Brown during free agency, Sacramento was able to get a key three-point shooting weapon that adds depth.</p><p>In 101 total games in his career, Chris Duarte has averaged 10.7 points and 3.4 rebounds per game while shooting 34.7 percent from three-point range. A solid three-point shooter on the perimeter, Duarte will instantly supply the Kings with another scoring option on their bench.</p><p>Sacramento, who finished the 2022-23 season as the NBA’s best offensive team, averaging 120.7 points per game during the regular season. Recently agreeing to terms on a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kings-news-harrison-barnes-free-agency-3-year-54-million-contract/" rel="noopener">new contract extension</a> with veteran Harrison Barnes ahead of the start of free agency, the Kings have now upgraded their bench unit with a younger talent who can fill any role needed off the bench.</p><p>After holding a key role for the Pacers during his rookie season, Duarte averaged under 20 minutes per game this past season in Indiana. With the Pacers selecting Ben Sheppard out of Belmont late in the first-round of this year’s draft and Duarte falling out of the team’s rotation for the vast majority of the season, the writing was on the wall for a potential offseason trade. Duarte will now get a fresh start with a team where he can contribute as a two-way player out on the perimeter.</p><p>Appearing in 46 games during the 2022-23 season with the Pacers, Duarte averaged 7.9 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game while shooting just 31.6 percent from three-point range. At least Chris Duarte’s absence should help his team in <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/victor-wembanyama-hype-going-moon-with-nba-groundbreaking-decision-amid-tanking-concerns/">the race</a> for Victor Wembanyama, right?</p><p><a href="https://twitter.com/wojespn">ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski</a> reports that the third-year wing will be <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/34955195/sources-pacers-chris-duarte-4-6-weeks-ankle-sprain">sidelined for the next four-to-six weeks</a> after suffering a Grade 2 ankle sprain in the Pacers’ win over the Miami Heat on Friday night.</p><p>Chris Duarte, 25, was the No. 13 overall pick of the 2021 NBA draft.</p><p>The former University of Oregon star lived up to pre-draft expectations of early success in his debut campaign, averaging 13.1 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. Duarte shot 43.2% overall and 36.9% from beyond the arc, encouraging overall efficiency considering his lack of NBA experience and at times difficult shot selection.</p><p>He hasn’t replicated that impact in the early going of 2022-23, fighting for playing time with star rookie Bennedict Mathurin and offseason addition Aaron Nesmith.</p><p>Duarte has started five of nine games so far this season, averaging 8.9 points, 2.1 rebounds and one assists in just 19.7 minutes per game. His shooting numbers have dipped across the floor, too, as Duarte reverts back to a more complementary offensive role alongside Mathurin and franchise point guard Tyrese Haliburton.</p><p>Expect Nesmith, when his balky right foot feels good enough for him to play, T.J. McConnell and No. 30 overall pick Aaron Nembhard to get more playing time while Duarte is sidelined.</p><p>The rebuilding Pacers are a surprising 4-5 entering Saturday’s game against the New Orleans Pelicans. Could Duarte’s absence help prompt the slide down the standings that would push the front office to fully embrace rebuilding ahead of next year’s draft? That would’ve sent the former Oregon standout to the line and potentially gave the Pacers a 1-point lead. Sports, and plenty of other online publications.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Editorials</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The Indiana Pacers came into the 2021-22 NBA season as a relatively unknown quantity in the Eastern Conference. Some believed they would be a playoff contender, assuming they could stay healthy, while others expected them to miss the playoffs. Well, 14 games into the season the Pacers hold a 6-8 record and are in relatively the exact same situation as they were to begin the season.</p><p>Unfortunately, the Pacers have been unable to stay healthy this season. Caris LeVert has missed time with injury, T.J. Warren still has not played due to injury, and Malcolm Brogdon has also bee in and out of the lineup with injury issues. Other players have been banged up as well, and things just haven’t gone smoothly for Indiana.</p><p>Despite the health issues that the Pacers have already had, they have remained competitive. Two of their losses came by just one point to begin the season against the Charlotte Hornets and Washington Wizards. They also lost to a Denver Nuggets team without Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray, and Michael Porter Jr.</p><p>However, on the flip side of the negative, the Pacers were able to head into Utah and knock off the Jazz. They have looked great and bad at the same time this season. With that in mind, no one knows what to expect from the Pacers still.</p><p>All of that being said, the Pacers are still very confident that they can be a force in the East. They have a lot of talent on their roster and have been competitive for the most part. One player in particular has become their main X-Factor for the rest of the season.</p><h2><b>The Pacers’ X-Factor For 2021-22</b></h2><p>A lot of fans would guess that rookie wing Chris Duarte would be the main Pacers’ X-Factor for the rest of the season. That isn’t the case, however. Instead, veteran point guard T.J. McConnell has become the main X-Factor.</p><p>McConnell has become a fan favorite for the Pacers and was rewarded for his play over the last two years with a lucrative four-year, $35.2 million contract in free agency. With that contract under his belt, McConnell has not changed the hard-nosed play that made him loved in Indiana to begin with.</p><p>So far this season in 14 games, with five of those appearances being starts, McConnell has averaged a career-high 10.4 points per game to go along with 5.6 assists, 3.4 rebounds, and 0.9 steals per game. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/indiana-pacers/stats" rel="noopener">His defensive effort</a> is never questioned, but it is his offense that has begun making him a dangerous weapon for the Pacers.</p><p>No one will look at McConnell as being a lethal three-point threat, but he has improved that area of his game a lot. McConnell has shot 38.9 percent from the three-point line this season, up from just 31.3 percent last season. Whether or not he can maintain that shooting increase for the rest of the season or not will remain to be seen.</p><p>Indiana has also relied heavily on McConnell running the offense. Rick Carlisle has utilized Brogdon much more off the ball, which is a much more favorable situation for Brogdon. That has also allowed McConnell to play his game of running the offense, slashing off the ball, and creating mid-range pull-up opportunities for himself.</p><p>Due to the injury issues that Brogdon has dealt with this season, and in years past, McConnell has become an even more important piece for the Pacers. He is the go-to point guard when Brogdon is unable to play. McConnell has displayed excellent chemistry with both Domantas Sabonis and Myles Turner, and has constantly created open looks for perimeter players as well.</p><p>While we’re talking about his offense, his defense also needs to be discussed more. McConnell is the Pacers’ best on-ball perimeter defender. He works his tail off each and every night, diving for loose balls, working hard through screens, and terrorizing opponents in the passing lanes. McConnell has not averaged as many steals as he did last season, but those numbers will come.</p><p>For a team that has desperately needed better bench play, McConnell has been a consistent presence. Indiana truly knows what they are going to get from the 29-year-old point guard each and every night. They’ll get hard work and a blue collar style of play, which is something that Kevin Pritchard absolutely loves about McConnell.</p><p>Granted, the Pacers still need to keep guys healthy, and when they do, McConnell will be an even bigger X-Factor. He is the heart and soul of this Pacers team and creates energy in his teammates. It’s hard to find guys like that, and Indiana has a good one.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
