He joined ClutchPoints in 2023.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-spike-lee-puts-celtics-notice">The New York Knicks are looking to challenge the Boston Celtics</a> for Eastern Conference supremacy this year following their shocking trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves for Karl-Anthony Towns. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-karl-anthony-towns-has-hilarious-reaction-after-ending-preseason-drought">Towns is already starting to look comfortable</a> in his new threads, and New York is now just one week ago from kicking off their season in Boston.</p><p>The Knicks of course are led by star point guard Jalen Brunson, who put together the best season of his career a year ago and looks poised for another All-NBA caliber campaign in 2024-25.</p><p>Recently, former Washington Wizards star Gilbert Arenas hit Brunson with <a href="https://x.com/ClutchPoints/status/1846243368827080850" rel="noopener">a lofty comparison</a> that perfectly encapsulates what he brings to the table as a point guard, via the Gils Arena Show podcast.</p><p>“He’s a scoring Chris Paul,” said Arenas. “…Brunson ain’t going to hit two threes and then come down and try to take a 40 footer just for a heat check.”</p><p>While Brunson’s passing ability might not be quite up to the all-time great level of future Hall of Famer Chris Paul, he does bring a floor general quality to the game, one that the Knicks were sorely missing before his arrival during the 2022 offseason.</p><h2><b>Is this the year for the Knicks?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Brunson-during-preseason.jpg"><figcaption>Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Towns move made it clear, if it wasn’t abundantly so already, that the Knicks’ brass are pushing all of their chips into the center of the table for this upcoming 2024-25 season.</p><p>Prior to that deal, the Knicks had already resigned OG Anunoby to a long term contract as well as traded a shocking amount of first round draft picks for Mikal Bridges of the crosstown rival Brooklyn Nets.</p><p>By adding Towns, New York shored up the one true weakness on its roster in its frontcourt depth, something that was going to be a major concern with Mitchell Robinson expected to miss the opening chunk of the season due to injury.</p><p>The Knicks also alleviated themselves of the stress of having to count on Julius Randle to produce in the playoffs, and also provided more spacing to their offense for Brunson to have room to operate both in isolation and within the flow of the game.</p><p>Now, New York can run two-big lineups similar to what Towns did with the Minnesota Timberwolves once Robinson is healthy or can play a five out style, depending on the opponent.</p><p>In any case, the Knicks’ season is set to begin on October 22 on the road vs the Celtics at 7:30 PM ET.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Paul is on the tail end of his career so the move seemed to make sense, as the future Hall-of-Fame point guard can help the young Spurs team get over the hump in the Western Conference and learn how to win.</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>But, per the latest episode of ESPN’s <i>Hoop Collective</i> podcast,<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b45EnDwFkrM&amp;t=1029s" rel="noopener"> Paul’s name is one we all should be monitoring</a> in the trade market.</p><p>“For a guy like Chris Paul who at this point in his career is not trying to play on a team that’s whatever number they end up at is not ultimately in contention, it makes sense for him to be on a team that’s in contention in a few months,” ESPN NBA Insider Tim Bontemps said.</p><p>Brian Windhorst, the host of <i>Hoop Collective</i>, cautioned curious NBA fans who might think that they’re implying that Paul will be dealt anytime soon.</p><p>“And to be clear, the Spurs are not intending for that to happen, but the number that he signed for, there’s a reason that he wanted that number.”</p><p>Fellow ESPN NBA Insider Tim McMahon followed up, saying, “It left options open. Also was he going to get that much from somewhere else anyways.”</p><p>Windhorst then made the point that although he just signed with the Spurs, there was a reason they agreed to sign him for that $11 million deal in terms of trading him if necessary.</p><p>“No I agree but why $11 million, why not 13, why not 8. He got basically the most he could get with keeping that door open.”</p><p>The line of thinking makes sense. At 39, Paul only has a few more opportunities to compete for a championship before he calls it quits on his career. Playing with a possible generational player is surely a plus and possibly motivated him to join the Spurs, Paul could look to play for a championship contender and he and the Spurs could work out a trade before the trade deadline in February.</p><p>But, as of now, Paul seems committed to playing for the Spurs. In the end, following a topsy-turvy end to the ballgame, it was the Minnesota Lynx that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lynx-news-napheesa-collier-striking-admission-miracle-win-vs-liberty">came out on top in overtime</a>, 95-93, against the New York Liberty team that has been the WNBA’s cream of the crop all season long.</p><p>This hotly-contested game between two of the best teams in the WNBA all season long has captured the attention of plenty of fans, with San Antonio Spurs guard Chris Paul among those who were keeping tabs on the proceedings. Paul <a href="https://x.com/CP3/status/1844566435130974538" rel="noopener">was very impressed</a> with the high level of game play from both the Lynx and Liberty, which is simply fitting for a Finals matchup.</p><p>“Lynx vs Liberty game is so damn good!! Great Basketball being played!!!!! Big shot making!! #WNBAFinals,” Paul wrote on his official account on X, formerly known as Twitter.</p><p>A bit of insanity ensued to end Game 1 for both teams. Down three with only five seconds to go in the ballgame, Lynx guard Courtney Williams made a three and then sank the ensuing free throw from the foul to give Minnesota an 84-83 lead. However, with plenty of time left on the clock, Liberty star Breanna Stewart drove hard to the hoop and drew a foul on the reigning Defensive Player of the Year Napheesa Collier with a chance to win the game with 0.1 remaining on the clock.</p><p>Stewart then proceeded to split a pair of free throws, sending the game to overtime as a result. That was when the Lynx and Liberty, like two heavyweights in the middle of the ring, traded blows. But the Lynx managed to land the decisive blow, with Collier nailing a tough fall-away jumpshot from near the free-throw line to give Minnesota the 95-93 lead that was enough for the victory.</p><p>It wasn’t as if Collier’s dagger was the nail in the Liberty’s coffin. The Liberty had a golden chance to tie the game, but Stewart hit all glass on a layup attempt — an unfortunate misfire from one of the greatest players the league has ever seen.</p><p>If the rest of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sky-news-angel-reese-honest-take-lynx-liberty-wnba-finals-series">Lynx and Liberty’s WNBA Finals clash</a> will be anything as exciting as Game 1, then fans better buckle up for the incredible basketball that is in store.</p><h2><b>Lynx outgun Liberty in WNBA Finals instant classic</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Lynx-celebrate-after-defeating-the-Liberty-in-overtime.jpg"></figure><p>There’s nothing better in basketball when there is a sense of desperation that both teams cannot shake, leading to some spirited performances on the court. Fans can sense when players put everything on the line in the name of victory, and in Game 1 of the 2024 WNBA Finals, that was certainly the case for both the Lynx and Liberty.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lynx-news-napheesa-collier-reveals-wnba-finals-trip-sweeter">Lynx simply refused to quit</a>. They were down by 15 with a little over five minutes to go in the ballgame, but then they put their foot down defensively which then opened up the opportunity for their offense to come alive. Even in the possession where Courtney Williams made an and-one triple to snatch the lead away from the Liberty, the Lynx showed some incredible fighting spirit, as they fought for an offensive board to keep the play alive following an initial miss from Williams.</p><p>Meanwhile, the Liberty must be lauded for their efforts to avoid a choke job as well, as disappointing as relinquishing a 15-point lead may be. During the Spurs’ preseason game against the Orlando Magic, new point guard Chris Paul set up Victor Wembanyama with <a href="https://x.com/spurs/status/1844176949960376723" rel="noopener">a perfect alley-oop pass</a> for the slam dunk.</p><p>During the play, Chris Paul drove baseline and found Victor Wembanyama cutting down the middle for the alley-oop slam. The fans in the arena went crazy after the play with the Spurs social media account stating that it’s only the first of many to come.</p><p>When the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/what-chris-paul-is-excited-about-after-joining-san-antonio-spurs">Spurs added Paul in the offseason</a> as a free agent, this was the expectation, that he would be able to consistently get the ball to Wembanyama and get him easy scoring opportunities. The French sensation did not have a point guard of that caliber of playmaking during his rookie season.</p><p>Having Paul alongside Wembanyama will certainly help with his development. Although Paul is in the twilight of his NBA career, he is still an effective point guard and playmaker. He became an unrestricted free agent when the Golden State Warriors opted not to guarantee his contract for this season. The future Hall of Famer then opted to sign with the Spurs.</p><p>Paul appeared in 58 games with the Warriors last year, including 18 starts at a little over 26 minutes per game. He averaged 9.2 points, 3.9 rebounds, 6.8 assists and 1.2 steals with splits of 44.1 percent shooting from the field, 37.1 percent shooting from the three-point line and 82.7 percent shooting from the free-throw line.</p><p>Wembanyama, on the other hand, was the NBA’s Rookie of the Year. The No. 1 overall pick started all 71 games he appeared in with the Spurs at a little over 29 minutes per game. He averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.2 steals and a league-leading 3.6 blocked shots. He shot 46.5 percent from the field, 32.5 percent from the three-point line and 79.6 percent from the free-throw line.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The Point God knew that Caitlin Clark had lofty expectations coming out of college and she exceeded them, making it very clear that she’s the real deal who is going to be one of the best players to ever step foot in the WNBA.</p><p>Clark literally broke over 20 records in the ’24 season, finishing with averages of 19.2 points, 8.4 assists, and 5.7 rebounds on 41.7% shooting from the field. She single-handedly brought more eyes to the WNBA after shining at the college level with the University of Iowa. The women’s game has skyrocketed in popularity, much in part to Clark and Reese as well.</p><p>On top of her personal accolades, Clark also took the Fever back to the playoffs for the first time since 2016. Sure, it’s not exactly a promising sign that they won just 22 games last season despite adding one of the best defenders in the league in transcendent talent Victor Wembanyama. But it showed the areas of the ball where they needed a lot of work in, and it looks as though they’ve <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/reasons-why-spurs-chris-paul-deal-massive-steal">managed to fill those gaps</a> this offseason.</p><p>For starters, the point guard situation last season was a mess. Jeremy Sochan showed that he is not a natural floor general, while Tre Jones, as good and willing of a playmaker as he is, leaves a lot to be desired on offense. Moreover, the Spurs’ wing depth last season wasn’t great, as they had to rely on Julian Champagnie to start at the three.</p><p>They rectified those situations this offseason by signing Chris Paul and acquiring Harrison Barnes in a salary dump. Paul is not the player he once was, but he makes sure that the offensive execution is on point. Meanwhile, Barnes gives the Spurs some size and scoring on the wing, allowing Keldon Johnson to thrive as a spark plug off the bench.</p><p>Leaps from Devin Vassell, Malaki Branham, and Sochan are possible given how young they are, while Stephon Castle could be an impact player from day one thanks to his defense. This marks the first game with Kalen DeBoer as head coach. The former Washington Huskies coach took over once <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/alabama-football-news-nick-saban-retires-coaching">Nick Saban announced his retirement</a>.</p><p>It is a new era in Tuscaloosa after years with Saban running the show and winning championships. But, the Alabama pedigree still remains high. Recently, they have had several big-name guests come to the facilities, including former Alabama football star Mark Ingram and then <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/alabama-football-news-jj-watt-wisconsin-endorsement">NFL legend JJ Watt</a>.</p><p>On Tuesday, veteran NBA point guard <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/spurs-news-chris-paul-teaming-up-with-victor-wembanyama-on-11-million-contract">Chris Paul, who recently signed with the San Antonio Spurs</a>, made his way to the facilities and shared a message with the team. Jalen Milroe is back and expected to be one of the best quarterbacks in the country.</p><p>What makes things a bit difficult is the SEC got more difficult with Texas and Oklahoma joining. Nonetheless, DeBoer’s success at Washington will hopefully translate well in Alabama. While the future Hall of Famer has been a bit of a journeyman over the last several years, the Bay Area was supposed to essentially represent a last stop for the now 39-year-old. It came a couple of weeks after the Phoenix Suns moved Paul to the Washington Wizards in the Bradley Beal deal, meaning the Dubs looked at Paul as a piece they hoped would get them back in contention after they’d won the 2022 NBA championship.</p><p>At 46-36, the Warriors did <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=buQQ4e7VTm4" rel="noopener">improve by two wins</a> last regular season, but unlike the year before they didn’t reach the playoffs thanks to a play-in loss to the same Sacramento Kings franchise they beat in a thrilling seven-game first-round series in 2023. With an aging core, general manager Mike Dunleavy, Jr. changed course this summer. While Paul entered free agency, Klay Thompson is now with the Dallas Mavericks via trade.</p><p>The Saturday before Thanksgiving will not only pit Paul against Steph Curry and Draymond Green for the first time in 2024-2025, but it will also mark a first look at guys like Kyle Anderson, Buddy Hield, and De’Anthony Melton now that the Warriors feature a different look. It’s an opportunity for the Wake Forest alum to remind Golden State about what they no longer have. On February 7, the Spurs visit the Hornets. On November 4, they visit the Clippers. The Rockets are the opponents in San Antonio’s first two home games of the season on October 26 and 28. Two nights later the Spurs are at the Thunder. The Suns traded him for Bradley Beal of the Washington Wizards, as they went all in on a Big Three with Beal, Kevin Durant, and Devin Booker. Then, the Wizards dealt him to the Warriors in exchange for Jordan Poole.</p><p>In Paul’s <a href="https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/chris-paul-stats-with-warriors" rel="noopener">lone season</a> with the Warriors, he played 58 games and averaged 9.2 points, 6.8 assists, and 3.9 rebounds. It was a decent showing, but after the Sacramento Kings eliminated them from the play-in, the Warriors decided not to retain his services and waived him in free agency.</p><p>So, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/spurs-news-chris-pauls-bargain-contract-comes-eye-opening-incentives">Chris Paul signed with the Spurs</a> for a chance to mentor the generational prospect <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/spurs-news-victor-wembanyama-rookie-of-the-year">Victor Wembanyama, last season’s Rookie of the Year</a>. He was also a finalist for Defensive Player of the Year, ultimately bowing out to Minnesota Timberwolves big man Rudy Gobert. In his debut season with the Spurs, Wemby played 71 games and averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 3.9 assists.</p><p>Paul’s 19 years of NBA experience and basketball IQ should be a perfect match for a Spurs team still learning to play with a bonafide superstar. The team finished last season with a dismal 22-60 record, despite Wembanyama looking like a certified all-time player. If Paul’s leadership pans out, the Spurs might be a legitimate threat to make the playoffs, the same way he guided a young Oklahoma City Thunder team to the postseason in 2020.</p><h2><b>More new looks</b></h2><p>Last season, the Mavericks reached the Finals for the first time since their championship year in 2011. However, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-most-to-blame-for-nba-finals-loss-to-celtics">Mavs lost to the Boston Celtics</a> in five games, prompting the front office to make some changes and acquire new players. One of these acquisitions was the massive six-team sign-and-trade for Klay Thompson, who was also coming off a disappointing final year with the Warriors.</p><p>Now, the team hopes to bring out the best in Thompson by forming a Big Three with Doncic and Irving. Wembanyama is going for the gold this weekend in the Olympics but when he returns stateside, the quest to elevate the team into contention resumes. The Spurs <a href="https://x.com/MikeAScotto/status/1821946740267725035" rel="noopener">added potential wing depth</a> on Friday with the signing of Brandon Boston Jr. in NBA free agency as per Michael Scotto of Hoopshype.com</p><p>Boston’s contract with the team is for one year and is non-guaranteed meaning he is going to have to fight for a roster spot in training camp. The Spurs made <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/spurs-news-san-antonio-adds-firepower-with-acquisition-50-point-scorer">another noteworthy move</a> this past week in NBA free agency with the signing of Malachi Flynn. Flynn is also on a non-guaranteed contract and will have to impress in camp.</p><p>As it stands, the Spurs already have 15 guaranteed contracts on their roster. In order for Boston or Flynn to earn a spot on the regular roster, the Spurs will either have to make a trade in which they send out more players than they take back, or they will have to cut a guaranteed deal.</p><p>Boston does potentially have another pathway to making the team in the form of a two-way contract. Since he has only three years of NBA experience, he is eligible for a two-way deal. The Spurs currently have all three of their two-way spots occupied in David Duke Jr., Jamaree Bouyea and Harrison Ingram. But those deals do not count against the cap and can be waived easily should they have another player in mind for one of those spots. Flynn is not eligible for a two-way deal.</p><h2><b>Brandon Boston Jr. gets another chance with Spurs roster<br></b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Brandon-Boston-Jr.jpg"><figcaption>Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Brandon Boston Jr. comes to the Spurs having spent the previous three seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers. Boston was the No. 51 overall pick and was traded to the Clippers by the Memphis Grizzlies on draft day.</p><p>Boston only played sparingly for the Clippers and was never able to crack the rotation consistently. He spent most of his time in the G League playing for the Ontario Clippers. He had a few big performances in the G League but that never really translated to the NBA.</p><p>A big part of the reason though was that the Clippers were a veteran team with sights set on a championship. But on the other hand, Boston never really gave the staff enough confidence that he could be a regular rotation guy working towards that end.</p><p>Across three seasons with the Clippers, Boston averaged 6.2 points and 1.8 rebounds with splits of 39.6 percent shooting from the field, 31.3 percent shooting from the three-point line and 69.7 percent shooting from the free-throw line.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
