Though this is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/los-angeles-clippers/clippers-news-chris-paul-nba-history-retirement-announcement">Paul’s last season in the league</a>, he has shown that he still has some value on a contending team, and there are <a href="https://x.com/i/broadcasts/1djGXWOawRVKZ" rel="noopener">three specific teams</a> that could look to add him, according to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints.</p><p>“There has been some interest in him from some teams who expressed interest in him during the offseason,” Siegel said. “Some other teams have point guard needs and I wouldn’t be shocked if how we were last year and Dennis Schroder was traded to the Warriors, I wouldn’t be shocked if we saw something similar this year with Chris Paul where he winds up going to a contender where he contribute whether that’s in the starting lineup or off the bench with 15 to 18 minutes a game.</p><p>“If he wants to go to a team like the Minnesota Timberwolves or the Houston Rockets, two teams that have been rumored to have a level of interest in Chris Paul… Another one that had interest in him over the offseason that I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re interested in him again is the New York Knicks.”</p><p>Paul would be a nice addition to any three of those teams, but there’s a chance that he would not be a starter in those situations. The Rockets would be the one team where he could have the chance to start, and with not much depth at the guard position, he would get some key minutes.</p><p>To end his career, Paul wanted the chance to stay close to family, but at this point, he will have to sacrifice that dream a little bit and broaden his horizons if he wants to play in his final season.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

It impacted a young group of players in the best kind of ways, led by first-round pick Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and two-way guard Lu Dort. As a proud dad watches a kid graduate college, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/oklahoma-city-thunder/exclusive-shai-gilgeous-alexander-dad-chris-paul-thunder-teammates">Paul watched the Thunder blossom into NBA champions</a> in 2025.</p><p>Half a decade removed from his lone season with Gilgeous-Alexander and Oklahoma City, Paul was sitting courtside for Game 2 of the NBA Finals at the Paycom Center, and before Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals against the Minnesota Timberwolves, when SGA was presented with his MVP trophy.</p><p>Gilgeous-Alexander credits Paul for <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/47258039/how-chris-paul-helped-shape-oklahoma-city-thunder-budding-dynasty" rel="noopener">showing him the ropes</a> throughout his second NBA season, first with the Thunder, he said, per ESPN’s Tim MacMahon.</p><p>“Chris really was the first person to show me what it meant to be a professional,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “He was always doing extra. It was more so off the court than on the court. It was the things you don’t think about as a kid. As a kid, you’re taught to just work super hard, but you’re not really taught nutrition and taking care of your body, getting massages, getting treatment, those type of things he was always on top of.</p><p>“He just always had a get-better mentality in every way, in every way of life.”</p><p>Paul, who was at a crossroads in his career, knew his time with the Thunder was temporary because the organization was undergoing a complete rebuild. Both he and the Thunder front office were on the same page regarding Chris’ long-term plans. However, that didn’t mean Oklahoma City couldn’t be competitive in a loaded Western Conference.</p><p>Paul would invite his teammates to his house for team dinners, giving Thunder prospects a peek into how a future Hall of Fame guard, as CP3, studies game film, breaks down teams’ game plans, and maintains a strict diet. As he connected with his new team, Paul took the time to get to know the players.</p><p>“We’d just be chilling,” Gilgeous-Alexander told ESPN recently. “But how we used to watch the games, he was never, like, just watching them. He was always watching ’em to learn.”</p><p>Some of the lessons learned from that one season with Paul still stick with Gilgeous-Alexander and Dort, to this day, including the iPad Lu uses to study game film and the essential app that comes with it. Both were gifted to Dort, an undrafted prospect on a two-way deal at the time, by Paul and are still in use in 2025.</p><p>It’s one of the many tools that’s helped mold Dort into an All-Defensive First Team guard considered one of the better on-ball defenders in the NBA. The Thunder finished 44-28, fifth in the Western Conference. However, it wasn’t always smooth sailing between Paul and his new Thunder teammates. As with any process that yields growth, there are always ups and downs before progress is made.</p><p>When Dort would pass up open threes, Paul reprimanded the young guard on a non-guaranteed deal, shooting at a 29.7% clip from beyond the arc. For Paul, Lu’s defensive efforts warranted him to take more shots despite his poor shooting percentage. Today, Dort connects on 41.2% of his threes.</p><p>One day, Gilgeous-Alexander received a morning phone call on an off-day during an early-season road trip.</p><p>“Let’s go lift,” Paul said, more of a demand than a suggestion, as ESPN’s MacMahon noted.</p><p>Shai Gilgeous-Alexander revealed he thought weight-lifting was more of an offseason workout for guards. Chris Paul showed him otherwise before the two Thunder teammates began lifting together regularly.</p><p>“Those are things that when you’re teammates, that’s just normal,” Paul said. “If I got something going on and they can help me, they help me. If they got something going on, that’s just a teammate, [sharing] the knowledge. With them being younger, I was just trying to show [them]. I think that’s the importance of vets.”</p><p>The fifth-seeded Thunder lost its opening-round series to the Houston Rockets, 4-3, but it was an overachieving season for Oklahoma City. Paul averaged 17.6 points, 6.7 assists, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.6 steals. He made the All-NBA Second Team, finished seventh in MVP voting, and would lead the Phoenix Suns to an NBA Finals appearance in 2020-21.</p><h2><b>Why things didn’t work out with Chris Paul, Clippers</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Thunders-Shai-Gilgeous-Alexander-Chris-Paul-2.jpg"><figcaption>Alonzo Adams-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>So, how come the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/los-angeles-clippers/clippers-news-chris-paul-true-feelings-la-release">Clippers weren’t able to leverage Chris Paul’s strengths</a>? What are the contrasting differences between Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the 2019-20 Thunder and this year’s Clippers squad? A lot.</p><p>For starters, the average age on Los Angeles’ roster is 33.2, the oldest in NBA history, making it a difficult time to instill change. Not to suggest Paul’s leadership style mirrored his approach to the manner in which he spoke to a 19-year-old Lu Dort in Oklahoma City. However, given what we know about Chris’s vocal style, it isn’t easy to imagine a quiet CP3 amid a 6-18 start.</p><p>Paul’s voice couldn’t have resonated the way it once did because the audience’s age had changed, as had his impact on the basketball court — making things infinitely more difficult. Paul was averaging 2.9 points and 3.3 assists in 14.3 minutes before he was abruptly sent home in the middle of the night. Aging NBA stars can sympathize with an All-Star losing a step or two, but this felt as if it went beyond Chris’ game and his approach.</p><p>Sending one of your franchise’s all-time best players home on the road during the wee hours feels way more personal than most shocking NBA moves in recent history.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Lamenting his release will not do much good. The 40-year-old has long cemented his place in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and should be able to sleep soundly at night. Now, the seven-time All-Defensive First-Teamer has to ask himself how he wants to end his career.</p><p>There are plenty of squads that could use the wealth of experience and basketball wisdom that Chris Paul has to offer. He will likely continue to spend most of his time on the bench, but perhaps he can still add value. In a move that completely took the NBA world by surprise, Paul was cut by Los Angeles seemingly out of the blue.<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/los-angeles-clippers/clippers-news-chris-paul-scarred-l-a-situation-not-ruling-out-joining-new-team"> Even Paul himself was surprised by the move</a>. The ensuing chaos has brought to light the dysfunction in the current Clippers team.</p><p>Had we looked a little bit deeper earlier this year, we might have seen that the cracks were starting to show. Back in late November, Paul posted a cryptic IG story. In the story, the Clippers star just put a screenshot of the definition of the word “leeway”. Fans, of course, were confused about what was going on.</p><p>Well, Chris Haynes is here to<a href="https://x.com/ChrisBHaynes/status/1997182705952555096" rel="noopener"> give us the lowdown on what exactly happened</a>. The insider said that the cryptic post came after a disagreement between Paul and coach Jeff Van Gundy. Paul’s suggested defensive coverage against the Mavericks was not taken well by Van Gundy, leading to an argument between the two.</p><p>“Jeff Van Gundy called a meeting on the plane with Chris Paul and asked him if he changed the defensive assignment,” Haynes said on the NBA on Prime show. “Chris said, ‘No, I didn’t change the assignment. I just suggested we might want someone else on Klay because Kawhi wasn’t warm yet.’”</p><p>Van Gundy didn’t take too kindly to Paul’s comments, saying, “You might have had leeway in other places to change defensive coverages, but you don’t have that leeway here.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/los-angeles-clippers/clippers-news-blake-griffin-disappointed-shocking-chris-paul-decision">Once one of the most respected players in Clippers history, it’s sad to see Paul’s final year fizzle out like this.</a> The veteran has already taken a bench role this season due to his struggles. When the two sides reunited this past offseason, fans anticipated an amicable final run together.</p><p>That is not what happened, though. The 40-year-old now has the opportunity to join a championship contender, which the Clippers are clearly not. Even so, he obviously did not expect such an abrupt split. They endured their share of pitfalls — a blown 3-1 series lead versus the Houston Rockets in the 2015 Western Conference Semifinals especially stands out — but it was still <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/los-angeles-clippers/clippers-news-chris-paul-facetime-blake-griffin-deandre-jordan-fans-feelings">the most prosperous era of Clippers basketball</a> the city had ever experienced. Griffin is forever grateful for Paul’s tutelage and contributions. He does not think management showed the same level of appreciation.</p><p>“He brought a winning culture,” Blake Griffin said. “He taught us how to operate in the NBA and how to take every game seriously, how to take your body seriously. There was no detail that was too small. We we weren’t perfect… and CP and I didn’t always see eye to eye, but I’m disappointed because we got to a franchise that was synonymous with jokes.</p><p>“We didn’t win a championship, but we did create a culture and environment that people respected. Chris Paul, for 20 years, has been the same player. He’s been about winning.”</p><p>Griffin’s esteem for the four-time All-NBA First-Teamer is undeniable. He perfectly highlighted the impact Paul made for a team that was once considered the Los Angeles Lakers’ forlorn roommate. But the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/ncaa-football/clippers-news-kawhi-leonard-did-a-double-take-on-chris-paul-shocker">Clippers felt a second breakup was necessary</a>. In a recent comment talking about possibly signing with a new organization this season, Paul reveals that he’s “scarred” by what transpired in L.A.</p><p>Paul, who is 40 years old, claimed that he’s staying fit in case another team wants to sign him at any point in the 2025-26 campaign. However, he doesn’t appear to be rushing an opportunity, after saying <a href="https://x.com/TheSteinLine/status/1997087851285000218" rel="noopener">he’s still trying to process</a> what happened with the Clippers, according to NBA Insider Marc Stein.</p><p>“I’m just staying ready,” said Chris Paul. “I’m hooping right now. I don’t know what’s next. I’m still scarred by it all. Still processing everything. But I’m staying ready.”</p><p>The 21-year veteran <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/los-angeles-clippers/clippers-rumors-james-harden-signing-chris-paul-offseason">played 16 games before the Clippers</a> decided to let him go. He was playing the fewest minutes in his entire career, averaging just 14.3 minutes per contest. When he saw the court, Chris Paul was averaging just 2.9 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game while shooting 32.1% from the field and 33.3% from beyond the three-point line.</p><p>Chris Paul was let go shortly after he announced he planned on retiring at the end of the 2025-26 season. So, the Clippers’ decision to release him came as a shock to many. It was a situation that had many former players call out the organization for releasing the 12-time All-Star.</p><p>We’ll see if another team plans on signing Chris Paul or not. It could take some time, as it’s possible a playoff contender in need of a point guard could call Paul late in the season. He is also a professor of sociology.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Los Angeles Clippers</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The fallout over the LA Clippers <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/los-angeles-clippers/why-chris-paul-decision-first-of-many-clippers-moves-to-come">letting Chris Paul go</a> abruptly <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/los-angeles-clippers/clippers-news-chris-paul-nba-history-retirement-announcement">in his final NBA season</a> continues to worsen.</p><p>According to reports, James Harden <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_gOzzxY15w&amp;t=193s" rel="noopener">allegedly expressed disagreement</a> at the idea of the Clippers signing Paul in the first place, per Kevin O’Connor of The Kevin O’Connor Show on Yahoo Sports.</p><p>On Friday, O’Connor, alongside Tate Frazier, said that Harden was not keen on Paul joining the Clippers.</p><p>“I mean, absolutely a failure of leadership for sure, and I think you know what they say publicly is one thing,” O’Connor said. “I’ve heard from multiple sources that James Harden was opposed to the Chris Paul signing, that he was one of the guys who was like, ‘Eh, I’m not so sure here.” And then this ended up happening.”</p><p>If Harden wasn’t into Paul being part of the team, and this happens, is that a coincidence?</p><p>Presently, the situation involving the Clippers couldn’t be any worse. So far, they have a record of 6-16. Also, some of their <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/los-angeles-clippers/clippers-news-derrick-jones-jr-out-at-least-6-weeks-mcl-sprain">key players are battling injuries</a>. With everything they are dealing with now, both on and off the court, stigma is becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy.</p><p>On the court, the injuries piling up have led to a significant lack of depth.
