Fresh off their first playoff appearance since 2020, the Rockets sense that their contending window is wide open and took advantage of it accordingly,<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/houston-rockets/nba-rumors-rockets-suns-kevin-durant-deal-could-expand-historic-7-team-trade"> trading for Kevin Durant to remedy their halfcourt scoring woes</a>, and then signing Dorian Finney-Smith to replace the 3-and-D contributions of Dillon Brooks, who was traded to the Phoenix Suns in the Durant deal.</p><p>But then the Rockets surprised the NBA world when reports came out that they had agreed to a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/houston-rockets/rockets-news-clint-capela-returns-houston-contract-free-agency">three-year, $21.5 million deal with Clint Capela</a>, reuniting with their starting center from 2016 to early 2020. If there’s a position that the Rockets had already shored up, it was at center; they have All-Star Alperen Sengun starting, the resurgent Steven Adams, armed with a new contract, backing him up, and Adams’ fellow Oceanian, Jock Landale, around as the third-string center just in case it was necessary to rest Adams.</p><p>It was a bit confounding as to why the Rockets would sign Capela. While stocking up on depth is never the worst idea, there will never be a scenario where Houston ends up playing Adams and Capela together. With Sengun being the number-one priority at center, it will be Adams and Capela splitting minutes — and was it really worth it to pony up that kind of money to do so?</p><p>With that said, here is the signing the Rockets should have made instead of doubling down on a non-floor spacing, rim-rolling big in Capela.</p><h2><b>Rockets prioritize frontcourt versatility, sign Guerschon Yabusele instead</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Guerschon-Yabusele.jpg"><figcaption>Kyle Ross-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Make no mistake about it, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/houston-rockets/rockets-news-john-hollinger-blasts-houston-no-wings-team-strategy">Capela will be a helpful piece for the Rockets</a>, someone who fits the team’s identity to a T. This past season, the Rockets bludgeoned the opposition on the glass, making up for their lackluster halfcourt offense with their ability to be the most ferocious offensive rebounding team in the league at present.</p><p>There’s a reason why the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/houston-rockets/rockets-news-steven-adams-explanation-massive-game-6-impact-warriors">Rockets thrived in the first round of the 2025 NBA playoffs</a> when they paired Sengun with Adams, taking advantage of the Golden State Warriors’ lack of size and dominating the boards as a result. Adams, in particular, saw a major career revival, as he was back to his monstrous ways on the offensive glass and received a three-year, $39 million contract extension as a result.</p><p>The line of thinking behind the Rockets’ signing of Capela is clear; in having another similar player to Adams, they shield him from the wear and tear that players accrue in the regular season. Moreover, they also have added insurance in the event that he finds himself in foul trouble.</p><p>Adams, as one would recall, missed the entire 2023-24 season due to a major knee injury. And at 31 years of age, he needs more protection from injury than ever. That’s where Capela comes in to function as a reasonable facsimile to the Big Kiwi.</p><p>That explains why the Rockets would go out of their way to make signing another center a priority. But if they truly wanted to reinforce their frontcourt further, why not pursue Guerschon Yabusele instead?</p><p>For an insurance plan in the frontcourt,<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/atlanta-hawks/nba-rumors-the-key-veteran-hawks-expect-to-lose-in-free-agency"> Capela is not very durable himself</a>. He played in just 55 games last season and has dealt with a myriad of injuries, and it’s clear that he’s on the decline. Meanwhile, Yabusele stayed healthy last season and played in 70 games, starting 43 of them.</p><p>Yabusele is not the shot-blocker and rebounder that Capela is. But he can space the floor and guard the perimeter reasonably well, while displaying the ability to line up both at the four and at the five. He’s a rugged defender who gives away not a single inch, making him a perfect fit for the Rockets’ identity of physical play.</p><p>Unlike Capela, Yabusele is a more seamless fit on most Rockets lineups, even those with suboptimal spacing. Amen Thompson and Adams will feature prominently in the rotation, and they’re non-shooters. Yabusele <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/y/yabusgu01.html" rel="noopener">shot 38.0 percent</a> from deep last season on 3.9 attempts per game — the kind of output on offense that the Rockets will need to make things go smoother for them on that end of the floor.</p><p>Perhaps the Rockets were wary of Yabusele and his lack of a consistent track record. But Yabusele has come back stateside as a different player who’s learned a lot during his stint away from the NBA from 2019 to 2024. He’s also two years younger than Capela.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/knicks-news-guerschon-yabusele-76ers-12-million-free-agency-contract">Yabusele ended up signing a two-year deal with the New York Knicks</a> worth around $12 million — an offer the Rockets could have easily matched or even surpassed.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Major frontcourt addition – and return to Houston for Capela,” Charania said.</p><p>The Rockets will <a href="https://x.com/BrettSiegelNBA/status/1939870850506780905" rel="noopener">complete the move via sign-and-trade</a>. They will send a 2031 second-round pick and cash to the Atlanta Hawks to carry out the transaction, per NBA insider Brett Siegel.</p><p>Houston selected Capela with the 25th pick of the 2014 NBA Draft. He represented them for six seasons as he made his way up the rotation until securing the starting job. It’s clear that the Rockets will prioritize depth in the frontcourt in case injuries happen during the regular season.</p><p>And when it comes to playoff experience, Capela has a lot of it. He’s played in eight postseasons, the deepest being his three Conference Finals runs with the Rockets in 2015 and 2018 and Hawks in 2021.</p><p>This will greatly benefit Houston as they will have centers who will rebound the ball at a high rate while being solid rim-protectors. Even though Capela continues to be inconsistent at the free-throw line, he makes up for it with his rebounding and physicality inside the arc.</p><p>The Rockets will continue to progress through the offseason, especially after landing Dorian Finney-Smith from the Los Angeles Lakers. Georges Niang, Caris LeVert, and Terance Mann have a few games under their belts as Hawks players, but the team is still trying to build chemistry with them, especially from the bench unit.</p><p>There have been good things to come out of the new players, and there have also been times when it’s obvious that they haven’t been on the team forever, but there is more room to grow within the unit. Clint Capela, who is now in a bench role after starting for most of the season, is optimistic about <a href="https://www.ajc.com/sports/atlanta-hawks/collective-experience-on-hawks-bench-making-it-easier-to-get-on-same-page/P2NNHZEWIBBKBLOJNUFKVYKXLI/" rel="noopener">what the new unit can do</a>.</p><p>“It’s a big difference because they don’t hesitate to communicate and figure it out, Capela said via Lauren Williams of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “Situations whenever we caught up in something defensively, we able to figure it out quicker,” he said. “And that’s a huge plus for the match.”</p><p>Each one of Niang, LeVert, and Mann have made solid contributions to the Hawks since arriving, and it’s hard not to think things will improve as time goes on. Especially with each of the players having experience in the league and playing at a high level, everyone believes it will work out, including LeVert himself.</p><p>“Yeah, I think that’s the thing that’s kind of bringing us together, is our communication and our experience,” LeVert said. “We’ve all played a lot of basketball. I gotta give my teammates a ton of credit. Without them finding me and kicking the ball out, I wouldn’t be able to get the shots or looks that I get.</p><p>“It’s with sacrifice and giving. If another person sacrifices something so someone else can do their job, then it allows other people to shine. If they are, that only leaves them with plenty of midseason moves to make.</p><p>The Hawks reshuffled the deck by trading away Dejounte Murray and AJ Griffin and drafting Zaccharie Risacher and Nikola Djurisic. It may make them a less talented team for the time being but moving off of a co-star that didn’t fit with Trae Young and restocking their draft assets should allow them to try again. They could keep wheeling and dealing before the season starts to shore up their rotation, too.</p><p>One of the Hawks’s big men is <a href="https://marcstein.substack.com/p/my-nba-trade-talk-and-free-agency?utm_campaign=email-post&amp;r=5mu3w&amp;utm_source=substack&amp;utm_medium=email" rel="noopener">drawing trade interest</a>, according to NBA insider Marc Stein, but it’s neither veteran starter Clint Capela nor youngster Onyeka Okongwu.</p><p>Stein writes the following: “The Hawks have been trying to trade Clint Capela for more than a year, but league sources say that the Atlanta big man drawing the most external interest is newly acquired Larry Nance Jr. Word is Nance, who came to the Hawks in the recent Dejounte Murray trade, is being chased by multiple teams in need of proven size.”</p><p>Nance <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/grading-hawks-pelicans-dejounte-murray-trade">landed in Atlanta in the trade</a> that sent Murray to the New Orleans Pelicans. In 61 games last season, Nance averaged just 5.7 points and 5.0 rebounds in 19.9 minutes per game, though he did shoot 57.3 percent from the field and 41.5 percent from deep on limited volume. His $11 million contract expires after the 2024-25 season.</p><p>A team looking to acquire Nance is surely interested in his playmaking, which is really solid for a big, as well as his shooting efficiency from deep and at the rim. Although he’s losing a step or two as an athlete, he’s talented and by all accounts a good presence in the locker room.</p><h2><b>Hawks looking to rebuild through youthful athleticism around Trae Young</b></h2><p>As it stands now, the Hawks are no more dangerous of a playoff team. The Eastern Conference has far too many teams with multiple stars and deep rotations, so a band of misfits around Young will only amount to a playoff appearance at the very best. Even then, they’re almost certainly going to have to make it through the play-in again.</p><p>But for as much as it’s worth, the Hawks could be a pretty enjoyable team to watch. Even if Risacher is uninspiring as a first-overall pick, he’s <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/hawks-2024-nba-draft-grade-for-zaccharie-risacher">an athletic wing</a> with the potential to be a strong three-point shooter. Dyson Daniels is a really good and smart defender on the wing, too. With Jalen Johnson ready to break out even further, Bogdan Bogdanovic still around and Kobe Bufkin and E.J. Liddell as upside swings, Atlanta is bound to be more interesting this season than last.</p><p>Capela and Okongwu still provide a solid 1-2 punch at center. The former may be on the move at some point, though, unless he and the Hawks can agree on a contract extension. Other names to watch for are Mitchell Robinson of the New York Knicks, Walker Kessler of the Utah Jazz, and Isaiah Stewart of the Detroit Pistons.</p><p>“Hartenstein, at this moment, is now generally expected to return to New York, as the Knicks have contacted opposing teams about moving Mitchell Robinson, sources said. There appears to be a wide range of starting-caliber big men available for trade. League personnel told Yahoo Sports the Bucks are open to reshaping their roster, and they are gauging the trade value for Brook Lopez. Houston, sources said, cautioned Lopez that re-signing with Milwaukee could very well lead to him eventually being traded when the Rockets pursued Lopez in free agency a year ago.</p><p>“Atlanta, sources said, continues to pursue deals for veteran center Clint Capela, who’s entering the final year of a contract that still owes the 30-year-old rim protector $22 million. Rival teams believe Utah is willing to engage in trade talks that would part ways with Jazz second-year center Walker Kessler. He joined ClutchPoints in 2023.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Monday had to be a tough day for Memphis Grizzlies guard Marcus Smart, who was forced to watch his former team, the Boston Celtics, hoist the Larry O’Brien trophy without him after trading him this past offseason in a deal that ultimately landed them former Washington Wizards big man Kristaps Porzingis. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/celtics-news-jaylen-brown-drops-truth-bomb-filling-marcus-smart-void">Smart was a member</a> this season of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/best-donovan-clingan-destinations-2024-nba-draft">a Grizzlies team</a> that dealt with a nearly unprecedented amount of injuries and thus was unable to make much noise in a vaunted Western Conference playoff landscape that figures to only get more and more competitive as time goes on.</p><p>Still, the good news for the Grizzlies is that <a href="https://www.actionnetwork.com/nba/nba-free-agency-rumors-intel-latest-news-after-nba-finals" rel="noopener">they are expected</a> to have star point guard Ja Morant back and healthy for the upcoming 2024-25 season, with Smart and a host of other veterans ready to help lift Memphis back into the spotlight they partly occupied between 2021 and 2023.</p><p>One of the biggest weak points on the Grizzlies’ roster currently is at the center position, as the team traded Steven Adams this year and doesn’t have a ton of depth in that spot on the roster at the present moment. Thus, it figures that the team would look into potentially trading for some reinforcements in that regard this offseason.</p><p>“Clint Capela is a popular trade target with the Grizzlies, Wizards, Pelicans and Bulls having expressed interest,” reported NBA insider Matt Moore of The Action Network.</p><p>Moore also noted that “the Grizzlies are expected to try and add multiple centers this summer, which is one reason they’ve been linked to trade-up rumors in the draft. Another name to watch as a potential reserve option is Day’Ron Sharpe from the Nets with one of their bench wings and a second rounder being part of a potential deal.”</p><h2><b>Can the Grizzlies bounce back?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Morant-and-Smart.jpg"><figcaption>Petre Thomas-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>There were certain points during the 2023-24 season that the Grizzlies’ active roster consisted almost exclusively of players that were not familiar to the average fan due to the sheer volume of injuries that the team had sustained over the course of the year.</p><p>Morant missed the first 25 games of the year due to a suspension and looked ready to take the league by storm upon his return in December, but unfortunately wasn’t able to stay in the lineup for long before suffering a season ending injury, which coincided with several other brutal injuries for Taylor Jenkins and company throughout the year.</p><p>When they’re healthy, the Grizzlies would figure to be a tier below teams like the Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves in the Western Conference pecking order, but that still doesn’t mean that they can’t be a competitive team and perhaps go on a deep playoff run if things break their way. After all, a healthy Morant is still one of the ten to fifteen best players in the league, and Marcus Smart brings a degree of defense and veteran stability to the team that wasn’t there the last time they made the postseason back in 2023.</p><p>In any case, next season is set to get underway in October.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

This seems like a very open-ended question right now, especially since the Hawks have various decisions to make. Not only does Atlanta own the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/2024-nba-mock-draft-3-0-donovan-clingan-to-rockets-amid-trade-rumors">first overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft</a>, which is scheduled for June 26, but they are also expected to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/hawks-news-trae-young-dejounte-murray-talk-relationship-amid-trade-rumors">re-assess their backcourt pairing</a> of Dejounte Murray and Trae Young. Murray was a prominent name who appeared in various rumors ahead of the trade deadline. In addition to Murray and Young, the Hawks are also expected to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-fan-mailbag-hawks-plans-nba-draft-rumors">discuss the futures</a> of De’Andre Hunter and Clint Capela.</p><p>As of right now, the Hawks are eyeing three prospects in the NBA Draft: Alex Sarr, Zaccharie Risacher, and Donovan Clingan. Should the Hawks select Risacher and shock everyone, then Hunter’s name suddenly becomes intriguing in trade talks due to the abundance of wing talent in Atlanta. In regards to Capela, he appears to be on his way out, with Sarr being the likely first overall pick in this year’s draft.</p><p>Regardless of the Hawks’ No. 1 pick, they are expected to make both Hunter and Capela available in trade discussions leading up to and past the NBA Draft, league sources told ClutchPoints. Atlanta is by no means a contending team in the Eastern Conference right now, and change is necessary this offseason. At this moment, the franchise is keeping all of its options open. Figuring out what kind of value Hunter and Capela hold on the trade market during an offseason in which there will be plenty of movement is not a bad idea by any means.</p><p>Every player in the league has a price. Right now, there is no telling what type of value the Hawks could get for players on their roster. Murray appears to be the player who could net the most assets in a trade, but does Atlanta actually want to deal the two-way guard since he was their most productive player this past season? The same can be said about Young, who has been the face of the franchise since he was drafted fifth overall in 2018.</p><p>While other teams in their position may elect to go through a rebuilding process, the Hawks are still of the mindset that they can be a legitimate threat in the Eastern Conference once more. Obviously, that is not the case with the way their roster is currently assembled, which is why general manager Landry Fields and Atlanta’s front office are going to keep an open mind as they navigate through this re-tooling phase.</p><p>With the draft near and the Hawks also keeping the idea of cutting long-term costs in order to maintain a level of flexibility, here are three trades that the organization could consider making this offseason involving Capela and Hunter.</p><h2><b>Brandon Ingram joins the Hawks</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Brandon-Ingram-passing.jpg"><figcaption>Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p><b><i>Atlanta Hawks receive: F Brandon Ingram, G Dyson Daniels, NOP 2028 1st Round Pick (Swap, Least favorable to ATL)</i></b></p><p><i><b>New Orleans Pelicans receive: F De’Andre Hunter, C Clint Capela, SAC 2025 1st Round Pick (via ATL, Top-12 protected), MIN 2025 2nd Round Pick (unprotected), LAC 2027 2nd Round Pick (via ATL, unprotected), ATL 2028 1st Round Pick (Swap, More favorable to NOP) </b></i></p><p>Much like the Hawks, the New Orleans Pelicans are going to be a busy team this offseason. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pistons-poach-trajan-langdon-from-pelicans-to-lead-front-office">Trajan Langdon jumped ship</a> for the Detroit Pistons after being the general manager in New Orleans over the last several seasons, leaving David Griffin as the sole decision-maker in the Pels’ front office. Brandon Ingram is entering the final year of his contract and has missed chunks of time each of the last few seasons due to injury. When he has been healthy, Ingram has generally been productive, but his upside in New Orleans is limited and he really struggled in the playoffs without Zion Williamson.</p><p>If there is any time for the Pelicans to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/best-brandon-ingram-trade-destinations-if-pelicans-break-up-roster">move on from Ingram</a> and revamp their roster around Williamson and CJ McCollum, now would be the opportune time. This is especially true seeing as the organization views Trey Murphy III as a potential All-Star talent on the wing. Murphy is entering the final year of his rookie contract, and it appears much more likely that NOLA will want to pay him over Ingram.</p><p>The market for a player like Ingram, who may not be ready to commit to a long-term contract with unrestricted free agency in 2025 staring him down, is very much unknown at this time. However, it is safe to assume that the Pelicans will be seeking a package similar to what the Toronto Raptors got at the trade deadline from the Indiana Pacers <a href="https://www.nba.com/news/raptors-pacers-pascal-siakam-trade" rel="noopener">for Pascal Siakam</a>, who was on an expiring contract. The Raptors landed Bruce Brown, Kira Lewis Jr., Jordan Nwora, two 2024 first-round picks, and a conditional 2026 first-round pick.</p><p>Although they have shown recent <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-pelicans-dejounte-murray-trade-pursuit-gets-update-as-he-misses-hawks-game-vs-celtics">interest in Dejounte Murray</a> and would likely demand him in a trade for Ingram, perhaps the Hawks could look to sway New Orleans’ mind in a different direction. De’Andre Hunter and Clint Capela would immediately slide into the Pelicans’ starting rotation. Capela could be valuable, with Jonas Valanciunas entering unrestricted free agency and likely to seek offers elsewhere. Already having Herb Jones as one of the best defensive players in the league, New Orleans would now add another versatile two-way forward who is looking for a better role offensively in Hunter.</p><p>The two key questions that present themselves in the trade package outline here are whether the Pelicans would seek more first-round draft compensation and if the Hawks would want to target a former All-Star in the final year of his contract. Bringing in Ingram to pair with Young and Murray, as well as the incoming first overall pick, could certainly stir the pot in the Eastern Conference. Then again, the Hawks would have done nothing to improve their long-term payroll problems. This would be a big risk for Atlanta to take without any long-term commitment from Ingram.</p><h2><b>Mavericks add De’Andre Hunter</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/DeAndre-Hunter-celebrating.jpg"><figcaption>Jesse Johnson-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p><b><i>Atlanta Hawks receive: G Tim Hardaway Jr., G Josh Green, BOS 2024 2nd Round Pick (via DAL, Pick No. 58), TOR 2025 2nd Round Pick (via DAL, unprotected)</i></b></p><p><i><b>Dallas Mavericks receive: F De’Andre Hunter, G/F AJ Griffin </b></i></p><p>The Dallas Mavericks have had a magical season and are currently fighting against the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals. When the offseason begins for the Mavs, they will be operating with a payroll that exceeds $170 million. Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving are set to make over $80 million combined next season, and this team won’t have any ability to add impactful players in free agency. The good news for Dallas is that they have tradeable contracts with Tim Hardaway Jr. ($16.1 million), Maxi Kleber ($11 million), and Dwight Powell ($4 million) that could be leveraged at any point for a player with a similar contract.</p><p>Although they have been a great defensive team throughout the playoffs, the Mavericks are still lacking talent and defensive awareness on the wing. Adding shooting depth and a player like Hunter, who can guard virtually any position, gives the Mavs yet another weapon to utilize next to Doncic and Irving.</p><p>The best part about this trade from Dallas’ perspective is they wouldn’t be sacrificing much in terms of production. Hardaway has fallen out of the rotation in the playoffs, and Josh Green’s athleticism would be replicated by Hunter on the wing. Not to mention, AJ Griffin is a recent first-round pick who presents scoring upside. Due to some injuries he has battled early on in his career, Griffin’s role and future in Atlanta are certainly worth discussing this offseason.</p><p>Compared to other teams around the league, the Mavs may not have much to offer the Hawks in order to make a trade like this worthwhile. Dallas is certainly a team that Hunter could fit in with if Atlanta moves him this offseason, but this seems like a scenario that would likely involve one other team where the Hawks could either re-route Hardaway or gain more draft assets. Two second-round picks and two rotational players for Hunter and Griffin, two players with potential to grow, are not the best.</p><h2><b>Thunder replace Josh Giddey</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Josh-Giddey.jpg"><figcaption>Soobum Im-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p><b><i>Atlanta Hawks receive: G/F Josh Giddey, F Ousmane Dieng, MIA 2025 1st Round Pick (via OKC, Lottery-Protected)</i></b></p><p><b><i>Oklahoma City Thunder receive: F De’Andre Hunter, G/F AJ Griffin</i></b></p><p>What do Sam Presti and the Oklahoma City Thunder have planned this offseason? After claiming the 1-seed in the Western Conference, it has become abundantly clear that the Thunder are no longer rebuilding. This is a team that has numerous future assets that they can offer up in trades during the offseason in order to fill the gaps around Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who has emerged as a legitimate MVP candidate.</p><p>There are questions being asked around the league about who will remain next to Gilgeous-Alexander in the long term. Chet Holmgren is not going anywhere, and the chances of Presti entertaining the idea of moving Jalen Williams are extremely slim. Between Luguentz Dort and Josh Giddey, it would make the most sense for Oklahoma City to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-josh-giddey-trade-buzz-picks-up-disappointing-season-thunder">move on from Giddey</a>. He did not have the most productive season, and the Thunder are exceptionally high on Cason Wallace filling minutes both behind and next to Gilgeous-Alexander.</p><p>As he enters the final year of his rookie deal, now would be the best time for Oklahoma City to move Giddey for a productive wing who can complement Dort’s defensive play. Hunter is a win-now player available on the trade market. At 26 years old, he lines up perfectly with the Thunder’s current timeline since Gilgeous-Alexander is 25 and Williams is 23. The best part about going out and getting Hunter is the upside he brings as a two-way wing who could actually turn into a factor as a rebounder with the right team. Much like how Andrew Wiggins turned into a great two-way player when he went to the Golden State Warriors, we could see similar development with Hunter in Oklahoma City.</p><p>From the Hawks’ perspective, they would be getting Giddey, who could be flipped for more assets, and a young player in Ousmane Dieng. The French forward is 6’10” and has shown flashes of his offensive potential in limited minutes early on in his career. Regardless of the first overall pick, the Hawks would be able to immediately create a lengthy frontcourt with the addition of Dieng next to Onyeka Okongwu and Jalen Johnson.</p><p>Across the board, this is a very fair trade for both teams.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The Rockets are well-coached and have a lot of depth to their roster. But their success ultimately hinges on Alperen Sengun.  </p><p>While it’s clear the Rockets got a steal landing him as the 16th pick in the 2021 NBA draft, it actually took a series of complex trades to get him. And all of it all starts with Clint Capela. </p><h2>How the Rockets turned Clint Capela into Alperen Sengun</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Atlanta-Hawks-center-Clint-Capela-please-crop-to-make-landscape-orientation.jpg"><figcaption>Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>After six seasons with the Rockets, Clint Capela’s tenure with the team came to an end in 2020. He was a pivotal player during their championship window with James Harden. However, once that window closed, the team decided to slowly embrace a full rebuild. </p><p>In a <a href="https://www.nba.com/rockets/news/rockets-complete-four-team-trade" rel="noopener">massive four-team trade</a> before the 2020 trade deadline, the Rockets received Robert Covington and Jordan Bell for Capela. A day later, Bell was traded for Bruno Caboclo who was eventually waived.</p><p>As for Covington, he was shipped to the Portland Trail Blazers the following season. In return, the Rockets acquired Trevor Ariza, a first-round pick (Usman Garuba), and the rights to Isaiah Stewart. Two days later, the team sent both Ariza and Stewart to the Detroit Pistons, along with a future second-round pick, and cash considerations in exchange for Christian Wood, a protected future first-round pick, and a second-round pick in 2021.</p><p>Seeing that Wood wasn’t the franchise center they had hoped for, they traded him to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for multiple role players (who all eventually got waived except for Boban Marjanović) and a first-round pick. Fast forward to the 2021 draft, the Mavs pick and the first-round pick from the Wood deal were used to acquire the 16th pick, making way for them to <a href="https://www.nba.com/news/rockets-acquire-16th-pick-alperen-sengun-in-trade-with-thunder" rel="noopener">acquire Sengun</a>. </p><h2>What is the aftermath of the Capela trade four years later?</h2><p>This series of moves transformed the Rockets’ assets from Capela into a promising future. It landed them Garuba, three future second-round picks, and of course, Alperen Sengun. The Rockets’ trading saga illustrates just how difficult it can be to be an NBA GM.
