According to Shams Charania of ESPN, Houston is <a href="https://x.com/ShamsCharania/status/1896370610974134349" rel="noopener">converting two-way guard</a> Nate Williams to a standard NBA deal worth $8.2 million across four seasons. In order to create space on the roster for Williams, the Rockets are <a href="https://x.com/ShamsCharania/status/1896370912196468872" rel="noopener">reportedly waiving</a> Cody Zeller, per Charania.</p><p>Zeller, 32, has played at the NBA level since the 2013-24 season. He most recently appeared in an NBA game with the New Orleans Pelicans in 2023-24. Although he has been apart of both the Atlanta Hawks and Rockets organizations this season, Zeller has not played in an NBA game this year.</p><p>Williams, 26, was not selected in the 2022 NBA Draft. He would later make his NBA debut with the Portland Trail Blazers that season, but appeared in only five games. He joined the Rockets in 2023-24 and has played in Houston ever since. Williams’ contract was previously a two-way deal, but now he is set to earn a standard contract.</p><p>The Rockets clearly believe in Williams’ potential. He has appeared in eight games so far in 2024-25, averaging 3.6 points per outing. A 6’5″ guard, Williams provides Houston with extra depth. The Rockets have serious postseason aspirations and perhaps Williams can help them make a run.</p><h2><b>Rockets’ 2024-25 NBA season</b></h2><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/houston-rockets/rockets-news-jalen-green-drops-best-anthony-edwards-take-after-epic-duel-in-houston-win">Jalen Green and the Rockets have enjoyed a strong campaign</a>. Sure, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/houston-rockets/houston-rockets-fatal-flaw-fixed-2025-nba-all-star-break">Rockets have some uncertainty</a>. Overall, though, Houston has played a quality brand of basketball.</p><p>The Rockets hold a 37-23 record as of this story’s writing. Houston sits in fifth place in the competitive Western Conference standings as a result. They are only a game and a half behind the second place Denver Nuggets, though. The Rockets certainly have a legitimate opportunity to improve their standings position before the regular season comes to an end.</p><p>Houston’s next game is scheduled for Monday night against the leaders of the Western Conference in the Oklahoma City Thunder.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

That continued with a trade made right before the buzzer sounded, as they shored up their big man rotation by adding veteran center Cody Zeller in a trade with the Atlanta Hawks.</p><p>Houston’s only trade heading into deadline day was a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/celtics-news-jaden-springer-trade-rockets">deal with the Boston Celtics that saw them net Jaden Springer</a> while swapping second-round picks with the C’s. The Rockets will be <a href="https://x.com/ShamsCharania/status/1887586890930688102" rel="noopener">sending out a 2028 second-round pick</a> to the Hawks in exchange for Zeller, allowing them to shore up their bench with another small trade.</p><p>“The Atlanta Hawks are trading Cody Zeller and Houston’s 2028 second-round pick to the Rockets, sources tell ESPN,” Shams Charania reported in a post on X, formerly Twitter.</p><h2><b>Rockets hoping Cody Zeller can find his way into their rotation</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Rockets-center-Cody-Zeller.jpg"><figcaption>Mandatory Credit: Wendell Cruz-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The addition of Zeller is an interesting one for the Rockets, as he hasn’t taken the court at all this season due to personal reasons. Whether or not that will change now that he’s in Houston, or if he will be sticking with the team, remains to be seen, but if he does, he has the potential to emerge as a big man option off the bench for one of the top teams in the Western Conference.</p><p>Zeller previously spent the 2023-24 campaign with the New Orleans Pelicans, but he didn’t make much of an impact, averaging just 1.8 points and 2.6 rebounds while playing just 7.4 minutes per game. Zeller obviously has his limitations, but given the low price tag associated with this deal, any sort of production Houston can get out of him will be a win, and it will be worth keeping tabs on his status in the wake of this trade.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

As they look to build around Williamson, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pelicans-news-herb-jones-free-agency-4-year-54-million-contract/" rel="noopener">Pelicans have brought in</a> a player fresh off a run to the NBA Finals.</p><p>New Orleans <a href="https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1675593113220292610" rel="noopener">has signed</a> former Miami Heat center Cody Zeller, via Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. Zeller is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pelicans-news-new-orleans-makes-under-the-radar-move-amid-zion-williamson-controversy/" rel="noopener">coming to the Pelicans</a> on a one-year, $3.1 million contract.</p><p>The center only appeared in 15 regular season games for Miami this past season. He averaged 6.5 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. Over his 10-year NBA career, Zeller has averaged 8.4 points and 5.9 rebounds per game.</p><p>With Williamson and starting center Jonas Valanciunas leading the charge, New Orleans ranked 13th in total rebounds, grabbing 43.7 boards per game. However, with Jaxon Hayes signing with the Los Angeles Lakers, the Lakers needed a bit more juice on the glass. Zeller should back up Valanciunas and look to help pick up the slack in the rebounding department.</p><p>Cody Zeller will also provide New Orleans with plenty of experience. In the NBA for over 10 years, Zeller understands what it takes to have a long career. Furthermore, fresh off a run to the NBA Finals, he knows what it’s like competing at the highest level.</p><p>Despite going 42-40 last season, the Pelicans were knocked out in the play-in round and didn’t officially make the playoffs. Zeller won’t immediately turn New Orleans into world beaters. It was an intense moment, no doubt, and being the absolute savage that he is, Butler decided to have some fun with it.</p><p>Jimmy Butler had another massive performance in this one, dropping a game-high 28 points on 9-of-21 shooting, to go along with four rebounds, three assists, and two blocks in 36 minutes of action. The heat star made up for his inefficiency from the field by going 10-of-11 from the charity stripe, en route to leading Miami to a huge 105-86 victory in Game 3.</p><p>Game 4 is scheduled for Monday night in Miami, and the Heat have a great opportunity on their hands to take a commanding 3-1 series lead over the Knicks. Randle and Zeller were both grabbing at each other near the end of the third quarter. Things escalated a bit, forcing the officials to intervene. Players from both teams still managed to get involved. The Heat now have a 2-1 lead and home-court advantage. Randle and company were dreadful from the field, shooting 34 percent and 20 percent from 3-point range. A returning Jimmy Butler scored a game-high 28 points but had plenty of help from Bam Adebayo and Max Strus.</p><p>The Knickerbockers will likely still be steamed after this one. Perhaps taking the aggression from the brief scuffle and bringing it to Game 4 will give them the edge they have been lacking much of this series. They have the ability to match the Heat’s physicality, but shots will also need to drop for momentum to dramatically change.</p><p>Regardless, fans from both sides should be pumped up to see this 1990s rivalry fully renewed. In a home tilt against the Dallas Mavericks, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/heat-news-jimmy-butler-embarrasses-luka-doncic-kyrie-irving-with-epic-feat-never-seen-before-in-nba-history" rel="noopener">Jimmy Butler</a> and company managed to pull out a hard-fought 129-122 victory to give themselves their 41 win on the season and, in turn, a chance to potentially bypass the play-in tournament altogether and officially advance to the postseason.</p><p>While the All-Star wing’s 35-point, 12-assist, and 3-rebound performance certainly helped pave the way for the Heat on the night, it was the help of his supporting cast that ultimately proved to be the real difference maker.</p><p>Recently signed big man Cody Zeller proved to be one of Miami’s most effective contributors, as he was inserted into Erik Spoelstra’s starting lineup with star Bam Adebayo sidelined <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/heat-news-is-bam-adebayo-playing-vs-mavs" rel="noopener">with a right hip contusion</a>.</p><p>Following the outing, Jimmy Butler <a href="https://www.nba.com/watch/video/mia-129-dal-122-jimmy-butlers-postgame-media-availability?plsrc=nba&amp;game-highlights=0022201161" rel="noopener">praised the ninth-year veteran</a> for the impact that he had on the team against the Mavs and, specifically, how easy it is to “work with a player” like him.</p><p>“My job is really easy. He sets screens, he rolls hard as I don’t know what, and you reward your big for that. And then if I’m not open, he’s not open, that means somebody’s in the paint or our shooters are open. That’s just the way the game is played. Considering the severity of his broken nose, the veteran big man is lucky Andre Iguodala’s elbow didn’t do even more damage.</p><p>Chauncey Billups announced on Wednesday that Zeller is set for surgery to repair the broken nose he suffered in <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/3-positives-from-trail-blazers-blowout-loss-to-warriors-in-preseason-opener/">Portland’s preseason opener</a> against the Golden State Warriors. Whenever someone posterizes the reigning back-to-back MVP like Zeller just did, he automatically deserves to win the award outright</p><p>Kidding aside, this is just what happens when a player like Antetokounmpo doesn’t shy away from contact and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bucks-video-giannis-antetokounmpo-not-playing-around-gets-the-block-on-lakers-lebron-james-fade-away/">takes the challenge</a> of contesting dunks at the rim. Unfortunately for the 26-year old superstar, he will certainly see this for the rest of the night should he check SportsCenter later on.</p><p>Zeller and the Hornets also got the last laugh. He played a pretty solid game to help the Hornets get a 126-114 upset victory over the Bucks. That ferocious finish over the MVP was just two of his seven points on the evening. Nonetheless, he did grab 15 rebounds and dish out seven assists in 34 minutes.</p><p>Zeller’s dunk also must have energized the Hornets down the stretch as they closed the game on a 16-4 run after the highlight play.</p><p>As for Antetokounmpo, his 34-point, 18-rebound effort was not enough to give Milwaukee the away win. They have been slowly building around a young core and the addition of their <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lamelo-ball-selected-by-hornets-with-no-3-pick-in-2020-nba-draft/" rel="noopener noreferrer">second overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft</a> in LaMelo Ball only goes to show that Mitch Kupchak and Michael Jordan are keen on developing a team for the future.</p><p>Ball, 19, is coming into the league as one of the youngest athletes.</p><p>Starting center Cody Zeller, one of the “veterans” in the team, has only been in the league for seven years at the age of 27–which is around the average age of the players in the NBA currently. With that said, Zeller took to <a href="https://twitter.com/CodyZeller/status/1333088476938596359">Twitter</a> to poke some fun at how young his team is.</p><blockquote>“I just heard a few of my new teammates say they were born in 2001! Shouldn’t they be about 12 years old if they’re born in 2001? I had to double check that I didn’t accidentally sign up for the 6th grade basketball team!” Zeller comically posted.</blockquote><p>Jokes aside, the Hornets have built quite the young roster for the upcoming season. Alongside LaMelo Ball, the Hornets also drafted another youngster in Vernon Carney Jr., who’s just six months older than the Chino Hills native. These two 19-year-olds are coming into a Charlotte unit that are already filled with players in their early 20s.</p><p>Two members of their starting unit from last season are just 22 years of age–PJ Washington and Miles Bridges. Other members in the roster who could potentially be in the starting lineup are Terry Rozier (26) and Devonte’ Graham (25). The Hornets did acquire a vet in Gordon Hayward who, at age 30, is already the oldest among the bunch.</p><p>Hopefully for Charlotte, their youthful vets in Hayward and Zeller could provide some much-needed experience to help their young core develop into a legitimate threat in the East.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
