He joined ClutchPoints in 2023.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Los Angeles Lakers</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/los-angeles-lakers/eurobasket-news-luka-doncic-2025-26-mvp-candidate"> Los Angeles Lakers have made</a> some major changes this offseason, including bringing in Marcus Smart to give themselves some backcourt depth and point of attack defense. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/los-angeles-lakers/lakers-news-luka-doncic-reveals-marcus-smart-help-defensive-transformation">Smart takes over</a> for D’Angelo Russell, who was traded back to the Brooklyn Nets last season, ending his second tenure with Los Angeles.</p><p>During his first stint with the Lakers, Russell got to play alongside the late Kobe Bryant during his final season in the NBA, and recently, the point guard took to his own Backyard Podcast W/D’Angelo Russell and shared <a href="https://www.hoopshype.com/story/sports/nba/rumors/2025/09/03/dangelo-russell-on-kobe-bryant-so-once-i-seen/85951383007/" rel="noopener">some sage advice</a> that the Lakers legend gave him, per Hoopshype.</p><p>“So once I seen Kobe’s confidence and how he struggled when I was there, he wasn’t shooting the ball good. He struggled,” said Russell. “And I remember going up to him as a 18-year-old rookie and I was just like, ‘Keep shooting. Keep shooting. You’ll be all right…’ He looked at me, he was like, ‘You think I’m worried about these shots?’ He’s like, ‘I got more shots that I’ve missed, more shots that I’ve made like that I could ever even imagine. So, I don’t care if I go three for 20 or 5 for 15 or whatever.’ He didn’t care about that. His confidence stayed at this level. And I took a lot from that, honestly.”</p><p>Lakers fans may feel that Russell might have taken too much wisdom from Bryant, as Russell displayed a propensity to shoot Los Angeles out of games with poor shot selection on nights when he didn’t have it going.</p><p>Russell has since signed with the Dallas Mavericks.</p><h2>Did the Lakers upgrade?</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Marcus-Smart-36-shoots-for-three-over-Miami-Heat-guard-Isaiah-Stevens-4.jpg"><figcaption>© Petre Thomas-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Marcus Smart certainly doesn’t provide the microwave scoring that Russell did, but he does provide a significant upgrade on defense, which is a much bigger area of concern for Los Angeles with Austin Reaves and Luka Doncic in their backcourt.</p><p>Injuries have been an issue for Smart over the last couple of seasons since leaving the Boston Celtics, but if he can give Los Angeles 60 plus games of elite defense and occasional shotmaking, it could be well worth the minimal investment.</p><p>Los Angeles’ first game is scheduled for October 21 at home against the Golden State Warriors.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Irving’s presence will obviously be missed on the floor. For as much criticism as general manager Nico Harrison has received since February, however, he did a respectable job of filling the void by <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/mavericks-news-dangelo-russell-kyrie-irvings-replacement-13-million-contract">signing D’Angelo Russell</a>. In fact, the Russell signing may save the Mavs.</p><p>Anthony Davis is the best player on the team. 2025 No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg features the ceiling of a superstar. Klay Thompson is an established veteran presence who can find the bottom of the net from deep. Dereck Lively II and Daniel Gafford offer strong presences in the paint.</p><p>However, without Irving, the Mavs’ overall play-making is questionable. The Russell addition, though, addresses that concern.</p><h2><b>What D’Angelo Russell brings to the Mavericks</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Mavericks-guard-DAngelo-Russell.jpg"><figcaption>Jerome Miron-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Russell isn’t necessarily known as an elite play-making guard. The former All-Star is regarded as a player who can score at a respectable level from the point guard position. For his career, Russell has averaged 17.3 points per game while shooting 42.7 percent from the field and 36.5 percent from beyond the arc. Even in what would be considered a down season for the guard, Russell still averaged 12.6 points per outing across 58 total games played for the Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets during the 2024-25 campaign.</p><p>Looking beyond his scoring, Russell brings underrated play-making prowess to the Mavericks. He knows what it takes to set up an offense. The 29-year-old point guard has averaged 5.7 assists compared to just 2.6 turnovers per game for his career. In 2024-25, Russell recorded 5.1 assists and 1.9 turnovers per contest.</p><p>He holds overall career marks of a 30.9 assist percentage and a 16.2 PER (player efficiency rating). Russell impacts the game in multiple ways and the Mavericks will benefit as a result.</p><p>Dante Exum will help matters. Cooper Flagg is regarded as a quality play-maker as well. However, Dallas needed a veteran starting-caliber point guard amid Irving’s absence. Russell — in a lot of ways — is almost the perfect fit. And once Irving returns, Russell will instantly become one of the best backup guards in the NBA.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

I always approached the game to where I was just kind of nonchalant, and I felt like I could just wing it.”</p><p>During his time with the Nets, things were drastically different, which Russell says prolonged his career.</p><p>“When I got to Brooklyn, it taught me how to be a professional, how to sleep, how to eat, how to recover, and that’s why I’m still playing to this day, honestly,” Russell added. “I’m not a guy that’s athletic. I’m a guy that had to take care of my body. I had to recover. I had to eat the best way. I couldn’t just show up, and that’s what Brooklyn really taught me. And I’ve been enjoying it ever since.”</p><p>In his first season with the Nets, Russell made his first and only All-Star appearance in 2019. He averaged 21.1 points on 43.4% shooting, 7.0 assists, and 1.2 steals per game. After the Mavericks, who were reportedly interested in Paul, inked D’Angelo to a new deal, Chris eventually agreed to a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Clippers.</p><p>This led to some speculation as to whether the Mavericks <a href="https://marcstein.substack.com/p/monday-best-the-latest-hottest-and" rel="noopener">chose</a> Russell over Paul, which was highlighted recently, per NBA insider Marc Stein.</p><p>“One source with knowledge of the Mavericks’ thinking, for the record, insists that Dallas had D’Angelo Russell higher on its free agent wish list than Paul, for two reasons,” Stein reported. “There is a belief in Dallas that Russell, in addition to leading the Mavericks’ efforts to cope without the injured Kyrie Irving, will find it easier to carve out a supplementary role when Irving is back playing after rehabbing from his ACL tear.</p><p>“Dallas is also said to see him as a better fit alongside star big man Anthony Davis after Davis and Russell just played together with the Lakers,” Stein concluded.</p><p>Stein has been following the story since late June, suggestting Russell was the preferred option for the Mavericks, considering Paul was reportedly disinterested in spending another season in Texas after his stint with the San Antonio Spurs.</p><p>“Widely regarded as a strong favorite to come to terms with another former All-Star — Brooklyn’s D’Angelo Russell — once free agency officially beings Monday night … essentially because the Mavericks regard Russell as far more attainable.
