No disrespect to Ed Davis or Robin Lopez, but Jones is a younger, more athletic body that can soak up minutes as the backup to either Allen or Mobley. Fast forward to now and Tristan Thompson, someone in a similar position as Davis or Lopez, is rounding out the Cavs’ big-man rotation.</p><p>Wait, what? What happened? Jones made almost too much sense on paper for the Cavs. So, is he hurt? No, he isn’t. Instead, after a handful of games, it became pretty clear that the idea of Jones is a better fit for Cleveland compared to the Jones the Cavs are getting every night.</p><h2><b>Damian Jones a bad fit for Cavs?</b></h2><p>What has held Damian Jones back with the Cavs has been an issue in his various stops with the Jazz, Los Angeles Lakers,  Sacramento Kings,  Phoenix Suns, Atlanta Hawks and Golden State Warriors. While Jones is physically imposing and has the size and athleticism to handle the rigors of a backup center, he’s never been able to put it all together. By that, Jones has never found a defined skill that should guarantee him minutes in an NBA rotation to complement his physical gifts.</p><p>Sure, there are moments where you can see Jones make an impact on the floor and he might finally turn the corner. But those moments are outweighed by a lack of attention on defense, getting outrebounded by an opponent or making careless fouls to compensate for the lack of defense or rebounding presence. With Thompson, meanwhile, the Cavs are getting proper backup center minutes. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cavs-news-tristan-thompson-return-sparks-no-shortage-of-reaction" rel="noopener">Thompson is hitting opponents</a> with physicality, showcasing that his knack for offensive rebounds is as potent as ever.</p><p>It’s led to Thompson <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/t/thomptr01.html" rel="noopener">averaging 3.5 points</a>, 3.3 rebounds and 0.5 blocks in about 10 minutes per game, an upgrade over Jones’s averages of 1.8 points and 1.8 rebounds in roughly the same amount of time on the court. What Thompson gives Cleveland is exactly what they need from their backup big man. Allen and Mobley will soak up most of the minutes, but there will be times when either player needs a breather and the Cavs need someone reliable to hold down the fort.</p><p>Considering that Jones is in his ninth NBA season, it’s fair to assume that he won’t find consistency and that Cleveland set roughly $2.6 million on fire. There could be chances for Jones to get minutes with the Cavs if Tristan Thompson ever shows the cracks from age and all the mileage on his body. But, what Thompson is giving Cleveland right now is something Jones can’t replicate so the juice may not be worth the squeeze for the Cavs.</p><p>If anything, Damian Jones could be a little extra salary to fill in the cracks of a trade leading up to the deadline. Either way, Cleveland’s quest to find a proper backup to their superstar frontcourt continues with the Jones trade looking like a bust.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

After doing a <a href="https://cavsnation.com/nba-rumors-heat-speak-with-cavs-about-max-strus-sign-and-trade" rel="noopener">sign-and-trade for Max Strus</a> in the first day and <a href="https://cavsnation.com/cavs-add-sharpshooter-in-nba-free-agency" rel="noopener">signing Georges Niang</a> to a deal, they went into Day 2 determined to add more roster depth. And that’s exactly what they did with the additions of both Damian Jones and guard Ty Jerome.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jazz-news-utah-trades-damian-jones-to-cavs" rel="noopener">Cleveland first traded</a> with the Utah Jazz for Jones, though they didn’t have to give up any assets in the process. Utah was looking to dump Jones’ nearly $2.6 million salary to get a little more flexibility, and the Cavs were more than willing to absorb that money.</p><p>Next up, they signed Jerome to a <a href="https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1675264709300199424" rel="noopener">two-year, $5 million deal</a>, per Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. The 25-year-old guard played for the Golden State Warriors in 2022-23 on a two-way contract. In the 45 games he played for the Dubs, he averaged 6.9 points, 1.7 rebounds and 3.0 assists.</p><p>Jerome is expected to add some much-needed depth at the guard spot for the Cavs, behind Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland.</p><p>The Cavs’ roster is certainly shaping up nicely just two days into free agency. Max Strus gives them a much-needed starting quality wing player to put alongside Mitchell, Garland, Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley. With Georges Niang, they also got a solid sharpshooter who can provide instant offense off the bench.</p><p>Damian Jones and Ty Jerome should also provide them with more stability when their starters rest. Along with all those additions, they still got the <a href="https://cavsnation.com/cavs-news-cleveland-inks-caris-levert-to-2-year-32-million-deal" rel="noopener">likes of Caris LeVert</a> and Isaac Okoro who are capable of starting or coming off the bench.</p><p>It remains to be seen what else the Cavs will do  in free agency, but they are surely off to a great start.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

That means the Jazz are not getting any assets in return.</p><p>“The Jazz are trading center Damian Jones to the Cavaliers, sources tell ESPN. The Cavaliers are simply absorbing Jones’ $2.6 million,” Woj wrote.</p><p>It’s not surprising that the Jazz dealt away Damian Jones since they already have a loaded frontcourt featuring Lauri Markkanen, Walker Kessler and the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/grading-hawks-jazz-trade-involving-john-collins" rel="noopener">recently acquired John Collins</a> from the Atlanta Hawks. By dumping Jones’ salary, Utah got a little bit more cap space that it can use while <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-bucks-linked-jazz-collin-sexton-after-john-collins-trade-hawks" rel="noopener">exploring potential deals</a> or trades this free agency.</p><p>As for the Cavs, Jones is expected to be a solid backup behind Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley. While the 28-year-old hasn’t stuck for long with teams ever since his three-year stint with the Golden State Warriors, he still has tremendous experience when it comes to playing in the postseason and the playoffs.</p><p>Jones actually won two NBA championships with the Warriors back in 2017 and 2018. Interestingly, both of those title wins came against the Cavs when LeBron James was still with the Wine and Gold.</p><p>The former Vanderbilt standout has career averages of 5.2 points and 3.4 rebounds on 66.2 percent shooting. Ham mentioned that he has confidence in Jones’ shooting ability and joked that if he had Robin Lopez shooting three-point shots, he would be able to get Jones to shoot from distance as well.</p><p>Ham was an assistant coach with the Milwaukee Bucks for the past four years and Lopez had a brief stint in Milwaukee during the 2019-2020 season. During that season, Lopez took a career-high 1.6 attempts from three-point range while shooting 33.3 percent. That season remains the most three-point attempts he’s taken to date.</p><p>In Jones’ case, he’s never had a season where he took more than 0.5 attempts from three-point range and that was last season with the Sacramento Kings. He took 29 three-point attempts last year and knocked down ten of them. Jones has never been a good three-point shooter so Ham certainly has his work cut out for him.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-news-la-gives-damian-jones-2-year-deal-in-first-move-of-free-agency/">Damian Jones has largely been</a> an effective rim-running big man who did the majority of his damage in the paint. He has a career shooting average of 66.5 percent and 69.0 percent on two-point shots.</p><p>He’ll need to improve that three-point shot to be even more effective for the Los Angeles Lakers this season.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The second year is a player option, <a href="https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1542633408546971649?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1542633408546971649%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.silverscreenandroll.com%2F2022%2F6%2F30%2F23190540%2Flakers-damian-jones-nba-free-agency-contract-offseason-rumors">according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski</a> (per Jones’ agent).</p><p>The deal is on the veteran’s minimum, <a href="https://twitter.com/michaelcorvoNBA/status/1542641604850135040">per ESPN’s Dave McMenamin</a>.</p><p>Jones, a 6’11, 27-year-old center, played eight games for the Lakers late in the 2020-21 season while on a 10-day contract. Over those few weeks, he proved to be an effective rim-runner and athletic defensive presence. In fact, he <a href="https://twitter.com/michaelcorvoNBA/status/1542634500298907648">shot 16-of-17 from the field</a> and averaged 2.3 blocks per 36 minutes in purple-and-gold.</p><p>Jones was productive over the course of 56 contests (18.2 minutes per game) for the Sacramento Kings in 2021-22. He averaged 16.1 points, 8.7 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per-36 while shooting 65.8% from the field and 71.8% from the free-throw line.</p><p>The Lakers wanted to get younger, more athletic, and longer in the frontcourt and improve their rebounding and rim protection. They also want players behind Anthony Davis (and LeBron James) who can be available every game.
