After winning a championship in 2021, the Bucks have struggled to prove that they are real threats in the Eastern Conference, winning just one playoff series over the last four seasons.</p><p>It is clear Giannis wants to win, which is why a lot of pressure has been thrown on GM Jon Horst and Milwaukee’s front office. At the same time, Antetokounmpo doesn’t necessarily want to leave the franchise he’s spent his entire career with and that has helped him become the legend he is today.</p><p>That is why his <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/milwaukee-bucks/bucks-rumors-shams-doubles-down-giannis-antetokounmpo-future-speculation">future remains a major unknown</a> this offseason and entering the 2025-26 NBA season. All other 29 teams around the league continue to watch this situation brewing in Milwaukee, as further clarity on Giannis’ situation will present itself once he returns from Greece and the <a href="https://x.com/EuroBasket/status/1958228112749068716" rel="noopener">EuroBasket tournament</a> overseas.</p><p>This offseason, the Bucks have been doing everything possible to try and not only improve their roster from a season ago but also prove to their superstar that they will be aggressive when it comes to making moves to better the franchise’s chances of winning another title.</p><p>Key contributors like Bobby Portis, Gary Trent Jr., Kevin Porter Jr., and Taurean Prince all signed new deals with the team. Gary Harris came from the Orlando Magic to Milwaukee in free agency on a minimum deal, and the Bucks also signed Cole Anthony after he was traded from the Magic to the Memphis Grizzlies and eventually reached a buyout.</p><p>The big splash the Bucks made in free agency was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/milwaukee-bucks/bucks-news-myles-turner-poaches-pacers-107-million-milwaukee-free-agency">signing Myles Turner from under the Indiana Pacers</a> to a four-year, $108.8 million contract. Of course, this massive move to sign Turner came at a cost.</p><p>Brook Lopez, who had been with the Bucks since 2018 and was a key member of the 2021 championship team, left for the Los Angeles Clippers, and Pat Connaughton was traded in a salary dump move.</p><p>However, the jaw-dropping departure from Milwaukee this offseason was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/milwaukee-bucks/bucks-news-gm-explains-why-myles-turner-is-worth-damian-lillard-dead-money">Damian Lillard being waived</a> and the team taking on his $112.5 million contract as dead money over the next five years.</p><p>This decision to waive Lillard shocked many around the league, and it is directly tied to Giannis’ future with the Bucks.</p><h2><b>Why Bucks pivoted from Damian Lillard to Myles Turner</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Myles-Turner-vs.-Giannis-Antetokounmpo.jpg"><figcaption>Jeff Hanisch-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>When opportunity comes in the NBA, you need to take it as a front office. That is what Horst and the Bucks did this offseason when they came to a decision to cut Lillard.</p><p>This clearly wasn’t an easy decision to make.</p><p>It is never in an organization’s best interest to waive a star player, especially after suffering a major injury like Lillard did in the playoffs with his torn Achilles. Then again, Lillard was at peace with the idea of becoming a free agent.</p><p>Not only would he be paid in full from the Bucks over the next five seasons, but he would also be able to choose where to sign for the first time in his career as an unrestricted free agent. Ultimately, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/portland-trail-blazers/blazers-news-damian-lillard-admits-mistake-after-portland-departure">Dame chose a return to Portland</a> to be next to family and friends at the end of his career.</p><p>From the Bucks’ standpoint, there wasn’t much else they could do this offseason to try and improve their roster without letting go of Lillard, who will miss all of the 2025-26 season anyway.</p><p>While this decision drastically impacts the Bucks’ financial flexibility for years to come, it allowed the franchise to dip below the tax aprons and open the door to make impactful additions around Giannis right now. That resulted in the ability to sign Turner with no questions asked.</p><p>Turner has spent all 10 years of his career with the Pacers and was the outspoken leader of their NBA Finals team this past season. His numbers speak for themselves, as he’s consistently been one of the league’s premier rim protectors and 3-point shooting big men.</p><p>Although he is an upgrade over Lopez, who is nearing the end of his career, how much better does Turner really make the Bucks? Is this a seismic enough change to turn around the Bucks’ recent misfortunes?</p><p>That is still the question at large, which is why Giannis’ future is very much a key talking point in league circles.</p><h2><b>Will Giannis Antetokounmpo remain with Bucks long-term?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Giannis-Antetokounmpo-with-his-back-to-camera.jpg"><figcaption>Trevor Ruszkowski-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Right now, the Bucks figure to be a team that will contend for a top-four spot in the Eastern Conference during the 2025-26 season.</p><p>With the Boston Celtics and Indiana Pacers taking a step back as a result of Jayson Tatum and Tyrese Haliburton suffering Achilles injuries, the East is wide open. Antetokounmpo has single-handedly carried the Bucks before, and he can do it again as long as he remains healthy.</p><p>When evaluating the Bucks’ roster on paper, they definitely have more depth and durability than many tend to give them credit for. The vast majority of this roster is in their mid-20s, and the team’s veterans are in the primes of their respective careers.</p><p>But as a whole, Milwaukee’s roster still seems somewhat incomplete. The greatest concern surrounds their offensive viability outside of Antetokounmpo and Turner.</p><p>Kyle Kuzma struggled in the limited time he spent with the Bucks last season, and Portis has never been known to be a go-to scoring option.</p><p>Maybe someone new will step up and ease some of the team’s glaring weaknesses, but what Giannis and everyone else around the NBA are evaluating is this team’s championship potential.</p><p>It is hard to imagine this team could defeat either the Cleveland Cavaliers or the New York Knicks, two teams that are <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/2025-nba-power-rankings-offseason-grades-all-30-teams">expected to reign supreme at the top of the East</a>, in a playoff series.</p><p>One could also make the argument that, when fully healthy, the Orlando Magic, Detroit Pistons, and Atlanta Hawks may have surpassed the Bucks as well.</p><p>Until they take the court and play, we can’t prematurely judge Giannis and the Bucks entering the 2025-26 season. However, the clock is ticking for Antetokounmpo to make an enormous decision.</p><p>Should Giannis stay with the Bucks, or is requesting a trade to a team set up in a better situation to win titles the better route?</p><p>To this point, there hasn’t been any talk about a new extension for Giannis in Milwaukee, as he is just now starting a three-year, $175 million deal he signed in 2023. No matter who you talk to around the league, there is still a lot of mystery surrounding whether he will see this contract through with the Bucks.</p><p>Still, nobody knows what Giannis is actually thinking. Unlike most stars, Antetokounmpo keeps everything close in his inner circle and doesn’t put his personal business out there for gossip.</p><p>When he is ready to make a decision, he will do so with what makes the most sense for the remainder of his career and NBA legacy.</p><p>Giannis is not the type of player to constantly jump ship and go from team to team in search of titles, but he is solely focused on winning another championship. If that can’t happen in Milwaukee, he will leave.</p><p>So, has replacing Lillard with Turner doomed the Bucks’ future with the two-time MVP? Well, for one thing, waiving and stretching Lillard’s contract really limits the organization’s ability to maximize its roster over the next several years. This definitely factors into Giannis’ thinking.</p><p>Although it seems like Giannis is giving the Bucks the benefit of the doubt before the start of the 2025-26 season and will see how things play out, anything can change at any time. Following a buyout from the Milwaukee Bucks, Lillard made the decision to return to the only franchise he had ever known prior to the 2023 trade. Lillard is expected to sit out this upcoming season as he rehabs from an Achilles injury suffered during the playoffs. But in the meantime, Damian Lillard will be working at his new job he landed at Weber State.</p><p>With the explosion of the transfer portal and NIL, several college basketball programs are hiring <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/shaquille-oneal-joining-former-nba-rival-as-gm-of-college-basketball-team">former and current NBA players as general managers</a> of sorts to help the program. Damian Lillard was recently <a href="https://x.com/ESPNNBA/status/1951826116047405256" rel="noopener">announced as the general manager</a> of Weber State’s basketball program, as per ESPN.</p><p>“A legacy continues in Ogden. Wildcat legend Damian Lillard is officially joining Weber State Men’s Basketball as the new General Manager,” the team said on a social media post. “Dame is stepping into a leadership role that will help shape the future of Wildcat hoops. A new era begins now.”</p><p>Lillard played all four seasons of his college basketball eligibility at Weber State, a rarity in today’s one-and-done era. He was selected with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft. Lillard played the first 11 seasons of his career with the Blazers before being traded to the Bucks ahead of the 2023-24 season.</p><p>Lillard will step into the role as general manager for a Wildcats team that has not reached the NCAA Tournament since the 2015-16 season. Longtime head coach Randy Rahe retired following the 2021-22 season and was succeeded by his longtime assistant coach Eric Duft. Interpreter Chris Liu has helped Yang transition to the United States and deal with the immense media responsibilities with both Chinese and American media members.</p><p>Yang made four appearances in NBA Summer League, averaging 10.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 2.3 blocks per game on 45.7 percent shooting from the field.</p><p>His best game came against Derick Queen and the New Orleans Pelicans, where he put up 15 points, three rebounds, two assists, one steal, two blocked shots, and three 3-pointers in a Blazers win.</p><p>After Lillard agreed to a deal with the Trail Blazers, Yang was asked about the former Portland superstar guard returning to the team he played his first 11 seasons with.</p><p>“Damian, I mean, he’s a really good player,” Yang said, with interpreter Chris Liu by his side. “I always use them in the 2K game, and I just wish that Damian will rehabilitate himself soon. In his introductory press conference, Lillard explained his new role with the franchise as he recovers from a torn Achilles tendon.</p><p>“I told him that this year, he’s going to be the highest paid assistant coach in league history because I’m going to be putting him to work every day,” Chauncey Billups said of Lillard’s new role. “We’re really excited. We’re really happy to have our guy back.”</p><p>“Like Chauncey said, I’m going to be an assistant coach, but my investment in the team will be the same,” Lillard explained.</p><p>After making big strides in the back half of the 2024-25 season, the Blazers are entering a big season. When <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/milwaukee-bucks/bucks-news-milwaukee-ditches-damian-lillards-113-million-contract-make-room-myles-turner">Milwaukee revealed that they waived and stretched Damian Lillard to do so</a>, the shock increased. With the freedom to pick his next destination, the All-Star point guard decided to head back to the Portland Trail Blazers. His decision has Dwyane Wade wondering about his legacy.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/portland-trail-blazers/blazers-news-nba-watching-world-reacts-damian-lillard-portland-return">Portland’s fanbase embraced Lillard when he returned</a>. He is one of the best players in Trail Blazers history, leading the team in scoring and 3-pointers made all-time. However, there are some experts who wonder why Lillard decided to give up competing for a title. Portland is home for him, but the team is far from being contenders in the Western Conference.</p><p>Despite the discourse surrounding his decision, Wade has nothing but respect for Lillard. The two guards clashed many times throughout their careers. Wade is one of many that think highly of Lillard, despite the fact that he has never won a title. While Wade likes the point guard, he said on <i>The Timeout</i> that he <a href="https://youtu.be/lszBmB3Yxy4?t=344" rel="noopener">can’t be one of the game’s best</a> without a championship.</p><p>“Dame’s legacy in the NBA will be way bigger than a championship,” Wade said. “I think every player that comes through this league’s legacy is not just built on a winning a championship. And we’ve got to stop doing that. Yes, if you’re one of the greatest, if you want to be on that Top 75. You want to be up there with the GOATS, yes, championships are a part of this game. But that doesn’t mean that every player that comes through that is great at this game has to wlak away with a championship for their legacy to be stamped. So Dame to me is one of those players that if he doesn’t sniff a championship it doesn’t change the fact that Dame is a bad mother f—er.”</p><p>Lillard had a tough time adjusting with the Bucks. Now that he is back in Portland, players around the league are happy to see the veteran back in a comfortable situation. The star guard’s tenure with the Bucks came to an end after only two seasons, and it happened after tearing his Achilles during the first round of the playoffs against the Indiana Pacers.</p><p>With the Bucks looking to find a way to improve their team for next season, and Lillard possibly being unavailable for most of that season, they had to make the decision to part ways with him. There were several teams that wanted to sign him, but in the end, he decided to come back home.</p><p>When he told his daughter that he was returning, she <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xa0mnu79oKg" rel="noopener">had a hilarious response</a>.</p><p>“I didn’t say nothing to ’em about it until Saturday when I actually signed,” Lillard said. “They were with me, and we got back in the car to go home, and I got to a red light and I just turned around and my daughter was looking at me and I told her. She was like, ‘Wait, so we don’t have to get on the airplane to Milwaukee no more?’”</p><p>It seems like everyone – from friends, family, and fans – is happy to have Lillard back.</p><h2><b>Damian Lillard returns to the Blazers</b></h2><p>For Lillard, it made <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/portland-trail-blazers/trail-blazers-news-damian-lillard-shares-take-about-decision-come-back">perfect sense to return to the Blazers</a>, and it seems like he didn’t have to think about the decision.</p><p>“Usually when I have to make a decision, I put a lot of thought into it, I ask questions to a lot of people around me, but this was a decision that wasn’t hard at all for me to make,” Lillard said. “I’m just thankful to be back, and it just feels like the perfect situation at the perfect time.”</p><p>Lillard was with the Blazers for 11 seasons before getting traded to the Bucks, and he averaged 25.2 points and 6.7 assists with the team. He helped the Blazers get to the postseason and also had some of his best moments with the franchise, including two buzzer-beater 3-pointers to advance to the next round of the playoffs.</p><p>When Lillard returns from injury, it looks like he’ll be playing with a relatively young roster, but the Blazers are making strides to become a team that will be good for years to come. His voice will matter more than what he can contribute to the floor in his first season back with the Blazers, as the 35-year-old guard is expected to miss a big portion — if not all — of the 2025-26 campaign due to a devastating lower-body injury he suffered in the 2025 NBA Playoffs with the Bucks.</p><p>Lillard sustained the injury during Bucks’ first-round meeting with Tyrese Haliburton and the Indiana Pacers. The initial fear at the time of his injury was that it was an Achilles tear, which was later confirmed.</p><p>Despite learning the severity of his injury, Damian Lillard kept his emotions in check and did not shed a tear, according to Bill Oram of The Oregonian. Milwaukee’s physical therapist <a href="https://www.oregonlive.com/sports/2025/07/why-damian-lillards-push-to-return-to-all-star-form-is-the-only-way-he-knows-bill-oram.html" rel="noopener">was close to tearing up</a>, but the nine-time NBA All-Star seemingly skipped the phase where he’s supposed to feel miserable, as his mind drifted to somewhere else.</p><p>“It wasn’t like a prideful thing, I just, my mind automatically went to, like, I’ve got to fight for something,” Lillard shared. “I know it’s going to be a long journey, I know it’s a challenge mentally. And I kind of shifted right there to what I knew was coming and then it was just kind of learning more about it.”</p><p>The Blazers traded Lillard to Milwaukee in a three-team swap involving the Phoenix Suns in 2023. Lillard landed in a suitable situation in terms of his pursuit of an NBA championship, but he and Giannis Antetokounmpo ultimately didn’t lead the Bucks to an NBA title during his stint in Cream City. In two seasons in Bucks threads, Lillard averaged 24.6 points on a 43.4 percent shooting from the floor, 7.0 assists and 4.5 rebounds through 131 total games.</p><p>With the Trail Blazers again, Damian Lillard <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/portland-trail-blazers/blazers-news-nba-watching-world-reacts-damian-lillard-portland-return">finds himself surrounded by a blend of youth and experience</a>.
