D-Lee just dunked. What’s happening?” Lee said to Duane Rankin of the Arizona Republic. </p><p>The Suns missed Lee on the floor for a tumultuous 2023-24 season. The sharpshooting guard <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/l/leeda03.html" rel="noopener">shot a career-high 44.5% from beyond</a> and was a pivotal piece. He consistently spaced the floor, which was especially helpful when the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nets-news-kevin-durant-traded-by-brooklyn-to-suns">Suns traded for Kevin Durant</a> halfway through that season.</p><p>Even though Lee missed all of last season, his presence was still felt. He consistently cheered on his teammates, offered input on plays, and encouraged players when they were down. After <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/suns-news-frank-vogel-fired-disappointing-playoff-exit-vs-timberwolves">the Suns fired Frank Vogel</a>, they hired Mike Budenholzer. He implements a system that encourages spacing and ball movement. Both of which are in Lee’s repertoire.</p><h2><b>How can Damion Lee help the Suns once he’s healthy?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Damion-Lee-gives-update-about-his-injury-with-the-Suns.jpg"><figcaption>© Winslow Townson-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Lee started in five games with the Suns, while he played in 75 games. He also had <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/l/leeda03/gamelog/2023" rel="noopener">13 games with at least three or more three-pointers</a>. It’s important to know that he only played in just over 20 minutes per game. Once the 2022-23 season ended, Lee’s contract expired and he had the chance to hit the open market.</p><p>However, he remained loyal to the Suns and chose to stay. His return solidified the Suns’ bench depth and could’ve proven lethal with Eric Gordon also coming off the bench. When Lee was injured, it delivered a gut punch to Phoenix. They were without a premier shooter who could space the floor but provide veteran leadership.</p><p>Lee is related to Stephen Curry and has some of his leadership. After all, the two played together for four seasons before he traded colors and signed with the Suns. Although the Suns made some moves to bolster their bench, they didn’t forget about Lee. He’ll fit right in with Monte Morris, Mason Plumlee, Bol Bol, and Grayson Allen. That unit can provide size, versatility, and arguably the most important of all, three-point shooting.</p><p>As Phoenix travels and takes on the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday, it’ll be worth noting if Lee receives any playing time. Although he might show some rust, this is the perfect time to let him play and get back into game shape. But they are missing the third-best player in terms of percentage from deep in the 2022-23 season, Damion Lee.</p><p>Lee, who last year ranked third in the NBA with a 44.5 percent mark from three, is yet to play with the Suns after he resigned with the team in free agency prior to the 2023-24 campaign. He has been observed with a brace around his right knee and walking at the Suns’ Verizon 5G Performance Center.</p><p>“Hopefully, at some point towards the end of the regular season, we can start talking about with him, here he’s at,” Vogel said. “So he can get back on the floor.”</p><p>The Suns at the trade deadline added a player who will take away Lee’s time, if he is integrated into the rotation before the playoffs. Phoenix allowed a 10-2 and then a 24-4 run in the fourth quarter, in which it has been among the worst teams statistically in the 2023-24 NBA season.</p><p>The Suns <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/suns-news-kevin-durant-clippers-2" rel="noopener">were led</a> in scoring by forward Kevin Durant, who has been the healthiest member of their superstar trio. Durant is averaging 29.6 points this season and is the most consistent member of the trio including Devin Booker (26.1 PPG, 7.8 APG, 4.8 RPG) and Bradley Beal (16.4 PPG, 3.8 APG, 3.8 RPG). He won an NBA championship with the Golden State Warriors in 2022 and is seen as a vocal leader on the bench.</p><p>Lee in 2022-23 shot 44.5 percent from 3-point range, which ranked third in the NBA. He was a regular part of the Suns’ rotation until March, when forward Kevin Durant returned from injury.</p><p>Lee’s injury is a hit to the Suns’ shooting. He is one of 10 players on the team who shot above 35 percent from three last year and has the highest percentage on the roster.</p><p>Fortunately for the Suns, they have lots of options at guard. Eric Gordon is a former NBA Sixth Man of the Year, Grayson Allen started 70 games for the top team in the Eastern Conference, the Milwaukee Bucks, and former Washington Wizards guard Jordan Goodwin has been praised by coach Frank Vogel and is expected to be a top backup point guard option.</p><p>One of the Suns’ two stars at guard, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal, is expected to be on the floor most times as the team moves closer to the playoffs.</p><p>The Suns could have their best team in franchise history on the floor this season. Phoenix has Durant and Booker, who are each considered top-10 players. Beal is a former 30-point-per-game scorer and was traded to Phoenix in June for veteran point guard Chris Paul, guard Landry Shamet and five second-round picks, among other assets.</p><p>The Suns have media day Monday at Footprint Center at 10 a.m. PT. He was not highly-relied on in the latter part of the 2022-23 season, but he has traits the Suns will need to win a championship this season.</p><p>Lee, who was an NBA champion with the Golden State Warriors in 2021-22, has experience from that run the Suns can rely on. He was often one of the biggest supporters on the team’s bench this past season and said at the end of the year he would love to be back in Phoenix.</p><p>Amid a roster overhaul, the Suns kept Lee, who last season was the third-best 3-point shooter in the NBA by percentage (44.5). He could have been a valuable bench piece for Phoenix in the playoffs, but the team did not have a consistent rotation and Lee was not provided many opportunities to solidify himself.</p><p>That could change this season. New coach Frank Vogel has a lot of options to choose from on his bench. Lee’s continuity with the team, championship experience and shooting will be valuable for the Suns in their quest for their first-ever NBA championship.</p><p>Lee’s free agency analysis:</p><h2>Strengths</h2><p>Lee went undrafted in 2016 and has established himself since as an important role player. He earned significant playing time with the Warriors in the 2019-20 season and was valuable as a shooter and bench option for the team in its championship run.</p><p>The Suns had a deep roster in 2021-22 but lost some players, which led to their signing of Lee. He played a career-most 74 games this past season for the Suns and averaged 20.4 minutes per game.</p><p>Lee averaged 22.3 minutes per game in the Suns’ first 59 games before he averaged just 12.7 minutes per contest over his last 15 games played. His role changed once the Suns changed their roster dramatically after they traded for Kevin Durant.</p><p>In the playoffs, Lee’s role changed nearly every game. Coach Monty Williams did not play him in three games but also had him play 25 minutes in the team’s Game 2 loss to the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference semifinals. Lee and other Suns players, including TJ Warren and Terrence Ross, did not seem to get a fair shake from Williams in the playoffs.</p><p>The Suns used rotations in the postseason they had not used at any point during the regular season. Some of that uncertainty is from the roster shake-up, but the Suns had 25 games at the end of the regular season in which they started wing Josh Okogie only to change the lineup entirely when the playoffs began.</p><p>Lee should get an opportunity to play into the rotation. Vogel is a championship coach and Lee has acknowledged his role player ability. If he can shoot the ball at a high clip, defend, communicate and help lead the Suns, he will have an opportunity to be a consistent rotation member this season.</p><h2>Development</h2><p>Damion Lee has exceeded expectations since he entered the NBA. A four-year college player, Lee is an NBA champion who has asserted himself as a valuable piece on a winning team.</p><p>His skills will be needed for the Suns in 2023-24. Lee is an excellent communicator and is vocal on the bench.</p><p>He is a player Phoenix can rely on for support. The Suns are going all-in for a championship this season, and Lee and forward Kevin Durant are the only two players on the roster with championship experience.</p><p>Lee is a tough defender and will have to show he can compete to earn more minutes. Vogel is going to rely on tough players who buy into his scheme. Lee has the personality of a champion and can solidify a role if he produces on that end.</p><p>ClutchPoints <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/suns-news-free-agency-signings-grade-nba-offseason" rel="noopener">pointed out</a> the Suns have nine players on their roster who shot at least 35 percent from three this past season.
