D-Lee just dunked. What’s happening?” Lee said to Duane Rankin of the Arizona Republic. </p><p>The Suns missed Lee on the floor for a tumultuous 2023-24 season. The sharpshooting guard <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/l/leeda03.html" rel="noopener">shot a career-high 44.5% from beyond</a> and was a pivotal piece. He consistently spaced the floor, which was especially helpful when the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nets-news-kevin-durant-traded-by-brooklyn-to-suns">Suns traded for Kevin Durant</a> halfway through that season.</p><p>Even though Lee missed all of last season, his presence was still felt. He consistently cheered on his teammates, offered input on plays, and encouraged players when they were down. After <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/suns-news-frank-vogel-fired-disappointing-playoff-exit-vs-timberwolves">the Suns fired Frank Vogel</a>, they hired Mike Budenholzer. He implements a system that encourages spacing and ball movement. Both of which are in Lee’s repertoire.</p><h2><b>How can Damion Lee help the Suns once he’s healthy?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Damion-Lee-gives-update-about-his-injury-with-the-Suns.jpg"><figcaption>© Winslow Townson-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Lee started in five games with the Suns, while he played in 75 games. He also had <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/l/leeda03/gamelog/2023" rel="noopener">13 games with at least three or more three-pointers</a>. It’s important to know that he only played in just over 20 minutes per game. Once the 2022-23 season ended, Lee’s contract expired and he had the chance to hit the open market.</p><p>However, he remained loyal to the Suns and chose to stay. His return solidified the Suns’ bench depth and could’ve proven lethal with Eric Gordon also coming off the bench. When Lee was injured, it delivered a gut punch to Phoenix. They were without a premier shooter who could space the floor but provide veteran leadership.</p><p>Lee is related to Stephen Curry and has some of his leadership. After all, the two played together for four seasons before he traded colors and signed with the Suns. Although the Suns made some moves to bolster their bench, they didn’t forget about Lee. He’ll fit right in with Monte Morris, Mason Plumlee, Bol Bol, and Grayson Allen. That unit can provide size, versatility, and arguably the most important of all, three-point shooting.</p><p>As Phoenix travels and takes on the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday, it’ll be worth noting if Lee receives any playing time. Although he might show some rust, this is the perfect time to let him play and get back into game shape. But they are missing the third-best player in terms of percentage from deep in the 2022-23 season, Damion Lee.</p><p>Lee, who last year ranked third in the NBA with a 44.5 percent mark from three, is yet to play with the Suns after he resigned with the team in free agency prior to the 2023-24 campaign. Phoenix allowed a 10-2 and then a 24-4 run in the fourth quarter, in which it has been among the worst teams statistically in the 2023-24 NBA season.</p><p>The Suns <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/suns-news-kevin-durant-clippers-2" rel="noopener">were led</a> in scoring by forward Kevin Durant, who has been the healthiest member of their superstar trio. Durant is averaging 29.6 points this season and is the most consistent member of the trio including Devin Booker (26.1 PPG, 7.8 APG, 4.8 RPG) and Bradley Beal (16.4 PPG, 3.8 APG, 3.8 RPG). He won an NBA championship with the Golden State Warriors in 2022 and is seen as a vocal leader on the bench.</p><p>Lee in 2022-23 shot 44.5 percent from 3-point range, which ranked third in the NBA. He was a regular part of the Suns’ rotation until March, when forward Kevin Durant returned from injury.</p><p>Lee’s injury is a hit to the Suns’ shooting. He is one of 10 players on the team who shot above 35 percent from three last year and has the highest percentage on the roster.</p><p>Fortunately for the Suns, they have lots of options at guard. Eric Gordon is a former NBA Sixth Man of the Year, Grayson Allen started 70 games for the top team in the Eastern Conference, the Milwaukee Bucks, and former Washington Wizards guard Jordan Goodwin has been praised by coach Frank Vogel and is expected to be a top backup point guard option.</p><p>One of the Suns’ two stars at guard, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal, is expected to be on the floor most times as the team moves closer to the playoffs.</p><p>The Suns could have their best team in franchise history on the floor this season. Phoenix has Durant and Booker, who are each considered top-10 players. Beal is a former 30-point-per-game scorer and was traded to Phoenix in June for veteran point guard Chris Paul, guard Landry Shamet and five second-round picks, among other assets.</p><p>The Suns have media day Monday at Footprint Center at 10 a.m. PT. He was not highly-relied on in the latter part of the 2022-23 season, but he has traits the Suns will need to win a championship this season.</p><p>Lee, who was an NBA champion with the Golden State Warriors in 2021-22, has experience from that run the Suns can rely on. He was often one of the biggest supporters on the team’s bench this past season and said at the end of the year he would love to be back in Phoenix.</p><p>Amid a roster overhaul, the Suns kept Lee, who last season was the third-best 3-point shooter in the NBA by percentage (44.5). He could have been a valuable bench piece for Phoenix in the playoffs, but the team did not have a consistent rotation and Lee was not provided many opportunities to solidify himself.</p><p>That could change this season. New coach Frank Vogel has a lot of options to choose from on his bench. Lee’s continuity with the team, championship experience and shooting will be valuable for the Suns in their quest for their first-ever NBA championship.</p><p>Lee’s free agency analysis:</p><h2>Strengths</h2><p>Lee went undrafted in 2016 and has established himself since as an important role player. He earned significant playing time with the Warriors in the 2019-20 season and was valuable as a shooter and bench option for the team in its championship run.</p><p>The Suns had a deep roster in 2021-22 but lost some players, which led to their signing of Lee. He played a career-most 74 games this past season for the Suns and averaged 20.4 minutes per game.</p><p>Lee averaged 22.3 minutes per game in the Suns’ first 59 games before he averaged just 12.7 minutes per contest over his last 15 games played. His role changed once the Suns changed their roster dramatically after they traded for Kevin Durant.</p><p>In the playoffs, Lee’s role changed nearly every game. Coach Monty Williams did not play him in three games but also had him play 25 minutes in the team’s Game 2 loss to the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference semifinals. Lee and other Suns players, including TJ Warren and Terrence Ross, did not seem to get a fair shake from Williams in the playoffs.</p><p>The Suns used rotations in the postseason they had not used at any point during the regular season. Some of that uncertainty is from the roster shake-up, but the Suns had 25 games at the end of the regular season in which they started wing Josh Okogie only to change the lineup entirely when the playoffs began.</p><p>Lee should get an opportunity to play into the rotation. Vogel is a championship coach and Lee has acknowledged his role player ability. If he can shoot the ball at a high clip, defend, communicate and help lead the Suns, he will have an opportunity to be a consistent rotation member this season.</p><h2>Development</h2><p>Damion Lee has exceeded expectations since he entered the NBA. A four-year college player, Lee is an NBA champion who has asserted himself as a valuable piece on a winning team.</p><p>His skills will be needed for the Suns in 2023-24. Lee is an excellent communicator and is vocal on the bench.</p><p>He is a player Phoenix can rely on for support. The Suns are going all-in for a championship this season, and Lee and forward Kevin Durant are the only two players on the roster with championship experience.</p><p>Lee is a tough defender and will have to show he can compete to earn more minutes. Vogel is going to rely on tough players who buy into his scheme. Lee has the personality of a champion and can solidify a role if he produces on that end.</p><p>ClutchPoints <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/suns-news-free-agency-signings-grade-nba-offseason" rel="noopener">pointed out</a> the Suns have nine players on their roster who shot at least 35 percent from three this past season. It was also a special occasion for Suns shooting guard Damion Lee, who marked his first return to his former stomping ground since <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/suns-news-devin-booker-tips-hat-to-warriors-after-damion-lee-epic-game-winner-vs-mavs" rel="noopener">taking his talents</a> to Phoenix during the offseason.</p><p>The capacity crowd cheered on Lee as he was <a href="https://twitter.com/NBCSWarriors/status/1613011163004178433" rel="noopener">handed his championship ring</a> by none other than the GOAT shooter himself, Stephen Curry. The kid is named Daxon Wardell-Xavier Lee, and he shares the Wardell name with Steph.</p><p>This may be a memorable occasion for Lee, but you can be sure that Curry and the Warriors will want to mark his return with a loss for the Suns. This is Steph’s first game back since injuring his shoulder back in mid-December and he will be out to make up for lost time.</p><p>The Suns, on the other hand, are extremely shorthanded for Tuesday’s matchup with Devin Booker, Chris Paul, and Deandre Ayton all sitting out due to injury. Damion Lee hit a <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/recap/_/gameId/401468028">tough midrange jumper</a> with 9.7 seconds left on the clock, and after Luka Doncic missed a potential game-winning three, the Suns walked away with the win despite trailing by as many as 22 points in this one. One guy who wasn’t happy with the play was Los Angeles Clippers star Paul George, as he believes that the refs missed a call on Lee’s game-winning shot.</p><p>George, who was watching the game with the Clippers not playing on Wednesday night, believed that Lee traveled in the buildup to his jumper. Lee has to collect himself on the right wing when he picks his dribble up, and it does look like both of his feet may have come off the ground as he tried to gain his balance. Both the Suns and Mavericks figure to be contenders at the top of the Western Conference with the Clippers, so maybe he had a bit of a rooting interest for Dallas in this game. Or, maybe he simply liked watching the close contest and wanted to see more.</p><p>Whatever the case may be, the Suns aren’t going to complain, as they rallied to pick up a big win to kick off their new season. After a rocky offseason, Phoenix was able to avenge their blowout loss to Dallas in Game 7 of the Western Conference semifinals from last season, and it should allow them to put their best foot forward for the rest of the year. For team’s like the Clippers, that’s bad news, so maybe that’s why George was so insistent on a travel taking place on this play.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

If he's not writing or watching sports, he's likely scouring online for his next NBA card purchase.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry couldn’t get more hyped up after seeing his brother-in-law and former teammate Damion Lee save the Phoenix Suns against Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks.</p><p>The Suns fell behind by as much as 22 points in the game and looked like they were on their way to another embarrassing defeat at the hands of Doncic and the Mavs. However, a huge second half allowed them to get back into the game before Lee <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/damion-lee-stuns-luka-doncic-mavs-with-impossible-game-winning-shot/" rel="noopener">sealed the deal</a>.</p><p>After the Suns got the 105-100 lead with less than two minutes remaining, Doncic scored five straight points to tie things up. But if there was ever a must-win opener, it was this one for a Phoenix team that gets the monkey off their back in a home win against Luka Doncic’s Mavs.</p><p>Chris Paul had a tough first game, finishing with six points on 1-for-6 shooting from the field. Now, another one is heading out after Damion Lee reached a deal with the Phoenix Suns.</p><p>According to <a href="https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1543073019093983232" rel="noopener">Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN</a>, Lee is moving to the Suns on a one-year contract. Hence, some departures are expected. Unfortunately for them, they have also lost the likes of Otto Porter Jr., Gary Payton II and Juan Toscano-Anderson.</p><p>Fortunately for the Warriors, they were able to get Kevon Looney <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-playoff-hero-kevon-looney-returns-to-dubs-on-3-year-25-5-million-contract/" rel="noopener">to re-sign on a new three-year, $25.5 million deal</a>. The Dubs made it a priority to bring him back, though it is definitely quite painful that they weren’t able to retain the likes of Porter and Payton II.</p><p>As for Damion Lee, he joins a Suns team with title aspirations after being a contender for the past two seasons. The veteran guard brings some much-needed experience to Phoenix, and while he didn’t get to play a lot in the 2022 playoffs, he did show flashes of brilliance throughout the 2021-22 campaign with the Dubs. He also was connected with veteran Andre Iguodala over a decade ago, even though Igoudala didn’t know Lee existed.</p><p>“My mom worked in Delaware and through her job, she had a five-game ticket pass to go see the Sixers play,” Lee told ClutchPoints. “I would go watch the Sixers play when he (Iguodala) was in Philly, him, Allen Iverson, Kyle Korver all those guys.</p><p>All season Lee has been a key contributor to the Warriors’ success. He often shares the court with Iguodala in the second unit. Not many players get to play alongside the legends they paid to see during their younger years.</p><p>“I remember watching him and I would be in a 300 level section,” Lee said. I was there when AI had 60. I was there when the Antonio Daniels Double Crossover happened. One player Golden State is hoping can step up and help out is Damion Lee. He has averaged a little over eight points per game, to go along with four boards in just under 21 minutes per game.</p><p>Lee has shown flashes this season, but has mostly underwhelmed for the Warriors. He is in the middle of his 4th season with Golden State. During 2019-2020, he averaged a career-high 29 minutes per game. That translated to almost 13 points per game, but his production has dipped ever since. His playing time has therefore suffered as well.</p><p>Both Stephen Curry and Draymond Green are currently listed as day to day. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-steve-kerr-gets-honest-on-sitting-out-stephen-curry-against-pelicans/" rel="noopener">Curry suffered what is reported to be a quad contusion</a> in Wednesday night’s loss to the Mavericks. Meanwhile, Green is dealing with a left hip injury.
