To set up a date between Victor Wembanyama and the star-studded Team USA, the Americans will have to once again beat Nikola Jokic and his Serbia squad.</p><p>Team USA <a href="https://www.espn.com/mens-olympics-basketball/boxscore/_/gameId/401690984" rel="noopener">beat Serbia 110-84</a> just over a week ago at the start of the Games.</p><h2><b>Victor Wembanyama and France move on to Paris Olympics Gol Medal Game</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Victor-Wembanyama-1.jpg"><figcaption>Rob Schumacher-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>The Victor Wembanyama posterizing dunk on Daniel Theis of Germany was great, but the big news coming out of Paris is that France moves on to the Olympic final to take on the winner or Team USA vs. Serbia.</p><p>France won on home soil 73-69 to guarantee that they take home no worse than a silver medal in this Olympic Games.</p><p>Real Madrid’s Guerschon Yabusele led all scorers with 17 points while Isaïa Cordinier of Virtus Bologna in Italy added 16. Wembanyama was the team’s third-leading scorer with 11 points and also added seven rebounds and three blocks. On the German side,  Brooklyn Nets guard Dennis Schroder had 18 to lead his team in a losing effort.</p><p>France has played basketball in 11 Olympic Games and has won the silver medal three times, in 1948, 2000, and 2020. If they could take home the gold in front of their home-country fans it would be the first Olympic gold medal in French basketball history, although they did win gold in Eurobasket 2013.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He has words and will travel, just not on the court.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The New Orleans Pelicans had to replace nearly all of the team’s minutes at the center position from a season ago going into the initial NBA Free Agency frenzy. Jonas Valanciunas jumped ship in a sign-and-trade to the Washington Wizards. Dependable backups Larry Nance Jr. and Cody Zeller were sent to the Atlanta Hawks in the Dejounte Murray deal. Options were limited for a franchise that usually avoids the luxury tax yet the Pelicans landed a three-time Bundesliga champion with NBA Finals experience.</p><p>EVP David Griffin has seemingly decided to gamble on Daniel Theis being the right piece for the roster when conventional wisdom says the team needs a more expensive (re: more talented) starting center. Regardless of price there arguably were not any better options on the market given the team’s circumstances. The expectation is any Brandon Ingram blockbuster deal will bring back an All-Star big man.</p><p>The Pelicans value Theis’ championship experience and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/yves-missis-mediocre-major-college-moments-should-worry-pelicans">Yves Missi needs the mentorship</a>. This signing seems a safe bet with more possible pathways to success than failure given the opportunity costs. Theis has shown a skill set that should work well in New Orleans too. Coming at the right veteran-minimum price is just the cherry that sweetens the deal.</p><p>New Orleans is <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/40520459/sources-pelicans-add-center-daniel-theis-1-year-deal" rel="noopener">adding the veteran big man</a> on a one-year contract and that move is already looking like good business. Theis finished with 13 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and a steal in a tune-up game against Team USA. He will be asked to play the same supporting role in the Crescent City. Production on that level would be far beyond what’s expected given the subsidized salary cap hit.</p><h2><b>Daniel Theis excels where historically fail</b></h2><p>New Orleans needs more than a <a href="https://twitter.com/DoingItDodson/status/1813443657917489472" rel="noopener">starting or closing center</a>. Rebounding, keeping opponents out of the paint, and increasing the three-point shot volume are team-wide priorities. Theis helps in all areas.</p><p>Theis averaged 6.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, an assist, and a block in 17.1 minutes per game with the Clippers last season. He was also 26-70 (37.1%) from three-point range. For comparison, Valanciunas was 37-120 (30.8%) with the Pelicans. The 31-year-old’s rebounding (8.7 per 36 minutes) and shot-blocking (1.8 per 36 minutes) should scale up in a slightly more involved role.</p><p>Playing as a supporting option while doing the dirty work down low for Zion Williamson and Dejounte Murray will be familiar. Theis will do the same for Franz Wagner, Moritz Wagner, and Dennis Schroder while on national team duty at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The stakes are high early too. Odds are Germany versus France will likely determine who gets to avoid Team USA until the Gold Medal game.</p><p>Everyone will be watching Theis battle NBA Defensive Player of the Year candidate Victor Wembanyama alongside current holder Rudy Gobert. The Pelicans will look for their newest addition against Rui Hachimura, Yuta Watanabe, and Bruno Caboclo. The 19-year-old will need around 10 minutes a night to develop. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/karlo-matkovic-answering-pelicans-closing-center-question">Karlo Matkovic is a curiosity</a> more than a sure-fire 10-12 minute contributor even after a strong Summer League showing. Can Theis play nice enough for the Pelicans to pull this off?</p><p>Having <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/why-pelicans-have-fingers-crossed-going-into-2024-paris-olympics">representatives in the Olympics</a> is an honor but also a slight headache as well. No one in New Orleans will be watching Germany play without praying Theis finishes the game healthy. After a short tenure with the Indiana Pacers, Theis was the decision maker and where he was going to land in the offseason. While he flirted with the idea of moving back to Boston, the Clippers gave Theis a compelling offer.</p><p>“Obviously, I had a couple of conversations (with Boston),” said Theis, per MassLive. “I talked to Jayson (Tatum) a little bit there with Jaylen (Brown). But like I said, the Clippers were pretty fast, gave me the <a href="https://www.masslive.com/celtics/2024/01/celtics-stars-recruited-former-boston-center-after-pacers-buyout.html" rel="noopener">right chance</a> at the right time.</p><p>This was Theis’ turn to decide his fate. Following the Pacers buyout, he wanted to be in a place that completed his skillset and put him in the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/clippers-news-kawhi-leonard-paul-george-james-harden-snubbed-as-nba-all-star-starters" rel="noopener">best position</a> to succeed. With superstars all over the Clippers roster, he believe Los Angeles was a perfect fit. The veteran big man is expected to play tonight against the Houston Rockets.</p><p>A seven-year NBA veteran, Daniel Theis has career averages of 7.5 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.3 assists on 54.2 percent shooting from the field. He’s started 148 of a career 314 regular season games playing with the Boston Celtics, Chicago Bulls, Houston Rockets, and Indiana Pacers. He’s also started 22 of 40 playoff games, all with the Celtics.</p><p>LA has been shorthanded at the forward position since backup center Mason Plumlee suffered an MCL sprain against the New York Knicks in early November. Someday maybe it will -- especially when he's been working for ClutchPoints since August 2022.)</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The Los Angeles Clippers, by virtue of the James Harden trade, gutted their frontcourt depth as they sent away three of the power forwards in their rotation to the Philadelphia 76ers. And then in Harden’s very first game with the team, the Clippers proceeded to lose backup center Mason Plumlee <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/clippers-news-mason-plumlee-mcl-injury" rel="noopener">to a knee injury</a>, making LA’s frontcourt one of the thinnest in the entire association.</p><p>Now, the Clippers have already made a move to rectify their lack of quality frontcourt depth, signing Daniel Theis after the German center <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/clippers-news-daniel-theis-to-sign-pending-pacers-buyout" rel="noopener">agreed to a buyout</a> with the Indiana Pacers. But before signing Theis, the Clippers looked into other options when it comes to infusing their frontcourt with some athleticism and rebounding. According to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports on the latest “No Cap Room” podcast via RealGM, they <a href="https://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/273702/Clippers-Looked-Into-Signing-Kai-Jones" rel="noopener">reportedly pondered the possibility</a> of signing Kai Jones, who <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/hornets-news-kai-jones-waived" rel="noopener">fell out of favor</a> with the Charlotte Hornets this past offseason.</p><p>Given the Clippers’ lack of youth up and down the roster (or at least quality youth, as Kobe Brown, Moussa Diabate, and Amir Coffey haven’t exactly earned the trust of the coaching staff), acquiring Jones could have been a good shout for the team. Jones is only 22 years old, and he has been one of the best athletes in the league over the past few seasons — he’s the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/hornets-news-kai-jones-embarrasses-victor-wembanyama-with-epic-poster-dunk" rel="noopener">first player to posterize</a> Victor Wembanyama after all.</p><p>Nonetheless, there, of course, are concerns surrounding Kai Jones off the court. This offseason, Jones landed in hot water when he went live on Instagram while appearing to be <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/not-on-drugs-or-intoxicated-hornets-kai-jones-shoots-down-rumors-after-wild-ig-live" rel="noopener">on some sort of substances</a>, and his evaluation of his own abilities has <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/hornets-news-kai-jones-drops-bold-new-mvp-dpoy-declarations-after-charlotte-release" rel="noopener">made him look very delusiona</a>l. Moreover, Jones also <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/hornets-news-kai-jones-caught-trashing-his-own-teammates-on-social-media" rel="noopener">took a few shots</a> at his Hornets teammates, so signing him doesn’t come with any risks for the Clippers or any other prospective suitor.</p><p>Be that as it may, the Clippers still devoted one of their open roster spots to Josh Primo, another player who has a checkered past off the court, so it’s not like the team is being risk-averse. Perhaps they saw Daniel Theis as the overall better option given how well he performed for gold medal-winning Germany during the 2023 FIBA World Cup.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
