The fact that the surgery was successful is promising, and Dallas is hopeful to have Exum return during the middle of the season. Still, his absence is far from ideal as the Mavs prepare to begin the 2024-25 season.</p><p>Injuries have unfortunately been problematic for Exum. He dealt with injury trouble last season and battled a finger injury during the Olympics. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-dante-exum-resiliency-secret-dallas-playoffs">Exum’s secret to success is resiliency</a>, though, something he explained to ClutchPoints during the 2023-24 campaign.</p><p>“I just <a href="https://twitter.com/JoeyMistretta_/status/1767959066217787565" rel="noopener">love the game of basketball</a>. I want to play it at the highest level,” Exum told ClutchPoints in March of 2024. “That’s the main thing. I always set challenges for myself with whatever I’m doing, I think that’s been the main reason why… no matter what it was, whether it was when I was going over to Europe I set that challenge for myself and then coming back obviously.”</p><p>Exum understands that injuries have been a concern for him. Spencer Dinwiddie, who the Mavs added during the offseason, may see a role increase with Exum out for three months. On Sunday, during <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/olympics-news-lebron-james-instant-reaction-to-team-usas-close-win-over-australia">Australia’s final exhibition game</a> in preparation for the 2024 Paris Olympics, Dallas Mavericks guard Dante Exum sustained a finger dislocation that immediately <a href="https://www.espn.com.au/nbl/story/_/id/40612153/olympics-boomers-dante-exum-suffers-dislocated-finger-france-win" rel="noopener">forced him to exit</a> the game, according to Olgun Uluc of ESPN.</p><p>With <a href="https://youtu.be/xQBvX9UrP4Y?si=d3jV_KtmTmeau2qe&amp;t=269" rel="noopener">around 5:40</a> left in the second quarter, Exum received the ball on the left wing and drove against French forward Guerschon Yabusele. The Mavericks guard, however, ran into a thicket of defenders in the lane. He had the ball knocked loose, with Bilal Coulibaly swiping at him, and Exum immediately looked at his finger, noticed that something was wrong, and went directly to the Australia bench. He then had his finger checked, and it was confirmed that he had suffered a dislocation — preventing him from returning to the contest.</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>Dante Exum will have around five more days of rest to see if he could play through his finger dislocation amid the Boomers’ bid for another Olympic podium finish — a worthy follow-up to their bronze medal win in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The good news is that Australia has enough depth at the guard positions, and they still managed to pull out an 83-82 victory over France to end their Olympic tune-up season on a high note even with the Mavericks guard leaving early.</p><h2>Australia can weather the Mavericks guard’s absence</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Dante-Exum-and-Luka-Doncic-celebrate.jpg"></figure><p>The luxury for Australia is that they are very deep at the guard positions. Their rotation is filled with players who can line up not just at the one and the two, but at the three as well, a role that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-dante-exum-resiliency-secret-dallas-playoffs">Dante Exum will play</a> on the team, as long as he’s healthy.</p><p>The Boomers have Dyson Daniels, who scored the game-winner against France on Sunday, who’s ready to take on a larger role and he provides a similar impact to Exum on the hardwood. Moreover, Australia still has veterans Patty Mills and Matthew Dellavedova, while Josh Giddey and Josh Green are more than capable ballhandlers as well, with size to defend bigger players to boot.</p><p>It’s unclear just how much the dislocated finger will be affecting Dante Exum moving forward. But with the Olympics coming just once every four years, the smart money is to bet on Exum playing through injury as he relishes the opportunity to fight for his country and aid in their quest for another medal.</p><h2>Previewing the Boomers’ Olympic journey</h2><p>Australia will be looking to overcome the dreaded Group of Death in the 2024 Paris Olympics, beginning with a battle against the mighty Spain on July 27. Spain is always a difficult team to play against in these competitions, as they are very well-coached and they have a few NBA veterans leading the way.</p><p>Australia then has to take on a Canada team led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jamal Murray on July 30, and then they’ll be ending their group stage journey with a tussle against Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Greece. Mavs guard Dante Exum took some time for an exclusive interview with ClutchPoints before the game.</p><p>Exum has performed well while on the court in 2023-24. In fact, he’s played a pivotal role at times. Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving have led the charge, but Dallas’ depth has stepped up as well.</p><p>Exum, however, has appeared in only 39 games due to injury concerns. Fortunately, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-news-dante-exum-return-raptors-long-injury-absence" rel="noopener">he’s healthy at the moment</a> with the playoffs drawing near.</p><p>Exum’s basketball journey has involved adversity. He emerged as a role player early in his career. Exum ended up in the EuroLeague during the 2021-22 season, and played there for two years before landing a deal with Dallas before the 2023-24 campaign.</p><p>And now, Exum has become one of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavs-dante-exum-x-factor-career-dallas-lakers" rel="noopener">Mavericks’ primary X-factors</a>. I know you came back from injury a little while ago, how are you feeling?</b></p><p><b>Dante Exum: </b>I am feeling really good. Obviously I was out for a bit, came back, and went back down. I think the main thing was just getting right and making sure I’m at a good point which I am now.</p><p><b>Joey Mistretta: I don’t know if you read fan comments, but everyone is so impressed with you. All the fans are just so excited to see you play. What does that mean to you?</b></p><p><b>Dante Exum: </b>It means a lot. Honestly I think, just to be… I mean, everybody wants to be wanted. I think just from my path and how I’ve got here, everything. Going overseas and coming back, I think to be wanted by a fanbase… There’s no better feeling.</p><p><b>Joey Mistretta: I love your story, just the way you fought back. I want to play it at the highest level. That’s the main thing. I always set challenges for myself with whatever I’m doing, I think that’s been the main reason why… no matter what it was, whether it was when I was going over to Europe I set that challenge for myself and then coming back obviously.</p><p><b>Joey Mistretta: What is one or two areas of your game that you feel you have improved the most this year?</b></p><p><b>Dante Exum: </b>Definitely my shooting. Just the confidence, being able to knockdown an open shot. Take my time. Just trusting myself.
