Following the shocking trade of Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, the team has seemingly been dropping like flies in terms of injuries. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/mavericks-news-anthony-davis-trending-promising-direction-injury-recovery">Anthony Davis has not played since his debut due to an adductor injury</a>, and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/mavericks-news-kyrie-irving-sends-heartwarming-message-fans-amid-acl-injury">Kyrie Irving was ruled out for the year after an ACL injury</a>. The brutal injury news continued for the Mavericks as Dante Exum was just <a href="https://x.com/ShamsCharania/status/1900725000853758105" rel="noopener">ruled out indefinitely</a> after breaking a bone in his hand, as per Shams Charania of ESPN.</p><p>Dante Exum suffered the hand injury during the Mavericks’ game against the Houston Rockets on Friday. He left the game early and was initially ruled out for the remainder of the game. He finished with two points in seven minutes. This latest news though certainly clouds his availability for the rest of the season, and is sure to crush Mavericks’ fans.</p><p>In addition to Davis, Irving and now Exum, the Mavericks are also without Dereck Lively II, Daniel Gafford, Jaden Hardy, Olivier-Maxence Prosper, Kai Jones and PJ Washington. They have an open roster spot which they used to bring in Moses Brown on a 10-day contract, but due to salary cap restraints operating above the first apron, they are not currently able to sign a player for the remainder of the season past any 10-day contract.</p><p>Exum actually began the 2024-25 season sidelined due to a wrist injury, but had made his return to the lineup. Dante Exum was ready to step up, though.</p><h2><b>Dante Exum leads the Mavericks</b></h2><p>Exum, who missed the first three months of the season after recovering from preseason wrist surgery, led Dallas with 27 points to go along with four assists, three rebounds, two steals and one block. Marshall, who had been dealing with an illness, was upgraded to questionable for the Dallas Mavericks-New Orleans Pelicans game on Wednesday. Exum, who has yet to play during the 2024-25 season after undergoing preseason wrist surgery, was upgraded to doubtful. Marshall was ultimately upgraded to available before the game, while Exum was ruled out ahead of Wednesday’s tip-off. Mavs head coach Jason Kidd said Exum <a href="https://x.com/JoeyMistretta_/status/1884750154370089374" rel="noopener">could possibly return at some point during the team’s road trip</a>, however.</p><p>Kidd emphasized the word “maybe” when discussing the possibility of Exum returning during the road trip. Still, he is clearly nearing a return.</p><h2><b>Will Dante Exum return during Mavericks’ road trip?</b></h2><p>Wednesday night’s game in New Orleans represents the first of a five-game road trip for the Mavs. The team will travel to Detroit to play the Pistons on Friday before playing the Cavs in Cleveland in a Sunday contest. Dallas will conclude the road trip with games against the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday and Boston Celtics on Thursday.</p><p>In other words, if Dante Exum is able to return within the next week then he will play during the road trip. The Mavs will certainly not rush him back. The primary focus is making sure that he is completely ready to play after missing so much time following his wrist surgery.</p><p>Dallas is unquestionably looking forward to his injury return, though. Shams Charania of ESPN <a href="https://x.com/ShamsCharania/status/1844024008372838587" rel="noopener">later reported</a> that Exum is expected to miss three weeks as he recovers from surgery.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-news-dante-exum-injury-nba-preseason">Exum suffered the wrist injury during training camp</a>. It was initially considered a serious injury but Exum’s return timeline was not revealed until Wednesday. The fact that the surgery was successful is promising, and Dallas is hopeful to have Exum return during the middle of the season. Still, his absence is far from ideal as the Mavs prepare to begin the 2024-25 season.</p><p>Injuries have unfortunately been problematic for Exum. He dealt with injury trouble last season and battled a finger injury during the Olympics. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-dante-exum-resiliency-secret-dallas-playoffs">Exum’s secret to success is resiliency</a>, though, something he explained to ClutchPoints during the 2023-24 campaign.</p><p>“I just <a href="https://twitter.com/JoeyMistretta_/status/1767959066217787565" rel="noopener">love the game of basketball</a>. I want to play it at the highest level,” Exum told ClutchPoints in March of 2024. “That’s the main thing. I always set challenges for myself with whatever I’m doing, I think that’s been the main reason why… no matter what it was, whether it was when I was going over to Europe I set that challenge for myself and then coming back obviously.”</p><p>Exum understands that injuries have been a concern for him. However, he is confident in his ability when healthy.</p><p>“I was playing really well… Getting back into the lineup and fighting, it was hard,” Exum <a href="https://x.com/JoeyMistretta_/status/1840817791986696267" rel="noopener">said of his 2023-24 season</a> while speaking at Mavericks Media Day on September 30. “But I think for the minutes that I was given and the opportunities I was given, I was doing… everything I could. The stats weren’t the same (after returning from injury). If you look at it as a basketball mind… I felt like I was contributing just as much.”</p><h2><b>What Dante Exum injury means for Mavericks’ 2024-25 season</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Dante-Exum-during-Mavericks-Media-Day.jpg"><figcaption>Jerome Miron-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Exum, 29, averaged 7.8 points per game on 53.3 percent field goal and 49.1 percent three-point shooting during the 2023-24 campaign. He did not play in the NBA in 2021-22 and 2022-23, so it was a quality return for the guard. However, Exum was limited to 55 games played due to injuries.</p><p>Exum was expected to play a role for the Mavs during the upcoming season as a backup guard. Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving will receive most of the minutes in the backcourt, but having a player such as Exum to help matters off the bench would have benefited the Mavs.</p><p>Dallas, though, made an effort to increase roster depth during the offseason. Spencer Dinwiddie, who the Mavs added during the offseason, may see a role increase with Exum out for three months. Jaden Hardy is another player who could receive more minutes this year.</p><p>With all of that being said, Exum will be missed. Dallas is hoping he can return as soon as possible, but the Mavs will also proceed with caution. Exum appeared to have endured a finger injury and he exited the game as a result.</p><p>Grant Afseth of Sports Illustrated provided an important Exum update on Monday, reporting that the guard has a <a href="https://x.com/GrantAfseth/status/1815373365386805742" rel="noopener">compound finger dislocation</a> but there is no fracture. Afseth also reports that Exum is expected to play for the Australian national team in the Olympics despite the injury concern.</p><h2><b>Dante Exum set for important role with Australian national team</b></h2><p>Exum will play a big role for Australia in the 2024 Olympics. He will be joined by other NBA players such as Patty Mills, Joe Ingles and former Mavericks teammate Josh Green.</p><p>Australia has produced impressive basketball talent over the years. They should have an opportunity to make some noise in the Olympics. The team is not the favorite by any means, but they certainly should not be overlooked. There is more than enough veteran prowess on the roster to help Australia pull off some upsets.</p><p>Exum has played both in the NBA and overseas. His basketball future was in question before landing a contract with the Mavericks before the 2023-24 season. Exum <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-dante-exum-resiliency-secret-dallas-playoffs">enjoyed a number of big moments</a> in Dallas during the 2023-24 campaign. Although his playing time decreased in the postseason, Exum was still an impactful player overall.</p><h2><b>Exum’s impact on Mavericks</b></h2><p>Exum had not played in the NBA since 2020-21 before the 2023-24 season. The Mavs gave him an opportunity and Exum ultimately averaged 7.8 points per game on 53.3 percent field goal and 49.1 percent three-point shooting across 55 games played (17 starts). Exum averaged just under 20 minutes per outing as well.</p><p>He had some ups and downs in Dallas. Still, it was a promising step for a player who previously endured uncertainty in his basketball career. On Sunday, during <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/olympics-news-lebron-james-instant-reaction-to-team-usas-close-win-over-australia">Australia’s final exhibition game</a> in preparation for the 2024 Paris Olympics, Dallas Mavericks guard Dante Exum sustained a finger dislocation that immediately <a href="https://www.espn.com.au/nbl/story/_/id/40612153/olympics-boomers-dante-exum-suffers-dislocated-finger-france-win" rel="noopener">forced him to exit</a> the game, according to Olgun Uluc of ESPN.</p><p>With <a href="https://youtu.be/xQBvX9UrP4Y?si=d3jV_KtmTmeau2qe&amp;t=269" rel="noopener">around 5:40</a> left in the second quarter, Exum received the ball on the left wing and drove against French forward Guerschon Yabusele. The Mavericks guard, however, ran into a thicket of defenders in the lane. He had the ball knocked loose, with Bilal Coulibaly swiping at him, and Exum immediately looked at his finger, noticed that something was wrong, and went directly to the Australia bench. He then had his finger checked, and it was confirmed that he had suffered a dislocation — preventing him from returning to the contest.</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>Dante Exum will have around five more days of rest to see if he could play through his finger dislocation amid the Boomers’ bid for another Olympic podium finish — a worthy follow-up to their bronze medal win in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The good news is that Australia has enough depth at the guard positions, and they still managed to pull out an 83-82 victory over France to end their Olympic tune-up season on a high note even with the Mavericks guard leaving early.</p><h2>Australia can weather the Mavericks guard’s absence</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Dante-Exum-and-Luka-Doncic-celebrate.jpg"></figure><p>The luxury for Australia is that they are very deep at the guard positions. Their rotation is filled with players who can line up not just at the one and the two, but at the three as well, a role that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-dante-exum-resiliency-secret-dallas-playoffs">Dante Exum will play</a> on the team, as long as he’s healthy.</p><p>The Boomers have Dyson Daniels, who scored the game-winner against France on Sunday, who’s ready to take on a larger role and he provides a similar impact to Exum on the hardwood. Moreover, Australia still has veterans Patty Mills and Matthew Dellavedova, while Josh Giddey and Josh Green are more than capable ballhandlers as well, with size to defend bigger players to boot.</p><p>It’s unclear just how much the dislocated finger will be affecting Dante Exum moving forward. But with the Olympics coming just once every four years, the smart money is to bet on Exum playing through injury as he relishes the opportunity to fight for his country and aid in their quest for another medal.</p><h2>Previewing the Boomers’ Olympic journey</h2><p>Australia will be looking to overcome the dreaded Group of Death in the 2024 Paris Olympics, beginning with a battle against the mighty Spain on July 27. Spain is always a difficult team to play against in these competitions, as they are very well-coached and they have a few NBA veterans leading the way.</p><p>Australia then has to take on a Canada team led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jamal Murray on July 30, and then they’ll be ending their group stage journey with a tussle against Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Greece. In fact, he’s played a pivotal role at times. Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving have led the charge, but Dallas’ depth has stepped up as well.</p><p>Exum, however, has appeared in only 39 games due to injury concerns. Fortunately, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-news-dante-exum-return-raptors-long-injury-absence" rel="noopener">he’s healthy at the moment</a> with the playoffs drawing near.</p><p>Exum’s basketball journey has involved adversity. He emerged as a role player early in his career. Exum ended up in the EuroLeague during the 2021-22 season, and played there for two years before landing a deal with Dallas before the 2023-24 campaign.</p><p>And now, Exum has become one of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavs-dante-exum-x-factor-career-dallas-lakers" rel="noopener">Mavericks’ primary X-factors</a>. All the fans are just so excited to see you play. What does that mean to you?</b></p><p><b>Dante Exum: </b>It means a lot. Honestly I think, just to be… I mean, everybody wants to be wanted. I think just from my path and how I’ve got here, everything. Going overseas and coming back, I think to be wanted by a fanbase… There’s no better feeling.</p><p><b>Joey Mistretta: I love your story, just the way you fought back. I want to play it at the highest level. That’s the main thing. I always set challenges for myself with whatever I’m doing, I think that’s been the main reason why… no matter what it was, whether it was when I was going over to Europe I set that challenge for myself and then coming back obviously.</p><p><b>Joey Mistretta: What is one or two areas of your game that you feel you have improved the most this year?</b></p><p><b>Dante Exum: </b>Definitely my shooting. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-fatal-flaw-fixed-2024-nba-all-star-break" rel="noopener">Mavs’ one fatal flaw</a> that could doom them down the stretch run was also discussed, and it has nothing to do with health.</p><p>With a road matchup against the Raptors looming, Kidd shared an update on Exum’s status.</p><h2><b>Kidd Speaks on Exum’s Availability </b></h2><p>Kidd said that Exum went through Monday and Saturday’s practices well according to a <a href="https://twitter.com/townbrad/status/1762607102160171171" rel="noopener">report from Brad Townsend</a>.</p><p>He added that it is “possible” that Exum will play against Toronto at 7;30 p.m. on Wednesday.</p><p>The Mavericks had won seven consecutive games prior to their recent two-game losing skid.</p><h2><b>Mavs Set For Showdown in Canada </b></h2><p>The Mavs are 33-25 and scheduled to face a Raptors team with just 22 wins on the season.</p><p>Exum has averaged 2.8 rebounds per game and 2.8 assists per game this season. He’s shot 57.1% from the field and has added a solid veteran presence on both sides of the court.</p><p>Exum is just one of a handful of players Kidd needs to step up on Wednesday.</p><p>The Mavs were crushed on the glass vs. the Cavs. They were outrebounded 47-36 as Doncic led with 9 rebounds and Max Kleber had seven off the bench.</p><p>Tim Hardaway Jr. and Kyrie Irving are among the players Kidd will be counting on to take care of business early for the Mavericks against the Raptors in Toronto.</p><p>Irving had 30 points, six rebounds and three assists against the Cavs in a losing effort.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Dante Exum is the only player who was limited at practice on Wednesday, Mavs head coach Jason Kidd revealed.</p><p>“Exum did some work, non-contact so he’s going in the right direction,” Kidd said Wednesday. “Besides Exum, everybody participated, everybody looked good.”</p><p>Luka Doncic missed Tuesday’s practice as he received an extra day off following the NBA All-Star break. Doncic returned to practice Wednesday, though.</p><p>“Luka was back,” Kidd said. “As Doc said the players were in Cabo, he enjoyed his vacation so it’s good to have him back… He looked great, refreshed, and happy.”</p><p>The Mavs are currently <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-dallas-kevin-durant-gameplan-suns-jason-kidd-assessment" rel="noopener">preparing for a clash</a> on Thursday against the Phoenix Suns. Having the majority of the roster healthy is a great step for Dallas. Injuries have played an unfortunate role throughout the 2023-24 season, so the goal is now to try to maintain their health moving forward.</p><p>Dallas also ended the first-half on a six-game winning streak. It will be interesting to see if they can recapture their momentum following the NBA All-Star break.</p><h2><b>Mavericks looking to keep winning streak alive vs. Suns</b></h2><p>“I think you talk about the energy and effort, those are the things that we can control,” Kidd said in reference to how Dallas can keep their momentum trending in a positive direction. “Understanding being healthy, the different sub-patterns can take place so we just have to be patient with that until we can get back into the rhythm and flow.</p><p>“Sometimes you don’t want a break to come when you’re on a win streak, but this is a way to start another win streak after the break. That starts tomorrow night.”</p><p>Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving have played especially well during the win streak. Dallas’ new acquisitions Daniel Gafford and PJ Washington Jr. have also stepped up in recent action. Tim Hardaway Jr. continues to make a case for <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-media-poll-2023-24-malik-monk-tim-hardaway-jr-sixth-man-of-the-year" rel="noopener">Sixth Man of the Year</a>, and he <a href="https://twitter.com/JoeyMistretta_/status/1760450788072026423" rel="noopener">shared his thoughts</a> on how the Mavs can keep playing well after the break.</p><p>“I think we recaptured (the momentum) so far with these two practices,” Hardaway said Wednesday. “Thankfully we came out healthy. Just happy to start this thing back up. We know we got a tough stretch to start right after break. It’s going to be a great test for us.”</p><p>Thursday’s game is going to be exciting. One of the Mavs top surprises of this season that’s helped power them to a decent record has been Dante Exum. Exum signed with the Mavs as a free agent in the offseason after spending the last two seasons playing overseas in Spain. The former lottery pick had last played in the NBA during the 2020-21 season with the Cleveland Cavaliers when he suited up in only six games.</p><p>This season, Exum has emerged as one of the Mavs key role players. He’s played in 30 games so far with 14 starts. He had moved into the starting lineup prior to his injury. He had been averaging a career-high 9.3 points per game, 2.9 rebounds and 2.9 assists with splits of 57.5 percent shooting from the field, 45.2 percent shooting from the three point line and 75 percent shooting from the free throw line.</p><p>The Mavs are currently in seventh place in the Western Conference Standings at 23-16. The Mavs guard has averaged just 5.9 points per game in his career.</p><p>Exum was a role player who certainly was not known for his long-range shooting prowess. Still, he displayed signs of potential in Utah. Exum’s final season with the Jazz was during the 2019-20 campaign. He ended up joining the Cleveland Cavaliers later that season where he would play until 2021.</p><p>Exum was then traded to the Houston Rockets but did not appear in any NBA games with the team. He would end up signing a deal in the EuroLeague for the 2021-22 season. Luka Doncic was fantastic again despite <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavs-news-luka-doncic-makes-dramatic-old-admission-after-embarrassing-lakers-at-home" rel="noopener">dealing with an injury</a>, while Tim Hardaway Jr. also performed well for the Mavs. With Kyrie Irving <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavs-news-kyrie-irving-injury-update-jason-kidd" rel="noopener">out with an injury</a> of his own, however, it was Dante Exum who proved to be Dallas’ X-factor.</p><p>Exum was fantastic versus the Lakers, scoring 26 points on 8-10 shooting from the field to go along with seven three-pointers. He added four rebounds, three assists, and one steal as well. Exum’s 26 points was the second highest mark of his career in the NBA.</p><p>The Mavs guard addressed his impressive performance after the game.</p><p>“Obviously, I’m feeling great,” Exum said. “Most importantly we got the win. We got up early and they fought back. We knew it was a back-to-back, it was a game we had to fight. They were coming off their tournament win. I think it was a good fighting game, back and forth.”</p><p>The game did indeed prove to be a fight between two talented teams. LeBron James and Anthony Davis both finished with over 30 points in the contest. Meanwhile, Luka (33 points) and Hardaway (32 points) led the way for Dallas. But it was clear that Exum helped play a deciding role in the win.</p><h2><b>Dante Exum’s resilience is paying off</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/mavs-news-dante-exum-gets-real-on-big-performance-in-win-vs-blazers-2.webp"></figure><p>Exum, a 28-year-old from Australia, originally debuted in the NBA during the 2014-15 season with the Utah Jazz. An injury kept him out for the 2015-16 season, and he returned with Utah in 2016-17.</p><p>Exum was a role player who certainly was not known for his long-range shooting prowess. Still, he displayed signs of potential in Utah. Exum’s final season with the Jazz was during the 2019-20 campaign. It is just the consistency of the reps and being confident,” Exum said of his shooting improvement. “That is just something I’ve had to figure out. It’s maturity, growing up and playing. I say this to the coaches a lot. I used to miss my first shot and I started thinking.</p><p>“Now, I am confident and I have this saying if I miss my first one I am going to make the next one. That is what I try to fall back on and just keep shooting.”</p><h2><b>Exum playing big role for Mavs</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/mavs-dante-exum-proving-to-be-x-factor-after-basketball-career-was-left-for-dead-2.webp"></figure><p>Opposing teams prepare to contain Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving when both are healthy. They also focus on limiting Tim Hardaway Jr. and Dereck Lively. Exum, who is now shooting over 40 percent from deep, has made defenses pay this season when left open.</p><p>Exum was asked about the Lakers leaving him open on Tuesday.</p><p>“I think it started in L.A. And then a lot of teams started to put their 5 on me. So, ever since then I have been in the gym working. Credit to the staff and even our players. Constantly trusting me to shoot the ball and to pass it to me.</p><p>“It was trust in myself and confidence to keep shooting it. I think how Luka plays and he can find anyone at any point. Knowing guys are going to help off to double him, and I have to be ready. I try to put myself in the situation where I can be on the floor. I don’t want to be the guy that is taken out because I can’t hit that shot.”</p><p>Overall, Exum is averaging 7.4 points per game on 52.8 percent field goal and 40.5 percent three-point shooting. Defenses are not going to be able to leave him open anymore given his improved consistency.</p><p>Exum is the Mavs’ X-factor and will continue to play a big role for Dallas moving forward.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
