Atkinson is presenting change for the Cavs, and Garland gave his thoughts on new schemes during preseason.</p><p>Garland spoke about how Kenny Atkinson’s offense <a href="https://x.com/SpinDavies/status/1843332295283089469" rel="noopener">will allow</a> the Cavs to thrive during a press availability on Monday:</p><p>“I think [Atkinson’s diversifying of offensive sets] will be good for us. We have a lot of talent on this team, so different off-ball actions, different screen actions to just get defenders moving and shifting is going to help us just trying to get downhill and make plays for others. So, I think it’s going to be good just to move the ball side to side and get defenses shifted,” Garland said, per Spencer Davies.</p><p>Furthermore, Garland discussed the emphasis the Cavs are putting on three-pointers:</p><p>“Kenny’s a big three-point attempt guy. So we try to get as many threes as we can. Try to get out in transition, walk-up threes. He’s been on me and [Donovan Mitchell] about those in transition as well. Even [Max Strus] when he’s open. We can’t turn down any shots. So, threes have been a big emphasis,” Garland added.</p><p>The Cavs certainly have the personnel to make Atkinson’s visions come true. The trio of Darius Garland, Donovan Mitchell, and Mas Strus all shot 35 percent or greater on their three-point attempts during the 2023-24 season.</p><p>When it comes to screen actions, Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley will be stout presences. Fans could see the two big men extend their outside game as well.</p><p>It sounds like the Cavs have an exciting style of play in store for 2024-25. The latest person to tell <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cavs-most-important-x-factor-for-2024-25-season">Garland to increase his volume</a> during training camp is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cavs-news-land-ex-warriors-kenny-atkinson-as-next-head-coach">new Cavs head coach</a> Kenny Atkinson. Something Atkinson wants to improve is Cleveland’s 3-point volume. The Cavs <a href="https://www.nba.com/stats/teams/traditional?dir=A&amp;sort=FG3A" rel="noopener">ranked eighth in total attempts last season</a>, attempting more than 3,000 from the perimeter. But Atkinson wants that number to grow even more, with a clear message to Garland to increase his volume.</p><p>“He hasn’t really told me, but he said in the ballpark around eight or nine,” Garland said when asked if Atkinson has given him an exact number.</p><p>Last season, Garland averaged 6.2 attempts, third on the team behind Mitchell and Max Strus. This isn’t the first time a coach has urged Garland to fire more willingly. J.B. Bickerstaff did the same. Will Garland follow through this time?</p><p>“I can get that many up for sure,” Garland said. “I got enough bullets in my gun. I can’t turn down any.”</p><p>Even though this has been a talking point for a few seasons, there’s reason to believe the Cavs will be a high-volume three-point team even when they have Garland on the floor. But how will Atkinson get Garland to take more, even after it’s been a point of emphasis?</p><h2><b>Kenny Atkinson’s master plan for Darius Garland and the Cavs’ offense</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Darius-Garland-Three-Pointer-Cavs.jpg"><figcaption>Ken Blaze-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Garland said Atkinson has focused on different ways to get those shots. Garland needs to be more willing to walk into transition and pull-up 3s. There’s a plan to utilize him as a catch-and-shoot, off-ball player, flying off screens in the halfcourt. Atkinson has also pointed to the importance of corner 3s — an area where the Cavs ranked 13th in attempts, 16th in makes, and 24th in percentage last season.</p><p>“[There’s] just different ways I get to shots,” Garland said when asked how Atkinson’s offense impacts his game. “I get to a lot more threes, a lot more off-ball actions, even walk-up threes and transitions coming off screens in half-court settings. Just shooting the ones I’m pretty confident in taking. I can’t turn down any.”</p><p>If Atkinson has his way, and this offense comes together in his vision, the Cavs will rely less on the pick-and-roll and isolation attacks. It will be a more diverse offense that can lead to Garland getting more straightforward three-point attempts at a higher volume.</p><p>“It would be good for us,” Garland said. “We have a lot of talent on this team, so different off-ball actions, different screening actions to just get defenders moving and shifting the defense. It’s gonna help us just try to get downhill and make plays for others just to move the ball side to side and make the defense shift.”</p><p>Cleveland will soon wrap up Florida training camp and head home. Then, the Cavs will kick off their preseason at home against the Chicago Bulls. Garland might not play much against Chicago. However, the matchup should show everyone what to expect from Cleveland’s offense this year. According to reports, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cavs-turning-down-spurs-darius-garland-trade-offer">Garland’s representation preferred a trade for him</a> if Donovan Mitchell signed a contract extension with Cleveland this summer. The belief was that Mitchell was holding Garland back and that a change of scenery was the best avenue for Garland to reignite his breakout season and reach his full potential.</p><p>After <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cavs-news-donovan-mitchell-agrees-contract-extension">Mitchell signed a multi-year extension with the Cavs</a>, a Garland trade never followed. Cleveland President of Basketball Operations Koby Altman was emphatic that the Cavs never planned on trading Garland. However, Garland wanted to set the record straight during Cleveland’s annual media day. The All-Star guard said he wanted to remain in Cleveland regardless of what was going on with Mitchell, enough so that he had a conversation with the front office to clear the air of any outside noise saying otherwise.</p><p>“Had a talk with Koby, and he was pretty upset about it,” Garland said. “I told him that I wanted to be here, and he knows that as well, so it wasn’t a really long conversation. … I really don’t know [where the rumor came from], but it came out, and it was definitely false.”</p><h2><b>What else did Darius Garland say during Cavs media day?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Darius-Garland-dribbles-Cavs-Celtics.jpg"><figcaption>David Butler II-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The relationship between Mitchell and Garland is critical for the Cavs. The team can’t reach its ceiling if those two aren’t clicking. When asked about their fit together, Garland also shot down any concern about that.</p><p>“We’ve been together three years, and we’ve made a jump every year,” Garland said. “A lot of people don’t see what we have outside of the court. We have a real relationship off the court… that’s my brother.”</p><p>Garland was an All-Star before Mitchell arrived. But remember, Garland’s first season with Mitchell was the same statistical as his All-Star campaign. While Garland struggled mightily last year, his fit with Mitchell isn’t necessarily the reason why. A fractured jaw and a knee injury might have had more to do with it.</p><p>“I was playing catchup the entire season,” Garland said. “Being down 15 pounds going into the playoffs wasn’t the best way to go about it… I really wasn’t myself.”</p><p>With that all out of the way, Garland and the Cavs can focus on what happens on the court. Cleveland hopes for a bounce-back season from Garland, who shared with ClutchPoints that he regained his weight this offseason and is ready to ‘show off’ his new muscles. A healthy season from Garland could be all it takes to quell outside concerns about his fit with Mitchell. If you ask Garland, the vibes between him and Mitchell are immaculate. He cannot call me dad in the workplace,” LeBron said. “Once we leave the practice facility and the gates close, I could be a dad again in the car if we ride together. No, he has got to call me like ‘2-3′ or ‘Bron’ or ‘GOAT’ if he wants to. Gameplay footage is making the rounds on social media to give fans a reason to spend their hard-earned money to pick up a copy of the game. But in one such clip, Cleveland Cavaliers guard Darius Garland received the <a href="https://cavsnation.com/cavs-news-darius-garland-drops-eye-opening-take-on-where-he-ranks-among-nba-guards">short end of the stick</a>.</p><p>NBA2KLab, an account on X, formerly known as Twitter, that posts clips of the animations found in the game, tweeted out a video of what appears to be a new shot cancel feature for NBA 2K25. This feature allows shifty ballhandlers to cancel their gather to fake out defenders off their shoes. It so happened that the video the account posted showed Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young <a href="https://twitter.com/dariusgarland22/status/1828603802020413554" rel="noopener">cancelling a behind-the-back gather</a> to leave the Cavs guard in the dust for an open layup.</p><p>At the very least, Darius Garland saw the comedy in the situation. The Cavs guard quoted the post with a rebuttal that made it seem as though he couldn’t believe why he was the one chosen to be on the wrong end of a nasty play.</p><p>“Come on bro😂,” Garland wrote on his official X account.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">Come on bro😂 <a href="https://t.co/fwK4rNg1nL">https://t.co/fwK4rNg1nL</a></p><p>— Darius Garland (@dariusgarland22) <a href="https://twitter.com/dariusgarland22/status/1828603802020413554?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">August 28, 2024</a></p></blockquote><p><script async="" src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p></figure><p>It’s worth mentioning that the animation did not look smooth at all. It looked like the Hawks star already picked up his dribble before beginning another dribble — the textbook definition of a double-dribble infraction. Regardless, the Cavs fanbase on X came to Garland’s defense, saying that he won’t be victimized in real life the way he was in the NBA 2K25 clip.</p><p>“You never get cooked like that goat,” wrote @spidasworld on X.</p><p>“DG we all know u would 🔒 that bum up,” user @Cleve1andHQ added.</p><p>“Damn that’s a Carryyyyy 😭🤣 2K Refs on some trash too,” furthered @LawrenceUSI.</p><p>But beyond being torched by Trae Young on the virtual streets, the Cavs guard has a greater reason to use NBA 2K25 as fuel to bounce back following a less-than-ideal 2023-24 campaign.</p><h2>Dissecting the Cavs starting PG’s NBA 2K25 rating</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.cavsnation.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Darius-Garland-reacts-after-a-basket-.jpg"></figure><p>In what was no surprise, Darius Garland’s rating for NBA 2K25 dropped after a topsy-turvy campaign with the Cavs. Garland endured a plethora of injury woes that limited him to just 57 games, and in those games, his efficiency, relative to prior seasons, dropped along with his overall usage and touches.</p><p>Thus, 2K Sports deemed that it was best for them to give the Cavs guard a rating of 82 — a one-rating drop from his 83 in the previous NBA 2K game. This rating is a bit disappointing, however. Garland, according to 2K, is the same quality of player as Josh Hart, Alex Caruso, Jalen Suggs, and Herb Jones — players whom contending teams would love, but don’t have the All-Star pedigree and upside the Cavs guard has.</p><p>For reference, Cade Cunningham is four overall points better (86) than Garland. That may not be particularly indicative of the disparity in skill, talent, and impact between those two players.</p><p>Nevertheless, the Cavs guard, being only 24 years of age, has time to redeem himself after a down year. With a new head coach in Kenny Atkinson in town, perhaps <a href="https://cavsnation.com/cavs-news-darius-garland-drops-truth-bomb-on-trade-rumors">Garland regains his comfort</a> as he lines up alongside Donovan Mitchell in the backcourt. And if he improves in real life, then his NBA 2K25 rating should reflect that sooner than later.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

His numbers then dipped even more in the playoffs, as he logged 15.7 points a night while posting a true shooting percentage of 52.2 percent. Despite the lackluster playoff numbers, Garland tried to drag Cleveland past the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. The Cavs lost the series 4-1.</p><p>Trade speculation immediately began at the end of the 24-year-old’s disappointing season. But the Cavs have opted to keep their young guard. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cavs-turning-down-spurs-darius-garland-trade-offer">Cleveland even declined</a> a trade offer from the San Antonio Spurs, further showing their commitment to Garland.</p><p>The hope for the Cavs and Garland is that the young guard can regain his All-Star form under new head coach Kenny Atkinson. Garland registered 21.6 points per game and enjoyed the most efficient season of his career during Donovan Mitchell’s first season in Cleveland, so it’s not like Garland’s numbers fell off a cliff upon Mitchell’s arrival. Those numbers are the same as Garland put up when he was named an All-Star in 2020. Instead, the Cavs invested in what they built, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cavs-news-donovan-mitchell-agrees-contract-extension">locking up Donovan Mitchell</a> and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cavs-news-why-cleveland-224-million-evan-mobley-contract-extension-isnt-overpay">signing Evan Mobley</a> to lucrative extensions.</p><p>On the trade front, Cleveland was also sent offers for Jarrett Allen and Darius Garland. Sources tell ClutchPoints that the New Orleans Pelicans and Houston Rockets checked in on Allen’s availability. But although there’s interest, conversations didn’t go far. Meanwhile, a separate source shared that any inquiries for Garland didn’t go anywhere, with the Cavs declining most offers. However, <a href="https://sports.yahoo.com/andrew-nembhards-contract-extension-with-pacers-sets-up-another-big-payday-in-2028-153241255.html?utm_content=buffer0e6e5&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer">according to</a> Yahoo Sports’ Jake Fischer, the San Antonio Spurs pushed hard to acquire Garland.</p><p>“San Antonio called various teams around the league exploring veteran guards who have still yet to enter their primes,” said Fischer. “Cavaliers All-Star guard Darius Garland was another talented ball-handler the Spurs called about, sources said, although Cleveland has rebuffed any inbound trade interest for Garland to date.”</p><p>Although San Antonio tried their damndest to acquire Garland, eventually, the Spurs moved on to pair Chris Paul with Victor Wembanyama. From a pure trade perspective, San Antonio would never offer Cleveland Wembanyama or even Devin Vassell for Garland. That makes a possible trade a nonstarter since the Cavs would want a player who matches what Garland gives Cleveland. In reality, here’s the likely offer the Spurs sent the Cavs to acquire Garland:</p><p><b>San Antonio receives</b>: Darius Garland</p><p><b>Cleveland receives</b>: Keldon Johnson, Zach Collins, Malaki Branham, three first-round selections</p><p>While the partnership between Garland and Wembanyama would’ve been must-see TV every night, Cleveland made the right call, turning down whatever San Antonio offered them for several reasons.</p><h2><b>The Cavs turning down the Spurs was a great call</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Garland-Attacks-Spurs-Cavs.jpg"><figcaption>Scott Wachter-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>The draft picks would be nice for the Cavs, especially if they’re unprotected first-rounders, but that’s still a moot point. Unless Cleveland facilitates a trade involving those picks immediately to find star talent elsewhere, which is few and far between at this point in the offseason, then the Cavs would be taking a major step backward on the court with Garland no longer on the roster.</p><p>While that’s not meant to disrespect the trio of Johnson, Collins, and Branham,  it doesn’t have the same impact Garland provides. None of the aforementioned trio are former All-Stars like Garland. They’re also not the level of facilitator and three-point threat Garland is either. The more you break down the players’ differences, the more it becomes clear that Cleveland is better off keeping Garland.</p><p>Overall, there realistically isn’t a return the Cavs could get for Garland from the Spurs. Unless it contained a superstar, which wasn’t happening for San Antonio, Cleveland made the right decision by declining their offer. Now, the Cavs must focus on Garland bouncing back after a disastrous 2023-24 campaign under new head coach Kenny Atkinson. If that happens, the decision not to trade Garland becomes even more obvious. Especially if it leads to a deeper playoff run than last season.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He has won a basketball, a baseball, and a football championship in fantasy all within a year.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Cavs News</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The Cleveland Cavaliers have one of the most dynamic backcourt combos in the league <a href="https://cavsnation.com/cavs-news-fan-brings-donovan-mitchell-receipts-experts-predicted-trade">with the tandem</a> of Darius Garland and Donovan Mitchell, but could a breakup of that Cavs duo be on the horizon?</p><p>Rumors sprouted following the Cavs’ second-round exit from the 2024 NBA Playoffs at the hands of the Boston Celtics that Garland wanted to get traded, though, the former Vanderbilt Commodores star point guard has already <a href="https://www.cleveland.com/cavs/2024/07/those-are-just-rumors-darius-garland-doesnt-want-to-be-traded.html" rel="noopener">shut that idea down</a> with a direct statement recently (via Chris Fedor of cleveland.com).</p><p><i>“I don’t want to be traded,” Garland told cleveland.com during an exclusive interview before exiting the arena late in the fourth quarter Sunday afternoon. “Those are just rumors.”</i></p><p><i>“It’s always good to see one of our guys get the money they deserve and know he’s going to be back with us for a while,” Garland said. “I was excited. I was excited for him.”</i></p><h2><b>Darius Garland clears one distraction for the Cavs</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.cavsnation.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Cavs-center-Jarrett-Allen-31-guard-Darius-Garland-10-and-guard-Donovan-Mitchell-45-celebrate-in-the-fourth-quarter.jpg"><figcaption>© David Richard-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Getting those words from Garland gets Cavs fans breathing out a collective sigh of relief. Cleveland had had a busy start to their offseason with the Cavs parting ways with JB Bickerstaff and finding his <a href="https://cavsnation.com/cavs-news-steal-knicks-assistant-to-join-kenny-atkinson-staff">replacement</a> in the form of former Brooklyn Nets head coach Kenny Atkinson and signing Mitchell to a huge three-year, 150.32 million maximum contract extension.</p><p>With those two big boxes checked out, the Cavaliers appeared to have another issue to deal with, as the Garland rumors swirled. But that shouldn’t be the case anymore, with Garland squashing the murmurs to let Cleveland move on from it and tackle other important matters, as the franchise looks to be better in the coming 2024-25 NBA season.</p><p>The 24-year-old Garland is under the Cavs’ control until the end of the 2027-28 NBA season as he signed a five-year, $197.23 million rookie contract extension with them in 2022. If Garland went the other way and openly said that he wanted the trade, the Cavaliers could get plenty of interest from the market given his age and years of club control. His contract isn’t cheap, but there must be several teams out there willing to explore a potential trade for Garland.</p><p>That being said, Garland isn’t coming off a particularly excellent campaign with the Cavaliers. He took a significant step back from a great 2022-23 season where he posted 7.6 win shares and 2.7 value above replacement player. Last season, he only had 2.7 win shares and just 0.5 value above replacement player while averaging 18.0 points, 2.7 rebounds, 6.5 assists, and shooting just 44.6 percent from the field — his worst since his first year in the league.</p><p>If the Cavs are to go much deeper in the playoffs than they did this year, they are going to need Garland to play at a higher level. In the 2024 NBA Playoffs, he averaged just 15.7 points on 42.7 percent shooting from the floor.</p><h2><b>Social media reactions to Garland’s declaration</b></h2><p>“I think that if Darius Garland is healthy for an entire season there’s a good case to be made that he and Donovan Mitchell could be one of the top guard combos in the Eastern Conference. According to the rumor mill, the most likely recourse for Mitchell is to sign a huge <a href="https://cavsnation.com/nba-rumors-donovan-mitchells-expected-cavs-contract-plan-gets-update">contract extension with the Cavs</a> that takes him to his 10th year in the association so he could become eligible for a mammoth deal in 2027.</p><p>Keeping a player of Mitchell’s caliber on the roster is never a bad thing. Mitchell is a floor-raiser who hasn’t yet missed the playoffs for his career. The Cavs certainly would want to keep him given how many assets they gave up to acquire his services. Nonetheless, there might be an unintended consequence in the event that Mitchell re-ups with the franchise, as it may <a href="https://www.actionnetwork.com/nba/nba-free-agency-rumors-intel-latest-news-after-nba-finals" rel="noopener">end up costing them</a> Darius Garland.</p><p>“Several league sources independently noted this week that they expect Klutch Sports to prefer a trade for Garland if Mitchell is re-signed,” Matt Moore of Action Network reported.</p><p>Klutch Sports has emerged as a powerhouse agency with some major swing in the NBA. While his representatives are only looking out for what’s best for their client, as staying with the Cavs should Donovan Mitchell re-sign means that Darius Garland will continue playing second fiddle, it’s rather unlikely for Cleveland to acquiesce to their preference. After all, Garland is under contract for four more seasons, so there is no urgency for them to deal the former All-Star away.</p><p>Moore acknowledged that “rival front offices” may simply be “stirring trouble”, unsettling Garland even further amid a bit of a transition period for the Cavs after the firing of JB Bickerstaff, the coach that helped lead the team to 99 wins over the past two seasons. But it would be very remiss of the Cavs not to wait out and see how the new coach makes the Garland-Mitchell backcourt pairing work.</p><h2><b>Cavs believe in their core</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.cavsnation.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/drives-the-ball-against-Cleveland-Cavaliers-guard-Darius-Garland-10.jpg"></figure><p>Regardless of all the hullabaloo, the <a href="https://cavsnation.com/nba-rumors-cavs-not-motivated-break-up-donovan-mitchell-core" rel="noopener">Cavs’ belief</a> in their current core remains ardent. Cavs beat reporter Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com asserted in the past that it will take a monster offer to pry away any member of their core four, which includes Darius Garland.</p><p>Garland is only 24 years of age, and he has been a 21-8 guy in the past. The 2023-24 season did not go according to plan for him as he endured some injury problems as well as some turnover woes, but sharpshooting playmakers of his ilk don’t grow on trees.</p><p>Even before Donovan Mitchell arrived in Cleveland, the Cavs were already on an upward trajectory; it’s not too much of a stretch to suggest that, had they retained Lauri Markkanen, they would be in the same boat as they are today, with Garland blossoming into an even bigger star after his strong 2021-22 campaign.</p><p>It will hurt Cleveland if they <a href="https://cavsnation.com/nba-rumors-spurs-very-interested-in-cavs-darius-garland-trade" rel="noopener">deal away</a> their homegrown All-Star to a team such as the San Antonio Spurs or Orlando Magic and watch Garland blossom as the lead ball-handler for a team that is in dire need of a pull-up, playmaking threat at the point of attack. Imagine Garland running the floor alongside Victor Wembanyama and setting the table for Devin Vassell. Think about Garland orchestrating the Magic offense as he spaces the floor for Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner? Thus, it’s too early for the Cavs to give up on Darius Garland.</p><p>The goal for them now is to build a team that complements their core four perfectly. For starters, they need a lockdown 3-and-D wing in the mold of OG Anunoby; Isaac Okoro has made strides on defense, but he has a lot of ground to make up for as a shooter. Max Strus is a great weapon to have as a shooter who can fire on the move, but is he really the answer at the three?</p><p>The Cavs can cobble together the salaries of a few of their players, primarily Caris LeVert, to perhaps get another piece who could help push the team forward. They need more size on the wing to compensate for their undersized backcourt, and they need someone who can make plays on the move and come up huge on the defensive end.</p><p>It’s unclear which specific player fits that bill. Bruce Brown will be available for trade and could be of help, but he doesn’t have the most size on the wing. De’Andre Hunter has the size, but he is very inconsistent. His huge salary that runs for a few more years will not be the easiest contract to swallow as well.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Moments after Cleveland’s season ended, it became publicly known that Garland would look for a trade if the Cavs could re-sign Donovan Mitchell this summer.</p><p>While Cavs President of Basketball Operations Koby Altman has made it clear that he doesn’t see any wholesale change coming to Cleveland’s roster, and league sources have shared that the Cavs aren’t actively looking to trade Garland, the supposed trade demand still hasn’t been retracted. Sources tell ClutchPoints that if Cleveland does entertain the notion of trading Garland, especially if there’s a public demand, the San Antonio Spurs, the Orlando Magic, the Minnesota Timberwolves, and the Utah Jazz will quickly swoop in to make the Cavs an offer.</p><p>While all the aforementioned teams make sense for Garland, the Spurs stand above the rest as his best possible basketball fit. Pairing Garland next to superstar big man Victor Wembanyama would be lethal on the court. Moreover, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/2024-nba-mock-draft-3-5-trades-shake-up-first-round">based on a recent mock draft by ClutchPoints</a>, on the night of the 2024 NBA Draft, San Antonio could make an offer that Cleveland could consider.</p><h2><b>What could Spurs offer Cavs for Darius Garland?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Garland-Drives-At-Wemby.jpg"><figcaption>Scott Wachter-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>In a shocking draft night move, here’s what the hypothetical trade proposes in a three-team deal between Cleveland, San Antonio and the Toronto Raptors:</p><p><b>Cleveland gets: </b>Keldon Johnson, Tre Jones, the No. 8 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, the No. 35 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft</p><p><b>San Antonio gets: </b>Darius Garland, Chris Boucher, the No. 20 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft</p><p><b>Toronto gets: </b>Devonte Graham, 2025 second-round pick (via Cleveland)</p><h2><b>Spurs would likely win this hypothetical trade</b></h2><p>Overall, the Spurs would walk away from this trade the biggest winner since no player they can select with the No. 8 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft would ever have the immediate on-court impact that Garland could. San Antonio would also still have two selections on draft night, which in this mock draft has them taking Nikola Topic and Tidjane Salaun through several other draft night maneuvers.</p><p>For the Spurs to be able to walk away with a franchise point guard and two high-upside international prospects, it may seem like San Antonio may have robbed the ferry in Blackwater rather than the Van der Linde gang. Sure, the Cavs get a high-upside role player in Johnson and a reliable backup point guard in Jones to bolster their rotation in this hypothetical trade. But what really matters in grading this trade is what Cleveland does with the two picks they acquire from San Antonio.</p><p>In this mock draft, the Cavs take Colorado forward Cody Williams with the No. 8 pick, implying that Cleveland is banking on his upside. Sure, Williams is someone they have had their eyes on during the pre-draft process. He brings toughness and adds depth on the wing, but he is still a raw player who will need to develop further, likely in the G League, to unlock his two-way potential. But considering that the Cavs can’t afford to move a franchise cornerstone for a development project like Williams, perhaps they could expand this three-team trade into a larger deal and acquire the star power needed to mitigate the loss of Garland.</p><p>Perhaps Cleveland could expand and facilitate a sign-and-trade to acquire Paul George from the Los Angeles Clippers. Or maybe the Cavs call up the Washington Wizards and gauge the availability of a package centered around Kyle Kuzma. The same mindset can be had when it comes to the New Orleans Pelicans and Brandon Ingram, the Timberwolves and Jalen McDaniels, or the Magic and Franz Wagner.</p><p>Sure, players like McDaniels and Wagner aren’t readily available, and their respective teams will need a generous offer to consider trading them. Regardless, that should be the Cavs’ mindset in a hypothetical trade like this. Similarly to chess, it isn’t the initial return that Cleveland gets for Garland that matters. Instead, what matters more is what the Cavs do with the assets they obtain to find a star to pair with Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley.</p><p>Finally, the Raptors are happy to be involved in this deal and receive draft compensation for a big man who is not part of their future plans.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Trades are inevitable. And when they occur, the ramifications are wide-ranging. While the Cavs are signaling they won’t trade Darius Garland, in this scenario Garland finds himself joining Victor Wembanyama at the cost of the Nos. 8 and 35 picks in this year’s draft, as well as Keldon Johnson, Tre Jones, and Devonte’ Graham, who is re-routed to Toronto.”</p><p>Slotted to also have the fourth overall pick, the Spurs would’ve also traded that selection in Siegel’s prediction. In this deal, San Antonio would land a proven point guard who’s just 24 years old and has already made an All-Star game. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-spurs-linked-to-darius-garland-trade-pursuit">Garland has twice averaged more than 21 and half points per game</a> a season. They’d get him without having to give up either Devin Vassell or Jeremy Sochan. Himself just 23 years old, Vassell has had two seasons in which he’s averaged 18.5 and 19.5 PPG. Though San Antonio played better when he started, Jones fits best as a backup point guard. With his departure, one of the Spurs’ three first-round picks in 2022, Blake Wesley, could get more playing time. The Notre Dame product played well for a good portion of this past season. Devonte’ Graham wasn’t part of Gregg Popovich’s rotation last season and there’s little reason to think that would change as the team looks to add talent.</p><p>In other draft day moves, Siegel has the Black and Silver still drafting Serbian point guard Nikola Topic and French forward Tidjane Salaun through a series of related trades. ClutchPoints wrote earlier about how the Spurs taking Salaun with a top-ten pick may be risky because he’s raw. The pressure to hit on a now 14th pick would be alleviated with Garland in the mix, not to mention Topic appears to be the type of prospect who can help from day one. They also would’ve added the Chicago Bulls 2027 first-round pick (top 5-protected) and the Bulls 2029 second-round pick.</p><p>They would’ve achieved all of this while parting with their two second-round picks this year, the Atlanta Hawks 2025 unprotected first-round selection (obtained in a 2022 Dejounte Murray trade) and two 2026 second-round picks, one of theirs and a selection from the Utah Jazz they would’ve also acquired in Brett Siegel’s hypothetical.</p><p><b>Grade: A</b></p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

However, Cavs GM Koby Altman allegedly cleared rumors in a conversation with a renowned NBA analyst.</p><p>James Borrego is one of the candidates to fill the Cavs’ head coaching vacancy. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst <a href="https://x.com/realcavsfans/status/1800553246047752627" rel="noopener">reportedly provided insight</a> on Borrego, saying he can be an effective coach with a lineup of multi-talented guards. The guards Borrego could use on the Cavs would be Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland, the latter of which is believed to be a trade target for other teams.</p><p>Rumors suggest that Cavs GM Koby Altman is telling Cleveland coaching candidates they are not interested in trading Garland, per Windhorst. Keeping Garland alongside Mitchell could entice James Borrego. Of course, Borrego’s abilities are subject to examination.</p><p>Borrego served as a head coach for the Charlotte Hornets from 2018 to 2022 before the team dismissed him. Windhorst acknowledged that the former Hornets coach’s defensive strategies can be questionable, but there is no doubt about his offense. Borrego could be the coach that gets the best out of the Mitchell-Garland duo.</p><p>Still, Borrego faces tough competition for the job. Kenny Atkinson is another candidate who has piqued the Cavs’ interest.</p><p>Atkinson serves as an assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors. One of his most notable experiences is his head coaching tenure with the Brooklyn Nets from 2016 to 2020. Atkinson was instrumental in transforming the Nets from a poor-performing team to a respectable playoff squad. The star guard averaged 18.0 points, 6.5 assists, and 1.3 steals in 57 games. Furthermore, Garland did not perform up to the standard some fans expected him to in the playoffs. Early indication is that the Cavs are looking to sign their leading scorer to a new deal.</p><p>A 2022 All-Star, Garland is coming off a year in which he averaged 18 points per game over 57 contests. Those point totals have been eclipsed with Mitchell on board over the last two years and while the team’s President Kolby Altman has indicated the Cavaliers would like to keep both, Rich Paul’s reported comment would suggest that might not happen. Enter the Spurs.</p><p>With two picks in the Top 10 of this month’s draft, multiple selections through the rest of the decade and with young talent on the roster now, San Antonio can put together an intriguing offer for a Cleveland squad that could pick up a piece or two or three to team with Mitchell, Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley. He’s set to make $36.7 million in 2024-2025 with the deal increasing by just shy of three million per season for the life of the contract. It’s a good thing the 6-foot-1 point guard is still only 24 years old.</p><p>The Cavs second leading scorer averaged 6.5 assists and 2.7 rebounds in addition to those 18 points per game last season. They’re numbers that would give the Spurs a player who can both set up Wemby as well as provide another consistent scoring option. Keep in mind, Devin Vassell, who averaged nearly 20 points per outing last season, is also in the fold.</p><p>Garland shot 44.6% from the field, meaning he’d keep defenses honest as they keep an eye on the reigning Rookie of the Year. His 37.1% shooting percentage from beyond the arc would provide a much needed three-point threat among top rotational players. San Antonio’s best shooters recently have been specialists.</p><p>It stands to reason that San Antonio would have an interest in Garland. The Cavs are looking to keep Donovan Mitchell for the long haul, and it looks like all their major team decisions will be made with the intention of convincing him to re-up in Cleveland. And in the event that Mitchell commits his long-term future to the Cavs, Darius Garland could very well see himself being on the move, as he’ll be relegated even further to second-fiddle duties should he remain <a href="https://cavsnation.com/nba-rumors-what-frustrated-donovan-mitchell-cavs-teammates" rel="noopener">partnered with Mitchell</a> in the backcourt for the foreseeable future.</p><p>Thus, expect trade rumors involving Garland to remain prominent through this offseason as well as the next few years if the Cavs do decide to keep the 24-year old point guard in town for the 2024-25 season. The Cavs may have missed the playoffs after a rough end to that campaign, but Garland still averaged 21.7 points and 8.6 assists across 68 games, and there was plenty of reason to expect that he could soon bump those numbers up even further.</p><p>However, the Cavs brought Donovan Mitchell in in 2023; while Cleveland improved and made it to the playoffs, as a top-half seed, no less, it cast Garland aside and forced him to play second-fiddle. He averaged 21.6 points and 7.8 assists in 2023, which were still great numbers, but Mitchell’s arrival meant fewer touches for someone the franchise once viewed as its cornerstone.</p><p>Darius Garland’s usage dropped even further this past season, and he never really got any sort of rhythm going. Due to a myriad of injuries, Garland put up a season that was more in line with his sophomore campaign. Now, his second season in the league wasn’t exactly bad, but that meant that instead of improving, he was stagnating. Garland also had his fair share of efficiency and turnover problems, and in the postseason, those troubles continued to plague him.</p><p>Garland’s <a href="https://www.spotrac.com/nba/player/_/id/31562/darius-garland" rel="noopener">huge contract</a> kicked in at the start of the 2023-24 season, which meant that a decline in production was always going to be disappointing. The Cavs are now pondering whether or not it would be worth it to tie up a considerable amount of cap space to an undersized, if talented, backcourt, as Donovan Mitchell is due for a huge extension soon.</p><p>But with some changes coming the Cavs’ way, it may be best for them not to jump the gun and wait for the dust to settle on other pressing matters before deciding on a course of action regarding Garland’s future.</p><h2><b>Cavs’ head coaching search continues</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.cavsnation.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/J.B.-Bickerstaff-coaching-during-the-Cavs-Game-7-win-over-the-Magic.jpg"></figure><p>The Cavs, despite winning 99 games combined over the past two seasons, even making it to the second round of the playoffs in 2024, decided to go in another direction after relieving JB Bickerstaff of his head coaching duties.</p><p>The main candidates to fill the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cavs-head-coach-candidates-micah-nori" rel="noopener">Cavs’ coaching vacancy</a> are Kenny Atkinson and James Borrego, while they are also eyeing assistant coaches who have been performing well, such as Minnesota Timberwolves’ Micah Nori, New York Knicks’ Johnnie Bryant, and Miami Heat’s Chris Quinn.</p><p>Perhaps a new coach could reinvigorate Darius Garland’s career and get him back to his All-Star trajectory. They’ve already let go of their head coach JB Bickerstaff and the changes may not stop there. Retaining and re-signing Donovan Mitchell is the utmost priority for Cleveland. However, keeping Mitchell may lead to collateral damage elsewhere on the roster. That could entail potentially trading fellow All-Star guard Darius Garland. The Minnesota Timberwolves could be a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cavs-news-donovan-mitchell-trade-conversations-offseason-playoff-loss-celtics">potential landing spot</a> for Garland if the Cavaliers look to trade him according to ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel.</p><p>Siegel reported that the Timberwolves have long been fans of Garland dating back to the 2019 NBA Draft. Minnesota was said to have tried to move up to get Darius Garland, but couldn’t get make a deal happen. They wound up with Jarrett Culver instead, who is out of the league entirely. A robust offer could finally see Minnesota land their guy. What would that offer look like?</p><h2>Trade Offer</h2><p>Minnesota trades Karl-Anthony Towns and a 2024 second-round pick (37th overall). Cleveland, in return, sends Darius Garland, Georges Niang, Ty Jerome, a 2024 1st-round pick (20th overall), and three future second-round picks (2025, 2027, and 2029).</p><h2>Why the Timberwolves do it</h2><p>Minnesota has to find a point guard of the future. Mike Conley has been a godsend for that franchise ever since they flipped D’Angelo Russell for him and Nickeil Alexander-Walker. However, he’s getting up there in age. Conley will turn 37 years old by the time next season starts.</p><p>The Timberwolves have gotten solid production from the wily veteran, but they need more scoring and playmaking pop out of him. Anthony Edwards was bombarded with help and double teams by opposing defenses because they knew Minnesota wasn’t going to have much creation elsewhere on the perimeter. Conley had a <a href="https://www.nba.com/stats/players/advanced?CF=MIN*GE*10&amp;TeamID=1610612750&amp;dir=-1&amp;sort=USG_PCT">usage rate of 16.5%</a> and a <a href="https://www.nba.com/stats/players/advanced?CF=MIN*GE*10&amp;TeamID=1610612750&amp;dir=A&amp;sort=EFG_PCT">53.1% effective field goal percentage</a> during the playoffs according to NBA.com. It’s fine, but not good enough.</p><p>Minnesota needs a guard who can not only feed Edwards easy buckets but can also create his own shots. Garland is that in spades and is only 24. He’d be a great fit. Unfortunately for Minnesota, it would cost them Karl-Anthony Towns, who has seen it all during his nine seasons with the Wolves.</p><p>Towns may just be <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/timberwolves-most-blame-disappointing-playoff-loss-mavericks">too erratic to count on</a> in the playoffs. His play fluctuates too rapidly between series, games, and even possessions within a game. Minnesota doesn’t need to ride that rollercoaster when they already have Naz Reid in tow. Reid is not the passer or shooter that Towns is, but he can replicate a lot of his production with his versatile skillset. He was the sixth man of the year this season, after all.</p><p>Minnesota built their team with an identity of being huge everywhere on the court. They’d still retain that identity even if they trade a big part of it in Towns. But the upgrade from Conley to Garland, who struggled in his own right this year after a season plagued by injury, would be worth it.</p><h2>Why the Cavs do it</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Darius-Garland-drives-against-Jrue-Holiday.jpg"><figcaption>Mandatory Credit: David Butler II-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Cleveland pictured a dynamic backcourt who could take turns hurling shots over opponents and setting each other up when they paired Mitchell with Garland. That hasn’t quite happened in the postseason yet. A year ago, the Cavs had a <a href="https://cleaningtheglass.com/stats/team/6/lineups?season=2022&amp;on=4576&amp;on=4362&amp;seasontype=playoffs#tab-four_factors">-3.8 net rating</a> when those two shared the floor in the 2023 playoffs. That number <a href="https://cleaningtheglass.com/stats/team/6/lineups?season=2023&amp;on=4576&amp;on=4362&amp;seasontype=playoffs#tab-four_factors">didn’t budge this year</a> either.</p><p>The New York Knicks really exploited Cleveland’s lack of size on the perimeter last year. That trend continued this year when the Cavs played bigger teams in the Orlando Magic and Boston Celtics. The Cavs could flip big man Jarrett Allen for a bigger wing or guard to pair next to Mitchell and Max Strus and then trot out a frontcourt with Towns and Evan Mobley.</p><p>That would make a lot of sense for the Cavaliers. Mobley was a breakout star in the playoffs with his rim protection at center after Allen’s rib injury along with his added scoring punch. Towns can help the team on the glass after they were in the <a href="https://www.nba.com/stats/teams/advanced?SeasonType=Regular%20Season&amp;dir=A&amp;sort=REB_PCT">middle of the league</a> in that department in the 2023-24 NBA season. He and Mitchell can also provide a deadly two-man game offensively.</p><p>Swapping Towns for Darius Garland would give both the Cavaliers and Timberwolves a solution for what ails their team without compromising the rest of their rosters. This trade would help both franchises.
