This is because the past year was one of the most successful in team history and Kings fans couldn’t be more proud of their team.</p><p>What the Kings achieved as an organization during the 2022-23 season will forever live in team lore, as they finally snapped what had become a 16-season playoff drought and they have very quickly <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/deaaron-fox-kings-playoffs-exit-vs-warriors-draws-painful-take-from-gm" rel="noopener">put themselves on notice</a> as one of the better teams in the league. In fact, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kings-news-deaaron-foxs-sobering-7-word-take-on-crushing-loss-to-steph-curry-warriors" rel="noopener">inexperience</a> may have been the only thing holding them back from taking down the defending NBA champions in this playoff series!</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kings-news-mike-brown-wins-coach-of-the-year-award-after-snapping-16-year-playoff-drought" rel="noopener">Mike Brown</a> did a fantastic job in his first season as the head coach of the franchise, Domantas Sabonis has continued to solidify himself as one of the best big men in the entire league and the leap De’Aaron Fox made during his sixth NBA season was vast. Fox has rapidly gone from a young player raising eyebrows to being a household name across the basketball world.</p><p>Now, he may be ready to fully take that next step towards stardom with the Kings, as the All-Star and All-NBA guard could put his name in the running for one of the league’s top awards. Sacramento knows what their star guard is <a href="https://youtu.be/EbT5oQPvmCU" rel="noopener">capable of</a> and having to face him every day in practice, third-year guard Davion Mitchell knows that Fox can take home the league’s Most Valuable Player award.</p><p>“Man, De’Aaron. I seen something like he was a top-five MVP candidate. I think it’s definitely true,” Mitchell said on the Deuce and Mo podcast. “He’s running the team, he’s talking more… He’s being a leader. We already know what he can do on the floor, he’s playing defense more, he’s guarding the best players, he’s doing that type of stuff. And when you got a player like that at that level, playing a lot of minutes, a young player, I think we’re going to be tough to beat.”</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>This offseason, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kings-news-monte-mcnair-no-major-upgrades-offseason" rel="noopener">Kings retained</a> their entire core group, which is made up of a ton of youthful, growing talents. Well at least his shooting coach, Brandon Payne, as Payne is helping Mitchell become more comfortable with the mental aspects of being a consistent outside threat.</p><p>Revealing that improving his jump shot has been his focus every year, Mitchell tells the Deuce and Mo podcast that the day after the Kings were eliminated from the 2023 NBA Playoffs, he decided he needed to seek out the best 3-point threats in the NBA.</p><p>“If I was a better shooter,” Mitchell says, “I would have been on the floor more, you know what I’m sayin’? One might even say that descriptive fits 25-year-old team leader De’Aaron Fox, the NBA’s inaugural <a href="https://www.nba.com/news/2022-23-kia-nba-clutch-player-of-the-year" rel="noopener">Clutch Player of the Year</a> in 2022-23 after leading the league with 194 points ‘in the last five minutes of the fourth quarter or overtime when the score is within five points.’</p><p>Even with their youth, the Kings were nearly able to take down the mighty Golden State Warriors in <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/playoffs/2023-nba-western-conference-first-round-warriors-vs-kings.html" rel="noopener">the first round</a> of the 2023 NBA Playoffs. Despite the Warriors no longer being as dominant as they were in the late 2010s, when their dynasty was at its peak, they’re still a formidable opponent for anyone. Fox, along with 2022-23 Sixth Man of the Year finalist Malik Monk and 2022-23 third team All-NBA selection Domantas Sabonis, led the charge for Sacramento during their 3-4 loss to the Warriors.</p><p>However, because they were unable to corral a two-time NBA MVP in Curry, their efforts were wasted. Forget about the injuries sustained by Fox and Sabonis, which were significant in their impact, but factors that were out of their control. For all of his greatness, Curry scoring 33.7 points per game on 48.8 percent shooting from the field and 37.8 percent shooting from 3 was in their control.</p><p>To that point, there’s a feeling that if Davion Mitchell becomes a legitimate 3-point threat, a series like that won’t have slipped out of their hands. A high-level athlete with great anticipatory skills on the defensive end, Mitchell is exactly the type of player that can throw Curry off of his game.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

However, it was his defensive job and hounding of Warriors star Steph Curry that was most impactful.</p><p>Curry scored a game-high 28 points but struggled from beyond the arc, scoring just three of his 13 attempts in addition to bagging just 15 points over the first three quarters.</p><p>Mitchell also came up clutch with a corner three to put the score at 112-103 with just over a minute remaining in the game to all but seal the win. And for Fox, Mitchell was <a href="https://www.sacbee.com/sports/nba/sacramento-kings/article274430990.html" rel="noopener">simply ‘big time’</a> for the Kings.</p><p>“He was big time for us,” Fox said of Mitchell. “We all know what he can do defensively. He handled Steph most of the game, and then what he did offensively was huge, like the big 3 in the corner. Honestly, I would say that was the nail in the coffin.”</p><p>Fox praised Mitchell further when talking of their practice meetings, essentially crediting the 24-year-old for making him the player that he is today.</p><p>“I go against (Mitchell) every day and that’s why you’ll see what I do out here because I’m not going against Davion out here,” Fox added. “He’s made me a better player since he’s been here. Obviously, he has the nickname of ‘Off Night’, but I don’t think people realize how he moves laterally and how strong he actually is.</p><p>“He’s made me a much better player.”</p><p>The Kings can take a huge step in progressing to the next round if they can manage a road win against the Warriors. He suited up in 75 games for the Kings, including 19 starts, in a little over 27 minutes per game. He averaged 11.5 points per game, 4.2 assists and 2.2 rebounds while shooting just over 41 percent from the field.</p><p>Mitchell’s numbers weren’t enough to place him in the Rookie of the Year race, but they were good enough to place top-10 among all rookies. His major impact came on the defensive end. As a rookie, Davion Mitchell earned the nickname, ‘Off Night’ due to his impact when guarding opposing players.</p><p>According to NBA.com’s advanced stats, Mitchell finished second on the Sacramento Kings in defensive win shares with 0.073.</p><p>The young point guard still has a lot of room to grow and the Kings cleared space for more playing time for Mitchell when the dealt Tyrese Haliburton to the Indiana Pacers. The Kings clearly see him as an integral part of their future and picking up his team option was pretty much a no-brainer.</p><p>Davion Mitchell will now try and build on his solid rookie season and become one of the top young guards in the NBA.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

From the beginning and now approaching the end, Mitchell has done nothing but improve as he looks to be a legitimate franchise cornerstone alongside De’Aaron Fox. His hard work and dedication led him to this big night individually in the Kings’ final home game of the season.</p><p>“It makes you feel good, just to make history,” Mitchell said about his 17 assists. “But at the end of the day, we lost the game, so it really doesn’t mean too much to me.”</p><p>Mitchell is as focused as rookies get. Individual accolades are cool to him, but his main goal is to make Sacramento proud and win games. That means helping his team get better and making it to the playoffs to break the NBA’s longest postseason drought.</p><p>Mitchell is a 6-foot guard with a 7-footer’s heart and toughness. He’s a young player who only cares about winning, and that’s exactly what the Kings needed out of the 2021 draft. Definitely.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Editorials</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The Sacramento Kings shocked the basketball world last February when they decided to pull the trigger on a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pacers-news-did-tyrese-haliburton-just-take-a-shot-at-kings-after-indiana-trade/">blockbuster dea</a>l sending the highly-touted Tyrese Haliburton to the Indiana Pacers in exchange for Domantas Sabonis. The general belief was that Haliburton was part of Sacramento’s young core and that he would be around for a long time. Well, as we all learned in jaw-dropping fashion, this just was not the case.</p><p>Kings rookie Davion Mitchell appears to have some insight with regard to the Haliburton trade. The 23-year-old recently talked about how he fits in with Sacramento amid what has been an eye-opening debut campaign for him. Apparently, Mitchell already had a sense early on that either he, De’Aaron Fox, or Haliburton was eventually going to get traded:</p><blockquote>“At first, you look at it when you get to the draft, they drafted you because they think it can happen,” Mitchell said, via <a href="https://www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/kings/davion-mitchell-believes-one-kings-three-point-guards-had-be-traded">Ali Thanwalla of NBC Sports</a>. “Throughout the season, I think all of us are guys who kind of need the ball to impact the game. For me, it’s a defensive thing too. But at the offensive end, I’m not a guy who can run off pin-downs and spot up and shoot, it’s more off ball-screens, just like De’Aaron Fox, just like Tyrese Haliburton.</blockquote><blockquote>“But you got to think there’s only one ball out there and none of us are really guys who catch and shoot. Tyrese can and De’Aaron can from time to time but it’s not what we’re comfortable doing. So I think at some point, you had to realize one of us got to go, just because we’ve got to get something else, a guy who can score … also make plays but not ball-dominant like us three guards are.”</blockquote><p>Mithcell makes a lot of sense here. There are a lot of similarities between the games of these three young guards and apparently, it was Haliburton that turned out to be the odd man out. Now with the benefit of hindsight, this could provide some insight as to why the Kings drafted Mitchell in the first place. They knew what Mitchell brought to the table as well as the similarity of his game with that of Haliburton and Fox. Perhaps Sacramento knew all along that they were going to trade Haliburton?</p><p>Now that Tyrese is out of the picture, it’s Fox and Mitchell who are expected to be the core of the Kings’ backcourt of the future. Interim head coach Alvin Gentry talked about how these two players have gotten along so well. Fox is just 24 but he’s already playing the role of a mentor for Mitchell:</p><blockquote>“It’s been great,” Gentry said. “De’Aaron’s been around the whole time. Obviously, he’s not playing right now but he’s still an integral part of what we’re doing because I think those guys understand the type of player he is and he’s willing to try to help and try to help these guys grow and I think that’s really important.”</blockquote><p>Gentry had nothing but high praise for Davion Mitchell who’s shown a work ethic that is second to none. As a matter of fact, the 67-year-old shot-caller believes that the young rookie is pushing himself too hard at times:</p><blockquote>“Like I said, everybody gets up here and says ‘He’s the hardest worker I ever coached,'” Gentry said. “He is the hardest worker that I have ever coached and you almost have to protect him from himself because he’ll be there every day before practice, every day after practice and come back at night. He’s got to learn to come some of it off because of the minutes that he’s playing.”</blockquote><p>This can only be a good thing, right? There have been some ups and downs throughout Mitchell’s rookie season, but all in all, coach Gentry is more than happy with his development:</p><blockquote>“Davion’s been put in a situation where he has become our primary ballhandler for 35 to 43 minutes a game, and so I think he has had his growing pains but he’s also been in a situation where he has to make decisions and things like that,” Gentry said. “The way you grow in this league is you go through those, you’re successful in some and you fail in some areas. But as long as you’re learning, which I think Davion has done a great job with that.”</blockquote><p>It has been another forgettable year for Sacramento but what you cannot deny is that the future is bright for this franchise.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

After canceling practice on Thursday and seeing several of its player enter the league’s health and safety protocols, the team suffered another blow with Davion Mitchell joining the list.</p><p>According to <a href="https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1471961460502933505" rel="noopener">Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN</a>, the Kings rookie has been ruled out for Friday’s game against the Memphis Grizzlies after entering the COVID-19 protocols.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">Sacramento guard Davion Mitchell has entered Covid protocols, sources tell ESPN. Interim coach Alvin Gentry and big man Marvin Bagley were the first ones to enter the protocol, with the likes of De’Aaron Fox, Alex Len and Louis King following soon after.</p><p>Given the circumstances and the huge absences, it is quite surprising the league hasn’t decided yet on suspending the game.</p><p>For what it’s worth, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bulls-news-nba-postpones-chicago-games-vs-pistons-raptors-amid-covid-19-outbreak/" rel="noopener">NBA recently postponed</a> the Chicago Bulls’ games against the Detroit Pistons and Toronto Raptors because of the same issue. The Bulls barely reached the minimum of eight players–with Alex Caruso just returning from injury–so the league eventually decided to just reschedule the contests.</p><p>While the Kings still have plenty of players available, the team actually fears there might be more to come given the outbreak.</p><p>Hopefully, though, that won’t be the case and the other players remain safe. A lot of teams have been dealing with COVID-19 issues of their own, and it could certainly become troublesome for the whole NBA.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The surprising points came from Mitchell, who is just three games into his career. He has already developed a reputation for his defense around the NBA. He surprisingly scored 22 points, while Curry had a game-high mark of 27.</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>Intense defense is what Curry was expecting, but the scoring ability caught the Warriors star off guard. He even jokingly called Mitchell an “offensive assassin” during his postgame interview.</p><p>Mitchell fearlessly guarded Curry, but at the end of the day, the two-time MVP got the last laugh. He didn’t have the best shooting night, but it wasn’t an off night caused by Mitchell. Curry got a lot of clean looks at the basket and just missed some good shots. Unsurprisingly, it’s Sacramento Kings rookie Davion Mitchell.</p><p>Probably motivated to prove who is the better D. Anyone can write DV Mitchell and people will get confused who’s who.</p><p>Anyway, it’s certainly interesting to see the two play against each other. While they share the same surname and initials, their plays couldn’t be any different. Everyone knows Donovan is an explosive scorer who has drawn comparisons with Dwyane Wade, while the Kings newcomer is more of a defensive specialist known for his defense.</p><p>Hopefully, though, we see more of Davion guarding Donovan and the other way around. Like, in the league right now, he’s top-five, I’d say, on-ball defenders in the league right now and when you watch him, it’s just amazing.”</blockquote><p>Fox’s statement saying that Mitchell is a top-five on-ball defender, can be considered as a wild proclamation, given that he has not played his first NBA regular-season game.</p><p>However, the 23-year old’s collegiate accolades and on-court experience speak volumes about what type of player he can be, after notably winning the Naismith Men’s Defensive Player of the Year Award.</p><p>The Kings have not made the playoffs since the 2005-2006 season, making fans <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/is-this-the-year-the-sacramento-kings-end-the-playoff-drought/">desperate for change</a> and progress within the organization.</p><p>Despite Fox averaging 25.2 points to go with 7.2 assists a game last season, his team ended up finishing 12th overall in the standings. He's written for the Orange County Register, LA Daily News and Martinez Tribune.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/sacramento-kings">Sacramento Kings</a> star De’Aaron Fox spoke highly of rookie guard Davion Mitchell to the media recently, praising the former Baylor star for his two-way ability.</p><p>“He’s good at anticipating things, he’s quick, strong, and then offensively, it goes both ways for him, he uses his strength and his quickness on both sides of the ball, he just has really good instincts,” Fox said, per <a href="https://www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/kings/davion-mitchells-infectious-winning-ways-already-impacting-kings?cid=Yahoo&amp;partner=ya4nbcs">NBC Sports’ Josh Schrock.</a></p><p>Another Kings guard also piped up to praise Mitchell. Tyrese Haliburton, who finished third in Rookie of the Year voting last season, pointed out Mitchell’s obsessive work ethic.</p><p>“I think my biggest takeaway is just how hard he works,” Haliburton said of Mitchell. “I’m sure you guys have seen an article or read or whatever that they had to tell him that he can’t be in [the Kings’ wokout facility]. But he really is here all the time, he lives here it seems like.”</p><p>These are quite the compliments, particularly when considering Mitchell is fighting to potentially steal the starting job of one of these guards. He’ll no-doubt come off the bench to start the season, and he has a long way to go if he hopes to supplant Haliburton (Fox is essentially out of the question, as he was a borderline All-Star last season). Even so, if his stellar Summer League performance means anything (he was named Co-MVP), he has a legit shot down the line. For me, just being myself on the court. I heard the past few years we have not been that good defensively, so if we turn that around, we can win more games and we can easily get to the playoffs.”</blockquote><p>The Kings lottery pick definitely put it nicely as the team ranked as the worst team in the NBA defensively last season. They placed 30th out of 30 in defensive rating at 116.5, the only team to even hit the 116 mark.</p><p>That’s probably part of the reason why the Kings selected Davion Mitchell. He’s a proven winner given that he led his Baylor Bears to the NCAA championship last March. He’s also a tenacious defender who can up the ante on any backcourt opponent.</p><p>The Sacramento Kings aren’t expected to make the playoffs by most outlets. In the 2021 NCAA Tournament, numerous players took full advantage of the opportunity to shine on the biggest stage in college basketball, including Davion Mitchell out of Baylor.</p><p>Not many viewed Davion Mitchell as a possible top-20 pick for the 2021 NBA Draft at the start of the season, but this all changed following his heroics in helping the Baylor Bears capture their first NCAA Tournament title in school history.</p><p>Davion Mitchell had plenty of standout performances over the tournament, which included a 15 points and five assists showing in the final against heavy favorites Gonzaga.</p><p>Now, all signs point to Davion Mitchell likely being a top 15 pick in the upcoming NBA Draft. Many teams are certainly viable fits for the standout guard, but these two teams would be the best destinations for him.</p><h2><b>Davion Mitchell team fits: </b></h2><h2><b>Golden State Warriors</b></h2><p>At the moment, it is not fully known just what the Golden State Warriors plan to do come draft night. The Warriors will <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/golden-state-warriors" rel="noopener">have</a> two first-round picks in the upcoming draft with the No. 7 and No. 14 overall selections. They certainly will have a plethora of options to improve their team, from moving up in the draft to trading both picks in a package for an established veteran.</p><p>If the Warriors do go on to use the No. 7 pick, all signs point to the team selecting Davion Mitchell. The Warriors reportedly <a href="https://www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/warriors/nba-rumors-prospect-davion-mitchell-work-out-warriors" rel="noopener">worked</a> out Mitchell on Thursday and as one recent report <a href="https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10007913-warriors-rumors-front-office-split-on-davion-mitchells-ceiling-as-nba-player" rel="noopener">noted</a>, there are some within the front office that are advocating for the team to select the promising guard.</p><p>Mitchell is deemed among the more NBA-ready prospects in this draft, which would bode well for a Warriors team that will be looking to return to the playoffs this upcoming season.</p><p>From his tenacity as an on-ball defender to his vertical quickness, Mitchell has the tools to come into a team like the Warriors and make an immediate impact right out the gate.</p><p>More so, Mitchell showed tremendous improvements with his 3-point shooting this past season; he shot 44.7 percent from beyond the arc, which was up from his 32.4 percent figure in the previous season.</p><p>Davion Mitchell may not be slated to earn starting minutes with the Warriors next season should they draft him, especially as Klay Thompson may be a full-go by the opening half of the season. Still, the Warriors sure have longed for an impact guard off the bench, and Mitchell surely fits the bill here.</p><h2><b>New Orleans Pelicans</b></h2><p>The New Orleans Pelicans were among the more disappointing teams in the NBA this past season. Many projected that with Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram leading the way, they would comfortably clinch a playoff spot. However, this did not pan out, as the Pelicans finished 11th in the final Western Conference standings.</p><p>Much of what held the Pelicans back this past season revolved around their putrid on-ball defense. The Pelicans’ defensive struggles continued as they allowed 114.9 points per game in the regular season, which ranked 24th in the NBA.</p><p>In the case that teams such as the Warriors and Magic elect to pass on Davion Mitchell, the Pelicans would certainly be an ideal fit for him.</p><p>For one, the Pelicans may be on the verge of a notable backcourt overhaul, as Lonzo Ball and Josh Hart will become restricted free agents next month. It is not yet known whether the Pelicans plan to go all out to keep either of the two, especially as they each are expected to garner notable interest from multiple teams when the upcoming free agency period kicks off.</p><p>In the case that the Pelicans lose both talents, they surely will be in need of immediate replacements, and Mitchell would be a viable candidate to not only help fill the potential void but also bolster the Pelicans’ backcourt production.</p><p>As mentioned, Davion Mitchell is among the highly touted defenders in this draft. His sheer aggressiveness when defending in the half-court coupled with his knack to create turnovers is just what the Pelicans need for next season.</p><p>On offense, Mitchell is not a guard that needs to have the ball to thrive.
