This comes after Fox called out Golden State Warriors’ Draymond Green for being the league’s biggest whiner. Perhaps the long-term commitment has given him a boost of confidence heading into his first full season with the Spurs.</p><p>Coming off a season-ending injury, Fox <a href="https://twitter.com/TheHoopCentral/status/1963790759011967045" rel="noopener">showed he can still fly</a> by pulling off a windmill dunk off an alley oop pass and sent a message to the NBA, per Spurs reporter Jeff Garcia.</p><p>“Tell them boys I still got bounce,” Fox said after the dunk.</p><p>Fox’s season ended in March after suffering a tendon injury in his left pinkie. The Warriors are hoping that a full offseason <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/golden-state-warriors/warriors-news-draymond-greens-hilarious-jimmy-butler-reaction-to-heat-trade">with Jimmy Butler</a> will get them past the second round roadblock that has stopped them since their championship in the 2021-22 season.</p><p>While his play has diminished over the last few years, Green’s propensity for antics and complaining has somehow gone up from their already historic heights, and recently, San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox stopped by FanDuel’s <i>Run It Back</i> show to put Green on blast.</p><p>“Draymond will clothesline you and then look at the ref like, ‘What’d I do?’” said Fox, per HoopsHype.</p><p>Fox <a href="https://www.hoopshype.com/story/sports/nba/rumors/2025/09/03/deaaron-fox-draymond-green-is-the-leagues-biggest-complainer/85951402007/" rel="noopener">also noted that</a> “Luka’s up there” in terms of complaining, as well as adding that “reffing is god-awful at times.”</p><p>Still, Green’s dirty play and frequent technical fouls have cost the Warriors meaningful games on more than one occasion, including possibly a championship during the 2016 season, and the fact that it has only gone up since that point has to be somewhat alarming for head coach Steve Kerr and company.</p><h2><b>Can the Warriors compete?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Stephen-Curry-smiling.jpg"></figure><p>Last year, the Golden State Warriors’ exit in the second round of the playoffs vs the Minnesota Timberwolves was largely blamed on Stephen Curry’s unfortunate hamstring injury that he suffered in the first half of game one of the series.</p><p>Curry was unable to return at any point during the matchup, and the Warriors’ offense predictably fell off a cliff as a result.</p><p>With Curry back and healthy, there’s a chance the Warriors could compete for a championship once again this year, even in the crowded Western Conference, which features the reigning champion Oklahoma City Thunder.</p><p>However, with Green, Curry, and Butler all set to be 36 or older during the upcoming 2025-26 season, Warriors fans likely would have wanted to see the team’s front office add more in the way of depth this offseason in order to avoid a similar situation to last year, and Mike Dunleavy and company have done precisely nothing in that department so far this summer.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The move erased any doubts about <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-rumors-how-san-antonio-feels-about-3-headed-pg-monster">whether the Spurs</a> would look to move on from Fox amid the arrival of Dylan Harper and the emergence of Stephon Castle.</p><p>On Tuesday, Fox took to X, formerly Twitter, to share <a href="https://x.com/swipathefox/status/1952827090954543325" rel="noopener">a special message</a> in the wake of the big news.</p><p>“San Antonio! So thankful to be a part of an incredible organization, it’s an honor to put on black and silver. Can’t wait for us to make our future! Race for Seis! Go Spurs Go,” wrote Fox, alongside silver and black heart emojis.</p><p>The Spurs traded for Fox just before last year’s trade deadline, getting him out of an old situation with the Sacramento Kings that was growing more dire by the minute.</p><p>However, Fox and Spurs star Victor Wembanyama didn’t get to share the court for much time before Wembanyama went out for the season with a blood clot, from which he has since recovered. Meanwhile, Fox was sidelined with his own injury shortly after that.</p><h2><b>A strange situation for the Spurs</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Fox-vs-the-Mavs.jpg"><figcaption>Daniel Dunn-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Spurs currently have a bit of a logjam at the guard position with Fox, rookie number two overall pick Dylan Harper, and last year’s Rookie of the Year award winner Stephon Castle all vying for minutes in the rotation.</p><p>The most likely situation at the current juncture is that San Antonio starts Fox and Castle in the backcourt while bringing Harper off the bench. However, if Harper quickly starts living up to his star potential, the Spurs could have some interesting decisions to make in terms of how they configure their lineup moving forward.</p><p>Of course, the head of the snake will remain Wembanyama, who was on pace to win last year’s Defensive Player of the Year award before the blood clot scare.</p><p>However, Wembaynama thankfully has been cleared to play for this upcoming season and could quickly enter the MVP race if he continues on his current trajectory.</p><p>The Spurs’ schedule is set to be announced later this month.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

No player option or trade kicker exists on this four-year extension.</p><p>ESPN <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45900046/spurs-deaaron-fox-reach-4-year-229m-max-extension-agent-says" rel="noopener">reported the terms</a> of the contract.</p><p>This new contract locks Fox into his star role with the Spurs next to Victor Wembanyama through the 2029-30 NBA season.</p><p>Fox, 27, was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kings-news-deaaron-fox-trade-spurs-zach-lavine-kings">dealt to the Spurs before the 2025 NBA trade deadline</a> after requesting a trade from the Sacramento Kings. Between the organization firing Mike Brown 31 games into the 2024-25 season and uncertainty surrounding Fox’s long-term future with the franchise, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul decided with Fox that it would be in his best interest to seek a change of scenery.</p><p>As a result, the Kings granted Paul and Fox the ability to speak with teams around the league about the potential of a trade, which led to mutual interest between San Antonio and the star point guard. San Antonio was Fox’s top destination before the trade deadline.</p><p>The 2022-23 NBA Clutch Player of the Year has already formed a very strong bond with Wembanyama and the Spurs’ staff since his arrival in February. A lot of the answer to the Spurs’ dilemma depends on how quickly they are planning to compete with Wembanyama as their centerpiece. Last year, San Antonio saw Stephon Castle win Rookie of the Year and traded for De’Aaron Fox midway through the season, then they <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/dylan-harper-carter-bryant-embracing-spurs-legacy">selected guard Dylan Harper</a> with the second overall pick in the ensuing NBA Draft.</p><p>With all of these talented guards on the roster, there has been speculation that one of them could become the odd man out, and recently, ESPN NBA insider Jeremy Woo <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45807536/2025-nba-draft-executives-debate-espn-poll-rookies-year-best-picks-summer-league" rel="noopener">shed some light</a> in that department, citing a Western Conference scout.</p><p>“[Harper] has some [Manu] Ginobili to his offensive game,” said the scout. “If the 3-point shot ever becomes a true weapon [for him], he makes Fox expendable and gives San Antonio a nice trade asset.”</p><p>Woo also noted that “Harper’s pick-and-roll prowess and crafty, powerful style of play made him the choice for the Spurs, who have been optimizing for additional playmaking around Victor Wembanyama moving forward,” and that even if he comes off the bench this year, the Spurs still view him as a foundational piece of their future.</p><h2><b>An awkward situation for the Spurs</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/San-Antonio-Spurs-guard-DeAaron-Fox-4-points-in-the-first-half-against-the-Dallas-Mavericks-at-Frost-Bank-Center.jpg"><figcaption>Daniel Dunn-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Being too talented is almost always a good problem to have, but it’s still something that the Spurs must address as it pertains to their guard depth chart, and whether some of those resources would be better allocated to other parts of their roster.</p><p>At the current juncture, Fox figures to get the starting point guard nod for San Antonio, with Castle possibly sliding in beside him in the backcourt. The 2023 All-Star confirmed that’s what he’s anticipating.</p><p>“I would hope so,” Fox answered when asked if he’d like a new deal before the one he signed with the Sacramento Kings in 2021 expires.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-deaaron-fox-stunning-reality-looming-surgery">Fox’s Spurs career has spanned just 17 games</a> thus far. Bothered by an injury to the pinky on his shooting hand that was sustained in the preseason, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-what-led-deaaron-fox-surgery-decision">he underwent surgery in mid March</a> after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-victor-wembanyamas-2-word-text-to-teammates">Victor Wembanyama had already been shut down</a> for the year.</p><p>“During that time we wanted to make a push, but unforeseen circumstances happened,” the 27-year-old guard continued about San Antonio’s postseason aspirations.</p><p>“Things happen in this league all the time. Since then, he’s predicted he and Victor Wembanyama can become the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-deaaron-fox-bold-take-victor-wembanyama">best pick and roll combination in the league</a>. He’s expanded expectations to include other teammates, saying Spurs swing man <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-devin-vassell-drops-candid-take-on-role-next-to-wemby-deaaron-fox">Devin Vassell can benefit</a> from his presence. He hasn’t stopped there.</p><p>“We could be extremely good because we’ve had guys like Keldon [Johnson], who’s averaged 20-plus points in a season. You were getting guarded by one of the two best defenders on the team, but when we’re all out there, they won’t be able to do that. Then just being able to get those games under our belt and being able to get a summer of working out with each other.”</p><h2>De’Aaron Fox looks forward to Spurs’ improvement</h2><p>Fox seemed to emphasize offseason practices when he met with the media for the final time in the 2024-’25 season.</p><p>“I’ve talked to some of the guys, and guys want to come down and be able to work out together,” the Houston, Texas resident continued. “Obviously, there will be times where everyone’s here in San Antonio just being able to get some workouts in, just being able to get together as much as possible.”</p><p>“Guys go their separate ways and do their own thing for a bit, Fox added. “But just getting together a week, or two weeks at a time for a get together one month and then see each other the next month is always good, just being able to build toward the future.”</p><p>The former Kentucky Wildcat’s year was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-deaaron-fox-stunning-reality-looming-surgery">cut short in </a><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-deaaron-fox-stunning-reality-looming-surgery" rel="noopener">mid-March</a>. Add <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/spurs-stephon-castle-believes-rookie-year-locked-up">Stephon Castle’s likely Rookie of the Year campaign</a>, and it’s a completely new reality for Vassell now.</p><p>“I want to make sure that with De’Aaron, Vic and Steph, the people that we have here are going to cause more and more attention. I know I’m probably going to be getting a lot more open looks,” the 24-year-old Spurs guard admitted.</p><p>Vassell averaged a career high 19.5 points per game during Wemby’s rookie year last season. That came off the heels of his 18.5 in 2022-2023. This season, he averaged 16.3 per contest.</p><p>“Bringing me in, that naturally takes the ball out of your hands at times,” Fox said of his Spurs teammate. “That’s the nature of this business.</p><p>“With that being said, when I got here, I’m told him, ‘You’re never going to get the best defender when I’m on the court, regardless of how I’m playing.’</p><p>Fox averaged 19.7 points per contest for the Spurs in his 17 with them since <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/spurs-trade-grade-deaaron-fox-blockbuster">arriving via trade in February</a>. He’d averaged at least 25 per night in four of his previous five seasons, making an All-Star Game in 2023.</p><p>“For him, getting a weaker defender and then being able to play off of close-outs, I feel makes the game easier,” Fox added of Vassell.</p><h2>Devin Vassell to prioritize utilizing talent around him</h2><p>A 44.4% career<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEGKRELzPps" rel="noopener"> shooter from the field</a>, Vassell averages 37% beyond the arc. It’s an area he says he’ll further emphasize this summer.</p><p>“Being consistent, being able to space the floor and making sure that if they double off of Vic, if they’re doubling off of De’Aaron because he’s having a good game or however it goes. We have so many weapons. Going forward, I know I’ll probably get a lot of open looks and just being that knockdown shooter,” the Spurs guard said.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/spurs-guard-devin-vassell-rewarding-play-overshadows-recent-misfortunes">Spurs guard has consistently emphasized</a> improving the frequency with which he attacks the basket as well as his defense on the other end.</p><p>“What are those things, those goals,” Vassell reflected on as he described how else he could prove most effective.</p><p>“Having my game translate through everything. There might be games where I don’t score like that, but just impacting the ball defensively. Being a pest. We got Vic in the back line, but if we can pressure the ball be in the pass lanes, we’ll be able to get out and run. I’m just excited to be able to finally be able to do that,” the Spurs guard continued.</p><p>Step one is the baseline. As the year came to an end, Vassell pondered.
