It would prove quite the accomplishment given that the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder stand in their way, not to mention that the Spurs are vying to win the in-season tournament after having missed the playoffs each of the last two seasons. For De’Aaron Fox, though, what the Silver and Black are doing now — and he hopes they’ll do — goes well beyond what happens in Las Vegas.</p><p>“One thousand percent,” Fox responded when asked if he anticipated playing in big games for San Antonio upon his arrival last February.</p><p>“You see, and obviously even without Vic [Victor Wembanyama], I think we have so much talent on this team that we are able to be in any game that we play in,” the former All-Star continued.</p><p>The Spurs have gone <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-mitch-johnson-open-victor-wembanyama-return-thunder">9-3 since superstar Victor Wembanyama was sidelined</a> with a calf strain in mid November.</p><p>“Just the talent that we have in this locker room. But San Antonio stayed composed and regained control of the game.</p><p>The 27-year-old Fox has somehow been relegated in the shadows on the Spurs <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mini-editorials/spurs-trade-proposal-bucks-giannis-antetokounmpo-victor-wembanyama">due to the stardom of Victor Wembanyama</a> and the rise of  Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper. But people forget that Fox, a one-time All-Star, is still one of the most talented playmakers in the NBA. He’s also a dependable player in the clutch.</p><p>There’s a reason why San Antonio signed him to a four-year, $229 million maximum contract extension in the offseason.</p><p>As he showed in his nifty move against Reaves, Fox can manufacture a shot almost every time. His handles, speed, and creativity make him a three-level scorer. Acquired via trade in February, a December 3 game against the Orlando Magic marked De’Aaron Fox’s 30th tilt with the Silver and Black.</p><p>Like the night before when the ninth-year pro hit a couple of big shots in the fourth quarter of a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-harrison-barnes-surprising-reaction-career-night-vs-grizzlies">win vs. the Memphis Grizzlies</a>, Fox again led San Antonio in the waning moments of a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/spurs-news-luke-kornet-saves-day-clutch-block-magic-franz-wagner">114-112 victory in Florida</a>. Following the game, Fox spoke candidly about his team’s final offensive possession, which started with 7.7 seconds left on the clock.</p><p>“Uh, I actually lost the ball. In a tied game like that, you’re trying to get the last shot and when I pull it back, I end up looking up and seeing there was still, like, four seconds left. I thought I went late enough, but I didn’t want to shoot that shot because you make or miss, they still have a lot of time, or a good amount of time,” the Spurs star shared.</p><p>After that revelation that he made his move earlier than he wanted, Fox then admitted that the play didn’t start as planned before making clear what he thought of an important call.</p><p>“I end up losing it, and as I’m getting the ball back, Jonathan [Isaac] reached, so I don’t know what they were arguing. It was just clearly a foul.”</p><p>The Spurs leading scorer in their absence of Victor Wembanyama went to the line and hit both free throws to give the Silver and Black a lead they would not lose.</p><p>“I go up there and I felt confident in making those free throws. So, knock them down and then try to get one more stop.”</p><h2><b>Spurs’ Mitch Johnson discusses final play design</b></h2><p>Without Wemby, there was little doubt the Spurs would go to Fox as the first option.</p><p>“We just wanted to get the ball to him and give him space and thought he did a good job of attacking,” head coach Mitch Johnson said. “And they (the Magic) made a play and it was kind of a loose ball, which is always a bang, bang play.</p><p>“Tough play, but again, his poise and composure to go to the free throw line and knock ’em down was a great job by De’Aaron.”</p><p>Fox is averaging 25 points per game this season. That’s right around where he’s been for the better part of the last six seasons, the last third of which has been spent with San Antonio.</p><p>“Yeah. San Antonio lost Castle to a hip flexor strain a game later. The Spurs say Harper is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-dylan-harper-thanksgiving-turkey-giveaway">close to returning</a> from a calf strain of his own for his first action since Nov. 2.</p><p>“Vic and Steph were out, and Dylan’s out. We’ve had so many guys that have missed some time and we’re still finding ways to win games,” Fox added. “So, when everybody’s back, that’s what we’re continuing to expect. But, it’s going to be lineups that we haven’t played with as well. I think KJ [Keldon Johnson] was great. So, we have a lot of guys who can come off and affect the game offensively, affect the game defensively, affect the game with just energy in itself. So, whenever you have that, especially when it’s not coming from starters, that’s big for you,” Johnson shared.</p><p>San Antonio is looking for its first trip to the playoffs since 2019. Beyond that, the proud franchise hasn’t won a postseason series since 2017. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-victor-wembanyama-out-weeks-calf-strain">If they are to break either skid, Wembanyama</a>, Castle and Harper will play a role — just not right now.</p><p>“We have guys who are coming off the bench who can really affect the game. In late October, the star guard gave away shoes during an event in the city’s main downtown park. A week before Thanksgiving, Fox and his family provided families who live in one of San Antonio’s lower income areas with turkeys and meals.</p><p>Because Fox joined the Spurs last February via trade, this is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-deaaron-fox-obvious-truth-bomb-victor-wembanyama-stephon-castle-absences">his first fall as a member of the Silver and Black</a>.</p><p>ClutchPoints noted that when asking the 2023 NBA All-Star about immersing himself within the South Texas community.</p><p>“I didn’t grow up in the situation that I’m in now. So, seeing that and knowing how people grow up, knowing that there is a struggle in the world and all we’re doing is playing basketball and we get to do that for a living,” Fox responded.</p><p>“Just being able to get out into the community and help people who are in need, especially in times like this around the holiday season where there are people who can’t get gifts or have a Thanksgiving and they don’t have food on the table the way that we do.</p><p>“It’s just something that we love to do. They spent time meeting and interacting with residents, sharing conversations and photos.</p><p>Though <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-deaaron-fox-reveals-date-possible-surgery-finger-injury">Fox played only 17 games with the Spurs last year</a> before season-ending surgery and has suited up in just six this year, his wife is from San Antonio.</p><p>“She was growing up here,” Fox shared. “She played basketball with and against so many people who were in the school district or people who have worked for the school district or went to school there or went to school here.</p><p>“It’s definitely the best whenever you are connected one way or another to some people that you’re helping out. Though, we do it to people that we don’t know at all. It’s special regardless, but yeah, it does, it means a little something when it’s something that you know.”</p><p>For Fox, who spent the first seven-and-a-half seasons of his career with the Sacramento Kings, the event continued a family tradition.</p><p>“This is something that me and my wife do basically pretty much every year that we’ve been together,” Fox said. “We usually do something for Thanksgiving and for Christmas. We just love the holiday season, just love the feeling.”</p><p>Though he was born in Louisiana, Fox grew up in Houston, which sits about a three-hour drive from San Antonio.</p><p>“Obviously, we’re in very fortunate positions that we are able to do things like that. We just love doing it every year for the community that supports us,” Fox continued.</p><p>“We wouldn’t be here without the type of support that you have for the leagues that we play in and for the teams that we play for. Second overall pick Dylan Harper was already out with an injury of his own. In fielding questions about how his team was able to win under those circumstances, star guard De’Aaron Fox gave ClutchPoints an answer that will now be tested.</p><p>“Obviously, we want everybody to be healthy, but the way that this team is built, we’re able to withstand those types of things.”</p><p>ClutchPoints’ question to Fox had actually centered on him and if the Spurs being shorthanded proved an <a href="https://twitter.com/HectorLedesmaTV/status/1990258122234151155" rel="noopener">instance of why the franchise traded for him</a> last February.</p><p>“We have an extremely talented group,” Fox responded, focusing on the group.</p><p>“Even when I was out and then Dylan goes out, we still have a talented group of guys out there that are playing and when one guy goes down, not just one person steps up, but I think our entire team steps up. We have seven guys in double figures, two guys with 20. Harrison Barnes added 20.</p><h2>De’Aaron Fox and Spurs prepare for life without Victor Wembanyama</h2><p>Diagnosed with a left calf strain, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-victor-wembanyama-out-weeks-calf-strain">Wemby is expected to miss several weeks</a>. The Spurs have already ruled Castle out for their next contest vs. the Memphis Grizzlies.</p><p>“I think we handled it well,” Fox continued about the team’s first action without the two.</p><p>“With that and then, we just lost two games in a row, so you want to come out and you want to hit first and just try to take command of the game, knowing that your game plan changes whenever you don’t have Vic out there. And then you come back in half and Steph’s not playing now, so I think we responded well to both of those things happening.”</p><p>San Antonio headed into that Sacramento victory off <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/golden-state-warriors/warriors-news-draymond-green-victor-wembanyama-exchange-injury">back-to-back setbacks to the Golden State Warriors</a>.</p><p>“You have to have resilience as a team,” Fox added. “Because you could go on a five-game winning streak and you could very easily go on a five-game losing streak, so whenever you have those things, you have to try to (bounce back) because you don’t want to have those ups and downs. That’s the sign of a team that’s not very good.”</p><p>Heading into a stretch without Wembanyama for probably the next month – with Castle’s overall status uncertain and Harper still out for at least a couple more games – the 9-4 Spurs have their work cut out for them if they are to stay near the top of the Western Conference.</p><p>“Whenever you have those two games that you might drop or even if you might lose three games in a row, you have to figure out a way to not let that snowball. Frankly, it helped that the struggling Sacramento Kings were the opponent. After losing to the Golden State Warriors in the first of back-to-back contests against the Dubs, the Silver and Black built a ten-point lead more than midway through the fourth quarter. But missed shots and turnovers plagued Fox and the Spurs down the stretch. That included a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-victor-wembanyamas-admission-last-second-deaaron-fox-miss-loss">misfire on a potential game-winner at the buzzer</a>.</p><p>Given his <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-trade-grade-deaaron-fox-blockbuster">arrival past the midpoint of last season</a> and surgery on his shooting hand that ended his year prematurely, Fox has played in just 22 games total with the Spurs.</p><p>ClutchPoints talked with Harrison Barnes about Fox’s prowess as a creator and scorer. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-harrison-barnes-called-shot-victor-wembanyama-breakout-mvp-campaign">14-year NBA vet</a> spent five-plus seasons with Fox in Sacramento.</p><p>“Absolutely. I mean, I think this is maybe his fifth, fourth, sixth game back,” Barnes responded, alluding to what he’s seen time and again from Fox over his career.</p><p>“[He] Didn’t have training camp, you know what I mean?” Barnes continued. “I think there’s still a process of him getting his legs underneath him, but he’s starting to get into form, continue to be himself. I think as the season goes on, he’s just going to get better and better. The 2023 NBA Clutch Player of the Year took the ball behind the half-court line. After a screen from reigning Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle, and with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-victor-wembanyama-bill-simmons">Victor Wembanyama in the paint pointing up to suggest a lob</a>, Fox took a step back jumper from the left elbow extended over Gary Payton II.</p><p>The shot hit the front of the rim from Fox’s viewpoint. A month later with their postseason chances slipping away, the Spurs shut down Fox, who’d been dealing with nagging injuries to his shooting hand since before that season began.</p><h2>De’Aaron Fox reminds how valuable he’ll be to Spurs</h2><p>Making Fox’s 9-for-14 performance from the field in his return more impressive is that none of those baskets came in the first quarter.</p><p>After getting the start, Fox <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-deaaron-fox-announces-return-injury-first-2025-26-bucket">reentered and quickly scored 13 points</a> to start a second quarter that helped the Spurs stretch a lead they would never lose.</p><p>ClutchPoints asked Fox if he used the opening period to get back in a groove before deciding to attack.</p><p>“Funny enough, when I started the game, I’m like, ‘I’m probably not gonna make a shot right now,” Fox responded.</p><p>“I haven’t played a game since March. You’re gonna have that type of rust, but can I still affect the game?” And I felt like I did that defensively and then rebounding in the first quarter. And then second quarter, just kind of got a rhythm of being out there.”</p><p>In continuing to answer ClutchPoints’ question, the 2023 NBA All-Star admitted that it did take a little while to get his legs under him.</p><p>“I got my second wind, and shots start falling. I wasn’t doing anything different than I would do in the past, but just being able to get comfortable obviously helps that.”</p><p>Fox knows that his already unique scoring prowess is aided by Wembanyama’s presence.</p><p>“Teams are gonna guard him in a special way. So for us, it opens everybody else up and for me, if I’m able to play one-on-one like that, I like my odds the majority of the time.”</p><p>“And even with Steph [Stephon Castle], I feel like it opens up for them as well,” Fox added.</p><p>On a team dominated by the young phenom Wembanyama and newly turned 21-year-old reigning Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle, Fox is fully aware of what he means to a team that’s near <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-devin-vassell-victor-wembanyamas-demand-offense">the top of the West at 7-2</a>. The Spurs prevailed in both categories by securing 43 rebounds and creating 31 assists. It wasn’t the same for the Pelicans, finishing with 40 rebounds and 27 assists.</p><p>Eight players scored in double-digits for San Antonio, including Fox. He led the way with 24 points, three rebounds, three assists, and a steal. He shot 9-of-14 from the field, including 2-of-5 from beyond the arc, and 4-of-5 from the free-throw line. Victor Wembanyama came next with 18 points and 18 rebounds, Devin Vassell had 16 points and two rebounds, Harrison Barnes put up 15 points and two rebounds, while Stephon Castle provided 14 points and 14 assists.</p><p>The Spurs will look forward to their next matchup, being on the road. De’Aaron Fox has been dealing with a hamstring injury he sustained during the offseason, and is now ready for game action.</p><p>“San Antonio Spurs star De’Aaron Fox plans to make his season debut against the New Orleans Pelicans at home on Saturday, sources tell ESPN. Fox rehabbed from an offseason hamstring injury and ramped up this week for his weekend debut.”</p><p>The 2023 All-Star is likely to get the starting nod upon his return. That <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-victor-wembanyama-still-not-playing-advantage-says-gilbert-arenas">gives the Spurs a major threat</a> in the backcourt to complement Victor Wembanyama immediately. However, it appears San Antonio <a href="https://x.com/JaredWeissNBA/status/1979223410531274785" rel="noopener">will be without</a> two important players for Wednesday’s contest, according to Jared Weiss of The Athletic.</p><p>“Spurs wing Lindy Waters is set to undergo a minor laser eye procedure that was caught during preseason physicals,” Weiss wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Waters identified an issue with his eye about a year and a half ago but his preseason physical determined a procedure was needed. He will miss opening night but likely to be back in the first week of the season. De’Aaron Fox (hamstring) played in shootaround scrimmaging this morning but is still not on track for opening night.”</p><p>Weiss writes that Waters will not play on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Fox is reportedly “not on track” to be available in Dallas against the Mavs.</p><p>The hope, of course, is that both players won’t need to miss too much time. San Antonio is looking for Fox and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-victor-wenbanyama-trend-terrifying-for-nba">Victor Wembanyama to lead the Spurs</a> this season. Fox was acquired via trade from the Sacramento Kings last year. He averaged 19.7 points, 6.8 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 1.5 steals per outing across 17 total contests played with San Antonio following the trade.</p><p>The 2022-23 All-Star projects to play a pivotal role as the Spurs look to contend soon. They likely aren’t ready to make a championship run yet, but San Antonio could emerge as a playoff contender within the next year or two.
