Since then, he’s predicted he and Victor Wembanyama can become the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-deaaron-fox-bold-take-victor-wembanyama">best pick and roll combination in the league</a>. He’s expanded expectations to include other teammates, saying Spurs swing man <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-devin-vassell-drops-candid-take-on-role-next-to-wemby-deaaron-fox">Devin Vassell can benefit</a> from his presence. He hasn’t stopped there.</p><p>“We could be extremely good because we’ve had guys like Keldon [Johnson], who’s averaged 20-plus points in a season. You were getting guarded by one of the two best defenders on the team, but when we’re all out there, they won’t be able to do that. It stands to reason for a guy with his offensive talent who went 11th overall in the draft. That changed when the Spurs traded for De’Aaron Fox to pair alongside the generational Victor Wembanyama. Add <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/spurs-stephon-castle-believes-rookie-year-locked-up">Stephon Castle’s likely Rookie of the Year campaign</a>, and it’s a completely new reality for Vassell now.</p><p>“I want to make sure that with De’Aaron, Vic and Steph, the people that we have here are going to cause more and more attention. I know I’m probably going to be getting a lot more open looks,” the 24-year-old Spurs guard admitted.</p><p>Vassell averaged a career high 19.5 points per game during Wemby’s rookie year last season. That came off the heels of his 18.5 in 2022-2023. This season, he averaged 16.3 per contest.</p><p>“Bringing me in, that naturally takes the ball out of your hands at times,” Fox said of his Spurs teammate. “That’s the nature of this business.</p><p>“With that being said, when I got here, I’m told him, ‘You’re never going to get the best defender when I’m on the court, regardless of how I’m playing.’</p><p>Fox averaged 19.7 points per contest for the Spurs in his 17 with them since <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/spurs-trade-grade-deaaron-fox-blockbuster">arriving via trade in February</a>. He’d averaged at least 25 per night in four of his previous five seasons, making an All-Star Game in 2023.</p><p>“For him, getting a weaker defender and then being able to play off of close-outs, I feel makes the game easier,” Fox added of Vassell.</p><h2>Devin Vassell to prioritize utilizing talent around him</h2><p>A 44.4% career<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEGKRELzPps" rel="noopener"> shooter from the field</a>, Vassell averages 37% beyond the arc. It’s an area he says he’ll further emphasize this summer.</p><p>“Being consistent, being able to space the floor and making sure that if they double off of Vic, if they’re doubling off of De’Aaron because he’s having a good game or however it goes. We have so many weapons. Going forward, I know I’ll probably get a lot of open looks and just being that knockdown shooter,” the Spurs guard said.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/spurs-guard-devin-vassell-rewarding-play-overshadows-recent-misfortunes">Spurs guard has consistently emphasized</a> improving the frequency with which he attacks the basket as well as his defense on the other end.</p><p>“What are those things, those goals,” Vassell reflected on as he described how else he could prove most effective.</p><p>“Having my game translate through everything. There might be games where I don’t score like that, but just impacting the ball defensively. Being a pest. We got Vic in the back line, but if we can pressure the ball be in the pass lanes, we’ll be able to get out and run. I’m just excited to be able to finally be able to do that,” the Spurs guard continued.</p><p>Step one is the baseline. As the year came to an end, Vassell pondered. Literally.</p><p>The Silver and Black <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/spurs-news-victor-wembanyama-reason-deaaron-fox-no-1-trade-priority">traded for the 27-year-old guard in very early February</a>. Two and a half weeks later Wemby <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/spurs-news-victor-wembanyamas-2-word-text-to-teammates">went out for the season with an injury</a>. In between, Fox and the young generational talent paired up for five games. The Spurs <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-san-antonio-preaching-balance-playoff-pursuit">won two of them and lost two others by a single point</a>.</p><p>Instantly showing glimpses of what the Spurs and their fans thought they could provide, Fox and Wemby gave San Antonio reason for excitement heading into the All-Star break. The city – and the team, for that matter – are still waiting with excitement.</p><p>In between the All-Star Game and the Spurs first contest of the season’s ‘second half,’ doctors diagnosed Wembanyama with blood clots in his right shoulder. So, while the Spurs’ two biggest names aren’t starting from scratch, they don’t exactly have time together under their belt either.</p><p>ClutchPoints asked Fox if he’s looking forward to a first offseason with the 7-foot-5 generational talent. His answer went beyond a simple yes.</p><p>“We want to be the best pick and roll combo in the league. In addition to adding a second consistent scoring punch, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-trade-grade-deaaron-fox-blockbuster">the specifics of his game made him an enticing target</a>. Team brass assessed that a player who can pull-up, shoot, get into the lane and create for others, all while handling the ball, was exactly what they needed.</p><h2><b>De’Aaron Fox looks forward to his first summer as a Spur</b></h2><p>Three days after being acquired from the Sacramento Kings via trade, Fox joined the Spurs for practice on February 4 before starting the next night.</p><p>Even then, he tied Wemby with a team-high 24 points in a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-deaaron-fox-real-victor-wembanyama-san-antonio-debut">126-125 victory at the Atlanta Hawks</a>.</p><p>“Coming to a team in the middle of the season, you kind of know what guys do, but you haven’t been in it or around the guys just yet,” Fox told ClutchPoints.</p><p>Somewhat similar to Wembanyama, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/spurs-news-deaaron-fox-stunning-reality-looming-surgery">his season ended early soon</a> as well. Following a March 12 win vs. the Dallas Mavericks, the Spurs announced that Fox would undergo surgery the following week to repair tendon damage caused by a preseason fracture in the pinky of his shooting hand.</p><p>“Just being able to be around them for the last few months, getting to know guys and really understanding guys personalities and what they like to do,” Fox continued of watching from the sideline. “Seeing them on the court every single day is a lot different than just seeing guys on film.”</p><p>That didn’t apply to Wemby, though, because of concurring injuries. Over the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CujW4mB40rM">span of 11 days,</a> the Silver and Black have seven games against some of the top teams in the NBA, all without their two best players.</p><p>That a three-game winning streak stopped when this stretch started shouldn’t stun anyone. Frankly, that they’ve <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-mitch-johnson-calls-out-team-embarrassing-42-point-loss-warriors">lost the first four games of this gauntlet</a> shouldn’t surprise.</p><p>Asked about the forthcoming stretch, Devin Vassell admitted it’s going to be tough, especially without Wemby and Fox on the court.</p><p>“It’s tough,” Devin Vassell admitted. “They create so much for us.”</p><p>Before blood clots in his right shoulder <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/spurs-news-victor-wembanyamas-2-word-text-to-teammates">ended his season in mid-February</a>, Wemby was enjoying a better season than his historic Rookie of the Year campaign. His nightly averages of 24 points, 11 rebounds, and 3.8 blocks – a stat in which he still leads the league despite not having played in a month and a half – earned the 7-foot-phenom a first All-Star nod. Fox, a 25-point-per-game scorer for the better part of the last five seasons, was getting 20 per contest in adjusting to San Antonio before <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-deaaron-fox-stunning-reality-looming-surgery">his season ended in early March</a>.</p><p>“Both of them impact the game on both ends of the floor,” Vassell shared. “Vic easily could win Defensive Player of the Year this year, and the numbers that he had on the offensive end, the amount of people that he creates for and people have to double team him. Same thing with De’Aaron.</p><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/San-Antonio-Spurs-center-Victor-Wembanyama-1-and-guard-DeAaron-Fox-4-react-during-the-second-quarter-against-the-Washington-Wizards-at-Capital-One-Arena.jpg"><figcaption>Reggie Hildred-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><h2>Different Spurs are trying to pick up slack</h2><p>Without their two leading scorers, Vasell has tried to fill that void. Already the Spurs’ <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-guard-devin-vassell-rewarding-play-overshadows-recent-misfortunes">third leading scorer this year</a> before the injuries to Wemby and Fox, the former Florida State star, unsurprisingly, has led the team in that category. He’s ranked second in the previous two seasons.</p><p>“It’s been next man up,” the 11th overall pick of the 2020 NBA Draft said.</p><p>It’s a sentiment with which Chris Paul agrees. Both the future Hall of Fame point guard and Vassell singled out players who are trying to pick up the slack.</p><p>“Learning different guys. Blake [Wesley], obviously, has been playing a lot more,” Paul stated. “He’s been looking for good for us. Mamu [Sandro Mamukelashvili] and whatnot. It’s been an adjustment.”</p><p>One of the Spurs’ three first-round picks in 2023, Wesley was in and out of the rotation last season before spending more than half of this year on the bench. Similarly, the 6-foot-9 Mamukelashvili has found more minutes over the last several weeks.</p><p>“Whoever it’s been, whether it’s been Ju [Julian Champagnie], whether it’s been Steph [Stephon Castle] stepping up, J [Jeremy Sochan], me, C.P. [Chris Paul],” Vassell added about players who’ve taken more of the load.</p><p>Though the Spurs <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-devin-vassell-change-down-stretch-season">aren’t mathematically eliminated from Play-in contention</a> in the Western Conference, all signs – including the decision <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-deaaron-fox-reveals-date-possible-surgery-finger-injury">regarding Fox’s surgery</a> – point to the long-term future.</p><p>“It doesn’t matter who it is; everyone is ready to take that next step up. That’s what we’ve been doing,” Vassell concluded.</p><p>That next step is key. You want to be able to get a full off-season in with the guys and being able to be on the court, so that was really a big part of the decision-making,” Fox admitted.</p><p>“We’ve talked about it for a while,” the 27-year-old guard continued. “We got the date a little bit ago and just wanted to make sure everything lined up perfectly. Perhaps the announcement came a couple of days early. But it wasn’t unexpected, especially to Devin Vassell.</p><p>Directly following an early March game at the Sacramento Kings, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-deaaron-fox-revealing-admission-sacramento-kings-return">which marked his first meeting against his former team</a> since the trade a month before, Fox <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-deaaron-fox-reveals-date-possible-surgery-finger-injury">revealed insight regarding the nagging finger</a>. He told reporters that he and the Spurs planned to have the pinky on his dominant hand examined in mid-March when they’d be in Los Angeles because the related doctor practices there. Following a San Antonio <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBpO8U61zlA&amp;t=7s" rel="noopener">victory over the Dallas Mavericks</a> three games before that Lakers match-up, Fox again alluded that the injured tendon in his left hand would be repaired with some expediency.</p><p>“It’ll get fixed soon enough.”</p><p>“I’ve been playing with it the whole season. A lot of the time I just say, it is what it is. But, I mean, I scored 60. I scored 60 with it and then I had 49 the next night with it. Ahead of the announcement of the procedure, the 24-year-old Spurs guard contemplated the big picture while discussing the possibility that Fox would miss the rest of this season.</p><p>“Obviously, it’s something that we all know he needs to get fixed. I don’t want to sit here and speak on what he should or shouldn’t do. I just want to make sure that he’s good and that he’s healthy because I know when he is healthy he’s going to help this team tremendously,” Vassell said.</p><p>The decision comes just weeks after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-victor-wembanyamas-2-word-text-to-teammates">Victor Wembanyama’s season ended because of blood clots</a>.</p><p>“Obviously, I would love to have all five of my fingers and not have one get in the way or not have somebody tape them together,” Fox shared. “It happened the second day of training camp so at that point, I’ve got to play.”</p><p>Drifting <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-veteran-drops-candid-admission-continued-struggles">further out of Western Conference’s Play-in contention</a>, the decision to go forward with season-ending surgery became an easier one for the Spurs, even if Fox didn’t talk about it much with his teammates.</p><p>“He hasn’t really explained the injury, I guess, to me so I don’t really understand how it affects him during the game or however it does,” Vassell revealed.</p><p>As revealing are his wishes for Fox.</p><p>“I want to make sure that he’s good, that he’s healthy.”</p><p>Turns out, that’s the plan for the fall, not the spring, of 2025.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

After Fox was traded from the Sacramento Kings at the trade deadline, he played in 17 games for the Spurs. He averaged 23.5 points, 6.3 assists, and 4.8 rebounds. He nearly matched that in his sixth week with the San Antonio Spurs. The 2023 NBA All-Star scored a game-high 32 points and dished out 11 assists vs. the Dallas Mavericks. But in terms of numbers, it’s a stat he didn’t get that sticks out.</p><p>“They didn’t miss the last six shots that they took. I’m like, at some point they’ve got to miss and I’ll get one (rebound) at the very, very end,” Fox said following the Spurs 126-116 win vs. the Mavs.</p><p>“It would’ve been great to get that, but it is what it is.”</p><p>Drafted with the fifth overall pick of the 2017 draft, Fox enjoyed a 31-point, 15-assist, 10-rebound night in November of 2018. Since then, Fox has scored 60 points in a contest (this season while still with the Kings) and has hit eight three-pointers in a game. But, he’s never again put up double figures in three stat categories on the same night.</p><h2>De’Aaron Fox enjoys best night as a Spur</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/San-Antonio-Spurs-guard-DeAaron-Fox-4-shoots-in-the-second-half-against-the-Dallas-Mavericks-at-Frost-Bank-Center.jpg"><figcaption>Daniel Dunn-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>A tenth rebound vs. the Mavericks would’ve been the icing on the cake for the 27-year-old guard. His 32 points marked a high with the Spurs by eclipsing the 30 he put up in <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-victor-wembanyama-hilarious-wizards-confusion-deaaron-fox">his fourth game with the team on February 10</a>. That performance also came in a win.</p><p>“I think I played a decent game,” Fox revealed following the victory vs. Dallas. “Obviously, I would love to shoot the ball better, but at the end of the day, you don’t want to judge your game just off of how well you put the ball in the basket.”</p><p>Though he went just three-of-five from three-point land, the former Kentucky star hit <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBpO8U61zlA" rel="noopener">12 of the 25 shots he took from the field</a>. His 11 assists opened things up for everyone else on a night in which the Spurs hit 53% from the floor.</p><p>“Personally with me, I think he sees me a lot,” Spurs forward/center Jeremy Sochan said. “We’ve connected a few times. It’s been great. He’s been a wonderful addition to this team and I think he’s going to be a big part of it too.”</p><p>“I thought his assertiveness was great,” acting head coach Mitch Johnson added. “I thought he lived in the paint and was having a great balance of imposing his will individually and then also getting guys the ball or shots.”</p><p>Listed as a point guard, the 6-3 Fox is no stranger to creating for teammates. Through his brief stint in San Antonio that’s sometimes been forgotten because the Spurs <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/spurs-trade-grade-deaaron-fox-blockbuster">depend on him to score</a>, especially with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-victor-wembanyamas-2-word-text-to-teammates">Victor Wembanyama out for the season</a>. But, with that attention comes other opportunities.</p><p>“Just being able to get guys involved and there are times where teams throw two (defenders) at me,” Fox shared. “Sometimes, I get off of it early, sometimes you hold it a little longer just to spread the defense out a little more and just try to make it easier for other guys.”</p><p>Assisting wasn’t the issue vs. Dallas. Washington.</p><p>“I think it was good. Offense hasn’t been the problem. Even in talking to guys, offense hasn’t really been the problem for most of the year,” Fox continued. “When I first came here, (assistant coach) Brett Brown told me that they weren’t turning teams over. I think the first six, seven games out that I played we were number one in turning teams over as well. You have to find a consistency in doing that.”</p><p>The Spurs <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/why-victor-wembanyama-spurs-arent-backing-away-playoff-talk">won two of their five games</a> in which Fox and Wemby played together following <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/spurs-trade-grade-deaaron-fox-blockbuster">an early February trade</a>. All were on the road, and two of those losses came by a single point. The other occurred vs. the defending champion Boston Celtics.</p><p>“With some of the best teams in the league, you have to be a good defensive team because that’s what you have to hang your hat on,” Fox said</p><p>“You can be a really good offensive team, but when the ball doesn’t go in that night, what can you do?  That’s when teams struggle. We know we have to be a better defensive team and try to be consistent on that end.” the 2023 All-Star, who’s averaging 23.4 points per game this season, added.</p><p>Jeremy Sochan’s 18 points were second on the Spurs (along with Keldon Johnson) vs. Dallas. Dealing with a left calf contusion, Sochan did not play in the loss to the visiting Mavs two nights prior. A back-up center at times who played <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/editorials/oft-maligned-jeremy-sochan-best-nba-game-ever-suns-upset">point guard for the team last season</a>, the third-year pro is fitting in best he can amid Wembayama’s absence.</p><p>“We just have to really be together in those moments, especially without Vic.” Sochan continued. “Communicating, being loud, have to be aggressive, especially with the boards as well.”</p><p>The Spurs close out a four-game home stand with a pair of teams against whom they recently lost: the Charlotte Hornets, who were one of the aforementioned one-point losses right after Fox joined the Spurs, and the New Orleans Pelicans, who got them in <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-devin-vassell-brutal-take-consecutive-losses-pelicans">back to back games in late February</a>.</p><p>“Especially dropping two in a row to New Orleans,” Fox shared. “You definitely want to come out there and win those games, but I wouldn’t say that they’re any different than others. Following a loss to the Detroit Pistons in Austin, Texas as part of Spurs outreach in the Texas capital, the newly acquired Spur responded with three simple words about whether in-season action could be taken on the pinky.</p><p>“I don’t know.”</p><p>Perhaps more telling than the chance that a procedure could prematurely end his season was the reality that the organization had <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-victor-wembanyamas-2-word-text-to-teammates">shut down Victor Wemanayama</a> because of blood clots just two days before.</p><p>A push to this year’s playoffs was a huge reason the Spurs acquired Fox in early February. In his eighth season, the former University of Kentucky star should form a formidable duo with Wemby for years to come. Hovering around the Western Conference Play-In picture for most of this season, San Antonio was hoping that future would start now.</p><p>“I’m not playing with tape on my dominant hand for the rest of my career,” Fox said following that loss to Detroit.</p><p>It’s a sentiment that seemed to resonate in the moment given that Wemby won’t see the court again until the fall of 2025 at the earliest.</p><p>“It’s basically been the same the rest of the year. I’ve gone through a workout with taping it and the main problem is just the fact that if you throw me the ball, the first thing it’s going to hit is the finger. That’s the reason that I really do tape it. But, at some point, we’re going to have to sit down and get it fixed.</p><p>On the heels of Wembanyama’s injury and those comments, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/3-deaaron-fox-bold-predictions-after-bombshell-spurs-trade">ClutchPoints predicted the Spurs and Fox “get it fixed”</a> before the end of the season.</p><p>A 25 points per game scorer for the better part of the last five seasons, Fox was hitting that number this season before the trade. While he’s putting up 23.6 with the Spurs, he’s averaged just 15.6 through his last five. I’m not going to lie to you,” Fox answered when asked how much he had thought about the night leading up.</p><p>The Spurs, severely shorthanded since <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-victor-wembanyamas-2-word-text-to-teammates">Victor Wembanyama went out of the season</a>, fell to a Kings squad that was also missing very important pieces. Domantas Sabonis and Malik Monk did not play in the 127-109 Sacramento victory.</p><p>Before the game, the Kings, in a standard practice nowadays when former players return for an initial meeting, played a tribute video for the man they took with the fifth overall pick of the 2017 NBA Draft.</p><p>It had a mild effect on Fox.</p><p>“I wouldn’t say I got emotional,” though the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-deaaron-fox-game-winner-grizzlies">2023 All-Star</a> was quick to add, “It was great. I was here for so long, almost a decade. I really enjoyed the fans,” the University of Kentucky product said of his seven and a half seasons in Sacramento.  “And you cheer for your team, so it was definitely good.”</p><p>Because the Kings had already hosted the Spurs this season (a 127-125 San Antonio victory in which <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/takeaways-victor-wembanyama-third-career-triple-double-spurs-win-kings">Wembanyama notched what would prove his only triple-double</a> this season), Fox’s next trip to his former home probably won’t occur until next season considering the Spurs are slipping further away from play-in contention.</p><p>“I hope I play 10-plus more years. So, I’ll be back. I’ll be here,” Fox continued. “It’s definitely good to get the first one out of the way.”</p><p>“At the end of the day, when you change teams at some point you’re going to play the team,” he added.</p><p>Fox’s <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-victor-wembanyama-reason-deaaron-fox-no-1-trade-priority">first trip back</a> presented a night that, even if he didn’t pay much mind to, he couldn’t totally escape either.</p><p>“I knew it would come, but for me it was rather: Are we going to come here on a winning streak or losing streak.”</p><p>The setback to the Kings represented a sixth Spurs loss in the nine contests <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-deaaron-fox-victor-wembanyama-helping-san-antonio">since Wemby went down</a> for the year. Fox hasn’t scored more than 20 in <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/player/gamelog/_/id/4066259/deaaron-fox" rel="noopener">any of his last seven games</a> as he battles a finger injury.</p><p>“Nah, I haven’t made a shot in two weeks, man,” Fox laughed in response to whether the environment, in which some fans booed, played a part in his notching 16 points.</p><p>“Nothing sticks out, but just being able to interact with fans, some media members and some of our ushers.
