Guard De’Anthony Melton, who has missed the last two games due to a sprained left ACL, is undergoing knee surgery and will <a href="https://x.com/warriorspr/status/1859401415900397910?s=46&amp;t=vnLDgTn4yNZudl1UzUUjJA" rel="noopener">miss the rest of the season</a>, according to the team.</p><p>Melton was a big piece of this Warriors team on both ends of the floor. He provided versatility on offense as someone who could knock down open 3-pointers and also handle the ball as a secondary playmaker. Defensively, he is one of the best guard defenders in the NBA. The Warriors will certainly miss his impact in all aspects of the game.</p><p>Melton was averaging 10.3 points per game in six games this season while shooting 37.1% from 3-point range on nearly six attempts a night. The Warriors are currently in first place in the Western Conference at 10-3 and will now have to find a way to replace Melton’s production in the lineup.</p><p>The Warriors have a few manageable games in front of them to try to figure out what they want to do in the rotation with Melton out, although <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-steve-kerr-apologizes-disgusting-game-grizzlies">Steve Kerr probably has a good feel for things</a> after playing seven games without the free agent signing.The Warriors will take on the Atlanta Hawks before continuing their NBA Cup campaign with a date with the banged-up New Orleans Pelicans. After that, they will see the San Antonio Spurs and the Brooklyn Nets.</p><p>The good news for the Warriors is that they have built one of the deepest rosters in the league. The second unit needs Brandin Podziemski’s table-setting, and Moses Moody has proven he’s always ready irrespective of his planned nightly role in the rotation. Extremes of Gary Payton II’s unique skill set mean he’s most effective facing specific opponents.</p><p>There’s still a possibility the Golden State Warriors eventually revert to rotating in a fifth starter alongside Stephen Curry, Andrew Wiggins, Draymond Green and Trayce Jackson-Davis 2024-25 continues. If anyone gets a firm grasp on that final starting spot, though, De’Anthony Melton is clearly the betting favorite.</p><p>Melton spearheaded one of Golden State’s finest two-way efforts of the season on Sunday, his palpable energy and two-way playmaking keying the Dubs’ <a href="https://www.nba.com/game/gsw-vs-okc-0022400207/box-score#box-score" rel="noopener">127-116</a> victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder.</p><p>Steve Kerr gave the the seventh-year veteran his first start in a Warriors uniform at Paycom Center, just one game after he missed five straight while managing nagging lower back pain—the same injury that marred his season with the Philadelphia 76ers a year ago. But <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-deanthony-melton-joins-stephen-curry-on-dubs-injury-list">Melton looked no worse for wear</a> against Oklahoma City, making his impact felt on both ends while staking a seemingly successful claim to be Golden State’s fifth and final <a href="https://x.com/anthonyVslater/status/1855805216563565022" rel="noopener">full-time starter</a>.</p><p>“I would like for that starting group that was out there tonight, I would like for that group to be our group going forward,” Kerr said after the game, per Anthony Slater of <i>The Athletic</i>.</p><h2><b>What De’Anthony Melton’s starting role means for Warriors</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/USATSI_24732740-1.jpg"><figcaption>Alonzo Adams-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Melton was one of of Golden State’s biggest stories from offseason workouts and training camp. After that back injury limited him to just 38 games last season, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-deanthony-melton-replaces-klay-thompson-12-8-million-contract">Warriors nabbed Melton</a> on the cheap in free agency for a one-year deal worth the mid-level exception. He showed why that contract was broadly considered a bargain shortly thereafter, with scuttlebutt from informal practices at Chase Center and the season’s official tipoff in Hawaii suggesting he was the most likely backcourt starter next to Curry.</p><p>But Melton’s back issue flared up toward the end of the exhibition slate, giving the coaching staff a glimpse of what this team’s biggest, most athletic and perhaps most talented lineup can do in a preseason win over the Los Angeles Lakers. Don’t count on that quintet starting another game this season.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jonathan-kuminga-surprise-benching-sparks-season-best-performance-warriors-win-pelicans">uneven beginning to Kuminga’s</a> fourth NBA go-around straightened out immediately upon his shift to the bench. Thinking bigger, none of Golden State’s other options for that last starting slot provide the all-court versatility Melton does at his best.</p><p>“Mr. Do Something,” as he was fondly referred to while with the Memphis Grizzlies, stuffed the stat sheet versus the Thunder with 19 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals. He shot 5-of-8 from three-point range and 4-of-6 at the line, too, giving the Dubs some much-needed offensive juice while doubling as their primary defender on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who shot just 6-of-17 from the floor and needed 14 free throws attempts to score 24 points.</p><p>“I like this lineup with Melt. I anticipate doing it again Tuesday,” Kerr said. “I think it gives us a really good two-way lineup. You saw what he can do at both ends.</p><p>“He’s a really good passer, excellent three-point shooter, but a really good overall defender as well. So Melt in the starting lineup is something we’ve talked about a lot in camp and here in the early going, and we really liked it. I think it makes a lot of sense for us.”</p><p>Green didn’t quite call for Melton to become a permanent starter on the postgame podium. When asked to assess what Melton brings to the table, though, his assessment essentially served as an endorsement of that prospect anyway.</p><p>“He gives us another ball-handler, obviously the spacing that he provides, and then defensively just taking on the challenge of guarding Shai, being the primary defender on Shai—that’s a tall task,” Green said of  De’Anthony Melton. “[Gilgeous-Alexander] is one of the better scorers in our league, and he held him to 24 points. Green’s knee injury in Golden State’s win over the Celtics could put them at a disadvantage in the frontcourt, while fans hope Podziemski is feeling better for Thursday’s matchup at Cleveland.</p><p>Draymond contributed nine points, six rebounds, and four assists in the Warriors’ latest win, while Melton and Podziemski were inactive. Still, the Warriors held the Celtics to 16 points in the second quarter. De’Anthony Melton will join Stephen Curry on the sidelines on Tuesday and Wednesday at Chase Center, out against the Pelicans due to <a href="https://ak-static.cms.nba.com/referee/injury/Injury-Report_2024-10-28_03PM.pdf" rel="noopener">right facet inflammation</a> in his back.</p><p>Andrew Wiggins is listed as questionable to play on Tuesday with a low back strain. Brandin Podziemski is the only other player on Golden State’s injury report, listed as available versus the Pelicans while still adjusting to wearing a protective mask for his broken nose.</p><p>Though Steve Kerr stressed on Monday that Golden State is being “careful” with Melton, another flare up of his longstanding back issues is concerning nonetheless. He missed the Dubs’ preseason tilt with the Los Angeles Lakers in Las Vegas due to mid-back tightness, and played just 38 games for the Philadelphia 76ers last season while managing a lumbar spine injury—the only reason a player of Melton’s (healthy) caliber was available in free agency for a one-year deal worth the mid-level exception.</p><h2><b>How will Steve Kerr manage Warriors’ rotation without Steph Curry, De’Anthony Melton?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Warriors-guard-DeAnthony-Melton-goes-after-a-loose-ball-in-preseason-action-vs.jpg"><figcaption>Cary Edmondson-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Curry’s absence is the headliner for Golden State, but don’t discount the impact of Melton’s. Both of them sitting out for the Pelicans’ stay in the Bay leaves Brandin Podziemski as Golden State’s lone guard equipped to handle floor-general duties. Draymond Green will certainly do even more ball-handling with Curry and Melton out, while Kyle Anderson—who quietly played just four first-half minutes in Sunday’s loss to the Los Angeles Clippers—is also likely to sop up additional playmaking opportunities.</p><p>Wiggins being ruled out against the Pelicans would be an especially damning development for the Dubs without Curry and Melton. He turned back the clock to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-andrew-wiggins-early-season-claim-second-scorer-behind-steph-curry">early-career alpha dog status</a> late against the Clippers, running high pick-and-roll and dribble hand-off actions to consistent success as Curry was in the locker room nursing his tender left ankle ankle. A heavier scoring burden would fall on Jonathan Kuminga if Wiggins proves unable to play, affording the third-year forward some much-needed additional reps as an on-ball creator while playing a majority of his minutes at small forward for the first time in his career.</p><p>What’s clear regardless of Wiggins’ status is that consecutive matchups with New Orleans down Curry and Melton stand to prove just how valuable Golden State’s one-through-12 depth really is. Much less certain is who would be best served starting on Tuesday and Wednesday now that Kerr’s roster of planned rotation players is filled with wings, forwards and bigs almost exclusively.</p><p>“I don’t know who I’m gonna start tomorrow,” he said on Monday, per Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area.</p><p>Buddy Hield is much closer to a wing than a point guard, and Gary Payton II is much closer to a big than a wing. But it’s not like deploying a 10-man rotation featuring nine non-guards will provide Golden State the size and athleticism you’d expect from most teams under similar injury-related duress. The Dubs, unfortunately, can’t count on winning the paint battle and owning the glass without Curry and Melton.</p><p>The good news is that it’s no given New Orleans will dominate the interior, either. Rookie Yves Missi is the Pelicans’ only center-sized big, and journeyman Daniel Theis has been starting in the middle for coach Willie Green with Trey Murphy III sidelined by injury. Coming into 2024-25 planning to fully embrace small-ball in the starting five, Trey Murphy III’s injury has forced New Orleans to deploy more traditional lineups. DeJounte Murray recently joining Murphy on the injured list leaves the Pelicans without what seemed like game-changing positional length before the season, too.</p><p>Keep a close eye on Kerr’s rotation and lineups on Tuesday and Wednesday. But the Dubs were missing two other key contributors in Sin City after Brandin Podziemski was diagnosed with a broken nose and De’Anthony Melton’s nagging back issues flared up once again.</p><p>Thankfully, both players were back on the floor Thursday in San Francisco, joining their teammates for what Steve Kerr called the “<a href="https://x.com/DaltonJ_Johnson/status/1847004874736890328" rel="noopener">best practice</a>” of the preseason, per Dalton Schultz of NBC Sports Bay Area.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-brandin-podziemski-suffers-broken-nose-regular-season-dawns">Podziemski broke his nose</a> during the third quarter of last Friday’s win over the Sacramento Kings while taking a hand-off from Trayce Jackson-Davis. He missed Tuesday’s game while waiting to be fitted for a protective mask, which he wore a day later at the Dubs’ fan-filled open practice at Chase Center.</p><p>Melton, meanwhile, was a late scratch in Las Vegas due to what Golden State termed “mid-back tightness.” Kerr stressed that the Warriors were simply exercising caution with the 26-year-old, whose stint with the Philadelphia 76ers last season was marred by a lumbar spine injury. Expect them to take similarly proactive measures to protect Melton’s back if he experiences discomfort again during the regular season.</p><h2>Who will start next to Stephen Curry in Warriors’ backcourt?</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Warriors-Brandin-Podziemski-questions-a-referee-during-a-preseason-game-against-the-Kings.-1.jpg"><figcaption>D. Ross Cameron-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Melton or Podziemski seemed like the only realistic candidates to start alongside Stephen Curry in the backcourt before Tuesday’s game. But then they were both inactive in Sin City as Wiggins played for the first time, prompting Kerr to open with a big, athletic, defensive-oriented lineup that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/why-steve-kerr-latest-starting-lineup-represents-warriors-peak-2024-25">represents Golden State’s highest ceiling</a>.</p><p>The Dubs certainly haven’t decided on starting Wiggins, Jonathan Kuminga and Trayce Jackson-Davis alongside Curry and Draymond Green. Kerr expressed optimism about that unit’s prospects after beating the Lakers, singling out the importance of Wiggins and Kuminga pushing pace in transition and playing downhill to combat its obvious spacing issues. Shouldering Green with such a heavy playmaking load without another natural ball-handler on the floor other than Curry is less than ideal, too.</p><p>But that balancing act of positives and negatives is unavoidable for Kerr and the coaching staff. They’re trying to settle on a starting lineup and come up with a workable rotation from a roster that goes legitimately 12-deep, but has obvious holes nonetheless.</p><p>Melton doesn’t have the positional size Wiggins does at shooting guard, making it more difficult for the Warriors to switch across four positions defensively. He’s not as threatening a multi-level scorer as Wiggins and only a slightly more reliable three-point shooter.</p><p>Podziemski, by contrast, provides real playmaking ingenuity next to Curry, the type of “connector” who always makes the game easier for his teammates in the open floor and halfcourt by cutting, screening and mapping the floor one step ahead of the action. The sophomore guard is no on-ball stopper despite his rugged commitment to defense, though, and doesn’t have the knockdown jumper off the catch, dribble or movement that would make long-range shooting his trump card.</p><p>The good news for Melton and Podziemski? Unlike Moses Moody, whose offseason improvement has been as glaring as anyone’s during exhibition play, they’re virtually guaranteed a spot in the nightly lineup. Kerr has made clear he wants a cemented starting five and prefers a set rotation, but the Warriors’ excess of quality depth may f<a href="https://x.com/BySamGordon/status/1847030037520044130">orce his hand into a different approach</a> this season.</p><p>“We have a lot of flexibility this year and that’s what I’m really excited about,” he said on Thursday, per Sam Gordon of the <i>San Francisco Chronicle</i>. “…Maybe it’s not the same 10 every night. After all, Curry was coming off a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/how-rare-was-stephen-currys-ankle-injury-recovery">plethora of ankle issues</a> that limited him to just 26 games played during the 2011-12 season. But the 2012-13 campaign proved to be Curry’s breakout, and this was when it became apparent that, sooner or later, he would lead the Warriors to greatness. Heck, even a 14-year-old De’Anthony Melton believed this to be the case.</p><p>With the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-deanthony-melton-replaces-klay-thompson-12-8-million-contract">Warriors signing Melton</a> to a one-year, $12.8 million contract, one of the 26-year-old’s old tweets have resurfaced. Back on May 7, 2013, Melton expressed his support of Curry and the Warriors during their second-round tussle against the San Antonio Spurs with a tweet that has <a href="https://www.si.com/nba/deanthony-melton-receipts-faith-warriors-steph-curry" rel="noopener">aged rather well</a>.</p><p>“I believe in curry right now,” Melton wrote.</p><p>De’Anthony Melton saw that his old tweet resurfaced and he re-echoed his sentiment, sharing an Instagram post made by the House of Highlights account to his own story, with the caption “😂😂😂 always believed”.</p><p>When Melton tweeted out his unwavering belief in Stephen Curry’s ability to lead the Warriors, the Dubs were coming off a heartbreaking two-point loss in Game 1 of their second-round matchup against the heavily favored Spurs. Curry was a monster during that 129-127 overtime loss, tallying 44 points on 18-35 shooting from the field, including a few clutch baskets, to almost lead the Dubs to an upset series-opening win.</p><p>Fast forward to 11 years later, and here is Curry, still playing at a high level for a Warriors team that’s looking to improve upon a 46-win season that wasn’t enough for them to make the playoffs. Now, Melton can do his part in helping the Dubs make the most out of the remaining high-caliber years of Curry’s career.</p><h2>De’Anthony Melton could be one of the most underrated pickups of the summer</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Philadelphia-76ers-guard-DeAnthony-Melton.jpg"></figure><p>De’Anthony Melton endured a rough, injury-riddled 2023-24 campaign with the Philadelphia 76ers. But when healthy, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/76ers-news-deanthony-melton-honest-stance-on-re-signing-with-philly-in-free-agency">Melton is a quality floor-spacer</a> who is not afraid to put up a fight on the defensive end of the court.</p><p>Melton gets his hands dirty, playing the passing lanes at an elite level while always being in the grill of opposing ballhandlers. He is averaging 1.4 steals for his career to this point even though he has come off the bench in 204 of his 350 career games, which is simply a testament to how solid his defensive instincts are.</p><p>The 26-year old guard can also get hot in a hurry from beyond the arc; in 23 of his 38 games last season, he made two or more triples. During the 2022-23 campaign, he made at least two shots from beyond the arc in 46 outings. He even has a game where he made eight triples. Melton might be streaky, but his three-and-D package makes him a solid two-way fit for the Warriors despite his 6’2 frame.</p><p>For the mid-level exception, the Warriors could not have gotten a much better player than De’Anthony Melton. He may not move the needle on his own, but for a team that has always prided itself on the defensive end of the court, he will be a useful connective piece who makes life easier for every one of his teammates.</p><h2>Warriors making moves</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Kyle-Anderson-dribbles-the-ball-during-Timberwolves-Jazz-game.jpg"></figure><p>The Warriors may not be too accommodating of their raucous fanbase’s demands, but they have made a few quality moves this offseason to bolster the roster in the aftermath of Klay Thompson and Chris Paul’s departures. Those departures have gotten the Warriors’ player payroll below the tax apron, which has then made it easier for them to spread the wealth more evenly down the roster.</p><p>The Dubs, in addition to bringing in De’Anthony Melton, also added Kyle Anderson in a sign-and-trade using the trade exception generated from the Thompson deal. Anderson was a huge part of the Minnesota Timberwolves team that made the Western Conference Finals, and he fits the Warriors’ DNA of hard-nosed defense, preternatural playmaking, and unbridled selfishness.</p><p>Anderson also gives the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-continue-roster-rebuild-timberwolves-sign-trade">Warriors some positional flexibility</a> and he approximates the impact Draymond Green has on the team. For a three-year, $27 million deal, it’s hard not to see the Anderson acquisition as anything other than a win.</p><p>And then there’s the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-warriors-serious-trade-talks-76ers-buddy-hield">Warriors’ pending acquisition</a> of historically great sharpshooter Buddy Hield in another sign-and-trade, this time with the 76ers. Hield is a three-point machine who will flourish in the Warriors’ system, and he is the rare player who is on par with the outside marksmanship of Klay Thompson.</p><p>Like De’Anthony Melton 11 years ago, it might be time for the Warriors fanbase to start believing again — especially if they <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-jonathan-kuminga-focused-trade-proposal-lands-jazz-star-lauri-markkanen">manage to acquire Lauri Markkanen</a> from the Utah Jazz.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

News of Melton joining the Warriors comes minutes after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-news-dallas-klay-thompson-contract-free-agency">Klay Thompson officially decided</a> to leave Golden State in order to join the defending Western Conference champion Dallas Mavericks.</p><p>As a result of Thompson’s departure, the Warriors are in uncharted territory as a franchise. Not only are the Warriors tasked with forming a new roster around Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, but the franchise is operating with financial flexibility for the first time in forever.</p><p>Melton, who is a valuable 3-and-D combo guard, now joins Curry in the backcourt after signing for what appears to be the full non-taxpayer mid-level exception, which will hard cap the Warriors at the $178.1 million first apron.</p><p>The 26-year-old guard joins the Warriors after previously spending the last two seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers. There, Melton averaged 10.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game over the last two years while shooting 37.9 percent from 3-point range.</p><p>His defensive versatility and shooting abilities are what make Melton a valuable addition for a Warriors organization scrambling to remain relevant in the Western Conference.</p><p>Unfortunately for Melton, he only played in 38 games this past year for the 76ers due to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/76ers-news-deanthony-melton-sounds-off-return-from-back-injury-win-vs-pistons" rel="noopener">ongoing back issues</a>.</p><p>Thompson’s departure appeared to be inevitable over the last few weeks leading up to free agency, but now everything is surreal for the Warriors.</p><p>This will mark the first time since the 2010-11 season that Klay will not be alongside Steph and Draymond in a Warriors jersey, effectively ending what was one of the most dominant dynasties the NBA had seen since Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in the 90s.</p><p>Just because Thompson is gone doesn’t mean the Warriors are going to rebuild. He exemplified their stated commitment to players who could provide consistent value on both ends of the floor, immediately becoming the sixth man and spot starter with his versatile blend of a 3-and-D skillset. But injuries to his back derailed his second season with the Sixers and calls into question his future with the team.</p><p>Melton missed almost the entirety of the second half of the 2023-24 season due to a nagging back issue. He saw just seven minutes of playoff action this season after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/76ers-news-deanthony-melton-targeting-comeback-for-game-3-vs-knicks">working through several flare-ups</a> that ended his returns to the court. In the 38 regular-season games he played, he averaged a career-best 11.1 points per game along with 3.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.6 steals.</p><p>“I got a better gauge on what I need to work on and understanding what I gotta do just to make it through a full season,” Melton said, adding that strengthening his glutes, hamstrings and core will help him take the stress off his back. Surgery was discussed, he said, but it’s not something he needs right now.</p><p>Melton, who said he only had “a short year” because of his injury problems, is hitting unrestricted free agency along with nine other 76ers teammates. His experience in Philly, he said, has felt like having four teams in that two-year window. It’s easy to see why for one of just five players who started 2022-23 and ended 2023-24 in Philly (along with Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Tobias Harris and Paul Reed).</p><p>Despite all the moving parts, Melton enjoyed the teammates he played alongside and has consistently voiced a belief that the team is one of the best in the NBA.</p><p>“I mean, for sure,” he said to the idea of re-signing with Philly. “I would love to. But, you know, it’s not up to me and I understand that. It is what it is and I understand that it’s a business.”</p><p>Melton has carved out a nice place with the 76ers, becoming close friends quickly with Maxey, earning the respect of teammates and coaches and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/76ers-news-daryl-morey-paul-reed-deanthony-melton-host-community-chess-competition">hosting an annual chess tournament</a> for local students. The 25-year-old said that he loves the city and the passionate fans. It’s for him simply getting back on the court and contributing. While he may not have been enough to flip the outcome of Philly’s loss to the New York Knicks in the first round of the playoffs, he missed out on the chance to play in the playoffs. He admitted that it hurt to have to watch from the sideline. Although he was active for the back half of the series, not being a consistent rotation player for months made it <a href="https://x.com/BySamDiGiovanni/status/1784675845082136887" rel="noopener">hard to turn back to him</a>.</p><p>The 76ers have a lot of cap space but also have to make some serious upgrades to their roster. They used a first-round pick to acquire Melton, adding to the motivation to keep him around for more than just two seasons (really one and a half because of his injuries). Melton’s lingering back injury has kept him sidelined for all but seven games over the last four months but he is now on track to be ready for the playoffs.</p><p>“Yesterday, I was able to get up and down, get some live action. So that was really good for me and my body,” Melton said. “Today, I went through practice, so I’m feeling good. I’m feeling good. He has been derailed twice in a return to play, missing the 76ers’ regular-season finale, play-in game and the first two games of the first-round series. Nurse <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/76ers-news-deanthony-melton-robert-covington-get-worrisome-injury-updates-ahead-of-nba-playoffs" rel="noopener">said Melton’s injury was “concerning”</a> and didn’t anticipate that he would be available for the play-in game, which the Sixers won against the Miami Heat.</p><p>In his most recent comeback, Melton <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/76ers-news-deanthony-melton-sounds-off-return-from-back-injury-win-vs-pistons">looked solid</a> after missing 21 straight games. The nature of his injury is unpredictable and fragile, making it tough for the 76ers to know if Melton will be available or when he’ll have to miss more time. He was a great complement to Tyrese Maxey, providing defense and shooting. Although Kyle Lowry is in the starting lineup as the other guard, Melton could still be a valuable contributor if his back allows him to be.</p><p>The 76ers need more production from their bench to keep pace with the Knicks, whose reserves have outscored Philly’s by <a href="https://www.nba.com/stats/teams/traditional?sort=PTS&amp;dir=-1&amp;SeasonType=Playoffs&amp;StarterBench=Bench&amp;PerMode=Totals" rel="noopener">a whopping 58-17 margin</a>. Those figures are on complete opposite ends of the leaderboard for this year’s playoffs so far. Having Melton back will give Philly a boost in bench production.</p><p>Although Melton’s not someone who is going to frequently create his own offense, he is a very solid spot-up shooter who can knock down looks from deep or put the ball on the deck to blow by closeouts. He’s also a versatile defender who can help make life harder for Jalen Brunson and keep up with New York on fast breaks.</p><p>Returning to play by jumping right into a playoff series is hard enough as it is. Throw in the problems Melton’s injury has given him and it makes it unclear how much he can provide for the 76ers. Even if he doesn’t end up playing, the fact that he’s simply approaching availability is a testament to his work ethic.</p><p>Maxey recognizes how hard Melton has worked to return, calling it a “journey” that his backcourt mate has not wavered in.</p><p>“There’s never been a moment that he’s been down. He’s worked every single day to try to come back. He hasn’t given up,” Maxey said. “And as a teammate, all you can do is appreciate something like that. And if he’s able to come back, I think he can change the series and it’d be great.”</p><p>Melton said that rehabbing is tough because of how “some days feel better than others and then you go two days when you’re real sore.” Just being away from the team was tough, even for someone who likes to be alone sometimes. The multiple returns and flare-ups have made this a particularly rocky injury trail. Hopefully for Melton, this last incident is the final uphill hike.</p><p>The 76ers need to do something to get back in this first-round series against the Knicks. However, De’Anthony Melton and Robert Covington are unlikely to be available.</p><p>After the 76ers <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/76ers-vs-nets-instant-breakdown-regular-season-finale">concluded their regular season</a> with a win over the Brooklyn Nets, Nick Nurse said that Embiid was held out as a precautionary measure and said he should be ready to go against Miami. He also provided the latest injury updates on Melton and Covington, who have respectively dealt with brutal back and knee injuries over the last several months.</p><p>Melton is now dealing with the second reaggravation of a back injury that has forced him to miss all but five games since the New Year. He made his second return earlier this week, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/76ers-news-deanthony-melton-sounds-off-return-from-back-injury-win-vs-pistons">playing 15 minutes and looking good</a>, but now could be sidelined again. Nurse said that he has “always had concern” with the problems Melton’s back has given him.</p><p>“It’s kind of the second time we’ve gone through holding him out, trying to treat him, getting him to a place where he thinks he can play, played a couple of games, then he went out again for a long stretch, we bring him back, he plays one game and he’s out again. We did get him on the court a couple of times last week and just hasn’t made enough progress to be able to move well enough without pain.”</p><p>The 76ers do have a good amount of depth on the wings with Nico Batum, Buddy Hield and Ricky Council IV coming off the bench. As the 76ers <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/76ers-vs-pistons-instant-breakdown-joel-embiid">took care of business</a> against the Pistons thanks to a monster Joel Embiid performance, Melton eased his way back into the game and contributed to the victory.</p><p>“I mean, throughout the whole process, it was a lot of ups and downs,” Melton said. “Some days, it was better than others. Definitely, there was a little doubt that crept into my mind. But I just tried to stay with it and every day, just take it moment by moment. And now we’re here.”</p><p>Melton said the pain felt like “a pinch in my back” and that he felt it throughout his everyday life. In just under 16 minutes, he recorded five points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals on 2-9 shooting. He said it felt “great” to get back out on the court with his teammates.</p><p>“It was great. As we’re getting healthy, just what he adds — shot-making ability, defense, a little bit of playmaking, another guard — I think he’s gonna help us a lot.”</p><h2><b>De’Anthony Melton returns from injury in 76ers’ win vs. Pistons</b></h2><p>76ers head coach Nick Nurse was pleased with what he saw from Melton in his return. “I think the main thing, I thought he looked very good movement-wise,” he said. “I think he was springy and quick and stuff like that.”</p><p>Nurse pointed to Melton’s poor shooting but acknowledged that after so much time off, it wasn’t too surprising. He was pleased with the “really good” shots he attempted, which included five catch-and-shoot three-point attempts, only one of which found the bottom of the net.</p><p>When he discussed his injury previously, Melton said that the rehab work focused on making sure the issue <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/76ers-news-deanthony-melton-provides-hopeful-update-recovery-from-back-injury">didn’t flare up again</a>, which he did by taking things slower and making some tweaks to his treatment plan. Staying home on road trips when the 76ers traveled afforded him the space to take his recovery at his own pace. But it did leave him missing his teammates a lot.</p><p>“Man, I was so bored,” he said, “but I got to play a lot of video games, which wasn’t that bad. When they came back, it was just a breath of fresh air, you know what I mean? It’s like after spring break, you get back to school and you see all your friends’ stuff, new fits, all that stuff. It just felt good to see their faces and joke with them and stuff like that.”</p><p>Melton’s role with the team going forward is uncertain. With Tyrese Maxey occupying one starting guard spot and Kyle Lowry looking really good in the other spot, a bench role seems to be the most likely one in the cards. Nurse said that Melton could return to the starting lineup “at some point” but added that, because starting “almost automatically” sets a player up to play a minute count somewhere in the high 20s or low 30s at least, Melton won’t be reinserted into that spot right away.</p><p>De’Anthony Melton making a return from such a stingy back injury is already a wonderful accomplishment. While he still has a lot to work on, the latest update from the Sixers’ 3-and-D guard is that his progress is trending upward.</p><p>As he looks to get back to the court for the 76ers, Melton hosted a community event at the team’s practice facility. Just trying to go day by day, see where it’s at. Every day could be different so just trying to keep going with it.”</p><p>Last week, the 76ers announced Melton had <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/76ers-news-deanthony-melton-robert-covington-get-critical-injury-timeline-updates" rel="noopener">started an “offloading period”</a> in his rehab and will be reevaluated after approximately two weeks. He continues to work his way back from a lengthy absence, as does Joel Embiid and Robert Covington.</p><p>At the start of 2024, Melton missed three games with lumbar spine soreness. He then played two games before being ruled out for 18 straight games due to a lumbar spine stress response. In his third game back from that return, a road matchup against the Boston Celtics, Melton experienced back spasms and was ruled out midgame. “Taking another hit, and I think it just finally gave out,” he said about the back issue that forced him back to the sideline. </p><p>Melton has now missed the 76ers’ last eight games and is slated to miss more. Fortunately, his approach should help him avoid reaggravating the issue. “What I’m doing now is gonna definitely help me with it not returning,” he said. “I think how I’m going about it and the time I’ve taken, I think I’ll be good.”</p><p>Melton said he didn’t have the words for how frustrating it has been to work through this back problem. The 76ers have dealt with other injuries in that time, such as Tyrese Maxey’s <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/76ers-news-tyrese-maxey-sounds-off-return-concussion-loss-knicks" rel="noopener">concussion</a> and Tobias Harris’ right ankle sprain that has him questionable to play in Philly’s next game. They’re trying to avoid the play-in tournament but seem bound for it at this point. While an update on him <a href="https://x.com/BySamDiGiovanni/status/1754883623440834809?s=20" rel="noopener">should be announced soon</a>, the team did provide updated timelines for Covington and Melton, who are respectively working back from a bone bruise in his left knee and lumbar spine bone stress.</p><p>The Sixers said in their announcement that Covington is “progressing in his rehabilitation program with the goal of beginning on-court activities over the next 7-10 days. He remains out and will be re-evaluated in approximately one week.”</p><p>Covington has been out for two full months with his knee issues, missing 29 consecutive games.
