After all, Curry was coming off a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/how-rare-was-stephen-currys-ankle-injury-recovery">plethora of ankle issues</a> that limited him to just 26 games played during the 2011-12 season. But the 2012-13 campaign proved to be Curry’s breakout, and this was when it became apparent that, sooner or later, he would lead the Warriors to greatness. Heck, even a 14-year-old De’Anthony Melton believed this to be the case.</p><p>With the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-deanthony-melton-replaces-klay-thompson-12-8-million-contract">Warriors signing Melton</a> to a one-year, $12.8 million contract, one of the 26-year-old’s old tweets have resurfaced. Back on May 7, 2013, Melton expressed his support of Curry and the Warriors during their second-round tussle against the San Antonio Spurs with a tweet that has <a href="https://www.si.com/nba/deanthony-melton-receipts-faith-warriors-steph-curry" rel="noopener">aged rather well</a>.</p><p>“I believe in curry right now,” Melton wrote.</p><p>De’Anthony Melton saw that his old tweet resurfaced and he re-echoed his sentiment, sharing an Instagram post made by the House of Highlights account to his own story, with the caption “😂😂😂 always believed”.</p><p>When Melton tweeted out his unwavering belief in Stephen Curry’s ability to lead the Warriors, the Dubs were coming off a heartbreaking two-point loss in Game 1 of their second-round matchup against the heavily favored Spurs. Curry was a monster during that 129-127 overtime loss, tallying 44 points on 18-35 shooting from the field, including a few clutch baskets, to almost lead the Dubs to an upset series-opening win.</p><p>Fast forward to 11 years later, and here is Curry, still playing at a high level for a Warriors team that’s looking to improve upon a 46-win season that wasn’t enough for them to make the playoffs. Now, Melton can do his part in helping the Dubs make the most out of the remaining high-caliber years of Curry’s career.</p><h2>De’Anthony Melton could be one of the most underrated pickups of the summer</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Philadelphia-76ers-guard-DeAnthony-Melton.jpg"></figure><p>De’Anthony Melton endured a rough, injury-riddled 2023-24 campaign with the Philadelphia 76ers. But when healthy, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/76ers-news-deanthony-melton-honest-stance-on-re-signing-with-philly-in-free-agency">Melton is a quality floor-spacer</a> who is not afraid to put up a fight on the defensive end of the court.</p><p>Melton gets his hands dirty, playing the passing lanes at an elite level while always being in the grill of opposing ballhandlers. He is averaging 1.4 steals for his career to this point even though he has come off the bench in 204 of his 350 career games, which is simply a testament to how solid his defensive instincts are.</p><p>The 26-year old guard can also get hot in a hurry from beyond the arc; in 23 of his 38 games last season, he made two or more triples. During the 2022-23 campaign, he made at least two shots from beyond the arc in 46 outings. He even has a game where he made eight triples. Melton might be streaky, but his three-and-D package makes him a solid two-way fit for the Warriors despite his 6’2 frame.</p><p>For the mid-level exception, the Warriors could not have gotten a much better player than De’Anthony Melton. He may not move the needle on his own, but for a team that has always prided itself on the defensive end of the court, he will be a useful connective piece who makes life easier for every one of his teammates.</p><h2>Warriors making moves</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Kyle-Anderson-dribbles-the-ball-during-Timberwolves-Jazz-game.jpg"></figure><p>The Warriors may not be too accommodating of their raucous fanbase’s demands, but they have made a few quality moves this offseason to bolster the roster in the aftermath of Klay Thompson and Chris Paul’s departures. Those departures have gotten the Warriors’ player payroll below the tax apron, which has then made it easier for them to spread the wealth more evenly down the roster.</p><p>The Dubs, in addition to bringing in De’Anthony Melton, also added Kyle Anderson in a sign-and-trade using the trade exception generated from the Thompson deal. Anderson was a huge part of the Minnesota Timberwolves team that made the Western Conference Finals, and he fits the Warriors’ DNA of hard-nosed defense, preternatural playmaking, and unbridled selfishness.</p><p>Anderson also gives the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-continue-roster-rebuild-timberwolves-sign-trade">Warriors some positional flexibility</a> and he approximates the impact Draymond Green has on the team. For a three-year, $27 million deal, it’s hard not to see the Anderson acquisition as anything other than a win.</p><p>And then there’s the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-warriors-serious-trade-talks-76ers-buddy-hield">Warriors’ pending acquisition</a> of historically great sharpshooter Buddy Hield in another sign-and-trade, this time with the 76ers. Hield is a three-point machine who will flourish in the Warriors’ system, and he is the rare player who is on par with the outside marksmanship of Klay Thompson.</p><p>Like De’Anthony Melton 11 years ago, it might be time for the Warriors fanbase to start believing again — especially if they <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-jonathan-kuminga-focused-trade-proposal-lands-jazz-star-lauri-markkanen">manage to acquire Lauri Markkanen</a> from the Utah Jazz.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

News of Melton joining the Warriors comes minutes after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-news-dallas-klay-thompson-contract-free-agency">Klay Thompson officially decided</a> to leave Golden State in order to join the defending Western Conference champion Dallas Mavericks.</p><p>As a result of Thompson’s departure, the Warriors are in uncharted territory as a franchise. Not only are the Warriors tasked with forming a new roster around Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, but the franchise is operating with financial flexibility for the first time in forever.</p><p>Melton, who is a valuable 3-and-D combo guard, now joins Curry in the backcourt after signing for what appears to be the full non-taxpayer mid-level exception, which will hard cap the Warriors at the $178.1 million first apron.</p><p>The 26-year-old guard joins the Warriors after previously spending the last two seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers. There, Melton averaged 10.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game over the last two years while shooting 37.9 percent from 3-point range.</p><p>His defensive versatility and shooting abilities are what make Melton a valuable addition for a Warriors organization scrambling to remain relevant in the Western Conference.</p><p>Unfortunately for Melton, he only played in 38 games this past year for the 76ers due to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/76ers-news-deanthony-melton-sounds-off-return-from-back-injury-win-vs-pistons" rel="noopener">ongoing back issues</a>.</p><p>Thompson’s departure appeared to be inevitable over the last few weeks leading up to free agency, but now everything is surreal for the Warriors.</p><p>This will mark the first time since the 2010-11 season that Klay will not be alongside Steph and Draymond in a Warriors jersey, effectively ending what was one of the most dominant dynasties the NBA had seen since Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in the 90s.</p><p>Just because Thompson is gone doesn’t mean the Warriors are going to rebuild. This was the role that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-klay-thompson-cites-manu-ginobili-as-inspiration-behind-bench-role-acceptance">Golden State wanted Thompson to take</a> for the 2024-25 season, resulting in the four-time champion looking elsewhere for starting opportunities.</p><p>Much like how the Warriors utilized Donte DiVincenzo a few seasons ago as a serviceable role player off the bench, Melton will fill a key scoring and defensive need in both the primary and secondary units.</p><p>Throughout his entire career, Melton has been a valuable secondary talent, as he has averaged 9.1 points and 3.7 rebounds per game while shooting 36.9 percent from 3-point range in six full NBA seasons.</p><p>Melton really burst onto the scene during the 2020-21 season when he played in 52 games for the Memphis Grizzlies, helping them knock off the Warriors in the Western Conference play-in tournament. He exemplified their stated commitment to players who could provide consistent value on both ends of the floor, immediately becoming the sixth man and spot starter with his versatile blend of a 3-and-D skillset. But injuries to his back derailed his second season with the Sixers and calls into question his future with the team.</p><p>Melton missed almost the entirety of the second half of the 2023-24 season due to a nagging back issue. His experience in Philly, he said, has felt like having four teams in that two-year window. It’s easy to see why for one of just five players who started 2022-23 and ended 2023-24 in Philly (along with Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Tobias Harris and Paul Reed).</p><p>Despite all the moving parts, Melton enjoyed the teammates he played alongside and has consistently voiced a belief that the team is one of the best in the NBA.</p><p>“I mean, for sure,” he said to the idea of re-signing with Philly. “I would love to. But, you know, it’s not up to me and I understand that. He was a great complement to Tyrese Maxey, providing defense and shooting. Although Kyle Lowry is in the starting lineup as the other guard, Melton could still be a valuable contributor if his back allows him to be.</p><p>The 76ers need more production from their bench to keep pace with the Knicks, whose reserves have outscored Philly’s by <a href="https://www.nba.com/stats/teams/traditional?sort=PTS&amp;dir=-1&amp;SeasonType=Playoffs&amp;StarterBench=Bench&amp;PerMode=Totals" rel="noopener">a whopping 58-17 margin</a>. Those figures are on complete opposite ends of the leaderboard for this year’s playoffs so far. Having Melton back will give Philly a boost in bench production.</p><p>Although Melton’s not someone who is going to frequently create his own offense, he is a very solid spot-up shooter who can knock down looks from deep or put the ball on the deck to blow by closeouts. He’s also a versatile defender who can help make life harder for Jalen Brunson and keep up with New York on fast breaks.</p><p>Returning to play by jumping right into a playoff series is hard enough as it is. Throw in the problems Melton’s injury has given him and it makes it unclear how much he can provide for the 76ers. Even if he doesn’t end up playing, the fact that he’s simply approaching availability is a testament to his work ethic.</p><p>Maxey recognizes how hard Melton has worked to return, calling it a “journey” that his backcourt mate has not wavered in.</p><p>“There’s never been a moment that he’s been down. He’s worked every single day to try to come back. He hasn’t given up,” Maxey said. “And as a teammate, all you can do is appreciate something like that. And if he’s able to come back, I think he can change the series and it’d be great.”</p><p>Melton said that rehabbing is tough because of how “some days feel better than others and then you go two days when you’re real sore.” Just being away from the team was tough, even for someone who likes to be alone sometimes. The multiple returns and flare-ups have made this a particularly rocky injury trail. Hopefully for Melton, this last incident is the final uphill hike.</p><p>The 76ers need to do something to get back in this first-round series against the Knicks. However, De’Anthony Melton and Robert Covington are unlikely to be available.</p><p>After the 76ers <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/76ers-vs-nets-instant-breakdown-regular-season-finale">concluded their regular season</a> with a win over the Brooklyn Nets, Nick Nurse said that Embiid was held out as a precautionary measure and said he should be ready to go against Miami. He also provided the latest injury updates on Melton and Covington, who have respectively dealt with brutal back and knee injuries over the last several months.</p><p>Melton is now dealing with the second reaggravation of a back injury that has forced him to miss all but five games since the New Year. He made his second return earlier this week, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/76ers-news-deanthony-melton-sounds-off-return-from-back-injury-win-vs-pistons">playing 15 minutes and looking good</a>, but now could be sidelined again. Nurse said that he has “always had concern” with the problems Melton’s back has given him.</p><p>“It’s kind of the second time we’ve gone through holding him out, trying to treat him, getting him to a place where he thinks he can play, played a couple of games, then he went out again for a long stretch, we bring him back, he plays one game and he’s out again. I just think it’s very difficult,” Nurse said. “I think we’re in the same situation; they’re gonna continue to treat him, try to get him better. We’re hoping for a long run here, so there’s still always time as this goes to get him back and have him be a factor in this thing. But it is concerning.”</p><p>Nurse didn’t definitively say either way whether Melton could play on Wednesday but said that it would take “probably a bit of a journey” for him to alleviate this new issue and be ready to play after playing just 21 total minutes of basketball over two games since the start of March.</p><p>Covington is almost certainly not going to be available for the playoffs. While he has been able to get some work in <a href="https://x.com/PompeyOnSixers/status/1769425352676331944" rel="noopener">on the court</a>, it’s not enough to be available for games.</p><p>“Nope, I don’t think so,” Nurse said when asked if it’s possible for Covington to return soon. “This hasn’t made enough progress. We did get him on the court a couple of times last week and just hasn’t made enough progress to be able to move well enough without pain.”</p><p>The 76ers do have a good amount of depth on the wings with Nico Batum, Buddy Hield and Ricky Council IV coming off the bench. As the 76ers <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/76ers-vs-pistons-instant-breakdown-joel-embiid">took care of business</a> against the Pistons thanks to a monster Joel Embiid performance, Melton eased his way back into the game and contributed to the victory.</p><p>“I mean, throughout the whole process, it was a lot of ups and downs,” Melton said. “Some days, it was better than others. Definitely, there was a little doubt that crept into my mind. But I just tried to stay with it and every day, just take it moment by moment. In just under 16 minutes, he recorded five points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals on 2-9 shooting. He said it felt “great” to get back out on the court with his teammates.</p><p>“It was great. I mean, he sucked today,” Embiid joked when asked about having Melton back, “but it was great to have him. He’s gonna be a big piece. As we’re getting healthy, just what he adds — shot-making ability, defense, a little bit of playmaking, another guard — I think he’s gonna help us a lot.”</p><h2><b>De’Anthony Melton returns from injury in 76ers’ win vs. Pistons</b></h2><p>76ers head coach Nick Nurse was pleased with what he saw from Melton in his return. “I think the main thing, I thought he looked very good movement-wise,” he said. “I think he was springy and quick and stuff like that.”</p><p>Nurse pointed to Melton’s poor shooting but acknowledged that after so much time off, it wasn’t too surprising. He was pleased with the “really good” shots he attempted, which included five catch-and-shoot three-point attempts, only one of which found the bottom of the net.</p><p>When he discussed his injury previously, Melton said that the rehab work focused on making sure the issue <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/76ers-news-deanthony-melton-provides-hopeful-update-recovery-from-back-injury">didn’t flare up again</a>, which he did by taking things slower and making some tweaks to his treatment plan. Staying home on road trips when the 76ers traveled afforded him the space to take his recovery at his own pace. But it did leave him missing his teammates a lot.</p><p>“Man, I was so bored,” he said, “but I got to play a lot of video games, which wasn’t that bad. When they came back, it was just a breath of fresh air, you know what I mean? It’s like after spring break, you get back to school and you see all your friends’ stuff, new fits, all that stuff. It just felt good to see their faces and joke with them and stuff like that.”</p><p>Melton’s role with the team going forward is uncertain. With Tyrese Maxey occupying one starting guard spot and Kyle Lowry looking really good in the other spot, a bench role seems to be the most likely one in the cards. Nurse said that Melton could return to the starting lineup “at some point” but added that, because starting “almost automatically” sets a player up to play a minute count somewhere in the high 20s or low 30s at least, Melton won’t be reinserted into that spot right away.</p><p>De’Anthony Melton making a return from such a stingy back injury is already a wonderful accomplishment. While he still has a lot to work on, the latest update from the Sixers’ 3-and-D guard is that his progress is trending upward.</p><p>As he looks to get back to the court for the 76ers, Melton hosted a community event at the team’s practice facility. Just trying to go day by day, see where it’s at. Every day could be different so just trying to keep going with it.”</p><p>Last week, the 76ers announced Melton had <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/76ers-news-deanthony-melton-robert-covington-get-critical-injury-timeline-updates" rel="noopener">started an “offloading period”</a> in his rehab and will be reevaluated after approximately two weeks. He continues to work his way back from a lengthy absence, as does Joel Embiid and Robert Covington.</p><p>At the start of 2024, Melton missed three games with lumbar spine soreness. He then played two games before being ruled out for 18 straight games due to a lumbar spine stress response. In his third game back from that return, a road matchup against the Boston Celtics, Melton experienced back spasms and was ruled out midgame. “Taking another hit, and I think it just finally gave out,” he said about the back issue that forced him back to the sideline. </p><p>Melton has now missed the 76ers’ last eight games and is slated to miss more. Fortunately, his approach should help him avoid reaggravating the issue. “What I’m doing now is gonna definitely help me with it not returning,” he said. “I think how I’m going about it and the time I’ve taken, I think I’ll be good.”</p><p>Melton said he didn’t have the words for how frustrating it has been to work through this back problem. The 76ers have dealt with other injuries in that time, such as Tyrese Maxey’s <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/76ers-news-tyrese-maxey-sounds-off-return-concussion-loss-knicks" rel="noopener">concussion</a> and Tobias Harris’ right ankle sprain that has him questionable to play in Philly’s next game. They’re trying to avoid the play-in tournament but seem bound for it at this point. While an update on him <a href="https://x.com/BySamDiGiovanni/status/1754883623440834809?s=20" rel="noopener">should be announced soon</a>, the team did provide updated timelines for Covington and Melton, who are respectively working back from a bone bruise in his left knee and lumbar spine bone stress.</p><p>The Sixers said in their announcement that Covington is “progressing in his rehabilitation program with the goal of beginning on-court activities over the next 7-10 days. He remains out and will be re-evaluated in approximately one week.”</p><p>Covington has been out for two full months with his knee issues, missing 29 consecutive games. The 33-year-old forward has yet to play a game in the calendar month of 2024.</p><p>Melton, the team’s announcement said, has “begun an offloading period and will be re-evaluated in approximately two weeks.“</p><p>After missing 18 straight games, Melton suffered back spasms <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/76ers-news-deanthony-melton-crushing-injury-update-after-returning-3-games" rel="noopener">just three games into his return</a>. He has appeared in each of the Sixers’ last three games but was scratched in the middle of the <a href="https://x.com/ginamizell/status/1762676648472682969?s=20" rel="noopener">most recent game</a> due to back spasms.</p><p>After the 76ers’ practice on Thursday, head coach Nick Nurse said that Melton will be out and that the team doesn’t know for how long. It’s a very unfortunate development for one of Philly’s key rotation players and an impending free agent.</p><p>In 36 games this season, Melton is averaging a career-best 11.5 points along with 3.8 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.6 steals while shooting 39.1 percent from the field and 36.2 percent from deep. His ability to hit spot-up threes and defend made him a useful player as a starter and bench player.</p><p>Nurse said that young forward KJ Martin, who missed the 76ers’ last two games due to a right ankle impingement, “went through about three-quarters of practice today. Still not quite clear to go all out. That could change at any time, though. Going against the Brooklyn Nets, the Sixers showed as clearly as possible how great defense fuels great offense.</p><p>De’Anthony Melton tallied four steals and a block and Kelly Oubre Jr. notched a pair of blocks and a pair of steals. The Nets committed 26 turnovers, feeding the Sixers a buffet of fast breaks that they used to build an insurmountable lead. Nick Nurse has preached the virtues of making defensive plays that lead to fast breaks.</p><p>“Nick definitely emphasized just, you know, causing disruption out there no matter what it is. Bodies on bodies,” Melton said.</p><p>The Sixers are ready to play defense differently under Nurse, even though it will take time and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-news-deanthony-melton-reveals-challenge-of-learning-major-changes-under-nick-nurse" rel="noopener">require constant learning</a> and re-learning to test out new tactics. Flying around the perimeter to cover up open spots and sinking in on drivers to force turnovers look like pillars of Nurse’s defense. For quick, long, athletic players, particularly on the wing, it’s a scheme that does wonders.</p><p>“That was everything,” Oubre said about forcing turnovers. “Defense leading to easy offense. And then, once the game kind of settled down, they kind of made some adjustments, but we stayed solid. That’s what we need to do. We need to be physical and go out there every night keeping the consistent energy.”</p><p>Oubre said that defense is “the bread and butter” of his game. Nurse complemented how Oubre got into the right places to make plays, which he believes is his next step to <a href="https://x.com/BySamDiGiovanni/status/1712517903528989108?s=20" rel="noopener">becoming an impactful defender</a>.</p><p>“He made plays and didn’t give up much, right? I think he’s made some progress on just being a little bit more solid [and] at the same time still making the plays,” Nurse said. “Which is, you know, it’s a trick, right? Like, a lot of people can gamble, gamble, gamble and make plays but then get beat, beat, beat, too, and give it all back. So, just trying to get him to stay aggressive but to be more solid — and he was tonight.”</p><p>Oubre credited Maxey and Melton for igniting the Sixers’ energy by “being in the passing lanes, pressuring the guards. A new season is always exciting to an NBA veteran but Melton is particularly eager to play under Nick Nurse, who enters his first season as the Sixers head coach with a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-news-players-express-excitment-for-mastermind-nick-nurse" rel="noopener">reputation of a schematic wizard</a>.</p><p>Melton will be available for the Sixers in their preseason home opener against the Boston Celtics after sitting out the first preseason contest while Joel Embiid, James Harden and Furkan Korkmaz <a href="https://x.com/BySamDiGiovanni/status/1712121749653881087?s=20" rel="noopener">continue to be out</a>. Even missing one game, Melton said, means he has to readjust to what Nurse is doing — which, to put it bluntly, is a lot.</p><p>“I mean, sitting out that first game, kind of put my head a little fuzzy because now I’m getting back to everything I was doing. But it’s fun,” Melton said after the Sixers’ morning shootaround. “It’s fun because he has a lot of things that he said, ‘We’re gonna try that you may not like but you may like but we’re going to try it and see.’ So, I’m excited to try new things on defense just to get my defensive capabilities.”</p><p>As evidenced in the Sixers’ preseason opener, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-5-things-we-learned-from-preseason-opener-vs-celtics" rel="noopener">which they lost</a> to the Celtics in Boston, Nurse has the Sixers defending more aggressively. They will be deploying more tactics as the season goes along as Nurse finds out what works for his team. A philosophy that was described by one of his former assistant coaches as <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-news-nick-nurses-former-g-legaue-colleagues-rave-coaching-approach" rel="noopener">“freedom within structures,”</a> Nurse has talked frequently about how Philly will be doing trial and error throughout the regular season.</p><p>On top of new schemes, Nurse is implementing a different language for how the Sixers communicate on the floor. A facet of the game that Philly coaches and players talked constantly about last season, it will be even more important this year.</p><p>“Instead of saying directional, we’re saying strong or weak and stuff like that,” Melton said. “So just saying all that. Communication skills for the rest of the team is important.”</p><p>While Nurse’s schemes will have the Sixers playing differently, the reality is that there would be a learning curve no matter who Doc Rivers’ successor was. Especially with a new coaching staff headlined by Bobby Jackson, Rico Hines, Bryan Gates and Coby Karl, there’s some meshing to be done.</p><p>“I feel like any scheme is different and sometimes it’s tough to pick up but it’s a new coach, new coaching staff so that type of stuff you got to implement, too,” Melton said. “It’s not rocket science and we just go out there and have fun and play hard.”</p><p>On the other side of the ball, Melton anticipates playing with pace and shooting a lot of threes, a focus that he is excited to play with alongside Tyrese Maxey. Nurse encourages aggression in attacking when on offense, something that should help uplift a Sixers offense that may not get Harden (or, at least, the most motivated version of him) this season and features spry athletes. Maxey and Melton would benefit from having guys like Kelly Oubre Jr. and Jaden Springer running in early offense with them.</p><p>Any difficulties in learning Nurse’s new schemes will have the potential reward of a team that is better suited for the playoffs. Melton, whose excitement in playing for Nurse was apparent the second he was asked about him at media day, is about to get his first reps under a coach he believes will do great things for the Sixers.</p><p>“Man, I feel amazing,” Melton said. “After watching last game and seeing everything the team implemented, I’m excited to get out there, have fun with my guys and be in front of this crowd, too.”</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He continued showing his two-way prowess as the Sixers <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-vs-raptors-instant-breakdown-joel-embiid-james-harden" rel="noopener">crossed the 50-win threshold</a> for the 2022-23 season.</p><p>Maxey’s 13 points and six assists on 5-8 shooting paired wonderfully with his defense against Fred VanVleet as he <a href="https://twitter.com/AUgetoffmygold/status/1641979046987722753?s=20" rel="noopener">closed out a fantastic March</a>. De’Anthony Melton, elevated to the starting lineup in Tobias Harris’ absence, has been known as the Sixers’ main two-way guard — and for good reason. But in his eyes, it’s time to recognize Maxey as such, too.</p><p>“He’s like a two-way player now, almost. Like, it’s crazy,” Melton said after the Sixers win. “He be picking up full, he be sliding, he be turning people. So, you know, it’s big for his growth. It’s something he may not want to do all the time, but he’s actually good at it based on his speed and stuff like that. I’m proud of him and it’s something he can do.”</p><p>Doc Rivers highlighted the defense that the Sixers got from Maxey and Melton against the Raptors, adding that Maxey’s defense has been huge in each of their last few games.</p><p>“I thought [in the] beginning of the game, Tyrese and Melt set the tone for us,” Rivers said. “They picked the ball up. Toronto was getting into their offensive with 14 and 13 on the clock. When you just have to play 13 seconds of defense, it makes you a really good defensive team.”</p><p>Tyrese Maxey’s skinny frame at 6-foot-2 gives off the appearance that he can be picked on defensively. While he does provide mismatch issues for the Sixers when he has to guard anyone bigger than him, he has the ability to slow down the offense at the top of the key before that can even happen. This aggressive tendency helps lead to turnovers, which allow him to use his speed to get out for easy buckets.</p><p>Developing into a solid defender has been an important area of growth for Maxey. He can light up the score sheet on any given day, but he has yet to develop a reputation as a well-rounded player. All season long, the Sixers have leaned on him to excel in as many areas as he can to help the team. In a change of pace, he tapped into one specific interest of his to support the local community: chess.</p><p>On an off-day in between Sixers home games, he hosted “Melton’s Make Your Move, ”a chess tournament for students in a collaborative effort with the After School Activities Partnership. Melton said that he started playing the game in high school, observing how others were playing in study hall. Once he got the movement of the pieces down pat, he started “adding my own spin onto it” and has played almost every day since then, including game days.</p><p>“Chess is something I play on a regular basis against my teammates, my friends, staff,” Melton said on Thursday afternoon at the Sixers’ training complex. “So, I really wanted to see what other kids play. I feel like this is something I do to help my mental health. Melton confidently claims that he’s the best chess player in the building and listed Morey, Paul Reed, strength and conditioning coaches Ben Kenyon and Stephen Brindle and team chefs Eli Collins and Julia Cushing as other members of the organization who play. It’s a brisk change of pace from his former team, the Memphis Grizzlies, as he said that he didn’t play with the team as much during his three years there.</p><p>Melton walked away with a 1-2 record on the day but, with a big grin, said that he’s not too sad because he knows he could have won the matches he lost. The kids were far from novices as 12 of them are scheduled to play in the U.S. Chess Federation’s national tournament that begins over the next few weekends (for different age groups). The four finalists from Melton’s 45-student tournament <a href="https://twitter.com/BySamDiGiovanni/status/1641525766323052551?s=20" rel="noopener">won an autograph</a> from the Sixers guard and will receive tickets to a future Sixers game.</p><p>The silent, subtle movements of chess pieces pale in comparison to the physical, fast-paced action on the basketball court, where Melton is one of the Sixers’ key players. But in the strategy and game on the checkered grid, he sees a lesson that he takes with him not just on the court but everywhere in his life. “I feel like the whole game of chess is like the game of life almost, Melton said. “Like, you can apply it to anything: how you gotta be patient, how you gotta think three moves ahead, four moves ahead. And then sometimes if you don’t, that stuff to hurt you. Like, you worry about other stuff, you get confused, then you can lose and somebody could backdoor you. So, I think it applies to everything.”</p><p>For NBA players like Melton, using a passion to give back to the community is the way to go. Earlier in the season, fashion and sneaker aficionado P.J. Tucker hosted a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-news-p-j-tucker-gets-real-on-how-intense-1-on-1s-matchup-vs-warriors-builds-phillys-identity" rel="noopener">$500-per-person shopping spree</a> at SNIPES group of students from a Philadelphia high school. Hosting a community event centered around chess comes as easily to Melton as hitting a spot-up triple or deflecting a pass from an opponent.</p><p>“It feels good because it doesn’t feel like a job or [like] you’re forced to do it,” Melton said. “It’s something I do, something I love to do so why not bring other people on board with it? I plan on wanting to do more tournaments, more openings and stuff like that — not even in Philly but just around the world because it’s something I love to do.
