He joined ClutchPoints in 2023.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-orleans-pelicans/pelicans-news-willie-green-offseason-zion-williamson-take-will-excite-fans">New Orleans Pelicans are about a month away</a> from a 2025-26 season that could be a make or break one as it pertains to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-orleans-pelicans/pelicans-news-willie-green-demands-zion-williamson-accountability">the Zion Williamson era.</a> Last year’s campaign was essentially lost due to injuries, and if things don’t turn around in 2025, the front office might have no choice but to pull the plug.</p><p>One beacon of hope for the Pelicans heading into this season is the fact that point guard Dejounte Murray is expected to return at some point during the year from the torn Achilles injury he suffered early on in 2024-25.</p><p>Recently, at Pelicans media day, Murray spoke on where he is in <a href="https://x.com/PelicansNBA/status/1970506014630858831" rel="noopener">his recovery process.</a></p><p>“I can run ten down and backs in probably 57 seconds,” said Murray, per the Pelicans on X, formerly Twitter. “It’s just from all the work. I think I could beat a lot of guys one on one right now if I’m just being honest with you. That’s just the confidence, the work I’ve been doing. Six days a week, twice a day. The beauty of it is there’s no rush… everybody’s on board. I’m just having fun.”</p><h2><b>A potentially big addition</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Pelicans-guard-Dejounte-Murray.jpg"><figcaption>Matthew Hinton-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Last season, the Pelicans watched Dyson Daniels, whom they gave up to the Atlanta Hawks to acquire Murray, blossom into the NBA’s Most Improved Player as Murray recovered from his injuries.</p><p>However, when healthy, Murray is still a very productive NBA guard, registering back to back 20-plus point per game seasons in Atlanta and also a capable playmaker for his teammates.</p><p>While he is not the defender that his former San Antonio Spurs reputation would suggest, Murray is a solid candidate to run a Pelicans offense that lacks a true point guard, even after their trade for Jordan Poole of the Washington Wizards this summer.</p><p>Overall, there might not be a team in the NBA with a bigger discrepancy between their potential floor and ceiling than the Pelicans, who have quite a bit of talent but also no reasonable way to have faith in staying healthy.</p><p>The Pelicans will kick off their season on October 22 against the Memphis Grizzlies.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Murray was originally acquired by the Pelicans in an offseason trade with the Atlanta Hawks prior to the start of the 2024-25 season.</p><p>Prior to Murray suffering the Achilles injury, he had missed 17 games due to a broken hand he sustained after the first game of the season. He made his return to the court on Nov. 27, only to suffer the Achilles injury on Jan. 31 after playing only eight minutes against the Boston Celtics.</p><p>Murray’s first season with the Pelicans was limited to only 31 games at a little over 32 minutes per game. He averaged 17.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 7.4 assists and 2.0 steals with splits of 39.3 percent shooting from the field, 29.9 percent shooting from the three-point line and 82.3 percent shooting from the free-throw line.</p><p>Now heading into his eight year in the NBA, Murray was originally selected by the San Antonio Spurs with the No. 29 overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft. He played five seasons for the Spurs before being traded to the Atlanta Hawks ahead of the 2022-23 season. He spent two seasons with the Hawks before they shipped him to the Pelicans. After a busy draft night, where <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-orleans-pelicans/pelicans-news-derik-queen-bold-claim-nba-draft">Dumars traded for Derik Queen at No. 13</a> with the Atlanta Hawks, New Orleans addressed its relationship with Murray following his recent remarks.</p><p>Dumars says <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFTl967wptg" rel="noopener">he reached out</a> to Murray personally.</p><p>“He and I had a really good conversation. We talked the next morning,” Dumars said. “I asked him, ‘Tell me what’s happening,’ and we had a good, long talk. It won’t be a problem this year.</p><p>“And sometimes, when things like that happen, it’s an opportunity — an opportunity to get better as an organization. I called in the medical staff and said, ‘Let’s talk about DeJounte’s interview. What part of this can we get better at?’</p><p>“I’ve been in the league long enough to know you don’t bury your head. You tackle it head on. I said, ‘Okay, DeJounte, talk to me— what’s happening?’ Then I turned to the medical staff: ‘Talk to me—what’s going on? Why is he saying this? What’s behind it?’ You deal with it directly. You don’t duck it. You don’t run from it,” Dumars concluded.</p><p>Murray had a difficult season and says the Pelicans didn’t help him get through the difficulties, including rehabilitation. He suffered a season-ending ruptured Achilles tendon injury.</p><h2><b>Dejounte Murray blasts Pelicans organization for 2024-25 campaign</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Pelicans-guard-Dejounte-Murray-1.jpg"><figcaption>Petre Thomas-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Pelicans guard Dejounte Murray dealt with a death and other health scares to some of his closest family members, including his mother, during the regular season. Murray says the Pelicans organization failed him throughout this time, especially when it came to utilizing some of the NBA’s basic resources, such as booking court time.</p><p>Murray called out the Pelicans <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyrl_4Q1tLA" rel="noopener">when he was a guest</a> on The Pivot podcast.</p><p>“It was a situation where, like, I got all these problems going on,” Murray said. “I broke my hand. I’m recovering. My mom had a stroke. One of my cousins got killed. Then my uncle overdosed… [During all this], I’m not getting what I need in the organization.</p><p>“It’s hard for me to get my training time; it’s hard for me to get lifts; it’s hard for me to get my own court time. There’s so many stories — if he were able to sit here and talk, he’d tell you: he’s never had a player come into his office and cry on his shoulder about how many murders he had to deal with back home in Seattle, how many funerals I had to pay for,” Murray said. “It was so crazy — a lot of my people don’t even know this. From family, friends, and the penitentiary… Pop didn’t want me to go to Seattle. When I first got drafted, I wouldn’t go to Seattle. And that was a man who cared about me. That was a man who wanted me to reach my full potential in life first — then as a basketball player.”</p><p>Murray,28, was selected 29th overall by the Spurs in the 2016 NBA Draft and played six seasons with the franchise. During his time in San Antonio, he earned an All-Star nod in 2022 and led the NBA in steals that season.
