At least, that is what the front office told fans with the acquisition of Dejounte Murray from the Atlanta Hawks.</p><p>Sure, the Point Zion Experiment was fine for stretches during the regular season, but the tactic hit a proverbial ceiling. EVP David Griffin and head coach Willie Green believe Murray will do more than just <a href="https://www.youtube.com/@NBAPelicans/videos" rel="noopener">raise the postseason floor</a> as the team’s new table setter.</p><p>It was tough for the front office to ignore how the Pelicans consistently failed to close out games last season. Murray is expected to be that steady hand for Green’s group.</p><p>“I think (Murray) can help a ton (in the last five minutes),” Green shared. “I think last season he hit three or four game-winners. When the ball is in his hands, he gets to his spot, raises up, and is confident knocking those shots down. We will rely on him but it is going to be a group effort moving the needle in that area.”</p><p>Green is not going to retain a tight grip on exacting play calls in clutch moments. Neither is he going to give up full control and leave Murray on the court to direct traffic alone. Williamson, Ingram, and Murray need the right platform to push the envelope. Providing it is Green’s job. Those All-Stars have to do the rest.</p><p>“It’s about creating an end-of-game environment where it might be one set but there are so many reads out of that one set,” explained Green. “Then it’s about exhausting those options in getting a play started at the right time. It’s knowing what shots we want to get and what we want to stay away from. We are constantly talking about those different concepts.”</p><h2>Pelicans balancing Dejounte Murray’s on-ball minutes</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Dejounte-Murray-and-CJ-McCollum-at-Media-Day.jpg"><figcaption>Mandatory Credit: Matthew Hinton-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Green and Murray know <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pelicans-news-new-orleans-shots-2024-25-season">Williamson and Ingram will command the ball</a> in most late-game situations. The Pelicans are hoping the new point guard defense does not let things get that far. When things are close, stay active and engaged to set a championship example. These are things New Orleans recognized from a Gregg Popovich protégé.</p><p>“Defensively, (Murray) has always been solid since he has come into the NBA,” said Green. “I think of his experience doing both (offensively), it will be more of a balance this season. He will have the ball but he knows that he has a ton of weapons around him. There are times Zion will have it, and times where B.I. will have it. We are going to need him to be a leader with the ball but also make plays when he is off the ball a bit.”</p><p>It’s a humbling change from the setup with the San Antonio Spurs.</p><p>“In San Antonio (Murray) was their clear-cut point guard, a leader. They played a lot through him.” Green replied. “He made that team go and (the Spurs) were successful because they trusted in him. He had free reign to kind of do what he needed to do for that team.”</p><p>Murray’s freedom is a bit more limited when working with other All-Stars, something he learned with the Hawks.</p><p>“I thought when he went to Atlanta it was a balance,” Green replied. “It was a balance of times where (Murray) could have the ball and determine what they do offensively. There were times he had to play off Trae Young and did really well doing that.”</p><p>Doing whatever a scrappy team needs is Murray’s specialty. Sometimes things do not work out, but so much is out of the player’s control in the NBA. With apologies to CJ McCollum, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pelicans-news-zion-williamson-difference-dejounte-murray-cj-mccollum">Pelicans know Murray’s approach is above reproach</a> and will make things easier for everyone else.</p><p>“It’s so true. It’s who he is. It’s who he has been since he has gotten here. He is making everybody’s job easier,” Green noted. “He is a really good communicator. He wants this. He wants our team to be better. We need more guys like Dejounte. Guys that just buy into what we are trying to do. We are all open and honest. He is holding himself, teammates, coaching staff, all of us accountable. Then Dejounte Murray moved into the offensive driver’s seat and the newest addition to the locker room wasted no time in showing off the new-look offense.</p><p>James Borrego and Green are getting more creative in New Orleans and the Pelicans are making some very noticeable changes with Murray as the starting point guard. Willie Green gave a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHIGxkDeYxI&amp;t=304s" rel="noopener">stamp of approval</a> after one game, a half really, of leading the offense.</p><p>“Love what I saw from Dejounte and his defense (with Herb Jones),” Green boasted, via the Pelicans’ YouTube channel. “I mean their ability to get steals and deflections ignite our transition opportunities. And then (Murray) can just settle the gym. He can run the pick-and-roll. He can get to his spots. You guys saw a couple of times jump up and shoot the ball. He’ll get more comfortable as we continue to progress.”</p><p>Williamson (19 minutes) and Murray (17 minutes) made the most of the midday 12:30 pm exhibition run. Still, Green had enough to elaborate on Murray navigating the pick and roll with Williamson and how it differs from last season.</p><p>“One of the things that we learned last season is when we would bring a lot of smalls and pick rolls with Zion and then they’re fives with track him. They’d meet (Williamson) at the rim,” explained Green. “So we’re trying to mix it up a little bit more (with Murray) this season and bring the fives to pick-and-rolls where (Williamson) can see him there in front of them and is not guys coming from the weak side trying to block his shots. We will continue to work on it, but we know watching film from last season. Liddell, and draft assets to acquire Murray. Williamson <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVzUGvnVXoY&amp;t=301s" rel="noopener">appreciates the team’s investment</a> in a proper point guard, even if it does come at CJ McCollum’s expense.</p><p>“With Dejounte, I was telling about making a joke with CJ like, ‘It’s the first time in a while I’ve played with a real point guard,'” Williamson laughed. “Nah, it’s all love though. It’s just there were times CJ would try to play point and it’s like I appreciate it but I need him to score. With Dejounte, I’m setting certain screens and have to roll faster. Before with (McCollum) and (Brandon Ingram) coming off the screen it’s different. Now you have a true PG who is looking to make the pass first.”</p><p>Williamson and Murray know that one-half of preseason basketball is not the sample size to bet the house on. The All-Star duo has 82 games to get ready for an NBA playoff run. So how does Williamson feel about things so far?</p><p>“It’s just a chemistry we will build as the season goes on,” Williamson replied.</p><p>Green sounded a bit more optimistic during the postgame press conference.</p><p>“I love the fact that all the concepts that we’ve been working on in training camp, you can see a lot of carry-over, and that’s refreshing, to know that these guys are taking that information and they’re applying it,” Green said. “That’s what preseason is for, to get your group together, get them on the floor, make sure that we’re fundamentally sound.”</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

One of those changes was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/grading-hawks-pelicans-dejounte-murray-trade">trading Dejounte Murray</a>, who was Trae Young’s backcourt starting mate for the past two seasons. At the end of the day, the pairing didn’t work out in the Hawks favor, and they moved on in an attempt to find someone that fits next to Young.</p><p>Coming into the season, there are several directions the team can go when trying to find out who will be the starter next to Young in the backcourt. Here are the top three options that make the most sense.</p><h2>Bogdan Bogdanovic has experience as Hawks’ starter</h2><p>Bogdan Bogdanovic has been a starter for the Hawks several times since he’s been with the team. Good things always happen when he and Trae Young are on the floor together, mostly because of their ability to shoot threes and their chemistry playing off of one another. In the past two years, Bogdanovic has come off the bench, and last season was probably one of his best, as he should’ve been in the running for Sixth Man of the Year.</p><p>The thing with starting Bogdanovic is that even though the offense will improve, he and Young are not known for their defense. He’s also better coming off the bench, and head coach Quin Snyder may want to continue to have a spark in the second unit. If he wanted to go with experience and more offense, Bogdanovic would definitely be the top option.</p><h2>Dyson Daniels can bring defense to the Hawks lineup</h2><p>One of the players acquired in the Dejounte Murray trade was Dyson Daniels, who for the past two years in New Orleans showed flashes of potential but didn’t have much of the opportunity to shine. Luckily for him, Daniels is the exact player that the Hawks are looking for, and mainly because of his defense. If you go to any of the advanced metrics when it comes to defense, Daniels may be atop several of those lists. Daniels presents problems for opposing teams with his point-of-attack defense, and his ability to get steals, and blocks, as a guard.</p><p>Putting a defensive guard next to Daniels would be the perfect pairing, but the offense may take a dip depending on who else is in the lineup. Daniels is only a 31% three-point shooter during his career, but with a player like Young, he’d be able to get him easy looks on the perimeter. Not only could Young help Daniels, but Daniels could be the defensive partner that Young needs next to him.</p><h2>Could Zaccharie Risacher make the starting lineup?</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Zaccharie-Risacher_0fc2f9.jpg"><figcaption>Dale Zanine-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>No. 1 draft picks typically start right away, but in Zaccharie Risacher’s situation, he’s coming to a team that has veteran options ahead of them, like Dyson Daniels and Bogdan Bogdanovic. One of the most prominent ones was shooting guard<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pelicans-news-dejounte-murray-breaks-silence-surprising-hawks-trade"> Dejounte Murray, who the Atlanta Hawks traded </a>to the New Orleans Pelicans.</p><p>There was <a href="http://imagn.com/setImages/579173/preview/23052335" rel="noopener">one major roadblock that prevented</a> the Lakers from landing the 27-year-old, via ESPN’s Brian Windhorst.</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>“The Hawks went down this road last year with the Lakers. There was a time where there was a lot of momentum, at least on the Lakers’ side, where they thought they had a great chance to get Dejounte Murray,” Windhorst said. “At the end of the day, D’Angelo Russell being in that deal, and I don’t know if it was they were going to have a third team or whatever, but the Hawks weren’t down with that.”</p><p>Atlanta thought Murray, who scored 22.5 points on 45.9% shooting with 5.3 boards and 6.4 assists per game last year, demanded a top-tier return in a trade. It ended up with Dyson Daniels, Cody Zeller, Larry Nance, E.J. Liddell, and two first-round picks from New Orleans. Daniels is a 21-year-old shooting guard out of Australia, and was drafted eighth overall by the Pelicans in 2022.</p><p>Russell, however, isn’t near Murray’s level, and Los Angeles didn’t have the same level of draft capital and depth pieces to offer as New Orleans did. “DLo” scored 18 points on 45.6% shooting with 3.1 rebounds and 6.3 rebounds per game last year.</p><p>While the trade was generally considered a fair one around the league, it received a couple votes as both the <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/insider/story/_/id/40669074/nba-offseason-survey-best-worst-most-shocking-moves" rel="noopener">worst and most surprising moves</a> of the offseason by a panel of 18 NBA coaches, scouts, and executives, via ESPN.</p><p>However, the Lakers and Hawks may still make a deal.</p><h2><b>The Lakers could be a destination for D’Andre Hunter</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Hawks-DeAndre-Hunter.jpg"><figcaption>© David Banks-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Los Angeles may be a good fit for Hunter, via ESPN’s Tim McMahon (same Hoops Collective podcast).</p><p>“The Hawks have been looking to unload De’Andre Hunter who is owed about 22 [million] this year, 23 [million] next year and 25 [million] the year after,” MacMahon said. “That’s not a great contract. Is it worth a team like the Lakers taking on that contract?”</p><p>Hunter, who averaged 15.6 points on 45.9% shooting with 3.9 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game last year, could provide the Lakers’ front-court with some extra punch. They made this move after winning the draft lottery and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/hawks-2024-nba-draft-grade-for-zaccharie-risacher">drafting Zaccharie Risacher first overall</a>. These moves have reset the franchise and show that they are looking to the future.</p><p>The Pelicans made this move to return to the playoffs for the second consecutive season. They have not advanced in the playoffs since 2018 and need to get a great performance out of Murray to break that streak. The Pelicans have an opportunity to do that because of their star-filled group of Murray, Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram, and CJ McCollum.</p><h2><b>Future of Hawks and Pelicans after Dejounte Murray trade</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Dejounte-Murra-with-Atlanta-Hawks.jpg"><figcaption>David Banks-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>The Hawks are set up to be one of the worst teams in the NBA this season. After getting rid of Murray, they are resting on Young and Risacher to win them any games. This matchup against the Pelicans will be one of the many where they are heavy underdogs. They should try and move Young for a haul of picks to kick off their rebuild.</p><p>Meanwhile, the Pelicans have set themselves up for a competitive window in the Western Conference. The only problem is that the West is incredibly deep. The Nuggets, Clippers, Lakers, Warriors, and defending Western Conference champion Mavericks will all command playoff spots.</p><p>These two teams are headed in different directions after the Dejounte Murray trade. That will be on display for the entire league to see when the Pelicans visit the Hawks on December 2.
