We talked the next morning,” Dumars said. “I asked him, ‘Tell me what’s happening,’ and we had a good, long talk. It won’t be a problem this year.</p><p>“And sometimes, when things like that happen, it’s an opportunity — an opportunity to get better as an organization. I called in the medical staff and said, ‘Let’s talk about DeJounte’s interview. What part of this can we get better at?’</p><p>“I’ve been in the league long enough to know you don’t bury your head. You tackle it head on. I said, ‘Okay, DeJounte, talk to me— what’s happening?’ Then I turned to the medical staff: ‘Talk to me—what’s going on? Why is he saying this? What’s behind it?’ You deal with it directly. You don’t duck it. You don’t run from it,” Dumars concluded.</p><p>Murray had a difficult season and says the Pelicans didn’t help him get through the difficulties, including rehabilitation. While opening up about his personal issues at home, the 28-year-old guard called out New Orleans for the dysfunction he witnessed during his first season with the organization.</p><p>“It was a situation where, like, I got all these problems going on… I broke my hand, I’m recovering. My mom had a stroke, one of my cousins got killed, then my uncle overdosed… [During all this] I’m not getting what I need in the organization. It’s hard for me to get my training time. It’s hard for me to get lifts. It’s hard for me to get my own court time. So, you can only imagine where my mental was at.”</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>Dejounte Murray was going through some serious personal woes throughout the 2024-25 campaign. After calling out the Pelicans during his time of need, there’s a chance he can turn things around as time goes on.</p><p>The Pelicans originally traded for Murray in July 2024. He finished his first season with the club, averaging 17.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 7.4 assists, and 2.0 steals per game. Dejounte Murray also owned a career low 39.3% field goal percentage while shooting 29.9% from beyond the 3-point line.</p><p>There’s plenty of time for Murray to turn things around in New Orleans, but it sounds like the franchise might have to step up to give him what he needs to succeed. The Pelicans quickly ruled him out for the game and Murray left the arena with a boot and crutches.</p><p>Shortly after the game finished up, Murray got the worst possible diagnosis. The Pelicans currently trail the Celtics 81-77 near the end of the third quarter in New Orleans. Alvarado started the second half in place of Murray.</p><p>During halftime, Murray left the arena on crutches and with a walking boot on his right foot, according to the Celtics’ local TV broadcast on NBC Sports Boston. The Pelicans quickly <a href="https://x.com/PelicansNBA/status/1885513595368173657" rel="noopener">ruled him out</a> for the rest of the game with a lower right leg injury.</p><p>Murray is far from the only star that has missed time for the Pelicans this season. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pelicans-zion-williamson-injury-advice-from-coach-k">Zion Williamson missed an extended stretch of time</a> with a hamstring injury and Brandon Ingram has been out for nearly two months with a sprained ankle. The two of them have combined to play in just 31 games this season.</p><p>Both of the Pelicans’ young, promising wings have also dealt with injuries this season. Trey Murphy III has appeared in just 32 games and Herb Jones has played in just 20 entering Friday, so Willie Green has been forced to shuffle his lineups around all season long. As a result, the Pelicans entered Friday night’s game at just 12-36 and in 14th place in the Western Conference. Williamson has scored more than 20 points in all but one game since he has returned and led the team in scoring with 29 points in their 137-136 loss against the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night.</p><p>Pelicans guard Dejounte Murray has enjoyed having the opportunity to play with Williamson and has been <a href="https://www.nba.com/pelicans/videos/dejounte-murray-guard-interview-new-orleans-pelicans-practice-1-30-2025" rel="noopener">particularly impressed with his performance</a> on the defensive end of the floor.</p><p>“Love it,” Murray said. “It comes down to the winning teams defend the basketball. After heading into January with a measly five wins to their name, the Pelicans have gone 7-4 throughout the month and have picked up four wins in a row. This surge has been helped along by Murray who has been a dependable scoring option for the team.</p><p>Murray has become a bright spot for the Pelicans in a season that has left a lot to be desired. He recently scored a season-high 30 points in a win over the Dallas Mavericks. Murray is averaging 17.2 points, 6.6 rebounds and 7.7 assists per game while shooting 38.4% from the field. He has had his share of time on the injury report this season.</p><p>Murray did play in both of the Pelicans’ previous matchups against the Grizzlies this season. He looks forward to continuing his reporting for ClutchPoints after entering the rumor foray over the last couple years.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Los Angeles Lakers</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Last season, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-lakers-failed-acquire-dejounte-murray-hawks-trade">Los Angeles Lakers and Atlanta Hawks got pretty close</a> to agreeing to a trade that would’ve sent Dejounte Murray to L.A. Now, a year and a trade later, Murray remains a solid fit for a Lakers team looking for athleticism, youth and defensive toughness on the perimeter. The question once again is: Will Rob Pelinka move the necessary draft capital with Austin Reaves still off the table?</p><p>In this latest entry into our <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-trade-target-will-rob-pelinka-pay-up-for-cam-johnson">Lakers Trade Targets</a> series, let’s take a look at a player Los Angeles definitely likes and would absolutely help both in terms of talent and fit, but whose availability on the trade market is incredibly difficult to figure out.</p><h2><b>The Pros</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Dejounte-Murray_5bd257.jpg"><figcaption>Stephen Lew-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Before the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-why-lakers-comfortable-pulling-trigger-dangelo-russell-trade-now">Lakers traded away D’Angelo Russell</a>, they had enough offensive firepower to stay with most teams, but struggled mightily to gets stops. Now, with Dorian Finney-Smith on the roster, they’ve been able to get those stops more frequently, but the offense (especially when either Reaves or LeBron James — let alone both — are off the court) has taken a few steps back.</p><p>Murray could start alongside Reaves as a two-headed perimeter approach with interior hubs like James and Anthony Davis in the starting group (rounded out by Finney-Smith in this case). Then, when Max Christie comes in as the first sub, Reaves could go to the bench to get ready to anchor units with fewer starters.</p><p>Murray is one of the few primary ball handlers strong enough on defense to also act as the primary point-of-attack defender, something the Lakers desperately lacked with Russell. At 6’5″ with a 6’10” wingspan, Murray could guard either point or shooting guards. Murray’s defense next to Reaves (who is fine as a secondary perimeter defender), plus Finney-Smith also on the perimeter, would alleviate the colossal effort asked of Davis night in, night out.</p><p>Then, in situations that call for more defense, the Lakers could even go to Murray, Christie, Jarred Vanderbilt, Finney-Smith and Davis. This just hasn’t been an option for a Lakers coach since Frank Vogel had the collection of demons that won the 2019–20 championship.</p><p>Murray is also young enough (28) to fit Davis’ timeline after James departs. Of the players out there even remotely available, Murray probably checks the most boxes based on what the Lakers need right now.</p><h2><b>The Cons</b></h2><p>In terms of basketball, there really aren’t many.</p><p>Murray’s three-point shooting has fallen significantly this season compared to last, but honestly, it’s basically impossible to hold anything against anyone playing for the New Orleans Pelicans this campaign. They’ve had so many injuries and so much turmoil that I truly don’t know how to analyze anyone. More on this in a bit.</p><p>If the shooting doesn’t improve, that would obviously be an issue, but I think he’s somewhere between the 30.2% he’s at this year and the 36% he shot last season. He’s a career 34% three-point shooter. He’ll be fine, even given the scars Lakers fans carry with shooters who forgot to shoot when they got to Los Angeles.</p><p>Murray’s defense has slipped a little over the last couple years, but again, a lot of that can be chalked up to situation. Having to play next to Trae Young defensively on the perimeter seems like a nightmare. And again, New Orleans is such a disaster this year that there’s no way to tell anything about anyone.</p><h2><b>The Cost</b></h2><p>Here’s where things get tricky. Even before getting to what the Lakers would have to send to the Pelicans of all teams remember, things weren’t exactly hunky dory between the two franchises during the infamous Davis negotiations. On top of that, league sources aren’t necessarily sure about the extent to which New Orleans is willing to tear down what was one of the more exciting rosters in the NBA because of a nightmare injury season.</p><p>Before the season, the Pelicans sent out Dyson Daniels, Larry Nance Jr. and two first-round picks (plus other contracts) for Murray. Cursed season aside, turning right around and trading him to the same Lakers organization that forcefully traded for your preview franchise player is a tough look.</p><p>It’s for these reasons Murray is going to cost both the first-rounders the Lakers can trade with very little (if any) protection, plus Rui Hachimura, Gabe Vincent and Dalton Knecht — whom sources say the Lakers still hold in extremely high regard despite his shooting woes the last couple months.</p><h2><b>The Likelihood</b></h2><p>Based on current intel, it’s pretty unlikely Rob Pelinka is going to use both the first-rounders at his disposal this season. Word to the effect has slowly made its way around the league after he didn’t attach a first-rounder to Russell’s expiring contract to land a higher impact player than Finney-Smith. It’s probably no coincidence, therefore, that we recently got our first report of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sources-lakers-stuck-waiting-for-jarred-vanderbilt-before-resuming-trade-search">concern from James and Davis.</a></p><p>Pelinka and the rest of the organization were thrilled when Knecht felt to them at 17 in last year’s draft. Current shooting slump aside, that was one of the few wins the front office has enjoyed in the last couple years. Putting Knecht at risk, as well as moving two first-rounders they’ve mostly kept out of trade conversations to this point, seems exceedingly unlikely.</p><p>But hey, if the Lakers remain in striking distance of homecourt for the first round all the way up to the deadline and Vanderbilt stays healthy long enough for them to be comfortable moving Hachimura, maybe they swing big in a couple weeks.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

That’s big for the Pelicans as Murphy has done it for them on both sides of the ball this season, and they’re going to need that while facing a loaded Celtics team.</p><p>The one question is if Dejounte Murray will be playing, as he’s listed on the injury report with right elbow tendonitis and a right shin contusion. Murray played in the last game for the Pelicans where they defeated the Philadelphia 76ers, and he finished with 17 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists. Murray will also be playing Sunday against the Celtics after being <a href="https://ak-static.cms.nba.com/referee/injury/Injury-Report_2025-01-12_04PM.pdf" rel="noopener">upgraded to available</a>.</p><p>The Pelicans have been trying to get into a groove this season after injuries have hurt them for most of the season. Murray does have two ailments listed on the injury report, but will probably try to go as the Pelicans are already down a guard with Murphy out.</p><p>This could be an opportunity for the Pelicans to pull off a road upset and gain some confidence in a season that has ultimately been a nightmare. The Pelicans are 7-31, they picked up two wins over the Washington Wizards last week and no longer have the worst record in the NBA as a result. The 76ers are 15-20, but have won two of their last three games and are one game out of a play-in spot currently.</p><p>Murray has been one of the Pelicans’ top contributors at guard in his age 28 season. He recently scored a season-high 29 points in the Pelicans 104-97 loss against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday night. Murray is averaging 16.3 points, 6.2 rebounds and 7.7 assists while shooting 38.7% from the field and 25.5% from 3-point range. </p><p>This is the first of two matchups between the Pelicans and 76ers this season. Fans can rest easy knowing Herb Jones, Yves Missi, and Trey Murphy III are seemingly safe. Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram, Dejounte Murray, and CJ McCollum could be on the move if the price is right. That exception is why Murray is the most unlikely to change addresses before the season ends.</p><p>Williamson and Ingram are former All-Stars with injury concerns and questionable contract statuses. Someone will still take a swing, especially small market teams unable to attract All-Star free agents. Soon-to-be <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pelicans-player-traded-veteran-nba-deadline">Pelicans’ sixth man CJ McCollum is a mid-tier addition</a> on a team-friendly deal but not a second option on any title contender. Still, each would command at least a prospect, some salary filler, and a first-round pick plus options in a negotiation. Well, that is what it cost to acquire Murray and the 28-year-old’s stock has dipped since joining the Pelicans.</p><p>Murray is averaging 16.6 points, 6.8 assists, 6.5 rebounds, and 2.7 steals/blocks over the first 10 games with New Orleans. The Pelicans knew there would be an adjustment period even without the rash of injuries. However, 4.2 turnovers every 33 minutes is a problem no team with postseason aspirations can overcome. Murray <a href="https://www.nba.com/stats/player/1627749" rel="noopener">posting career lows</a> in practically every major category, 28.1% from three-point range for example, is another knock.</p><p>Even fouls per game are at an all-time high (that’s a bad thing) for someone with Murray’s defensive reputation. It’s hard to see a return on the level of Dyson Daniels, Larry Nance Jr., and two first-round picks for Murray being recouped by the Pelicans. New Orleans would find few, if any, front offices with that package to offer and also a pressing need to bring Murray into the fold.</p><h2>Dejounte Murray’s market limits Pelicans options</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Dejounte-Murray-Pelicans-1.jpg"><figcaption>Trevor Ruszkowski-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Golden State Warriors are no longer shopping for a ballhandler after nabbing Dennis Schroder and a second-rounder for De’Anthony Melton and three second-round picks. Every other contender (Top 10 record) has their point guard of the future already in the starting lineup.</p><p>Selling low on Dejounte Murray before the NBA trade deadline would be a risky move for EVP David Griffin’s front office. Murray’s underwhelming performance so far is an outlier that most contenders could overlook, sure. None will be easily convinced to send back a prospect like Dyson Daniels, a veteran with Larry Nance Jr.’s leadership, or two first-round draft picks.</p><p>Would the Los Angeles Lakers still want to part ways with De’Angelo Russell and draft picks? Could the Orlando Magic call in need of reinforcements? Trying to drum up a bidding war beyond those two teams is hard to imagine.</p><p>Giving a disgruntled fanbase more ammo and driving away interest while the Smoothie King Center sits mostly empty is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pelicans-saints-news-fans-new-side-gayle-benson-amid-losing-seasons">something an assertive Pelicans ownership is going to notice</a>. The significant draft assets invested in acquiring Murray make it difficult to justify a rushed decision. Figuring out Murray’s turnover problems is a more pressing issue than seeking a trade that will likely not yield favorable returns.</p><p>At least it should be. It’s already hard to sell to seemingly give up on Dejounte Murray given what <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pelicans-news-dyson-daniels-nola-cursed-label">Dyson Daniels is doing for the Atlanta Hawks.</a> The Pelicans need to focus on integrating Murray into their system and maximizing his potential alongside other key players like Herb Jones, Yves Missi, and Trey Murphy III. A hasty trade could set back their progress and undermine the franchise’s long-term goals. it would also signal to the fans there is no conviction behind the vision that laid out in exit interviews last summer.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

This leaves the team with decisions to make regarding the players that stepped up in the absence of guards CJ McCollum and Dejounte Murray. And in the case of Elfrid Payton, the decision from the team on Tuesday was to waive the veteran guard, <a href="https://x.com/ShamsCharania/status/1864062914811801839" rel="noopener">per ESPN’s Shams Charania</a>.</p><p>“The New Orleans Pelicans are waiving guard Elfrid Payton, sources tell ESPN,” Charania wrote. “Payton averaged 6.7 points, 6.9 assists and 3.4 rebounds in seven games for the Pelicans — including a 14-point, 21-assist performance on Nov. 25.”</p><p>The seven games in New Orleans were Payton’s first at the NBA level since the 2021-22 season, when he averaged 11.0 minutes per game for the Suns. The statement performance Charania alluded to came in the team’s 114-110 loss to the Indiana Pacers on November 25. Payton had <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pelicans-news-elfrid-payton-internet-buzzing-posting-assist-total-pacers">fans of all NBA teams buzzing on social media</a> with his resurgence.</p><h2><b>Payton’s departure from Pelicans marks potential turning point</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Elfrid-Payton-New-Orleans-Pelicans.jpg"><figcaption>Stephen Lew-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Payton did everything the Pelicans asked of him when they <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pelicans-news-rewarded-elfrid-payton-years-long-resiliency-nba-return-john-ehret-university-louisiana">called him up from the G-League</a>. With several starting guards injured, he gave the team earnest veteran guard play. But with Murray and McCollum back from injuries, Payton’s role dwindled majorly. After playing only 17 minutes in the team’s 118-85 blowout loss to his former Knicks, the guard played just six minutes during Monday night’s 124-112 loss to the Atlanta Hawks.</p><p>It’s understandable for general manager David Griffin to waive Payton. It’s an acknowledgement that neither party is optimizing their time with the veteran sitting on the bench. But the team needs the move to mark an inflection point in its season.</p><p>The Pelicans are dead last in the Western Conference. They have lost nine straight games. As a result, they sit at 4-18 and have only won one game out of their last ten. The team is 1-11 on the road this season. The list goes on.</p><p>With Brandon Ingram <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-news-pelicans-brandon-ingram-intriguing-move-klutch-sports">apparently willing to jump ship in search of a new contract</a>, Griffin’s vision seems to have just been a mirage.
